Bernie Taupin was born at the historic Flatters Farmhouse in 1950, and entered into the unambiguous world of postwar England – a time when society was begging for change, and rock and roll culture was a welcomed answer. Bernie credits his mother and paternal grandfather for instilling in him an appreciation for literature, nature, history, music, and poetry. At a young age, he demonstrated an exceptional flair for writing, and was fascinated by the history and romance of the American West, a boyhood enthusiasm that is still present in his life today. In 1967, Bernie began working with Elton John, but it wasn’t until 1970 that “Your Song” was created, and brought with it the lifetime success that the two greats have experienced. At this point, Elton and Bernie were at the top of their games in the music industry. Bernie quietly continued to write and formed alliances with other artists at this time, which became a pattern throughout his career. Aside from his Elton John collaborations, Bernie has co-written with rockers like Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper and country singers John Anderson and Willie Nelson. His musical endeavors have gained him a prestigious Golden Globe, and earned him numerous coveted positions at the top of international music charts. Ever the Renaissance man, Bernie Taupin continues to delight and surprise even those who think they know him best. In addition to lyricist, musician, producer, author, and award winner, Bernie Taupin is also a serious visual artist. He describes this creative avenue as, “Simply the visual extension of what I have spent my life creating through words.” He first began frequenting art galleries and museums in the 1970’s and found unexpected crossovers between his own songwriting and the Modernist art of Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still. Bernie Taupin’s paintings often hover gracefully around the canons of both the Abstract Expressionist and Pop Art movements. His stunning canvases are composed of abstract shapes of tantalizing color and cryptic social commentary, captured in multimedia form. A man of limitless creativity, Bernie Taupin explores the visceral relationships between color and texture through his wide array of media; he often uses acrylic and oil paint, wood stains, spray paint, wax, glass, metal, and paper. Bernie Taupin’s artwork has been exhibited nationally, from New York to Los Angeles. His artwork can also be found in numerous significant private collections throughout the United States. Bernie invites audiences to choose an imaginative outlet of his – music or art – and immerse themselves in his passion for creativity, history, and opinion.
