THE COLLINI-CENTER COMPLEX IS NEAR THE MVV AND THE NBN. THERE ARE NUMEROUS ROUGH SPOTS AROUND THE TALL STRUCTURE, IN KEEPING WITH BRUTALIST ARCHITECTURE. Favorite trick: Ollie over the Rail (Gap/Rail)

LANZKAPELLE

p. 86–95

Lanzkapelle August Ludwig, 1907–1911 Spots: Curbs, Gap, Manuals Following the death of the industrialist Heinrich Lanz in 1905, his widow Julia Lanz founded the Heinrich Lanz Hospital. The sandstone building was erected in the style of historicism but was severely damaged during the World War II. The subsequent reconstruction ensured hospital operation until 2007. However, after a three-year vacancy, the entire complex was demolished. Only the chapel at the corner of the Lanzpark still bears witness to the original design. Contrary to its initial religious function, the Lanzkapelle was converted into an event venue.

SCHLOSS

p. 96–107

Schloss / Universität Louis Remy de la Fosse, 1720–1760 Spots: Banks, Curbs, Manuals, Rails Located northwest of the Rhine river, the baroque palace of Mannheim is situated at the end of the so-called Kurpfalz axis. Construction of the palace complex was begun in 1720 by Elector Karl Philipp. The three-wing complex with its commemorative courtyard was completed after only six years. Further construction phases included the palace church and the opera house. More than 40 years later, the Mannheim Palace was completed as one of the largest baroque palaces in Europe stretching across 440 meters. After being severely destroyed during World War II, reconstruction began in 1947. Today, the castle houses the University of Mannheim. PARKHAUS N2

p. 108–119

Parkhausanlage N2 Emil und Peter Serini, 1964–1967 Spots: Curbs, Slappys, Wallrides With its inclined parking levels and one-way system, the N1 townhouse parking structure falls into the category of ramped parking garages. The wall elements made of exposed concrete are arranged in a zigzag to each other and constitute the facade, supporting easy parking and also protecting the neighboring houses from the headlights of entering cars. The structure’s natural ventilation is realized by means of concrete lamellas, which are arranged on opposite facade elements. The light-colored paint and landscaping along the front of the building enhance its inner-city appeal. However, in the course of the planned new construction of the municipal library, the demolition of the parking garage is planned for the next few years. Address: N2 Type: Carpark Usuage: Parking Construction: Concrete Floors: 8–9 Size: 60 × 35 m

K-S-BRÜCKE

p. 120–133

Kurt-Schumacher-Brücke Städtisches Tiefbauamt, 1968–1972 Spots: Banks, Curbs, Gaps, Rails Planning the construction of this 1800 meter long bridge linking Mannheim and Ludwigshafen, proved to be a difficult process. This was because it was necessary to span a 250-meter section of the Rhine without supports so as not to disturb the shipping traffic passing underneath. This was achieved by opting for a suspension bridge with a central pylon. The pylon is the anchor point for the three pairs of steel cables that support the two sections of the bridge – 288 meters in the direction of Mannheim and 148 meters on the right bank of the Rhine. Made of reinforced concrete, the pylon has become a landmark of Mannheim. Address: Mannheim–Ludwighafen Type: Bridge Usuage: Traffic Construction: Steel / Concrete Height: 30 m Pylon: 1 Length: 1800 m
