Richard Wright (1946-2009)

A charismatic personality blessed with a knowledge of antiques that was far beyond his years, William Richard Wright, Jr. was a full-time antiques dealer by the time he was 11 or 12. Those who knew him from childhood say that even then he showed both an uncanny aptitude for the business of antiques and a burning desire to experience a life of adventure. Throughout his life, those qualities remained with him and became inextricably intertwined. Buoyed by the patriotic, entrepreneurial spirit of a nation emerging victoriously from war, Richard’s parents opened a retail furniture store in the 1950s to grab their share of the American dream. But Richard was not a typical product of the mid century. As would be the case throughout his life, Richard embraced counterculture and was drawn toward liberal thinkers and the avant-garde. Always imaginative, always ahead of his peers, Richard would become a trailblazer within the newly developing fraternity of collecting and the business that created collections. Attending rural auctions in the greater Philadelphia area taught young Richard about local history, but his more global education can be traced to the influence of Robert and Mary Merritt. Perusing and purchasing on a weekly basis the treasures the Merritts brought back to their Douglassville warehouses from Europe, the now-teenage Richard viewed Merritt’s Antiques as a beacon lighting the pathway to his future in the antiques business.

Richard opened his first shop in 1960, at the age of 14. His father, William R. Wright, Sr., took notice of his son’s business acumen and the rapidly rising profile he was gaining within the antiques trade. The senior Wright embraced his young son’s hobby and, after Richard’s high school graduation, refitted the furniture store to become Richard Wright Antiques. His mother, Beatrice, may have been the genesis of the business’s doll specialty, but Richard Jr. was a quick study and had become amazingly decisive about all aspects of this family business. It is a well-known fact that Wright Sr. and Jr. often had a different vision about life and business. This had led to a disagreement on a buying trip in England in the mid 1960s that ended with Richard staying on in London and his parents returning to Pennsylvania. It would prove to be a pivotal moment in Richard’s life. Richard rented a flat and soon was embracing London and everything it had to offer—rock & roll, fashion, the world’s leading social scene, and most importantly to him, dolls and antiques. The true collector in Richard was “born” in England. It was there that he discovered the Aesthetic Movement of the late-19th and early 20th centuries. He would go on to collect antiques from this period for the rest of his life.

Richard became a regular on the London doll scene. Haunting Portobello Road and Kensington Court, Richard filled transatlantic shipping containers with antiques and dolls bound for the family business back in Spring City. The rift between father and son had been patched up quickly, and now his parents had eager collectors waiting in line to buy Richard’s latest finds from across The Pond. Returning to America in the 1970s, Richard began his 20-year partnership with Richard Saxman. Together, they went on buying trips around Europe, as well as in Mexico, South America and all over the United States. After the passing of both his parents, Richard entered a new era of his life in 1982 by moving his shop to Birchrunville, Pennsylvania. His team of faithful employees—Meriel Marlar, Gemma Leigh, Sandi Morris, and Beth Ditullio—had to jump into the fast lane to keep up with the high-speed pace of Richard’s buying and selling. By the 1980s, collecting had moved into the mainstream of America, and Richard became a leader in selling all levels of dolls. He encouraged the success of others and supported the creation of a code of ethics in the doll world by becoming the first president of the National Antique Doll Dealers Association. He became a headline-maker internationally from his high-end purchases. His bearded face was plastered on the cover of countless national newspapers, under the words “World record price paid for teddy bear.”

Many people who did not know him personally still felt as though they did, from his countless appearances on the PBS television show Antiques Roadshow. But the most significant benefit of the show was meeting his life partner Glenn Stevens at his very first taping. All along his career’s magical trail, which Richard would have likened to the Yellow Brick Road, he embraced everything and everyone he met. When Richard walked into a room of fellow doll collectors, the atmosphere changed. It became electric. It became fun. More than 50 years of doll collecting is represented in this catalog. By studying this collection it is very easy to see Richard’s many facets. He was not a doll snob, he loved the common, the unusual, the rare, and the original. In his collection, you can see both his sense of humor and his preference for things that were “genuine.” I asked myself, what would Richard say of the sale of his collection? And in my head, I heard his voice saying what I had heard him tell so many customers—“That’s a cool doll, you should buy that.”

Important Kris Kringle Doll, Germany, c. 1852, papier-mâché shoulder head with molded and painted features, short curly black hair with brush-stroked front bangs, blue painted eyes, closed mouth, overstuffed cloth body with kid hands mounted to a cloth covered round base, wearing wool plaid costume with blue fur trim, red wool pants and socks, black leather shoes, paper covered muslin cone shaped hat with black fur and paper Christmas die cut dated 1852, the body covered with approximately fifty-five period playthings including a wood rifle, two flutes, carved wood rooster, wood noisemaker, wax covered wire baskets, bird cage with wax bird, American flags, tin cookware, toy pocket watches, German cast soft metal toys including horse drawn omnibus, ships, trains, scissors, whistles, trivets, tall clocks, horns, bells, frames with mirrors, a side-wheel boat, hot air balloon, and others. ht. 22 in., (excellent, some soiling to clothes, some minor losses to toys). Note: Accompanying this doll is a handwritten note reading: “Kris Kringle sends greeting through Cousin Anna to the children, and wishes them a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year - Christmas Eve 1852.” The original condition and completeness of this doll provides an incredible glimpse of Christmas in 1852. $6,000-8,000 21

Impressive Georgian Painted Wood Three-Story Baby House, England, late 18th century, probably built by an estate carpenter, the faรงade accented with hand-carved dimensional quioning, and with small arched recesses and vertical beading to cornice, divided into three distinct sections with hinged locking doors, the center section recessed and centered by entry staircase; the hipped roof with three chimneys evenly spaced across the top; the exterior painted a soft fawn color with thin lines of white paint to simulate ashlar stonework, with the blind four-paned windows outlined in brown, and accented with white painted interior window shades set at varying heights; the arched front windows recessed into the walls with attached carved sills, with the rectangular side windows without recessing or sills; the interior featuring nine rooms, some with vintage wallpapers or painted-over papers indicating periodic redecorating, as well as some pictures or wall hangings on the walls; some floors unfinished, others with wallpaper or old carpet scraps; one room with original recessed fireplace with a grate, and a freestanding kitchen fireplace with tin insert is included with the house, (areas of exterior trim missing, overall very good), ht. 40, wd. 38, dp. 16 in. Note: Mr. Wright acquired this house from the estate of noted doll collector Dorothy Dixon, who originally purchased it in England. Many of the contents of the house, which are being sold in this auction as separate lots, reportedly came with the house, but Miss Dixon apparently added several items of more recent vintage. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Skinner, Inc. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) cancelling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaserâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has failed to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale. 7. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser for such item. 8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots. 9. All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number. Exemption numbers from other states are accepted in Massachusetts if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties can apply for a Massachusetts exemption number prior to the auction by contacting the Massachusetts Department of Corporations and Taxation at 100 Cambridge Street in Boston. 10. Except for property purchased via on-line Live Auctions, a premium equal to 18.5% of the final bid price up to and including $200,000, plus 10% of the final bid over $200,000, will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the Buyer as part of the purchase price. The buyers premium on property purchased via on-line Live Auctions will be in the amount equal to 22.5% of the final bid price up to and including $200,000, plus 15% of the final bid over $200,000. 11. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalogue. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalogue, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent. 13. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law). The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents to the nonexclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit.
