The 1999 Ermitage l’Ermite is a liquid mineral, crystalline expression. It is the essence of its grape as well as terroir. It may be the greatest expression of terroir I have seen outside of a handful of Alsatian Rieslings (Clos Ste. Hune comes to mind). It has that transparent character that terroiristes talk more about than actually recognize. Drinking it is like consuming a liquefied stony concoction mixed with white flowers, licorice, and honeyed fruits. It is frightfully pure, dense, and well-delineated. As I said last year, “There is no real fruit character, just glycerin, alcohol, and liquid stones.” That’s about it, but, wow, what an expression! Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050. This is for the connoisseur of rare wines. Along with Gerard and Jean-Louis Chave, Chapoutier is producing the finest expressions of white Hermitage. His single vineyard cuvees are to die for if you like these eccentric, idiosyncratic, mammoth dry whites.” R. 39 Chateau Montrose 2009 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “A colossal effort, the 2009 Montrose represents a hypothetical blend of the monumental duo of 1989 and 1990 combined with the phenomenal 2003. With 13.7% alcohol (an all-time high at Montrose), it is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and the rest tiny quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Some structure and minerality can be detected in the background, but the overall impression is one of massive blackberry, black currant and mulberry fruit intermixed with forest floor, damp earth, crushed rocks and a hint of spring flowers. Full-bodied with sweet but abundant tannin, Jean-Bernard Delmas believes this is the greatest wine he has made during his short tenure at Montrose since retiring from HautBrion. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest largely Merlot with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive, voluptuously textured effort with unctuosity and powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry and black currant flavors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense of heaviness or fatigue. The palate is very dry, very tight and seems to be restraining an explosion of fruit and autolytic expression. Crisp acidity and very fine bubbles. Very long minerally finish.” L. 55 Louis Roederer Cristal 2002 Champagne “Roederer’s 2002 Cristal is still in its infant, fresh stage. Subtle notes of pears, flowers, spices, mint, minerals and oak are woven into a cashmere-like frame of extraordinary grace and elegance. This beautifully sculpted Champagne possesses notable clarity but with the additional depth of fruit that is characteristic of this vintage. It is a gorgeous, seductive Cristal of the highest level. In 2002, Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay with 10 grams of dosage. 20% of the wine was fermented in oak. This is Lot: L030351A107809. This bottle was disgorged in June 28th, 2007.” A. 57 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 1995 Reims “The 1995 Comtes de Champagne (original release), on the other hand, shows fantastic intensity in its freshly cut flowers, citrus and spices. Endlessly layered and perfumed, the 1995 reveals gorgeous richness and intensity wrapped around an intense, mineral-driven frame. 58 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2003 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “A modern day version of the 1959 Lafite, the 2003 Lafite Rothschild was bottled in mid-May, 2005 after achieving 12.9% natural alcohol – hardly an astonishing figure given the vintage’s weather conditions. A combination of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, it represents a ripe version of the essence of Lafite-Rothschild. Dense purple-colored, with classic notes of graphite intertwined with melted licorice, crème de cassis, smoke, and flowers, it reveals extraordinary richness, opulence, power, purity, intensity, and viscosity. Whether this wine will close down or not is questionable as it is somewhat atypical given its sweetness and softness. Analytically, there are extremely high tannins, which I suspect will assert themselves in the future. Production in 2003 was less than half of normal.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/06 6 bottles (owc) $4,000-6,000 59 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2006 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “One of the fabulous surprises, although I had suggested last year that it could jump in quality, of my tastings, the 2006 Lafite Rothschild is a great, great wine made from a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. When I tasted it from barrel, it reminded me of their successful 1988, but it is dramatically superior to that vintage. Frankly, it may turn out to be as good as the 2005, which in all of Bordeaux is a far greater vintage than 2006. Lafite’s severe selection process (42% made it into the grand vin) resulted in a full-bodied wine boasting an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, truffles, lead pencil shavings, and sensationally sweet, ripe black currant and cedar notes. A wine of extraordinary intensity, texture, and depth with silky tannins as well as awesome concentration, this has turned out to be a remarkable Lafite Rothschild that should be drinkable much earlier than the 2005, but age for three decades.” R. 60 Chateau Margaux 2005 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe “Another celestial effort from Paul Pontallier and Corinne Mentzelopoulus, the 2005 Margaux, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, boasts a dense opaque blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, crème de cassis, licorice, and, despite its having spent two years in 100% new wood, only a subtle touch of toasty oak. Although full-bodied, the wine seems light on its feet because of the silky tannins as well as the great gravel terroir from which it comes. Beautiful purity, length, and nobility define this modern day classic. Is it better than the 2000, 1996, 1990, or some of the vintages from the decade of the eighties? Who knows, but it is unquestionably one of the all-time great wines made at Chateau Margaux. This estate has produced only exceptional wines over the last three decades. The seamlessness of the 2005 suggests it will perform well early, but it should last for a half century or more.” R. Parker, 98+ pts. 04/08 6 bottles (owc) $3,000-4,250 61 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2006 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “A sensational effort, the 2006 Mouton Rothschild exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a classic Mouton perfume of crème de cassis, flowers, blueberries, and only a hint of oak. Dalhuin told me that in whisky barreltasting vintages such as 1989 and 1990, Mouton was aged in heavily toasted barrels, and they have backed off to a much lighter toast for the barrels’ interior. I think this has worked fabulously well with the cassis quality fruit they get from their Cabernet Sauvignon. The full-bodied, powerful 2006 possesses extraordinary purity and clarity. A large-scaled, massive Mouton Rothschild that ranks as one of the top four or five wines of the vintage, it may turn out to be the longest-lived wine of the vintage by a landslide. The label will undoubtedly be controversial as a relative of Sigmund Freud, Lucian Freud, has painted a rather comical Zebra staring aimlessly at what appears to be a palm tree in the middle of a stark courtyard. I suppose a psychiatrist could figure out the relationship between that artwork and wine, but I couldn’t see one. This utterly profound Mouton will need to sleep for 15+ years before it will reveal any secondary nuances, but it is a packed and stacked firstgrowth Pauillac of enormous potential.” R. Chateau Cos d’Estournel sits atop a hillside, the pinnacle of St. Estephe. The exoticism of India, from the Taj style of its outward architectural elements to the elephants flanking the Chateau’s wine archives hints at the perfume of its wines. Cos was in the vanguard of the continuing Bordeaux modernization of cellar design and vinicultural methods, using a gravity driven process to allow Cos’s terroir to unfold, drawing out its signature heady exotic spice, in wines of incredible finesse and supple balance. –MK 62 Chateau Cos d’Estournel 2003 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “The prodigious, fantastic 2003 Cos d’Estournel is a candidate for “wine of the vintage.” A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon (unusually high for this chateau), 30% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, 17,500 cases were produced from low yields. An inky/blue/ purple color is accompanied by a compelling perfume of black fruits, subtle smoke, pain grille, incense, and flowers. With extraordinary richness, full body, and remarkable freshness, elegance, and persistence, this is one of the finest wines ever made by this estate. The good news is that it will be drinkable at a young age yet evolve for three decades or more.” R. This superb, huge, ripe wine is one of the vintage’s most prodigious offerings. However, patience will be essential for anyone purchasing this 2003.” R. 106 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape 2007 Southern Rhone “Paul Avril was a bigger-than-life vigneron, a visionary, and a great teacher, but Vincent has been in charge for a number of years, and he has rewarded his father with what I believe is the greatest Chateauneuf du Pape made since 1978 and 1990, the 2007. I have not only tasted this wine at the estate, but I purchased it for my cellar, and have now drunk it on three separate occasions out of bottle. It is unquestionably one of the great Chateauneufs of my lifetime, and I suspect it will merit a three digit score after another 3-4 years of cellaring. The blend is generally 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, and the rest small amounts of Muscardin, Vaccarese, Counoise, and Syrah. It exhibits what is probably the deepest color I have ever seen here, and the finished alcohol is a high (for Clos des Papes) 15.5%. Still slightly restrained because of its recent bottling, but wow, what potential complexity, mind-boggling richness, and compelling flavor profile are apparent. It is a sublime expression of the art of winemaking as evidenced by its dense purple color and big, sweet kiss of kirsch, framboise, blackberries, licorice, roasted herbs, and smoked meat. It hits the palate with a fascinating combination of substance, power, full-bodied authority yet extraordinary freshness, elegance, and precision. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and watch it unleash its glory over the next three decades. Normally a blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Mourvedre, the 2007’s composition changed to 80% Grenache (all aged in tank) and 20% Mourvedre (aged in small oak barrels.) This wine literally blew me away. Since this is a PG-rated publication, I can not print my original comments upon tasting this wine. Let’s just say the exquisite aromatics were astounding. They include crème de cassis, lavender, roasted meats, new saddle leather, and spice box. The phenomenal aromatics were matched by equally compelling flavors, texture, and purity. Offering a thrill a second, this full-bodied wine exhibits awesome concentration, impeccable balance, and a finish that lasts nearly 60 seconds. I had a difficult time spitting out this amazing elixir, and I kept returning to it during the course of the morning tasting just to confirm my initial impression. The good news is about 500 cases were produced. It should drink well for two decades or more.” R. The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo has distanced itself ever so slightly from the 2003 Cuvee Reservee. Before bottling and immediately after bottling, these two wines’ differences were not as evident. At present the Capo reveals that extra level of flavor, power, complexity and richness. It is a big wine (16.1% alcohol – less than in the 1998, but more than in the 2000 and 2007) boasting a dark plum/garnet color as well as a stunning bouquet of aged beef intermixed with pepper, herbes de Provence, and steak au poivre. This unctuously textured, full-bodied Chateauneuf possesses enormous body, huge flavors and sweet, velvety tannins. Still youthful, it has not yet begun to close down, and I’m not sure it ever will given this unusual vintage. I remember first tasting it from a large tank as it was still fermenting and it was already impressive! It is a full-bodied, powerful wine that must tip the scales at close to 15.5% natural alcohol. 132 Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 2007 Piedmont “The 2007 Barolo Monprivato is stunningly beautiful. Monprivato is seldom this rich when it is young. It is most often intensely aromatic, mid-weight and frequently out of balance, especially right after bottling. The 2007 is none of those things. It is a rich, dramatic wine endowed with tons of fruit and a sweeping, enveloping personality. It is also primary and at the beginning of what is likely to be a long, long life. Despite its seeming fragility, Monprivato is one of the most long-lived of all Baroli, even in its weakest vintages. The 2007 is spectacular, but it is very, very young and in need of significant cellaring to shed some its baby fat. Purists may prefer the 2006. I have not tasted both wines side by side from bottle, but 10 years from now it won’t matter. Readers will be thrilled to own either. In 2007 Mascarello opted not to bottle his Riserva Ca’ d’Morissio as he didn’t think there was a huge difference between the Riserva and the straight Monprivato. I guess we will never know for sure, although my barrel tastings have always suggested otherwise. In any event, savvy readers know what happens when there is no Ca’ d’Morissio in a good to great vintage. Recent examples include the 1999 and 2005. The following two lots are consigned directly from the cellars of The Bruery. Founded in 2008 by Patrick Rue, the Bruery focuses on Belgian-inspired ales with a distinctly American bent. All beers are offered in 750ml format and eschew forcecarbonation in favor of bottle conditioning. Constantly experimenting and never satisfied, the Bruery has developed dozens of recipes on their own and in collaboration with other breweries (and wineries) ranging from pale ales to wild ales to barrel aged stouts. The first lot offered contains a bottle of Batch 1: Levud’s, the first beer released by the Bruery and the winner of a homebrew competition held by the Bruery to determine their first batch. Accompanying Batch 1 are five bottles of the Anniversary Old Ales. Each year is named after traditional anniversary gifts (paper, cotton, leather, fruit and wood) and is produced in a traditional solera style. Over the years, the beer has developed complex layers as older batches are blended with new and aged in a variety of former spirit casks. The second lot includes twelve bottles centered around what is likely the Bruery’s most popular offering: Black Tuesday. Offered once annually on the last Tuesday of October, Black Tuesday is both an homage to the stock market crash of 1929 and a behemoth of a beer – a Russian Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels and every release has been over 18% alcohol by volume. Included here are four vintages of Black Tuesday and eight beers that offer Black Tuesday with a twist, either blended with other Bruery beers or aged with cacao nibs, hazelnuts, coffee or even Syrah grapes from the nearby Los Olivos vineyard.

472 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild is unquestionably this renowned estate’s greatest wine. As I indicated last year, only 38% of the crop was deemed grand enough to be put into the final blend, which is atypically high in Cabernet Sauvignon (83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot). This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaled Lafite I have ever tasted. It will require many years to come around, so I suspect all of us past the age of fifty might want to give serious consideration as to whether we should be laying away multiple cases of this wine. It is also the first Lafite-Rothschild to be put into a new engraved bottle (designed to prevent fraudulent imitations). The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knockout nose of lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents. Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract and richness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. Leoville Las Cases (LLC) is a St. Julien in name only—that not there is anything wrong with that. This wine is generally quite well-endowed and possessing dramatic depth. This final collection in the auction represents a great opportunity for the curious consumer of wines. These bottles were present in the cellar of a building that experienced a fire on the third floor and was contained well before affecting other areas of the building. Nonetheless, the bottles all bear stickers stating “This bottle has been exposed to a fire and subsequently sanitized.” Several bottles were sampled from this collection, none showing any signs of heat damage. Skinner, Inc. & Lower Falls Wine Co. Conditions of Sale – Fine Wines Auction 1. All bidders and buyers of wine must be at least 21 years of age and shall present satisfying legal documentation of this at auction. In the event the buyer is a partnership or corporate entity, the receiver of the wine shall furnish proof fulfilling this criteria. 2. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc., below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event, and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 3. All property is sold “as is,” and neither Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation or any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, or description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice, or in the catalog, or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability. Prospective buyers are urged to inspect those lots they have interest in. 4. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by Skinner, Inc. shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale. The auctioneer shall have sole discretion to refuse any bid, or refuse to acknowledge any bidder. Please note Massachusetts state law requires all purchasers of alcoholic beverages be at least 21 years of age. Any bidder that plans on spending in excess of $100,000 should make arrangements with the accounting department at least five (5) days in advance of the sale, as a deposit may be required to participate. 5. All merchandise purchased is payable directly to Skinner Inc., and must be paid for the day of the auction. All merchandise must be removed from Lower Falls Wine Co. within forty five (45) days of the auction, and in no event shall Skinner Inc. or Lower Falls Wine Co. have any liability for any damage to property left on its premises for more than fourteen (14) days after the sale. Lower Falls Wine Co. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage fee per lot as determined by Lower Falls Wine Co. (see Collection of Wines). If any property has not been removed within forty five (45) days from the date of sale, at the option of Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. (a) the merchandise may be transferred to and stored at a bonded warehouse and the purchaser agrees to pay all transfer and storage expenses, and/or (b) Skinner Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. may place the merchandise in a subsequent auction, without Reserve, to be sold to the highest bidder, and after deducting the standard commission and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds to the purchaser. 6. Acceptable forms of payment are cash, good check, or wire transfers, payable in U.S. dollars. Checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing the check. Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. reserve the right to hold merchandise purchased until the funds have cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner and/or Lower Falls Wine Co. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. 7. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Skinner Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has breached any of its obligations, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale. 8. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser for such item. 9. Lower Falls Wine Co. may, in their discretion and at purchaser’s request, package and arrange for delivery as directed by the purchaser. In such event, purchaser agrees that (a) all such packaging, handling and delivery is at the sole risk of the purchaser and that Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. shall have no liability for any loss or damage to such items, and (b) purchaser shall pay in advance, all packaging expenses, including labor, materials, carriers fees and all insurance charges. Please arrange seventy-two (72) hours in advance for collection and delivery. Purchaser shall make itself aware of the limitations and restrictions imposed by various states in regards to the transportation and importation of alcoholic beverages and purchaser has the sole responsibility to research and comply with all permit and licensing requirements. Neither Skinner, Inc. nor Lower Falls Wine Co. shall be responsible for obtaining any permits or licenses on behalf of purchaser and no sale shall be cancelled or refunded for lack of purchaser’s noncompliance with permitting and licensing issues. A premium equal to 23% of the final bid price up to and including $100,000, plus 20% of the final bid price from $100,001 up to and including $1,000,000, plus 12% of the final bid price from $1,000,001 and over will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. 11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms printed within, posted, and announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid. 12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalog. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalog, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent. 13. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law). The buyer/ bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any federal court sitting therein. Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted. Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 20 years. Bidders with specific condition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots. Bordeaux wines are catalogued referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloguing reflects the practice of granting it 1er Cru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. Buyersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Caution: Levels are as when catalogued; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occur during storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine. Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions. Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on. Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you dispose of it.

The inherent nature of fine wineâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;particularly aged bottlesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;requires that due care be taken in its storage and transport. We request your partnership in making sure no harm arises during storage, collection or transportation. We may offer suggestions as to the best course of action to safeguard your purchase. Issues with Regard to Transportation All bidders should make themselves aware of the limitations and restrictions imposed by various states with regard to the importation of alcoholic beverages which have been purchased at auction and transported into any states jurisdiction. All buyers have the sole responsibility to research, understand and comply with all permit or license requirements before collection or transport of purchases occurs. Neither Skinner Inc. nor Lower Falls Wine Co. is responsible for obtaining any permits or licenses on behalf of any bidder. Lower Falls Wine will facilitate, where able, in the making of arrangements for the buyer on their behalf. Local Delivery Lower Falls Wine Co. will deliver for a fee inside Route 495. One case, $29 Two to four cases, $19 per case Five or more cases, $14 per case Buyers arranging Massachusetts delivery outside of Route 495 should inquire as to the fees for delivery. Deliveries are made Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Delivery will usually occur within one week of your request. All fees associated with delivery must be paid in advance of delivery. We reserve the right to (re)package wines if deemed necessary for a nominal fee. Wines will only be delivered to, and must be signed for by, someone over 21 years of age.

Splits Any lot that is split for either pick-up or delivery will be subject to a nominal charge.

Storage Complimentary storage of any purchases will not exceed forty-five days past the auction date. All uncollected lots will be charged $100 per month (or fraction thereof). Purchases in excess of ten lots will be subject to a fee of a minimum of $250 per month. Lower Falls Wine Co. will not be liable for wines fourteen (14) days after auction date.
