The Ben-Zion Collection There is a story breathing within these Eskimo and Northwest Coast Indian pieces—a story I want to tell you. When the artist Ben-Zion befriended Arie Ben-Eli, founder and director of the National Maritime Museum in Israel, they hatched a wild idea to endow a wing with ancient and ethnographic pieces from Ben-Zion’s collection. The relevance of such pieces to a maritime museum seemed eccentric, and grew yet more so when this vision expanded to include Ben-Zion’s own paintings, works on paper, and iron sculpture. These men understood the power of the oceans and bodies of water to connect and enrich humanity in a dance of insemination and cross-pollination. And just as these indigenous peoples living by seas, rivers, and lakes wove art into life, and life into art, so, too, the intense saturation of living- and creating-as-one was braided by Ben-Zion. When he removed the Eskimo artifacts housed in one of his endless cabinets of wonder, readying them for their voyage, he replaced them with clay concretions gathered from brooks and rivers, streams and seas, and said that these were no less precious to him than the rare Eskimo pieces. He said that the clay concretions were nature’s sculptures, and mounted them, revealing the essentiality of the form. Knowing something of Ben-Zion’s biography elucidates his approach to what he emphatically declared about “not being a collector.” He was a self-taught artist, erudite but not academic. He lived modestly, gathering around him the endless treasures created by nature and man. He liked to say that things came to him (whether found or bought) while sauntering. The home he shared with his beloved wife, Lillian, was covered wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling—pebbles, minerals, shells, meteorites, driftwood, pre-historic stone tools, ancient sculpture fragments, textiles, masks, hand-forged tools… these comingled with Ben-Zion’s artworks, as if they were in dialogue, as if they emanated from the same wellspring. The commonality was the archaic, primordial quality of things. Lillian would come to describe Ben-Zion as a beachcomber, whether on the shores of woods or city. She laughed as she recalled his going out for a loaf of bread and coming back with a string of ancient beads. He would say that when he held something in his hand, he knew if it wanted to stay. Indeed this was a way of being from his earliest childhood, when he gathered his found treasures under the family piano. Through nine blessed years of working with him, and in the decades since, I have come to feel more deeply the longing and celebration behind his usual salutation: “here’s to everything beautiful!” It was appreciation and awe. Everything he gathered was a testament to nature and mankind’s urge to breathe spirit into the ordinary matter of existence. Now, as I hold each piece in my hands, many lives flow into my palms. I wonder, as I hold the Eskimo snow goggles—what eyes peered through them, what inner and outer landscape did these eyes see? What compelled these people, whose daily existence was arduous, to carve symmetry and aesthetic into their functional objects? The figures, the animals—materials and themes so intimately tied to nature and the transient; the shamanistic artifacts pointing to the eternal—perhaps all this ties into mankind’s neverending need to beautify and adorn life with meaning. As I hold each piece, I feel Ben-Zion’s blessing hand allowing me to absorb what these pieces taught him by encouraging his desire to “touch the origins.” Like the artists/ shamans of these Indian and Eskimo peoples he knew that our existence is enlivened through longing and imagination and the world is created anew through wildness and vision. As I send these pieces out from this generous home, I pray that the roar of thunder and the flash of lightning of the shaman’s rattle clear the way for each piece to find its home. —Tabita Shalem, New York City, Spring 2017

Conditions of Sale 1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 2.
