grafikmagazin

Grafikmagazin is a print magazine for everyone passionate about design. Published every second months, Grafikmagazin reports on graphic design, illustration, typography, corporate design, production techniques, editorial design, and information graphics. As a special interest magazine, it addresses professionals working in cre ative industries and, every issue is packed with inspiring projects as well as lots of useful information. What can designers do to shape a better future for all of us? Sus tainable print production, what does it look like? How can we create truly inclusive designs? What is the value of design?

Grafikmagazin covers a multitude of design topics, but most importantly, the magazine is a design object in itself. Each issue is printed on four different papers and every cover presents another highlight: colored edges, hot foil stamping, dripon varnish, or holographic effects. Located in the beautiful historical Ruffinihaus in the center of Munich, the makers of Grafikmagazin love to combine craft, quality, and their passion for design.

Christian Meier, Tobias Holzmann, Christine Moosmann, and Sonja Pham are the former graphics and editorial team of novum magazine. When the publication was discontinued after 96 years, they decided to found their own magazine. Starting a print magazine during a pandemic sounded like a risky idea, but by now, Grafikmagazin is an integral part of the Germanspeaking design community.

Melville Brand Design in Munich is a branding agency run by Florian Brugger, Lars Harmsen, Johannes König, and Michael Schmidt. For Melville, branding consists of two main factors: The appearance of the brand and its story-telling—both are man ifested on all relevant platforms—visual and editorial, print and digital, experimental and virtual.

Melville’s clients range from global players like Adidas, Marc O’Polo, or Canon— long-term relationships resulting in pinpointed and exciting campaigns as well as reliable branding and communication work. The agency also works for mid-sized manufacturers and local small businesses. To Melville, those resonate on the same scale as the big players. Indeed Melville’s work is based on sound strategies without making a big fuss.

The collective of ten team members also runs two brands: the experimental art book series 100for10 which consists of more than 100 international artists’ mono graphs and is still growing. Melville’s other brand: Makers Bible—A manifesto for quality, passion, and craftsmanship—publishes books and online stories on crafts manship and “handmade quality” that offer its readership alternatives for less but better consumption.

Creating eyewear fashion is true art. Starting with a design that fits perfectly and creating the raw material from vintage acetate over hand-laminated acetate to recycled acetate. Creativity and sustainability are immensely important, and eyewear frames are produced in more than 170 steps.

For people who do not want to wear glasses as a medical necessity but as an expression of their personality and individual style, FUNKeyewear is the place to go. Dieter Funk and his wife Sashee Schuster are passionate eyewear creators. They run one of the last few frame-making workshops in Germany where their spectacle frames are made by hand from scratch. FUNK’s clear mission is to preserve the tradition of hand-crafting eyewear, to do so in a sustainable and fair manner by also supporting independent opticians, and to provide people with fashionable acces sories to express themselves and show as much of their souls in their individual style as they please.

Since 1985 in the studio of Berthold Hoffmann, individualistic objects of the cook ing and table culture have been developed and manufactured in small-scale serial production. Mastering artisanal techniques of metal processing has enabled Mr. Hoffmann to apply his design ideas directly to sculptural objects of everyday life.

Pans, pots, and roasters are developed in his studio and made according to his casting models in cooperation with regional iron foundries. The reworking or final finishing of castings in his workshop marks the individual character of each item. The surfaces of his iron pieces are burnt black with linseed oil. As a result, you obtain a unique product that will last a lifetime.

The silverware is manufactured by Mr. Hoffmann after working an idea out in sketches, paper models, and then working samples in base metals. From idea to finished object, a variety of craft techniques are used. Just some of these are: forg ing, annealing, brazing, grinding, and polishing. These heirloom products are made of solid sterling silver. The material thickness of the semi-finished utensil or tool is usually between 1–1.2 mm, giving you a high-quality object for everyday use.

Nymphenburg is the last manufactory of its kind where everything is made entire ly by hand. The fine art of porcelain production has been cultivated in the artisan workshops of the Bavarian royal family since it was founded in 1747. Here, to this day, “Manu Factum” still means entirely made by hand using techniques passed on and preserved from generation to generation. The Bavarian Alps are a beautiful backdrop to the RACING ATELIER studio, as well as Leander’s home. Interlacing work and home life reflects Leander’s ideals of product design. In the workshop or out in the field, the atelier creates and shares experiences and expertise that produce excellence.

Rucksack#1 exemplifies the studio’s take on development, design, and manufacturing. The project started as a personal quest for a bag that could be called an earnest companion for life.

All products and projects are developed in close contact with the client and then made in the racing atelier’s workshop. With over 120,000 items in its collection, Die Neue Sammlung is one of the largest major international museums for 20th and 21st-century design and applied art.

Die Neue Sammlung is also one of the oldest design museums in the world. Born out of the visionary spirit of the Deutscher Werkbund, it was officially founded in 1925, with the aim of discovering, collecting, and preserving “the new” of the very highest quality. To this day this commitment continues to inform the program of Die Neue Sammlung.

The international collection focuses on a period from 1900 to the immediate present. The museum is home to a wide range of items, spread across over 20 col lection fields. In addition to prime examples of industrial design, product design, or mobility design, they include important fields such as ceramics, metal, or glass as well as furniture, textiles, or studio jewelry. The Graphic Design section covers a broad spectrum, from posters and packaging design to book design.

Die Neue Sammlung addresses important and current topics while also acting as a venue for solo shows. Contemporary designers are also invited to develop site-specific projects.

Nadine Vicentini— Managing Director of bayern design

The Bavarian design landscape is vivid, top-caliber, and fascinating—a true creative hub with diverse design talents and myriad prestigious design agencies, from under cover offices to global agency networks. Bavaria is where innovative minds and young talents meet traditional craftsmanship, enriching one another. At 13.3 %, the design sec tor is the second-largest sub-market of Bavaria’s cultural and creative sector in terms of the size of its workforce. Adding the advertising and architectural sub-markets that mainly focus on design, the percentage increases to an overwhelming 33. This makes Bavaria one of the most important sites in Germany for creative design-related ser vices. At the same time, design is a key competence for addressing the major challenges of our time, including climate change, depletion of resources, and inclusion. Designers’ expertise reaches deep into other commercial sectors. Against this background, we were proud to be approached by the editorial team at Slanted Publishers with the idea of a special edition dedicated to Bavaria. Our heartfelt thanks to the team for the excep tional cooperation and to our sponsor, the Bavarian Ministry of Economy, for turning the idea into reality.

Designed in Bavaria

Bavaria stands out as a design site because of its wide-ranging design landscape. Product, industrial, fashion, jewelry, communication, and digital designers, as well as those involved in branding and photography, benefit from the many companies and rich craft and cultural heritage that make up Bavaria’s economic prowess. Most notably, Bavaria provides a home to global players, including Nio, an electric car manufacturer based in China. Nio’s vehicles are designed in Munich, and to this end, the company has set up a global design center in a prime location—electromobility designed in Bavaria! Communication designers from Bavaria are thriving particularly well in the field of corporate design (CD): Ten of the 20 most successful agencies in Germany have a regis tered office in Munich (Page CD / CI Ranking 2021). In addition, not all Bavarian cham pions are listed in this ranking! Of course, all of them work for customers throughout Germany and abroad.

For example, the Inter Milano football club commissioned a new logo and CD from Mirko Borsche and his Munich-based agency. In an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung, on May 14th, 2021, Borsche explained the main changes: “We eliminated the FC and reduced the letters in the logo to I and M so it would sound like I am—I am Milano. When spoken, it automatically comes across as a clear and positive commitment to the team.” BMW, Deutsche Post AG, Lufthansa, and other companies based in Germany also rely on the expertise rely on the expertise of agencies from Bavaria. “To Convert a Place Into a State of Mind”  — Gordon Matta-Clark Karsten Schmitz— Stiftung Federkiel

The aim of the Federkiel Foundation is to create spaces for architecture, design, and art and to stimulate encounters within them. Like a common thread, open communi cation is an important aspect to build bridges between these areas and to promote the active co-creation of innovative artistic processes in the networks. Artists are the most important partners in this process.

The curatorial approach of the Stiftung Federkiel (Federkiel Foundation) lies in inviting artists to interpret and actively shape spaces.

Based on long grown art friendships, fruitful processes develop with architects, designers, and artists. From the diverse experiences that have arisen in the network during the development of the Baumwollspinnerei, Leipzig into a creative quarter, the foundation today pursues a special aesthetic concept: a fine, quite strict formal lan guage; with partly Japanese echoes.

This concept becomes visible in the following space-related works:

the end of the world

This installation, inspired by traditional tea rooms, was jointly developed by the design ers Sami Ayadi and Jan Heinzelmann (OHA—Office Heinzelmann Ayadi) in consulta tion with the artist Peter Granser.

Since last fall, the Stiftung Federkiel, in cooperation with artist and tea enthusiast Peter Granser, has been showing this special, sensual room installation. A combina tion of contemporary art with a tea ceremony conducted by the artist himself by appointment. Inspired by his travels to Japan and Taiwan, Peter Granser deals with unusual exhibition formats on essential themes such as time, emptiness, nature, and consciousness. The experience of art is combined with the enjoyment of Japanese or Taiwanese tea.

Slender iron bars, light gauze, and reduced furniture create an overall image that invites the visitor to a guided tea ceremony. As a visually and haptically strong archi tecture by OHA, the pavilion combines with the displayed art and the tea ceremony to form a unity. While the classic tea house is entered via a garden path, where one moves around the actual space, guided in interstices, mentally and physically, away from everyday life, into another world.

The simple seating furniture inside the cube, as well as the traditional utensils for preparing tea, were specially made. For example, the well-known Austrian ceramics artist Matthias Kaiser made special bowls and vessels by hand. Japanese metal artisan

Yumi Nakamura designed the ritual copperware. The interior walls in the cube display large format photographs taken by Peter Granser in Hokkaido in the area that, in the language of the indigenous Ainu, denotes “the end of the world.” Above the ominously rising steam at the foot of the volcano, the visitor is embedded beyond the tea experi ence into an environment that oscillates between an aesthetic natural spectacle and the unbridled elemental force of nature.

Their recipe for success: They combine strong aesthetics with technical know-how.

Simply produced furniture, you say? Not interesting. Moormann is searching for furniture creations based on a special idea. Some times absurd, sometimes brilliant, sometimes a detail, sometimes a revolution. Typically a minimalist formal language with a high level of expediency—but always with a subtle twinkle in the eye.

Since 2013, MUCBOOK has been the first blogger magazine in Germany to combine print, design, and text. The result is a mix of refreshing new narrative forms from the blogosphere and high-quality journalistic research. MUCBOOK wants to improve the city, bring people together, move them forward, and network them.

Nolan Paparelli is a Swiss graphic and type designer. He graduated with a BA in Graphic Design at ECAL in 2015 and runs his own independent practice since 2017. While developing his personal work, he collaborated with the likes of Swiss Typefaces, Herburg Weiland, and Think Work Observe to name a few. In 2021, his typefaces Everett and Everett Mono have been published by TYPE. WELTKERN®.

Nymphenburg is the last manufactory where every thing is made entirely by hand. In the manufactory of the Bavarian royal family the fine art of porcelain making has been cultivated since 1747. “Manu Factum” still means entirely made by hand using techniques that are passed on and preserved from generation to generation. The master workshops in Munich produce style-defining services, artifacts, and be spoke interior solutions that are ahead of their time.

He studied Graphic Design at Kassel University from 1990 to 1992 and Visual Communication plus painting at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design from 1992 to 1997. Since 1997, he runs his own design office in Munich. After guest teaching in Austria and Iceland he is teaching as a professor for Com munication Design at ABK Stuttgart since 2003. This 3rd generation, familyrun shop of metal workers started bending steel back in the 1970s and still is based in Oberasbach near Nuremberg, Germany, today. Spitzbart Treppen and Heavy Metal Interior are the two labels of the stair way manufacturer. “Honest and untreated” surfaces, preferably made of heavy steel that are raw, rusty, and featuring a patina, have become their trademark.

OK … Bavaria stands for: Men in Lederhosen and women in Dirndls (traditional dresses), beer, pork Schweinshaxen (knuckles), Knödel (dumplings), Brezeln and Weißwürste, Oktoberfest, FC Bayern Munich, BMW (75.000 employees), Audi, Allianz, Adidas, Siemens, Alps, Allgäu, Munich, Nuremberg, Augsburg, Dachau, Altötting, Chiemsee, Starnberger See, and all the other lakes, Neuschwanstein Castle (logo template Disney), Kraus-Maffei Wegmann, Airbus and MTU (most German arms exports come from Bavaria), Deutsches Museum, Pinakotheken, Neue Sammlung, Münchner Kammerspiele, Bayrische Oper, Wagner-Festspiele, Karl Valentin, Gerhard Polt, Lothar Matthäus (“I hope we have a little bit lucky”) … Stop. In the case of Bavaria, the list of clichés can be extended indefinitely.

Until the 1950s, many still considered Bavaria to be an agricultural state—an image that even then stood for only one side of the Free State. In 1972, the Olympic Games in Munich presented the world with a civilian Federal Republic that had shed the dull gray of the post-war years and was openly looking to the future. The Weltstadt mit Herz (World City with Heart) was proclaimed. Though “The games must go on.”—Avery Brundage, then president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), declared at the funeral service for the eleven members of the Israeli team killed the day before …

With the help of bayern design, we tracked down designers, artists, photographers, illustrators, and crafters—all people who love their region (almost a third of the Bavarian population prefers to spend their vacations in their own state) and are passionate about what they do. Clearly, Bavaria is rich. Rich in creativity, diversity, and intelligence. Our research uncovered so many findings that this issue could easily have been many times more extensive. It’s a typically Bavarian dilemma we have to face: Immer etwas zu viel des Guten! (There’s always more good stuff than you can enjoy). And we think that’s really good! Because life is really good here. Servus!
