I love the way Musigny can so effortlessly combine a silky palate impression with serious muscle. It is dense, full-bodied, prodigiously rich, massive in intensity, yet relatively light on its feet. This great ballerina of a wine has extraordinary ripeness but pulls back from the edge before going over the top. 15 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1995 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck “The 1995 Lafite-Rothschild (only one-third of the harvest made it into the final blend) is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc. The wine was showing spectacularly well when I tasted it in November, 1997. It exhibits a dark ruby purple color, and a sweet, powdered mineral, smoky, weedy cassis-scented nose. Beautiful sweetness of fruit is present in this mediumbodied, tightly-knit, but gloriously pure, welldelineated Lafite. The 1995 is not as powerful or as massive as the 1996, but it is beautifully made with outstanding credentials, in addition to remarkable promise. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2028.” R. Parker for TWA, 95 pts. 02/98 12 bottles (owc) $5,500-7,500 16 Chateau Latour 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: one bottom neck, two very top shoulder, two corks slightly depressed “Always somewhat atypical (which I suspect will be the case with the more modern day 2003), the 1982 Latour has been the most opulent, flamboyant, and precocious of the northern Medocs, especially the St.-Juliens, Pauillacs, and St.-Estephes. It hasn’t changed much over the last 10-15 years, revealing sweet tannins as well as extraordinarily decadent, even extravagant levels of fruit, glycerin, and body. It is an amazing wine, and on several occasions, I have actually picked it as a right bank Pomerol because of the lushness and succulence of the cedary, blackberry, black currant fruit. This vintage has always tasted great, even in its youth, and revealed a precociousness that one does not associate with this Chateau. However, the 1982 is still evolving at a glacial pace. The concentration remains remarkable, and the wine is a full-bodied, exuberant, rich, classic Pauillac in its aromatic and flavor profiles. It’s just juiced up (similar to an athlete on steroids) and is all the better for it. This remarkable effort will last as long as the 1982 Mouton, but it has always been more approachable and decadently fruity. Drink it now, in 20 years, and in 50 years! With several hours of aeration, the aromatics become striking, with notes of smoke, toast, creme de cassis, mineral, and white flowers. Very full-bodied, with high but sweet tannin, great purity, and a very masculine, full-bodied style, this wine should prove nearly immortal in terms of its aging potential. 24 Chateau Pichon Lalande 1982 Pauillac, 2eme Cru Classe u: one very top shoulder, one top shoulder, case wear to capsules “Whilst I enjoyed several bona fide perfect examples of the 1982 Château Pichon Lalande in the late nineties, my most recent encounters imply that these years were its peak. Nevertheless, it remains a brilliant, benchmark wine that continues to give a great deal of pleasure. This bottle, of perfect provenance, was captivating on the nose still youthful and jam-packed with very pure and intense black and red fruit, mixed with cedar and graphite notes that ebb away as the Merlot component takes over and delivers strawberry and undergrowth scents. The palate retains its exquisite balance thanks to its fine tannin and layers of black, graphiteinfused fruit that ease you into its sumptuous finish. It is a long-term wine, so do not be surprised if it continues along its plateau for another 20 years. Why is it not 100 points in my book? Well, compared to the 1982 Latour, it does not possess that same level of precision or length. Yet the bottom line is that both wines represent fabulous, era-defining contributions to this legendary vintage, and both continue to offer profound expression of Pauillac at its peak.” R. The firm structure underpinning the ripe medium weight flavors remains well integrated and there is good volume if not the sheer depth of the finest vintages. Over several hours, this becomes superbly elegant and spicy with outstanding precision and detail and it’s clear that the extended aeration is the key to really getting all there is out of the ‘96 GE at this point. This is still on the way up and in good storage, it should live for decades. Moreover, given how many ‘96s are showing today, this has to rank among the best of the vintage. That said, I would continue to cellar this for another few years though if you’re going to try one now it would not be a crime provided that it was decanted for an hour or so first. In sum, this is a dramatic and extremely impressive wine that has it all. 41 Domaine de la Romanee Conti La Tache 2012 Cote de Nuits “The surprisingly expressive nose is almost completely dominated by various floral aromas that include violets, lavender and rose petal. There is of course a broad array of spice elements to the red and black currant aromas but they are nuances compared to the floral characters. The wonderfully intense and concentrated middle weight plus flavors possess arguably even more dry extract that, for the moment anyway, pushes the firm tannic spine completely to the background and as such the mouth feel is incredibly rich and opulent. While Romanée-Conti is almost always astonishingly complex it is not always more so than the La Tâche but in 2012 the king of complexity in the DRC range is indisputably Romanée-Conti. There is also a remarkable amount of minerality and the overall impression is one of seamless harmony. The robust and full-bodied flavors don’t appear to have budged much since my initial review as the supporting tannins are still notably firm on the wonderfully long, palate coating and deep finish. This muscular and overtly robust effort is definitely a big wine and one that will see its 30th birthday without difficulty and for my taste, I would be strongly inclined to give this at least another 8 to 10 years in the cellar. If you are inclined to try a bottle now, I would absolutely suggest giving it 30 to 60 minutes in a decanter first. In sum, this is a beautiful effort that should age gracefully for years. 229 Harlan Estate 2004 Napa “Another rating identical to that which was given in 2007 (when first tasted from bottle), the 2004 Harlan Estate is performing essentially the way I suggested in 2007 as it is one of the more precocious and accessible of the Harlan Estate wines to date. A great showing at this retrospective, this wine, which seems like a hypothetical blend of a Pauillac, St.-Estephe and Graves, represents around 1,500 cases from 40 acres of beautifully manicured hillside vineyards overlooking Oakville. Still dense purple to the rim, with notes of creme de cassis, charcoal, blackberry and sweet toast, the wine is full-bodied and voluptuously textured with the tannins largely resolved. But the density and richness suggest this wine can go a long, long way, even though the window for drinking it seems open and inviting already. A world-class, firstgrowth wine if there ever was one from Napa, this is simply an exquisite Harlan Estate that has atypically reached mid to late adolescence at the age of ten. The 2005 is incredibly youthful at age ten, although certainly drinkable. And who wouldn’t consume it if they had the opportunity? It will benefit from another 5-10 years of cellaring and certainly has 30 or more years left in its evolutionary curve. Gorgeous, and tasting akin to a hypothetical Pauillac blended with a great Pessac-Léognan from Bordeaux comes to mind because of the smoky, subtle barbecue notes, fruitcake, forest floor, graphite and minerality. The wine has stunning fruit and a full-bodied, powerful richness, yet is still nimble on its feet. 239 Screaming Eagle 2001 Napa “The last time I had this wine, it seemed much more developed, youthful and approachable. This particular bottle, which was pulled from my cellar, was super-powerful, dense and concentrated, as well as structured and backward. Aeration helped somewhat, but this looks like a very long-lived wine, and my initial suggestion of an anticipated maturity date (2010-2025) should be changed to 2015-2035. Only 450 cases were made of this blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc from former proprietor Jean Phillips’ vineyards just south of the Oakville crossroads. The spectacular dense blue/purple color remains opaque. 242 Screaming Eagle 2004 Napa “Aged 20 months in 72% new French oak, this blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc comes from a great vineyard on the valley floor in Oakville, just south of Rudd Estate and Plumpjack. The wine’s dense ruby/purple color is followed by a beautiful, Pauillac-like (think Pontet Canet or Mouton), ethereal perfume of creme de cassis, or as Michael Broadbent used to say, “celestial black currants,” full body, a velvety texture, fine tannins, a multidimensional mouthfeel, and a terrific finish. While there were no real surprises tasting this wine, I was somewhat intrigued by just how youthful the 2004 Screaming Eagle is showing. I had expected it to reveal slightly more evolution. I thought the 13% Merlot in the blend would push the evolution more quickly. The finish lasts for a full minute. As it has been in just about every vintage, the 2004 is a profound wine. It is for others to decide if it is overpriced, but this is undeniably a great wine that competes on the world stage with the best that exist.” R. A profound example of Chateau Latour, the full-bodied, opulent 2003 is already performing well at age eleven, which is somewhat atypical. The pH is a relatively high 3.8, which also indicates low acidity. The wine is very ripe, but not over-ripe, offers great freshness, and lots of creme de cassis and camphor as well as hints of blackberries and chocolate. Dense, thick and unctuously textured, this staggering Latour is undeniably the most sumptuous, opulent wine made here since the 1982 or 1961. Drink it over the next two decades.” R. In 2008 the cold growing season stretched into October and the wine definitely has the feel of a cool vintage. The spring frost and the second year of drought conditions lowered yields significantly. Yields were just 1.25 tons per acre on average, but some of the older vineyards came in at less than 1 ton per acre. The balance of fruit, tannin and structure is simply extraordinary, but the wine needs time, most likely lots of it. In 2008 the blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot. Eric Baugher describes 2009 as a year with cold weather early on, followed by heat in early June and July. Skinner, Inc. & Lower Falls Wine Co. Conditions of Sale – Fine Wines & Rare Spirits Auction 1. All bidders and buyers of wine must be at least 21 years of age and shall present satisfying legal documentation of this at auction. In the event the buyer is a partnership or corporate entity, the receiver of the wine shall furnish proof fulfilling this criteria. 2. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc., below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event, and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 3. All property is sold “as is,” and neither Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation or any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, or description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice, or in the catalog, or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability. Prospective buyers are urged to inspect those lots they have interest in. 4. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by Skinner, Inc. shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale. The auctioneer shall have sole discretion to refuse any bid, or refuse to acknowledge any bidder. Please note Massachusetts state law requires all purchasers of alcoholic beverages be at least 21 years of age. Any bidder that plans on spending in excess of $100,000 should make arrangements with the accounting department at least five (5) days in advance of the sale, as a deposit may be required to participate. 5. All merchandise purchased is payable directly to Skinner Inc., and must be paid for the day of the auction. All merchandise must be removed from Lower Falls Wine Co. within forty five (45) days of the auction, and in no event shall Skinner Inc. or Lower Falls Wine Co. have any liability for any damage to property left on its premises for more than fourteen (14) days after the sale. Lower Falls Wine Co. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage fee per lot as determined by Lower Falls Wine Co. (see Collection of Wines). If any property has not been removed within forty-five (45) days from the date of sale, at the option of Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. (a) the merchandise may be transferred to and stored at a bonded warehouse and the purchaser agrees to pay all transfer and storage expenses, and/or (b) Skinner Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. may place the merchandise in a subsequent auction, without Reserve, to be sold to the highest bidder, and after deducting the standard commission and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds to the purchaser. 6. Acceptable forms of payment are cash, good check, or wire transfers, payable in U.S. dollars. Checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing the check. Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. reserve the right to hold merchandise purchased until the funds have cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner and/or Lower Falls Wine Co. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. 7. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Skinner Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has breached any of its obligations, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale. 8. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser for such item. 9. Lower Falls Wine Co. may, in their discretion and at purchaser’s request, package and arrange for delivery as directed by the purchaser. In such event, purchaser agrees that (a) all such packaging, handling and delivery is at the sole risk of the purchaser and that Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. shall have no liability for any loss or damage to such items, and (b) purchaser shall pay in advance, all packaging expenses, including labor, materials, carriers fees and all insurance charges. Please arrange seventy-two (72) hours in advance for collection and delivery. Purchaser shall make itself aware of the limitations and restrictions imposed by various states in regards to the transportation and importation of alcoholic beverages and purchaser has the sole responsibility to research and comply with all permit and licensing requirements. Neither Skinner, Inc. nor Lower Falls Wine Co. shall be responsible for obtaining any permits or licenses on behalf of purchaser and no sale shall be cancelled or refunded for lack of purchaser’s noncompliance with permitting and licensing issues. A premium equal to 23% of the final bid price up to and including $100,000, plus 20% of the final bid price from $100,001 up to and including $1,000,000, plus 12% of the final bid price from $1,000,001 and over will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. 11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms printed within, posted, and announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid. 12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalog. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalog, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent. 13. Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted. Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 20 years. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine. Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions. Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on. Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful), until the flight concludes. Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you dispose of it.

Collection of Goods Your Wines Lower Falls Wine Co. will endeavor to release or transport your goods to you as quickly as possible. The inherent nature of fine wine—particularly aged bottles—requires that due care be taken in its storage and transport. We request your partnership in making sure no harm arises during storage, collection or transportation. We may offer suggestions as to the best course of action to safeguard your purchase. Fees charged are only to recover associated costs and are not intended to create a profit center from the act of getting your goods to you. When using an outside shipper or when having a person other than the invoiced party collect your purchases, Lower Falls Wine Co. must have the appropriate signed and faxed release form. Pick-up of Wines Collection is available by prior arrangement only at: Lower Falls Wine Co. 2366 Washington Street (Rt. 16) Newton Lower Falls, MA 02462 Please schedule your pick-up by contacting Lower Falls Wine Co., 617.332.3000, staff@lowerfallswine.com, a minimum of seventy-two hours in advance. Full payment of all applicable charges must be received prior to the release of any goods. Goods will only be released to those over 21 years of age. Proof of age will be required. Issues with Regard to Transportation All bidders should make themselves aware of the limitations and restrictions imposed by various states with regard to the importation of alcoholic beverages which have been purchased at auction and transported into any states jurisdiction. All buyers have the sole responsibility to research, understand, and comply with all permit or license requirements before collection or transport of purchases occurs. Wines, Spirits, and Ales must be collected by the purchaser, an authorized person(s), or their designated shipper licensed to transport alcoholic beverages. Please refer to the Third Party section below. Neither Skinner Inc. nor Lower Falls Wine Co. is responsible for obtaining any permits or licenses on behalf of any bidder. Bidders are strongly urged to understand the individual state statutes with regard to importation prior to participation in any auction to insure compliance with said statutes. Local Delivery Lower Falls Wine Co. will deliver inside Route 495. Buyers arranging Massachusetts delivery outside of Route 495 should inquire as to the fees for delivery. Deliveries are made Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Delivery will usually occur within one week of your request. All fees associated with delivery must be paid in advance of delivery. We reserve the right to (re)package items if deemed necessary for a nominal fee. Goods will only be delivered to, and must be signed for by, someone over 21 years of age. Third-Party Delivery For third-party shipments, Skinner and Lower Falls Wine Co. advise you to consider: • Manhattan Wine Company, www.mwcwine.com, 973.574.8701, contact Chris Seeley, chris@mwcwine.com: a New York wine transportation and storage service provider for large and small purchasers, with a network of national contacts and common carriers. Massachusetts law prohibits the shipment of alcohol out of state by common carriers (FedEX, UPS, etc.). Splits Any lot that is split for either pick-up or delivery will be subject to a nominal charge. Storage Complimentary storage of any purchases will not exceed forty-five days past the auction date. All uncollected lots will be charged $100 per month (or fraction thereof). Purchases in excess of ten lots will be subject to a fee of a minimum of $250 per month. Lower Falls Wine Co. will not be liable for wines fourteen (14) days after auction date. For long term storage please contact International Wine Vault (617) 739-4401/www.intlwinevault.com. IWV makes regular pick-ups from Lower Falls Wine Co.
