The unifying power of food always mystifies me this time of year. Whether it’s through our national obsession with pumpkin-flavored anything or showing off your signature side dish at Friendsgiving, fall is when we all become foodies. Now that the weather is driving us indoors and the sun is setting earlier, I find myself and my friends more regularly gathering for a good potluck dinner party, something that never happens when it’s hot as Hades outside and we all just want to be in the pool. When we get together for these meals, it’s fun to see our inner chefs come forth and surprise the rest of the group. It’s even more fun to stop for a second and look around the table at the joy that accompanies a simple sit-down meal, something most of us don’t get enough of. This issue of skirt!, we feature women who are big believers in food and the joy it brings. I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed sampling their wares.

Deana Tankersley | All Wrapped Up
Deana grew up thinking crepes were nothing special. Her mother was a true Francophile, obsessed with anything and all things French, and made crepes regularly. It wasn’t until Deana was an adult that she began to love the iconic wraps almost as much as her mother did. “We’re just crepe-happy,” she says. Deana opened up Wrap Em Up Crepes & Cafe on Georgia Avenue in North Augusta this September, and she’s been blown away with the community’s response. “It’s been like getting a family,” she says. “The good cousins and the cool aunts and everyone else.” Wrap Em Up started as a converted hot dog cart at the Saturday Market on the River, but after weekly regular customers kept clamoring for more, Deana and her husband James felt like opening a cafe was the perfect next step. Business has been hopping ever since, and now Deana’s already daydreaming about extended hours and live jazz. “I have to slow myself down.”

Deidra Jones | Sweet History
Each item on the Sweet Jones menu comes with a backstory from Deidra’s family, whether it’s her Uncle Theo’s sweet potato pie or her mother’s chocolate cake. Deidra founded Sweet Jones in December of last year as a way to share her family’s time-tested and beloved recipes with the rest of the world. “I’m here because of my mom, and because of all of my family.” Trained as a mechanical engineer, Deidra balances a full-time engineering job with running Sweet Jones and being a mom to her son, Zion.Through her work at big-name companies including General Motors and ClubCar, she’s learned about the importance of branding and attention to detail. “I believe in high quality ingredients, and I don’t believe in shortcuts.” All of the hustle doesn’t feel like work, she says, because she loves it so much. “I’ve always been intrigued, watching people prosper while pursuing something they love,” she says. “I want to be a household name.”

Erin Eisele | Adding to the Local Menu Erin believes the way we eat says a lot about how we live. “Food tells a story,” she says, one central to her life. She manages Charleston Cooks! in Columbia, with a kitchen classroom hosting everyone from wannabe cooks to hard-core foodies. She’s also local chapter leader for Slow Food. This Aiken native wasn’t originally planning to call Soda City home. She worked at the Smithsonian for five years, then headed to Italy and the University of Gastronomic Sciences. Back in the U.S., a visit with her sister turned into a serious commitment to Columbia when she met a guy. They married this summer. It’s been perfect timing, in more ways than one. “Columbia is at an exciting, pivotal time. Food is such a big part of development here,” says Erin. “What’s nice is that if you have an idea, you can do it—because it’s not a saturated market.”

Morihiko Nakahara helps them work in symphony.
He eats collards, follows Gamecock football, and listens to heavy metal—perhaps not what you’re expecting from the Japanese-born music director of the South Carolina Philharmonic. But Morihiko sees connections. Collards and barbecue remind him of foods he grew up with. Symphony conductors and football coaches, he says, have a lot in common. “What I have is ink on the page,” he shows us, pulling a score from his bag. “My job is to help them play together, literally together.” If you watch, Morihiko says you’ll see how he signals his players through hands, body, and baton: ”The conductor is the only person on stage who doesn’t make a sound.” He’d like to get more people to give classical music a listen. “The hardest part is getting them through these doors.
