Dreamy, suggestive, exciting, or simply aesthetic: nude photography has many sides. Not only does it reflect the social or artistic progression of history, but it also enlightens us about ideals of beauty, emancipation, and role models, as well as the openness of the society in which it is created. At the same time, nude photography, just like other photography trends, is always evolving and will continue to do so. Historically, the first nude photographs can be traced back to the 1940s. Analog photography had been developed only a few years earlier, so it is not surprising that mankind was quick to make its own likeness in any sort of circumstance a pervasive subject—the depiction of naked bodies in painting and sculpture had been normal since ancient times. Nevertheless, photographs of them were frowned upon and were considered pornography, which was banned. In the early days, therefore, nude ­photography was mainly packaged as study material or sold to artists for use as models to justify the explicit depictions for the time. Since then, however, nude photography has become virtually ubiquitous. The sexual revolution of the 1960s as well as the discovery that “sex sells” were contributing factors, alongside the ­emergence of the Internet and widespread digitalization. This allowed explicit content and pornography to be circulated considerably faster and more widely, which not only influenced

social attitudes toward nudity and sexuality in general but also had an impact on ideas of beauty and equality between men and ­women. Nowadays, social media has almost caused an over­saturation of nude photography—many photographers are ­therefore particularly concerned about trying to re-­establish a normal relationship with this genre. Some possible ways to achieve this are an emphasized natural or artistic staging— avoiding digital image editing and processing could also be beneficial. Instant photography, an area that has always fascinated a large group of professional and amateur photographers, plays a special role in this development. In recent years, its fanbase has grown even larger, no doubt due in part to the reemergence of retro trends. In a world where digital images are often buried on hard drives and fewer and fewer photos find their way into photo albums or onto walls, analog photography offers a special appeal to many photographers: many are interested in the technical intricacies of their camera gear, however, images that cannot be viewed immediately and which sometimes have to be developed at great expense, are held in much higher esteem by both the photographer and the viewer. Instant photography constitutes a special case here— the development of the photo is in the photographer’s own hands, so it possesses an almost artisanal charm. The shaking of the film, which is no longer necessary with some systems but can still ­often be observed, even has pop-cultural significance now and can even be found in song lyrics, for example. The possibilities for artistic experimentation with the medium are also diverse: in some cases, the films transform colors in such a way that it’s possible to achieve virtually the exact look of Instagram filters or vignettes. In addition, many photographers use expired films, heat or bend them, and thus personalize the resulting image more and more. Films with different colored borders, available for some systems, also greatly influence the impact of the photograph. Especially in nude photography, interesting effects can be achieved this way: instant photos
