breweries to fine-dining steakhouses and some of the best happy hours in Northwest Colorado.

To find the perfect souvenir to commemorate your trip, we encourage you to shop locally at our family-run businesses, the Saturday Farmers’ Market or the Community Agriculture Alliance market. You’ll notice we don’t have many big-box retailers here in Steamboat, and we like it that way. Shopping for locally sourced goods is the best way to find something unique and support our local economy.

Our community works hard to preserve the beauty of the Yampa Valley so it can be enjoyed for generations to come. A Trifecta of Champions

WhenKeenan Hayes became the first rookie ever to win the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association bareback riding world championship last December, he cemented a Routt County legacy.

Keenan is a third-generation rodeo rider out of Hayden. His father, Donnie, is a retired bareback and saddle bronc rider, and his grandfather, John, was the first bareback rider in the family. His sister, Kaitlynn, has competed in barrel racing, goat tying and breakaway roping.

“A cowboy with a winning streak that outshone even the brightest stars,” reported Richard Sutherland of BitsNSpurs.org, after Keenan’s historic 90-point ride in the final event of the 2023 season.

Keenan is not the first local competitor to bring home a world championship. North Routt cowboy Chad Bedell took the world title in steer wrestling in 1996. And before him, South Routt’s J.C. Trujillo won the bareback crown in 1981. Fittingly, in the same year Keenan brought the winning buckle to Routt County, J.C. was elected to the National Rodeo Hall of Fame, the top honor a rodeo rider can achieve.

Is it something in the water that turns local rodeo competitors into world champions?

“It’s a testament to our rodeo,” says Brent Romick of the Steamboat Pro Rodeo Series. “We aspire to create an athletic environment that raises champions. We need to invest in our youth, our junior rodeos. My big goal is to raise more champions.”

This year, the Steamboat Pro Rodeo Series begins on Friday and Saturday, June 21-22. During Fourth of July week, the local rodeo hosts the National Ladies Ranch Bronco Riding Championship.

For five to six weeks this summer, the Steamboat Rodeo is including breakaway roping. In this women’s event, riders must rope a calf, but do not need to dismount and tie it. Instead, they are judged by how quickly the rope breaks free from the saddle horn.

The Steamboat Pro Rodeo is held every Friday and Saturday, June 21Aug. 24, as well as July 3-4 at the Brent Romick Rodeo Arena downtown. The fun starts at 6 p.m., with music and food. The rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. For more information visit www.steamboatprodeo.com.

A Tip of the Hat

Black ones, blue ones, straw ones: Western hats come in all sizes, colors and fabrics. The one thing they all have in common is that they are as good-lookin’ as they are practical.

Cowboy hats protect wearers from sun, wind, rain and snow. They’re durable; built to last for generations. They’re customizable – think feathers, beads, silver buckles – and they’re versatile. Routt County cowboys and cowgirls generally have at least two: one for work and one for dress.

Some folks prefer a traditional Western hat: muted colors, simple bands, classic shapes. Stetson, a name so well-known it has become synonymous with cowboy hat, is available locally at F.M. Light & Sons in downtown Steamboat Springs.

Other people want a modern hat. Steamboat Hatters, on 11th Street in Old Town, offers clients the chance to build their own hat, and it can even be done online. Or, stop by Haus of CuCu where Yampa Valley local, Margot Binetti, creates customizable

Western hats at her downtown store.

Visitors are just as likely as locals to purchase Western hats. They make great memories of a wonderful time spent in Steamboat, as well as versatile headwear that makes a statement back home.

Hats, like all things Western, have a few traditions of their own.

If you can, always hang your hat. If that’s not an option, set it upside-down on its crown to keep its good luck from running out. Don’t ever place it on a bed; that will bring on an argument. Never mess with another person’s hat – one notable exception: a man who lets a woman wear his hat is indicating his interest in her.

Hats should be removed during prayer, church, indoor weddings and funerals, the national anthem, and when meeting a woman for the first time. And be sure to tip your hat as the old school Western way of saying “howdy.”

The Spirit of This Special Place

In springtime, new life abounds in the fields surrounding Steamboat Springs. By midsummer, waist-high grasses ripple like waves in the wind of rural Routt County fields. And in fall, golden harvests are fodder for photographers, both amateur and pro.

No summer trip to Northwest Colorado would be complete without spending a day in its rural environs. The easiest way to experience this idyllic landscape is by car. Drive south or west from Steamboat and find yourself immersed in agricultural land almost immediately.

Bicycling the gravel roads and two-lane highways is another favorite option, although weekend traffic can be intense on Colorado 131 and County Road 129. Steamboat bike shops can provide suggestions for favorite routes.

Horseback rides provide the quintessential cowboy experience, and several local companies offer daily tours.

Some even offer the chance to participate in cattle drives.

For the most part, Routt County ranches are family-owned and operated. Their land may look inviting, but trespassing is not only illegal, it can also be dangerous. Bulls and great Pyrenees sheep dogs, for instance, are not all that friendly. Before you cross a fence line, make certain you have permission.

Farm equipment is notoriously slow-moving. If you see a tractor, combine or other implement moving on the road, stay back until it is safe to pass.

Cowboys also move livestock via the roadways, and sometimes an animal ventures out on its own. In any case, livestock has the right-of-way. Stop and take a few pictures from a safe distance while you wait for the road to clear.

Embrace the spirit of this special place.

Rabbit Ears Peak is a well-known summit in northwest Colorado, and is a popular day hike.

Howlin’ Good Fun

WhileHowelsen Hill might be more famously known for being Colorado’s oldest operating ski slope in the winter, the park and ice rink that sit adjacent to the world-famous ski jump provide plenty of opportunities for family fun. From mountain biking, baseball, softball and the alpine slide, there’s an abundance of activities to keep you busy all day long.

The Howelsen Ice Arena is located off Fifth Street and is home to an Olympic-sized ice rink, on-ice bumper cars, public skate sessions, stick-and-puck and drop-in hockey for all ages.

Leaving the ice arena, walk past the rodeo grounds to find the historic Olympian Hall, which can be rented out for public use and includes banquet tables, 120 chairs, a podium, projection screen and kitchen space. Also close by are baseball, volleyball, pickleball and tennis courts.

If you’re looking for a scenic trail to walk your dog, go for a hike, mountain bike or even horseback ride, Emerald Mountain, home to the Howelsen Hill ski area, has 24 miles of backcountry trails for all levels of non-motorized use (leave your e-bikes at home or you could face fines as well as scorn from locals). If you’re just in it for the views, pick up a roundtrip chairlift ticket or an uphill bike access ticket from the ticket office next to Olympic Hall.

Last, but surely not least, is “The Howler;” 2,400 feet of exhilarating fun down the face of Howelsen. This alpine slide isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s as safe as riding a bike. Purchase a ticket at the ticket office and remember, children two and under aren’t allowed; children under four feet must ride with an adult.

Ripples of Adventure

Skiing may have put Steamboat Springs on the map, but the wild Yampa River and the town’s surrounding lakes and rivers are what sets Ski Town USA® apart from other ski resorts. So blow up your innertubes, rig up your fly rods, and fire up your speedboats – it’s time to soak up the sun and get out on the water. Drive south to Stagecoach Reservoir at Stagecoach State Park. From May 1 to October 31, the reservoir is open to motorized and non-motorized boating, including sailboards, paddleboards and Jet Skis. Swimming is allowed at the swim beach near the marina and in all wakeless zones around the reservoir. If you purchase a Colorado Parks & Wildlife fishing license at the marina, spend the day catching beautiful 14-18-inch rainbow trout that occupy the area. No gear? No problem! Throughout the summer, the marina rents kayaks, canoes, pontoon boats and stand-up paddleboards on a first come, first serve basis. Camping spots are also available for a fee.

SKI & BIKE KARE

Kayaking is a springtime sport that lasts well into summer on the Yampa River.

In town, you’ll find the Yampa River, which begins in the Flat Tops Wilderness and flows west 250 miles into Dinosaur National Monument. In the summer, locals enjoy tubing, paddleboarding and kayaking from Fetcher Park to the James Brown Bridge (more locally known as C-hole). Commercial watercrafts can be rented from several locations in town and along Yampa Street. Anglers can enjoy miles of fishable water up and down the Yampa; those who don’t know the area well can hire a guide from one of the many guide services in town.

Want to get away from town and experience the rest of Routt County? Drive 45 minutes north to Steamboat Lake State Park and enjoy the views of Hahns Peak, one of Routt County’s tallest mountains. Steamboat Lake has many of the same amenities as Stagecoach Reservoir, as well as 10 cabins available for rent.

However you decide to spend your time on the water, be sure to be safe, clean up after yourself, and have fun!

Gateway to the Continental Divide Trail

The Continental Divide Trail, stretching 3,100 miles from Mexico to Canada along the Continental Divide, is the longest thru-hike in what’s known to hardcore hikers as the “Triple Crown.” It surpasses the Appalachian Trail by 1,000 miles and the Pacific Crest Trail by 500 miles. Steamboat Springs is officially designated a CDT Gateway Community, recognized for not only promoting awareness and stewardship of the trail, but also creating a welcoming environment for its hikers that pass through. If you happen to be one of the adventurous few calling the CDT home this summer, be sure to take advantage of all the amenities Steamboat has to offer. Stop by the Steamboat Springs Visitor Center to sign a guest book and receive a free Pact Lite kit to help you dispose

of your waste responsibly when you get back on trail. If your gear has seen better days and you need some upgrades or repairs, utilize Steamboat’s free bus service to get to BAP, Ski Haus or Christy Sports.

Old Town Hot Springs is a must for a good soak, shower or massage (or all three!). Located downtown, Old Town Hot Springs has been a staple of the community since it first became of use hundreds of years ago.

Don’t forget about the Yampa River, home to tubing, paddleboarding, kayaking and world-class fly fishing. Once you’ve gotten your fill of activities for the day, enjoy one of our many different restaurants and bars – from burgers to pizza to wings, town is plentiful with options.

The entertainment never ends in Steamboat Springs. After a long summer day, wind down (or rev up!) with some live music.

Strings kicks off their summer festival on Friday, June 21, with a performance by Emmylou Harris, who shook up country music in the 1970s and earned 14 Grammys, three CMA awards and four Americana Awards over the course of her career. The music continues on through Sunday, Aug. 25, with singers and bands like Melissa Etheridge, The Mavericks and Brandy Clark. Music on the Green offers free performances every Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Yampa River Botanic Park. Check the schedule and buy tickets at www.stringsmusicfestival.com.

Snow Bowl’s free Summer Music Fest returns on Saturday, May 25, with a special opening weekend called “Waking the Giant,” featuring four bands in one day, from 2-10 p.m. The series will continue every Wednesday beginning May 29 through Sept. 25, and also includes four Sunday evening shows. Steamboat Free Summer Concerts offer a family-friendly atmosphere to jam to live music. Bring a picnic blanket or chairs and arrive early to snag a spot on the lawn below Howelsen Hill. Go West, Young Woman

Ajournal written by a woman living in the Midwest inspired Heide Presse’s exhibit “We Set Our Faces Westward: One Woman’s Journey 1839-1848.”

“One reason that I chose her journal as my inspiration is because she was very descriptive in the way that she did daily things, which is one of my favorite things to paint – everyday lives,” Heide says. “So it was the perfect situation.”

The exhibit tells the story of an Oregon Trail journey through paintings, drawings and artifacts, bringing to life a story of westward migration, told uniquely through a female perspective.

“We Set Our Faces Westward” is on display downtown at Steamboat Art Museum from Saturday, May 25, through Sunday, Sept. 1. For more information, visit www.SteamboatArtMuseum.org.

Meet a Local Artist: Jewelry Maker Tibby Speare

Tibby Speare has been creating art since elementary school, but it wasn’t until college that she fell in love with jewelry making and turquoise. “That’s still my favorite stone,” she says. “All the flavors and energy around it, but mainly just the color itself sings to me.”

About 15 years ago, Tibby began creating designs, utilizing different materials and taking several classes with professional metalsmiths to hone her skills. “Part of what excites me is starting from absolute scratch,” she says. “Taking a piece of silver or gold sheet or wire and wondering what’s going to happen with it. You don’t always know. You can plan all you want, but when you get the material in your hands, it often has a life of its own.”

Local artist Tibby Speare works in her studio, handcrafting jewelry from metal, stones and gems.

Based in Steamboat Springs since 1993, “Tibbyjewelry” is available at Pine Moon Fine Art. Thanks to a connection with a gemologist, Tibby can find anything her clients ask for, creating custom pieces typically made with high quality gems, soft angles and curves, in sterling silver and 14- and 18-karat gold.

“Jewelry is so intimate; it’s on your body,” she points out. “You either want it to express something personal or you need it to feel something, like buoying or anchoring your spirit. My hope is that whatever I make will find its way to someone who wants it or needs it or loves it. If you’re drawn to a piece, that’s what you need, and that’s the magic which will facilitate what you’re seeking in your life.”

Old Town Hot Springs offers multiple soaking spots, from the naturally-heated Heart Spring to the warm waters of the heated pool or the new ice bath.

Ice and Steam

You can’t visit Steamboat Springs without going to one of the natural hot springs; after all, it’s in the city’s name.

Old Town Hot Springs recreation facility is located on Lincoln Avenue with shopping and restaurants nearby. With a spacious main hot pool and three smaller spa areas, guests can choose the perfect temperature to cure achiness and stress. Dip into the Heart Spring, which is hundreds of years old. Here, guests need to be over 18 to enjoy the steam from the 102-degree mineral-rich water.

Too hot? Adults can use OTHS’ new ice bath, dubbed “The Icebox.” Its benefits are similar to the concept of a hot spring, as the chilly 55-degree water is intended to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and stimulate muscle recovery. Head out the door to the pools and turn left: the ice bath is located outdoors alongside the larger hot pool. It is vital to focus on controlled breathing when entering the cold, and users are encouraged to build their endurance to longer, more sustained periods of

submersion. Although the frigid temperatures can relieve stress and induce a state of calm, dipping longer than five minutes is not recommended. Besides mental tests and icing qualities, the ice bath can also be used for contrast therapy or moving from opposite extreme temperatures quickly. In contrast therapy, begin with longer periods of heat and then alternate with short bursts of cold.

TOWN HOT SPRINGS

Yampa River Botanic Park morning yoga is for all, from never-evers to seasoned yogis.

Revival in the Park

Slow down and hone in on both your body and the natural environment with outdoor yoga. Yampa River Botanic Park, located off Lincoln Avenue next to the Emerald Park soccer fields, is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the outdoors. On the expansive lawn adjacent to the pond, the botanic park hosts group yoga, providing an immersive experience with nature that becomes as much internal as it is external.

Yoga sessions begin Saturday, May 25, and end Saturday, Aug. 31, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9 a.m. Sessions typically

last an hour and participants are asked to bring a yoga mat and water bottle. Remember, mornings are often brisk and the grass can be dewy; layers are encouraged. Although yoga is free, a $10 donation is suggested for yoga instructors and maintenance staff. Sessions are open to the public (any skill level is welcome), with an average number of 75 people in attendance. Instructors tend to focus on breathing and whole-body experiences: it’s a deliberate action dedicated to taking in the rhythm of your own body’s functions while also tuning in to the surroundings of a gorgeous summer morning.

Oasis at the Library

Retreat

into the calm coolness of the Bud Werner Memorial Library. Grab a book, enjoy the air conditioning and get comfortable in a plush chair by the window overlooking the Yampa River. Steamboat’s public library is located just off Lincoln Avenue on the west end of downtown, and serves as a much needed escape from the heat and chaos that summer brings. The library is open every day, from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Fridays, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on the weekends.

Got kids in tow? Bring them to one of the library’s weekly storytimes or walk through the pages of Steamboat StoryWalk. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024 will mark the 31st year of the festival. Hosted at Strings Music Pavilion, over 500 literature buffs have the opportunity to celebrate words with some of the most esteemed modern authors. The event has brought in winners of almost every major literary award. This year’s authors include Ben Fountain, Hanna Pylväinen, Laura Pritchett, Andre Dubus III and Julia Phillips. The Farmers Market takes place downtown every Sunday, from July 14-September 1, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Vendors include local businesses such as Heartlake Soap and TrueLeaf Microgreens, and live music from local talent takes place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

While you’re there, swing by Lupita’s for tacos, margaritas and (more!) live music every Sunday afternoon from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Last year, the owners built a stage to expand their entertainment and this year, bands like The Remedy, Cat Pack and Speak of the Devil will perform there.

Astroll through downtown reveals the history and development of our community and buildings dating back to the late 1800s. Town founder, James H. Crawford and a handful of settlers established the first post office, school, church, saw mill, newspaper and hotel. These early visionaries built handsome stone storefronts as a testament to the town’s potential amidst the wilderness.

1 | TREAD OF PIONEERS MUSEUM | 800 OAK ST.

Constructed by Ernest Campbell in 1901, this was home to the Zimmerman family from 1914 to 1956. In 1959, the Tread of Pioneers Museum opened in this building on the corner of Fifth and Oak Streets. In 1988, the building was moved to this location. The Utterback house ● was also moved to the site in 1997 from its original location at Fourth and Oak and adjoined to the museum. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

2 | GIAMBONI HOUSE | 646 OAK ST.

Camillo Giamboni built this structure in 1888. Hidden under the siding is the original log building. This was home to Swiss brothers Henry and Camillo Giamboni, who were the first to make skis commercially in Steamboat Springs.

3 | CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH | SEVENTH & OAK ST. ● ● ●

Margaret Crawford, founding mother of Steamboat Springs, was a charter member of the town’s Christian Science Society, organized in July 1908. The log building, which continues to house the Christian Science Church, was completed in November 1934.

4 | WILLETT HOUSE | 443 OAK ST. ●

Built in 1906, this home is one of the few remaining pre-railroad vernacular wood frame structures in town. It has been owned by local noteworthy individuals such as George and Archibald Wither, Judge Charles Morning and most significantly Dr. F.E. Willett. Willett tirelessly served as the community doctor for nearly 60 years.

5 | ROUTT COUNTY COURTHOUSE | 522 LINCOLN AVE. ●

The cornerstone for the Routt County Courthouse was laid on Sept. 9, 1922. Designed by noted Colorado architect Robert Fuller, the three-story building was completed in December 1923 at a cost of $122,000.

6 | THE OLD TOWN PUB | 600 LINCOLN AVE.

Built in 1904 by Ernest Campbell, this structure was originally the U.S. Post Office, followed by the Royal and Albany Hotels. From

Downtown Steamboat Springs is a National Historic District.

1914 to 1921, the building was a hospital run by Dr. F.E. Willett. After the hospital relocated, the second floor became the popular Odd Fellows dance hall. The first floor served as a grocery, electric store and public libray from 1924 to 1967.

7 | PIONEER BUILDING | 700 BLOCK OF LINCOLN AVE. ●

The Pioneer Buidling served as a hotel from 1923 until 1979. In its heyday, the upstairs rooms were run as a classic Western boarding house and the downstairs housed the colorful Pioneer Bar.

8 | FIRST NATIONAL BANK/REHDER BUILDING | EIGHTH & LINCOLN AVE. (STEAMBOAT ART MUSEUM) ● ● ●

The First National Bank of Steamboat Springs, chartered in 1902, occupied a small frame structure on this site until the present building was constructed in 1905. Dakota sandstone from the Emerald Mountain quarry, and handmade bricks from Trogler’s local brickyard were used in the construction.

9 | CHIEF THEATER | 813 LINCOLN AVE. ●

The Chief Theater was constructed by local master builder Arthur Gumprecht in 1926 and owned by Harry Gordon. The large, singlestory brick masonry building included an orchestra pit, stage and the capacity to seat 500 people, making it the largest theater in Northwest Colorado.

10 | HOWELSEN HILL | SEEN FROM NINTH AND LINCOLN AVE. ● ● ●

Rising up steeply from the south side of the Yampa River, this section of Emerald Mountain is named for Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelsen, the “Flying Norseman” of Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. Howelsen arrived in Steamboat Springs in 1913 and introduced the townspeople to ski jumping and recreational skiing. By the 1930s, Howelsen Hill facilities included slalom and downhill courses, lights for night skiing, and a “boat tow” consisting of two sleds pulled up the mountain by a cable powered by a Model T engine and transmission. In 1947, a combination chair/T-bar lift was installed to the top of Emerald Mountain; it was one of the longest

lifts in the U.S. at that time. For over a century, the ski hill has served as the home for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, a nationally known training program.

11 | HARWIG’S SADDLERY | 911 LINCOLN AVE. (HARWIG’S & L’APOGÉE)

Built in 1901, this was originally a meat market. In 1916 it became Harwig’s Saddlery and Western Wear, which was run by the Harwig family until 1984. The historic cowboy sign over the storefront was painted in the 1950s or 1960s by noted Western artist Merrill Mahaffey. The cowboy is now on display inside, safe from the elements, in the restaurant’s vestibule where he welcomes restaurant patrons.

12 | THE OLD PILOT BUILDING | 1009 LINCOLN AVE.

James Hoyle began Northwest Colorado’s first newspaper, The Steamboat Pilot, on July 31, 1885. This brick and stone building was constructed in the fall of 1909 for the newspaper printing office, which occupied the building until 1999.

13 | STEAMBOAT LAUNDRY BUILDING | 11TH AND OAK ST. (THE LAUNDRY RESTAURANT & CREEKSIDE CAFÉ) ● ●

Built over a 13-year period starting in 1906, this two-story brick and river-rock structure was constructed for the Steamboat Laundry, Dry Cleaning and Pressing business, which it served as until the late 1970s.

18 | F.M. LIGHT & SONS | 830 LINCOLN AVE.

The F.M. Light family moved from Hicksville, Ohio to Steamboat in 1905. Soon after their arrival, they purchased the lot, erected the building and secured enough merchandise to open this clothing store. Light family members traveled throughout Northwest Colorado and Southern Wyoming displaying their merchandise and taking orders from ranchers for Western wear, hats, boots, saddles and equipment. The retail store is still owned by family members.

14 | CARVER POWER PLANT | TENTH STREET BETWEEN LINCOLN AVE. AND OAK ST. (CENTENNIAL HALL) ● ●

Originally built as a wood building in 1901, this coal-fired power plant made Steamboat Springs the first town in Northwest Colorado to provide its residents with electricity. The steam, a by-product of the system used to create electricity, was used to heat nearby schools and residences. The building continued to serve as a power plant until the 1950s. In the late 1990s, the City of Steamboat Springs purchased and rehabilitated the structure for public use as the historic portion of Centennial Hall.

15 | LORENZ BUILDING | 928 LINCOLN AVE.

This brick building was built in 1903. In 1912, it became the courthouse when the county seat relocated from Hahn’s Peak. After 1921, the courtroom occupied the second floor, while the clerk, treasurer and jail shared the ground floor. When the present-day courthouse was completed in 1923, the building became the site of a dance hall called the Social Benefit Association.

16 | HUGUS BUILDING/THIESEN MALL | 912 LINCOLN AVE. (STEAMBOAT SMOKEHOUSE)

Built in 1899, this was the site of J.W. Hugus & Co., one of the nation’s first general store chains. The original brick storefront is hidden under the contemporary façade.

17 | MAXWELL/SQUIRE BUILDING | 840 LINCOLN AVE. (LYON DRUG STORE) ● ●

Construction of the building was financed by town investor, J.P. Maxwell. The building was constructed with local pressed brick from Trogler’s brickyard, and completed with local stone trim and plate glass. From 1909 to 1962, the post office occupied the ground floor. In 1909, Chamberlain-Grey Drug Store took over ownership. Now, over 100 years later, the building is still home to a locally owned drug store/pharmacy.

19 | THE FURLONG BUILDING | 810 LINCOLN AVE. (BUSHWACKER’S)

This building was started in 1919 and finished in July of 1920 using stone from the Emerald Mountain quarry to frame the windows. Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelsen completed the brickwork and masonry.

20 | THE ROUTT COUNTY NATIONAL BANK BUILDING | 802 LINCOLN AVE. (WILD HORSE GALLERY) ● ●

Built in 1919 with stonework by Carl Howelsen, this building is a unique landmark of two different periods. The Lincoln Avenue façade shows the rehabilitated 1919 exterior, and the Eighth Street side displays the changes from the 1940s.

A. AND B. CRAWFORD HOUSES | 1238 AND 1184 CRAWFORD AVE. ● ●

Crawford homes are private residences so please respect private property. The second and third houses built by the founding family of Steamboat Springs, the Crawfords, are still standing. The second home, at 1238 Crawford Ave. (on 12th Street), was built in 1886 from native lumber from the Suttle Mill. The bay window was added later to accommodate their daughter’s wedding reception. The large stone house at 1184 Crawford Ave. ● ● was built in 1894 of stone from the Emerald Mountain quarry. The family occupied this house until Mrs. Crawford’s death in 1939. Crawford’s descendants purchased the house in 2004 and carefully restored it.

C. HISTORIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUILDING | 1201 LINCOLN AVE. (YAMPA VALLEY LAND TRUST) ●

Located along Soda Creek next to the library, this small 1960 structure is one of Czechoslovakian-born architect Eugene Sternberg’s two midcentury modern “Usonian style” buildings in downtown Steamboat Springs (listed on the National Historic Register). The building’s nearly flat inverted pitch roof gives the visual impression of a butterfly in flight, so that locally, the building is known as the “Butterfly Building.”

D. THE DEPOT | 1001 13TH ST. ● ● ●

Designed by famous Denver architect Frank E. Edbrooke, the railroad Depot was fully financed by the citizens and businesses of the town in order to entice the railroad line through Steamboat Springs. Construction for the building began shortly before the first passenger train arrived on January 6, 1909 and was operational by August of that year. Passenger service was discontinued in 1968, and eventually the Depot became home to Steamboat Creates and the Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts.

1. Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return. Check in with them upon your return.

2. Weather changes rapidly in the mountains. Plan high elevation trips for the morning hours. Afternoon thunderstorms with lightning are common. The threat is most significant along ridge lines, high points and open areas. Do not seek shelter under trees.

3. Minimize your exposure to the sun.

4. Pace yourself and drink lots of water.

5. High altitude sickness symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea and weakness. Rest, proper hydration and descent to a lower elevation can alleviate symptoms.

Visit the U.S. Forest Service office at 925 Weiss Dr. in Steamboat, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., for additional camping and trails information, closures on trails and hazardous tree information. All campsites have tables and fireplace grates.

In Routt National Forest, reservations for Hahns Peak Lake, Dumont Lake, and Seedhouse Campgrounds and the Seedhouse Group Site and Guard Station may be made from six months in advance to four days before arrival. To make a reservation visit www.recreation.gov or call 877-444-6777. All other campgrounds in Routt National Forest are on a first-come, first-served basis.
