Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift Dr. Vaughn Vandegrift was appointed the seventh chancellor of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on July 1, 2004. Emphasizing teaching, research and public service programs, SIUE is a fully-accredited public institution— beautifully situated in Edwardsville on 2,660 acres just 25 miles from St. Louis—awarding degrees in 44 baccalaureate and 64 master’s programs encompassing the arts and sciences, nursing, education, business and engineering. The Schools of Pharmacy and Dental Medicine award first professional degrees, the D.M.D. and the Pharm.D. For the fourth consecutive year, SIUE has been heralded by U.S. News and World Report for its Senior Assignment Program, an integrative learning experience required of all seniors prior to graduation. U.S. News lists SIUE among the top 10 public universities in the Midwest-Master’s category for the second consecutive year. The main campus includes University Park, a research park established to enhance economic development. The Edwardsville campus also is supplemented by campuses in East St. Louis and Alton. Since the time of his appointment, Vandegrift has been instrumental in guiding the University toward fulfillment of its vision to be recognized nationally, as a premier Metropolitan University, for the excellence of its programs and development of professional and community leaders. He developed a plan for achievement of the vision by the year 2015 that combines the values and goals of the University with knowledge gained from his 33year career in higher education. Vandegrift is a New Jersey native who came to SIUE from Georgia Southern University, a comprehensive, residential university of 16,000 students, where he served as Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Chief Information Officer and Professor of Chemistry. His areas of responsibility included six academic colleges, graduate studies, international studies, information technology services, the library, continuing education and public service, a museum, a wildlife education center and a botanical garden. He also served as Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at Montclair State University in New Jersey, the second largest university in the state of New Jersey. He served as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at Murray State University in Kentucky and held earlier faculty positions at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Illinois State University. Vandegrift has been the author or co-author of grants resulting in more than $3 million in funding from various sources during his career, including support from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the National Science Foundation, the Fats and Proteins Research Foundation and the AT&T Corporation. He has also been active in working with foundations and donors who have made major gifts in support of the institutions where he has worked. Dr. Vandegrift is author of more than 40 professional publications and presentations including works published in Biochemistry, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry and Methods in Enzymology. Vandegrift is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Vandegrift currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois; University Park, SIUE; Focus St. Louis; St. Louis Regional Commerce and Growth Association; United Way of Greater St. Louis; the Southwestern Illinois Higher Education Consortium (SIHEC); the Southern Illinois Collegiate Common Market (SICCM) and the Executive Council of The Alliance of Edwardsville-Glen Carbon. He has been elected into the honor societies of Omicron Delta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi. He has provided service on boards in support of science education and has been listed in Who’s Who in the East, American Men and Women of Science and Who’s Who in Frontier Science and Technology. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio University in biochemistry studying the effects of nuclear histone proteins on the conformation of DNA. His bachelor’s and master’s in chemistry were obtained at Montclair State University. Vandegrift and his wife, Sue, are the parents of three adult children. Beth is an attorney, while David and Mark are both employed in private business. Vaughn and Sue are the proud grandparents of two granddaughters, Vaughn and Camilla.

Director of Athletics Brad Hewitt Dr. Bradley L. Hewitt has served as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at SIUE since August 2002. Dr. Hewitt served 13 years in numerous positions at SIUE before stepping in as the seventh Director of Athletics in the school’s history. Hewitt’s charge was to regain SIUE’s storied national success of the 1970s and 1980s (16 national championships) and expand that success across a broad-based athletic program. Since his start as the Director of Athletics, 37 Cougar teams have competed in their respective NCAA individual or team championships. Hewitt has helped elevate SIUE’s previous best 131st place finish in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup to a 78th place finish in 2004, a 37th place finish in 2005, a 4th place finish in 2006, and an 11th place finish in 2007. For the 2006-07 seasons, the Cougars won both the prestigious Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Sports Trophy and the Commissioner’s Cup. The Cougars won the All-Sports Trophy with 141.5 points, the highest total points recorded in a single season since the award was conceived more than 25 years ago. The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the program that produces the overall best finish in the league’s seven “core” sports. SIUE posted top five finishes in six of the seven sports that count in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, including conference titles in men’s soccer and softball. Also considered are volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball. The pinnacle of achievement was a 2007 national championship in softball. In 1994, Hewitt, in his role as Assistant Athletic Director, served as the University’s venue manager for the United States Olympic Festival-’94 track and field and wrestling events. Since 1994, Hewitt has held several positions at SIUE including acting Chief Executive Officer of the SIUE Foundation and acting Vice Chancellor of University Relations (1998-2000), adjunct graduate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education (1996-2003), and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Athletic Development (1994-1998 and 2000-present). From 1995-1998 and 2000-2002, Hewitt was the internal and external liaison for the Vice Chancellor of University Relations overseeing Alumni Services; SIUE Foundation; Public Affairs; Photographic Services; and University Graphics, Publications, and Printing. Hewitt has a diverse background in intercollegiate athletics. Before coming to SIUE, he was the director of sports marketing and associate head football coach at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa; the recruiting coordinator and assistant football coach at Southern Illinois University Carbondale; and recruiting coordinator, track event manager and assistant football coach at his alma mater The University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Hewitt earned a bachelor’s in mathematics in 1981 from Central Missouri as well as a master’s in athletic administration in 1982. Hewitt completed his doctorate in education at SIUC in 1994. Hewitt has been a highly-active member of the area community serving as a member of the board of directors for the St. Louis Sports Commission since 1999, a member of the board of directors for the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Governors for the Prairie State Games and as a member of the State Games of America Head Coach Sandy Montgomery, Athletic Director Dr. Brad Hewitt, Kay Hagelberg and Board of Directors. He is presently serving his second term as a Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift at the SIUE Jacket Ceremony. member of the Edwardsville District 7 School Board. In 2006, Hewitt completed the executive management program at the Sports Management Institute which provides specialized executive management programs for sports management professionals. The Sports Management Institute was developed in 1989 as a joint venture of the athletic departments and business administration schools of the University of Southern California, the University of Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina. Significant fundraising success (especially in facility development) has been a capstone of Hewitt’s professional career. Since 2000 Hewitt was instrumental in securing several multi-million dollar facility gifts and pledges ($10 million plus in total) for the University. These facilities gifts helped build the 12,000 sq. ft. Birger Hall (SIUE’s Foundation and Alumni Building), the 1,500 seat SimmonsCooper Baseball Complex, and the 5,000 sq. ft. SIUE softball stadium/clubhouse. He was a significant member of the SIUE Foundation team that saw exponential growth in the Foundation’s annual giving campaign and endowment from 1995-2002. Since rejoining Cougar Athletics in 2002, he has focused on increasing the athletic endowment, doubling the number of endowed scholarships. Hewitt and his wife Kay, a professional educator, reside in Edwardsville. Their daughter Loren is a 2007 graduate of SIUE and tennis alumnae, and their son Matthew is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a major in mechanical engineering.

Season Prospectus “Just win baby” may as well be the mantra of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball team. Head Coach Sandy Montgomery’s team has won 30 or more games in 14 seasons, including posting a mark of 40-10 last year. The Cougars have won 40 or more games in five consecutive seasons. “As everyone has figured out now with my program, we play to win,” Montgomery said. “That will be no different this year.” 2010 marks the final season of reclassification for the softball team. As a “fast-tracked” sport, along with men’s soccer, softball was required to complete only two years of transition to NCAA Division I as opposed to four years required of the other SIUE athletic programs. “Last year we weren’t really sure where we were going into the year,” Montgomery added. “We finished 40-10, and from everybody’s standpoint we were probably a little better than they thought we were going to be. Now they expect that.” The Cougars will take the field with 12 of 19 players on the roster who are either sophomores or juniors. Eight players on the roster are new to SIUE, with four freshmen, one sophomore walk-on, one junior walk-on, and two juniors transfers. The Cougars will field only two seniors, infielder Lauren Zembruski (Minooka) and outfielder Chaleen Rumpf (New Lenox). “We have a very young team,” Montgomery said. “We have a lot of young players who need to gain a lot of experience in a short amount of time.” SIUE lost five seniors to graduation, and Montgomery knows that this year’s team will have to account for that. “Obviously when you lose any seniors, no matter who they are, when they are big contributors, that creates a void that you have to fill,” she said. “I have no doubt our returners will step up and fill that void.” Junior Erika Taylor (Boonville, Ind.) will fill the role of No. 1 pitcher for the Cougars. “Erika had a great season for us last year, and she has evolved into our No. 1 pitcher as it should be,” Montgomery said. Montgomery has added junior college transfer Ali Downing (Ottumwa, Iowa) from Indian Hills Community College as well as freshman Lindsey Coleman (Crestwood). “Ali has done very well,” Montgomery said. “She is a tough kid and fits the mold of my team very well.” “Lindsey is throwing hard and gaining a command of her pitches,” Montgomery continued. “I foresee lots of good things from my pitching staff.” Outside of pitching, SIUE returns four of its top six hitters, including seniors Zembruski and Rumpf. “They have been with me for four years,” Montgomery said of her seniors. “They have been good role models. They understand our program and what it’s about. That is why I don’t have team captains. My seniors are my leaders.” Zembruski, an NCAA Division I All-Mideast Region first team selection, led the Cougars with a .373 batting average while starting all 50 games at third base. Zembruski also led the team in home runs (seven) and RBIs (39). She also paced the team with 32 walks, an on-base percentage of .497, and a .649 slugging percentage. Rumpf, who also started all 50 games, was fourth on

the team with a .315 average. She was third with four home runs and fifth with 20 RBIs. She led the team with 17 stolen bases. Montgomery said Rumpf’s role with the team will be changing. “She will be hitting in an RBI spot for us,” Montgomery said. “She has been a perennial nine-hole hitter for three years. That was a good spot for her with the people around her and her speed. Now I want to get her a few more at-bats.” “I am very thankful to have them both,” Montgomery added of her seniors. “They knew their last two years they wouldn’t have the opportunity to compete for championships. I am thankful they chose to stay here and help us build this program at the Division I level.” Montgomery has three juniors on the roster (aside

from Taylor and Downing). Only Kasey Schlafke (Dallas Center, Iowa) is a returner. Schlafke hit .259 last season, good enough for sixth on the team. She finished second on the team with five home runs and added 18 RBIs. Schlafke started all 50 games at shortstop and is likely to anchor the middle infield again. “She plays a very good shortstop for us,” Montgomery said. “She understands the game and what it takes defensively.” Transfer Laurie Siebert (Sugar Grove) joins the team after playing at Mississippi State University where she saw time in 20 games as a sophomore. “She’s fitting in well at third base for us defensively,” Montgomery said of Siebert. “She can possibly fill a designated player role for us offensively. She was hitting in the SEC (Southeastern Conference) so she has a lot of experience and maturity as a hitter.” Amy Apa (Pekin) joins the team, after showing well at a walk-on tryout in the fall. “She understands her role. She’ll be coming off the bench as a pinch runner,” Montgomery said. The deepest class is the sophomores with eight on the Cougar roster. Of the eight, seven are returners for SIUE. Whitney Davis (Cayuga, Ind.) headlines the second-year players. Davis finished 2009 with a .371 batting average, leaving her just two points behind Zembruski for the team lead. Davis started 38 games as a freshman. “She is coming off a great freshman year,” Montgomery said of the Cougar first baseman. “That won’t be easy to repeat as a sophomore.” Three sophomores will compete for time in the outfield for SIUE. (Sherman), and Ellese Lawrence (Clyde, N.C.) could all see time in the outfield. Montgomery said Barron will also likely hit at the top of the lineup. “She has tremendous speed, and she is learning how to hit away. If she can have a good year in the leadoff spot, she’ll help the remainder of the lineup,” Montgomery said. Montgomery sees Fulginiti as a versatile player who could also see time on the infield. “She’ll continue to improve and she’ll see some time in the outfield,” Montgomery said. “She’ll be a backup on the infield as well, but she’ll be fighting for time in the outfield.” Montgomery said Lawrence, who hit a home run and added eight RBIs as a freshman, could be a threat at the plate. “She is a big strong kid who could become a feared hitter in our league,” Montgomery said. “I know she is working hard to do that.” Two other sophomores, Kay Hagelberg (Ankeny, Iowa) and Paige Sheeder (Davenport, Iowa), will both see time behind the plate. “Kay is a very good defensive catcher for us,” Montgomery said. “She handles our pitchers very well. She understands the game and is very level-headed.” “Paige is going to see some time catching,” Montgomery said. “She is very athletic. She is working on refining her hitting mechanics. When she does that, she is going to be a big offensive threat.” Megan Murphy (Casey) is a true utility player for the Cougars who could make an impact at a variety of positions. “She is a hard-nosed, hard-working kid,” Montgomery said. “Those are the kids who thrive with me. She may not make every play, but she’s going to give her best effort to do so.” Mackenzi Fairley (Quincy) rounds out the deep sophomore class. Fairley is another player who earned a spot after the fall walk-on tryout. Unlike the other two walk-ons, Fairley could see some playing time aside from a pinch-running. “She pitched in high school, and we’ll work her out there as well,” Montgomery said. “Mackenzi may see an inning here or there.” Three freshmen aside from Coleman were added to the Cougars’ roster for 2010. Walk-on Katie Trombetta (Brighton) joins Samantha Stanicek (Lockport) and Taylor Tooley (Joliet) to round out the team. “Katie will be an integral part of our success coming off the bench as a pinch runner,” Montgomery said. Stanicek is a utility player who Montgomery believes can help the Cougars at the plate. “As an incoming freshman, she can come in – especially offensively, and contribute,” Montgomery said. Montgomery believes Tooley could contribute at various positions. “She’s a tremendous hitter and has a very strong arm,” Montgomery said. For the last season of transition, Montgomery believes it is a certain type of player that will help the Cougars be successful in 2010. “You can’t teach winning,” Montgomery said. “Kids have to understand what it takes and the sacrifice and the commitment and the effort that goes into being successful on a consistent basis.”

The Cougar Softball Experience Kasey Schlafke

Erika Taylor

Lauren Zembruski

Being from Iowa, I came on my visit not knowing much about SIUE. As soon as I arrived on campus, it was obvious to me that this university was a classy place. I was immediately drawn to the softball program’s winning tradition and the coaches’ passion for softball. After watching one practice, it was clear that the team had a dedicated work ethic and a strong sense of camaraderie. I knew I wanted to be an SIUE Cougar.

I came to SIUE because the campus is beautiful and provides a business school ranked in the nation. Along with that, the softball program’s success rate seems to consistently increase and that’s exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to play for a team that was never satisfied with “good enough” and you have that mind-set with this program.

Playing Division I softball has always been my dream. Coming to a university with the chance of winning a national championship in Division II, and then getting to play Division I, is having the best of both worlds. The intense work ethic of each individual towards one team goal, and the constant push from the coaching staff has made us all better people as well as student-athletes. I have met amazing people here and have had the best teammates you could ever ask for.

Ali Downing I chose to come to SIUE because of its outstanding softball tradition and the respected business program. I also loved the campus and the welcoming team atmosphere. Overall, it was just a great fit for me athletically and academically.

Chaleen Rumpf When I visited SIUE I was immediately impressed by the facilities and team rapport. The athletic director’s commitment to education and graduation was apparent. Since SIUE offered me with the opportunity to excel both academically and athletically. I knew I would be pushed to reach my full potential.

www.siuecougars.com

Laurie Siebert I chose SIUE for both academic and athletic reasons. Academically, it offers a convenient-sized campus which offers quality educational opportunities. Athletically, SIUE has a competitive and determined softball program which is equivalent to that of my own goals.

Esker Enters GLVC Hall of Fame Story Courtesy of Great Lakes Valley Conference INDIANAPOLIS - The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has selected four individuals for induction into the GLVC Hall of Fame. The 2010 GLVC Hall of Fame Class will be honored at the Enterprise Rent-A-Car GLVC Spring Awards Banquet in St. Louis on May 25. Entering the GLVC Hall of Fame in 2010 is Lewis University’s Larry Tucker, Northern Kentucky University’s Dr. Tom Kearns and Betsy Moore and SIU Edwardsville’s Jenny Esker. The impressive class features a softball All-American, an influential and dedicated faculty athletic representative, a three-time soccer AllAmerican and one of the league’s top basketball players. Jenny Esker is a 2004 graduate of former GLVC member SIUE and is one of the most decorated softball players in league history. The 2004 GLVC Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award recipient helped SIUE to the NCAA Tournament in all four seasons and was a threetime All-GLVC selection, a three-time All-Region selection and was named a Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-American three times. Esker was named the GLVC Player of the Year in 2002 after guiding the Cougars to the school’s first GLVC Softball Championship. The three-time GLVC Softball ScholarAthlete of the Year led the GLVC in six offensive categories and broke the SIUE single-season record for hits (83) and runs scored (56) in 2002. As a junior outfielder, Esker was named a First team All-American and the Verizon Academic All-American of the Year. She guided the Cougars to their second straight GLVC softball title and led the league in seven offensive categories including batting average (.439), runs (48) and RBIs (48). Esker helped lead the Cougars to an overall record of 171-59 (.743) in her four years and to a 66-15 (.815) conference record with the program. She graduated as the school’s career record holder in batting average (.395) and runs scored (166) and is in the top five in seven SIUE career offensive categories. Ohio Valley Conference

Brad Walker Associate Commissioner for Operations/COO

Beth DeBauche Commissioner

Entering its 62nd year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. For only the second time in a decade, the Conference expanded by adding Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the league’s 11th member in 2008. The move expanded the OVC’s geographical footprint to the St. Louis market and marked the first change in membership since expanding to the state of Alabama (Jacksonville State, Samford) in 2003. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time commissioner in league history on July 28. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved on to jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the MidAmerican Conferences. The OVC’s proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State; Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky; and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II but

reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948, at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first nontraditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead which signed a second black athlete. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans. The playing field is not the only place where OVC athletes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, the league annually presents one institutional Academic Achievement Award, as well as separate team awards in each Conferencesponsored sport. Since the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Academic All-America program began, the Ohio Valley Conference has had 179 student-athletes

honored with the award, including 25 over the last three years (2006-07 to the present). In 1995, the OVC implemented a first-of-itskind “Sportsmanship Statement,” a policy which promotes principles of fair play, ethical conduct and respect for one’s opponent. The statement has become a model for others to follow across the nation and has answered the challenge of the NCAA Presidents Commission to improve sportsmanship in collegiate athletics. The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Now in its seventh decade of competition, the OVC has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.

National Champions SIUE Softball Wins First National Title in 2007 It was the longest game of the 2007 softball season, and its ending resulted in a national championship for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Coach Sandy Montgomery had advanced teams to the NCAA Tournament for eight consecutive seasons, including a run to the final eight in 2006. The 2007 team, however, battled through 16 consecutive victories to win the national title. Along the way, the 49-8 Cougars captured their second straight Great Lakes Valley Conference and Great Lakes Regional crowns. The national title game itself was the longest in history, a 12-inning, 3 1/2-hour marathon. Ashley Price drove home the winning run in the top of the 12th inning, and Kaitlin Colosimo pitched the final outs. The season as a whole was one to remember. SIUE debuted at No. 5 in the national poll and began the first tournament of the season 3-2 in a chilly Carrollton, Ga. SIUE lost more than a dozen games and three tournaments to weather-related issues. Whole weekends were lost to weather. SIUE began a 10-game winning streak at the beginning of the season in Carrollton, Ga., against West Georgia. The Cougars went 16-3 to start the season before the first pitch was thrown in GLVC play. The Cougars finished 19-5 in the GLVC, gaining the No. 1 seed for the league’s postseason tournament. SIUE had closed out the regular season with doubleheader sweeps against Indianapolis and Saint Joseph’s, which turned out to be the beginning of a key winning streak. At no point in the season did the Cougars lose more than two games in a

40

row. From an offense that batted .300 as a team and a pitching staff that allowed a 1.53 earned run average, SIUE seemed to have all of the tools to make another run at the national tournament. The pitching staff of Kaitlin Colosimo, Sabra McCune and Lindsey Laas teamed up for 408 strikeouts and just 74 walks. Colosimo posted 29 victories and would be named the team’s only All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Her no-hitter against Missouri-St. Louis would only be the beginning of what would come later. It would be two more no-hitters that would propel SIUE in the postseason. The left-hander fired one in the NCAA regional against Wayne State and another en route to the national title game against 2006 national champion Lock Haven. McCune, who had a school-record 33 wins and was named All-American in 2006, posted a 19-5 record her senior season and finished No. 2 all-time in career strikeouts. SIUE’s offense was equally as important to the success of the team. Leadoff hitter Jodie Ohlau led the team in home runs with 11, runs batted in with 39, runs scored with 54, and stolen bases with 35. The Cougars posted a 10-1 record when Ohlau, a left fielder, hit a home run. Catcher Libby Lenart joined Colosimo and Ohlau as All-Region picks. She hit .339 with two home runs and 31 runs batted in during her senior season. She committed one error in 50 games and allowed just 14

stolen bases for the season. Shortstop Kaeleigh Rousey was the top hitter for the season with a .340 batting average. Rousey joined Ohlau as the only players to have started all 57 games. Price, who delivered the game-winning hit in the national championship game, batted .328 and was second on the team with six home runs. The rightfielder also was second with 33 RBIs. She also drew a team-leading 33 walks. Nicole Beecher stepped in at second base and batted .276 in 51 games. Beecher finished third in home runs with five. Lauren Zembruski, a freshman, got her career started off right. She started 54 games at third base and was one of seven players to steal 10 or more bases. Center fielder Courtney Mall, who provided a key two-out hit in the 12th inning of the national title game, stole 19 bases and completed the season with a .267 batting average. Mallory Ruggles and Emily Lenart shared time at first base and designated player. The duo batted .276 and .295 in 2007, respectively. SIUE’s offense outscored its opponents 300-99 over the season. And it wasn’t without depth that the Cougars were able to put all of the pieces together. Chaleen Rumpf played in 37 games and finished with a team-leading .444 batting average. Katy Biggs stole 13 bases and moved into the top 10 on the career list. Coach Montgomery’s deep bench was always ready in a moment’s notice. Her list included Amanda Pucel, Carly Wildenradt, Abbie Bates, and Haylee Eubanks, who scored the game-tying run in the national title game.
