Tell us about the idea behind this project?

The whole idea behind the project was to free myself. I contradict myself, but I feel like it always makes sense. Even though most people know me as a plus size model or song writer, my whole life Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been a singer. A rock singer, I grew up on rock n roll. Then my freshman year of high school I had a life change, started hanging out with people that introduced me to rap and we hung out in the ghetto on the weekends (we never really fit into the white suburbs thing around us) and found myself in different scenes rapping at parties and cyphers on the weekends. I would battle grown men at 14 and win the battles. Through life Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve really developed though and found myself to be almost living two lives.

What are the key differences between Hayley and Paradox?

Hayley: I’m a Plus Size Model, Singer, Songwriter, Actress, Entrepreneur. I love rock n roll, learning to play guitar which I’ve been afraid to express because of the associations, I’m a little rebel but at the same time I go to FIDM in DTLA where I study my ass off because one day I hope to own my own company that has acquired other mass companies started by myself kinda like Oprah and I’ve already started my first company launching in about a year and a half, but its super secret right now! So I’m rock n roll and sexy business which I hope to express WAY more this year. Paradox: I’m a Rapper, Plus Size Model, Writer, Vocalist, Healer, Trapper, and Visionary. I’m much more expressive, aggressive, party hard, but chill as fuck then Hayley would ever be, I wanted to make sure Paradox was someone I could be more candid with about my more inner personal thoughts and also show my art, I love to paint and write shorties and poems which I want to make a blog for. The one thing Hayley and I have in common is we both want to change the world, just through various things in various ways. Paradox will explain the whole other part of my life people always shamed me for that I feel made me stronger and hustler.

Why do you feel like it is important to have the distinction between the Hayley and Paradox?

I wanted to make sure people took Hayley seriously because Paradox is such a contradiction so some might see Paradox as “unprofessional” in the business world. I wanted to be able to express all my art in my soul without being judged unfairly made me stronger and hustler.

Who are some of your influencers?

Hayley: Kelly Cutrone, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Courtney Love, Angelina Jolie, The Runaways, Florence + The Machine, The Wavves, Amy Winehouse, The Black Keys, The Pretty Reckless, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Gwen Stefani, and Christina Aguilera. What are some of the challenges you foresee happening for you with Paradox and how do you see yourself handling it?

I think my biggest challenge is going to be trying to fulfill all my purposes inside myself through two people (spreading myself too thin), but I’m up for the challenge with great team helping me that I’m currently building and growing as well as organization. I believe the universe will put me in the right places at the right time whether it be Paradox or Hayley.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years and Paradox?

Hayley: In the next 10 years I will be 30 and I will have been on a world tour, recorded at least a couple albums, win an Oscar and a Grammy, be in a few movies, bn on the radio, etc.. I plan to have launched a few of my own brands and my corporation. As well as start my own charity giving back to domestic violence victims and just giving back in general. I could go on for days, I don’t think ill ever stop working and having new goals, that goes for Paradox too. Paradox: I plan to have recorded a handful of mixtapes, a few albums, been on a world tour, be in high fashion catalogs, start my own art gallery for myself and other artists. And help spreading healing and positive awareness.

Skorch ¿Cuándo descubriste que tenías talento para el canto?

Desde pequeña incluso mi mama cuenta q no hablaba bien pero cantaba –responde entre risas-

¿Te han frenado por tu peso para seguir adelante?

No directamente me lo han dicho, ¡pero si me lo han hecho sentir! ya sabes con esas miradas discriminatorias y palabras disfrazadas de humor cruel con comentarios como “se va a caer el escenario” chistes crueles, etc.

¿Cuál crees que ha sido tu mayor obstáculo y tu mayor fortaleza para tu carrera artística y tu vida personal? Mi mayor obstáculo ha sido que rompo con los paradigmas de los estereotipos de artistas que ya la industria posee y a los que todos están acostumbrados y tienen en su chip mental. Es difícil cambiar la manera de pensar de la gente cuando todo lo tienen por sentado y por costumbre -en el Derecho la costumbre se vuelve ley- y así pasa en la vida también, así que ese es mi mayor obstáculo. Mi mayor fortaleza es la fe, siempre he tenido una inmensa fe en mi talento, este talento que Dios me otorgó eso me ha servido siempre tanto en mi carrera artística como en mi vida personal.

Cuéntame de tu producción musical. ¿Cuántas canciones son, quien las compone?

Son 11 canciones son una fusión entre balada y rock ¡un reggae incluso! sus composiciones varían, hay algunas que son mías, otras de mi mama y otras del productor musical y el vocal coach. Este proceso fue realmente divertido, duró aproximadamente 1 año y medio porque me enfermé y duré 6 meses de reposo de voz y cuando volví al trote la voz había madurado muchísimo, así que tuvimos que volver a grabar lo que ya se había hecho, pero quedé muy conforme en ese momento. Ahora hay algunas cosas que me gustaría mejorar –responde entre risas-

¿Qué planes tienes en lo profesional para el 2016?

Tengo muchos planes para el 2016, pienso iniciar una gira de medios en la radio. Cabe destacar que aquí en mi estado fueron muy receptivos la primera vez que acudí a ellos, pero en otros estados es bastante difícil más no imposible. Utilizo las redes sociales para difundir lo que hago e intentar llegar a los canales de televisión, de hecho ya he tratado de contactarme con algunos.

¿Qué opinas de la obsesión que tienen los medios con colegas tuyas como Adele con el tema del peso?

Los medios de comunicación son muy discriminativos, ellos le han hecho pensar al mundo que una excelente voz tiene que tener un cuerpo perfecto y esta chica Adele vaya que rompió con ese tabú ya que cuando se dio a conocer al mundo tenía bastante peso más del que posee ahora y arrasó con muchos premios arrebatando le la corona a todas esas chicas que cumplen con los requisitos que los medios han impuesto. Supongo que eso ocasionó un malestar terrible en los medios. Ella les cambió

Si te toca describir el género musical con el cual trabajas, ¿Cuál sería?

Trabajo con la balada rock y lo describiría en dos palabras: amor explosivo. Amor porque soy muy romántica. Mis canciones, la mayoría, tienen su base en historias de amor en todos los niveles. Explosivo por que tienen ese toque de agresividad por así decirlo en algunas partes de las melodías entonces es esa fusión perfecta en lo que son las relaciones de los seres humanos amor con toque explosivo balada-rock.

De tu cuerpo ¿Qué te produce más orgullo o te hace sentir más bonita?

THE PERFECT FORMULA FOR PLUS SIZE DRESSING WITH STYLIST MALIA ANDERSON, BY CAMILLE SCHMIDT author

Malia Anderson was born in San Francisco, California. Born into humble beginnings, Malia was raised by her maternal grandmother, a small business owner in San Francisco’s rough Bay View district. Anderson, influenced by her grandmother’s entrepreneurial spirit, aspired to one day own her own business. In her twenties, Anderson was working as a plus-size model when she unexpectedly found her lifelong career. “Women kept coming up to me and asking me where I got my clothes” says Malia. “I had no idea it was so difficult and frustrating for people to find fashionable clothes”. As a nearly 6ft tall plus-size woman, Malia surprisingly had never had an issue finding trendsetting clothes. Anderson realized she had found her true calling, styling. Malia’s business, Style by Malia, aims to dress and create outfits for all women, shapes and size. Style by Malia works with clients to not only alter their wardrobe, but to inspire confidence, self-love, life-changing transformations. “I work with clients so they can see themselves how the world sees them” Anderson says, sipping her Starbucks coffee. “We all have an image in our mind of what we look like, and 90% of that image is flaws. If everything we see is negative, you can’t see how the world perceives you, as a whole person”

39 Malia reminds her plus-size clients that outfits must be figure flattering. “Many plus size women often forget to buy clothes that fit them” Malia says with her effervescent smile “I’ve seen clients try to hide their rolls by buying clothes too big for them.” Malia reminds her clients that by hiding themselves in over-sized boxy clothes, they actually appear larger. “When you hide your shape, you signal to the world that you are also trying to hide yourself” she says. “It’s important for my clients to truly see how beautiful they are.” Malia recommends fit and flare dress styles for all clients. In the winter, she recommends longer belted coats and fitted trousers.

Many plus size women resort to black to look smaller. Anderson believes in color. “When women wear black, they also look sad, angry and standoffish” she says, clutching her green Kate Spade bag. “I feel for many women, black has become a uniform. How can people notice you, if you’re fading into the background?” Malia recommends a “pop of color” with every outfit. “Color draws eyes to you, it also makes you look more approachable, confident and happy.” Malia loves to accessorize her own looks with her collection of colorful Kate Spade handbags and shoes. Anderson also recommends chunky statement necklaces.

Malia works with clients to determine what is work, event, and age appropriate. “My rules are really simple for dressing appropriately for work. Look around. What is your boss wearing? And what is your boss’ boss wearing? That will give you an idea of what is appropriate for that specific office and then you can style yourself accordingly.” Malia recommends falling into the style of the work place “I have seen people passed over for jobs simply based on how their appearance is perceived. Dressing appropriately at work and doing the best job you can are what will help get you noticed.”

CLEAN HOUSE

Anderson believes that purging your closet is both good for your mind and wardrobe. When deciding what to keep and throw away, ask yourself “How does this item of clothing makes me feel?”. If it does not make you happy, sexy or confident, it is time to let it go. If something is a favorite but is just worn out then start the hunt for its replacement.” Malia has one last rule “NEVER keep clothes in your closet that you hate because they cost a lot of money. All you are doing is reminding yourself of money poorly spent.” When purging your closet, Malia recommends a couple of options to get

a better bang for your buck. For those financially motivated by their closet purge, Malia recommends selling your items on Poshmark. If you’re in the Los Angeles Area, she recommends looking into The Plus Bus. For those charitably minded, consider donating work clothes to Dress for Success.

Malia Anderson has helped hundreds of women transform their lives with her personal styling approach. One customer in particular Letitia Hanke, owner of ARS Roofing and Gutters, shares how Style by Malia transformed her. Letitia says “I spent most of my entire life feeling insecure about myself. Whether it was my nappy hair, my flabby arms, my rolls or even at times my race as an African American, I never felt comfortable in my own skin.” A couple of years ago, she made a decision to meet with Malia Anderson who she says “changed her life”. Skorch hank you for hanging with Skorch! We are absolutely obsessed with these photos you did with our fav Nichole Alex.

What was the inspiration behind the shoot?

To be honest, it was all Nichole. We had worked together a few times before and we really hit it off. She reached out to me with the concept and I knew that the final product would be amazing because she is an amazing photographer and her and I had a sort of chemistry that makes both of our jobs easy.

How did you get started in modeling?

As a child I’d always dreamt of being a model or an actress, but the older I got the more those dreams seemed impossible. I played soccer my entire life, I had big strong thighs and my body was ever changing in a direction that didn’t fit into the typical Hollywood standards. Meanwhile my little sister signed with an agency and was off to New York. Years later she landed a spot in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition and she asked me to go to the launch party with her. She had been telling me for a couple years that I should be a plus size model, but I didn’t understand what “plus size” was and was lacking the confidence at the time. But this particular Sports Illustrated magazine also featured Crystal Renn and the moment she suggested to my sister that I should be a model I was convinced that this was something I had to try or I’d forever regret the unknown. From here I did my first test and met with agencies and signed with Ford Models before changing to Natural Models LA and signing with my two other agencies.

What is your daily routine like?

I wish I could say that I have a routine! But honestly my schedule is different every week and I usually only know what’s in store for me a week in advance. Even then, castings and jobs constantly get added last minute. I

have to really stay organized and on top of my emails, dates, travel information and text messages to make sure I don’t miss a thing!

Have you got to travel anywhere fun as a perk of modeling?

As for perks, honestly most of the time the travel is exhausting. I’ll fly out the day before a shoot, land at night and go straight to a hotel. Wake up and go straight to the studio and from the studio it’s straight back to the airport. That’s most of the time, but I am actually sitting in the airport as I write you for a job in the Bahamas!! This is definitely the most exciting location and trip thus far. I will have a little free time after I land and do a fitting and I’ll also have a few hours in the morning before I head to the airport. I am really looking forward to just sitting on the beach and watching the sun go down!!

I am sure you get asked this a million times by your followers about how you get started in plus size modeling...what is your stock answer?

You know I do get asked a lot for suggestions and my opinion if I think they’ll do well. And I struggle with this because I don’t feel that I know that side of the business well enough to give an opinion but I always suggest that girls go to the open calls at the agencies if they have it. You can also submit online, but I think an in person meeting gives girls a better chance so the agency can see the personality behind the pretty face. Modeling is definitely harder than I thought it would be, I think we all expect it to be easy and glamorous and in all fairness, sometimes it is. But there some jobs that you are in heels for 9 hours, the only time you get to sit down is when there is a shoe change and you are changing your clothes 50-100 times in a day. It can be exhausting, painful and sometimes no glam at all (when the company chops off the model’s head in photos)

Do you face any pressure to keep a certain size?

My agencies really don’t pressure me to be any particular size, they will

support me in my decision if I were larger or smaller. Really they want me to be happy and healthy, but there is definitely a sweet spot that will get you the most amount of work. I try not to focus on that too much, because I too just want to be happy and healthy.

Who are some of your dream clients?

Dream clients...there are really so many! I really would love to collaborate with a designer that’s not really in the plus market, but also there are a ton of plus clients that I’d still like to work with as well. One thing I’d really like to see change is cosmetic companies using different sizes! They are selling a product that “fits” anyone...so why do we only see one body type?

Who are some other models that you would love to work with?

I wouldn’t say that there is one particular model that I want to work with. But I will say that getting to know the other girls on set and the crew is my favorite part of the job. I love hearing their stories and getting to meet so many amazing and interesting people.

How did French Curves begin?

I decided to create the French Curves challenge in July 2013 after a late night conversation with Danimezza about her Aussie Curves movement. Yes it’s the real story! I was totally inspired by what Danielle had created in Australia and wanted to bring together French plus bloggers.

How many bloggers are involved and are they all located in France?

We started by being 10 bloggers, and now I have more than 50 registered and not only French bloggers but also French speaking bloggers. Therefore, some lives in Canada, some other in Belgium, United States, France of course, Saudi Arabia! The exciting thing is that each one has a personal style to share with the other bloggers.

What’s involved with French Curves?

The challenge takes place the 16th of each month. I give a theme and everyone has to show their best outfit.

What’s the story behind January’s challenge?

Once you told me about travelling to Paris and having a photoshoot, I thought it would be a lot of fun for both of us to take part to this challenge as it was quite easy for us to play with the Statement necklaces !

I think we did well right ?

Is there a particular meaning behind this months ‘Statement Necklace’ challenge? Our shoot summarizes everything about my 9 years as a blogger : meeting new people, playing with clothes, collaborating with bloggers, bringing a bit of African where I was born and raised into my posts. We met in New York a few years ago, you live in Australia, we got to meet again in Paris and wearing senegalese plastrons! And now going worldwide with Skorch !! Isn’t it wonderful ?

All of these sizes deserve to be represented equally so a customer can get an accurate idea of what the garment will look like on them. I believe we are making steps towards change, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to represent a size that is not seen as frequently in the industry.

Tell me about your partner?

My boyfriend’s name is Graham Ruchti, he is originally from the east coast and is currently studying to become a Sommelier (wine professional). He is 6’5” and as handsome on the inside as he is on the outside.

How did you two meet? Skorch sat down with our cover model Jennifer Buckingham. She is gorgeous, kind, and full of life. We love having her as our cover and learning more about her and her babely boyfriend Graham. As a model and blogger what do you think this industry needs more of?

I absolutely think there needs to be more representation of larger bodies in the media in general, as well as in the modeling industry. I particularly love working with brands as a blogger because I feel like I am producing content that is real, honest, and relatable. It is the space where I get to use my opinions and voice most. As a model, I am the largest girl at the majority of the castings I am sent on, as well as one of the largest models who is currently represented. I believe that there should be models who are a size 10,12,14….etc, but I do find an inherent problem when the only models hired to represent plus size clothing being sold to plus size women, generally stop at a size 16. Of course, there are some exceptions to this, but I would like to see diversity in sizing be the norm rather than the excep-

We met in college. Funny enough, he was the first boy at my college I kissed, but we didn’t end up dating until our senior year. We had mostly the same friend group, but kept missing each other at parties and such. We eventually spent a lot of time together the summer before our final year at college, and things just sparked and organically took off from there.

How long have you been together? We have been together for about 4 1/2 years, we will be at 5 years in August!

What is the one thing you would tell someone asking for relationship advice that works in your relationship?

My best relationship advice is to focus on communication and, within that communication, put love and respect first. It is so important that you and your partner have an open dialogue because you want to be each other’s support system. Communication is a part of trusting that your partner will be there to listen to your thoughts and feelings.

Where do you see your relationship in 10 years?

I just see us in love and together. Have you had any challenges with your relationship?

Of course, as with all relationships they take love and work. The times we struggle most are when we are individually going through hard times. Sometimes it can be difficult to not let those situations leak into any otherwise happy relationship. I think whenever those hard times come up it is so important to communicate your feelings and needs with one another.

How would you describe each of your styles and does that ever come into play with your relationship? My style is definitely eclectic but I love classic/minimalist designs for everyday wear that I make my own by adding layering pieces and statement accessories. Graham’s style is laid back, he looks killer in a t-shirt/button up and well fitted jeans, but man can he rock a suit like none other. I know my style definitely comes into the relationship! We’ve definitely talked about taking the next step in our commitment towards one another, so I believe that will be in the cards. I also would love to own a house with him and find a city we are both in love with to settle down and really make a home. Above all things I just see us in love and together. Wherever we end up I just want to end up there with him. I feel very lucky to have found this type of unconditional love, and admire Graham greatly as a person who contributes such a source of love and joy to my life.

I’m Rachel- I’m 33 and I’m the owner and artistic director of Re/Dress. Dane is 37 and is a graphic and UX designer for a software company. How did you two meet?

We met how everyone meets- on the internet!

How would you describe each of your styles and does that ever come into play with your relationship?

How long have you been together? A year and a half.

Have you had any challenges with your relationship?

When we first started dating, Dane lived in Pittsburgh, which is about a 2 and a half hour drive from me. While that isn’t super far, sometimes it was hard to be apart. Because Re/Dress has a brick and mortar store in Cleveland, it was hard for me to leave, and I work about 50 hours a week. You have to be really good about communication to make long distance stuff work, and Dane had to be really understanding that I often didn’t have weekends free because my butt would have to be at the store. We got through it though, and she moved to Cleveland about three months ago.

Dane is a really dapper, masculine, modern minimalist, and if there could be an opposite of that, I’m it. I’m super femme-y, more is more, very vintagey, put-a-bow-on-it kinda gal. Luckily we’re both pretty artsy fartsy, so that’s sort of where we meet in the middle. While she likes to keep our house very tidy and minimalist, she will also help me redecorate and make space for the treasures I bring home. And since she’s dedicated to a tidy space, she is willing to handle the lion’s share of the cleaning and I do the things I like to do like cooking and gardening. I think we’re good at meeting in the middle.

What is the one thing you would tell someone asking for relationship advice that works in your relationship?

Never argue hungry. That is so real. If you feel like you’re irritable, have a snack, take a nap, and then consider your gripe before you go off on your partner. Most of the time you just need a moment to be reasonable. Dane and I have both learned to say “I need a minute.”

Where do you see your relationship in 10 years?

Dane and I often imagine starting a business together and moving to Puerto Rico. We both would love to be doing consulting and design from a warm beach. We’re still in the daydream stage and I think that’s really nice.

Ian is one of the most kindest, generous, authentic people I Know. He says exactly what he feels, is passionate, will do anything for the people he loves and will go above and beyond because he cares so much. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s super analytical and can come

up with solutions to a problem before most people even dive in. He loves working with his hands and is extremely creative and imaginative. Ian is receptive and anticipates my needs before I know I want them. I never question if he loves me or if he thinks I am beautiful. He finds humor in everything and loves making people laugh. I lucked out when I met him and I never expected to be married to such an amazing man.

We met on a plus size-dating site in January 2007. We both had had luck meeting people for casual dating but we were looking for something serious. We were both about a year out of toxic relationships that were not good for us, so we were being very picky and not willing to settle like we had before. Our chemistry over the phone was the best. We talked for hours and hours and decided to meet after a couple of weeks. Not the safest thing ever… but we agreed to meet at his apartment. (I am pretty scrappy, so I figured if he ended up being a creepster, I could take him LOL.) I get to his apartment and I could barely parallel park. It was so embarrassing watching him try to guide me and he was laughing the entire time. When I got out the car, he had this HUGE smile on his face and gave me the best bear hug. I knew right then that there was this magnetic force between us. We spent hours chatting in his apartment. Ifelt that things were going well and for the most part they were but apparently I was being a little snoody, aloof and cold. To be honest, my previous relationship had shaken my trust level with men and throughout that entire relationship; I felt that I had zero control. After I had time to heal and seriously date again, I made a promise to myself that I would establish myself as a tough woman right at the beginning. I had no idea that Ian was a warm, kind

How did you two meet?

man with no intention to hurt me. I should have let those walls down. We ended the night and he ended things with me in a very polite MySpace message a week later. He said that he did not think that I was the type of woman he was looking to get serious with and that I was not as sweet as I was on the phone. I remember showing my friend the message and I was so crushed. She was impressed how honest his message was. No games. Just honesty. He was a man who knew what he wanted. I had a feeling we would meet again and sure enough a month or so later he approached me to try it again. Timing was bad and unfortunately we were both still kind of seeing people (not seriously) but I was not ready to jump into something without being completely available. He understood. Cut to end of May 2007, I was still actively MySpace stalking him and saw that he had a great new haircut. I messaged him that he looked great and not a minute sooner, her responded asking me if I was single and wanting to talk. I told him that I was and we talked for hours and hours. Still a little hurt from him dumping me, my goal was to make him fall for me and then dump him. My girlfriends called my BS and laughed because they knew how hard I had it for him. I think it took one date to realize that I was completely mad for this man. And a few dates into it, when he bought and installed a window air-conditioner on the hottest day in June to make sure that my little dog and I were staying cool… I knew that I could not live without him. We were inseparable from then on.

It’s a very hard road and my heart goes out to any couple dealing with it. How long have you been together?

We have been together 9 years this year and married for 6 this coming July. It’s so cliché’ but it feels like yesterday.

Have you had any challenges with your relationship?

Like any couple, that first year can be hard because there are soooo many emotions and newness. You are getting to know a new person, there is trust to be earned, there are annoying habits to be revealed. The first year we were together, one of my best friends was also killed tragically in an awful hit-and-run accident. We were just

coming up on our year together and it could have broken us but it made us so strong. He was my rock. I don’t know what I would have done without him because I was a total mess for a long time. My dad asked him the night after the incident, to take care of me. He promised my father that he would and he continues to be my strength for every challenge I meet. We have also struggled in the last few years with some fertility issues. We want to be parents so badly and not being able to get pregnant really takes a lot out of a couple. You mourn every month for the little possibility that you may be growing a little piece of both of you in your womb. It’s a very hard road and my heart goes out to any couple dealing with it. We remain very positive though and have an amazing support system with our families and friends. We know that it will happen. We know that we are going to be wonderful parents one day to a human baby… but for now we will continue being totally in love with our fur-babies. Love is love right?

what is the one thing you would tell someone asking for relationship advice that works in your relationship?

Don’t go into a serious relationship thinking that you won’t have to compromise. That is a very selfish mindset. You absolutely have to compromise and that is ok. When you merge two functioning, healthy adults into a relationship, you have to go with what works best for the couple if you both want the relationship to work. Also, don’t spend too much time being mad at small things and annoyances. Whenever I get annoyed at Ian for something dumb, I remember that he has to deal with my mountain of annoying qualities. You have to laugh them off and move on. It’s just not worth the energy.

Where would do you see your relationship in 10 years?

In 10 years, Ian and I will be parents to 2-4 children (our own or adopted), multiple pets and balancing ballet, karate, guitar lessons or whatever else are kids are into for extra-curricular activities. We will be spending time camping up in the mountains, teaching our kids about nature. We will be healthy, happy and thankful for the struggles that got us here. We will be doing our best to raise humble, happy, helpful children who strive to put character before anything else and who respect living creatures and other human beings. I want our children to be independent and feel that mistakes are ok to make. I want them to know that they have a mom and dad who would move mountains for them but that they have to learn how to fish for themselves too because nothing in this life is guaranteed and you have to create your own life.

My style is a mix of eclectic pieces, vintage inspired, BOHO-Goth and a lot of black. I wish that I could dress like Stevie Nicks meets Mrs. Roper every day! I have also always considered myself very “Earth Mama” and Ian has a thing for curvy hippie chicks, so it’s a win for him. Ian’s style is very casual, masculine with a hint of pop-culture/ geek-chic. I LOVE that he loves Sci-Fi and I love all of his Sci-Fi inspired tees. He has a healthy collection of flannels (which I always steal) and loves to dress like a man with shit to do. He also cleans up nicely and loves to get fancy in a suit. It really does not come in to play in our relationship EXCEPT that I work in Fashion Marketing and love posting my outfits on IG (@Nicole_bette) so Ian is the perfect Instagram husband… and he LOVES it!!

I would tell a couple that when there is an issue, you need to deal with it. We have had nights where we’ve slept two hours because we’ve stayed up to get to the bottom of the issue but at the end of it, we always feel like we have “level’ed up” in our relationship. LOL Lastly, it is ok if you do not have every hobby or interest in common. That individuality while being part of a couple is important to foster. I love that we both have things that we are separately passionate about and that the other can be passionate that their partner has found outlets to make themselves happy and fulfilled.

& ROBERT John and Robert are two of the sweetest boys we got to speak with. Robert is a hairstylist, makeup artist and all around fashion nut and his partner John is the cook and the comic... seriously you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t not smile when you are around him. These boys have been together for a very long time and we love hearing about their love. Tell me about you and your partner?

My partner and I, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s definitely a story to tell. We have been together for 15 years. Met in the Central Valley and the love was dynamic. Through tough and easy times our love came naturally so time had no value it was us.

How did you two meet?

Meeting John, I had moved to the Valley after being in the Bay Area. This was a change in life, and change in pace. But the Valley was where I was meant to be 15 years ago because I met the love of my life. We connected and just had that unexplainable chemistry. It was fun, sexy, and brut all at the same time, nothing to let go of.

What is the one thing you would tell someone asking for relationship advice that works in your relationship?

Relationship advice is difficult because everyone’s relationship is different and has different challenges. But what I would remind someone is that if you aren’t happy with who you are when you are with your partner, you need to run for the hills. You need to build together to be successful.

The challenges are what made us stronger. How long have you been together? We have been together for 15 years and counting.

Have you had any challenges with your relationship?

To say you make it 15 years without challenges is a lie. You conquer these test together. Although at moments you lose site of your team one of us has always been there to draw us back in. The challenges are what made us stronger.

Nichole is a plus size model and mother. She is always supportive of women in the community and one strong female. We are so happy for her love story. Check it out: Tell me about you and your partner?

Ryan is a somewhat stubborn guy but he’s connected to his sensitive side. He’s a great friend to many, and he values friendship. He likes to experiment in the kitchen; I think maybe sometimes he gets the feeling that he is appearing on an episode of chopped. Oh, and he’s a great story teller, even if he does tell you the same story multiple times.

How did you two meet?

I was living in Chicago and he was in Los Angeles at the time, I saw his first stand-up comedy video on facebook and immediately wanted to be his friend. I don’t normally send men friend requests, but he was cute and funny...so I hit send. We randomly chatted on facebook and somehow exchanged numbers. He would talk to me on my drives from Chicago to

83 Detroit. There was one day where we were on the phone probably 90% of our day. Ryan did all the right things while living 2000 miles away. He sent me a camera for Skype chats. No catfishing here. Eventually, February 11, 2010 he left sunny California to visit me in the Windy City. That kind of sealed the deal. I made one visit to California in April and knew that I wanted to be wherever he was. When my lease was up in September, I packed my life up in a Saturn Ion and moved to Los Angeles.

how long have you been together?

Even though we exchanged, “I love you’s” before we actually touched, we count our dating anniversary as February 11, 2010...his first flight out there.

So it’s been 6 years coming up! have you had any challenges with your relationship?

Absolutely! The transition from being boyfriend and girlfriend that actually lived in the same state was weird. It wasn’t easy for him to fit me into his lifestyle. We broke up in January in 2011 for about 3 months. He was dating another woman during our breakup and I pretty much gave him an ultimatum. The next day, he called me and told me that he choose me. He mentioned that something in him lead him right back to me. It still wasn’t peaches and cream after that. It took

a while, but we eventually found our way back to what brought us together, love.

How would you describe each of your styles and does that ever come into play with your relationship?

Ryan is snazzy! He is a retail manager for a company that sells suits, before that, he did custom suits in L.A. His closet is much nicer than mine. He has this crazy obsession with shoes and quirky socks. I, on the other hand, am always complaining that I have nothing to wear. I prefer to buy for our home or our son. Recently, I’ve made peace with the fact that I can’t wear my work attire everyday, so I’ve loosened up and bought myself some nicer things. I find excuses not to wear them, but he really pushes me to dress up like I used to.

What is the one thing you would tell someone asking for relationship advice that works in your relationship? Learn how to forgive, even if he doesn’t apologize. It takes a lot of energy to be angry, and yes! It is absolutely ok to be angry, but don’t let it consume you and destroy your relationship. You never want to make permanent decisions based on a temporary feelings.

where do you see your relationship in 10 years? In ten years, I hope to have another child and living in our dream home. Neither one of us is quite sure where “home” is for our family. We found Sarah on instagram and noticed how incredibly happy she was looking. Well we would certainly be happy too with a stud like Brian. Talk about a gorgeous couple! We are so thrilled for their upcoming marriage and love story! Tell me about you and your partner? I’m Sarah and he’s Brian. We live in Georgia and are probably the most boring couple ever, which we love. If we aren’t snuggling and watching Netflix, you can find us eating Ben & Jerry’s, laughing at cheesy puns or reading books aloud to one another. We are also that couple who runs and hugs each other in excitement if we

spend more than a few hours apart. Barf, I know.

How did you meet?

We first met online a few years ago and talked a little bit, but lost touch and dated other people for a couple of years. Then we reconnected through Instagram and had a few “friend dates” before falling madly in love and we haven’t looked back since.

How long have you been together? February 15th will be one year

Have you had any challenges with your relationship?

Brian is a total gym buff and working out was something that he wanted to share with me in the beginning of our relationship (mostly so we could spend more time together haha). I have had a lifelong fear of gyms and really of doing any kind of physical activity in public, thinking that people were staring or judging me for my size. I remember the first time we went to the gym

Never okay to settle for someone who doesn’t treat you like the absolute queen you are together, I had a major panic attack and could not even go inside but Brian was so supportive and helped calm me down. Over the last year, with his help, I have worked on overcoming this fear. I still have insecurities about working out in public, but he is always there by my side, never once making me feel ashamed of my size. Working out is actually something I look forward to now, mostly because of the smooches I get between sets!

How would you describe each of your styles and does that ever come into play with your relationship? He is outdoorsy and his style is what I’d call lumberjack chic –he’s bearded and wears lots of plaid and jeans, whereas I’m totally girly and love wearing dresses and getting all dolled

up. We have learned to compromise a little, though – I dress more casually on our outdoor dates (geocaching is our thing!) but we also have “real” dates where we get all dressed up for no reason.

What is the one thing you would tell someone asking for relationship advice that works in your relationship?

The most important thing that I have learned through all of this is that it is never okay to settle for someone who doesn’t treat you like the absolute queen you are. Never settle for someone who is ashamed to take you out in public or who wants to change you into someone you are not. You are worthy of that cheesy romance novel kind of love that makes everyone else want to vomit. Your perfect life buddy is out there, I promise!

Where do you see your relationship in ten years? I see us cozy and happy with a little one or two running around. I see laughter and love and finger paint on walls and loud banging coming from the drum set Brian is using to teach the little ones how to play. :)

In addition to Kelsey Miller,@ MsKelseyMiller, the panel consisted of plus size yogi Jessamyn Stanley ,@ mynameisjessamyn, lifestyle author and blogger Jordan Young ,@thebalancedblonde, plus size lifestyle blogger Cece Olisa ,@CeCeOlisa, and plus model Tess Holliday ,@TessHolliday. No time was wasted when it came to talking about the main topic of body positivity, along with other relevant subjects. No question went unan-

swered, which made this panel such an important source of inspiration. The topic of body positivity didn’t just talk to body-related points, but also of the three core elements of self: Mind, Body, and Soul. Kelsey spoke of expectations in the media and how “Influencers” are expected to be appear/act a certain way and are taken to task when they don’t appear “perfect” to the masses. She spoke of how we are all just human, trying to express ourselves how we see fit. Tess said it best when she said: “I just love to piss people off, so I take naked selfies.” Jessamyn stated that she really doesn’t care what people think about her because she knows who she is and she is living a life where she is

doing exactly what she wants. She referenced one of Tess’s Instagram post where the caption read: “I don’t feel like a role model today.” Jessamyn said that post and caption resonated with her so much because she thinks it’s okay that we aren’t perfect and we don’t need to be perfect every day. Cece candidly shared some of her personal stories of dating as a plus size woman. She spoke of how she was always down on herself about not finding the right person. She then started writing about her dating experiences and started believing in herself. She was able to find the confidence to really learn who she is. She said, “I may not take naked selfies but after this, tonight, I might! However, my journey is mine and yes, I found a guy... a hot guy and got to know myself in the process.” Jordan disclosed a very personal story about her being a vegan and making the decision to stop being a vegan. Her blog and brand were based on being a “Blonde Vegan” and she had just started blogging full-time when she came out to the Vegan community about her choice. She was very honest when she revealed that she had decided to no longer be vegan because she had developed an eating disorder and for her, this wasn’t a healthy way of living. When Tess was asked about the diversity in campaigns for larger retailers and brands, she was reluctant to answer. She paused and then said, “Damn, I know I am going to get in trouble for this.” She then spoke of Lane Bryant and the lack of sizes and ethnicity in their recent campaigns. She stated that she understands what they’re trying to do but with such a big platform, the execution just isn’t there. Tess admitted that some of her favorite brands are Indie brands. Tess was wearing Eloquii that evening and she spoke of Eloquii’s recent extended sizes campaign which featured a model who was an African American woman size 26/28. Tess shared her favorite indie brands that she loves... Chubby Cartwheels, Ready to Stare, and SmartGlamour, to name a few. These are all companies that practice what they preach and showcase #BodyPositivity in the best way possible. All in all, this event was a hugely motivating experience. All of these ladies have a different story to tell but they all have the same mission... to spread #bodypositivity. Not only was this panel of women inspiring, but also refreshing. A huge congrats to author Kelsey Miller on a great book that every girl should have on their coffee table.

She then shared that she feels people expect her to be a certain way or live a lifestyle that she doesn’t, and there are days where it is just too much. One of the best things Kelsey shared during the panel discussion that resonated with me (and I am sure everyone in attendance) was to stop and be in the moment. Take a step back from the hectic chaos that is our day-to-day life. She told all of us that it’s okay to say no sometimes. Sometimes you are being pulled in a thousand directions and you want to please everyone, but end up burning yourself out. What good are you to anyone if you’re all burned out?

he Ember Lynn 2016/2017 collection launch party was a celebration of individuality and what it means to feel empowered. The venue, AnQi, a very trendy restaurant connected to Bloomingdales gave guests comfort and style. The energy in the room was inspiring, you could feel the excitement and confidence in the room of all shapes and sizes. Founder, Debra Aruffo was truly humble about her super chic and trendy line which was inspired by a lack of sexy versatile clothes! In the collection there were

two striped dresses and my favorite piece was the horizontal striped dress. The model was wearing the dress with red pumps and a dark fitting jacket. Like with most of the collection, you could really dress up or wear it casually, I could see myself dressing the horizontal striped dress up with a statement necklace, nude gladiator pumps, and an aqua clutch for a pop! Or dressing down for a day at the beach or even riding a bike. Overall, I had a wonderful time and I am looking forward to seeing the next season from Ember Lynn Designs!
