Value Creation we can be proud of

The largest seafood exhibition of its kind in the world takes places in Barcelona from April 26th to 28th. The exhibition is divided into two parts, the Seafood Expo Global and the Seafood Processing Global. There companies present both products and services, and the latest machines and devices in the industry are also presented. The exhibition has grown a lot and today there are about two thousand companies from 78 countries participating. Up to 30,000 visitors from 152 countires attend the exhibition.

The seafood industry relies on ever-increasing research and product development, but experience has shown that increased value creation in the industry is based on ingenuity that we can be proud of. All of this is based on the pillars that we know so well. This knowledge is our wealth and insight into further innovation for the future. By sharing our knowledge, relationships are also formed, which can be invaluable to companies.

Sigurðarson shared some of the challenges that they see in the industry today. High employee turnover on the processing floor at their clients, as well as physically demanding jobs and those that

require a lot of precision over a long period of time, are some of the biggest challenges. Marel Fish emphasizes that their product range can solve the physically difficult tasks, such as lifting and moving heavy objects. They also emphasize that their machines show more precision and consistency than the human hand in order to increase utilization, performance and quality of the end product.

“We prioritize our clients’ challenges in our development process, and our close relationships with customers are essential to our success,” says Sigurðarson. “We are grateful for the good cooperation we have had. Through this cooperation, we can ensure that our solutions and products solve real problems.”

Amidst crisis, opportunities arise. According to industry experts, the pace of development has been unprecedented in recent years, with the Covid pandemic serving as a catalyst for change. As Sigurðarson puts it, “The epidemic forced us to think outside the box and find new ways to serve our customers. We had to pivot quickly to remote support and find innovative ways to offer virtual services, such as utilizing virtual reality and other digital tools. Ultimately, it made us stronger and more efficient in the long run as we also worked closely with our customers to revamp our service contracts to prioritize efficiency and minimize travel.”

While the pandemic brought many challenges, it also spurred muchneeded progress and growth in the sector. “The most exciting thing in my opinion is how we are moving towards our solutions becoming a platform that we can develop further with software updates that focus on improved utilization, new cutting patterns or increased information to support improved operations and decision-making,” explains Sigurðarson.

Expanding product portfolio

Marel successfully closed two acquisitions during Covid. On November 19th, 2021, the company acquired Valka ehf., an Icelandic provider of innovative fish processing solutions. Following that, on February 1st, 2022, Marel closed the acquisition of Curio, a primary processing equipment provider for whitefish processing. According to Sigurðarson, the acquisitions have been a great success. “With the purchase of these two innovative companies, we’ve added to our previous product range, as well as bringing in a lot of very talented and experienced people,” he says. “It certainly takes time to integrate the companies into one activity, but the impact that customers who own Curio and Valka equipment will feel is that there is a larger network supporting the solutions.”

Highlights of new applications

Marel Fish is set to present their latest and most advanced solutions for the fish processing industry at the upcoming Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona. Their range of equipment, including filleting machines, grading systems and gutting machines, will be on display both onsite and through live streaming demos on a big screen. According to Sigurðarson, the company will be showcasing a new generation of a

salmon filleting machine that offers previously unseen improvements in utilization.

“We put a lot of effort into the show experience and care that our customers enjoy themselves,” says Sigurðarson. “We will have an open kitchen, bar, lounge for conversations and meetings, as well as streaming product presentations. Attendees can expect live demonstrations of Marel Fish’s state-of-the-art technology, as well as the chance to meet with experts who will be on hand to discuss their products and services.”

Along with their hardware solutions, Marel Fish will also present their software solutions that help automate the production process and provide real-time data analysis. bacterial growth, preserving the maximum quality of the catch. Furthermore, the cold chain never breaks with OptimIce, meaning that the fish remains fresh at all times, from the minute it enters the boat through transportation to processing.

Rapid cooling rate

“Our cooling rate is unprecedented; it only takes about one hour to cool down to 0°C while flake ice can take up 15 hours to cool the same catch,” explains Jónas Gunnarsson, Marketing Director at Kapp, “OptimIce is produced directly from seawater and is viscous, consisting of microscopic ice crystals that flow and surround the entire catch immediately. This extremely rapid transfer of energy is what differentiates our application from the typical flake ice applications.”

Fresher than flake ice

OptimIce has been extensively used in cooling and storing seafood for many years aboard vessels and in transport, showing prolonged raw material quality compared to flake ice. The fine texture of the ice ensures less markings on the fish and better preservation.

“Our comparison research and customer experience has shown us again and again that the quality is maintained far longer with saltwater slurry ice than flake ice,” explains Heimir Halldórsson, Sales Director

at Kapp. “After 14 days, the quality of fish that has been cooled with OptimIce is still evident, the fish is fresh and looks new.”

OptimIce allows the catch to be stored in drained containers, preventing the catch from laying in a liquid bath. When applied, the ice flows freely, completely surrounding the entire catch, and excess liquid is drained away, leaving uniformly distributed ice.

Years of customer satisfaction

OptimIce has been installed in numerous vessels worldwide, and its customers have found the system to be both reliable and efficient. According to Pétur H. Pálsson, Director of Icelandic fishing company

The slurry ice is liquid and is poured over the freshly caught fish. It surrounds the fish and quickly cools it down to around -0.5°C and keeps it at this temperature during processing without freezing the fish. The temperature of the fish stays at around -0.5°C throughout the fishing trip, during transportation on land and on his way to the final consumer.

Vísir, they have used the OptimIce liquid ice system onboard their fishing vessels for years with great results. “Our experience has been outstanding,” Pálsson has said. “It gives us, without a doubt, better quality, longer shelf life, reduced labor hours and better price for our products.”

Less cost, better ergonomics and improved efficiency

The machines help fishing companies improve the entire cooling process and maintain catch quality until landing and processing. What’s more, by installing a system that produces liquid ice from seawater on site, fishing companies minimize the energy, effort and wear and tear of hauling hundreds of tubs of flake ice onboard ships. OptimIce takes less manpower, less electricity, less vessel load and eliminate the cost and effort of transportation, creating a more ergonomic working environment. Much better working conditions as fishermen no longer need to shovel flake ice manually onto fish tubs.

“We have a great example from our latest installation onboard Icelandic seafood company Brim’s 57-meter fresh trawler ‘Helga María’ RE-1, where our machine replaces a load of up to three hundred fish tubs full of flake ice that they had to haul for every trip,” says Gunnarsson “Now ice slurry is produced on board and simply sprayed over the fish using hoses. The fishermen no longer have to manually shovel flaked ice from tubs in storage, that took up space, added to fuel costs and were a dread to manage.”

Introducing a new line of eco-friendly CO2 OptimIce liquid ice machines

Kapp is committed to stay ahead of their client’s sustainability needs. This will be demonstrated by their new line of OptimIce CO2 that will be launched. The new product range offers several advantages in terms of environmental impact, sustainability and efficiency. The use of carbon as a cooling agent instead of freon is a truly ingenious way to minimize the carbon footprint. Unlike freon, which is a potent greenhouse gas, carbon has a much lower global warming potential and does not contribute to ozone depletion “We are excited to be participating in the energy transition process taking place in the

industry,” says Halldórsson. “Other cooling agents are being phased out, CO2 is easily available, more eco-friendly and simply cheaper. Using carbon instead of freon you go down from between 2-4000 Global Warming Points to a mere 1. This is a great step towards a greener future.”

New machine for smaller boats

Kapp is also launching a new saltwater ice slurry machine at the expo. The machine is designed to provide high-quality cooling to fishing companies that operate small boats. “We are offering our innovative system to smaller boat operators in warmer areas of the world that have a need for fast cooling,” says Halldórsson. “Rapid cooling upon catch is crucial for maintaining freshness and preventing bacterial growth. The larger vessels carrying our systems have streamlined their cooling process with our technology and we want to offer the same efficiency, sustainability and quality to others.”

As consumers increasingly demand quality and freshness, seafood producers must employ every viable means to meet these expectations. According to Halldórsson providing companies with exactly what they need, along with evaluating the catch itself, the volume and processing methods and then matching them with the right machines, is crucial. Not only do they need the right equipment, but they must also have the right support after installation. In his words, “good service is everything.” He firmly believes that regardless of how great a product may be, without proper service, it’s useless.

Kapp’s client base spans the globe, with close collaboration with customers in Scandinavia, America, and northern Europe. The company is dedicated to providing its customers with the best products and services possible. According to Halldórsson they emphasize a high level of service in all their equipment installations “We are flexible and dedicated to ensuring efficient installations and great after sales services for all customers, no matter where they are located,” he explains. “A service engineer from us usually stays with a new installation for the first trip. They go along to make sure everything works perfectly and to support the crew in using a new application. We do not leave our customers until we know they are set up for success. “

Contain the Freshness

The transport and preservation of fish catch can be challenging, especially when it comes to maintaining the quality and freshness of the catch. Borgarplast is an Icelandic company that specializes in producing highquality insulated containers for the fishing industry. The company was founded in 1980 and has since become a leading provider of insulated fish bins in Iceland and abroad. Borgarplast’s fish containers are designed to keep the temperature of the catch constant, thus preventing the growth of bacteria and preserving the quality of the fish.

“We were the first to start manufacturing insulated Polyethylene plastic tubs back in 1986. These are double walled tubs with insulation that keep catch fresh for longer,” says Kristján Benediktsson, Borgarplast’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “We’ve been producing these ever since. Today our insulated tubs are in use all over the world, from Scandinavia to Turkey.”

and provide local support for maintenance and repairs if and when needed,” says Benediktsson. “We have a strong working relationship with our agents and our clients, some of whom have been with us from the very beginning.”

Keep catch fresh and protected during transport and storage

Borgarplast produces a wide range of tubs and bins for fish and seafood. Their containers are designed to be durable, flexible, and environmentally friendly, making them a great choice for the fishing industry. Made from shock-proof and resistant material, the tubs are designed to withstand the demands of the fishing industry.

“Operators in the fish industry have different requirements and our goal is to provide the right container for our client’s needs,” says Benediktsson. “We offer tubs with either Polyurethane (PUR) or Polyethylene (PE) insulation in a range of sizes for different fish and seafood needs. The most commonly used are the 460 and 660 for whitefish but we also produce anything from the smallest 300 tub to the large 1400 tubs used for tuna.” Whether transporting fish across the country or across the ocean, these containers provide the protection and preservation needed to keep the catch fresh from start to finish.

Different insulation for different needs

Borgarplast’s high insulation bulk containers are an ideal choice for preserving the freshness and maximizing the value of seafood that needs to be preserved on ice or liquid ice. The two types of insulation offered by the company have different qualities. Polyethylene (PE) is fully recyclable, heavier, stronger and can be stacked higher on land while the tubs with Polyurethane (PUR) are lighter, keep low temperatures for longer and are more suitable for large volumes of tubs needed on board fishing vessels or in warmer climates where

external heat plays a larger role in preservation measures. The high insulation properties ensure that the contents of the containers are maintained at a constant temperature, even as low as -18°C if necessary.

Rigorous testing

“Our R&D department has carried out rigorous testing on both durability and temperature maintenance and the results are consistent,” explains Benediktsson. “If you need reliable loading, high stacking storage, fast transport and great insulation your needs are best met with our PE range. If you need bulk, long storage time and flexibility I would recommend the PUR range. Either way, your fish will be well protected from the minute it lands in the tub and until it is ready for processing.”

Unique convex bottom design

The unique convex bottom design of the tubs prevents the bottom from dropping due to the weight of the contents. This distributes evenly the weight to the corners, eliminating the need for a third skid in the middle. This design also provides easier drainage, making it easier to clean and maintain the tubs. “The tubs have a very smooth surface

to prevent bacteria from concentrating anywhere,” says Benediktson. “We emphasize the hygienic design of all our products. The innovative convex bottom and the curved surfaces make the tubs easy to clean and the strategic drainage holes boost hygiene even further.”

Hygienic and easy to handle and clean

The tubs are easy to repair and maintain. They are made from highquality materials that are resistant to impact, chemical damage and UV rays. The containers are designed with reinforced corners and sides for added strength, making them suitable for use in harsh outdoor environments. Tight-fitting lids are also available to ensure that the catch stays fresh for as long as possible.

“When speaking to our customers I have been very happy to hear that our containers carry far less maintenance costs than the

average insulated plastic bulk containers from other companies,” says Benediktsson. “It is also very easy to repair the bins if necessary and our agents are equipped to provide repair services on site.”

Quality that lasts – even decades

Fish containers go through a lot of handling during every haul. Again and again, they are banged, stacked, turned and loaded having to withstand both forklift handling and rough conditions. One of the key benefits of Borgarplast’s containers is their durability and longevity. They are built to last, withstanding the impact of rough waters and rough handling, ensuring that the catch remains protected throughout the transportation process.

“Our containers are designed to be sturdy, durable and maintain the quality of the catch in even the roughest conditions,” says Benediktsson. “Our fish bins outlast the competition by several years. In general, we see them last for decades with good care and one of our oldest customers is still using the original containers they acquired from us in 1991, adding more as their operation has expanded. They’ve tried bins from other manufacturers over the years but have been so impressed with the low maintenance, durability and quality of our bins that they have kept to them.”

Reuse, reduce, recycle

Emphasizing environmentally conscious practices, Borgarplast adheres to strict regulations in the food industry and maintains a strong environmental policy for both their products and company. Their Polyethylene (PE) tubs are 100% recyclable, while their Polyurethane (PUR) tubs are lightweight, saving on transport costs, and helping fishing companies maximize transport volume while minimizing public road wear.

“No recyclable materials are used in our food-grade products, but we recycle PE tubs into other suitable products, including grit bins, tubs, pipes, or pallets for garden, home, and building work,” says Benediktsson. “Even after serving their purpose in the seafood industry, EPS tubs in Iceland often get a new life in farming and construction before being converted into energy by Swedish recycling companies.”

Exceptional Production Flexibility

Icelandic fish producer Vísir, a new subsidiary of Síldarvinnslan

ounded in 1965 in the bustling fishing town of Grindavík, Iceland, Vísir grew into one of the leading long-line fishing companies in the country. Today, Vísir operates four vessels within the catch limit system and two boats in a hook catch limit, and has two state-of-the-art processing facilities in Grindavík.

Originally a family business, Vísir is run by Pétur Hafsteinn Pálsson who remains at the helm after the company’s acquisition by Síldarvinnslan hf, a leading fisheries company in Iceland, in 2022. The headquarters remain in Grindavík, with Vísir becoming a subsidiary of Síldarvinnslan.

According to Pálsson, the company’s strength lies in its greater flexibility compared to many producers. The company is capable of easily shifting focus between product categories. On a daily basis, they are able to adjust to different cuts of fresh, frozen, salted or lightly salted products, depending on the status of the raw materials and customer orders.

“In the salting facility we produce salted and light-salted fish and can easily adjust between sizes when we’re processing the catch. One size is well suited for filleting and another for splitting, and we can easily play with that,” says Pálsson. “In our other facility we can easily switch freezing and processing for fresh based on the market at any given time. We can prepare for each order when the catch comes in and then simply adjust our raw material processing between different cuts and fresh or frozen in any combination within the same day. No one that I know of has this capability of being able to distribute the raw material between such diverse processes depending on type, size, freshness and customer order status.”

Flexibility can be costly for some fish producers but Vísir has not observed any changes in performance or effectiveness as a result of the current practices. “Our adaptability doesn’t come with a high cost due to our innovative processing plant design,” Pálsson explains. “We have collaborated with top-notch fish processing equipment makers and now operate cutting-edge facilities that cater to our clients’ needs quickly and efficiently.”

This project adds to our sustainability efforts by utilizing underused resources from the fishing sector.”

Future possibilities in salmon

The ongoing development of salmon farming in the southwestern region of the Iceland presents significant opportunities for Vísir. “Our processing capabilities in Grindavík can be optimized by sharing technology between the processing of whitefish and salmon,” says Pálsson. “We are following the trend and have taken the first steps in this direction with a spontaneous project that came our way. We were able to assist a salmon producer that needed packing services by converting our third facility in a matter of days. This particular project was impromptu but salmon processing services will likely play a growing role in our future processing activities.”

Although current production volumes are still relatively modest, with around 45 thousand tonnes produced last year primarily through sea pens farming, Iceland’s extensive experience in processing and a culture of value creation from the whitefish industry offer significant opportunities. For instance, Samherji Fiskeldi is constructing a land-based farm on the Reykjanes peninsula in south Iceland and this development capacity alone will match the total Icelandic salmon production of last year, demonstrating the enormous potential of the industry. A recent analysis predicts a yearly salmon production of 245 thousand tonnes in Icelandic within 10 years.

Automation and Processing Potential of Iceland’s Salmon Industry

With rising volumes from the faming however most of the salmon exports still comprise of whole fresh fish, head on gutted. Only a small proportion of processed salmon is being exported and this has prompted discussions about the potential for further processing of salmon in Iceland. To maintain a competitive edge, it is imperative to increase productivity in the salmon processing industry. Automation is a key driver in achieving this goal, but it requires significant capital investment and economies of scale. Overcoming Distance: How Icelandic Salmon Exporters Can Reach International Markets

The Icelandic salmon industry, transporting high value product with limited shelf life, faces a significant challenge due to the distance from markets. Currently, much of the Icelandic salmon is processed in Poland, which is closer to retail markets in Europe. Iceland is limited to transport either by sea or air. It has a major international airport in Keflavik that serves approximately 80 cities in Europe and the US, most passenger planes have cargo space that can be used to transport fresh fish and Icelandair Cargo operates a fleet of cargo planes that can transport significant volumes of fish and fly daily to Europe and the US. While there are no direct flights to Asia from Keflavik, salmon can be shipped to continental Europe and then flown to Asia. Icelandic ports have three major shipping companies, including Smyril Line, Samskip, and Eimskip, which sail regularly to ports in Europe and the US. While the distance from markets presents a challenge for the Icelandic salmon industry, the country’s well-connected airport, cargo planes, and shipping companies offer a decent range of solutions to transport fresh fish to retail markets in Europe and the US. Icelandic salmon exporters can leverage these transportation options to expand their reach and explore new markets.

Exploring the Feasibility of Value-Added Salmon Production in Nordic Aquaculture

Matís recently held a workshop in Iceland focusing on Value Added Processing in the Nordic Aquaculture, which aimed to explore the feasibility of value-added salmon production in Iceland, Norway

and the Faroe Island. Representatives from salmon farms, marketing and sales professionals, processing equipment developers, research groups, and transport and freight companies in the region attended the workshop. The workshop revealed that the Nordic salmon industry shares similarities in terms of value-added production, but there are significant differences between countries. One major challenge they all face are high wages and costs, which reduce their competitiveness against lower-wage competitors. Additionally, getting the final product to retail shelves can be a logistical challenge. However, the lack of delivery power could be overcome through cooperation among Nordic farmers, producers, and sales companies. Vertically integrated companies have an advantage in terms of monitoring the process from farming to sale and having better information throughout the process. Nordic salmon producers have strengths such as their technological capabilities and the use of superchilling to improve quality and shelf-life. Furthermore, secondary processing can add value through side stream production. A strong demand for salmon value-added products provides an opportunity to build a strong brand for the Nordic product. Strict regulatory frameworks and adherence to reasonable legislation can further push farmers to commit to environmental matters and animal welfare standards, contributing to building a strong brand. However, the industry also faces several challenges. Logistic and shelf-life limitations, unfavourable tariffs on trade, and high production costs compared to competitors are the main negative factors. A significant challenge identified for Iceland is the need for a steady, year-round supply of salmon and the difficulties of serving retail chains from a distance. Logistics and transportation costs were identified as potential barriers, particularly for companies operating in Iceland and the Faroe Islands. To enhance their brand, farmers and producers can minimize negative environmental impacts such as carbon footprint and genetic contamination and use ships for transport instead of airplanes to reduce carbon footprint.

Over the years Samherji, one of Iceland’s largest seafood companies, has installed 20 Mist systems both on board their new vessels and at their high-tech processing facilities. Another Icelandic fish processing giant, Síldarvinnslan, invested in the ALVAR Mist Core system after extensive testing and has reported great results. According to the company, the ALVAR system has helped them achieve a bacteria-free environment, which has improved their product quality and safety.

Improved sanitation, savings and sustainability

Traditional disinfection methods used in the seafood industry often consume a large amount of water and chemicals, which can have adverse effects on the environment. Alvar’s Mist system provides a solution to these challenges, delivering hygiene, safety and quality to its customers. Safer salmon production

Lately, Icelandic salmon producers have turned to the Mist disinfection systems for a safer production process. Eðalfiskur was the first to install the system in September 2020 and has since reported easier and less time-consuming cleaning processes. In addition to these benefits, the company also confirmed that the Mist system has greatly contributed to the safety of salmon production.

Following in Eðalfiskur’s footsteps, Arnarlax began using ALVAR ’s system in October 2020 and also reported excellent results. The system proved effective in combating Listeria and lowering all ATP numbers, enabling the company to monitor potential Listeria infections. Other salmon processors have also recognized the value of the Mist disinfection system in maintaining microbiological purity in salmon processing plants. BK Salmon recommended the system as an innovative solution, praising its high efficiency in preserving microbiological purity while also being cost-effective in terms of water consumption and biocides.

Enhanced efficiency

machinery,” says Sigþórsson. “We have a long list of satisfied clients around the world, all of whom have benefited from the efficiency and effectiveness of our disinfection technology.”

Thai Union has confirmed the ALVAR cleaning system’s high effectiveness in reducing microbiological count and conserving water during cleaning and disinfection at their processing facility. Royal Greenland is another satisfied client, reporting significant improvement in cleaning performance and a marked reduction in microbiological count since implementing the ALVAR system.

Honored for innovative disinfection technology

The company’s exceptional work in this area earned them a research and development grant from the Icelandic Technology Development Fund in 2021. The grant is being utilized to support the development of an automatic equipment system designed to sterilize food transport containers.

ALVAR was awarded the Innovation Award in the “Processing Sector Value Creation, Small Company” category at the Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition in May 2022 for their latest product, Mist Focus. This innovative solution, which was developed and released in 2022, is a compact system that offers effective disinfection of small, enclosed areas such as water cutting machines and other equipment that are challenging to clean and sanitize.

“Our research and development approach is centered around maintaining the quality of our products and proactively addressing the challenges that our clients may encounter,” states Sigþórsson. “In recognition of our dedication, we were awarded the Innovation award and the Icelandic Ocean Cluster award last year. Such awards and grants serve as encouragement, as they bolster our R&D department and motivate us in continuing to deliver the best possible disinfection technology for the food industry.”

says Rakel Yr Petursdottir, CEO of Markus Lifenet. “It has proven to be successful in situations where traditional methods have usually failed.”

Since 1986, the Markusnet has been required on all deck vessels 45 feet (15 meters) and larger in Iceland. ISO certified and approved by Lloyd’s Register EMEA, the Markusnet is also mandatory equipment on decked vessels in several countries and a standard in harbors in Iceland. It was introduced to the MSC and DE committees at the IMO during the development of new requirements III-17.1 in SOLAS for man overboard recovery systems.

When time is of the essence

“The Markusnet is designed to quickly and efficiently rescue individuals who have fallen overboard. Upon deployment, a throw line is used to establish a connection between the individual and the ship,” explains Pétursdóttir. “This line then serves as a means for the individual to pull themselves to the net, where they can sit or lie down and be lifted up to safety by two crew members. The net is very effective and reliable, particularly when every second counts. Under optimal conditions, the entire rescue process can be completed in just one minute.”

The Markusnet is manufactured in different versions based on the freeboard height of the vessel and is available for lifeboats, tender boats, public transport boats, and offshore coastguard vessels. With the right equipment and training, the risk of man overboard incidents can be reduced, leading to a safer ship, lower insurance costs, and a more positive team morale.

Innovation in each generation

The company has been promoting the renowned man overboard rescue technique Markusnet to the international maritime community since 1984 and has been dedicated to improving and refining its systems over the years. The device has been developed over several generations and has now become a standard for international maritime safety.

“We launched the fifth version in 1999 and the net is now widely used on deck boats, ships, quay areas, and offshore installations,” says

Petursdottir. “Our nets are reusable without having to repack them, and are available for both manual and crane use.”

Scalable rescue and escape nets

In 2002, the company released its first rescue net designed specifically for FRB boats, which has proven to be an effective and user-friendly solution. Building on the success of the Markus MOB Boat (FRB) Rescuenet, Markus Lifenet went on to develop the Markus man overboard scramble-net for lifeboats, tender boats, public transport boats, and offshore coastguard vessels. This innovative product allows for single deck crew to provide a fast and reliable man overboard recovery option. The MOB Rescue-net is designed for SOLAS type rescue boats. It is designed to roll an unconscious MOB onboard in a horizontal position. Workboats with limited lifting height can easily use the company’s Cradle Rescue-net that has a lifting height range from 0.5m to 2.5m and a suitable rescue zone midship.

For vessels with high freeboard height, the Cargo Ship Rescue-net provides the necessary means for lifting MOB with lifting height from 3m (12’) to 10m (35’) with a suitable rescue zone midship on both sides. “Our larger climbing nets have proven successful in mass rescues, such as in the Mediterranean,” explains Pétursdóttir. “Those who have the strength can get up themselves while the rescuers focus on the others.”

According to Pétursdóttir their climbing nets are cost effective, their production is efficient and they are lighter than other rescue nets on the market. In addition, all their equipment is moveable which is more efficient and flexible than many other similar products.

Emergency ladders for lone operators

In addition to these products, Markus Lifenet Ltd also provides the Markus MOB Emergency ladder for boat type MEL2. The ladder is designed for leisure boats and workboats of all types and provides a person who has fallen overboard and a rescue swimmer the ability to climb back on board. “The ladder is used more on skiffs and sailboats as an addition to fixed equipment on the side of the boat,” explains Pétursdóttir. “This has saved many people, especially when people have been sailing or working alone.”

Maintenance and service are essential

As a third-generation director of a family business, Pétursdóttir takes pride in the quality of their service. She stresses the importance of regular maintenance and service for their products. “In the event of a man overboard, it is crucial that the equipment is in top working order. We have a strict maintenance and inspection protocol in place that I implemented in 2015 and our clients have been very happy to have a well-regulated inspection framework for their rescue equipment.”

International network of agents

The company has a network of agents around the world that cover both sales and service. They perform maintenance checks and each time a replacement part is needed the company does a security check on the equipment in question. This is in addition to the scheduled maintenance for each item.

“Our international clients are very conscientious in maintaining and caring for their equipment,” Pétursdóttir explains. “Most of our agents and resellers have their own service departments locally and carry out the same inspection protocol as we do. They are proactive in their service and are always on hand if and when needed.”

Cooperation with the Coast Guard in several countries

Markus Lifenet’s commitment to innovation and rigorous testing has resulted in a range of products that meet the demands of official government bodies. The company has a long-standing relationship with the Icelandic Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard and has supplied equipment to military organizations around the world. “We’ve always had a great working relationship with the Icelandic Coast Guard. They have participated in our testing and supported our development over the years,” says Pétursdóttir. “Our dedication to testing and innovation has resulted in the Markusnet becoming the only equipment of its type with ISO approval.”

Escape nets for oil platforms

The company is continuously working towards the development of larger nets, as they believe their lighter and more cost-effective products have the potential to meet the requirements of increasingly larger vessels and oil rigs.

The R&D department of Markusnet started developing the largest nets in cooperation with the developers of moveable oil platforms. As there were no standards available for escape and rescue equipment of this scale, the company relied on decades of experience and expertise to create a solution that would suit vessels of this scale. With the same innovative spirit that produced the Markusnet, the company delivered an SCN Escape product that has been widely adopted on international oil platforms.

Expanding into new industries

“We see great potential for our products, particularly as vessels and oil rigs become increasingly larger,” says Pétursdóttir. “Our largest escape nets have been supplied to large, moveable oil rigs in the Gulf of Guinea and to some of the largest vessels in the world. Our experience and innovative spirit make us well-equipped to meet the needs of these industries.”

Slippurinn Akureyri, a shipyard and seafood processing machine manufacturer in Iceland, is expanding its range of products for land-based fish processing and aquaculture. The company has established a new facility in Grindavík, Iceland, to produce a range of equipment for land-based fish processing, which will complement its existing DNG by Slippurinn range of processing equipment. Slippurinn’s growth has been driven by a service-oriented approach that puts its customers first, and the new expansion aims to improve its services to customers and offer an expanded range of processing equipment.

The shift in focus for Slippurinn, according to Páll Kristjánsson, CEO of Slippurinn is a result of changes in the Icelandic fishing fleet. “With fewer fishing vessels in the Icelandic fleet and a generally lower demand for ship services, we decided to focus on expanding in other areas,” says Kristjánsson. As a result of this shift, Slippurinn has been systematically working on strengthening its production of various processing equipment and product development. “We are manufacturing processing equipment for whitefish, roes and canning equipment along with tub solutions under the DNG by Slippurinn brand, and we are also designing fish farming equipment and building products for fish farming companies,”

sector,” Kristjánsson says. “We had an opportunity to acquire the entire whitefish product portfolio from a known processor in Iceland and saw that as a way to incorporate new systems for land-based processing in our operation. We procured their facilities and personnel in Grindavík, Iceland and have doubled down on our resolve to expand in the processing sector.”

Slippurinn has a long history of designing, constructing, and installing processing decks on various types of vessels, both domestically and internationally. As Blöndal notes, “Our processing decks are built on decades of experience and industry expertise.” Slippurinn has installed over a dozen turnkey decks for fishing vessels in recent years and will continue to focus on innovation and product development in that area.

New systems for onboard processing

Slippurinn’s processing decks for vessels are built with a focus on superior raw material handling and efficiency, which are easy to maintain. Their control systems have a comfortable user interface where everything is controlled from a single computer for efficiency and convenience.

“We have made significant progress in developing equipment for processing decks,” says Blöndal. “Our focus has been on designing equipment that enhances performance and improves the treatment of fish. One such solution that has been installed on 8 vessels since its inception 2 years ago is the Sealion, which provides bleeding and washing capabilities.”

DNG’s Sealion is a high-quality solution for bleeding and washing that guarantees a consistent treatment for the catch. Designed without a conveyor band, this chambered vat minimizes cleaning and maintenance efforts while preventing dirt and contaminants from accumulating. A smaller demo version of the Sealion by DNG connected to Kapp’s liquid seawater ice system will be display at the Seafood Expo in Barcelona. “The Sealion can be used with a liquid Ice system for cooling and we will display that at the show,” says Blöndal. “It is ideal for various sizes of vessels with different catching methods.

DNG R1 – A new electronic jigging reel with advanced software capabilities and accuracy

“Our first electronic jigging reel for fishing was introduced in 1984 and now we are launching the R1, a re-engineered, powerful jigging reel, which we’ll exhibit at the Seafood Expo in Barcelona,” explains Blöndal.

“I am proud to say that it is one of the most advanced jigging reels on the market, built on inhouse expertise and decades of hands-on research and development with fishermen in Iceland.”

The R1 is considered the industry leader due to its highly accurate depth detection and modern software capabilities. The R1 uses less electricity and operates silently due to reduced noise levels. It also retains the popular catch-specific configurations of previous models and allows users to create their own fishing programs. The environmental benefits of using it are considerable due to minimal pollution from equipment loss.

Unlocking new opportunities in land-based operations.

DNG by Slippurinn diversified product line includes solutions for landbased whitefish and saltfish processors as well as applications for liver and roe processing and canning operations. “For the land-based processing segment we offer a comprehensive range of equipment that covers every step of the processing line, including dynamic scales, graders, trimming lines and tub handling systems,” says Blöndal. “We have continued to develop these systems and have worked really well with clients around the world in this area. We have new items on the drawing board, and some are ready for release, like our new

production software that will be launched this spring in relation to our whole fish dynamic grader.”

Blöndal expresses optimism regarding the future of the company’s land-based processing portfolio. With several major processors in Iceland venturing into salmon farming, he anticipates significant growth in the aquaculture sector. “We are looking forward to unlocking new opportunities for innovation and collaboration for land-based processors,” he says. “We will include more applications for whitefish and aquaculture in our product development plan.”

Stronger R&D

Another important part of the company’s growth has been the establishment of a new product development center that will focus on designing and developing innovative equipment for better processing. According to Kristjánsson, research and development are the key to the company’s growth strategy for the coming years. The product development center is a logical step towards this goal, as DNG expands into new areas of the industry.

The projects of the center will be diverse and bring new products to market while opening doors to further ventures. “With the establishment of the research center, we are committed to continuously innovating solutions for the seafood industry, pushing the boundaries in every way possible,” says Kristjánsson. “The importance of knowledge and cooperation in product development is essential.”

By broadening its fish processing equipment range and implementing a robust R&D strategy, DNG by Slippurinn is poised to become a one-stop-shop for seafood processing equipment, meeting the ever-increasing demand for safe, efficient and effective processing solutions.
