Skate parks to open in Castlegar and Creston Nelson, BC: The Regional District of Central Community (RDCK) is pleased to announce that the Castlegar & District Recreation Complex and the Creston and District Recreation Complex will be opening its skate parks on Wednesday May 27. This is a coordinated effort with representatives from across the West Kootenay region who met to review the guidelines and recommendations for skate parks that were released by Canada Skateboard on May 16 (Click here to view Canada Skateboard guidelines). The Nelson Skateboard Park, which is under the purview of the City of Nelson, intends on opening sometime soon after May 27. “We are excited to be able to open our skate parks in Castlegar and Creston, but stress the importance of staying local,” said Joe Chirico, General Manager of Community Services. “This is an important first step towards a new normal, but a cautious one. It is the RDCK’s top priority to ensure public safety; therefore, we ask all skate park users to abide by the rules and regulations so we can keep the parks open and everyone safe.” Working from the Canada Skateboard Skateboarding and COVID -19 Public Health measures document the RDCK has established important guidelines to assist in our opening. Regulations will be put in place to ensure that COVID-19 restrictions are abided by at all times STAY LOCAL Skate or bike to your local park Avoid traveling to other jurisdictions where parks are open to avoid overcrowding If vehicle travel is essential, avoid carpooling with individuals outside your bubble STAY APART Keep your distance while skateboarding Skate at low traffic times, if the park is busy, try another time Avoid hanging out at the skate park if you are not skating STAY SAFE If you are sick, stay home Do not share equipment Ease back into skating. Do not go all out on your first trip back to the skate park Avoid touching obstacles with your hands Bring sanitizer to clean your hands after your session. Please respect the skate park and your fellow skateboarders. Let’s keep the skate park open!
