We carry it inside of us, this thing we might call intuition, imagination, instinct, desire. We lose track of it when we’re temporarily burned out, but the spark is always there. Sometimes it takes one, sometimes two or three of us, but we all have these glimmers, brainstorms, flashes of ideas that take hold and turn into sparks. We can’t just set aside our day jobs, responsibilities, family … but that flicker, oh, that glow. We are all alike in that it takes just a fanning of the flame to set it off. We lead companies, countries, small businesses, families, organizations and movements — and each one began with a spark of desire, for a better world, for a creative life, for giving to others, for solving problems. Lean in? Try bursting into flames. These sparks you carry are a powerful force. They can give life, change lives, and make the impossible, possible. If it sounds like a crazy idea, do it anyway. Don’t let that little “can’t” voice extinguish something amazing. The worst that can happen is you fail, you learn something, and you do it better next time. Make a connection with other women who have sparks that complement your own. Two sparks can supercharge a gem of an idea into a sparkling diamond. Be around women who support your creative pursuits. Let go of the “noes.” Follow the “yeses.” Don’t ignore this electric muse. If you let it smolder and burn, your spark will lead you to your passion, your meaning, your calling, your success. It shouldn’t be a surprise when it does happen. To paraphrase Glenda the Good Witch to Dorothy when she finally reaches the Emerald Palace, “My darling, you’ve had it within you all along.” We say, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine! A LY S S A KYLE Alyssa Kyle is the owner of Alyssa's Cupcake Confections, an online cupcake business, a freelance writer, lover of the written word and a yoga teacher in training. I’m passionate about life, and am always seeking opportunities for creative inspiration and adventure.

Coloring Outside the Lines

I was raised by an artist. If there is any truth to the ageless nature versus nurture debate, then for me, I can say with confidence that I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for my mother kindling the creative spark within me that would cultivate my future. We always had an eclectic assortment of art supplies, a treasure trove of felt, beads, paint, glue and construction paper. I grew up spending many an afternoon wandering through abundant aisles of artificial flowers and fabrics at our local craft store. Our house was a holiday haven for every season and occasion, beautifully adorned with the charming creations born of my mother’s magical touch. I accompanied her to craft shows, sitting behind her table beaming with pride as eager customers purchased her enchanting holiday masterpieces — turkeys with a kaleidoscope of colorful feathers, iridescent snowmen and ethereal angels disappeared one by one from my mom’s table. Soon, my hands began to look like my mother’s, nails encrusted with glitter and fingertips speckled with paint. I remember one pivotal afternoon in elementary school when my art teacher spoke to my mom about an assignment she had given our class. She explained that her instructions were to draw a scarecrow in the center of the paper. She showed my mom the other scarecrow drawings and then showed her mine, which also included pumpkins, grass, a fence, a sky, sun and clouds. The focus of this meeting was to address my apparent inability to follow the directions by “coloring outside the lines,” as it were. My mom conveyed her surprise that a class based on creativity would focus more on structure and containment and less on encouragement of exploring individual artistic expression. She also pointed out that I did indeed follow the directions. I had just exceeded them, thus planting the seeds in me that would someday flourish into an unanticipated garden. That summer my mom organized a camp at our local cabin. My friends and I spent those carefree days of youthful bliss enjoying incredible craft projects and activities designed to inspire us to use our imaginations. We fashioned our own costumes that we wore at a sing-along pageant for our parents. A chorus of whimsical butterflies, bees and frogs serenaded our delighted audience. She was subsequently asked to write craft articles for the local paper, which I excitedly brought in for show and tell (maybe a bit show-off and tell) at school. During my teens, my mother started other businesses spun from her latest ideas. Potted plant pals that she made with artificial flowers and painted faces for patients in hospitals, nursing homes and cancer centers that she found donors for. She also made and sold “inspirational owls,” stuffed, sewn cheerful creatures that were christened with names like dream, love and courage, made in memory of my aunt who died of cancer. These special gifts brought smiles and laughter to children and comfort and cheer to adults. I continually watched my mom’s talents manifest into money which taught me that I could conceivably transform my own interests into income. I learned that my strengths were interwoven with the threads of creativity introduced, inspired and encouraged in me all my life.

After graduation, it was no surprise that I decided to tap into my inner artist. But my creative talents took me on a different path with a rather unusual artistic medium. My passion was with food, sweets in particular. This had been evident since childhood when I collected Strawberry Shortcake dolls and made play dough pastries into bountiful buffets. Plastic play desserts became real ones. I loved to bake and graduated from my Easy-Bake Oven to cookbooks quickly after realizing that perhaps there were recipes far superior to chocolate powder and water cooked by a light bulb. I began whipping up treats for my friends and family. My unique cupcake flavors went over so well that I was encouraged to sell them at the local farmers market. After they had sampled them, I was given a spot. The market manager suggested I stick to vanilla and chocolate and prepared me for low sales. I chose my favorites instead — orange Creamsicle, key lime pie, banana split and pink lemonade adorned with a cherry, umbrella and straw. Already my creative mind was inventing more. I sold out in less than an hour, with enthusiastic customers asking for my business cards, which is how my home-based cupcake business was born. Every week I would enthusiastically entice customers by having themed cupcake flavors. For example, Carnival Day featured chocolate-covered banana, cotton candy, cherry snow cone, caramel popcorn as well as Ferris wheel and clown designs. I had balloons, games and prizes. My table was a huge hit week after week! My business is now online and has blossomed from four flavors to 200, inspired by everything from traditional baked goods, ice cream flavors, popular candies, ethnic desserts and even cocktails. I began making cupcakes for birthdays, holidays, graduation parties, showers and weddings. Each cupcake is my own blank canvas, a way to express my creativity. I specialize in crazy, fun flavors and elaborate themed designs. As a mostly self-taught baker and decorator, I have instructed classes using the wealth of knowledge I obtained from a plethora of sources and years of experience. I regularly sell my cupcakes for holiday events at a nearby store and was even featured on a local TV show. I expanded to festivals and eventually decided to add an array of other goodies to offer my customers. I now include pies, cakewiches, cupcake parfaits and more, in a huge variety of flavors and designs. Influenced by my mother’s philanthropy through her artistic works, I donate a portion of my profits to two charities every year, in honor or memory of special people in my life. This year my donation will be going to a wonderful group of women who send cards and gifts regularly to people with brain tumors, in honor of my own incredible mother who was recently diagnosed with one. I’m still happily living my dream as I do what I love every day: an artist with a pastry bag instead of a paint brush. In life, I have learned that my success and happiness comes from coloring outside the lines!

What’s Next? When I was 12 years old, I had gumption. I kicked off summer vacation that year by calling a cab and waiting nervously, picking paint off the front steps, until the driver arrived. I recall the heavy odor of cigarette smoke, the way my thighs clung to the warm vinyl and my mom’s cavernous, old purse folded over in my lap like a prop — a signal to the driver an actual adult would not be sliding into the seat beside me. The cab stopped in front of a brick building, a day program for disabled children and adults. I dropped my dollar of baby-sitting earnings into the driver’s hand and marched toward my destination, easing my way into the manager’s office and offering myself as a volunteer. I vaguely recall mumbling something that I deemed inspirational about my lifelong dreams and unflinching work ethic. Thankfully, the wideeyed woman suppressed the amused grin that must have tempted her and offered me a seat (just as you would any other grown person with an enormous purse). I am certain I was not expected to be there every day when the doors opened, but I was. I had a dream, and it was driving me as reliably as the yellow cab that delivered me every morning.

It was a the kind of deceivingly simple statement that only a mom can make, the kind that stirs something in you so that the question behind it begins to root its way out and with it, a challenge. I was tempted to turn to her with wide eyes and an exaggerated smile and prove that I hadn’t dropped some part of myself like a stray sock along the way. But I nodded instead, mumbling something about the baby being up all night. I knew it was the wrong answer and found myself vaguely annoyed by my apparent need for self reflection, as though it were one more task, another load of laundry to fold, rather than the question I’d been needing to hear — the one that the rest of the world stopped asking years ago, back when every adult you met saw that glow of enthusiasm in your eyes and asked you hopefully, “What are you going to be when you grow up?” When we are young, people constantly ask us what we are going to be, what we are going to do when we reach that pinnacle of adulthood, finishing college and embarking on phase two of our two-part existence — when we would step out of the blur of childhood and strap on our future like a backpacker summiting Everest, thrusting our flags into the ground and screaming, “I made it!” but that’s not the end of the story, is it? Life is not a two-act play, but an epic saga, and we are forever changing and growing as the chapters unfold.

I have a Polaroid picture of me that summer, wearing a Mickey Mouse T-shirt and surrounded by my “co-workers.” My hair was puffed out from the humidity and my pale cheeks were covered in freckles. I was proudly gripping an envelope of cash which had been gathered by a grateful staff to compensate me for my considerable taxi expenses.

Somewhere along the way people stop asking you want you want to be when you grow up. In fact they stop asking what you want to be at all. And we stop asking ourselves.

I didn’t have much else going for me that year; my dad wasn’t around and my mom was working hard to keep food on the table. I was struggling in the chasm between childhood and adolescence, but I had spirit. I believed. I believed that we were just one Whitney Houston song away from world peace, that my dad would finally sober up, and I believed in myself.

I tucked the Polaroid into the corner of my mirror and began writing a list. I began with things that made me happy, like black licorice and the smell of clothes hanging on a line, and continued to write until my hand ached and I began to feel the flickering of my soul, the catalyst which would transform my list into my rawest and most vulnerable dreams — the ones I had tucked away, neglected, because they seemed childish. And I sat on the edge of my bed with pink cheeks and giggled because I realized I hadn’t finished growing up, and I never would.

I was the girl perched on the edge of the hard wooden bleacher bench nodding along at the third-grade assembly — the one where a motivational speaker passionately charges you, and your entire generation, with the changing of the world and leaves you with pink cheeks and plans to start an orphanage and inspire the world with all the poetry in your flannelcovered diary. At 35, when I stumbled upon that photo, I did have everything going for me. I had married my best friend, pursued my career and was raising five beautiful children. Life was full. I studied the photo, holding it up to the mirror and letting my eyes wander back and forth between my face and hers, considering these contrasting layers of myself. The freckle-faced child felt as distant as a dream, and I struggled to see her bold optimism buried in my own tired eyes. My mind slipped unexpectedly to an exchange I had with my mom recently while folding clothes at the dining room table.

And the light dims.

I picked up a pencil (yes, a pencil) and spent that summer writing a book while the dog barked and the doorbell rang and the baby dribbled apple juice down the back of my shirt. I still fold the laundry, but now I’m daydreaming about the next chapter I will write, or picture I will draw, or race I will run. And I don’t have to lecture my kids about following their dreams because they are watching me do it, and I know that the light they see in my eyes is worth a thousand words. I will ask my kids what they want to be when they grow up, and I will charge them with the changing of the world, and when I sit down to coffee with a friend, or my mother or grandmother, I will ask her the very same thing and watch for the flicker of light in her eyes. One of my favorite things about my work is that I encounter a lot of women whose stories never cease to amaze me. With each issue of skirt! magazine that I have been a part of (94 and counting), I have had the privilege of meeting the most talented and extraordinary women. Each month we share some of their remarkable stories. We celebrate who they are in the community, and we applaud their successes. We are their cheerleaders. But once a year we turn the tables. We give them the megaphone and invite them to shout their achievements from the rooftops! “Women at Work” is a special section for women of all professions to share their passion for their work. It gives them a platform to write in their own words why they love what they do. We ask them to share what other women can expect if they were to do business with them, and we encourage them to shake their pompoms! The women in this directory are brilliant. They are strong, they are beautiful, and they are smart! They have made mistakes, and they are better for them. They are building businesses, creating legacies, and changing lives. 1. What sparked you to write your blog? I started writing a blog to keep my family in the loop as I moved into my own apartment after college. I realized that I was posting about projects and crafts for my place more than anything else, so it took on more of a DIY vibe organically, with occasional recipes, life updates and travels included as well. y posts are de nitely tied to what s going on in my life, whether that is house renovations, hosting bridal showers, traveling, etc. 2. What gets you red up am very passionate about sports. m one of the most ompetitive people playing sports and will do what it takes to win the game at the expense of banging up my body. Off the eld, m ust as passionate about wat hing my teams play – I totally cried after my Atlanta Falcons lost the Super Bowl. That one still hurts.
