From the Director South Jordan Residents, As we get ready to launch into summer, I hope you take a few minutes and look at all the fun and exciting things we have planned for Summer 2015 contained in this edition of the Leisure Guide. Whether its spending time at the Fitness & Aquatics Center, enjoying the wide open spaces at Mulligan’s or taking in one of the movies in the park, there is something for every age and skill level to get out and enjoy many of the amenities that the City has to offer.

I’m especially excited about our first ever Safety & Preparedness week in August. This will be a whole week focused on ways you can enhance your individual and family preparedness.

We are planning several mini-classes that will be offered at no cost. Watch for class schedules and registration opportunities coming soon and then plan to participate in the Friday night festivities that will end the week in our annual safety fair.

Keep this guide handy this summer, it may be useful when the kids complain that they are bored and need something to do. Here’s to an adventurous summer!

Mulligans Golf and Games has something for everyone with two 9-hole courses, a lighted and heated driving range, practice areas to improve your swing, two miniature golf courses, batting cages, top of the line golf equipment and PGA golf pros. Mulligans is known throughout the Utah golfing community for having the best range balls, mats and heaters.

There are 34 hitting stations that are covered, lighted and heated.

MEGA Junior Golf

“Mulligan’s Elite Golf Academy” is for experienced juniors who have taken beginning golf lessons and now want to play the course. Players will receive instruction and opportunities to play the golf course. Players will need to be able to walk nine holes of golf, with little supervision. Each week there will be a 45 minute clinic and then an opportunity to play nine holes of golf.

Group Fitness Class Descriptions 30/30: 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of muscle & core work.

Athletic Challenge: Cardio & strength training class utilizing hand weights, steps, spin bikes, and jump ropes with intervals of walk/running on the track. It’s a fun, fast, and athletically challenging class that can be modified for all fitness levels. Works the entire body in just an hour!

Bag Box & Tone: From sequences that work the bags to weight lifting exercises this class will challenge you and ultimately, change you. You get the best of all aspects of fitness in less than an hour! All levels of fitness are welcome. The music will invigorate you, the instructor will motivate you and the class will empower you to reach your fitness goals.

Barre Strength & Tone: A fun, high energy experience! Combining Yoga, Pilates, and Ballet moves to slim, strengthen, stretch, and tone your body.

Cardio Shock: This fast paced class combines high and low impact exercises to really work your heart and lungs. Push yourself to the next level with this superb calorie burner.

Core/Bosu: This exciting workout combines a moderate to high intensity cardio, core, and strengthening workout. Enjoy energy building cardio choreography and muscle strengthening all in one fun class. Appropriate for all fitness levels.

Cycling: Designed to improve cardiorespiratory and muscular endurance. Class includes a variety of terrain that is easy enough for everyone to follow. Proper alignment, body mechanics, and goal specific training will be taught. It’s a fun ride and a challenging workout!

Full Body Circuit: A full hour for your whole body. Come work hard and increase your overall fitness through a variety of cardio and muscle exercises. Utilizing the bike, track, gym, and entire spectrum of exercise equipment you will never get bored.

Hip Hop: Have fun dancing your way into fitness! This class breaks down hip-hop moves into a fun and easy to follow and energetic class. Don’t let the name intimidate you…this class takes the fun up a notch with super-hot moves that will leave everyone wanting more!

Kickboxing: Bust the bags and get your body moving! Kickboxing is a heart pounding, gut busting way to build your endurance & tone your body.

Krank Cycle: Kranking provides a new way to build aerobic capacity and upper body strength while burning calories and building core stability. Because it utilizes the upper body instead of the legs, it represents a unique cross-training opportunity for all athlete types.

Muscle Max: Come pump up your metabolism, build muscle mass, and strengthen those bones! This class is designed to build muscular strength and endurance. We will be using equipment ranging from free hand weights to stretch bands to barbells to bosu.

Pump & Abs: This weight lifting class focuses on low weights and high repetition movements that will sculpt, tone, and strengthen your body fast.

Piloxing: A non-stop cardio fusion of standing Pilates, Boxing, and Dance that will push your past your limits for a toned, sexy, and powerful you!

Step Interval: Challenge your mind and body in an intense step class. Intervals of intensity and/or weights increase cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength. Come join a class that keeps you moving and your heart pumping all while having a good time!

Stretch: A total-body stretch class. Strengthen connective tissue and stretch muscles you didn’t know you had. This class is designed to improve the elasticity of your muscles and restore and reaffirm comfortable muscle tone. The result is a feeling of increased muscle control, flexibility, and range of motion. Open to all levels.

Triple “S”: Utilizing an adjustable platform step and hand weights, participants work through intervals of low complexity, high intensity step and strength exercises followed by a complete body stretch. A comprehensive, total body 75 minute workout, easily modified for all fitness levels.

TRX: Suspension training utilizes bodyweight to build strength, balance, flexibility, and core for all fitness levels.

TRX Fusion: TRX, weights, cardio bursts, and bosu.

Turbo Kick: The hottest kickboxing class around! Turbo Kick is a non-contact kickboxing class (meaning we don’t use bags) that combines athletic moves, sports drills, hip-hop flavor, and so much more! Come try the ultimate cardiovascular challenge!

Yoga: Yoga improves circulation, strengthens muscles, increases flexibility and breath capacity, reduces stress, improves well-being, and challenges your mind. Class includes various poses and some meditation and relaxation.

Zumba: Fuses hypnotic Latin flavor and international zest with easy to follow moves. Achieve long term benefits while experiencing and exhilarating hour of calorie burning, heart racing, muscle pumping, body energizing, awe inspiring moves.

Routines and resistance are varied to tone and sculpt, while burning fat. Come have a fitness party with Zumba!

Senior Fitness: Classes designed exclusively for older adults who want to improve their strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance.

Silver Sneakers Classic: Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and improve activities for daily living. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a Silver Sneakers ball are offered for resistance. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support.

Silver Sneakers Circuit: Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardio & muscular endurance, muscular strength, and balance with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a Silver Sneakers ball is alternated with low impact aerobics choreography. A chair is used for standing support, stretching, and relaxation exercises.

Silver Sneakers Yoga: Will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of seated and standing postures designed to increase flexibility, balance, and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

Pool Rules

General Pool Rules • Walk while on deck- Please do not run • No rough-play or sitting on shoulders • Heavy, rigid, or sharp toys are not allowed for safety reasons: Soft, inflatable, and foam toys are acceptable so long as they do not threaten the safety of others.

• Only Coast Guard approved flotation devices allowed: Air filled personal flotation devices (PFDs) are not to be used in the facility. Appropriate PFDs will have the Coast Guard approval printed on the item. These have met various safety tests and requirements to be used at our facility.

• Children 8 years old and younger must be accompanied by a responsible individual 14+ years of age: The child’s supervision must be within arm’s reach at all times. The majority of rescues occur when a child is not within arm’s reach of an adult.

• Children ages 9 - 10 years old, must have a responsible individual 14+ years of age be on deck, watching if not swimming with the child.

• No food, drink, or glass containers in pool and locker room areas • No smoking on the premises • Swimmers must shower before entering the pool • Only appropriate dress allowed: Swim suits and clothing items that are inappropriately revealing are not allowed.

This is a family friendly facility and clothing worn must reflect that. Swimming attire (no street clothing) must be worn in the pool.

• No sliding or swinging on handrails • No climbing over in-water walls or hanging on lane lines/ropes • No abusive or crude language • No diving or flips anywhere in the pool • Persons with open sores or rashes are advised not to use the pool area • Any child 3 and under, any child not toilet trained, and anyone who lacks control of defecation shall wear a water resistant swim diaper and waterproof swimwear • Diapers must be changed in the locker rooms www.sjc.utah.gov

• The use of cell phones, cameras, and other recording devices is prohibited in the locker rooms Splash & Play Area Rules • No head-first sliding • No climbing down net • No climbing up slides • Clear slide area after exiting slides • Single sliders only • No standing on floatables Water Slide Rules • Must be 48” tall to use the slide • Single sliders only • Riders must slide on their back and feet first • PFDs are not allowed on the slide • Parents or guardians are not allowed to catch their children at the bottom of the slide • Glasses or goggles are not allowed on the slide • Clear slide area after exiting slide Lap Lane Rules • If lap lanes are full, swimmers must share with other patrons and either split the lane or circle swim until another lane becomes available • Walking will not be allowed in Lap lanes unless there are no people wanting to use that amenity.

• No free play in the lap lanes SWIM BREAKS During Open Plunge Hours the Lifeguards will signal for a Five Minute closure every hour.

Certain areas of the pool may be closed to the public during aquatic programs, such as water aerobics and swim lessons Check our current schedule for a list of aquatic program times or feel free to contact us with any questions.

Use this chart to determine which level your swimmer is at: Aqua-Tots (Bubbles) 6 Months - 3 Years

Parents learn to help their children blow bubbles; submerge mouth, nose and eyes; float on front and back; and retrieve dive sticks.

Beginning Preschool (Squirt) 3 Years - 5 Years

Participants will be taught how to blow bubbles, submerge face, front and back float, front and back glides, kicking on front and back, circle arms, understanding pool rules. All skills will be assisted by instructor.

Advanced Preschool (Crush) 3 Years - 5 Years

Prior to entering advanced toddler, front and back floats need to be performed without assistance. Skills include submerge face, front and back floats, front and back glides, kicking on front and back, basic front crawl, understanding pool rules. Transition to independent swimming.

Level 1: (Nemo) 5 1/2 Years +

This course is designed to be a beginning level course for children 5 and older. Skills that will be taught include: submerged face, front and back floats, front and back glides, kicking on front and back, front crawl, and age-appropriate safety tips.

Level 2: (Dory)

This level focuses on the transition to independent swimming. Those that have passed advanced preschool would enter this level. Skills include: front and back floats, front and back stroke.

Level 3: (Marlin)

The skill in this level include: front crawl with side breathing, back crawl, elementary backstroke, treading water, butterfly kick and motion, and jumping in to the deep end to retrieve submerged object. Level three will be in the lap lanes to strengthen endurance.

Level 4: (Bruce)

This level is a precursor to the pre-competition level. Distance swimming in front crawl and back stroke will be improved upon as well as butterfly, breaststroke kick, and open flip turns.

Tidal Waves: Pre-Comp/Comp

Perfecting strokes while swimming laps. Building strength, endurance, and developing healthy and safe exercise practices.

Water Fitness Class Descriptions Circuit Training: Using a variety of exercise stations, we work cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. This class is taught in a combination of the deep and shallow areas of the pool.

Combo Challenge: A high energy class using both deep and shallow parts of the pool. Dynamic movements are added to take advantage of the water’s natural resistance.

Advanced Body Conditioning: This class offers a deep water workout, focusing on muscle conditioning and toning. It includes an advanced abs workout, targets posture improvement, and promotes cardiovascular endurance.

Interval Training: This class focuses on improving both cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. It is taught in a combination of the deep and shallow areas of the pool.

Aqua Cardio: This is an intense cardio and strength class perfect for any fitness level. Interval cardio will be used with the aid of flotation belts, cuffs, hand buoys, and resistance tubing.

In the Deep: Take the impact out of your workout using water resistance for a great fat burning and muscle toning cardio routine.

This class is taught in the deep end of the pool with flotation belts provided.

Low-impact Splash: Activate your urge for variety! Splash offers fun, shallow-water movement to improve agility and flexibility while addressing cardiovascular, strength and endurance conditioning. No swimming ability is required and a kick board or other aquatic equipment is used to improve strength, balance and coordination.

Aqua Blast: A high intensity water workout to blast away those calories.

Live Oak Dog Obedience

Jan Perkins graduated from BYU with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. She started Live Oak Dog Obedience in 1980. Jan is also certified with the American Kennel Club as a CGC instructor and conducts tests throughout the year.

• Every day in the United States about 900 sudden cardiac arrest deaths occur out-of-hospital or in the emergency room.

• Being trained to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can mean the difference between life and death.

• Bystander CPR, provided immediately after cardiac arrest, can double a victim’s chance of survival.

• Death from sudden cardiac arrest is not inevitable. If more people knew CPR, more lives could be saved.

Salt Lake County Aging and Adult Services has distributed nutritious meals for over a decade with minimal increase, but in order to keep up with rising operating costs they are asking participants to increase their suggested donation. Nutritious meals are served Monday through Friday at noon.

Reservations are requested by Tuesday of the previous week. Please call 801-302-1222 to make your meal reservation.

Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge

Ride along with us up to Brigham City to see the birds at the refuge. June is Breeding and nesting season. We will be taking the 12 mile loop of the auto tour through the heart of the refuge. Also we will visit the James V. Hansen Wildlife Education Center. There is an optional walking trail to explore as well. Bring your own sack lunch or one provided by SLCO Aging and Adult Services.
