Cellar trimming from a savvy collector and friend of Skinner. Removed from a temperature-controlled, custom-built cellar by Skinner specialists. 1 Charles Heidsieck l’Oenothèque 2000 “Champagne Charlie” 1985 Reims 1 bottle $150-200 2 Roederer Cristal 2002 Epernay L. Perrotti-Brown for TWA, 94 pts. 05/09 1 bottle $150-225 3 Roederer Cristal 2005 Epernay 2 bottles $200-300 4 Chateau Pontet Canet 2010 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 02/13 1 magnum $250-350 5 Chateau Rieussec 2009 Fargues, 1er Cru Classe “The team at Chateau Rieussec have conjured a stellar wine in 2009. There is a little reduction at first that fortunately blows away, revealing thickly layered scents of honey, Danish pastry and quince that appear to gain vigor with every passing sip. The palate is stunning: very viscous in the mouth with tangy grapefruit, honey and white peach. It is still primal, but the acidity is perfectly judged and there is a life-affirming sense of precision and tension towards the finish. Exceptional. Drink now2045.” N. Martin for TWA, 97 pts. 02/13 4 bottles $500-700 6 Jadot Gevrey Chambertin Clos St. Jacques 2010 Cote de Nuits A. Galloni for TWA, (93-95) pts. 02/12 4 bottles $350-525 7 Comtes Lafon Meursault Les Charmes 2009 Cote de Beaune Burghound, 93 pts. 06/12 3 bottles $325-475

8 Comtes Lafon Meursault Les Charmes 2012 Cote de Beaune Burghound, 94 pts. 06/15 3 bottles $425-550 9 Comtes Lafon Meursault Les Genevrières 2006 Cote de Beaune “Here too there is mild oak influence to the naturally exotic and spicy yellow fruit aromas that merge seamlessly into rich, pure and citrus-infused medium plus-bodied flavors that possess obvious minerality and terrific vibrancy that continue onto the explosive and harmonious finish. I find it most impressive that a wine of such obvious power can also deliver such finesse. In a word, lovely.” Burghound, (91-93) pts. 07/08 3 bottles $325-450 10 Meo Camuzet Vosne Romanée Les Chaumes 2005 Cote de Nuits “A deft touch of wood frames highly spiced black berry and cherry fruit aromas trimmed in hints of underbrush and warm earth that complement the very rich, refined and admirably concentrated flavors that are both complex and delicious, all wrapped in a vibrant and velvety finish. This is quite firm, dense and serious but beautifully balanced and the ‘05 is one of the best vintages that I have seen for the Méo Chaumes. Simply great potential for development over the medium term, which is to say over the next decade.” Burghound, 93 pts. 07/08 3 bottles $375-525 11 Comte de Vogüé Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2007 Cote de Nuits “The step up in class is unmistakable with gorgeously complex, even kaleidoscopic and superbly elegant red, black and violet aromas trimmed with a dazzling array of spices, earth and a hint of smoke that adds unmistakable luster to the round, intense, muscular and exceptionally stylish broad-scaled flavors that possess excellent power and a building intensity that develops from the mid-palate to the explosive yet seductive finish. I really like the purity of expression here on the sappy and mineral-infused finish that has a dusty quality from all of the dry extract that coats the firm tannins. This is a big ‘07 built on a base of firm minerality but it remains impeccably well balanced and should live for decades so patience is definitely a virtue if you are a potential buyer.” Burghound, 95 pts. 01/10 1 bottle $300-350

Online bidding at www.skinnerinc.com

12 Comte de Vogüé Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2008 Cote de Nuits “This is also quite reserved at present with an elegant, airy, cool and pure nose that is kaleidoscopically complex as it offers red currant, plum, black cherry and a panoply of floral and spice notes, in particular violet and anise, before marrying seamlessly into mineral-driven and alluring big-bodied flavors that explode on the powerful and almost painfully intense finish that delivers genuinely stunning length. I love the way Musigny can so effortlessly combine a silky palate impression with serious muscle. This should be quite impressive in time though note that it will need a minimum of 18 to 25 years of cellar time.” Burghound, 96 pts. 01/11 1 bottle $350-450 13 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Napa “The prodigious 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, including fruit from some of the oldest Cabernet vines still in existence in Napa. This full-bodied classic displays notes of forest floor, earth, crème de cassis, blackberry liqueur, licorice and some pen ink. It is dense, full-bodied, prodigiously rich, massive in intensity, yet relatively light on its feet. This great ballerina of a wine has extraordinary ripeness but pulls back from the edge before going over the top. There are 1,000 cases of this classic, which should age effortlessly for 30+ years.” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 12/15 3 bottles (owc) $1,300-1,700

From the pristine cellar of a Massachusetts gentleman. The two pillars of France, mature first growth Bordeaux (in multiple formats) and Grand Cru Burgundy. Removed from custombuilt home cellar by Skinner specialists. 14 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1989 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck 12 bottles $5,000-6,500

15 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1995 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck “The 1995 Lafite-Rothschild (only one-third of the harvest made it into the final blend) is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc. The wine was showing spectacularly well when I tasted it in November, 1997. It exhibits a dark ruby purple color, and a sweet, powdered mineral, smoky, weedy cassis-scented nose. Beautiful sweetness of fruit is present in this mediumbodied, tightly-knit, but gloriously pure, welldelineated Lafite. The 1995 is not as powerful or as massive as the 1996, but it is beautifully made with outstanding credentials, in addition to remarkable promise. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2028.” R. Parker for TWA, 95 pts. 02/98 12 bottles (owc) $5,500-7,500 16 Chateau Latour 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: one bottom neck, two very top shoulder, two corks slightly depressed “Always somewhat atypical (which I suspect will be the case with the more modern day 2003), the 1982 Latour has been the most opulent, flamboyant, and precocious of the northern Medocs, especially the St.-Juliens, Pauillacs, and St.-Estephes. It hasn’t changed much over the last 10-15 years, revealing sweet tannins as well as extraordinarily decadent, even extravagant levels of fruit, glycerin, and body. It is an amazing wine, and on several occasions, I have actually picked it as a right bank Pomerol because of the lushness and succulence of the cedary, blackberry, black currant fruit. This vintage has always tasted great, even in its youth, and revealed a precociousness that one does not associate with this Chateau. However, the 1982 is still evolving at a glacial pace. The concentration remains remarkable, and the wine is a full-bodied, exuberant, rich, classic Pauillac in its aromatic and flavor profiles. It’s just juiced up (similar to an athlete on steroids) and is all the better for it. This remarkable effort will last as long as the 1982 Mouton, but it has always been more approachable and decadently fruity. Drink it now, in 20 years, and in 50 years! Don’t miss it if you are a wine lover.” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 06/09 3 bottles $3,000-4,250 17 Chateau Margaux 1982 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: three bottom neck, three very top shoulder R. Parker for TWA, 98 pts. 06/09 6 bottles $3,000-4,250

18 Chateau Margaux 1986 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: four into neck, two bottom neck, case wear to capsules and one label with handwritten notation “A magnificent example of Chateau Margaux and one of the most tannic, backward Margauxs of the last 50 years, the 1986 continues to evolve at a glacial pace. The color is still a dense ruby/purple with just a hint of lightening at the rim. With several hours of aeration, the aromatics become striking, with notes of smoke, toast, creme de cassis, mineral, and white flowers. Very full-bodied, with high but sweet tannin, great purity, and a very masculine, full-bodied style, this wine should prove nearly immortal in terms of its aging potential. It is beginning to budge from its infantile stage and approach adolescence. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2050.” R. Parker for TWA, 98 pts. 01/03 6 bottles $2,000-2,800 19 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1975 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: one very top shoulder, two top shoulder, oxidation and corrosion to capsules, staining, bin soil and tears at bottom edges of labels 3 magnums $1,500-2,100 20 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1989 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: into neck 1 6L bottle $2,400-3,500 21 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1993 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck, case wear and losses to three labels 12 bottles (owc) $3,000-4,250 22 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1995 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck R. Parker for TWA, 95 pts. 02/98 12 bottles (owc) $4,000-5,500 23 Chateau Palmer 1989 Margaux, 2eme Cru Classe u: twelve bottom neck or better, nine very top shoulder, two top shoulder, one high mid shoulder, four bottles with slight capsule corrosion N. Martin for TWA, 96 pts. 05/16 24 demi bottles $2,400-4,750

24 Chateau Pichon Lalande 1982 Pauillac, 2eme Cru Classe u: one very top shoulder, one top shoulder, case wear to capsules “Whilst I enjoyed several bona fide perfect examples of the 1982 Château Pichon Lalande in the late nineties, my most recent encounters imply that these years were its peak. Nevertheless, it remains a brilliant, benchmark wine that continues to give a great deal of pleasure. This bottle, of perfect provenance, was captivating on the nose still youthful and jam-packed with very pure and intense black and red fruit, mixed with cedar and graphite notes that ebb away as the Merlot component takes over and delivers strawberry and undergrowth scents. The palate retains its exquisite balance thanks to its fine tannin and layers of black, graphiteinfused fruit that ease you into its sumptuous finish. It is a long-term wine, so do not be surprised if it continues along its plateau for another 20 years. Why is it not 100 points in my book? Well, compared to the 1982 Latour, it does not possess that same level of precision or length. Yet the bottom line is that both wines represent fabulous, era-defining contributions to this legendary vintage, and both continue to offer profound expression of Pauillac at its peak.” R. Parker for TWA, 98 pts. 07/16 2 bottles $900-1,200 25 Chateau Lynch Bages 1982 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe u: one bottom neck, two very top shoulder, one with signs of old seepage and light capsule corrosion 3 bottles $600-900

26 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Romanee Conti 1997 Cote de Nuits “An intensely floral nose that is surprisingly reserved, particularly for a vintage that in many cases has already peaked, also evidence notes of spice and dried rose petal and significantly, there is no sign of surmaturité or the obverse case of undue greenness. The firm structure underpinning the ripe medium weight flavors remains well integrated and there is good volume if not the sheer depth of the finest vintages. In sum, a deceptively graceful wine that is still on its way up. Multiple, and consistent, notes. Burghound, 93 pts. 01/08 2 bottles $16,000-24,000

A dazzling line-up of Domaine de la Romanee Conti ending with a rare curveball. Maintained in ideal cellar conditions and removed by a Skinner specialist. 29 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Echezeaux 1993 Cote de Nuits u: 1.5cm, very slight corrosion to capsules, staining and losses to labels 2 bottles $1,600-2,000 30 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Grands Echezeaux 1993 Cote de Nuits u: 1.5cm, staining and losses to label Burghound, 93 pts. 04/15 1 bottle $700-1,100 31 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Grands Echezeaux 1996 Cote de Nuits u: one 1cm, one 2cm, two 2.5cm, light corrosion to one capsule and evidence of old seepage, light bin soil and staining to labels “Deep ruby. What was once quite aromatically tight and backward has now begun to open to reveal elegant red and black fruit aromas nuanced by ample spice and warm earth nuances that are followed by middle weight, focused and still somewhat reserved flavors that culminate in a firm but not hard finish and while there is noticeable acidity present, it is not in the aggressive fashion that plagues any number of ‘96s. Over several hours, this becomes superbly elegant and spicy with outstanding precision and detail and it’s clear that the extended aeration is the key to really getting all there is out of the ‘96 GE at this point. This is still on the way up and in good storage, it should live for decades. Moreover, given how many ‘96s are showing today, this has to rank among the best of the vintage. Multiple, and consistent, notes save for one bottle that exhibited definite signs of brett.” Burghound, 94 pts. 04/16 4 bottles $3,250-4,500

32 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Richebourg 1991 Cote de Nuits u: two 3cm, one 2.5cm, one 2cm, three with very slight losses to tops of capsules, one with wrinkled capsule, bin staining and bin soil to labels Burghound, 95 pts. 06/16 4 bottles $5,500-8,000 33 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Richebourg 1992 Cote de Nuits u: two 1cm, two 2cm, one 2.5cm, two 3cm, one 3.5cm, two capsules with corrosion (one heavy with evidence of old seepage), slight deterioration at capsule top perforations, two with ever so slight capsule corrosion, slight staining and scuffs to labels, four slightly depressed corks 8 bottles $6,000-8,000 34 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Richebourg 1993 Cote de Nuits u: one 2.5cm, one 3cm, oxidation to one capsule with evidence of old seepage, staining, scuffs, and label edges nicked Burghound, 94 pts. 06/16 2 bottles $2,400-3,500 35 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Romanee St. Vivant Marey Monge 1993 Cote de Nuits u: one 0.5cm, one 1.5cm, one 2.5cm with capsule corrosion and signs of old seepage, light bin marks to one label “A classic and explosive RSV nose with superbly elegant black fruit aromas that also display hints of dried flowers and stem hints along with the usually Asian spice nuances is followed by still tight, pure, concentrated and intense flavors of outstanding complexity and length. This is dense and still relatively young though not so much that it can’t be enjoyed. That said, I would continue to cellar this for another few years though if you’re going to try one now it would not be a crime provided that it was decanted for an hour or so first. In sum, this is a dramatic and extremely impressive wine that has it all. Multiple, and mostly consistent, notes though a few bottles have displayed a more pronounced stemminess on the nose that some may find mildly offputting.” Burghound, 94 pts. 06/16 3 bottles $2,500-3,500

36 Domaine de la Romanee Conti La Tache 1988 Cote de Nuits u: 1.5cm, light staining and nicking to label, unadhered at lower right corner Burghound, 93 pts. 09/05 1 bottle $1,500-2,000 37 Domaine de la Romanee Conti La Tache 1993 Cote de Nuits u: one 1.5cm, one 2cm, one 2.5cm, capsule corrosion and evidence of old seepage to one, light staining and losses to labels Burghound, 95 pts. 06/16 3 bottles $5,000-7,000 38 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Fine Bourgogne Brandy 1979 Burgundy u: 2.5cm, light bin soil to wax capsule, small stain to label 1 bottle $400-600

41 Domaine de la Romanee Conti La Tache 2012 Cote de Nuits “The surprisingly expressive nose is almost completely dominated by various floral aromas that include violets, lavender and rose petal. There is of course a broad array of spice elements to the red and black currant aromas but they are nuances compared to the floral characters. The wonderfully intense and concentrated middle weight plus flavors possess arguably even more dry extract that, for the moment anyway, pushes the firm tannic spine completely to the background and as such the mouth feel is incredibly rich and opulent. While Romanée-Conti is almost always astonishingly complex it is not always more so than the La Tâche but in 2012 the king of complexity in the DRC range is indisputably Romanée-Conti. There is also a remarkable amount of minerality and the overall impression is one of seamless harmony. While I don’t think that the 2012 Romanée-Conti will be able to rival the 2009 and 2010 versions, it’s almost certainly going to be close.” Burghound, 98 pts. 01/15 1 bottle $1,800-2,200 42 Vega Sicilia Unico 1994 Ribera del Duero u: into neck N. 62 Bond St. Eden 2001 Napa “Utterly perfect, another wine that seems to have taken on a first-growth Pauillac-like character (think Mouton-Rothschild) is the 2001 St. Eden. With a remarkably perfumed nose of crushed rocks, subtle barbecue smoke, and again, cedar wood intermixed with creme de cassis and blackberry, this wine displays a phenomenally concentrated mouthfeel, full-bodied opulence, voluptuous texture, and of this trio, is certainly the closest to its apogee of full maturity.” R. This utterly perfect, flawless wine reveals great intensity along with a wonderful perfume of roasted coffee, blueberries, blackberries, spring flowers, forest floor and crushed rock. Full-bodied and viscous without being heavy, the wine possesses admirable precision as well as good acidity and balance. This stunning wine is developing beautifully.” R. There is a relatively refined mouth feel to the highly energetic, welldetailed and solidly mineral-driven medium weight plus flavors that possess a sleek muscularity on the superbly long and strikingly complex finale. This is one of those wines that even though it is still several years away from its peak it is so well-balanced that it could easily be enjoyed now with 30 or so minutes in a carafe first. That said I would be inclined to allow this at least another 5 years of cellar time and 10 may in fact be closer to the optimum. Tasted several times since release though not since 2008 though with consistent notes.” Burghound, 95 pts. 06/16 5 bottles $2,700-3,500

98 Michel Lafarge Volnay Clos des Chenes 1999 Cote de Beaune “Even though this is now 17 years into its evolution, this is still a very serious wine that with air displays only moderate secondary fruit development on the gorgeously perfumed, spice and discreetly earthy nose. The robust and full-bodied flavors don’t appear to have budged much since my initial review as the supporting tannins are still notably firm on the wonderfully long, palate coating and deep finish. This muscular and overtly robust effort is definitely a big wine and one that will see its 30th birthday without difficulty and for my taste, I would be strongly inclined to give this at least another 8 to 10 years in the cellar. If you are inclined to try a bottle now, I would absolutely suggest giving it 30 to 60 minutes in a decanter first. In sum, this is a beautiful effort that should age gracefully for years. Multiple, and consistent, notes including several recently and save for one bottle that was exceptionally advanced, my impressions have been consistent.” Burghound, 96 pts. 06/16 6 bottles $1,000-1,400 99 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 1998 Cote de Nuits “This has always had a wonderful nose and it has now reached the front edge of full maturity that complements well a flavor profile is a classy middleweight fighter’s grace and athleticism rather than a heavyweight’s power. The once relatively firm tannins have largely, if not completely, resolved to create a velvety and mouth coating texture that further delivers excellent length. There is a hint of acidity poking through on the finish but overall, this is indisputably an unqualified success for the vintage. Tasted multiple times with consistent notes.” Burghound, 91 pts. 06/11 6 bottles $600-800

110 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Grands Echezeaux 2001 Cote de Nuits “All the promise this showed in my last review (see Issue 13) is alive and well and while the floral yet extremely earthy nose with elegant ripe, pure, intense, beautifully delineated crushed black fruit aromas is still quite expressive, the plum and anise laced broadshouldered flavors that were closing down have begun to open once again. The finish displays firm, dusty, almost robust structure yet the tannins themselves seem refined and overall, this is an incredibly powerful wine, indeed even a forceful one but with no lack of class. There remains fine upside potential here and to that end I have slightly upgraded my score as this is a very special wine. I should note however that this has arrived at the stage of its evolution where it’s clearly not yet fully mature but it’s not so far away that it can’t be enjoyed, particularly if given 30 minutes of air first.” Burghound, 94 pts. 04/13 3 bottles $2,100-2,700 111 Joseph Roty Charmes Chambertin Tres Vieilles Vignes 2002 Cote de Nuits “A heavily toasted nose with spice, wood and tar nuances frames ripe but fresh black pinot fruit and cassis aromas that also display an extraordinary panoply of secondary nuances, including earth, underbrush, leather, soy and spice. The powerful, rich and utterly delicious big-bodied and very concentrated flavors coat and stain the palate and completely buffer the now softening tannic spine on the superbly long finish. In short, this is flat out incredible juice and while it’s clearly quite oaky, the wood somehow works quite well with the wine even though it’s far from invisible. As to drinkability, I would probably opt to hold the ‘02 Charmes for a few more years but it could easily be drunk now with pleasure.” Burghound, 95 pts. 05/11 3 bottles $800-1,200

There is outstanding richness to the pliant and lush medium-bodied flavors that deliver a beautifully long and mouth coating finish. While the supporting tannins are almost fully resolved and thus this could easily be enjoyed now, I would hold my remaining bottles for another 3 to 5 years first. But the good news is that this is sufficiently close to peaking that it would not be a vinous crime to enjoy the ‘00 Bèze now.” Burghound, 93 pts. 10/14 5 bottles $3,000-3,575 117 Comte de Vogüé Musigny Vieilles Vignes 1985 Cote de Nuits u: one 0.5cm, one 1cm, slight nicking, scuffs, tears, small edge piece missing to one label 2 bottles $800-1,200 118 Comtes de Vogüé Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses 1989 Cote de Nuits u: all 0.5cm 3 bottles $600-900

119 M. Chapoutier Cote Rotie La Mordoree 1991 Northern Rhone u: both 3cm, damp- and wine-stained labels “In the same class as the great single-vineyard Cote Roties made by Marcel Guigal (i.e., La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne), La Mordoree is most akin to La Mouline in its seductive, otherworldly fragrance and layers of sweet, expansive, velvety-textured fruit. There were 400 cases made of this saturated purple-colored wine. Its huge bouquet and spectacularly rich, layered personality offer an astonishing example of what low yields from a naturally farmed vineyard and an unfined, unfiltered winemaking philosophy can achieve.” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 01/97 2 magnums $500-700 120 M. Chapoutier Ermitage le Pavillon 1989 Northern Rhone u: two 1cm, one 1.5cm, bin wear to capsules “The 1989 Le Pavilion is a prodigious wine. Made from yields of 14 hectoliters per hectare, this parcel of old vines (averaging 70-80 years of age) has produced an opaque black/purple-colored wine, with a hauntingly stunning bouquet of violets, cassis, minerals, and new oak. In the mouth, the similarity in texture, richness, and perfect balance to the compelling 1986 Mouton-Rothschild is striking, only this wine is richer and longer. This extraordinarily well-balanced wine will probably not be ready to drink for at least 5-10 years, but it will evolve for three decades or more. It is an enormous yet amazingly well-delineated wine. I lament the fact that there are only 600 cases of this magnificent wine.” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 01/97 3 bottles $600-900 121 M. Chapoutier Ermitage le Pavillon 1990 Northern Rhone u: both 1cm, evidence of old seepage “The 1990 Le Pavilion is as compelling as the 1989. It exhibits slightly less opulence, but more power and weight. Black colored, with an extraordinary perfume of licorice, sweet blackcurrants, smoke, and minerals, it coats the palate with layer upon layer of decadently rich, superconcentrated, nearly viscous Syrah flavors. There is amazing glycerin, a chewy, unctuous texture, and phenomenal length. The tannins, which are considerable when analyzed, are virtually obscured by the massive quantities of fruit.” R. 122 M. Chapoutier Ermitage le Pavillon 1991 Northern Rhone u: 3.5cm “This is a Le Pavilion of mythical proportions. Produced from extremely old vines, some dating from the mid-nineteenth century, with yields averaging under 15 hectoliters per hectare, this is the richest, most concentrated and profound wine made in Hermitage. The 1991 Ermitage Le Pavilion follows the pattern of the 1989 and 1990-it is another perfect wine. The saturated black/purple color is followed by a compelling bouquet of spices, roasted meats, and black and red fruits. Enormously concentrated yet with brilliant focus and delineation to its awesomely endowed personality, this extraordinary wine should age effortlessly for three plus decades. Very powerful and full, yet displaying silky tannin, this is a seamless beauty!” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 01/97 1 bottle $200-300

Voluptuous, yet classy and still refined, with awesome cassis and blackberry fruit, flowers, rose petal and hints of rendered bacon fat, it is full-bodied, textured and layered on the palate, with no hard edges and killer length on the finish. When the wine hits the mouth with its enormous weight and extraction of flavor, one can’t help but be seduced by such enormous richness and purity. Black in color, with layers of richness, huge body, massive extraction, and a phenomenal finish, it is another legend from Marcel Guigal. It boasts a dense purple color as well as a wonderful multidimensional personality with a huge perfume of charcoal, black truffles, chocolate, blackberries, blueberries and subtle oak. Full-bodied with a voluptuous texture in addition to a structured, intense style, it appears to be still holding much of its character in reserve. There is fabulous upside potential, but the 2001 is a firmer, more concentrated, potentially longer lived wine than the first two vintages. 206 Colgin Cariad 2002 Napa “Probably the least evolved, although certainly accessible, stunningly complex, and just a point short of pure perfection is the 2002 Cariad. It is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all purchased fruit from the David Abreu-owned and managed vineyards of Madrona Ranch in St. Helena and Thorevilos, behind the Meadowood Resort. Strikingly dark plum/purple in color, with notes of white chocolate, barbecue smoke, graphite, blueberry and blackberry liqueur as well as espresso roast, this is a tremendously complex blend that hits the palate with fullbodied opulence, terrific richness and intensity, and wonderfully silky tannins. The entire wine saturates the palate yet is never heavy, instead rather ethereal. This is an extraordinarily elegant, complex, yet authoritative example of a creative blend from some of the finest terroirs in all of Napa Valley, brought to life by the extraordinary passion and abilities of owners Ann Colgin and Joe Wender. If the other three wines seem to have fully matured, this wine probably won’t reach its plateau for another 2-3 years and it will keep for 15 or more.” R. Its dense color is accompanied by a big, sweet bouquet of charcoal, white chocolate, spring flowers, meaty, blueberry and blackberry fruit. 209 Colgin Cariad 2005 Napa “The blend that Colgin fashions from three vineyards owned by David Abreu (Madrona, Thorevilos and Howell Mountain) is called Cariad. The 2005 Proprietary Red Cariad consists of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot. Offering up spring flowers and garden aromas, sweet blueberry and black raspberry fruit, a touch of charcoal embers, graphite and background toast, it is fleshy and full-bodied, and again, meriting a three-digit score. This is absolutely remarkable wine. As it sat in the glass, it developed some rather compelling chocolaty, licorice undertones. This is a great classic to drink over the next 20-25 years. By the way, for those interested, the cooperage generally chosen is dominated by Taransaud barrels, but there are at least four different coopers.” R. One of the stars of the vintage, this thrilling, opaque purple-colored wine offers up sweet espresso, jus de viande, blackberry, blueberry, flower and chocolate aromas. A fabulous texture, tremendous purity, sensational brightness and authoritative flavor intensity allied to striking complexity and elegance are the signature of this creative blend from the David Abreu vineyards of Thorevilos and Madrona Ranch. An extraordinary bouquet of flowers, cedar, tobacco leaf, black currants, blueberries, chocolate, and scorched earth scents is followed by a wine of prodigious concentration, purity, depth, and sweet tannins. 218 Colgin IX Estate Red Wine 2002 Napa “Another perfect wine, which has turned out even better than I anticipated seven years ago, is the estate wine, the 2002 IX Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot from the hillsides above the winery (one of the most gorgeous vineyards I’ve ever seen in the world). Yields were a frightening one-half ton per acre. Like all of Colgin’s 2002s, as this wine sat in the glass it seemed to change and improve every 20 seconds or so. Gorgeous black/plum/purple in color, much like the Tychson Hill, it offers up a completely different set of aromatics, ranging from Asian soy to damp forest floor to hints of mountain laurel, lavender, roasted meats, a touch of pepper, and wonderfully sweet blackberry and cassis fruit. Some charcoal and subtle barbecue smoke are also present in this extraordinary statement, which has also evolved at a relatively rapid pace. It seems fully mature by most standards yet should hold at this plateau for at least a decade. What is remarkable about all of these wines is that they were aged in 100% new French oak, but the oak has gone into total hiding.” R. 222 Colgin IX Estate Red Wine 2006 Napa “From the Pritchard Hill Vineyard, the 2006 IX Proprietary Red Estate is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. The good news is that there are 1,500 cases of this cuvee. It, too, reveals the noble sweetness of tannin, the extraordinary rich, intense mouthfeel, and sumptuous aromas of flowers, burning embers, blackberries, blueberries, spice box, and cedar. With extraordinary intensity, beautiful purity, a texture and flavors that build incrementally on the palate, and a significantly long finish, this is a perfect wine.” R. These wines are macerated for 35-45 days, and given frequent pump-overs as well as punch-downs. They are aged completely in French oak. The floral-filled 2004 IX Syrah Estate (486 cases) offers super-pure blue and blackberries intermixed with hints of new saddle leather and meat. High but sweet tannins, powerful flavors, and an overall sense of poise characterize this stunning effort.” R. Parker for TWA, 96 pts. 12/06 3 bottles (owc) $300-450

224 Harlan Estate 1997 Napa “The 1997 Harlan Estate is one of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines I have ever tasted. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this enormously-endowed, profoundly rich wine must be tasted to be believed. Opaque purple-colored, it boasts spectacular, soaring aromatics of vanilla, minerals, coffee, blackberries, licorice, and cassis. In the mouth, layer after layer unfold powerfully yet gently. Acidity, tannin, and alcohol are wellbalanced by the wine’s unreal richness and singular personality. The finish exceeds one minute. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2030.” R. 225 Harlan Estate 1998 Napa “The 1998, which is a candidate for the “Wine of the Vintage,” was produced from yields of 0.9 tons per acre. There are only 1,100 cases, and it is the first Harlan Estate to be composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A spectacular achievement, it boasts an opaque plum/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of espresso, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, tobacco, licorice, Asian spice, and roasted meat smells. In the mouth, it is seamless, full-bodied, with an unctuous texture, gorgeously sweet tannin, and layer upon layer of concentration. This is a tour de force in winemaking. It is hard to believe that a wine such as this has emerged from 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2030.” R. Its dense opaque plum/purple color is accompanied by a sumptuous bouquet of graphite, camphor, creme de cassis, smoky barbecue wood and a hint of forest floor. Similar flavors hit the mouth with full-bodied splendor, a multidimensional mouthfeel and texture, and the sensational finish lasts more than 45 seconds. Some tannins are still present, and this wine seems much younger than expected at ten years of age, so give it 4-5 more years of bottle age and consume it over the following 20-25 years.” R. 229 Harlan Estate 2004 Napa “Another rating identical to that which was given in 2007 (when first tasted from bottle), the 2004 Harlan Estate is performing essentially the way I suggested in 2007 as it is one of the more precocious and accessible of the Harlan Estate wines to date. A great showing at this retrospective, this wine, which seems like a hypothetical blend of a Pauillac, St.-Estephe and Graves, represents around 1,500 cases from 40 acres of beautifully manicured hillside vineyards overlooking Oakville. Still dense purple to the rim, with notes of creme de cassis, charcoal, blackberry and sweet toast, the wine is full-bodied and voluptuously textured with the tannins largely resolved. But the density and richness suggest this wine can go a long, long way, even though the window for drinking it seems open and inviting already. A world-class, firstgrowth wine if there ever was one from Napa, this is simply an exquisite Harlan Estate that has atypically reached mid to late adolescence at the age of ten. That is great given the fact that these are 30- to 40-year wines—possibly even half-century wines. Drink it over the next 30 years.” R. Parker for TWA, 98 pts. 04/14 6 bottles (owc) $2,700-3,300 230 Harlan Estate 2005 Napa “Its bigger brother, or sister, depending on the point of view, is the extremely young, fresh, vigorous, yet still exuberant and promising 2005 Harlan Estate. Normally, the blends on these wines tend to be 85%-90% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest tiny proportions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and possibly some Petit Verdot, although I don’t recall that being a very important part of the estate vineyard. The 2005 is incredibly youthful at age ten, although certainly drinkable. And who wouldn’t consume it if they had the opportunity? It will benefit from another 5-10 years of cellaring and certainly has 30 or more years left in its evolutionary curve. Gorgeous, and tasting akin to a hypothetical Pauillac blended with a great Pessac-Léognan from Bordeaux comes to mind because of the smoky, subtle barbecue notes, fruitcake, forest floor, graphite and minerality. The wine has stunning fruit and a full-bodied, powerful richness, yet is still nimble on its feet. This is a classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon from an absolutely magnificent hillside vineyard in the Mayacamas Mountains overlooking the Oakville corridor on the valley floor. This opaque, garnet/purple wine is another tour de force and, once again, proves that Harlan Estate is not only one of the greatest wines of California, but of the world.” R. It reveals a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with a smorgasbord of spring flower, blueberry, creme de cassis, and assorted blue, black, and red fruit characteristics. It also possesses extraordinary concentration, but what sets it apart is the fragrant aromatics combined with uncommon purity and elegance for such a full-bodied, massively concentrated wine. Its perfect balance suggests it can be drunk at a relatively young age, but it should easily evolve over 30-35 years. Congratulations to all involved!” R. 239 Screaming Eagle 2001 Napa “The last time I had this wine, it seemed much more developed, youthful and approachable. This particular bottle, which was pulled from my cellar, was super-powerful, dense and concentrated, as well as structured and backward. Aeration helped somewhat, but this looks like a very long-lived wine, and my initial suggestion of an anticipated maturity date (2010-2025) should be changed to 2015-2035. Only 450 cases were made of this blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc from former proprietor Jean Phillips’ vineyards just south of the Oakville crossroads. The spectacular dense blue/purple color remains opaque. The wine displays the hallmark creme de cassis, floral and licorice notes that are so pure, vivid and intense, and which have always been part of this vineyard’s classic trademark. With great purity, a full-bodied mouthfeel and even more thickness, power and density than I remember, this wine has put on weight, developed more structure, and looks like a candidate for 30 more years of aging potential. This is a brilliant wine, much in keeping with the legendary status of this producer.” R. Parker for TWA, 99 pts. 06/11 3 bottles (owc) $4,750-6,000 240 Screaming Eagle 2002 Napa R. 242 Screaming Eagle 2004 Napa “Aged 20 months in 72% new French oak, this blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc comes from a great vineyard on the valley floor in Oakville, just south of Rudd Estate and Plumpjack. The wine’s dense ruby/purple color is followed by a beautiful, Pauillac-like (think Pontet Canet or Mouton), ethereal perfume of creme de cassis, or as Michael Broadbent used to say, “celestial black currants,” full body, a velvety texture, fine tannins, a multidimensional mouthfeel, and a terrific finish. While there were no real surprises tasting this wine, I was somewhat intrigued by just how youthful the 2004 Screaming Eagle is showing. I had expected it to reveal slightly more evolution. I thought the 13% Merlot in the blend would push the evolution more quickly. The finish lasts for a full minute. As it has been in just about every vintage, the 2004 is a profound wine. It is for others to decide if it is overpriced, but this is undeniably a great wine that competes on the world stage with the best that exist.” R. A wine that is only now beginning to shed its tannin, the 2006 stands out for its vibrancy and energy. All of the classic Screaming Eagle notes are in the glass, but with a little more edge and cut than in most vintages. Sweet red berries, crushed rocks, flowers and spice box are alive in the glass. Over time, hints of sage, mint rosemary and pencil shavings add complexity. The 2006 is a decidedly cool-weather wine with less opulence than either the 2007 or 2009, but it is absolutely singing today. Another few years will only help the wine come together even more fully, but it is impossible to miss the 2006’s utterly breathtaking beauty. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.” A. 245 Screaming Eagle 2007 Napa “As impossible as it might seem, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon takes things to another level. An exquisite, celestial bouquet melds into endless layers of fruit as this rich, voluptuous wine blossoms on the palate. Fullbodied and seductive, the 2007 conquers all of the senses with its head spinning, beautiful personality. As always, Screaming Eagle is a bit more restrained next to Napa Valley’s other heavy hitters, yet the pedigree of this opulent vintage comes through in spades. A kaleidoscope of aromas and flavors flows through to the creamy, textured finish. I have tasted the 2007 several times recently. It was always been perfect. A profound example of Chateau Latour, the full-bodied, opulent 2003 is already performing well at age eleven, which is somewhat atypical. The pH is a relatively high 3.8, which also indicates low acidity. The wine is very ripe, but not over-ripe, offers great freshness, and lots of creme de cassis and camphor as well as hints of blackberries and chocolate. After ten years in bottle, it still reveals a dense opaque purple color along with a potentially sensational bouquet of blueberries, black currants, graphite, asphalt and background oak. Extremely powerful, full-bodied and superbly concentrated with good acidity and high but round tannins, this massive La MissionHaut-Brion should take its place among this estate’s most hallowed vintages when it hits full maturity in another one to two decades. I was surprised by just how youthful this wine tasted at age 12. If tasted blind, I would have guessed it to be around 4 to 5 years old. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050.” R. 254 Chateau Lynch Bages 2009 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe “Performing even better from bottle than it did from barrel, this appears to be the finest Lynch Bages since the 2000, 1990 and 1989. According to the chateau, the 2009 has the highest level of polyphenols ever measured as well as high alcohol (nearly 13.5%). A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest largely Merlot with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive, voluptuously textured effort with unctuosity and powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry and black currant flavors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense of heaviness or fatigue. This exquisite Lynch Bages should drink well for 30+ years.” R. It’s aged 20 months in 100% new Darnajou barrels. The good news is there are 520 cases of it. Just a prodigious wine, this spectacular Cabernet Sauvignon is inky bluish/purple with a gorgeous nose of spring flowers, blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit, a touch of background toast and graphite. 336 Sine Qua Non Next of Kyn No. 6 Cumulus Vineyard Syrah 2012 CA “A wine that flirts with perfection, the 2012 Cumulus Vineyard #6 is an interesting blend of 38% Syrah, 37% Grenache, 17.4% Petite Sirah and the rest Mourvedre that saw 33 months in 54% new French oak. There’s a tiny 191 cases made, and it’s one of the most singular, exotic wines I’ve tasted. Spice, cedar, chocolate, exotic flowers and an assortment of dark fruits all emerge from this full-bodied, layered blend that hits the palate with serious richness and depth. Yet, like all truly great wines, it’s light, ethereal and never, ever heavy. There’s big structure here as well, so forget bottles for 3-4 years and enjoy over the following 15+ years.” J. 357 Chateau Margaux 2005 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe “The first-growth 2005 Château Margaux (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot), a lavish fragrance of blackcurrants, velvety new saddle leather, spring flowers and spice soars from the glass. The wood is already totally concealed beneath the cascade of fruit in this medium to full-bodied, pure and majestic wine. This concentrated, dense, but nevertheless strikingly elegant, multi-layered wine has a finish of 45+ seconds. It builds incrementally to a crescendo and finale. A broodingly dense, thick, unctuously textured, inky/plum/garnet/ purple color offers up scents of beef blood, steak tartare, cassis, herbs, tobacco, and underbrush. One of the most concentrated wines of the vintage (as well as one of the most concentrated Bordeaux’s I have ever tasted), it is a huge, full-bodied, weighty, rich wine whose tannins are getting silkier and silkier. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life. This behemoth is a singularly profound example of Gruaud Larose that continues to justify its legendary status.” R. 362 Chateau Leoville Las Cases 1986 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe u: two into neck, two bottom neck, one nicked capsule “The late Michel Delon always thought that this was the greatest vintage he had produced. We often tasted it side by side with the 1982, because I always preferred the latter vintage. Of course, the two vintages are quite different in style, with the 1986 a monument to classicism, with great tannin, extraordinary delineation, and a huge, full-bodied nose of sweet, ripe cassis fruit intermixed with vanilla, melon, fruitcake, and a multitude of spices. The wine has always been phenomenally concentrated, yet wonderfully fresh and vigorous. The wine still seems young, yet it is hard to believe it is not close to full maturity. It is a great example of Leoville Las Cases, and another compelling reason to take a serious look at the top Cabernet Sauvignon-based Medocs of 1986. Anticipated maturity: 20052035.” R. Full-bodied, dense purple in color, with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, cassis, graphite and spring flowers, this full-bodied, legendary effort is long and opulent, with wonderfully abundant yet sweet tannin, a skyscraper-like mid-palate and a thrilling, nearly one-minute finish. This spectacular effort from Poyferre that should drink well for 30+ years.” R. 365 Chateau Pichon Baron 2008 Pauillac, 2eme Cru Classe “A sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 Pichon Longueville Baron is one of the densest, most concentrated wines of Pauillac in 2008. An inky/purple color is followed by aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, blackberries, charcoal, coffee and licorice. Exceptionally full-bodied with velvety tannins and undeniable appeal, this gorgeous, well-proportioned, larger than life 2008 should age effortlessly for two decades or more. With the realistic pricing that remains for many 2008s, this is a nobrainer.” R. Parker for TWA, 95 pts. 05/11 12 bottles $900-1,200 366 Chateau La Lagune 2009 Haut Medoc, 3eme Cru Classe “It is not unusual that the 2009 La Lagune is a spectacular effort given the fact that this estate has been making terrific wines over the last decade or more. It boasts a dense purple color as well as a beautiful perfume of blueberries, mulberries, cassis, white chocolate and subtle toasty oak. Notes of Chinese black tea, cedarwood and forest floor also make an appearance in the singular aromatic and flavor profiles. This sumptuous, full-bodied La Lagune possesses low acidity, abundant but ripe, sweet tannin and a long, 45-second finish. Give this beauty 5-7 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades.” R. This wine, which emerges from largely pre-phylloxera vines planted on the dome of Hermitage, adjacent to the chapel that is perched there so photogenically, possesses extraordinary finesse and elegance. It reveals notes of liquid minerals intermixed with kirsch liqueur and blackberries. While it never possesses the power and breadth of flavor of Le Meal or Le Pavillon, l’Ermite appears to be a hypothetical blend of Bordeaux’s Lafleur and Ausone as it always displays a certain austerity early in life. The extraordinary 2000 flirts with perfection. A provocative wine with great minerality, finesse, and delineation, it blew me away when I tasted it from bottle.” R. This inky/ruby/purple-colored cuvee offers a classic Beaucastel bouquet of new saddle leather, cigar smoke, roasted herbs, black truffles, underbrush, and blackberry as well as cherry fruit. It is a superb, earthy expression of this Mourvedre-dominated cuvee. Full-bodied and powerful, it will undoubtedly close down over the next several years, not to re-emerge for 7-8 years. 390 Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Il Greppo 2010 Tuscany “Biondi-Santi is a benchmark for great Brunello. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Annata does a great job of presenting classic Sangiovese characteristics in the context of a classic vintage. This wine shows extreme finesse and elegance with a silky approach that is nudged gently forward by delicate tones of wild berry, dried blueberry, pressed rose, wet earth, grilled herb and toasted almond. The acidity is beautifully balanced and the tannins are firm but silky. This wine benefits from the right DNA for long aging potential.” M. 398 Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli 2006 Tuscany “The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is huge, powerful and totally implosive. The seductive allure of the 2007 is nowhere to be found. Instead, the 2006 is built on a serious spine of formidable tannin and dark red/black fruit. Hints of tar, licorice, rose petals and tobacco inform the powerful, virile finish. The 2006 is going to require considerable patience, but it is clearly a jewel of a wine, even at this early stage. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color as well as a sumptuous perfume of barbecue smoke, lead pencil shavings and wet rocks. This ripe, smoky, intense, fullbodied wine reveals a boatload of tannins, but also richer fruit and a deeper, multidimensional mouthfeel and finish than the 2009, which appears to be more broodingly backward and structured. This appears to be a great success. Consume it over the next 25-30 years.” R. Parker for TWA, (94-97) pts. 10/13 2 bottles $500-600

413 Ovid 2009 Napa “The 2009 Ovid is stunningly beautiful. At times it shows a little more depth, power and richness than the Hexameter, but both wines are compelling. Endless layers of fruit saturate the palate as this rich, intense wine conquers the heart and intellect. A totally vivid wine, the 2009 is even more impressive from bottle than it was from barrel. Over the time I followed it, the 2009 gained finesse and elegance in the glass, which bodes quite well for the future. Intense graphite, crushed rocks and pencil shaving nuances add energy to the polished, huge finish. The blend is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. 416 Phelps Insignia 2010 Napa “A gorgeously intense bouquet of lead pencil shavings, spring flowers, black currants, blackberries, and subtle smoke and foresty aromas jumps from the glass of this fullbodied, rich, concentrated wine with soft tannins, a multidimensional mouthfeel, and a long, rich finish displaying well-integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood. This beauty is one of the top Insignias produced over recent years. It should age easily for 20+ years.” R. Parker for TWA, 95 pts. 11/13 5 bottles $550-800 417 Ridge Monte Bello 2008 Central Coast “The 2008 Monte Bello is striking. It is a decidedly muscular Monte Bello endowed with layers of dark fruit. Tobacco, mint, asphalt and crushed rocks develop in the glass, adding tons of complexity and finesse. A long, saline finish rounds things out beautifully. In 2008 the cold growing season stretched into October and the wine definitely has the feel of a cool vintage. The spring frost and the second year of drought conditions lowered yields significantly. Yields were just 1.25 tons per acre on average, but some of the older vineyards came in at less than 1 ton per acre. The balance of fruit, tannin and structure is simply extraordinary, but the wine needs time, most likely lots of it. In 2008 the blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.” A. Galloni for TWA, 97+ pts. 08/11 10 bottles $1,000-1,500 418 Ridge Monte Bello 2009 Central Coast “The 2009 Monte Bello ,72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot is simply magnificent. Layers of dark red fruit, flowers, spices and graphite are all woven together in this utterly impeccable wine. The 2009 is an especially huge, intense Monte Bello, yet a sexy, silky core of fruit lies within its imposing frame. Everything comes together in this glorious, radiant wine. Last year the 2009 had some pretty stiff competition from the 2010, but today it is simply firing on all cylinders. Eric Baugher describes 2009 as a year with cold weather early on, followed by heat in early June and July. The fruit was brought in on October 12, just before an intense downpour swept through the region. There is a purity and silkiness supported by structure in the 2009 that is impossible not to admire. Simply put, this is another utterly magnificent, towering masterpiece from Ridge. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2049.” A. Galloni for TWA, 98 pts. 08/12 6 bottles $750-1,100

It is clear that after 1991, the Shafers and Elias Fernandez were entering a dramatic new level of quality as the Hillside Select cuvée had become a worldclass effort. This beauty is just becoming fully drinkable and should continue to provide immense enjoyment over the next 20 years.” R. Parker for TWA, 95 pts. 12/14 6 bottles $1,000-1,500

421 Shafer Hillside Select 2007 Napa “One of the perfect wines from Shafer is the 2007 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select. Think it over – in the first decade of the 21st century, Shafer scored three perfect scores and two 99s – that’s about as high a praise as I can give any producer in the world. Opaque purple in color, the 2007 has a stunning nose of sweet crème de cassis, black cherries, licorice, and toasty oak, a multilayered, full-throttle personality, and a texture that builds and builds. Great purity, fabulous fruit intensity and a richness without heaviness characterize this massive, prodigious effort from Shafer. It’s still very young, despite this vintage, which seems to be maturing precociously. I don’t believe this wine will hit its stride for at least another 5-10 years and drink well for at least 2-3 decades.” R. A blend of 96% Syrah, 3% Roussanne and 1% Viognier, it was fermented with 16% whole cluster before spending just under 42 months in 100% new French oak. It offers an incredible array of sweet dark fruits, cassis, white chocolate, licorice and hints of bacon fat that meld perfectly with its full-bodied, seamless, layered and impeccably puttogether palate. Given the wealth of fruit here, it’s amazing how this stays light, graceful and elegant, without ever seeming over the top in any way. While there’s no shortage of tannin here, they’re sweet and integrated, so feel free to enjoy this rock-star effort anytime over the coming two decades or more.” J. Structurally, it is similar to the Piggott Range, revealing abundant amounts of sweet, ripe tannin, and huge extract, richness, and depth. Meant for true connoisseurs who are willing to forget it for 5-8 years, it represents what Roman Bratasiuk and Clarendon Hills do so well...show respect for the great traditions of France, but recognize the extraordinary raw materials that emerge from old vines planted in McLaren Vale. This fabulous wine offers both power and elegance, and showcases the extraordinary talent of Roman Bratasiuk.” R. Parker for TWA, 99 pts. 10/05 4 bottles $400-600

In any event, and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 3. All property is sold “as is,” and neither Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation or any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, or description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice, or in the catalog, or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability. Ullage (Level of Wine) Illustration and Interpretations For Bordeaux, Port, and other shouldered bottles n. bn. vts. ts. hs. ms. lms. s.

ullage is into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder; usual level for Bordeaux older than 15 yrs high shoulder; usual cork reduction, often found in Bordeaux over 20 yrs, low risk mid shoulder; variation likely as indicates cork deterioration low mid shoulder; some risks, reflected in estimates shoulder; risky, reflected in estimates into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder high shoulder mid shoulder low mid shoulder shoulder

Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted. Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 20 years. Bidders with specific condition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots. Bordeaux wines are cataloged referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloging reflects the practice of granting it 1er Cru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottled unless otherwise stated. It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening of banded cases will be determined on an individual basis. For Burgundy, German wines and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimeters from cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm. Bottle Sizes bottle (750 ml) magnum (2xbt) marie jeanne (3xbt) double magnum (4xbt)

jeroboam (4xbt); Burgundy, Champagne jeroboam (6xbt); Bordeaux imperiale (8xbt); Bordeaux methuselah (8xbt); Burgundy

demi bottle (demi) split (1/4 bottle) Champagne

Buyers’ Caution: Levels are as when cataloged; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occur during storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine. Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions. Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on. Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful), until the flight concludes. Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you dispose of it.
