Personal Statement
I believe Sir Francis Bacon put is best when he said, “Knowledge is power. What I think he left out though is that the ability to learn is one of the most important aspects of gaining knowledge. From what I have learned at school is that architecture is always adapting and changing. Without the ability to learn to adapt to our changing environment, one is lost. This portfolio is meant to showcase my abilities as well as display my adaptability and progress throughout my educational experience. Architecture school is meant to teach students how to learn and what they do with this ability is up to them once they leave school. - Stephanie Johnson

Lyceum Competition REFORESTATION The objective of this studio was to compete in the Lyceum Competition. The design challenge of the competition was, “What happens when industry leaves substantial marks on the earth? The way I approached this project was to try and create a new type of building that was designed to give back to the natural environment. To do this the building I designed featured a completely living membrane designed to grow over time. The juxtaposition of the environmental defecation of the mining site in contrast to the living building helps visitors to the site see how our current building environment cannot continue on the path it is on right now.

LIVE GREEN AND YELL - O In this studio we were asked how to maximize the potential of our current campus bookstore. What I saw was the potential to not only have a bookstore but a mixed-use building that included retail, offices, and student housing. By providing a variety of occupants this would allow for a much more vibrant and welcoming site. The site was also on a corner which brought up some interesting design challenges. By providing multiple layers of the building allows for a gradual step back from the street.

Junction City Oregon Civic Center - Fall 2010 Architecture Studio REVAMPED VERNACULAR This studio was dedicated to redeveloping the civic center of Junction City, Oregon. The new civic center would include a City Hall, Community Center, Police Station, and Senior Center. The City of Junction City provided the site, which already had existing buildings including the city’s water tower. For this project I decided to focus the project on the agricultural history of the city and showcase that in the building forms.

Dexter Lake Boathouse - Spring 2010 Architecture Studio BRIDGE OVER PATHWAY For this studio we were asked to design a boathouse on Dexter Lake, in Lowell, Oregon. The site was a small plot of land located between two parks along Dexter Lake. I did not want to disturb much of the natural beauty of the site which is why I decided to place the building in the already existing open spaces on the site. For this project I decided to break the building into two parks and then put a bridge to connect the buildings. I was also inspired by the covered bridge that was located on Dexter Lake.

Whiteaker Branch Library STABLE CENTER
Whiteaker Branch Library Perspective
The theme for this studio was to create a Branch Library in the Whiteaker Neighborhood in Eugene. The site of the project was located on the crossroads of two busy streets in Eugene so I decided to create a library that was internally focussed and provide a stable and quiet space for people to find refuge from the noisy streets outside. Hand Drawings and Sketches DRAWINGS These are just a collection of different drawings and sketches that I have done over the past several years. Some of these drawings are places which I have visited like the Mt. Angel Library, Gerlinger Hall, and Lillis Hall. Most of these drawings are done in pencil, pastel or charcoal.

Professional Work PKJB Architecture and Engineering For the summer of 2011 I was able to work at PKJB Architects in Seattle, Washington. For the summer I was given many tasks and jobs to preform. Among them were making projects booklets to send to clients and city officials. I was able to draw up and propose a new facade design for a Goodwill Renovation Project. I also worked a lot in Revit over the summer to create different renderings for a Dentist office renovation as well as put together construction drawings for a new garage. During the summer I was also responsible for putting together the new company website which can been found at www.pkjb.com.

Professional Work SU DEVELOPMENT For the summer of 2010 I was able to work at SU Development in Bellevue, Washington. For the summer I was given many tasks and jobs to preform. Among them were making projects booklets to send to clients and city officials. I created and put together the signage for the new Soma development which is a new Cutler Anderson currently in construction in downtown Bellevue. I was also in charge of creating the floor plan layouts for each unit in the complex so they could go up on the complex’s web site. During this internship I learned a lot and was able to get experience in the real world.

Luminaire Project BLOSSOM NOUVEAU For this project we were asked to design a luminaire that would be placed in a kindergarten classroom. This was a group project so myself a two others decided to create a decorative lighting fixture that the children could look at during nap time. We decided that the luminaire should be fun to look at as well as has a warm glow. To do this we played up the warm tones of the light by adding copper wires and glass to catch the light.
