The Daeil Festival

2014 The Daeil Press _ School News

by Bu Yerin

Carnaval, La Tomatina, and Boryeung Mud Festival are all famous festivals from around the world. These festivals are so well known that starting from some point, they became the symbol of each host country. In this sense, the Daeil Festival can also be referred to as a symbol of none other than Daeil Foreign Language Highschool itself. Though relatively, it is very small in size and in some ways not as interesting as these international events, the Daeil Festival boasts uniqueness, and its enthusiastic atmosphere. From July 23rd to July 24th, Daeil Foreign Language High school held what may be the most anticipated event throughout the school year: the Daeil Festival. During the two days, each student club provided various exhibitions, performances, and activities which all clearly showed what they have achieved in the past 6 months. None were the same in any way; every single club had their own different flavors. The first day of the festival started off with a performance by Huimori, Daeil’s one and only

Pungmul-norri club. The rich sound of the Korean traditional percussion instruments filled Su-in Hall, and soon the once dull and stressful school grounds were filled with a festive atmosphere. Afterwards, LA ACA, the comedy performance club, presented a hilarious play that forced even the most depressed students to stifle a laugh. Around noon, the female choir, ATTIC, performed various songs in Dasan Hall, which were lovely and very well-practiced. Liebe took the stage next, showing off their fluent German skills through an interesting play. A series of mind-blowing magic tricks followed, which were performed by CSI. At the same time, in Suin Hall, Barcarole, Daeil’s biggest choir moved everyone with their solemn songs. This strong impression continued throughout the orchestra, Concertino’s performance. Meanwhile, inside the school building, in classrooms, hallways, and even in outdoor gardens, other clubs were busy showing the results of their hard work. While the school’s educating volunteer work club, D-MENTOR led a series of board games, the science club EUREKA amazed everyone with the fascinating experiment of dissecting a pig. In the meantime, the library club, PAPYRUS, held a bazaar for old books; the popular art club CANI put handmade unique items for sale; the creative arts club PASTEL took

responsibility for everyone’s nail art; the Korean newspaper club HAKBOSA exhibited poems written by the students themselves; and DIVA sold bracelets and exhibited photos of their volunteer work.

A long line weaved out of the DUALITY booth – the idea of getting to hear their fortune from a friend or senior must have impressed many students. It was the same for INHWAJI – the members of this photo arts club were taking “Paparazzi” pictures based on various orders they had received. As the sun was setting on the first day of the festival, the students all moved their steps towards Su-in Hall, to see the concert of Daeil’s band, S.of.T. Though outside was quite chilly due to the rain, the Hall was heated with the enthusiastic performance. Following up the band’s show was a musical played by DRAMA CLUB. The finale of the day was led by G. O., the dance club, during which the cheers of the students could be heard even from the outside. DIC, the movie-making club, launched off a good start of the second day of the festival; showing the student body the films they had made. DFBS also screened short clips – all having to do with the theme, ‘청춘.’ The boy choir CASCADE’s songs resonated through Dasan Hall as they performed. Shalloon, the Nanta club impressed everyone with the harmonious meeting of a play and Nanta. The last performers of all, Sorae, who also presented a play, received a strong standing ovation. And with that, the 30th Daeil Festival came to an end.

2014 The Daeil Press _ School News

Press, the English newspaper club, led a survey on various aspects of school life. They also attracted many students through the cool, refreshening activity of water balloon-throwing. The advertisement club, GLAD, sold cute badges, cell phone decorations, and many more cute items that were hand-made. The Christian club, CALEB’s booth was buzzing with excitement as a game of darts was played. Yong-bong sold many beverages, suiting the club’s purpose to study different types of tea.

The Election for School President at Daeil

03

by Kim Daehyun

2014 The Daeil Press _ School News

On August 20th, there was an election to select the school president and vice president of Daeil Foreign Language High School (DFLHS). Each candidate and their assistants worked hard to become the next president or vice president. One school president was elected from the 2nd grade students and two school vice- presidents were elected, one from the 2nd grade students and the other from the 1st grade students. Here are some details about the election.

Plan for Election To have an election on August 20th, there were some procedures for the smooth progress of the election. First, several weeks before the election, the Election Commission announced the plan for how the election was going to be held. Then, the students who wanted to be a candidate for the election had to register the names of themselves and their assistants on the list. Any students who attended school and had a letter of recommendation from the teachers could be a candidate. This registration finished a week before the election, on August 13th. After registration, candidates and their helpers had some time to think about how to publicize themselves to students efficiently. They used their evening self-study time. Then from August 18th to August 19th, the campaigning took place when the students arrived, and in break time and lunch time. After everything, on August 20th, the election was held and the result was announced that evening.

Result After the interesting competition, one school president and two school vice- presidents were selected as the new members of the Student Council for DFLHS. As school President, candidate Choi Kyuseon was elected and for school vice-President, candidates Baek Seungheon from 2nd grade and Ahn Youngeun from 1st grade were selected. Although all the candidates did their best to get the students’ votes, students had to distinguish between the winners and non-winners. All the students are looking forward to seeing the progressive activities of the new members of our Student Council.

Meeting with My Promising Juniors in School

04

by Lee Donghun

2014 The Daeil Press _ School News On September 25th, there was a big event at Daeil Foreign Language High School, which was to promote our high school to juniors of each of Daeil student’s alma maters. By encouraging students to visit their old schools, our school has tried to discover and foster potential talents until now. Carrying 20 information brochures and two leaflets, more than 300 students went to their own loved old schools after finishing the intramural competition. Based on their knowledge and contents of the brochures, representative students had to explain and introduce our school; DFLHS to their juniors passionately. Posting the leaflets on the wall and giving information books to all of them were another mission. I also visited my alma mater 4 months after visiting once on Teacher’s Day. Thanks to my old teachers’ big help, I could get a chance to meet my junior colleagues at the school’s counseling office. For 40 minutes, I struggled to inform them of the entrance procedures and unique programs in my high school with my own knowledge and experiences. This activity can improve students’ publicizing abilities and they can have a great affection or be proud of their high school. Most of all, it gives us a great opportunity to reminisce about memories of our middle school life by meeting teachers and alumni whom we have missed.

by Cho Yeeun

October 22th~24th, 2014 freshmen of Daeil foreign language High School went to Jeju Island for friendship camp. Classes were divided into three groups, group A for classes 4, 8, 9, and 12, group B for classes 2, 3, 6, and 10, and group C for classes 1, 5, 7, and 11. Our teachers, Kim Jin Kwang and Son Seok Yeol tried hard to make this trip enjoyable and to arrange for us to try local foods which we would not eat commonly in Seoul. On the first day, the students of group C gathered at Kimpo domestic airport at 9 a.m. Students landed at Jeju international airport at 12 p.m. The weather was bad and rained cats and dogs. Students ate Jeonbok Ttukbaegi for lunch and headed to the World’s heritage museum. There, students could learn about Jeju more and watched a 4D movie, ‘Finding Siromi fruit.’ After looking

around the museum, students rode on rail bikes. Even though the weather was bad, the students enjoyed rail biking a lot. Students could travel around the fields and saw cows, Oreums(hills made by volcanic eruptions) and windmills. For dinner, students ate their much wished for all-you-can-eat pork belly. Around 7 p.m., the students arrived at Kumho Resort. They unpacked their belongings and had a ‘Golden Bell’ quiz about Jeju Island. Prizes were free tickets for the waterpark. After heated competition, the winners took the prizes and other students prepared for tomorrow’s travel, wishing the weather to be stellar.

Friendship Camp Travel Jeju Island

On the last morning, everyone had breakfast and packed their belongings to leave Kumho resort. After they loaded their belongings on the bus, they headed for ‘The Horse Park’ to watch a horse show. The show was about Jumong, founder of Korea’s ancient country Goguryeo. Performers showed unbelievable talents, surprising many people. After the show the students went to Sin Woo Sung town to eat their last meal on Jeju, a bulgogi stew. On the way to the airport, everyone went to Dokkaebi Road and experienced riding in a car that moved alone even though it was an uphill road. Soon they arrived at the airport and had some time to buy souvenirs. Group C was the last team who arrived at Seoul, at 5 p.m. The Friendship Camp of Daeil Foreign Language High School was an unforgettable experience for many students. They became closer than before, knew each other more and could enjoy themselves without having a burden of study.

2014 The Daeil Press _ School News

On the second day morning, students had breakfast in a buffet restaurant. The first schedule was set late, considering convenience for the students. At 9 a.m., group C moved to Jung moon beach to take some pictures and have a walk. Then, we went to ‘Museum is alive’, which was famous for its 3D pictures so that people could take funny photographs. For about one hour students could enjoy taking pictures and then left the museum. Students, who were exhausted from taking pictures, enjoyed a spicy seafood stew in Daeyoo Land. Then, they quickly moved to Ecoland, where they took a train and walked around the beautiful forest and fields. There were many trees, rivers, cows and windmills. Also there, students took pictures a lot. They then went to a tangerine farm to pick some tangerines, only to find that there were too many flies. Sadly, they had to wait until the flies were gone. They finally picked some tangerines and had a competition of eating tangerines fast. The last dinner deserved to be grand-so, students had a buffet dinner at the resort. And of course, the last night deserves to be spent sleeplessly-so, students were gathered to spend the whole night together, playing games, eating foods and enjoying the talent show.

The Festival of Talent; Daeil English Skit Contest 2014

06

2014 The Daeil Press _ School News

by Cho Sohyun

On October 20th, 2014, a special contest was held at Daeil Foreign Language High School. It was the final round of the annual English skit contest. This year more than 50 teams participated in the preliminary round which was held on September 30th, and these teams showed their talent. Throughout the fervent competition, finally 11 teams were selected and got a ticket into the final round. In the final round, participants had to perform within 3 minutes with a message in their skit. All 11 teams came up with a creative story, stellar acting skills and cohesive team work. They also conveyed different messages such as ‘we should not rely on luck’ by comparing two men’s lives. Some of the teams also performed about the current social issues, for instance, students rights and the negative influence of the internet society. Regardless of the grade of the prize, all the participants show their passion in English by performing. The participants could not only improve their English skills but also creativity and cooperation spirit. The judges of the contest said that they were all amazed by students’ talent and passion. They also mentioned that the Daeil English skit contest was a very unique contest that should be preserved and developed more. The grand prize was given to the 2nd grader team, ‘A Bunch of Clowns’. Their play was about the future society in which sleeping has been eliminated and students are like studying machines under the minister of Education’s control. They pointed out that students themselves should be the one to stand up for their own rights and make changes. This year’s English Skit Contest was a festival which could share an idea rather than a mere competition.

Hospital Denies Malpractice in Singer’s Death

07

By Hwang Sungwon

However, the hospital says he must have eaten something wrong before he was taken to the hospital. They say that the ‘S’ hospital is irresponsible for Shin’s death. The hospital that performed abdominal surgery on Shin Hae-chul, a famous pop singer, denied the autopsy result which implies that medical negligence might have caused his death. In other words, the hospital strongly denied the allegation.

2014 The Daeil Press _ Social

Police earlier revealed that Asan hospital noted a hole about a centimeter long in his intestine when he was transported to the general hospital. But forensic experts said that they could not see the alleged hole in Shin Hae-chul’s small intestine because Asan hospital had already cut part of his small intestine and stitched it during the emergency operation. As for food debris found inside the pericardium, experts said that Shin appears to have eaten meals as soon as being discharged from the hospital although he was not supposed to do so, deteriorating his condition. If Shin died under an unfair situation, the hospital should acknowledge their fault in his death and commemorate him. Then all the misunderstandings will disappear.

The death of the prominent singer Shin Hae-chul has brought sorrow to many people. It has been a big issue among people because of the malpractice of the hospital and its denial. In Shin’s funeral parlor, many related singers related to him sobbed and couldn’t conceal their regrets about his death. Shin Hae-chul was pronounced dead at the Asan Medical Center a week ago after being transferred from another hospital where he had received an operation. He had been in a state of coma for five days after his surgery, so his wife filed a complaint with the police against the hospital to look into potential medical negligence. At that time, Shin Hae-chul had complained about abdominal pain, and even said that he was going to die because of the pain.

Students in Gyeonggi-Do Receive The Right to Sleep More The 9 o’clock Class Policy

08

by Lee Wonyoung

2014 The Daeil Press _ Society

From September 1st, 2014, most elementary, middle and high schools in Gyeonggi-Do have changed their class schedules, to start at 9 o’clock in the morning. This is one hour later from the original 8 a.m. start time. The Education Office of Gyeonggi-Do has announced that they wanted the students to take the right to sleep more, and have breakfast with their families. However, not all of the students are giving positive comments to this policy. As schools begin later, the time to go home from school has been delayed as well. Because of this reason, students are having a hardship trying to adjust to their afternoon schedule to their new school schedule, some often barely having the time to eat dinner. On top of this, there have been large complaints from the families where both of the parents go to work early. The parents who used to take their kids to school on their way to work cannot even see their children’s faces before they get out of the house in the morning anymore.

To these kinds of negative reactions from the citizens, the Education Office announced once again that this policy was created from the student’s suggestions. However, there is a contradiction in this statement. The policy they are enforcing was one of the election pledges of the current superintendent of schools in Gyeonggi-Do, who was elected by the citizens of the region. Yet these “citizens” only include the people whose age is over 19, those who are no longer students. Therefore, the act of calling this policy as the result of the students’ suggestion must be considered incorrect. This policy is not being applied to the seniors (third grade of high school), since the scholastic ability test that they are going to take in November is scheduled to start at 8:10 a.m. The controversy over this matter does not seem to be over soon, and it seems that there needs some changes to be made when enforcing this policy.

Scotland Referendum: Choose to Stay in United Kingdom

09

By Lee Gahyoung

2014 The Daeil Press _ Politics

Reasons why Scotland wants to be independent from The United Kingdom First, the Scottish race is different from England. Scotland, Ireland and Wales are descendents of the Kelts, while England are descendents of Anglo-Saxons and Normans. The Kelts arrived to England territory. However, after Rome collapsed, they kicked out England because of the Anglo-Saxons and Normans. As a result, they were forced to move to a territory which are now called Scotland, and Wales. Second, the language is also different. The Scottish use both English, Scottish and the Gaelic language. Scottish are English from Scotland that is developed autonomously from real ‘English’. Scottish accent, pronunciation intonation are totally different from English. For this reason, in England TV programs, they make fun of Scottish. Also, Gaelic language is from ancient Kelts English. In the northern part of Scotland, people prefer the Gaelic language to English. Third is history. It was since 18th century Scotland and England shared their history. After Anglo-Saxons and Normans took over Scotland, they invaded Scotland frequently. From that time, they were not in good relations. When Nazis invaded Scotland in World War ll, Scotland said that they were not part of England. This shows that Scotland has wanted to be independent from England for a long time. For other reasons, soccer and rugby teams are already separated from England. Also, Scotland has a great amount of North Sea oil field and gas. It takes up to 90 percent of the UK. If Scotland got separated from the UK, England will have a lot damage.

Vote Results

After Vote...

On September 18th, there was a local referendum in Scotland. It was about whether to become independent from the United Kingdom, or to stay. It was a nip and tuck match, but with the result of 2,001,926 votes for no won over 1,617,989 for yes.

However the vote results show that Scotland decided to remain in the U.K. After the vote, Queen Elizabeth urged people in Britain to be united “in a spirit of mutual respect and support”. She also spoke “Knowing the people of Scotland as I do, I have no doubt that Scots, like others throughout the United Kingdom, are able to express strongly held opinions before coming together again in a spirit of mutual respect and support,” People cried or smiled at the result. Most countries showed relief at the result.

The Incident of Private Yoon, Accidental Mortality or Murder?

10

by Shin Hyunjae

2014 The Daeil Press _ Politics

Private Yoon who was in the army of the 28th Division died of a harsh act from senior soldiers. On 31st of July, the Military Center for Human Rights announced the military investigation about habitual assault and cruel act which is applied to Private Yoon by senior soldiers. According to the military investigation, Private Yoon joined the army in December 2013 and was sent into his division in February 2014. Since then senior soldiers had beat Private Yoon by reason of his inarticulate way of speaking. How cruel the act was made people so astounded. The senior soldiers gave him a punishment and made him not to be able to sleep. They threw the tennis balls because they thought he was faking his illness. They also forced him to eat all of the toothpaste and poured 1.5 liter of water in his mouth while lying down. Some people mourned his death or the others reproached the corresponding military.

Increased Council Tax: An Anticipated Boomerang

12

by Choi Kangwoo

2014 The Daeil Press _ Economy

On September 13, the Ministry of Security and Public Administration announced a plan to increase various kinds of taxes and to decrease the previous tax reduction rate for council taxes. The government is expecting to be able to collect additional revenues of 2.3 trillion won through the increase. The public is worried about the tax increase, since taxes for daily-life products have risen sharply. The government is explaining this as an unavoidable change and readjustment of the council tax system that reflects current inflation, but still, strong criticism has accompanied the measure. The conservative media points out that the government is hiding the purpose of the tax increase, and justifying it as if they are trying to follow the change in the economic environment and protect the people’s health through the increase. They suggest that the government should admit and announce the need for the tax increase and find a more fundamental solution for current revenue deficits. On the other hand, the progressive voices strongly criticize the government increasing the tax that critically affects middle and lower classes. They expect the government to increase the income and corporate tax, which is mainly targeted on rich people. However, both of them are missing, or intentionally overlooking an important and fundamental cause of the tax increase. The government needs to expand their budget since they have to cover the increasing expenditure on social welfare. In the last presidential election, candidates from both sides competitively pledged to introduce social welfare policies like free day care services for working parents. Everyone, including both the candidates and voters, knew the potential risk of such an expansive welfare provision, but most of them ignored it. Now, its result turns out to be additional economic pressure on the public. What the government should concentrate on is decreasing the scale of current social welfare. There are many unnecessary parts in the welfare system, which provide various services like free child care and school lunch for those who don’t need them. Moreover, the welfare budget is a fixed expenditure that cannot be changed without amendments, which worsens the situation. If the government continues with the present welfare policy, the budget deficit will only get more serious, no matter how much taxes are increased. Part of the responsibility for the budget problem is on the public, as well. Even though everyone was certainly aware of the fact that excessive social welfare could undermine the government’s financial standing, not many went against it. If this indifference continues, more populism will follow. We should not forget about the aftermath o f such policies, and have wisdom not to throw a boomerang that will only hurt us in the end.

“Roaring Currents”, Distortion of History?

13

by Seo Hyunduk

Recently, the movie “roaring currents” has gotten criticism that it is historically incorrect and those critiques are developing into conflicts between the movie producers and the audience. The main problem is the portrayal of general Baeseul. In the film, he is shown as the person who attempts the assassination of general Lee Sun Sin and afterwards, burns down Joseon’s ship, “Geobukseon”. However, general Baeseul actually did none of the things above and all he did was run away to avoid the battle which he thought, Joseon had no chance of winning(he was executed for this action). The movie producers might have added these ‘unrealistic’ actions of the general to make the film more entertaining, but the false information the movie depicts can construct negative images of the general that he is decisive and selfish, and this is causing friction between the descendants of general Baeseul and the movie producers. There were actually legal actions taken on september 15th when the descendants of general Baeseul took action into their own hands and sued the director, scriptwriter and novelist for defamation of general Baeseul and their family name. They stated that the content which the movie showed defamed their family name and they requested for the movie to stop being screened in theaters. Also, the descendants of the general are not the only ones who are opposed to the character portrayal. Other historians and audiences are also coming towards the conclusion that the movie producers should take responsibility for putting out historically incorrect information.

With all the negative responses the movie has been getting, it has had an impact on the film’s reputation and authenticity. And after receiving such feedback, the producers have said to the media that they are currently receiving many opinions from various people ranging from historians to scholars about the matter and that they are trying to be careful as to gathering their official conclusion. So, the producers are yet to officially announce their side of the story, and the potential victims are reacting to this situation by saying that the movie producers should not just care about the fact that they are the 1st in the movie charts and consider the family name they have ran over and the defamation they had done. Although there are many people standing on the side of the descendants, there are still people saying that all of the conflict is unnecessary. They are stating that the original image of general Baeseul was not favorable in the first place (due to cowardly running away from the battle) and that people should not make a big deal about the portrayal in the film because a negative image is formed one way or the other. As you can see there are two sides to this problem and it is not likely to cool down at this point. In conclusion, there are no consequences or decisions confirmed at this moment, and only when the producers have stated their official opinion will this situation progress further. However, one thing that we can see from this situation is the fact that sensitive topics such as history or religion in media have to be dealt with extreme caution, because the more the content is successful and popular, the more effect it’s going to have on people’s thoughts on that particular subject. Therefore, the producers, writers, etc have the responsibility to stay true to the facts to avoid any misunderstandings or misinterpretations.

2014 The Daeil Press _ Entertainment

On July 30th 2014, the movie “Roaring Currents” was released and it was an instant hit. “Roaring Currents”was the first Korean movie to have sold 17 million tickets and its hype and popularity is constantly increasing. All of this may be due to the event the movie dealt with; which was the famous ‘battle of Myeongnyang’. It is the legendary battle between Joseon kingdom’s navy and the Japanese navy, and the reason why it is so famous and wellknown is because Joseon’s navy had only 12 ships going into this battle, while, on the other hand, the Japanese navy had 133 warships and at least 200 logistical ships. This movie ignites inner patriotism in us and while most ratings and reviews have been positive, some disagree.

Safety Ignorance of the Entertainment Business

2014 The Daeil Press _ Entertainment

“Ignoring Safety” is becoming an issue again. The girl group LADIES’ CODE was in a car accident on September 3rd as their van skidded and turned over. Through this accident, member Kwon Rise and Ko Eun bi lost their lives. Car crashes involving K-pop stars are not a passing phase. In 2007 a car which Super Junior got in was turned over and the member Gyu hyeon was severely wounded. Girl group Secret’s member Jung Ha na stopped her activity for a while because of an accident on an icy road. Besides many idol stars such as Dong bang Sin gi, Miss A, four minute have experienced great and small accidents. There are many reasons why the idol stars are frequently involved in safety accidents. First of all, with a significant change in the record industry, they mainly concentrate on event activity. These days selling CD does not earn much money. Also massive profit is not guaranteed through music downloading. Thus they make out a schedule which is based on events to earn enough money. In the case of famous idol groups, when they release albums and get prepared for work, a frenzy of scheduling begins. They have to struggle with lot of schedules such as singing programs, variety shows and events in each district. They barely sleep 1~2 hours a day -it’s a torturous regimen. A poor service environment in which managers have to work without holidays play a big role in decreasing management supervision as well. As the number of entertainers is increasing; but the staff is decreasing, the entertainment world is suffering from a manpower shortage. Agencies are urging caution and requesting more attention on this issue; but they still have not suggested clear solutions. It is a time for entertainers and management companies to pay closer attention. Kim Jin Ho pop culture critic said “Repeated

tragic accidents are taking place due to overscheduling. It is not proper to request mental strength from managers and staff. Instead we should improve on unjust structure, build a more humane working environment.”

2. About the 17th edition of the Asian Games in Incheon 1. The Opening ceremony The opening ceremony for the 17th edition of the Asian games kicked off Friday, September 19th, in the port city of Incheon, one of the biggest cities in South Korea. The 17th Asian games in Incheon is the first “Perfect Game” that all of the members in OCA(Olympic Council of Asia), which consists of 45 Asian countries, joined the Asian games. The opening ceremony tried to mark the start of one of the world’s biggest sporting events, which was themed the concept of “4.5billion people’s dream” and “One Asia” united as a family. President Park Geun Hye officially opened the 17th edition of the Asian games, after athletes from 45 countries had filled into the stadium built specifically for the Asian games. World Star Psy kicked off the Asian games with “Gangnam style” with energetic power, and 70,000 spectators and athletes joined in his horse-riding dance. The torch was carried around the stadium by a variety of Korean sports stars including Lee Seung Yeop, the baseball legend, the second best woman golfer in the world, Park In Bee and the former speed skater, Lee Gyu Hyuk. Finally Lee Young Ae, the big star of “Dae Jang Geum”, a drama which led the Korean Wave (한류), lit the Games’ ceremonial flame, helped by two children. There were many performances

The 17th Asian Games was held from September 19th to Octobor 4th. 45 countries and about 13,000 athletes joined this festival. The 17th Asian Games consists of the full Olympic programme and some traditional Asian games like wushu and kabaddi, making a packed schedule of 36 sports and offering 439 gold medals. South Korea, which is expected to be in the second place for this festival, got 199 gold medals and overall 416 medals in the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010, next to China which won nearly 1,200 gold medals. The Korean squad is made up of 1,068 members including 830 athletes, even bigger than during the most recent Asian games, which included 1,010 members.

from soprano Jo Sumi, Chinese concert pianist Lang Lang, K-pop boy band Exo, JYJ, honorary ambassador of the Incheon Asian Games, and World star, Psy. There were also many celebrities in Korea, including Jang dong gun, Hyun Bin, Kim Su hyun, Um Hong gil, Go eun, etc. Unfortunately, the opening ceremony failed to draw a capacity crowd, as hundreds of seats were still empty at the start of the ceremony.

Lee Seung Woo Syndrome Second Messi or Second Bojan by Lee Sangbin

2014 The Daeil Press _ Sports

The AFC U-16 Championship came to an end, with North Korea winning the competition. However, the hottest topic is not the victory of North Korea. It is the fantastic performance of Lee Seung Woo who belongs to Barcelona Juvenile A. He showed an outstanding running ability, accurate finishing, and a nice assisting skill. It was a good showcase for Lee Seung Woo and now soccer fans can watch his playing on TV which in the past could be only watched on Youtube. He is very talented, but he might fail as a soccer player someday. Nowadays, even the most skillful players fail at times. Bojan Krkic is one of those players, the striker of Stoke City. When he played at Barcelona youth club, he scored about 900 goals. At that time, the Barcelona coaches said that Bojan had a better talent than Messi. However, he couldn’t get a chance at the A team because of Messi, Henry, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Although he was still young, he always felt anxious that he wouldn’t be able to satisfy people’s expectations, which forced him to move clubs many times. This is a common case in which a player ruins his career. In other words, impatience is the biggest problem for a young player. Therefore, Lee Seung Woo has to wait with patience if he wants to get a chance at the A team. He has to believe in his talent and his future and shouldn’t feel anxious. There is one more thing Lee Seung Woo has to watch out for. It is injury. Many players fail to develop their talent because of injuries. Injuries are always dangerous, but injury at a period of growth is especially dangerous. Moreover, recovering from injury is also very important. If one fails to recover from an injury, it can make him or her suffer from a chronic injury like Arjen Robben or Frank Libery. Lee Seung Woo is very weak physically, so he has to be more careful. The last important thing that Lee Seung Woo should care about is his effort. After 4 years, at the 2018 Russian World Cup, he will show the talent of Korea. He is not a Second Messi. He is the first and only ‘Lee Seung Woo’.

5 Ways To Control Anger by Shin Juwon

2014 The Daeil Press _ Life

“The meeting was so frustrating that I almost burst out of the room!” Just by listening to your friend’s conversation, you will notice that anger is not an unusual feeling. In our daily lives, anger and rage often trigger aggression, which often leads to big and small collisions. Recently, the rate of murder, assault, and such crimes has been increasing, and this is due to the impulsive feeling, anger. In this case, learning how to control anger is essential for people of the present day. Here are the 5 ways to control one’s anger;

5 Ways To Control Anger

2014 The Daeil Press _ Life

1. Count Numbers. Anger is mostly caused by an insult, comparison with others, or ignorance. In these cases, anger is a normal reaction and does not make any problem. But if it is unable to be controlled, this becomes a different story. If the feeling of rage gushes forth, try counting numbers. The point is, you have to breath slowly. This will help calm you down because it takes a few minutes to do this. And finally when you are in a state of relaxation, think about the problem that made you angry. Only after your anger is appeased are you able to think clearly and reasonably about the matter.

2. Change the way you react to anger There are so many people who act just the way they feel. However, one should be able to control his or her feelings, since they are not alone. We are living in a world where we communicate with others every day, and acting the way you feel will bring about disagreement and sometimes even a split between you and others. Therefore, expressing your anger to others or trying to solve it by yourself is not a recommended solution. Instead, change the way you react to anger, such as yoga, exercise, or just simply taking a deep breath. Physical exercise emits energy that arouses positive feelings. When you exercise, one of the hormones in your brain called endorphin will be released, which will give you mental comfort. Although you need practice and training for a long time, you will be much better off. Things like yoga and exercise will allow you to consider the problem with a philosophical eye.

3. Express your Dissatisfaction Specifically When expressing dissatisfaction to others, complaining in a negative tone will not help. Instead, try showing respect to the other person, and speak specifically. Let’s take an easy

17

case for an example; if you don’t like your sister eating your cookies that you bought, you could say, “Stop eating my cookies. I bought them, and I don’t want others to eat them.” Then, your sister would understand your feelings. However, if you just show your anger without any explanation, there is no way for her to understand you. Criticizing others thoughtlessly will bring about a worse result.

4. Think before you speak It is easy to regret what you say when you are filled with anger. In this case, thinking will be a great help since thinking helps organize thoughts. Thinking before you speak can be the hardest thing for you, but it is a way to avoid numerous angry situations in life.

5. Escape! If you can’t control your anger, even with the top 4 methods, just escape from the seat, and take a step back from the situation. This is much better than saying what you will regret. However, make it clear when you are leaving, because if you leave without saying anything, the situation might get worse. Then, after you escape, call for help. If you are unable to suppress your anger or don’t know the proper way of expressing it, getting help from experts will be great. Don’t think it embarrassing to have medical treatment. It is much better than failing at controlling yourself.

failed to duplicate the strength of Hollywood creations.

“Let It Go,” the most popular song from the movie’s sound track, has been the most downloaded tune on popular music charts such as Melon and Mnet in the last two months.

Since its Jan. 16 domestic release, “Frozen” has sold more than 9 million tickets at theaters and is already the secondhighest grossing foreign film ever, following the 2009 James Cameron hit, “Avatar,” which reached an audience mark of 13 million.

YouTube is overflowing with clips of Korean singers butchering “Let It Go” at their studios or television singing contests. Selling 43,000 copies and counting, the movie’s original soundtrack is a rare sign of life in an increasingly dead CD market.

“When done well, music movies are commercially explosive because you are targeting audiences which are emotionally engaged. An audience is already stimulated by the movie and can relive the emotions of the music,” said film critic Park Woo-sung.

It feels like a repeat of the “Les Miserables” phenomenon of early 2013 when the movie was setting impressive audience numbers, selling music and even books.

“Music is the strongest medium of conveying emotion and ‘Frozen’ is a brilliant movie that fully exploited its impact.”

The country’s markets in film and music have been dominated by domestic products in recent years — a result of both a thriving entertainment industry and a small number of conglomerates flexing their muscle in both the production and distribution sides of the business. But music movies are one of the few genres where Korean works have

While the popularity of a movie can boost consumption of soundtracks, songs such as “Let It Go” and “Can You Hear the People Sing” of “Les Miserables” often acquire the strength to transcend the popularity of the movie itself. Among Korean works, the romantic comedy “200 Pounds Beauty” (2006), remembered mostly for its title song,

“Maria,” a cover of a Blondie song that was belted out by actress Kim Ah-joong, represents the best example of a film carried by the power of its music. The 2011 retro-drama “Sunny” (2011) was credited for reviving the popularity of the 1970s German vocal group, Boney M. “A successful music movie requires a lot of skill and creativity, because you need to be competitive with every element,” Park said. “The film itself has to be good, with a strong plot, great scenes and good acting. The music will then have the opportunity to maximize the effect.” Idina Menzel, the American singer who recorded “Let It Go,” could expect to sell out a few concerts here if she comes. The song managed to stay on top of the Melon list from Jan. 27 until Feb. 9, a streak the company says was the longest ever for a foreign-language song since it started doing business. The song has also stayed atop the Mnet chart for two consecutive weeks. A Korean version of the original soundtrack of “Frozen” will also be released on Monday. The Korean-dubbed version of the OST contains 33 songs including “Let It Go,” “For The First Time In Forever” and “Love Is An Open Door” sung by Korean singers.

How about Romance Movie Tonight? Begin again - Can a Song Save Your Life?

19

by Park Sungbeen

Directed by John Carney, and starring Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, and Adam Levine starring, “Begin again” is a soul-stirring romantic comedy that portrays the moment when a hurt soul meets wonderful music. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) start their new life in New York, but as his fame gets bigger and

bigger, it makes Dave stray. Gretta, abandoned by Dave, leaves for her own life. But her life gets better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), an alcoholic and failed record-label executive, finds her talent while Gretta performs her new song on a stage. From this accidental encounter, Dan and Gretta set to record an album about summer in New York City. They recorded their album successfully, and it became an enormous hit.

This movie, however, can be a bit boring for some people. Actually, the setting is like an old movie’s plot. A talented, but unpopular singer meets a failed record-label executive and makes a huge success. You might find this movie a bit coarse. However, this movie covers its weak storyline with comedy and fantastic music. Steve (James Corden), Gretta’s friend, acts as a comedian. His witty lines make all the audience laugh throughout the whole 104 minutes of this movie. The sound tracks in this movie, ‘Lost Stars’, ‘Like a fool’, ‘Tell me if you wanna go home’, made this movie far more fabulous. Not only Adam Levine, but also Kiera Knightley is good at singing. When their songs start, it changes the mood of the movie. Because of this reason, you must see this movie in the theater. During the running time, your ears will be dazzled. Want to be in a romantic mood? Rush to the theater and watch this movie. Soon, you will be full of emotion.

2014 The Daeil Press _ Movie review

First of all, the movie’s casting is wonderful. Keira Knightley, who is famous for her beautiful smile in “Love Actually”, and “Pirates Of The Caribbean” series, did her work beautifully in this movie. Mark Ruffalo, famous for “Avengers,” also acted well. And most of all, Adam Levine, the lead singer of a popular band “Maroon 5”, acted his sentimental role as Dave perfectly, surprising everybody because it was his first time acting.
