Ellie Hoover Walker, 1924-2015

This catalog presents the personal, lifetime collection of Eleanor Hoover Walker, who passed away peacefully last February in her Hudson, Ohio, home. Ellie started collecting antiques in the late 1950s, upon the suggestion of her homebuilder in North Canton, Ohio. She sought the advice of Adelaide Briggs of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, who subsequently accompanied her and her friends on frequent shopping trips “out east.” Born and raised in Massachusetts, Ellie especially enjoyed New England antiques, venues, and traditions. Due to the proximity of Pennsylvania, and the numerous friends and dealers she visited there, she became fond of the Pennsylvania German culture, and gravitated heavily toward its old traditions, decorative arts, and folk arts. Over 55 years, Ellie became an avid antique collector and dealer, well-known for her expertise in early American and Pennsylvania German furnishings and art. Ellie traveled throughout the Midwest and Northeast to participate in antique shows and to visit established dealers. Ellie had many friends and associates all over the country, and she enjoyed the social aspects of the business, whether it be related to dealing, trading or collecting. Much of what she learned about antiques was gleaned over the dinner table with friends or from chatting at length with experienced dealers. She looked for “only the best quality” examples that might fit into her select collection, using her tasteful eye, keen knowledge and savvy experience. When not antiquing, she could be found in her kitchen, preparing a meal for family and friends, or in her garden, which she designed and tended with loving care. She also enjoyed traveling with friends and her husband of 25 years, Captain Lewis W. Walker Jr. Ellie was a delightful person, having a vast knowledge of varied aspects of life. She read voraciously and always had a crossword puzzle at hand. She had a great sense of humor and a loving, generous and caring way toward her family and friends. She was a selfless teacher to all. This catalog is a tribute to Ellie and her love of antique furnishings and art.

—Captain Lewis W. Walker Jr. and the Hoover Family
