Bordeaux collected while this Massachusettsbased collector traveled extensively. Stored in ideal cellar conditions. 7 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1998 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe R. Parker, 98 pts. 04/01 2 bottles $1,000-1,500

8 Chateau Margaux 1986 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: all bottom neck or better, signs of possible seepage to all, light bin soil R. Parker, 98 pts. 01/03 3 bottles $900-1,400 9 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1986 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “Deep garnet-black colour. An incredible array of aromas on the nose: blackberry, black cherry, tobacco, espresso, leather, black olive and loam. The palate is absolutely seamless from first impression to finish, effortlessly building layers of complexity in the mouth and leading to a very long, earth and spice finish. I can’t see how this could possibly be improvement so have no alternative but concede perfection.” L. Perrotti-Brown for R. Parker, 100 pts. 05/09 2 bottles $1,000-1,400 10 Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1986 Pessac Leognan, Cru Classe u: into neck, one capsule nick 1 bottle $150-250

The visually stunning Pichon Longueville could serve as the post-card-image one conjures up when imaging a chateau in France. A Second Growth for certain, but given Pichon’s lofty neighbors, their competitive juices must be constantly flowing. An intriguing aspect with many these older, established estates is how rigorously they embrace modernity—one could be forgiven for erroneously assuming that time has stopped inside the front door. In Pichon’s case, it was the first property to attain the ISO 14001 standard in the entire Bordeaux region! –PhM 11 Chateau Pichon Longueville Lalande 2000 Pauillac, 2eme Cru Classe R. Parker, 96 pts. 06/10 8 bottles $1,200-1,800 12 Chateau Talbot 1986 St. Julien, 4eme Cru Classe u: very top shoulder or better, light staining to two labels R. Parker, 96 pts. 01/03 7 bottles $600-900

13 Chateau d’Yquem 1976 (1 demi) top shoulder, label partially unaffixed, light bin soil 1986 (1 demi) very top shoulder 1988 (1 bt) bottom neck Sauternes 2 demi bottles 1 bottle $500-750 14 Chateau Rieussec 1983 (2 bts) very top shoulder, light bin soil 1986 (4 bts) bottom neck or better, labels partially unaffixed, light bin soil Sauternes 6 bottles $250-350 15 Antinori Guado al Tasso 1997 Tuscany light bin soil 8 bottles $475-725 16 D’Oliveiras Terrentez Reserva 1977 Madeira u: into neck 1 bottle $60-90 17 Penfolds Grange Hermitage 1982 Southern Australia u: very top shoulder or better, light bin soil “The 1982 is another superb example of that. One of the jammiest, most precocious Granges when it was released, it has never gone through a closed stage and continues to drink beautifully. A full-bodied, opulent Grange, it reveals an inky/purple color to the rim as well as a beautiful nose of crushed blueberries, blackberries, smoke, toast, roasted herbs, and road tar. This dense, plush, expansive, seamless, seductive 1982 has not changed much since I had it nearly a decade ago.” R. Parker, 97 pts. 06/09 3 bottles $750-1,100 18 Penfolds Grange Hermitage 1986 (1 bt) into neck, light bin soil, label scuff 1993 (1 bt) into neck, label tear Southern Australia 2 bottles $450-650

A discerning collector, a wonderful cellar. Here, some gems including three outstanding bottles worthy of their accolades. Look ahead to Pappy Van Winkle’s 20- and 23-year, lots 191 and 192, also from this cellar. Removed by Skinner staff from custom climate-controlled conditions. 29 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2004 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe 12 bottles $3,500-5,000 30 Chapoutier l’Ermite Blanc 1999 Northern Rhone “This is one of the greatest dry white wines I have ever tasted. The 1999 Ermitage l’Ermite is a liquid mineral, crystalline expression. It is the essence of its grape as well as terroir. It may be the greatest expression of terroir I have seen outside of a handful of Alsatian Rieslings (Clos Ste. Hune comes to mind). It has that transparent character that terroiristes talk more about than actually recognize. Drinking it is like consuming a liquefied stony concoction mixed with white flowers, licorice, and honeyed fruits. It is frightfully pure, dense, and well-delineated. As I said last year, “There is no real fruit character, just glycerin, alcohol, and liquid stones.” That’s about it, but, wow, what an expression! Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050. This is for the connoisseur of rare wines. Along with Gerard and Jean-Louis Chave, Chapoutier is producing the finest expressions of white Hermitage. His single vineyard cuvees are to die for if you like these eccentric, idiosyncratic, mammoth dry whites.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/02 1 bottle $200-300 31 Artadi El Pison 2004 Rioja “The 2004 El Pison stands out from its peers. It has a deeper color than the 2007 with a splendid nose that jumps from the glass. Notes of espresso, balsamic, Asian spices, pain grille, mineral, and black cherry lead to a velvety, mouth-filling, deep wine that effortlessly combines elegance with power. It should easily drink well for another 30-40 years. It simply does not get any better.” J. Miller for R. Parker, 100 pts. 06/10 1 bottle $300-400

32 Romano dal Forno Vigneto di Monte Lodoletta Recioto della Valpolicella 1997 Veneto one lightly scuffed label 3 demi bottles $450-600 33 Penfolds Grange 1994 1995 1997 1998 South Australia 4 bottles $1,000-1,500 34 Sloan Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Napa “The 2007 Sloan, now in bottle, has lived up to the extraordinary quality it exhibited from barrel. A world-class, perfumed nose of charcoal, espresso roast, white chocolate, black currants, sweet plums, Asian soy and a Grave-like scorched earth aroma soars from the glass of this dense purple-colored wine. Full-bodied and seamlessly constructed with a multidimensional mouthfeel as well as a phenomenal finish, this 2007 carries considerable tannin, but at present it is concealed by the wine’s luxurious levels of fruit, glycerin and intensity. This spectacular 2007 should drink well for 25-30+ years.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 120/10 1 bottle $500-700

The property of two keen-eyed collectors: here, parting with large format Bordeaux, with some Napa and great Champagne to round it out. Part of a much larger collection, the wines were removed from custom climate-controlled storage for this auction. 35 Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 2008 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe R. 38 Chateau Montrose 2008 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe R. Parker, 95 pts. 05/11 1 magnum $125-200

43 Chateau Lynch Bages 2009 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe R. Parker, 98 pts. 02/12 1 imperial (owc) $1,000-1,500

39 Chateau Montrose 2009 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “A colossal effort, the 2009 Montrose represents a hypothetical blend of the monumental duo of 1989 and 1990 combined with the phenomenal 2003. With 13.7% alcohol (an all-time high at Montrose), it is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and the rest tiny quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Some structure and minerality can be detected in the background, but the overall impression is one of massive blackberry, black currant and mulberry fruit intermixed with forest floor, damp earth, crushed rocks and a hint of spring flowers. Full-bodied with sweet but abundant tannin, Jean-Bernard Delmas believes this is the greatest wine he has made during his short tenure at Montrose since retiring from HautBrion. This wine will undoubtedly shut down for a decade, then unleash its power, glory and potential perfection.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 02/12 3 double magnums (owc) $2,800-4,000

44 Chateau Pontet Canet 2008 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe 1 magnum $150-250

40 Chateau Pichon Longueville Lalande 2008 Pauillac, 2eme Cru Classe 1 magnum $150-250 41 Chateau Palmer 2008 Margaux, 3eme Cru Classe R. Parker, 94 pts. 05/11 1 magnum $225-350 42 Chateau Lynch Bages 2009 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe “Performing even better from bottle than it did from barrel, this appears to be the finest Lynch Bages since the 2000, 1990 and 1989. According to the chateau, the 2009 has the highest level of polyphenols ever measured as well as high alcohol (nearly 13.5%). A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest largely Merlot with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive, voluptuously textured effort with unctuosity and powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry and black currant flavors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense of heaviness or fatigue. This exquisite Lynch Bages should drink well for 30+ years.” R. Parker, 98 pts. 02/12 3 magnums $800-1,200

45 Les Forts de Latour 1995 Pauillac 6 bottles $900-1,200 46 Les Forts de Latour 2008 Pauillac 1 magnum $250-400 47 Salon Les Mesnil 1997 Mesnil sur Oger “Walnut oil and smoky suggestions of struck flint in the nose of Salon’s 1997 Brut Le Mesnil are joined by intimation of the fresh lime and grapefruit that go on to inform its silken yet vivacious and refreshing palate with metaphorically cooling and sorbet-like refreshment. There is a vivid, hauntingly long, wave-like and buoying exchange of chalk and oyster shell, kelp and iodine with luscious citrus against a backdrop of creamy richness. This superb Salon—slightly more restrained than its 1999 counterpart, but no less intriguing or alluring—will merit at least a decade of cellaring.” D. Schildknecht for R. Parker, 95 pts. 11/13 6 bottles (owc) $1,000-1,500 48 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 1995 Napa 1 magnum $125-200 49 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 1996 Napa 1 magnum $125-200

Property of a Massachusetts Gentleman, this dizzying and meticulously curated collection spans the globe: Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone, Loire Valley, Piedmont, Germany, and on, and on. Part of a much larger collection, this consignment was removed from temperature-controlled facilities for this auction. 50 Billecart Salmon Grande Cuvee 1996 Champagne “The nose is an enticing mélange of floral and earth aromas with a dollop of savoury: jasmine, slate, white pepper, freshly baked bread and marmite. The palate is very dry, very tight and seems to be restraining an explosion of fruit and autolytic expression. Crisp acidity and very fine bubbles. Very long minerally finish.” L. Perrotti-Brown for R. Parker, 95 pts. 09/09 1 bottle (owc) $125-200 51 Bollinger RD 1996 Ay “The 1996 R.D. from Bollinger is another superb wine from this vintage. An expressive bouquet of spices, acacia blossoms and perfumed fruit emerges from the wine’s silkytextured frame. This generous R.D. is drinking well today, but also has enough freshness to age well for years. It is a great version of one of Champagne’s legendary wines.” A. Galloni for R. Parker, 96 pts. 03/09 3 bottles (individual owcs) $400-600 52 Charles Heidsieck Oenotheque Charlie 1985 Reims 1 bottle (original gift box) $125-175 53 Krug Brut 1990 Reims 2 bottles $600-800 54 Krug 1995 Champagne A. 55 Louis Roederer Cristal 2002 Champagne “Roederer’s 2002 Cristal is still in its infant, fresh stage. Subtle notes of pears, flowers, spices, mint, minerals and oak are woven into a cashmere-like frame of extraordinary grace and elegance. This beautifully sculpted Champagne possesses notable clarity but with the additional depth of fruit that is characteristic of this vintage. It is a gorgeous, seductive Cristal of the highest level. In 2002, Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay with 10 grams of dosage. 20% of the wine was fermented in oak. This is Lot: L030351A107809. This bottle was disgorged in June 28th, 2007.” A. Galloni for R. Parker, 96+ pts. 12/08 3 bottles (individual gift boxes) $600-900 56 Salon 1996 Mesnil sur Oger “The 1996 Salon is yet another wine that is maturing splendidly. Once focused to the point of being painfully austere and angular, today the 1996 Salon has begun to soften and fill out. My latest bottles have been rich, generous and totally compelling in every way.” A. Galloni for R. Parker, 97+ pts. 11/10 6 bottles (owc) $1,400-2,000

57 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 1995 Reims “The 1995 Comtes de Champagne (original release), on the other hand, shows fantastic intensity in its freshly cut flowers, citrus and spices. Endlessly layered and perfumed, the 1995 reveals gorgeous richness and intensity wrapped around an intense, mineral-driven frame. The tension between ripeness and minerality is simply breathtaking.” A. Galloni for R. Parker, 96 pts. 09/10 6 bottles (oc) $800-1,200

58 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2003 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “A modern day version of the 1959 Lafite, the 2003 Lafite Rothschild was bottled in mid-May, 2005 after achieving 12.9% natural alcohol – hardly an astonishing figure given the vintage’s weather conditions. A combination of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, it represents a ripe version of the essence of Lafite-Rothschild. Dense purple-colored, with classic notes of graphite intertwined with melted licorice, crème de cassis, smoke, and flowers, it reveals extraordinary richness, opulence, power, purity, intensity, and viscosity. Whether this wine will close down or not is questionable as it is somewhat atypical given its sweetness and softness. Analytically, there are extremely high tannins, which I suspect will assert themselves in the future. Production in 2003 was less than half of normal.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/06 6 bottles (owc) $4,000-6,000 59 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2006 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “One of the fabulous surprises, although I had suggested last year that it could jump in quality, of my tastings, the 2006 Lafite Rothschild is a great, great wine made from a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. When I tasted it from barrel, it reminded me of their successful 1988, but it is dramatically superior to that vintage. Frankly, it may turn out to be as good as the 2005, which in all of Bordeaux is a far greater vintage than 2006. Lafite’s severe selection process (42% made it into the grand vin) resulted in a full-bodied wine boasting an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, truffles, lead pencil shavings, and sensationally sweet, ripe black currant and cedar notes. A wine of extraordinary intensity, texture, and depth with silky tannins as well as awesome concentration, this has turned out to be a remarkable Lafite Rothschild that should be drinkable much earlier than the 2005, but age for three decades.” R. Parker, 97 pts. 02/09 3 bottles $1,500-2,300

Online bidding at www.skinnerinc.com

60 Chateau Margaux 2005 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe “Another celestial effort from Paul Pontallier and Corinne Mentzelopoulus, the 2005 Margaux, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, boasts a dense opaque blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, crème de cassis, licorice, and, despite its having spent two years in 100% new wood, only a subtle touch of toasty oak. Although full-bodied, the wine seems light on its feet because of the silky tannins as well as the great gravel terroir from which it comes. Beautiful purity, length, and nobility define this modern day classic. Is it better than the 2000, 1996, 1990, or some of the vintages from the decade of the eighties? Who knows, but it is unquestionably one of the all-time great wines made at Chateau Margaux. This estate has produced only exceptional wines over the last three decades. The seamlessness of the 2005 suggests it will perform well early, but it should last for a half century or more.” R. Parker, 98+ pts. 04/08 6 bottles (owc) $3,000-4,250 61 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2006 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “A sensational effort, the 2006 Mouton Rothschild exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a classic Mouton perfume of crème de cassis, flowers, blueberries, and only a hint of oak. Dalhuin told me that in whisky barreltasting vintages such as 1989 and 1990, Mouton was aged in heavily toasted barrels, and they have backed off to a much lighter toast for the barrels’ interior. I think this has worked fabulously well with the cassis quality fruit they get from their Cabernet Sauvignon. The full-bodied, powerful 2006 possesses extraordinary purity and clarity. A large-scaled, massive Mouton Rothschild that ranks as one of the top four or five wines of the vintage, it may turn out to be the longest-lived wine of the vintage by a landslide. The label will undoubtedly be controversial as a relative of Sigmund Freud, Lucian Freud, has painted a rather comical Zebra staring aimlessly at what appears to be a palm tree in the middle of a stark courtyard. I suppose a psychiatrist could figure out the relationship between that artwork and wine, but I couldn’t see one. This utterly profound Mouton will need to sleep for 15+ years before it will reveal any secondary nuances, but it is a packed and stacked firstgrowth Pauillac of enormous potential.” R. Parker, 98+ pts. 02/09 6 bottles (owc) $2,400-3,000

Chateau Cos d’Estournel sits atop a hillside, the pinnacle of St. Estephe. The exoticism of India, from the Taj style of its outward architectural elements to the elephants flanking the Chateau’s wine archives hints at the perfume of its wines. Cos was in the vanguard of the continuing Bordeaux modernization of cellar design and vinicultural methods, using a gravity driven process to allow Cos’s terroir to unfold, drawing out its signature heady exotic spice, in wines of incredible finesse and supple balance. –MK 62 Chateau Cos d’Estournel 2003 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “The prodigious, fantastic 2003 Cos d’Estournel is a candidate for “wine of the vintage.” A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon (unusually high for this chateau), 30% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, 17,500 cases were produced from low yields. An inky/blue/ purple color is accompanied by a compelling perfume of black fruits, subtle smoke, pain grille, incense, and flowers. With extraordinary richness, full body, and remarkable freshness, elegance, and persistence, this is one of the finest wines ever made by this estate. The good news is that it will be drinkable at a young age yet evolve for three decades or more.” R. Parker, 98 pts. 04/06 6 bottles (owc) $800-1,200 63 Chateau Montrose 2003 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “The enormous 2003 Montrose is built along the lines of the 1989 rather than the 1990. It boasts a dense black/purple color in addition to an extraordinary bouquet of scorched earth, blackberries, and cassis, fabulous purity, a skyscraper-like texture, and substantial tannin in the finish. This superb, huge, ripe wine is one of the vintage’s most prodigious offerings. However, patience will be essential for anyone purchasing this 2003.” R. Parker, 97+ pts. 04/06 1 magnum $250-400 64 Chateau Montrose 2006 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe R. Parker, 94+ pts. 02/09 12 bottles (owc) $700-1,000

65 Chateau Montrose 2009 St. 02/12 12 bottles (owc) $2,800-3,500 66 Chateau Pontet Canet 2009 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe “An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically – a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, crème de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009. This cuvee should shut down in the cellar and re-open in a decade or more.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 02/12 12 bottles $2,000-3,000

67 Chateau Pape Clement 2005 Pessac Leognan “Probably the greatest Pape-Clement ever made, the dense purple-colored 2005 (a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon) exhibits sumptuous notes of smoky scorched earth, graphite, melted licorice, and blackberries. Once past the exquisite perfume, the wine reveals full body, extraordinary concentration, plenty of chocolate, smoke, cassis, and blackberry flavors, and that unmistakable volcanic ash-like earthiness that comes from this appellation. The tannins are slightly sweeter than those found in most northern Medocs, but this is still a backward, large-scaled effort that requires 7-8 years of cellaring. It should last for 30-35 years.” R. Parker, 98 pts. 04/08 6 bottles (owc) $600-900 68 Chateau Fombrauge (Bernard Magrez) 2000 St. Emilion “Made in an over-the-top style that seems to get more classic as the wine ages, this special cuvee from the Fombrauge vineyard (made by Michel Rolland for Bernard Magrez) reveals a dense plum/purple color in addition to a big, sweet nose of camphor, creosote, blackberries, blueberries, espresso roast, graphite, and toasty oak, and a phenomenally layered, full-bodied, rich mouthfeel. I thought this 2000 would be close to full maturity by 2006, but it remains surprisingly youthful. It should drink well for 20-25 more years. Bravo!” R. Parker, 98 pts. 06/10 6 bottles (owc) $900-1,400 69 Chateau Pavie 2003 St. Emilion “The 2003 Pavie (7,080 cases; 13.5% alcohol) is closest in style to the 2000, but slightly more evolved and exotic. Its dense plum/purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, crème de cassis, melted licorice, espresso roast, and blackberries. The wine, which hits the palate with a dramatic minerality, comes across like a hypothetical blend of limestone liqueur intermixed with black and red fruits. With massive depth, richness, and body, this tannic 2003 should be forgotten for 4-5 years, then enjoyed over the next four decades. The integration of acidity, tannin, and wood is flawless, and the wine is incredibly pure, rich, and intense.” R. Parker, 98+ pts. 04/06 1 magnum $350-500

80 Comte de Vogue Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2008 Cote de Nuits “This is also quite reserved at present with an elegant, airy, cool and pure nose that is kaleidoscopically complex as it offers red currant, plum, black cherry and a panoply of floral and spice notes, in particular violet and anise, before marrying seamlessly into mineral-driven and alluring big-bodied flavors that explode on the powerful and almost painfully intense finish that delivers genuinely stunning length. I love the way Musigny can so effortlessly combine a silky palate impression with serious muscle. This should be quite impressive in time though note that it will need a minimum of 18 to 25 years of cellar time.” Burghound, 96 pts. 01/11 6 bottles $2,000-3,000 81 d’Angerville Volnay Champans 2005 (3 bts) Burghound, (93-95) pts. 04/07 Clos des Ducs 2005 (3 bts) Cote de Beaune Tasting Note for Clos des Ducs 2005: “A raspberry liqueur nose with hints of spice and underbrush merges into fresh, ripe, round and sweet flavors of surpassing intensity and purity that tighten up in a flash to become tight and linear on the precise, even laser-like finish. There is a beautiful tension to this wine and while there is a serious tannic backbone, this seems supple on the mid-palate because the structure is so well buffered. This too will see its 25th birthday (and many more) in superb condition.” Burghound, (94-97) pts. 04/07 6 bottles $900-1,400 82 Domaine de la Vougeraie Bonnes Mares 2005 Cote de Nuits Burghound, (92-95) pts. 01/07 6 bottles $700-1,000

This seems less structured than it really is as the abundant sap renders them less prominent if not invisible. While 15 to 20 years should see this at its apogee, this will still be alive and well at 50 years of age.” Burghound, 96 pts. 04/07 3 bottles $700-1,000 84 Gouges Nuits St. Georges Pruliers 2005 Cote de Nuits Burghound, (91-92) pts. 01/07 6 bottles $350-550 85 Henri Boillot Corton Charlemagne 2005 Cote de Beaune 6 bottles $600-900 86 Henri Boillot Puligny Montrachet Clos Mouchere 2008 Cote de Beaune “Here the nose is a bit more complex than that of the ‘straight’ Perrières with a similar nose that displays just a bit more minerality but also notably more tension and punch on the palate staining and highly textured medium-bodied flavors. As it almost always is chez Dauvissat, what really distinguishes this wine from the others in the range is the Zen-like sense of harmony. 106 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape 2007 Southern Rhone “Paul Avril was a bigger-than-life vigneron, a visionary, and a great teacher, but Vincent has been in charge for a number of years, and he has rewarded his father with what I believe is the greatest Chateauneuf du Pape made since 1978 and 1990, the 2007. I have not only tasted this wine at the estate, but I purchased it for my cellar, and have now drunk it on three separate occasions out of bottle. It is unquestionably one of the great Chateauneufs of my lifetime, and I suspect it will merit a three digit score after another 3-4 years of cellaring. The blend is generally 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, and the rest small amounts of Muscardin, Vaccarese, Counoise, and Syrah. It exhibits what is probably the deepest color I have ever seen here, and the finished alcohol is a high (for Clos des Papes) 15.5%. Still slightly restrained because of its recent bottling, but wow, what potential complexity, mind-boggling richness, and compelling flavor profile are apparent. It is a sublime expression of the art of winemaking as evidenced by its dense purple color and big, sweet kiss of kirsch, framboise, blackberries, licorice, roasted herbs, and smoked meat. It hits the palate with a fascinating combination of substance, power, full-bodied authority yet extraordinary freshness, elegance, and precision. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and watch it unleash its glory over the next three decades. This is a prodigious wine of great quality from one of the most important reference point estates in Chateauneuf du Pape.” R. 108 Clos du Mont Olivet Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Papet 2007 Southern Rhone “The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape La Cuvee du Papet may will turn out to be their finest example since the 1998 and 1990. Stylistically, it probably comes closest to resembling the legendary 1990. Notes of roasted meats and smoked duck, with Provencal herbs, truffle, incense, licorice, and pepper, are all there, plus enormous quantities of red and black fruits. This is one heck of a complex wine, with a bouquet that is the essence of southern France, in particular Provence. Fullbodied, powerful, with the glycerin and level of richness covering some lofty tannins, this wine is already accessible and nearly impossible to resist, but my instincts suggest it will be absolutely glorious in another 4-5 years and keep for 15-20.” R. This supercomplex, layered, multidimensional wine possesses remarkable purity and richness as well as silky tannins. One of the most openknit and forward Deus-Ex Machinas made to date, it will be difficult to resist when young, and should age well for 20+ years.” R. Parker, 99 pts. 10/11 3 bottles $350-550

111 Mas de Boislauzon Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Quet 2007 Southern Rhone “The biggest surprise in these tastings was the phenomenal performance of the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Quet. Normally a blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Mourvedre, the 2007’s composition changed to 80% Grenache (all aged in tank) and 20% Mourvedre (aged in small oak barrels.) This wine literally blew me away. Since this is a PG-rated publication, I can not print my original comments upon tasting this wine. Let’s just say the exquisite aromatics were astounding. They include crème de cassis, lavender, roasted meats, new saddle leather, and spice box. The phenomenal aromatics were matched by equally compelling flavors, texture, and purity. Offering a thrill a second, this full-bodied wine exhibits awesome concentration, impeccable balance, and a finish that lasts nearly 60 seconds. I had a difficult time spitting out this amazing elixir, and I kept returning to it during the course of the morning tasting just to confirm my initial impression. The good news is about 500 cases were produced. It should drink well for two decades or more.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 10/09 6 bottles $900-1,400 112 Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo 2003 Southern Rhone “For the fourth time, the Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo has been produced, and for the fourth time, it has received a perfect score although I might back off the 2000’s perfect score based on the fact that it seems to be more of an upper-ninety point wine than pure perfection these days. The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo has distanced itself ever so slightly from the 2003 Cuvee Reservee. Before bottling and immediately after bottling, these two wines’ differences were not as evident. At present the Capo reveals that extra level of flavor, power, complexity and richness. It is a big wine (16.1% alcohol – less than in the 1998, but more than in the 2000 and 2007) boasting a dark plum/garnet color as well as a stunning bouquet of aged beef intermixed with pepper, herbes de Provence, and steak au poivre. This unctuously textured, full-bodied Chateauneuf possesses enormous body, huge flavors and sweet, velvety tannins. Still youthful, it has not yet begun to close down, and I’m not sure it ever will given this unusual vintage. It is a modern day classic that should continue to provide provocative as well as compelling drinking for 20-30+ years.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 10/10 3 bottles (owc) $1,000-1,500

113 Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee 2003 Southern Rhone “The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee stands out as one of the all-time great wines made by Laurence Feraud and her father, Paul. I remember first tasting it from a large tank as it was still fermenting and it was already impressive! It is a full-bodied, powerful wine that must tip the scales at close to 15.5% natural alcohol. I don’t think this big, chewy, voluptuously textured wine will ever close down. Dark plum/garnet with the classic Provencal display of garrigue, lavender, pepper, kirsch and Asian plum sauce, this full-throttle wine has splendid concentration, silky tannins, and a very voluptuous texture. This generous, exuberant Brunello shows awesome depth and richness in a style that captures the essence of the warmth of the southern reaches of Montalcino. The Tenuta Nuova dazzles with its stunning depth, textural polish and captivating, sensual personality. A round, inviting finish has the last say in this majestic Brunello. This explosive, heady Barolo bursts onto the palate with seamless layers of ripe dark fruit, black cherries, menthol, cinnamon, pine and minerals, revealing profound depth and richness. It offers superb length, gorgeous, sweet tannins and a finish that lasts forever. Although it is a surprisingly accessible Sori Ginestra at this stage, I expect it will close down at some point in the near future. Everything is in perfect balance. Silky, refined tannins frame an explosive core of dark red fruit, smoke, minerals, ash, bacon fat, leather and minerals. The 2004 continues to develop exquisitely in the glass, with layers of aromatics, fruit and structure that continue to blossom over the course of several hours. The 2004 still needs bottle age, as it is incredibly primary. Its elegance, however, is impossible to miss. This bottle is simply out of this world. It now seems pretty obvious I underestimated the wine when I first tasted it a few years ago. One day the 2004 will be viewed in the same league with Mastroberardino’s famous 1968 Taurasis as among the most monumental wines ever made in southern Italy.” A. Galloni for R. This round, sweet Barolo is extremely primary at this stage, with tons of dense fruit that almost cover the wine’s tannins completely. Subtle overtones of roses and tar develop in the glass, rounding out this majestic wine. Monprivato is one of the world’s very finest values in collectible, age-worthy wine, and the 2004 is another classic in the making. I was blown away by this wine’s sheer balance and harmony, both of which are remarkable considering the wine’s age.” A. Galloni for R. Parker, 96 pts. 10/08 6 bottles $475-750

132 Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 2007 Piedmont “The 2007 Barolo Monprivato is stunningly beautiful. Monprivato is seldom this rich when it is young. It is most often intensely aromatic, mid-weight and frequently out of balance, especially right after bottling. The 2007 is none of those things. It is a rich, dramatic wine endowed with tons of fruit and a sweeping, enveloping personality. It is also primary and at the beginning of what is likely to be a long, long life. Despite its seeming fragility, Monprivato is one of the most long-lived of all Baroli, even in its weakest vintages. The 2007 is spectacular, but it is very, very young and in need of significant cellaring to shed some its baby fat. Purists may prefer the 2006. I have not tasted both wines side by side from bottle, but 10 years from now it won’t matter. Readers will be thrilled to own either. In 2007 Mascarello opted not to bottle his Riserva Ca’ d’Morissio as he didn’t think there was a huge difference between the Riserva and the straight Monprivato. I guess we will never know for sure, although my barrel tastings have always suggested otherwise. In any event, savvy readers know what happens when there is no Ca’ d’Morissio in a good to great vintage. Recent examples include the 1999 and 2005. By now, its pretty clear the direction those wines have taken. Barolo lovers will not want to be without the 2007 Monprivato. It is a stratospheric Barolo in the making.” A. Galloni for R. 134 Scavino Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata 2004 Piedmont “The 2004 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata has developed beautifully since I last tasted it a few years ago. That said, I am amazed how bright and primary the fruit still is. Sweet, perfumed aromatics lead to a core of silky fruit as this elegant, pedigreed Barolo emerges from the glass. The tannins are exceptionally refined all the way through to the finish, while the French oak is virtually imperceptible. What remains is a gorgeous, fruit-driven Barolo that captures the essence of the Scavino style at its best. The wine should enjoy a long drinking window to age 25 and quite likely longer.” A. A blackish ruby/ purple with a fabulous nose of textbook Cabernet aromas, black currants and blackberries, graphite, river gravel, and sweet herbs, its potent, dense, and packed palate displays flavors of perfect poise, grace and power intertwined and intermingled, shape and grip at the highest level from the initial explosive notes to the resonant, sweet finish.” D. 140 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Le Montrachet 2003 Cote de Beaune u: one 1.5cm, one 2.5cm, one 3.5cm, one lightly torn label, no evidence of seepage “Sumptuous aromas of spices, yellow plums and buttery toast are found in the nose of the medium to full-bodied 2003 Montrachet. A dense, layered, ample wine of awesome power, it is concentrated, spicy, and velvetytextured. Toasted pears, butter, vanilla, plump yellow fruits, melon balls, and notes of passion fruit make up its extremely extroverted flavor profile. Boasting terrific mouth-feel, it also possesses an exceptionally long, seamless finish. While it is difficult to assess the ageworthiness of such a big, super-ripe white Burgundy, it will unquestionably deliver loads of pleasure if consumed over the next decade and perhaps longer.” P. The following two lots are consigned directly from the cellars of The Bruery. Founded in 2008 by Patrick Rue, the Bruery focuses on Belgian-inspired ales with a distinctly American bent. All beers are offered in 750ml format and eschew forcecarbonation in favor of bottle conditioning. Constantly experimenting and never satisfied, the Bruery has developed dozens of recipes on their own and in collaboration with other breweries (and wineries) ranging from pale ales to wild ales to barrel aged stouts. The first lot offered contains a bottle of Batch 1: Levud’s, the first beer released by the Bruery and the winner of a homebrew competition held by the Bruery to determine their first batch. Accompanying Batch 1 are five bottles of the Anniversary Old Ales. Each year is named after traditional anniversary gifts (paper, cotton, leather, fruit and wood) and is produced in a traditional solera style. Over the years, the beer has developed complex layers as older batches are blended with new and aged in a variety of former spirit casks. The second lot includes twelve bottles centered around what is likely the Bruery’s most popular offering: Black Tuesday. Offered once annually on the last Tuesday of October, Black Tuesday is both an homage to the stock market crash of 1929 and a behemoth of a beer – a Russian Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels and every release has been over 18% alcohol by volume. Included here are four vintages of Black Tuesday and eight beers that offer Black Tuesday with a twist, either blended with other Bruery beers or aged with cacao nibs, hazelnuts, coffee or even Syrah grapes from the nearby Los Olivos vineyard.

This gesture of compassion speaks to the character of founder Patrick Rue and everyone else at The Bruery.

A consignment like this does not come often. Often you’ll have a consignor who focuses their collecting in one area like Burgundy, California Cabernet, Belgian lambic or American Stout and they sink their teeth in there, hunting for the gems of that region and everything that comes with it. But rare is the case when all bases are covered. This beer collection is just that rare instance. Like American Stout? Here’s a few bottles of Goose Island Rare Bourbon County Stout and a handful of Barrel Aged Dark Lords as well. Is lambic more your style? How about verticals of Blabaer, or a bottle of Don Quijote, or why not some Loerik? If you prefer American Wild Ale, there’s a complete vertical of Cable Car or a bottle of Veritas 004. And, of course, don’t forget about the Midnight Sun M or the Sam Adams Millennium. Every lot is a high note and every bottle was removed from temperature-controlled professional storage for this auction.

207 Chateau Margaux 2000 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe “Absolutely compelling in two tastings of this vintage, the 2000 Margaux is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. The extraordinary seductiveness, complex aromatics, and purity it exhibits lead me to believe it has reached its window of full maturity. Medium-bodied, with layers of concentration, stunning blue, red, and black fruits intermixed with spring flowers, a subtle dosage of new oak, and a distinctive personality that is elegant while at the same time powerful and substantial, this is a multi-dimensional wine that was extremely approachable and drinkable in both tastings I had of it. The color remains a healthy, even opaque bluish/purple, but there is no reason to hesitate to drink it. It should evolve for another 30-40 years, so there is no hurry either.” R. One impressive lot—from the climatecontrolled cellar of one of the anointed few with access to this vineyard—now it can be yours. Screaming Eagle could only be a California story. Over the span of a decade a tiny winery progresses from inception to becoming one of the most valuable and coveted bottles in the world. Gorgeously lush and hedonistic, the miniscule production adds to the wines tantalizing allure. “Enthusiast” doesn’t even begin to do this consignor justice. With bottles from every major wine-producing region in the world, this offering represents only part of a much larger collection. After a few lots of Bordeaux, we’ll travel through Burgundy with selections spread over five decades before digging into one of the most complete Rhone cellars I’ve ever seen: Beaucastel in spades, including Hommage a Jacques Perrin in original wood, Guigal, Chave, Jaboulet and more. 223 Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges Les St. Georges 1999 Cote de Nuits “Elegance personified with intensely spicy red and black fruit, anise and a hint of oak with mouth coating pungent fruit and earth flavors. The mouth feel here is extraordinary with fine tannins and superb length. This has enormous potential and is one of the finest Les St.Georges I have ever tasted from Domaine Gouges.” Burghound, (91-93) 01/01 12 bottles (oc) $1,000-1,500 224 Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges Les St. Georges 1999 Cote de Nuits Burghound, (91-93) pts. 01/01 12 bottles (oc) $1,000-1,500

225 Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges Les St. Georges 2002 Cote de Nuits “Very ripe aromas combining damp earth notes and hints of coffee, game, smoke and spice introduce crisp, precise, chewy and marvelously intense middle weight flavors underpinned by classy tannins and though this is very firm, the mid-palate sap completely buffers the structure. The intensity builds from the mid-palate and explodes on the long, chiseled finish. A great effort packed with long-term potential.” Burghound, (91-93) pts. 01/04 12 bottles (oc) $800-1,200 226 Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges Les Vaucrains 1988 (8 bts) u: less than 1.0cm Clos des Porrets St. Georges 1988 (2 bts) u: less than 1.0cm Cote de Nuits 10 bottles $350-500 227 Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges Chenes Cateaux 1998 (1 bt) Les Pruliers 1998 (1 bt) Clos des Porrets St. Georges 1998 (2 bts) Cote de Nuits 4 bottles $150-225

There is still some unresolved structure though in my view this has arrived at its peak; that said, this should enjoy an extraordinarily long window of peak drinkability. 259 Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 1989 Northern Rhone u: 2.5cm, lightly bin-soiled label “The 1989 Le Pavilion is a prodigious wine. Made from yields of 14 hectoliters per hectare, this parcel of old vines (averaging 70-80 years of age) has produced an opaque black/purple-colored wine, with a hauntingly stunning bouquet of violets, cassis, minerals, and new oak. In the mouth, the similarity in texture, richness, and perfect balance to the compelling 1986 Mouton-Rothschild is striking, only this wine is richer and longer. This extraordinarily well-balanced wine will probably not be ready to drink for at least 5-10 years, but it will evolve for three decades or more. It is an enormous yet amazingly well-delineated wine. I lament the fact that there are only 600 cases of this magnificent wine. This great Hermitage was the first of a trilogy (1989, 1990, and 1991) of exquisite Le Pavillons. R. An enormously full-bodied, sweet, expansive, amazing wine with a finish that lasts over a minute, it combines the extraordinary hedonism of the 1998 with an unbelievable intellectual appeal that makes it so hauntingly great. Nevertheless, it is an enormously endowed effort revealing notes of licorice, blackberry and cherry fruit, melted asphalt, tapenade, truffles, and smoke. Chewy, with more minerality than most vintages of this wine possess, it requires a minimum of 6-8 years of cellaring. It should last 35-40 years.” R. 304 Il Poggione Montalcino Brunello de Montalcino 1975 Tuscany u: very top shoulder, lightly bin-soiled labels “Il Poggione’s 1975 Brunello di Montalcino is a blockbuster. 1975 was an extremely hot vintage. During this era alcohol levels were around 13.5% but in 1975 Il Poggione found itself with wines in excess of 16% so the estate blended in more wine than normal from its less well-exposed sites in order to bring down the alcohol in the final blend. Still, the 1975 Brunello comes in at a hefty 15%, which was practically unheard of at the time. This powerful, brawny wine is loaded with sweet ripe fruit, menthol and spices, yet amazingly it manages to preserve a degree of freshness as well. I am simply stunned by how gracefully this wine has aged. It is a drop dead gorgeous Brunello!” A. Galloni for R. Parker, 94 pts. 12/08 352 2 bottles $150-200

It will be ready to drink in 8-10 years and keep for up to 30. As always, this is a showy, flamboyant port that has the advantage of being slightly sweeter than other 1994s. A great Graham’s.” R. 344 Warre Vintage Port 1994 Oporto “One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-colored wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, licorice-scented and flavored raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port.” R. Parker, 94 pts. 10/96 12 bottles (owc) $400-600

It has been in bottle for over a year, and this wine, like all the others, has easily soaked up its aging in 100% new Taransaud barrels. It is a sumptuous, unctuously-textured, fabulously concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon that hits all the sweet spots on the palate, and puts the olfactory senses into overdrive. The wine smells and tastes perfect. It is a compelling effort that one day will be considered part of a small group of elite California Cabernets that may be rewriting the definition of greatness in Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1997 boasts an opaque black/purple color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of roasted meats, scorched earth, blackberry, crème de cassis, minerals, and toast. The soaring aromatics are matched by a phenomenally intense, seamless palate, with full-bodied opulence, exquisite purity and symmetry, and a multidimensional finish that lasts for nearly a minute. This wine will be delicious when released next year, and will last for 25-30 years. It is a tour de force in winemaking.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 12/00 4 bottles $1,400-2,000

Its opaque ruby/purple color is followed by sweet cassis notes intermixed with graphite, charcoal, truffles and earth. Full-bodied, opulent, rich and dense, it is still extremely young, but is loaded with potential. It reveals an underlying minerality as well as a floral component (often noticeable in wines produced from these high elevation vineyards on Pritchard Hill), as well as stunning texture and length. A sensational wine, it should be forgotten for 3-4 years and drunk over the following 25-30.” R. A wine of great intensity, exceptional power, and admirable grace as well as equilibrium, this full-bodied 2006 offers beautifully sweet crème de cassis, licorice, spice box, and toasty oak characteristics. Multidimensional, with a layered mid-palate, and a finish that lasts 45+ seconds, it will benefit from some bottle age, although it is accessible enough to be drunk now. With a remarkably perfumed nose of crushed rocks, subtle barbecue smoke, and again, cedar wood intermixed with crème de cassis and blackberry, this wine displays a phenomenally concentrated mouthfeel, full-bodied opulence, voluptuous texture, and of this trio, is certainly the closest to its apogee of full maturity. Overlooking Oakville on the sunny plateau is the lovely and humble estate of Dalla Valle. 398 Harlan Estate 1995 Napa “The 1995 Proprietary Red Wine is almost as perfect as the 1994. It has gotten even better in the bottle, and remains one of the most remarkable young Cabernet Sauvignons I have tasted. The wine, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, was aged in 100% new oak, which adds subtle pain grille/ toasty scents. This opaque purple-colored Cabernet offers up a nose of smoke, coffee beans, black and blue fruits, minerals, and roasted herbs. It is extremely full-bodied, with spectacular purity, exquisite equilibrium, and a seamless personality with everything in total harmony. The finish lasts for more than 40 seconds. This extravagantly rich, profoundly complex 1995 will give its 1994 sibling a run for its money.” R. Parker, 99 pts. 12/98 3 bottles $1,300-1,800 399 Harlan Estate 1996 Napa L. Perrotti-Brown for R. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this enormously-endowed, profoundly rich wine must be tasted to be believed. Opaque purple-colored, it boasts spectacular, soaring aromatics of vanilla, minerals, coffee, blackberries, licorice, and cassis. In the mouth, layer after layer unfold powerfully yet gently. Acidity, tannin, and alcohol are wellbalanced by the wine’s unreal richness and singular personality. The finish exceeds one minute.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 12/00 2 bottles $1,300-1,700

401 Harlan Estate 1998 Napa “The 1998, which is a candidate for the “Wine of the Vintage,” was produced from yields of 0.9 tons per acre. There are only 1,100 cases, and it is the first Harlan Estate to be composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A spectacular achievement, it boasts an opaque plum/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of espresso, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, tobacco, licorice, Asian spice, and roasted meat smells. In the mouth, it is seamless, full-bodied, with an unctuous texture, gorgeously sweet tannin, and layer upon layer of concentration. This is a tour de force in winemaking. It is hard to believe that a wine such as this has emerged from 1998.” R. Parker, 95 pts. 12/00 3 bottles $900-1,200 402 Harlan Estate 2001 Napa “This wine, which first debuted in 1990, has probably garnered more perfect scores than any other Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2001 is just entering a young adolescent stage of development, exhibiting extraordinary nuances such as sweet, loamy soil and earthy minerality intermixed with some background smoke, black currant liqueur, plum, Asian spice and new saddle leather. Full-bodied, it possesses great intensity, with stunning flavors that are viscous enough to coat the mouth, but never become heavy or overbearing. The wine has a remarkable purity, concentration and intensity that should carry it for another 30+ years. This is already very promising, and for those who own it, I would suggest a good two to three hours of decanting prior to service.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 06/11 3 bottles (owc) $1,800-2,400

403 Harlan Estate 2002 Napa “The extraordinary Harlan Estate, which I awarded 100 points seven years ago, offers no justifiable reason to doubt its perfect score. It is still a baby, with an inky purple color and notes of smoky camphor intermixed with crème de cassis, Asian soy and a hint of cedar beginning to emerge as well as some espresso and subtle damp forest floor notes. The wine has awesome intensity, a full-bodied mouthfeel, a skyscraper-like texture, and a finish that goes on for close to a minute. This is a perfect wine, still youthful and young, and not even in full adolescence as of 2012. It has 40 or more years ahead of it, but should hit its plateau of full maturity in another 5-10 years. It is certainly one of the most showy, flamboyant and remarkable Harlan Estates made to date. (More recently, the 2007 tends to resemble this wine more than any other vintage I can think of.) Kudos to Bill Harlan!” R. Parker, 100 pts. 06/12 3 bottles (owc) $1,600-2,200 404 Harlan Estate 2003 Napa “One of the most backward yet promising wines of the vintage is the 2003 Harlan Estate. Its dense opaque plum/purple color is accompanied by a sumptuous bouquet of graphite, camphor, crème de cassis, smoky barbecue wood and a hint of forest floor. Similar flavors hit the mouth with full-bodied splendor, a multidimensional mouthfeel and texture, and the sensational finish lasts more than 45 seconds. Some tannins are still present, and this wine seems much younger than expected at ten years of age, so give it 4-5 more years of bottle age and consume it over the following 20-25 years.” R. Parker, 98+ pts. 06/13 6 bottles (owc) $1,800-2,250

405 Harlan Estate 2004 Napa “Very deep garnet-black colour with a purple rim. Though still very youthful and muted, this vintage is already subtly revealing a wide array of aromas including blackberry tart, cedar, violets, truffles, liquorice and all spice. In the mouth however this is no shrinking violet – the ’04 is a big, concentrated and highly structured wine with somewhat impenetrable, tightly grained tannins and medium to high acid supporting its rich weight. Very, very long finish displaying hints of savoury earthiness and that signature minerality that appears to surface in better years.” L. Perrotti-Brown for R. Parker, 98 pts. 01/09 3 bottles $1,100-1,400 406 Harlan Estate 2005 Napa “Not unexpectedly, the 2005 Harlan Estate performed slightly better than it did last year. As these wines often do, it continues to put on weight as it is bottled very late by Napa standards, and there is no fining or filtration. The 2005 exhibits a gorgeous thick-looking, ruby/purple color in addition to a beautiful nose of burning embers interwoven with crème de cassis, roasted meats, sweet black truffles, and spring flowers. A hint of lead pencil shavings also emerges from this cuvee, which seems to want to be both a Pauillac and a ripe vintage of La Mission Haut Brion. Fullbodied, dense, pure, and revealing sweeter tannin than I remember, it can be drunk now, but it will no doubt display even greater complexity in 10, 20, and 30 years.” R. Parker, 97 pts. 12/08 2 magnums $1,300-2,000 407 Harlan Estate 2006 Napa “The 2006 Harlan Estate has turned out better than I originally predicted. Its dense ruby/ purple color is followed by classic aromas of crème de cassis, melted licorice, smoked meats, burning embers, and graphite. It has thrown off some of the tannic clout it displayed last year, revealing great balance. A candidate for ‘wine of the vintage,’ this dense, full-bodied effort has 25+ years of life ahead of it.” R. Parker, 96 pts. 12/09 6 bottles $1,800-2,400

408 Harlan Estate 2007 Napa The prodigious 2007 Harlan Estate reminds me of a hypothetical blend of the 2002 with a touch of the controversial 1997. Dense plum/purple-colored with sweet aromas of barbecue smoke, blueberries, blackberries, cassis, licorice, hot rocks and subtle oak, it is a splendidly opulent, pure wine with a skyscraper-like texture as well as stunningly deep fruit that expands gracefully across the palate. The finish lasts nearly a full minute. Because of its overwhelming richness and sweet tannins, this brilliant wine seems to be approachable now, but I suspect further nuances and complexity will emerge after 4-5 years in the bottle. This wine will still be going strong at age 25-30. Like the offerings from its sister estate, Bond, these Harlan Estate offerings are uncompromisingly brilliant examples of Napa viticulture and winemaking at its finest. Kudos to proprietor Bill Harlan.” R. 428 Hundred Acre Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan 2003 Napa “The sensational 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard (100% varietal) is a candidate for wine of the vintage. Although it came in at 15.9% alcohol, it is not the least bit hot or out of balance. The wine boasts glorious levels of crème de cassis fruit and licorice that combine to form the background of a perfumed, aromatic wine with full-bodied richness, a voluptuous texture and both hedonistic and intellectual appeal that are sine qua non. This sensational Cabernet Sauvignon seems velvety, but every one of Woodbridge’s wines that I have tasted is velvety from infancy. Yet they age and age as the 2000, a far from ideal vintage, has proven time after time. There is always a Pomerol-like silky texture to these wines, despite the fact they are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2003 is a titanic wine that can be drunk now or in 20 years given the genius of Jayson Woodbridge.” R. It is a gorgeously proportioned, full-bodied effort with plenty of minerality as well as definition. Already accessible, this big wine should evolve for two decades.” R. The Opus One project marked an important milestone in American winemaking. For the first time, a towering figure from the European side, Baron Philippe Rothschild, saw fit to enter into a collaborative venture with the leading California vintner, Robert Mondavi. This association gave a renewed luster to Napa Valley winemaking. The wines tend to be elegant and silky—they are not cumbersome. –PhM

Opaque purple-colored with a dense, chewy, fullbodied personality, it displays abundant cassis, mineral, and earth notes. This brilliantly made, super-concentrated, pure, blockbuster possesses sweet tannin as well as a terrific finish. Having added additional weight since last year, this sumptuous, multilayered, profoundly concentrated Cabernet contains 14% alcohol. It is a candidate for 25-30 years of longevity.” R. Opaque purplecolored, with a profound bouquet of minerals, flowers, black fruits, and spice, this awesomely concentrated, multi-layered wine represents the essence of Cabernet Sauvignon. Amazingly, it is neither ponderous nor heavy handed, with the oak, acidity, and tannin woven into the wine’s formidable, concentrated personality. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. Sadly, it is extremely limited in availability, but what a compelling wine it is! Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. This is a spectacular wine that must be tasted to be believed.” R. Parker, 99 pts. 08/99 6 bottles (owc) $900-1,500 446 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2001 Napa “Remarkably, the 2001 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon may be even better. Staggeringly pure notes of crème de cassis, violets, licorice and graphite soar from the glass of this inky/ purple-colored wine. Composed of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot, and tasting like it is 2-3 years old, it is a stunningly pure, rich, full-bodied, prodigious example of high elevation mountain Cabernet Sauvignon that will not reach full maturity for another 5-7 years, and should age beautifully for another two decades or more. It is a magical wine to smell, taste and contemplate.” R. Parker, 98+ 06/11 6 bottles $750-1,200

It reveals a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with a smorgasbord of spring flower, blueberry, crème de cassis, and assorted blue, black, and red fruit characteristics. It also possesses extraordinary concentration, but what sets it apart is the fragrant aromatics combined with uncommon purity and elegance for such a full-bodied, massively concentrated wine. Its perfect balance suggests it can be drunk at a relatively young age, but it should easily evolve over 30-35 years. Congratulations to all involved!” R. Given its quality, the price is surprisingly realistic, considering how many California North Coast mediocrities fetch three digit prices. This opaque purple-colored Cabernet exhibits wonderfully sweet aromas of melted licorice intermixed with cedar wood, black currant liqueur, chocolate, and spice box. This full-throttle, unctuously-textured, dense, broad, pure, impeccably balanced, expansive 2001 is mouth-coating in its richness and intensity. 472 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild is unquestionably this renowned estate’s greatest wine. As I indicated last year, only 38% of the crop was deemed grand enough to be put into the final blend, which is atypically high in Cabernet Sauvignon (83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot). This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaled Lafite I have ever tasted. It will require many years to come around, so I suspect all of us past the age of fifty might want to give serious consideration as to whether we should be laying away multiple cases of this wine. It is also the first Lafite-Rothschild to be put into a new engraved bottle (designed to prevent fraudulent imitations). The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knockout nose of lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents. Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract and richness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. This wine is even richer than it was prior to bottling. It should unquestionably last for 40-50 years.” R. Chateau Cheval Blanc doesn’t scream out for attention, rather it is passionately pursued by a knowing few. Unquestionably worthy of “First Growth” stature. In keeping with the Right Bank scene, the beautiful park-like setting feels surprisingly casual. Formal to a point, but not overly so. Cheval Blanc is comprised of cabernet franc and merlot. The vinous equivalent of grace and good taste. –PhM 488 Chateau Cheval Blanc 2000 St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classe (A) “Coming out of a relatively dormant state, this 2000 is a spectacular Cheval Blanc. Of recent vintages, I think only the 2009 can give it a run for its money. A blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Franc, the wine has a sweet nose of menthol, melted licorice, boysenberry, blueberry, and cassis. A broad wine with compelling purity, a layered texture, and sweet tannin, with hints of coffee and earth in the background, this is by far the best Cheval Blanc since 1990 and before 2009. It is a legend in the making and can actually be drunk now, as the tannins have nearly melted away. This is a beauty with incredibly complex aromatics.” R. Parker, 99 pts. 06/10 1 bottle $550-750

The flavors are quite powerful, firm and crystalline, underscored by pronounced and ripe acidity buffered by a lovely touch of sweet and sappy extract. This final collection in the auction represents a great opportunity for the curious consumer of wines. These bottles were present in the cellar of a building that experienced a fire on the third floor and was contained well before affecting other areas of the building. Nonetheless, the bottles all bear stickers stating “This bottle has been exposed to a fire and subsequently sanitized.” Several bottles were sampled from this collection, none showing any signs of heat damage. In light of this provenance, however, they are offered here without reserve. 552 Chateau Petrus 1997 Pomerol 1 bottle $1,000-1,500 553 Chateau Haut Brion 1996 (1 bt) scuffed and torn label Chateau Haut Brion Blanc 1996 (1 bt) scuffed and torn label Pessac Leognan 2 bottles $600-900 554 Chateau Haut Brion 1997 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe scuffed label 1 bottle $250-350 555 Chateau Margaux 1997 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe scuffed label 1 bottle $250-350

A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event, and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 3. Ullage (Level of Wine) Illustration and Interpretations For Bordeaux, Port, and other shouldered bottles n. bn. vts. ts. hs. ms. lms. s.

ullage is into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder; usual level for Bordeaux older than 15 yrs high shoulder; usual cork reduction, often found in Bordeaux over 20 yrs, low risk mid shoulder; variation likely as indicates cork deterioration low mid shoulder; some risks, reflected in estimates shoulder; risky, reflected in estimates into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder high shoulder mid shoulder low mid shoulder shoulder

Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted. Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 20 years. Bidders with specific condition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots. Bordeaux wines are catalogued referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloguing reflects the practice of granting it 1er Cru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottled unless otherwise stated. It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening of banded cases will be determined on an individual basis. For Burgundy, German wines and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimeters from cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm. Bottle Sizes bottle (750 ml) magnum (2xbt) marie jeanne (3xbt) double magnum (4xbt)

jeroboam (4xbt); Burgundy, Champagne jeroboam (6xbt); Bordeaux imperiale (8xbt); Bordeaux methuselah (8xbt); Burgundy

demi bottle (demi) split (1/4 bottle) Champagne

Buyers’ Caution: Levels are as when catalogued; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occur during storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine. Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions. Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on. Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful), until the flight concludes. Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you dispose of it.
