A word from the Publisher Have you been out to eat lately? If not, we would like to let you know that the same reliable establishments are eager to please their loyal followers, and there are many more new places to try once again this year.

After our 10th Anniversary Edition last year, it got me to thinking … what amazing support we have for our dining guides and how amazing success in the restaurant industry affects everyone in the community over the years. It’s the long-term successes that keep the industry going with their wisdom and patience in the fluctuations that have occurred in recent years.

Our friends and neighbors are affected in the number of jobs available, in the ability to go out to eat and the money flowing from customer to restaurant, from the restaurant to product vendors and suppliers, who also work and live here. It’s a loop that involves everyone who lives in our neighborhoods, not just the businesses.

There have been more than a few falls with the changes due to the economy or other circumstances, and there are so many new places stepping up to the plate you wouldn’t know how much risk there is in going into the restaurant business. This year, as during the past two of the economic slump, there are just as many, if not more, recent openings for us to discover. In this issue we let you know about a few new renovations of the old and the enterprising of the new, to find a tasty restaurant in your neighborhood. There are just as many as ever that are eager to serve you.

And with the inspiring popularity of our weekly Sizzle’n Cuisine eNews and Web site, we love to keep you all posted on the latest culinary adventures online. Attending the Niche Magazine Conference in Tempe, Ariz., this past February, we found out that we are indeed doing something right with it. We won the Best Website award at the conference for our efforts!

This conference was well-attended by internationally known niche publications, and we are honored to be rewarded in such prestigious company.

suddenly history becomes a little richer in the North Idaho restaurant scene.

The new owners, Bob and Susan Short—who couldn’t bear to see one of their favorite historic eateries closed— have remodeled, painted, restored and renewed the old building. And, they’ve hired new staff and have brought back the home comfort foods that made this place famous for more than 50 years. The menu is still down home. and the neighborhood is grateful. So many in the community came together to re-open and revive The View … the owners are nothing short of grateful for the help and the support for their beloved café. Fans stopped in to monitor the progress of the renewal

and offered suggestions along the way.

Several neighbors volunteered their time to get The View back open and serving their community. One first-time visitor even offered his custom-made wall hooks for use in the bathrooms when he noticed there weren’t any.

On the menu at The View, breakfasts start at 6 am and still include the same biscuits and gravy that made them a roadside attraction for 50-plus years, along with breakfast burritos, buttermilk pancakes, eggs Benedict, muffins, omelets and scrambles. Lunches still offer milk shakes, soups and salads; and their famous half-pound burgers along with pot roast, chicken fried steak and fish and chips are the top sellers on the menu.

Now open and ready for the traffic to pause for a taste; nothing has really changed, the traditions remain the same, and yet, it’s all new at The View Café. 462109 Hwy 95, across from Lake Cocolalla (208) 265-0750

North Coeur d’Alene Paddy’s

The air has cleared at Paddy’s! Now open daily at 11 am, Paddy’s is pandering to the sports enthusiast with tons of TVs all around the bar and two very large projection TVs. The big news is that Paddy’s is now non-smoking! With nine pool tables, five dart boards and 13 beers on tap, commercial breaks are almost looked forward to!

Creative elegance is what comes to mind concerning the work of brother- and sister-in-law Andy and Becky Renfrew at the recently re-opened Pastry and More bakery shop. After six years at Cakes

By Us, it was time to move to a great new location. Located in the Northern Lights Mall near the corner of Appleway and Highway 95, this hot spot is sure to become the local favorite all over again. Specializing in gorgeous wedding cakes and delicate pastries, the pair also creates three-dimensional cakes like the bear skin rug and the 1960’s Volkswagen Bug on display in the store. There is a new feel inside the dining room and tasting area of the bakery where Andy and Becky have tried to make it a comfortable, welcoming environment for brides to come in and discuss wedding cakes. “I can’t imagine telling a bride ‘no.’ It’s her wedding," says Becky, "and we can do pretty much anything.” All cakes are made from scratch, and it makes a difference in the taste. Priest Lake New Owners at Millie’s in Priest Lake

Millie’s is one of Priest Lake’s gathering places. Established in 1943, Millie’s is now under new ownership. Butch and Michelle Bockmier and Michelle’s brother, Michael Smith, re-opened it November 2009. A new menu featuring Michael's hot wings with six different sauces and his secret rib recipe are the specialties of the house. The quest for the cold and mighty

Where do you go when you’re thirsty for the cold one? Where do you go when you want quality in what you’re drinking? Do you follow the masses or seek out the finer selections of ale? All questions that cross the beer lover’s mind when choosing a venue for shopping or enjoying that refreshing beer you crave.

There are far too few establishments that truly cater to the beer purist. But, there are some out there that do, some that think they do and some that just don’t know any better. Beer Geeks must unite, because it’s definitely worth the effort to let our favorite destinations know what we would like to be ordering from their beer list. Craft beer drinking has come a long way in recent years, and it’s the Beer Geeks that have brought it all on. Don’t be afraid to ask for something new.

Everyone that reads this will have very different tastes and, while the truth in your taste will guide your choices in where you shop or wet your whistle, this lament is to let those establishments know your tastes have changed! Hear now ye retailer, restaurant, night club and tavern keeper! Beer enthusiasts are fed up with that boring, yellow, overly fizzy beer that plagues our favorite stores and watering holes.

Ask them for that information, and you will be able to tell that not all of them are out for just a sale. Some of them really care about helping you to be able to sell the good stuff! Showing your clientele that you care about quality and diversity will allow you to reap those benefits and endear you to your customers who know they don’t have to settle for that big box brand at your place.

Coeur d’Alene Brewing Company 100 Celebrating 102 Years!

The original Coeur d’Alene Brewing Company was established on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene in 1908. The brewery closed following prohibition in the early 1920s but was the first brewery to open in Idaho after state laws became less restrictive in 1986. With the original three-story building near the NIC campus long gone, the brewery reopened at its present location on Lakeside Avenue in Downtown Coeur d’Alene in 1986—just in time to join the microbrew revolution.

Under the expert hands of Brew Master Laurie Kraus, who joined the crew in 1988, the brewery soon developed a reputation for producing award-winning handcrafted microbrews. In 1999, new owners revitalized the business, adding an additional brewery in the Steam Plant Grill in Spokane and

enlarging the Coeur d’Alene location by adding the Brewpub, which offers a wide-range selection of food, wine and beers brewed “in house.”

Today, the historic brewery and brewpub offers a popular tour of its facility and a lunch menu of tasty pub fare. It has become a great neighborhood hangout for friends to gather for a sip of a pub favorite such as Huckleberry Ale, or a pint of one of the seasonal brews, such as their summer offering of Strawberry Hefeweizen or Frozen Lake, a darker ale brewed to warm patrons up during the cold winter months. For the more adventurous, there is an occasional “Brewer’s Whim”—a unique beer “brewed when there is an opening in the brew schedule and there is something new we have been wanting to try,” according to Brew Master Laurie.

The Coeur d’Alene Brewing Company celebrated its 100th birthday in July 2008 with specially brewed commemorative beers and numerous events. Last year, the spring and summer months saw the unveiling of their Birthday Bock, Idaho Pale Lager tagged “Hot Foot IPL” and a 100-year barley wine.

A Chocolate Bock was introduced later in the season, with the brewery continuing to feature their Centennial Pale Ale, originally created for Idaho’s Centennial celebration in 1990 and first-place winner in the Great American Beer Festival the year it was introduced.

Tony’s on the Lake 58 years of Tony’s lakeside boat-up dining Tony’s on the Lake has a rich history of family.

Built as Jeanette’s Club in 1939 (ask more about this history when you dine with them), it was purchased by Tony Canerio in 1952, re-named Tony’s Supper Club, later sold to Ozzie Singer, then to Kathy Thomas and Nella Troy, who sold it to the D’Alessandro family in 2004. With architect Rann Haight, the restaurant has been remodeled, a deck overlooking the lake has been added, and in 2010, new docks installed.

The D’Alessandro family has a rich history of food. Ludvico D’Alessandro left Tuscany in 1908 with a love of Italian food that has been passed on through generations to great granddaughter Cheyenne, who attended culinary school in Florence, Italy and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.

She also had the opportunity to live extensively with family in Tuscany, experiencing the best of Italian family cooking.

Tony’s on the Lake offers gorgeous lakeside dining in a wonderful retreat from the bustle of downtown. Takara Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar Keeping sushi fresh in Coeur d’Alene since 1992 It was a bold move for Ryuhei Tanaka to relocate to Coeur d’Alene from Seattle to open the area’s first Japanese Restaurant—Takara Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar—in 1992. Ryuhei transferred to the area with Takara’s then owner, and a year later, when the original owner decided she did not want to stay in Coeur d’Alene, Ryuhei took over the restaurant.

With 15 years knowledge and experience (today, he has more than 32 years experience), Ryuhei came to bring Japanese cuisine to the rugged terrain and tastes of this American woodland community. He introduced North Idaho to sushi, and, in case you were unaware, this was an ambitious project at the time.

Ryuhei says that many of his now regular customers came to know Japanese cuisine initially by going to Takara to try it with their friends or relatives from

out of town, and now they’re hooked. He managed to accomplish a difficult task, making Takara a well-liked restaurant in what was then a meat-andpotatoes-only community.

Seventeen years later, the tasty and light traditional Japanese favorites are still on the menu, and Ryuhei says he continues to see the annual growth of sushi sales in Coeur d’Alene. What once made up only 10 percent of Takara’s sales today makes up 60 percent. In the beginning, Ryuhei recalls guests being “scared” of sushi, but now, people are familiar with it, and it can be found on several menus throughout Coeur d’Alene. And … you can even find it at local grocery stores these days! But remember, it was Takara that started it all in North Idaho.

What does Ryuhei attribute to Takara’s ongoing success? “Keeping nice food on the plate and a clean and soothing atmosphere,” he says, adding the importance of fresh seafood.

Java on Sherman Serving the community more than JUST coffee for 16 years In 1994, Todd Rippo first opened the doors of Java on Sherman to the public. What was formerly Roger’s Ice Cream, and before that a bank, pharmacy …, is now one of the most welcoming cafés in Downtown Coeur d’Alene. Current owners Dave Patterson and his wife Lindsay are continuing to keep that tradition alive today. Dave was introduced to the business in 1993 when he started working as a barista for a local coffeehouse in Portland, Ore., which he was drawn to by “the smell of fresh brewed coffee at 5am!” Sixteen years later, he is the owner of what he says is “a pretty cool coffeehouse in an amazing place.”

Dave and Lindsay first met at a coffee shop, and it was their dream to one day own one of their own. The two often visited Coeur d’Alene, as Dave’s family had moved to the area more than 20 years ago. During their numerous visits, they found Downtown Coeur d’Alene to be charming and thought it the ideal place to raise a family. Today, their vision has been

315 Martinis, Tapas & Dinner Restaurant at the Greenbriar Inn Providing hospitality to North Idaho for 25 years The Greenbriar Inn, once known as the Wallace Apartments, was originally built as a boarding house in 1908 and would later became a bordello, a rooming house for Burlington Northern Railway, headquarters for Health Education and Welfare, and a nunnery.

Then, in 1984, after years of inoccupancy, Bob and Kris McIlvenna, former stockbrokers, inspired by the hospitality and charm of inns and bed and breakfasts visited in trips abroad, purchased the property, renovated it and created the Greenbriar Bed and Breakfast Inn in Coeur d’Alene, which opened the following year.

“We wanted a slower-paced lifestyle for our children,” says Kris. “And with our determination to succeed, we soon learned the true meaning of sweat equity.”

Chef Matt Curmi, the Bistro’s head chef, was born in Scotland to an English mother and Maltese father. Matt learned to cook during high school in Malta, a European country off the coast of Sicily. His education is a combination not only of formal instruction, but of culinary instruction brought on through his world travels. His culinary journeys have taken him throughout the US and the UK, but also to Spain and other regions of the Mediterranean. Here Matt brings these many cuisine types to the Northwest.

Chris’ philosophy on service and his staff in general is to “hire people smarter than I am, give them what they need and let them work …,” he says. And it works very well here. All the staff seem to enjoy one another’s company and especially the customers they serve.

Server Lyndsey says that they enjoy accommodating the customer’s individual tastes and remembering what they like. “We all get along, we have a positive environment, the customers are fun and the regulars get to know us. We love to spoil our customers,” she says.

Chris feels that greeting someone at the door is the most important first step to creating that ‘spoiled’ feeling to the customers: “If someone was coming into your house, wouldn’t you see them, say hello and run over to greet them?” he asks. And they all make sure that their guests are greeted at the door.

With spring comes the planting of the herbs! The Bistro has its own organic herb garden, and they use it. They bring in the dirt and plant, nurture and harvest their own basils, nasturtiums, squash, tomatoes, garlic, chives and whatever will fit into their garden space.

This makes for great patio dining in the garden in summertime. They have been known to take a team out to foray for mushrooms together when in season.

The wine list is rich and the list of wines by the glass can also be enjoyed as flights of wine. It includes 15 glass pours and five after-dinner wines to go along with their housemade dessert list. The Tuesday wine special is perfect for that weeknight dinner out, with 40-percent off bottle wine with the purchase of dinner for two. The ales, beer and hard cider list offers a nice variety of craft micros and imports as well.

Top it all off with entertainment that includes live music ranging from jazz to acoustic rock on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and you have a neighborhood favorite that brings relaxed casual fine dining to an exceptional new level.

They started with a dumpy little shack and have been instrumental in transforming the neighborhood that Capone’s Coeur d’Alene resides in— midtown. Now, with the new community beautification project and new businesses in the neighborhood, the Capone’s feel that midtown has really become a destination of its own. The project was tough for businesses, but they felt that the city was very helpful in getting them through the summer of 2009 when the streets were blocked off. And now with the completion of the sidewalks, streets and new public art and bus waiting stations, the neighborhood is ready for a vibrant summer sidewalk dining and shopping scene, and Capone’s is a huge part of that.

momentum going. Tom is now making his own bread on a daily basis at the Post Falls location, and the difference is notable when it comes to the sandwiches.

He has created his own starter with some advice from a professional baker who helped him learn the art of bread making, and he became hooked on crafting breads. He keeps the starter with him no matter where he goes. They have always hand crafted their own pizza dough and hand tossed it, and it is repeatedly voted on

But, though they have an enormous following of pizza lovers, the boneless hot wings are the No. 1 item that surprises people. They are not your typical pub fare, but with their own special sauces, they’re one of the biggest sellers on the menu. After all, they go perfectly with the 41 taps selection of beer available at the Coeur d’Alene location.

On the menu, scratch is the mode and they make their own stock with choppings from the kitchen, they use everything from the kitchen and even grow and serve some of their own vegetables. For the entire month of August, dubbed “tomato month,” they bring in the tomato harvest from the home garden to share with the family. They offer the fresh homeripened tomatoes for the Caprese and other salads, pizza toppings and slicing for sandwiches because “the taste can’t be beat,” says Tom. They buy a lot of ingredients from Pilgrim’s Market, including the yeast

for their bread and the vinegars—because they feel it’s the best available and that Pilgrim’s has ingredients that no one else has.

Tom would like to open more Capone’s in new locations, but Teresa says it's just because he’s bored: “He likes to create new projects, and that’s how we’ve grown.”

They credit their staff for making Capone’s a success. Teresa says, “We demonstrate our passion for the business and our staff participates—we wash dishes, empty garbage if we see the need, and so do they. There’s no job that any of us won’t do, and there has never been.” She feels that the staff keeps the customers engaged, entertained and makes them feel like family, so they all have a sense of belonging there together, all while having a good time.

The Capones are now incorporating more live music special concerts on Saturday nights and are considering adding most Fridays to the lineup as well, so stay tuned. From solo guitars to full bands, the local live music scene provides them with all the talent they need to get the party started … and keep the family happy!

White House Grill Feeding and Entertaining Guests Since 1996 This past winter was pretty incredible, but rewind 14 years to the huge snow storm of 1996, and that’s the year White House Grill opened its doors to its small seven-table bistro in Post Falls, serving dishes with as much garlic as one can handle and offering its crazy owner, Raci Erdem, to keep you entertained and coming back for more. The Jacklin Arts & Cultural Center puts their commercial kitchen to good use hosting cooking classes with area chefs. With a focus on the culinary arts, the classes also feature wine tastings while class attendees learn a variety of foods from around the globe.

What's Cookin' events complement the lineup of cultural events held in this historical building. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the upstairs gallery features local and regional artists, and the main level venue is perfect for small concerts and community events. The kitchen is located in the basement banquet hall and perfect for hosting the classes.

Students here are enjoying learning about the flair of delicious Latin dishes from Chef Colomba Aguilar of Cafe Carambola. Other participating chefs have included Angelo Brunson of Angelo's Ristorante and Chef Giuliana Rogers, a native of Sardina, Italy. Classes generally run $50 per person, including wine and items prepared in the classes.

Hayden and the Hayden Lake area are no exception to the growth in Kootenai County and are becoming more beautiful each passing day. Hayden’s new main street on Government Way brings a new sense of community to the neighborhood, and residents, both new and established, are here for the rural small-town feel. The culianary scene here is deliciously both gourmet and family freindly with vibrant family restaurants, specialty shopping and the Kootenai County Farmers’ Market.

Hayden Lake hasn’t often been thought of as a happening place, but all that has changed now that Hayden has its own new main street between Prairie and Hayden avenues on Government Way. Hayden city officials are working with local businesses on events that will enhance their new sense of place in this growing area. Free summer concerts in the park run from July through August.

Hayden is famous for its long-standing culinary event, Daanen Delicatessen’s Oktoberfest, held annually the last Saturday in September. This marks the 16th year of the event, and the whole block gets involved with the fun. This is an event for all ages with music, food, beer and wine, like no other in Kootenai County.

in high school. Jim says, “As a general manager, I absolutely love the company I work for.” He worked his way through the ranks, and because the company prioritizes promoting from within, he had the opportunity to become the general manager in Hayden.

Although he admits the restaurant was still in its “honeymoon” period—that time when it’s still as new to the staff as it is to him—Jim says, “I’ve been very fortunate to be able to go into a fully operating success. All I had to do was walk in and start greeting people … get to know the existing staff and customers.”

He says it’s all about managing people with respect, and he feels that it

makes a big difference with their philosophy of making a personal connection to the customers. That Ciao Mambo

philosophy is for everyone to touch the table in some way. From the warm greeting at the door to the presentation of the steaming hot meal, everyone enjoys the participation. The busser fills the water glass, the server skillfully writes their name upside down on the table and starts the conversation about the food and wine; the kitchen crew meticulously prepare the dishes and then send them to the table for presentation. Creating that Mambo experience is the team’s pleasure.

The Mambo experience means not only excellent friendly service, but great attention details. Getting to know their guests all the while making sure their night out is nothing short of unforgettable, this time and every time to come.

The staff has been there a while. Most started with the opening, and they have been good at keeping the customer No. 1. Even new servers feel welcome and at home with this philosophy in place. Amanda Corning started earlier this year and says enthusiastically, “I love it, love the environment and the people that work here. We have fun.”

Everyone in the house pays attention to how their customers are being taken care of and will gladly take action if needed. The whole staff is high energy, and to keep things interesting and exciting, they have little competitions and games to keep enthusiasm high.

Jim says that the time of day he likes best is between 4 and 5 pm, when the music comes on, the staff starts rolling in and they all get amped up for the night’s service. The servers get spooled up on the nights wine feature

conversing about the bouquets and tasting notes they find in that particular wine. Letting the staff taste the wine makes it a lot easier to explain to guests and make recommendations on pairing. Then, it's on to his pep talk before the doors open: “Remember, everybody leaves happy, no matter what.”

Being a dinner only establishment, the staff is fresh, dressed to the nines and ready to show the guests how it is done. Jim knows it makes a difference to the customers who are there to wind down, have some great food and be pampered.

When it comes to the menu, they take great pride in being a made to order scratch kitchen where dishes are prepared in house right in front of the guests. They are not a typical chain with mass produced products, but a restaurant company that exemplifies that mom-and-pop back-alley Italian with-a-twist establishment which is how it all began with their first location in Whitefish, Montana.

Jim says they do a ton of pizza. Hayden must be a pizza loving place because its one of their biggest sellers. It also contributes to the atmosphere of fun to have the guys behind the counter in their open exhibition kitchen throwing pizza dough in the air as well. They take great care in making a great tasting pizza, layering sauce and just the right amount of toppings and cheese without smothering the flavors of each.

The big surprise on the menu? It’s the nachos. Nachos, you say? Si. Nachos All’ Italiana is their No. 1 surprise. This extreme vertical layering of creamy parmesan sauce, meatballs and prosciutto over lightly fried lasagna pieces is the biggest head turner as they are carried to the table, the most asked about and it's one of the most ordered items on the menu.

When it comes to everything Latino, they are on the beat; finding the restaurants, the chefs, the shops and the events that characterize Hispanic food in the Northwest.

The network brings its first show, “In The Kitchen with Mike Gonzalez,” to the table with features on cooking demonstrations and recipes, where to find your favorite Latin foods and the best places to share ideas with other people. Their mission is to provide viewers with the highest quality video, insruction and yes, entertainment for a great experience.

The Hispanic Food Network is the brain child of Mike Gonzales, who was born and raised in Miami, Fla., and has a love for Cuban and Latino food. Mike, with 14 years of broadcasting skills, along with partners Dwight Finney and Louie Flores III, have created the plan to put the spotlight on Hispanic food and culture in the Northwest.

The state of Washington’s Latino population is topping more than a million and a half now, and the area is abundant with great Hispanic food. They intend to show you just where to find it all.

“Food means sharing and community, which goes hand in hand with culture. There is something powerful and deep-seated about the

pleasure and bonding that occurs when we come together to share a meal. Food equals community, and community equals food, and some incredibly tasty food,” says Mike.

What makes the Hispanic Food Network the place for a little or a lot of Latin flavor? Mike remarks that viewers will learn about places to find a little Latin flair in Spokane area eateries, how to prepare Hispanic dishes at home and learn “the story behind the food.”

Latin culture is blossoming here in the Inland Northwest, and the HFNTV crew’s love for that food and culture keeps them reaching out to the small communities that define Eastern Washington, including the Tri-Cities and Walla Walla. The team is working to create that Latin culture bond by bringing awareness of those small communities into focus.

OK, so it’s definitely not New York City or New Orleans, but Spokane is our nearest urban cultural center. Many pass through the area because of the medical centers and convention center, which bring many visitors to the Inland Northwest. The beauty of Spokane’s proximity to Coeur d’Alene is that it’s just a short drive from our recreational paradise in North Idaho!

Spokane’s largest events draw thousands of Idahoans to attend concerts, Broadway shows, art events, conventions and trade shows at the Spokane Arena, Convention Center and the INB Performing Arts Center. When attending an event across the border, consider making dinner reservations and possibly an overnight stay at one of the hotels that are unique to Spokane.

Downtown destinations that offer a unique overnight experience you won’t find anywhere but in Spokane include the Post Street Ale House at the Hotel Lusso and the Palm Court Grill and Safari Room at the Davenport Hotel, Spencer’s at the Doubletree Hotel and Scratch at the Montvale Hotel. Today, Pilgrim’s occupies 25,000 square feet and is the perfect place for North Idahoans to pursue an Organic, natural and healthy lifestyle.

At Pilgrim’s Deli, resident chef Dane Rice and his prodigious staff are, as Dane explains, providing customers with “food choices that prevent them from having to worry about diabetes in 10 years.” With their expanding grill menu, rotating deli selections and scrumptious soup and salad bar, Dane and the Deli staff are keeping the creativity and local vibe resonating. Everything from their traditional gyro with tzatziki sauce to their delectable lasagna is daily made from scratch using a wealth of local ingredients. It is reassuring to have a place where lunch is not only delicious, but also healthy. After all, what other café or deli can tell you exactly where your burger came from?

And this is just one of the ways that Pilgrim’s is conceiving to guide customers through dietary and lifestyle changes as they realize their personal health goals.

For the past year, Pilgrim’s Health and Education Center has been a bit of a mecca for distinctive natural health educators, hosting international experts and PhDs such as Jordan Rubin, Ann Louise Gittleman and Udo Erasmus.

It’s not easy endeavoring to be the natural food store of the future, but Joe makes it look effortless and thrilling as he launches new enterprises, offers exciting community events and demonstrates his commitment to education that is “a human right with immense power to transform.” (Kofi Annan) In February 2010, Joe launched Coeur d’Alene’s first Vegetarian Club potluck. Whether you are a vegetarian or not, this club has something to offer everyone! Hosted by Pilgrim’s, they meet every other month to share a potluck dinner, exchange recipes and enjoy quality lectures and educational films.

Lone Canary Winery Now sharing space with Caterina Winery in the Broadview Dairy building Spokane’s historic Broadview Dairy building has been home to Caterina Winery since 1993 and now has a new winery joining them at this landmark location. The Broadview Dairy building was built in 1920 and Don Townshend, owner/winemaker of Townshend Cellar, purchased the assets of Caterina Winery last year and also Lone Canary Winery. It just seemed natural for the wineries to be at the same location for convenience sake. Don Townshend and Dave Harvey are making wine for both of the "new" wineries. Lone Canary wines will be more new world in style, and Caterina wines will have a focus on some Italian varietals, along with traditional varietals. Lone Canary has become known for several award-winning wines, most recently in February 2010 with a 91 Point rank “Exceptional” for the 2006 Rouge and an 89 Point rank for the 2005 Proprietors’ Reserve at BTI’s World Wine Championships and won accolades from Wine Press Northwest and Wine Enthusiast magazines for the 2008 Pinot Grigio and 2007 Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc.

Moving Lone Canary Winery in with Caterina Winery gives visitors another line of wines to try while at the tasting room and more to offer for participation in Downtown Spokane’s special events and tastings.

With a new remodel and extra floor space in the tasting room, it’s the perfect space for reserved private parties as well.

Winemaker Don has been making wine since 1995 and Townshend Cellar wines are well known throughout the Inland Northwest and one of Spokane’s biggest selling wine brands. His numerous accolades began with the first wine he produced, his 1998 Cabernet winning the Wine Press Northwest’s Fab Cab award. Don’s winery grew from the two barrels he began with and now makes more than 15,000 cases, and more than 20 different wines are available.

Don states that the Townshend Cellar wines will remain available for tasting and purchasing at the Greenbluff tasting room which is open noon to 6 pm Friday through Sunday at 16112 N. Greenbluff Rd. Ground has been broken for a new and larger winery and tasting room a few minutes away up on top of Greenbluff, and Don hopes to move operations there early next spring. There are currently no plans to offer the Townshend Cellar wines at the Caterina/Lone Canary location, as the two wineries will offer a wide variety of wines for visitors to taste!

The Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre presents its 43rd season with four shows this summer. Now bringing full-scale Broadway musicals to the stage in Schuler Auditorium at North Idaho College each summer, the Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre offers 12 weeks of 36 performances during June, July and August.

It’s a perfect cool down on a hot summer’s day for nearly 35,000 live theatre lovers throughout the Inland Northwest each season.

One of the Northwest’s premier professional companies, many of the performers have received national recognition and have gone on to appear in film, television and other professional venues including Broadway stage and tours. They also feature live orchestrations performed by the region’s most accomplished musicians.

The first performance this summer is “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” from June 12-26, followed by the classic fairy tale “Cinderella” July 3-17; a musical set in Grand Ole Opry country, “Pump Boys and Dinettes” July 23-Aug. 1; and the musical comedy “Hairspray” Aug. 7-21.

GETTING THERE it’s about a two-hour drive from coeur d’alene to Lewiston, idaho. Drive 84 miles south on Hwy 95 to Moscow, idaho, and another 32 miles down to the lewis clark valley. on the way back, if headed to pullman, go 32 miles north on Hwy 195 in washington to pullman, then hwy 27 to palouse, wash, and across hwy 6 to hwy 95 N. for the trip back.

Drive down on any given Friday evening for a start on the weekend at The Red Door. Try “The Modern” cocktail, and with a constantly evolving menu, there will be something outstanding and interesting for everyone.

Enjoy an overnight stay at The Best Western University Inn or La Quinta Inn in Moscow.

The Breakfast Club or One World Cafe will give you a good start to the day, and a little shopping is in order. Start with a stop-in for some Cowgirl Chocolates, where you will find the coolest spicy chocolates this side of the Pecos. Pick up a pound of their new Spicy Cherry Mango Macadamia Nut Dark Chocolate Bark, and possibly stop in at Ferdinand’s at the WSU Creamery in Pullman for some of that famous Cougar Gold cheese.

A round of golf at Palouse Ridge in Pullman is a must for golfers. This course is rated by Golf Digest and Golfweek as the No. 2 Best New Courses of 2009 and considered one of the best collegiate courses in the country.

Enjoy the view overlooking the green with lunch at their Banyans restaurant, and then stop in at nearby Merry Cellars for a taste of their award-winning wines. Merry Cellars is a renowned local winery making hand-crafted premium wines that will impress you enough

to take several of them home with you.

Heading back to Moscow for dinner would be a prime time to enjoy the sheer sweetness of Nectar at the close of the day. For the love of food and wine, Nectar restaurant and wine bar is one that shouldn’t be missed on a trip to the Palouse. This cozy café has a most excellent selection of wines and offers a variety of flights that allow you to taste several very nice wines without buying the whole bottle.

Unless, of course, you find one you simply must continue on with.

The attention to detail is apparent in everything they serve, and the menu offers a fabulous array of starters, inventive salads and their unique mac and cheese made with Cougar Gold. Entrées include pastas to steak and fish with a Nectar flair all their own.

Order a soufflé for dessert early in the meal, if available. The atmosphere here is one to savor as much as the meal and will leave you completely satisfied … and craving more.

Stay, eat, recreate and celebrate. Then rest well for one more night and you’re ready for whatever meandering path you choose to take back to Coeur d’Alene.

It’s about 84 miles and takes about an hour and a half to get to Moscow driving south on Hwy 95 directly to Moscow.

On returning, if you are coming from Pullman, just head north on Hwy 27 to Palouse then east on Hwy 6 to Hwy 95 to get back to the Coeur d’Alene area.
