udging by skyrunning’s 2013 upward climb, 2014 won’t disappoint. Kilian’s extraordinary new records on Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn focussed the attention of millions of fans across the world on a growing sport, familiar to some, new to many. Since its birth twenty odd years ago, the sport has come a long way and skyrunning’s best ambassador has re-launched the original concept of climbing mountains fast and light to a new generation… and nourished our dreams. As you will see in the coming years, those towering summits will always represent our biggest source of inspiration – along with those that climb them!

2014 will see further development of the globalisation of the sport with the Skyrunner ® National Series, kick-started last year and now counting ten countries with their own circuit. The ISF World Ranking moves forward with 71 races on which this year’s points will be based. Highlighting 2014, the World Championships will be held at the end of June in the most iconic outdoor sports arena, Chamonix. Some 5,000 runners from more than 50 countries will descend here to compete among the best of the best for the individual titles and prizes and medals for their countries. Adding to this explosive mix, the ISF will hold their general assembly here, welcoming member countries old and new. Now counting more than 30 nations, the climb for Olympic recognition is well underway. Not just dreams, but very tangible steps also, thanks to the precious support of our partners - all driven by the same values and inspiration that our wonderful sport in the mountains offers. Less cloud. More sky!

ULTRAMARATHON & VERTICAL KILOMETER

ENG

An incredible ultra marathon 83 km long, straddles the island of La Palma, the most western of the Canary Islands. The course begins on the Atlantic coast and climbs across the Teneguía and San Antonio volcanoes on the south of the island, one of the most recent natural landmasses in Europe. On leaving the ocean, the course ascends for more than 2,400 metres to the highest point of the island, the Astrophysical Observatory on the Roque de los Muchachos, one of the world’s major star-gazing observatories. From here, a steep and insidious path descends again, to the sea. After many hours of punishing racing, the final ascent leads to the welcoming finish in the town of Los Llanos de Aridane.

ESP

MAY ENG

Renowned as one of the most popular races on the Skyrunner World Series calendar, the event attracts some of the best runners worldwide. Every year, 500 athletes are selected from around 2,300 entry requests. As in the past, but today more than ever, thousands of walkers, hikers, hunters, and nature lovers visit the Aratz-Aizkorri Natural Park. In 2001, the Association of Friends of Aizkorri was founded and organised an annual excursion in the mountains and a pilgrimage to the Sancti Spiritus at the foot of the San Adrián cave. In 2002, as one of the Aratz-Aizkorri Natural Park initiatives, the town of Zegama, together with the Amezti Mountain Club and more than 250 volunteers launched the first Alpine-Zegama Aizkorri Marathon. The success and reputation of the race are thanks to three factors: the gruelling course with more than 5,400 metres of ascent and descent; the stunning natural beauty of its setting; and the massive participation of both runners and spectators. ESP

The Ice-Trail Tarentaise (ITT), 65km long and with 5,000m vertical climb, lies in the high mountains in the heart of the Killy Espace and the Vanoise National Park in a breathtaking panorama. The start and finish are in Val d’Isère, the internationally renowned ski resort. Now in it’s third year, the ITT is nothing less than an “extraordinary event”. The participants were unanimous about the difficulty of the course, today a point of reference for European “mountain” circuits. The altitude, often severe weather and difficult technical sections provide an exceptional challenge. The course continually flirts with 3,000m altitude and is currently the highest in Europe. In fact, the ITT sums up a host of superlatives – including an aid station at the Col de l’Iseran (27,764m), Europe’s highest road pass. FRA

The famous Italian Dolomites, a UNESCO world heritage site, attract sportsmen for the winter skiing and summer climbing, making it an ideal location for a major international skyrunning event. This spectacular race embodies the skyrunning concept to perfection: the quickest way from a town to the summit of a mountain and back. The venue is a long time favourite among the world’s top runners and over the years has hosted the 2008 SkyGames, the 2008 ISF constitutional assembly; the 2010 Vertical Kilometer World Championships; and the 2009, 2011 and 2013 European Skyrunning Championships for the Vertical and Sky disciplines. Once again, the Dolomites feature prominently on the World Series calendar, with races in both the Vertical and Sky Series. An extraordinary weekend unfolds where the world’s top ranked runners aim to get points in both races. ITA

Set in the spectacular world-class ski resort of Snowbird in the Wasatch Mountain Range in Utah, the 50 km course traverses three peaks with 3,660m elevation gain and loss. The Speedgoat 50k was the brainstorm of ultra runner Karl Meltzer and the Snowbird events director who, back in 2007, came up with the idea to create the toughest 50k in the US at the Snowbird Ski Resort. With limited acreage to work with, they designed a route to satisfy the mountain runner who likes vertical climb at altitude. The course is run entirely on established trails and in many places gives the runner a chance to climb some steep ascents and run down rocky, technical terrain. The low point of the race is at 2,322m, with the high point at 3,368m. The average elevation of the entire race is around 2,900m, which Meltzer describes as “a real lung sucker”. ESP

Kima Trophy

august ENG

The Kima Trophy Ultra SkyMarathon has for 19 years been a landmark event for ultra runners thanks to the highly technical 50 km course over seven passes with 3,800m vertical climb - a massive 7,600m of ascent and descent. Treacherous moraine, snowfields and exposed crests feature largely on the course, with loose boulders and fixed ropes required to assist the vertical ascents and descents. The race was conceived in 1994 by organiser Ilde Marchetti to commemorate her brother and, with the help of skyrunning pioneers Marino Giacometti, Adriano Greco and Fabio Meraldi, it became not only a reality in 1995, but grew to be a legend. To ensure the runners’ safety and for the protection of the rugged mountain environment, the extremely technical course is capped at 250 with tight cut-off times. A biennial event, it’s defined by Kilian Jornet, 2010 and 2012 winner, as “the most spectacular race in the world”. An icon and a dream for many. ITA

Montana’s aptly named Big Sky Resort rolls out the carpet to welcome America’s first Skyrunner Ultra Series final with The Rut 50K, flanked by a Vertical Kilometer to the lofty heights of Lone Peak. Race founders and organisers are world-class ultra runners Mike Wolfe and Mike Foote, who bring on board both their running and organising experience to create a challenging and spectacular event true to skyrunning values. The race takes its name from the magic of early fall when the leaves turn to gold and the elk mating season begins with The Rut. Close to Yellow Stone Park, Big Sky, primarily known for its winter activities, is in fact America’s largest ski resort offering ideal skyrunning terrain to the 3,403m summit of Lone Peak, the highest point in both events. Limone sul Garda, ITALY

Limone Extreme Skyrace

10&11 october

Vertical Grèste de la Mughéra

ENG

Some races seem to write their own destiny. The Limone Extreme SkyRace and Vertical Kilometer enjoyed enormous success as the 2013 Skyrunner World Series finals, and 2014 looks set for a repeat performance. The events represent an important occasion for Limone, Riva del Garda and Ledro where outdoor mountain sports are widely practised. Limone counts just 1,160 inhabitants and, since the 1940’s, could be accessed only by the Lake or across the mountains. Today, Limone is one of the most frequented tourist resorts in the area, famous for its lemon groves, the prestigious olive oil and the longevity of its people. The steep lime cliffs that ascend skywards from the lake are perfect for the two skyrunning disciplines, rewarding the VK spectators with an incredible night time spectacle and the SkyRace participants with a breath-taking view from above, down to the lake below.
