Welcome to Woodstock Park from The Club Secretary

Welcome to Woodstock Park for our last home match of the season. Our visitors are Three Bridges. Welcome to their players, officials and supporters. We hope they enjoy their afternoon here but not too much! We played at three Bridges in November and drew 0-0, a familiar score line for us recently. Also welcome to the match officials and and our mascot today Max Craig, and his family. Another milestone could be met today by Hicham Akhazzan as if he starts today it will be his 300th start for the club. So a big thank you Hich for being such a loyal member of the team. It’s only one defeat in eight matches for Sittingbourne going into this game. The match at Chipstead turned on its head when Chipstead had a mad period of ill discipline in the second half when they were 1-0 up. A bad tackle on Stefan Wright started a melee on the touch line that resulted in Stefan being sent off (harshly), I assume for retaliation and Chipstead having two players sent off. From that moment on Sittingbourne took an iron grip on the game and wave after wave of attacks bore down on the Chipstead goal and it was only a matter of time before The Brickies equalised which they duly did through Adam Williams and then the winner came three minutes later through a well deserved goal for Harry Smith. Harry continued his good form at South Park on Tuesday night in our 3-1 win. He scored one and made another for Adam Williams. This was a really entertaining and impressive performance by Sittingbourne. Yet again we had a number of supporters at an away game giving our team great support.

So we almost come to the end of another season. A couple of years ago with Bourne Park costing us a great deal of money to be there it seemed like we would not be able to continue playing. We made the bold decision to move to Woodstock Park after being invited by Maurice Dunk. Here we are at the end of our second season here and the club is in great shape. We are not in a position to pay huge amounts of money to players and that was not helped this season by us not earning any money from any cup competition. Great credit must go to Nick Davis who took over after Matt Wyatt left. Immediately there was a better atmosphere about the club on and off the field. Nick has done the job with absolutely no pay or expenses thus allowing us to spend more on the team. Next season will be even tighter financially speaking because we have to break even and unfortunately our gates this season have been nowhere near high enough for us to do this. Sponsorship has been good though - much of this is due to the efforts of John Cooper who really has done a great job. If you have not joined our lottery PLEASE CONSIDER IT. It makes a great deal of difference to what we are able to offer players. A form is enclosed in this programme and can be left at the bar or sent to Woodstock at a later date. Please look out for requests for assistance at the ground during the closed season. A number of projects will require help. Finally thank you to all of our supporters who although down on numbers have given the team magnificent support both home and away. Enjoy the summer!

Three Bridges A BRIEF HISTORY Founded in 1901, Three Bridges joined the Mid Sussex Football League in 1902 and were Champions of that League for the first time in the 1907/08 season.

prestigious trophy in 2007/08.

In 1962/63 they won the Division Two Invitation Cup and in 1968/69, 1973/74 and 1979/80 were Second Division Runners Up. 1970/71 produced an against the odds triumph when winning the League’s Invitation Cup against Southwick (3-2).

It looked like being another tough League campaign when they lost four of the first nine matches, but then lost only one of the remaining 29 games, which was concluded by beating Championship rivals Rye United 1-0 at home on the final day of the season!

The 80’s heralded a run of successes, starting with reaching the last sixteen of the F.A.Vase for the first time in 1981/82 before losing at Molesey (1-2). A season later they made it to the last 32 but also won the Sussex RUR Charity Cup for the first time, beating Hastings Town 3-2.

This tremendous run meant the club had achieved its ambition and become Sussex County F.L. Champions. With a superb run in the F.A.Vase too, losing in the last 32 on a penalty shoot out with Derbyshire side Gresley F.C,the 2011/12 ‘Double’ season had undoubtedly been the best in Three Bridges’ history.

Nick’s Notes I write these notes for the final time this season and for what has been a decent run of form over the past dozen or so games. It was always going to take time to mould a team to how I wanted them to play and to bring in the specific personnel to do just that. I do feel now that we have put together (along with my management team) a squad capable to compete with the majority of the teams in our league both at Home and Away. I have said recently what potential we have within the squad and this has been evident in recent performances. We have had 5 teenagers in our 16 man squad with an average age of 22. This same group of players have now only lost 2 in 12, have stayed unbeaten in 6 at home and are starting to become a very hard side to beat. With our recent run of good form we would ideally like the season to run into next year. However the break gives both Tony and I the opportunity to regroup during the off season, add one or two more who we think will improve us and hopefully agree in keeping the majority of this side together. We have two games remaining, our last home game of the season at home to Three Bridges and I hope you really get behind the lads as you have all season for the final time at Woodstock. I finish with a few thankyou’s. Firstly Warren and Harry who have been brilliant once again for Sittingbourne fc. Barry for his continued support throughout along with my assistant Tony who has been a huge help and influence since he joined the club. Finally a massive thankyou to you the supporters who have been out of this world at home and have taken great numbers and vocal support wherever we have travelled this season. If we don’t see you at Merstsham away next week or the presentation evening on the 9th May, have a fantastic summer and see you preseason.

From the Programme editor Hello everybody and welcome to this the final programme of the season. It’s therefore time to thank those who have helped me with the programme throughout this season. I’ll start by thanking Tony Rickson for his excellent match reports and Ken Medwyn fo his fantastic photographs. Thanks also to Maurice Dunk for arranging the printing of the programmes (and his company Slaugher and May). Other thanks go to the other key contributors, John Pitts the club secretary and team manager Nick Davis for their notes, and also to the Non League Paper for their contributions. Thanks also to the advertisers without whose income we would struggle on the finance side even more than we do now, so thanks also to John Cooper for bringing much of this income in for us. The final thanks though go to you the buyers of the programme! If you would like to contribute an article /s to next seasons’ programmes then please let me know! Since I produced the last programme we have had our “international” at Guernsey and many of you would have seen the very nice gesture by the Islanders in presenting my brother John and I a cake for our birthday which was on the day of the match. It’s been another topsy turvey season and I’ve tried to sum it up elsewhere in this programme with a brief review of the season so far, so have a read of that. The promotion and relegation struggles are almost resolved. Congratulations to Burgess Hill Town for a truly epic performance this year and earning promotion. The relegation struggle in the Ryman Premier is especially interesting for us because where are we next season will largely depend on which clubs get relegated. On the day of writing these notes it looks as though Witham, AFC Hornchurch and Bury Town are favourites for the drop, good news for us as they are 3 teams who will logically go down to the Ryman north. That could even mean that we get back Chatham, and also VCD Athletic could join our league. It always a nervy time in close season for us whilst the placing of the clubs in the respective leagues is finalised as we are often the next closest club to the Dartford crossing and thus candidates for the North Division. It also seems now that 4 clubs at our level are folding so the chances are that only the bottom two clubs in our league will get relegated. Don’t forget our greyhound evening at Central Park on Thursday 30th April when we have a dog running in our name. Tickets priced £8 each now available from Ken Medwyn. Also keep an eye on the web site throughout the close season to see what fund raising events we are running and also when help is need at the ground!! Finally it just leaves me to thank you for your wonderful support throughout the season and to wish you all a great and relaxing close season. Peter

Match Reports by Tony Rickson Saturday 4th April 2015 Ryman League Div 1 South Guernsey 3 Sittingbourne 0 Att 817

It’s such a tough time for any away team visiting Guernsey. It involves a 15-hour round trip, getting up really early, quite a bit of hanging around, and then eating probably the wrong food and at the wrong times. And when you get there, although the home club are friendly and welcoming, it’s still an inhospitable atmosphere, with on this occasion probably just the odd 17 in an often noisy crowd of 817 supporting the away team. All praise to the adventurous Sittingbourne fans who made the flight to follow their team, and hopefully the reward was the experience of watching their favourites play ‘international’ football. And a memorable day, or weekend, out. The only Sittingbourne player who couldn’t make the trip was Connor Leon, with manager Nick Davis making just one change from the team that started against Worthing the previous week, Alastair Gordon replacing Harry Smith. Guernsey started at a pace, keeping possession and making pretty shapes as they forced six corners in the opening quarterof-an-hour. (The corner count for the first half was 10-0 in their favour!). Goalkeeper Adam Molloy made one good save in this early flurry, tipping the ball over the bar, but it was Sittingbourne who created a great chance in the 19th minute, Hicham Akhazzan beating the keeper only to see defender Cochrane get back to clear off the line. (See Ken Medwyn’s picture). And as Guernsey immediately broke down the other end they took the lead when Allen’s close-range shot was deflected into his own goal at the near post by George Crimmen. Sittingbourne were by no means out of it, with Adam Williams having one shot well saved and then hitting another attempt wide after the home keeper fumbled Peter Smith’s long free-kick. But mainly it was Guernsey going forward, weaving clever patterns in a midfield area they dominated, having sacrificed a de-

fender in a 3-5-2 set-up to pack that part of the pitch. Crimmen almost conceded a second own goal when he sliced the ball against the bar and fellow central defender Jono Richardson also put the ball only just over the same bar. Stubbornly as Sittingbourne defended, Molloy was the main man, making a handful of good saves, diving to his left and right, to keep his team just the one goal adrift. Sittingbourne worked hard to make a more even game of it in the second half and at just a goal down – and an unlucky one at that - they were always in with a chance of snatching a draw. And it looked as if they might have got it in the 79th minute when sub Dave Pilcher couldn’t quite get a header on target when found in good space at the far post (Again see Ken Medwyn’s accompanying picture!). Sittingbourne could have settled for going down gracefully to a 1-0 defeat, but they went for it, playing three up front against Guernsey’s three-man defence. But that led to gaps elsewhere, and with Sittingbourne tiring after their long day of travelling and chasing the ball in midfield, Guernsey took full advantage. They added two more with excellent strikes, from Rihoy on one side of the area and De La Mere on the other side, both with well-placed shots into the far corner, though at other times Sittingbourne would have hoped to close down the shooters a fraction of a second quicker. It’s a long way home after a disappointing defeat, but the Sittingbourne players remained a credit to the club and – who knows – they might go back next season and get one over Guernsey for a change. Sittingbourne: Molloy, Brunt, Lee, Richardson, Crimmen, P Smith, Wright, Gordon (H Smith 77 mins) Williams (Campbell 62 mins), Cornwell, Akhazzan (Pilcher 70 mins)

A Look back at Season 2014-2015 The season started back on August 9th with a comfortable victory away to CorinthianCasuals with Matt Wyatt in charge. Wyatt and Six of that starting line up are no longer with the club. That game was followed by the first home game, against newly relegated Carshalton Athletic that ended goal-less. A victory over Horsham in the next game put the Brickies to the heady heights of 2nd in the table albeit later games showed that none of the three sides played so far would be promotion contenders. The next game was against Hythe Town, the first of the seasons Kent derbies, and the Brickies came away with a good 2-1 victory. Then came two games against what it transpired were against two of the teams who were to reach the play offs, and those games both ended in the first defeats of the season. Then came the FA Cup preliminary round against Dorking Wanderers, a game on paper at the time that the Brickies should have won comfortably and if they had then the promise of some easier looking games in the future rounds..but it was not to be as the Brickies succumbed to a home defeat in a game where they never got going. When I wrote this review (Early April) Dorking Wanderers were top of their league (Sussex county football league division 1) and if they stay there will be candidates for our level, so perhaps that defeat wasn’t as bad as it seemed at the time. Unfortunately though that defeat and the subsequent exit from the Trophy at the first try (away at Horsham on the 19th October) put us on the back foot as far as finances are concerned that has stayed with us right throughout this season. The lads recovered and there were 2 good wins and a draw (draw at home to Herne Bay and 2 good away wins at Walton Casuals and Ramsgate). A loss at home to Hastings Utd (who were a much stronger side then than they are now) was followed by the highest win for us, 4-0 away to east Grinstead Town, thanks to 2 goals from Step[hen Okoh (where is he now??,) and a goal apiece from Tom Brunt and Elie Kayembe. A narrow 1-0 defeat at Worthing was followed by what was probably the most satisfying result of the season, a 3-0 win at home to Whitstable, a side managed by Jim and Danny Ward and featuring a number of our ex players. October began with a 1-0 victory at Walton & Hersham that saw them 4th in the table but level 2nd on points. Another first round exit in a cup competition, this time the league cup at home to Faversham Town, turned out to be the final game in charge for Matt Wyatt and Barry Crimmen and Warren Chambers took temporary charge. 5 defeats on the trot then followed, 1 of them against league champions’ Burgess Hill Town by a single goal to nil. Strangely, looking at the Hillians record this now looks to be an excellent performance! Two home games at the beginning of November saw the Brickies bag 4 points, a 1-1 draw to Chipstead, and an impressive 5-3 result over Redhill, and Nick Davis’s first game in charge ended in a point after a 0-0 result at Three Bridges. The Brickies scorers at Redhill included 3 defenders and it was defenders at that stage of the season who were top of our scoring charts! The next game saw the Brickies crash out at the first hurdle yet again in a cup competition, this time at home to Tonbridge Angels by 3-2. On the whole though November, December and January saw just 3 wins, (1 in each month) although one of the wins was against Whyteleafe away, an excellent performance. Not so excellent though was the 5-0 reverse at home to Merstham in early December. February began with a 2-1 win at home to Walton & Hersham giving a double over the Surrey club, however the only other game for us in February was disappointing heavy defeat at Whitstable by 4-1 March saw 5 games played by us, and we went unbeaten throughout that month with 4 draws and a win over East Grinstead town for our second double of the season. The points gained in March eased any fears we may have had over relegation. Continued on page 24

Harry Smith has just scored the winner against Chipstead!

A Look back at Season 2014-2015 (So far!) Cont from page 16 April began with our annual international fixture! in Guernsey, a thoroughly enjoyable trip except for the result, a 3-0 reverse against a very good island side. Then came another excellent performance by the Brickies against a Faversham Town team who are in the play offs and desperate for points in order to gain home advantage in them. The score in that game was 0-0, the 3rd 0-0 score for us in the last 4 games. Then came Chipstead, a team who had lost their last 8 games and failed to score in their last 6, and with us having failed to find the net in the last 4 games it was odds on for a dull 0-0 draw, but it was far from that with a bust up in the 69th minute which saw two red cards issued to Chipstead players and a red for Stefan Wright. This was most undeserved for Stefan as from what I saw (and I was very, very close to the event,) he was a totally innocent party. Chipstead had a further player red carded and the Brickies at last found the net twice (Adam Williams and Harry Smith) to make it just 2 defeats in the last ten games. This game was followed by an away rearranged match at South Park and in one of the best displays of the season we came away with a 3-1 victory. We finish with our last home game today, and then the final game of the season away to Merstham
