President’s Message

“When we, with like minds, act together, we can change lives.” —Beth Finnerty, President and CEO

Our community of “like minds” is growing. Last year, long-time sustaining donors joined with first-time donors and corporate sponsors to help advance our mission. Through their investments in Skyland Trail, these friends and donors demonstrated their belief in the power of community action to make recovery from mental illness a real and attainable possibility for hundreds of clients and their families. And look what your combined support helped us accomplish! In October 2016, more than 300 like-minded individuals gathered to celebrate the opening of the Rollins Campus for young adults. Expanding our capacity and adding a new level of specialization to our residential treatment program was an incredible milestone. Similarly, proceeds from our 2016 Annual Campaign and fundraising events helped us award $1 million in financial aid to our clients and families. Be sure to read how Lizzie relied on financial aid to complete treatment so she could return to college.

Finally, contributions in 2016 supported a powerful combination of expert professionals, respectful therapeutic spaces, and evidencebased care that, together, empowered our clients to heal and thrive. The summary of treatment outcomes provides a by-thenumbers snapshot of client recovery. We hear from our clients that there isn’t just one thing that helps them get better. It often takes all the components of our whole person approach, working together, to help our clients change how they view themselves and the world around them. And that whole person approach takes all of us, our friends and donors in the community, to make it possible. Thank you for being a part of the Skyland Trail community of “like minds.” Beth Finnerty President & CEO

Year In Review

Together with our friends and donors, we opened a new campus to serve more clients and expanded our reach in the community. socialization and support during evening hours and on the weekends.

Opening of the Rollins Campus On October 13, Skyland Trail celebrated the grand opening of the Rollins Campus for young adults. Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter joined nearly 300 guests for a ribbon cutting program followed by tours of the 3.5 acre campus. The opening of the Rollins Campus added an additional layer of specialization at the residential level. While most clients still come to the Charles B. West main campus during the day to participate in therapeutic groups together, our residential communities – Rollins Campus and South Campus – now offer age-appropriate

<< increase in admissions

Adult clients ages 26 and older at the South Campus focus on skills and growth opportunities to help them navigate where they are in their lives. Young adults ages 18 to 25 at the Rollins Campus participate in activities focused on developing skills to successfully navigate the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The opening of the Rollins Campus made this new layer of specialization possible. Treatment • Our treatment team conducted an in-depth analysis of our dual diagnosis program for clients with both a mental health diagnosis and a co-occurring substance use disorder. As a result, we engaged specialized expertise and launched a task force to improve our ability to support this growing population. • Our psychiatric team grew to five staff physicians.

Research • The article “Measuring and Facilitating Client Engagement with Financial Incentives: Implications for Improving Clinical Outcomes in a Mental Health Setting,” written by the Skyland Trail research department, was published in the September 2016 issue of Community Mental Health Journal. Education • We organized seven local workshops and five national workshops that engaged more than 500 mental health professionals. Conference presentations and speakers bureau events reached an additional 1,700 individuals. • In February, we hosted our second annual RESPECT Institute training course, offered by the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. Nine Skyland Trail graduates learned ways to transform their personal recovery stories into educational and inspirational presentations.

• In May, Skyland Trail, in partnership with the Emory University School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and The Carter Center, hosted the 5th annual Dorothy C. Fuqua Lecture Series. More than 300 guests heard from panelists Virginia Senator Creigh Deeds, mental health advocate Julie Hersh, and The Honorable Patrick Kennedy. Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter delivered welcoming remarks while Skyland Trail chief medical officer, Dr. Ray Kotwicki, moderated the panel discussion. • In September, 30 mental health professionals and education consultants from around the country attended the first Professionals’ Weekend at Skyland Trail. In addition to receiving education credits, hearing from alumni clients and families, and learning from experts in the field, guests had the opportunity to see and stay in the new Rollins Campus before we began serving clients in October.

Butterfly Boardwalk In July, Edna and Mike Wellons were joined by family and friends to dedicate the Katherine Calhoun Wellons Butterfly Boardwalk, named for their late daughter. The boardwalk and gardens – generously funded by Edna and Mike, contributions from Katherine’s family and friends, and donations from local garden clubs – provide a place of connection and restoration for clients and families. “Edna and I were thrilled to be able to name this boardwalk in memory of our daughter,

Improving Treatment for Dual Diagnosis The Fraser-Parker Foundation provided seed funding to enhance our Dual Diagnosis Program for clients with a primary mood, thought, or anxiety disorder, who also have a co-occurring substance misuse issue. In 2016, 60 percent of clients admitted had a co-occurring substance misuse diagnosis. Thank you Skyland Trail Staff In 2016, 100 percent of Skyland Trail staff contributed to the Annual Fund. Prevention and Safety A $6,000 in-kind gift from the Mylan Foundation allowed us to ensure that EpiPens are available at all of our campuses.

Financial Aid

34%

While clients and families are responsible for a portion of their treatment costs, our Mark C. West Financial Aid Program helps fill the gap. Financial aid helps clients stay in treatment longer, giving them time to fully develop the skills needed to sustain recovery and prevent relapse after leaving Skyland Trail. Beyond the financial impact, financial aid awards relieve stress and help families focus on what is truly important – supporting their loved ones and helping their families heal.

"There is a fellowship of people at Skyland Trail who know exactly what I'm going through. The staff explained my symptoms in a way that I can understand, and I've been able to develop self-compassion. Now I can understand my symptoms and I can function in the community." — Ashley

Treatment Outcomes

Together, we can offer hope and a better future. I had been miserable for the past 20 years. I didn’t know who I was, and I never was given the space to figure that out. For years, I had been seeing a psychiatrist for a learning disability. But I felt like no one was catching this pain I was in. I was convinced that I was “unfixable.” That this was going to be a lifelong thing. While I was in the hospital, I was fortunate to meet someone who said, “This thing you have, it has a name. It’s called Borderline Personality Disorder and it’s not surprising that you’re in this much pain.” She also said, “There’s this place called Skyland Trail...” At Skyland Trail, I began to see that I had been using these unhealthy coping mechanisms to shield myself from the constant pain. I learned that what I had tried before – just changing my thought process – was not going to make the pain go away. I was skeptical at first. If you don’t have hope for long enough, it feels dangerous to

hope again. But then I started to see proof that it was working. I worked hard because I wanted to get as much out of my time at Skyland Trail as I could. As I worked, I started to get hope back slowly. At some point I had a breakthrough. Not only were skills good in theory, but they started working really really well. Distress was still distress, but it was validated, and tolerable. That changed my life. Being able to hear from others - and see for myself - that “yeah, of course you’re feeling this. This is how you deal with it. This is how you work through it and continue to live your life.” It revealed my life worth living to me. Slowly. Receiving financial aid support from Skyland Trail means that I don’t have to dip into my college savings. I really can go home and start over. And I can’t thank you enough for that. I get to be and feel safe wherever I go now, and that feels like a miracle. Thank you. — Lizzie S., Skyland Trail graduate

why we give? How did you first become aware of Skyland Trail? During our early days in Atlanta, Skyland Trail was one of those organizations that kept coming to our attention, both through my work as a psychologist and through friends who had personal connections to it. Why did you decide to get involved? Ben and I each have people close to us who’ve faced the challenges of mental illness, and we recognize the life-saving importance of there being a strong organization like Skyland Trail in Atlanta.

Is there a specific moment that stands out in your mind when you think of the impact of Skyland Trail? On our first visit to Skyland Trail, we had lunch with a young man who had been the beneficiary of its services. He had an interesting life story that was – except for the illness he was experiencing – not dissimilar from our own. We saw that day how Skyland Trail was giving his life story the chance to continue in a healthy and productive way. Why do you include Skyland Trail in your philanthropic giving? Ben and I are compelled both by the great need that Skyland Trail is filling for individuals, as well as how it is reshaping common perceptions and conversation about mental illness at-large. — Allison Hill Allison Hill is a Skyland Trail Advisory Board member and donor.

In Memory In 2016, we were saddened by the loss of several individuals who contributed greatly to the establishment of Skyland Trail as an important part of the Atlanta healthcare and nonprofit communities.

David Lowance, MD In the broader Atlanta healthcare community, David Lowance helped save many lives through his private practice and his support of organ transplantation programs. He was also passionate about helping adults recover from mental illness and worked to advanced Skyland Trail’s mission for more than 15 years, first as a Board member from 2003 to 2009, and then as a member of our Board Emeritus until his death.

Edward E. Noble Ed Noble was a founding board member of Skyland Trail, and his early dedication was a critical force in helping Skyland Trail take shape in Atlanta. Support from the Noble Foundation helped build the Health and Education Center, which opened in 1999 and contains the Noble Building. It continues to serve as the hub of treatment and psychiatric services for Skyland Trail clients. Ed served on the Board of Directors from 1990 to 2010 and on the Board Emeritus from 2011 until his passing.

Majorie E. West Marjorie West helped establish Skyland Trail with her husband, Charles B. West. Their support spanned more than two decades, helping Skyland Trail grow from one campus serving four clients to four campuses serving hundreds of clients and families each year. The residential wing in the new Rollins Campus for young adults was dedicated in her honor in 2016 as the Majorie E. West Residential Wing.

John P. Turman John P. Turman worked as part of the Skyland Trail development team for many years, forging relationships and partnerships which will continue to help Skyland Trail grow and expand in reach and capacity for years to come. John’s lifetime of work the fields of education and mental health helped connect many people with successful, healthy futures.
