ind Your Paradise

In the heart of a region that offers something for everyone, San Luis Obispo County is where your ideal day awaits. Hiking and biking, arts and culture, wine and fine dining, downtown shopping or a blissful day basking on the beach – all of these things and more are within your reach. Add a mild Mediterranean climate and a pleasant, small-town atmosphere, and you have the recipe for perfection.

Some of our signature attractions include: Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa In the heart of downtown SLO, find what many call the jewel of California’s missions. This still-active Catholic Church provides the backdrop for Mission Plaza, a community gathering spot and site of events and festivals year-round. missionsanluisobispo.org

Hearst Castle In San Simeon, 43 miles north of SLO along Highway 1 at the southern gateway to the rugged Big Sur coast, find the sprawling castle of publishing baron William Randolph Hearst. Now a state park and popular worldwide attraction, Hearst Castle is open daily for tours (except New Year’s, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day). Farmers’ Market Pick up your Hearst Castle tickets at Come to Higuera Street from 6 to 9 p.m. our Visitor Center at 895 Higuera Thursday nights for the second-largest Street in San Luis Obispo. Farmers’ Market in the West. This hearstcastle.org signature event features music, food, farm-fresh produce, flowers, homemade Bubblegum Alley creations and engaging entertainers. One of downtown San Luis Obispo’s downtownslo.com/farmers-market quirkiest features is Bubblegum Alley,

8

a 15-foot-high, 70-foot-long alleyway on Higuera Street covered in decades’ worth of chewed bubblegum left by passers-by. Bubblegum Alley has, over the years, attracted the attention of major news media, The Tonight Show, MTV and Ripley’s Believe It or Not, among others. Beaches They don’t call it the Central Coast for nothin’; from the craggy cliffs of Ragged Point south to the sandy Oceano Dunes, San Luis Obispo County’s got great beaches. Hit a bed and breakfast along Cambria’s Moonstone Beach, catch a wave in Morro Bay, walk the pier in Pismo Beach or Avila Beach, or comb the tidepools of Montaña de Oro in Los Osos. Wine Country SLO County is an oenophile’s delight. With thousands of acres of vineyards and more than 300 world-class wineries, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo and Edna Valley are the hidden gems of California’s flourishing wine industry. Take a tour and taste some of the dozens of varietals, or attend some of the region’s major events, including the Annual Wine Festival or Zinfandel

Weekend in Paso Robles, or Roll Out the Barrels or Harvest on the Coast in San Luis Obispo. pasowine.com · slowine.com Monarch Butterfly Grove November through February, Pismo Beach attracts a different kind of visitor when thousands of monarch butterflies gather in the Eucalyptus trees at Pismo State Beach. Elephant Seals The Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery, about seven miles north of San Simeon along Highway 1, is home to more than 15,000 elephant seals. Visitors come from around the world to view the marine mammals. Viewing platforms are open, free of charge, every day of the year, with peak numbers in late April, early May. elephantseal.org

armers’ Market

Cut out early, head to SLO and start your weekend with the second largest farmers’ market in the western United States. Every Thursday evening for the past 30 years, SLO has converted Higuera Street into its signature event. Six blocks of Higuera Street are closed to host this legendary street party featuring farm-fresh produce, flowers, down-home barbecues, handmade creations and engaging entertainers. Like clockwork, merchants and vendors roll out their tables, booths and oversized barbecue pits on wheels, prepare their produce, pulled pork and tri-tip sandwiches, and wait for the whistle signaling the start of the fair.

The market is a great place to grab dinner – just plan on bringing cash and dining street-side.

From 6 to 9 p.m., you’ll find locals and visitors getting their week’s worth of produce, eating a meal that was flame-kissed just moments earlier and enjoying some family-friendly entertainment all in one spot. Most downtown merchants join in the festivities by extending their hours for evening visitors. Continued on next page >>

Farmers’ Market Continued from precious page

SLO County, with our robust agricultural and cattle ranching heritage, is renowned for locally grown sustenance, and we back that up with seven days of farmers’ markets. So if you miss Thursday night’s activities, don’t fret, there’s another tomorrow. In SLO alone there are three throughout the week, not counting the Thursday night granddaddy of them all. Each of the markets in the county is unique in its own right. Avila Beach and Morro Bay offer seafood in abundance. Whether you’re looking for it fresh off the boat or hot off the grill, it’s available on the waterfront. Templeton is known as the chef’s market, where locals sneak a peek at what their favorite chefs are picking up and get a preview of the menu for the week ahead. The SLO weekend markets are a great place to chat up the farmers and learn from the growers themselves what the best cooking tips are for the seasonal produce. So no matter what day you arrive, you are guaranteed to find the freshest foods at one of our many markets and restaurants.

F rom Past to Present

Part of experiencing San Luis Obispo’s charm is understanding how the city came to be the gem of the Central Coast. SLO embraces and proudly displays its past, and it’s easy for visitors to take it all in with a simple walking tour of the downtown area. With the map on page 19, you can experience San Luis Obispo through the last nearly two and a half centuries. In 1772, Father Junipero Serra established the fifth of his California missions in San Luis Obispo, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, which remains a working parish church, in the heart of downtown. San Luis Creek, the original water source for Find out more by the mission and later the city, winds downloading the History through Mission Plaza, which Center’s free podcast walking remains a central meeting place and tours at historycenterslo.org. host of festivals, fairs, and other celebrations throughout the year. The mission is the root of San Luis Obispo’s history and an ideal spot to begin your tour of historic SLO.

1. Mission Plaza, 1968 – A gathering spot for the community, as well as many events and festivals year-round. Through a nearby footbridge, the plaza adjoins to the creekwalk and provides access to shops on Higuera Street. 2. Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, 1772 –

Considered by many to be the most beautiful in the mission series, this was the fifth of the 21 California missions built. The mission is still an active Catholic church.

3. San Luis Creek – The mission’s earliest source of water, San Luis Creek, can be found in many spots throughout town including at Mission Plaza and along the creekwalk downtown. 4. Judge Walter Murray Adobe, 1849 –

At one end of Mission Plaza you will find the adobe home of Walter Murray, an Englishman who came to California with Stevenson’s Regiment of New York Volunteers in 1846. Murray printed the first editions of San Luis Obispo’s local newspaper, The Tribune, in this building.

5. History Center of SLO County, 1905 –

One of the roughly 3,000 public libraries built worldwide by steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie, this building became the County Historical Museum in 1956. 6. The Creamery, 1906 – SLO County once was home to the largest dairy industry in the United States. This full-service creamery closed in 1974 and now houses art galleries, shops and restaurants. 7. Jack House, 1875 – Pioneering rancher and banker Robert Edgar Jack built this home, which has been preserved as a museum of Victorian life circa 1880.

8. St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1867 –

One of the first Episcopal churches in California, St. Stephen’s houses a pipe organ donated by Phoebe Apperson Hearst. 9. Myron Angel Home, 1883 – This red Victorian was the home of Myron Angel, one of the driving forces behind the establishment of Cal Poly. A publisher of The Tribune in the 1880s, Angel wrote History of San Luis Obispo County, California that was published in1883.

10. Historic Railroad District, 1894 –

The Southern Pacific Railroad route connected Los Angeles to San Francisco and brought the city into the industrial age. The district is now a busy neighborhood, which includes the train station and railroad museum, as well as many restaurants and businesses. 11. Dallidet Adobe, 1853 – Pierre Hyppolite Dallidet, who established the first commercial vineyard on the Central Coast, built this home. The adobe contains many original furnishings and is surrounded by gardens. 12. Ramona Depot, 1889 – The Southern Pacific Railroad Company built the depot to serve the luxurious Ramona Hotel. The elegant Victorian burned to the ground in 1905, leaving only the depot, which now shelters the horse-drawn carriage that carried passengers between the hotel and the train station.

13. Kundert Medical Building, 1956 –

Designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, this building is a popular stop on many architectural tours of SLO.

14. Fremont Theatre, 1940 – SLO’s Art Deco movie palace is fully restored, with all of its original features. Its ceiling is painted with sea nymphs on horseback and its marquee is a neon showpiece at night. 15. Andrews Bank Building, 1893 – The bank was built by J.P. Andrews. Andrews donated the land across the street to the county for the site of its courthouse. 16. Fremont Marker, 1846 – A granite column on the corner of Osos and Mill streets marks a spot where the great western explorer John C. Fremont camped overnight. 17. Site of Casa Grande, 1851 – Built by Captain William Dana, this adobe was used as a hotel, saloon, store and courthouse. When the county failed to pay its rent on the courthouse, a lengthy lawsuit ensued; Dana was the county treasurer and so paid himself the amount due.

18. Sinsheimer Bros. Store, 1874 –

This building’s one-of-a-kind cast-iron façade was cast in San Francisco and transported down the coast by ship. 19. Sauer Adobes, 1860 – The pair of adobes across Chorro Street from the mission includes the two-story Monterey-style Sauer-Adams adobe. It was originally a one-story structure similar to its smaller companion. 20. Ah Louis Store, 1884 – Chinese immigrant merchant Ah Louis built this structure of bricks that he made himself. The store, which anchored SLO’s Chinatown, served as a bank, post office and general merchandise store for the more than 2,000 Chinese laborers who came to San Luis Obispo to build the railroad. 21. Garden Street Inn, 1887 – The Italianate Queen Anne home built by German immigrants Morris and Helena Goldtree changed hands twice before being configured into eight apartments in 1923. In 1990 it opened as a bed-and-breakfast inn. 22. Presbyterian Church, 1905 – This church is built entirely of gray granite quarried from Bishop Peak, the second in the range of volcanic peaks that lead from San Luis Obispo to the Pacific Ocean.

E

xcellence in Education

DID YOU KNOW?

For more than a century, San Luis Obispo has been home to some of the nation’s brightest minds. Each fall a new group of freshman and transfer students join those lucky enough to call themselves Cal Poly and Cuesta College students. For 22 consecutive years, U.S. News and World Report has named California Polytechnic State University the best public-masters university in the West. And Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo County’s public community college, has promoted lifelong education and offered associate degree and certificate programs to the community for more than five decades. Students at both institutions find themselves surrounded by coastal peaks, sun-drenched beaches and a small, hometown feel that all help create a quintessential California college experience. Cal Poly One of the 23 California State University campuses, Cal Poly is highly selective and renowned for its distinctive Learn by Doing education and comprehensive, polytechnic curriculum. More than 20,000 students study in 64 undergraduate and 32 graduate degree programs in six colleges (Architecture & Environmental Design; Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences; Engineering; Liberal Arts; Science & Mathematics; and the Orfalea College of Business). The Performing Arts Center on campus hosts theatrical and musical productions by local, regional and touring performers. Guided walking campus tours are available, and suggestions for self-guided tours are online; call 756-5734 for information. Enter the Cal Poly campus via Grand Avenue, north of downtown. 756-1111; calpoly.edu.

Cuesta transfers more students to Cal Poly SLO! In Fall 2014, 26% of transfers to Cal Poly came from Cuesta – more than twice as many as any other community college. Cuesta offers 69 degree programs and 58 certificate programs.

Cuesta College Cuesta College focuses on providing accessible, high-quality education to the community. Cuesta’s main campus is located on scenic Highway 1, about five miles north of San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly. Cuesta operates a satellite North County Campus in Paso Robles and offers courses at Arroyo Grande High School and Nipomo High School in southern SLO County. The college also offers an online distance education program to extend its services throughout the region. Cuesta offers 69 associate degree programs and 58 certificate programs to nearly 9,600 students. Cuesta is also home to the Cultural and Performing Arts Center, a 450-seat theater. Campus tours are available. 546-3100; cuesta.edu.

Cuesta now offers 22 transfer degrees to the CSUs! The second most out of all other 112 California community colleges.

T

he Enchanted Hill

Starting in San Francisco, expanding to New York City and building a publishing empire that would span the globe, William Randolph Hearst decided to build his dream home in San Luis Obispo County. Makes perfect sense to any local. Whether he was jet-setting (OK, prop-plane-setting) around the world, building newspapers in the heyday of print or enjoying a horseback ride There are several tours which highlight specific parts near San Simeon, the man’s only of the castle and gardens. boundaries were set by his checkbook, Tour One is recommended which also knew no bounds. There is for first-time visitors. a reason it’s not called Hearst Cottage. Hearst’s “simple summer home” comes fully loaded with golden swimming pools, guest houses and massive gardens overlooking expansive ranchlands and a rugged coastline. Where else can you get photo-bombed by a resident zebra?

For publishing baron William Randolph Hearst, happiness was a sprawling castle atop a hill overlooking extensive ranchlands and the rugged coast north of San Luis Obispo. Hearst Castle was a place “where Hollywood stars and the San Francisco elite were brought together by perhaps the only man colossal enough to stand astride both worlds,” according to Sunset magazine. It was designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan, built over 28 years and filled with Hearst’s prodigious collection of art and antiques from around the world. At once elegant and outlandish, the 250,000-acre estate consists of four homes, 165 rooms, 127 acres of gardens, 41 fireplaces, two pools and even a private zoo. At La Encantada (the Enchanted Hill), as he called it, Hearst entertained the celebrities of his era. Politicians, journalists, movie stars and European royalty frolicked in the pools, dined in the tapestry-laden dining room, enjoyed lavish costume parties and watched films in the Castle’s private theater. Today, Hearst Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in California. Hearst San Simeon State

Historical Monument includes a large visitor center with an exhibit about the Hearsts, a National Geographic movie theater with a five-story screen, a gift shop and food service. You can choose from six guided tours of the castle, two of which are wheelchair accessible and provide assistance for the visual and hearing impaired. All tours are rated by the number of stairs included. Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument is 43 miles north of San Luis Obispo via Highway 1. Open daily except New Year’s, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Tours leave at regular intervals from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Spring and fall also feature an evening tour that allows guests to experience the castle as one of Hearst’s guests would have. During the winter holidays, the castle and its docents are decked out for the season.

Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made at the Visitor Center at 895 Monterey Street in San Luis Obispo, or online at hearstcastle.org

With mild year-round weather, fewer crowds, and affordable prices (at least compared to L.A. and San Francisco), this central-coast town embodies California mellow…

S hangri-La, with Delights for All Rugged and rustic, urbane and elegant — San Luis Obispo County is a diverse and multifaceted community with charms for all tastes. When you arrive, you’ll find more than enough to occupy your time. You may need to stay awhile to soak it all in. Whether you’re here for a whirlwind night or a weeklong tour, SLO County has the accommodations to suit. Delight in the hospitality of a B&B, a fancy getaway, a country ranch, or a budget-friendly inn.

San Luis Obispo At the heart of the county is San Luis Obispo. Grab a bite or pick up a keepsake in the celebrated downtown. Or hit the greenbelt surrounding the city for some hiking or biking. SLO is the hub of the county, home to a regional airport, the county government, Cal Poly and the main Cuesta College campus. And the area’s beaches and vineyards are all just a hop, skip and a jump away. A few miles southeast along Highway 227, you’ll find the heart of SLO’s wine

38

region in Edna Valley, amid coastal hills and acres of vineyards. And southwest off Highway 101, there’s the tucked-away town of Avila Beach. With several beaches to choose from as well as boutique shopping, gourmet restaurants and a beautifully restored lighthouse, the only thing Avila lacks is the crowd.

North County Rolling golden hills dotted with oak trees greet you along Highway 101 north of SLO. First, there’s Santa Margarita, tucked in just north of the Cuesta Grade, offering beer- and

wine-tasting, ziplining and an eponymous lake just down the road.

To the north is Atascadero, boasting a budding shopping core and expanding menu of dining options , a state-of-theart multiscreen cinema, Atascadero Lake and its surrounding park. Templeton features one of the county’s largest farmers markets, a rustic downtown and agricultural land loaded with grain, almond, cherry and apple farms and some of the North County’s signature vineyards and wineries. Then there’s Paso Robles, home to a robust wine region, a thriving downtown and the California Mid-State Fair, a yearly summer extravaganza that celebrates the county’s ranching history and winemaking present while drawing a diverse slate of A-list music acts and entertainers. And for a day on the water, don’t miss nearby Nacimiento Lake. Continued ON NEXT page >>

Shangri-La continued from previous page

And don’t forget San Miguel, at the county’s northern edge, anchored by the late 1700s Mission San Miguel and featuring many cattle ranches and numerous wineries.

North Coast Take Highway 1 north out of San Luis Obispo, and you’ll find a scenic route leading to some of the county’s most well-known beach communities, Hearst Castle and the southern gateway of the famous Big Sur coastline. First comes Morro Bay, featuring a fisherman’s wharf and an amazing fresh fish market. Visit the Embarcadero for dining, antiques and gift shops, kayak rentals and deep-sea fishing tours. And don’t forget to get a look at the towering Morro Rock. Nearby, Los Osos offers the Elfin Forest, a 90-acre natural area for hiking, and Montaña de Oro State Park, with camping, hiking, mountain biking, surfing, beaches, tidepools, beautiful vistas and equestrian trails. Keep heading north for a vintage 1950s-era surf town and pier in Cayucos, and Harmony, a tiny settlement boasting a pottery shop,

40

glassworks studio and winery – and a population of just 18. The village of Cambria is bursting with artist studios, antiques, crafts and winery tasting rooms. Round that off with a house made completely of rubbish, and Moonstone Beach, and you have a dynamite day trip. Finally, you’ll find San Simeon, with Hearst Castle, elephant seals, ragged ocean cliffs and, a little further north, the Piedras Blancas Light Station and Ragged Point at the gateway to Big Sur.

South County To the south along Highway 101, San Luis Obispo County offers worldfamous coastal towns, quaint village shopping and one of only a handful of beaches in the country allowing off-highway vehicle traffic. First up are Pismo Beach and Shell Beach, offering the quintessential California beach town experience, including shops and eateries, a popular pier and surf spots, a can’t-miss summer car show and one huge Fourth of July party.

Cut west onto Highway 1 South, and you’ll find Grover Beach and Oceano. The Oceano Dunes offers the finest and most extensive coastal sand dunes in California and an impressive playground for off-highway enthusiasts,

as well as surfers, surf anglers and campers. Oceano is also home to one of the most entertaining old-school melodramas in California. Finally, along Highway 101 at the southernmost edge of San Luis Obispo

County is Nipomo, with horseback riding through beautiful eucalyptus groves, hiking through peaceful dunes, one of the most popular barbeque joints in the area, and some lush world-class golf courses.

News you want. Information you need. In Print. Online. Mobile.

Further south, Arroyo Grande gives you a charming downtown village filled with boutique shops, local restaurants and parks. And don’t forget about nearby Lopez Lake. visitslo.com

San Luis Obispo County’s wine regions produce award-winning vintages that are world renowned for their quality, craftsmanship and distinctiveness. Oenophiles recognize this area as ideal for producing superior Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and other Rhône varietals. Named Wine Enthusiasts 2013 Wine region of the year, the Paso Robles wine region boasts more than 200 wineries and tasting rooms, while about 30 are located near SLO. Some varietals demand the cooler air of the San Luis Obispo region, while others need the warmer daytime temperatures of Paso Robles. While you’re visiting, take some time to tour one or both wine regions to taste the distinction, and then bring a bottle (or more) home as the perfect souvenir. slowine.com | pasowine.com
