Who We Are In the spirit of Saint John the Baptist, and guided by Catholic

tradition, we educate young people of diverse abilities and backgrounds in an environment of mutual respect and compassion. We prepare them for higher education, instill in them the skills and desire necessary to continuously learn and adapt in our rapidly changing world, to serve their communities with conviction and grace, and embrace lives rich in faith and gentleness.

What We Believe We believe in the teachings of Jesus and the mission of the Church. As stewards of the Catholic tradition, we educate our students in the faith, we worship as believers, and we live out Catholic social teaching. St. John the Baptist DHS is a place where a diversity of students, families, faculty and staff find acceptance and sense of community. We believe in academic integrity and excellence as an educational institution. Each student in this community is challenged to discover, utilize, and develop his or her intellectual abilities. Maximizing academic potential prepares the student for both college and opportunities in the world. We believe in the development of the whole person. We empower young people to handle not only the academic, but the spiritual, social and psychological challenges of adolescence. To achieve this end, we hold each student responsible for his or her own decisions. Discipline is embraced in a spirit of accountability, trust, and justice, but it is tempered with compassion and understanding. We believe in giving every student the opportunities to discover, utilize, and develop his or her God-given gifts and talents. Extensive co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities allow the student to grow to his or her full potential. Such endeavors build friendships as well as a spirit of collaboration and cooperation. We believe we are called to serve each other. Students are challenged to give of their time and talent, starting within our SJB community and then extending into their local neighborhoods, churches and the global community.

Catholic Identity The Catholic Identity

of SJB provides us all the freedom to foster in our community a personal relationship with the Risen Christ through the Catholic Church. From this relationship, we can invite all to participate in liturgical celebrations, sacraments and fellowship. In addition, through the Church’s teachings and our commitment to social justice, we have the ability to show great care for others, whether they are in our community, on Long Island, or elsewhere. With these two dimensions, our Catholic identity leads the way and defines who we are and what we do.

Academic Program Student Centered Curriculum St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is fully accredited by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and by Cognia®, North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. Students at St. John the Baptist DHS are placed in courses based upon their individual strengths and interests. Incoming ninth (9th) graders are scheduled course levels based upon the results from the TACHS exam and/or the student’s 8th grade records. Freshmen are able to take Regents Level or Honors Level courses. In Sophomore year and beyond, students can qualify for Regents, Honors, Advanced Placement, or College Advantage level courses. St. John the Baptist DHS offers college level courses through St. John’s University, Adelphi University, and Molloy College. The College Academic Program provides students the opportunity to acquire college credit from the aforementioned institutions while still attending St. John the Baptist DHS. These courses are taught by St. John the Baptist DHS faculty that have been approved from the affiliated college. Credits acquired through these institutions may be transferrable to many different colleges or universities across the nation. Many of our students graduate from St. John the Baptist DHS with at least a full semester worth of college credits! Students have numerous choices in electives to fulfill their New York State mandate for their Art credit. This includes electives in the Performing Arts Program as well as our NEW Engineering program. As a Junior and Senior, students have a wide array of course electives to choose from to help enhance individual skills or discover new ones. Please see our Course Offerings booklet under the Guidance Department tab on our website for further information. St. John the Baptist DHS students are not just enriched academically, but also spiritually. Students must complete five hours of volunteer community service each marking period as part of the Religion Curriculum.

Research & Partnerships Project Lead the Way All SJB students have the opportunity to enroll in our NEW 4-Year Engineering Program, Project Lead the Way. Our faculty members have been trained and are certified to teach this program. Each PLTW Engineering course engages students in interdisciplinary activities like working with a client to design a home, programming electronic devices or robotic arms, or exploring algae as a biofuel source. These activities not only build knowledge and skills in engineering, but also empower students to develop essential skills such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and perseverance.

GENESIS Research Program The GENESIS Research Program was created to give students an opportunity to pursue areas of study in which they have a passion or interest that would go beyond the traditional classroom learning experience. Students will work with a SJB Program Director and Project Mentors to design GENESIS projects in a field of their own interest, combining their passion and scientific methods for real life experiences. Project Mentors may be SJB teachers, college professors, and/or professionals from the field of study who can share their interests and expertise with the student. Students in the GENESIS Program will learn and work in a challenging, supportive, high-tech environment where exploration, questioning, reasoning, and critical thinking are encouraged and required. The program will also afford students an opportunity to expand their personal awareness and perspectives beyond their local community to develop a global social consciousness and a lifelong desire to learn through exploration. 7

AP Capstone Program AP Capstone™ is a diploma program from the College Board. It’s based on two year long AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Rather than teaching subject-specific content, these courses develop students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing, and presenting. Students who complete the two-year program can earn one of two different AP Capstone awards, which are valued by colleges across the United States and around the world.

Good Samaritan Hospital & SJB We-CARE Hand-in-Hand Partnership Beginning in September of 2021, Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH) and St. John the Baptist DHS (SJB) have partnered to bring various career professionals from GSH to SJB students. The program currently consists of two (2) components: 1) speakers from a variety of Departments from GSH will present information to interested students once a week after school. These departments include the Medical Professionals, Plant Operations, Legal Careers, Medical Billing, and Administration. 2) SJB students will be able to ‘shadow’ professionals from GSH in their areas of choice, once per week after school beginning in the Spring of 2022. Participation in the program will result in the students receiving one (1) St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School credit, similar to our GENESIS Program.

Student Support

The Guidance Department is equipped with full-time New York State Certified School Counselors, each knowledgeable in assisting our students in facilitating their academic success. Our Counselors offer support for students’ emotional and social growth. They challenge our students to identify their own interests to help them to create academic plans with realistic goals. Students are assigned to a specific Counselor at the beginning of their freshman school year and remain with that Counselor throughout their four years of high school at SJB. Students are introduced to our College & Career Readiness Programming, through Naviance. A Guidance Class is built into the student’s schedule each year during a specific marking period to add

additional support and access for our students to the Guidance Department. SJB Graduates exceed the NY State graduation requirements by acquiring a minimum 29 units of credit. Our Seniors have applied, been accepted to, and have earned degrees from some of the most competitive Colleges and Universities across the country. All students acquire: • 4 credits of English • 4 credits of Social Studies • 4 credits of Religious Studies • A minimum 3 credits of Math • A minimum 3 credits of Science • A minimum 3 credits of a World Language • 1 credit of Art (or Performing Arts) • ½ credit of Health Education • ½ credit of Computer Science • 2 credits of Physical Education • A minimum 4½ credits of additional electives Please feel free to access our Course Offering Guide (under the Guidance Tab on our website) for a further breakdown of courses per year.

Students can also avail themselves to the services of our full-time Licensed Clinical Social Worker. The Social Work Office collaborates with the Guidance Department, Campus Ministry, Administration, Faculty, and Staff to provide psychosocial support and crisis intervention to students and/or their families. The Office serves as a resource for referrals to community agencies and outreach to help address any personal health or family issues.

Forever A Cougar Diana M. Pergolizzi-Langone, ‘83 Social Studies Department

“I first chose SJB at 14 years old, then again for my career path, and once again as the parent of two alumni. I promise you that choosing to come here is a choice you will never regret. I have made lifelong friends here at SJB and we are truly a family!”

Matthew Domanico, ‘03 Guidance Department

“Being a student at St. John’s was truly the best four years of my life. Not only did it provide me with a quality education and lifelong friendships, but its’ family environment brought out the best in me academically, socially, and spiritually; by helping me to find my connection with our Lord. When I was offered the opportunity to come back home to SJB, as both a School Counselor and a Coach, I knew I wanted to be nowhere else than the place that helped me develop into who I am today. SJB is full of strong traditions and it is a blessing every day to be able to pass those traditions onto this and future generations of students.”

Jess Maddalena, ‘02 Campus Ministry

“I transferred to SJB from a different Catholic high school in the middle of my Freshman year. I knew almost immediately that SJB was the place for me; I felt comfortable and at home here in a way I had never felt in any other school I had attended. As a student, SJB offered me opportunities I wouldn’t have had anywhere else- things like volunteering with the Catholic Worker in NYC and marching in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The friends I made here as a student are still my best friends today. Working here as both a teacher and Campus Minister has been one of the greatest joys of my life. To be able to walk with students through high school and guide them on their faith journey

Ralph Dalton, ‘82 Boys’ Athletic Director

“Being able to come back to SJB was a dream come true. I have been committed to Catholic Education for 33 years and I have been given the privilege to give back to the school that gave me a great foundation. I had so many great experiences here. Being able to build relationships with the student-athletes, to watch them grow into young adults and see them achieve their goals has been the most rewarding. One of my greatest moments here was to watch my son graduate from SJB and as his Coach, we won a baseball championship together. That is what the SJB family is all about. Tradition, family and faith.”
