Dear friends on the journey: On Sunday, June 8, the whole Church celebrates the feast of Pentecost! We rejoice in God’s gift of the Spirit and feel grateful for your partnership which strengthens us to continue sharing the mission of Jesus, encouraged by the fire of the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit inspires our sisters working with young women at Notre Dame Academy (NDA) and Notre Dame Junior Academy (NDJA) and guides our sisters in a variety of parish ministries. Other sisters feel the Spirit’s presence accompanying them as they visit parishioners in their homes or act as spiritual companions to God’s people.

The 110 year sponsorship of Notre Dame Academy remains one of the most viable accomplishments of our sisters since the school was founded in 1904. Sisters and faculty members contributing to the formation of young women know that “one girl can make a difference!”

With nearly 40 Sisters of Notre Dame touching parishioners in so many locations throughout our province, we hope to be ever-more present to God’s people everywhere, sharing God’s goodness!

crossroads Vol. 24, No. 4, Spring 2014 CrossRoads is published quarterly by the Partnership for Mission Office of the Sisters of Notre Dame, Toledo, Ohio. Its purpose is to create a sense of shared mission among members, family and friends.

The title CrossRoads refers to the crossing of paths of our congregation and our friends in the communities where we serve. The “cross” in CrossRoads has special significance in our congregation’s history.

at Notre Dame Academy prepare women of vision

“H

appy to be here” describes Sr. Colleen Marie Cousino’s feelings about being at Notre Dame Academy (NDA) and Notre Dame Junior Academy (NDJA).

I really love teaching in an all-girls’ setting. We’re here to develop leadership for the future and to bring the Gospel message into everyday life.

Sr. Colleen Marie teaches two sections of Chemistry at Notre Dame Academy, two sections of science in 8th Grade and has a home room at Notre Dame Junior Academy.

“When the Junior Academy first opened in 2007 I was happy to join the new faculty.

I’m a Notre Dame Academy graduate and I feel the same NDA spirit now as I did then, but today the faces are different.

She has also assisted faculty members get up to speed in IPad technology since February of 2013 when teachers received their IPads.

“I have researched new apps that are helpful in the classroom so the faculty can use the IPad most effectively.

“The World Wide Web is right here with the students and the IPad provides instantaneous answers for them. It’s a technology that is here to stay,” Sr. Colleen Marie added.

According to NDA’s Dean of Academics, Andrea Zobler Zimmerman (NDA ’96), “When Notre Dame Academy launched its IPad initiative last fall school leaders knew they would have varying levels of ability among the students, and they realized abilities would vary among faculty as well.

“We really wanted the IPad to be used as an educational tool and wanted to instruct our teachers for professional growth. Our faculty is an awesome group of educators. Since Sr. Colleen Cousino is well respected as a sister and a teacher, we felt she was the right person to oversee the professional development for our teachers.”

Andrea added, “Sr. Colleen Marie has gone above and beyond what we envisioned for our faculty training.

She planned group in services, offered sessions before and after school to meet individual needs and offers time

four different periods during the day in the technology room.”

From a student’s point of view Lindsey Bronder, NDA ’16, explained her relationship with Sr. Colleen Marie by saying, “When I transferred to Notre Dame Junior Academy the transition was difficult because I never had to study at my previous school. Sr. Colleen Marie was the first teacher who really challenged me to be the best that I could be. . . to strive for my personal best. While in junior high she taught us how to study and how to deal with stress, which has really helped since I’ve been in high school,” explained Lindsey.

Lindsey had Sr. Colleen Marie for Science and Theology while at NDJA and for 8th Grade Math. “She was a wealth of knowledge about Theology.

She gave me new resources and helped me channel my passion to learn more about my faith. Now many of us who had Sister at NDJA realize it was such a blessing because

we remember so much of what we learned from her. It was especially evident as we (sophomores) took the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT) this year and had to draw on that knowledge.

She really helped me take personal responsibility for my education,” she concluded.

otre Dame Academy is 110 years old this year and continues to build on the solid foundation of the original SND leaders who saw the value of single-sex education back in 1904. “Those early sisters had a vision of what young women would need and we keep adapting as the times change,” said Sr. Mary Ann Culpert, Notre Dame Academy and Junior Academy President.

Sr. Jennifer Marie’s role as a strengthening and conditioning coach for high school girls is a need of today, but not necessarily a need ten or 15

years ago. In addition to conditioning, Sr. Jennifer Marie is co-director of pastoral services at NDA. “Sr. Jennifer Marie has a really good relationship with the girls and has done a lot to move our service programs forward.

She helps the girls see the value and joy in helping others,” Sr. Mary Ann said.

“I love my ministry at NDA! It is an absolute joy and blessing to be able to work with our young “Women of Vision.” I am honored to share in their successes, struggles, challenges and victories! I know they are going to go out and change the world and I’m so lucky to get to be a part of their formative years at NDA!” said Sr. Jennifer Marie.

Sr. Mary Gail Wrasman oversees the study halls at NDA and lends a valuable hand in the finance office too, according to Sr. Mary Ann. “Sr. Mary Gail really joins in the spirit of Notre Dame Academy and takes a special interest in the girls and in their extra curriculars,” Sr. Mary Ann added.

She notices things and I feel she really cares about us.

Sr. Jenny is a modern inspiration for our faith because we can relate to her and she can show us a deeper relationship with God.

Maggie Burlingame (NDA ‘15): “Sr. Jennifer inspired me to become closer to Mary & consider religious life. She’s someone I can relate to – she’s not only a teacher, but she does athletic conditioning, too.

Sr. Jenny is not the typical sister – she doesn’t fit a stereotype.

Dani Johnson (NDA ‘14): Everyone loves Sr. Jenny.

It’s always nice to have her at soccer practice; she always has a smile. Our Kairos retreat was very inspiring because she’s easy to talk with and easy to be with. Sister makes us laugh and she is great in awkward situations too.”

Dave Koenig: (Dad of Claire NDA ’16 and Paige NDA ’13) “Sr. Jenny is always very positive and has a smile on her face. Her personality is uplifting and she never says anything negative.

Our one daughter had knee surgery during soccer season and returned to the team with a lot of frustration. Sr. Jenny told her ‘this may not be the way you thought you’d contribute to your team, but you can still contribute.’ Pointing that out to my daughter really changed her attitude.

Sr. Jenny encourages all of the girls to step-up and be leaders whether it’s through sports or on the Christmas trip to Appalachia. Her faith and attitude are always very apparent.”

Emily Lehmkuhl (NDA ’14): “I love Sr. Jenny – she’s my favorite! She made conditioning for softball and soccer a lot of fun.

She’s also someone I can always go to for advice.”

Sisters in parish ministries: “Sr. Anne Mary is like our point guard. She knows the plays, she knows where everyone is, and she leads them toward mission,” said Fr. Herb Weber, pastor of St. John XXIII, when explaining how Notre Dame Sr. Anne Mary Molyet contributes to St. John XXIII as the pastoral associate.

Sr. Anne Mary says she loves her work at St. John XXIII as pastoral associate for evangelization. “My ministry is very energizing! Our goal is to ask parishioners to use their gifts and talents to build our faith community. We want to empower them to take leadership roles. Being part of the faith life of parishioners gives me a lot of joy!” she said.

Sr. Anne Mary has been at St. John XXIII for four years. She welcomes new members by visiting them in their homes (they have 150-200 new members annually). She provides spiritual direction, bereavement support, visits the sick, directs retreats, and is involved with the parish book club and small faith groups which are active twice a year for six weeks.

“Sr. Anne Mary’s work enriches our parishioners and helps engage them in the mission of the parish. Church is more than the Sunday experience. “Once a person’s faith is awakened, they want to know what to do with it,” Fr. Herb added.

Parishioner Patty Patterson said, “When we came to this parish from Syracuse, NY, we felt like we knew everyone when we walked in the door. It was a wonderful, familiar feeling. Everyone introduces themselves here which has brought things out in us that we haven’t experienced before. Sr. Anne Mary’s role is important because people get to know a sister, and she is very human.”

Patty’s husband Dave Patterson said, “Sr. Anne Mary is just the right person for this place, which is perfect for us. I cannot imagine the parish without her.”

Faith, worship and witness in their faith journey and regardless of where that is, Sr. Marilyn Marie can help a person deepen their relationship with God,” added Marianne.

Most recently she spent a weekend with 58 women in faith formation through the ACTS Retreat. This retreat requires team formation which was about a four month process and culminated with a four day retreat in Adrian, MI. ACTS is a parish-based retreat program that began in 1987 based on Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 2, verses 4247. The acronym ACTS stands for Adoration, Community, Theology and Service, which is the foundation for these retreats intended to inspire parish life.

Pastor Fr. Dave Nuss explained, “God’s faithful crave for the presence of women religious. Sr. Marilyn Marie has been enthusiastically received by our parishioners and school families. We are enormously blessed by her spirit-filled presence and leadership in minstry which brings to us the SND spirit and leadership.

“She is a treasure.” That is how Marianne Hassen, pastoral council president at Toledo’s Little Flower Parish explains Sr. Marilyn Marie Ellerbrock. “Since she arrived at Little Flower last summer she has become a very important member of the Parish Leadership Team. She’s also a welcoming presence at Mass and is often found in the narthex greeting parishioners,” said Marianne.

“Her presence among us marvelously gives cause to pause and ponder how good the good God truly is. She connects us at Little Flower Catholic Parish and Saint Benedict Catholic School with the larger church by means of her international community whose service of God’s People is beautifully seen throughout the entire world.”

Sr. Marilyn Marie Ellerbrock says, “I love my ministry here. It is very life giving.” In the new position of Director of Evangelization and Adult Faith Formation, she works with adults, young adults, and seniors to provide offerings that will allow each group to meet others, participate in bible studies, retreats, and deepen their understanding of the faith.

Partnership for Mission Dear Friends:

“I enjoy taking communion to the elderly parishioners of St. Mary. Some of my regulars expect to see me! I like to stay and visit a while, too, since most of these folks are alone and don’t get out very often. Every so often I’ll also have a service at the nursing home for residents,” explained Sr. Mary Frances Theresa. Sister also visits prisoners at the Putnam County Jail in Ottawa, OH, for three hours every week.

Many of our sisters work in service to diocesan parishes and schools. In this section of CrossRoads, we feature Sr. Mary Frances Theresa Dorsey, who has been in pastoral ministry for ten years at St. Mary Parish, Leipsic, OH. Although she is not financially compensated, she makes a difference in the lives of the elderly in Leipsic. Thank you for your support which provides for her ministry and that of many other Sisters of Notre Dame.

Sr. Mary Christelle Roesner who taught science in the Catholic high schools in northwest Ohio for nearly 30 years died March 11, 2014, at the age of 82.

Sr. Mary Christelle primarily taught chemistry and physics and was known to be gifted in getting her subject matter across.

As a child she attended Gesu School where she was taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame.

She continued her education at Notre Dame Academy and graduated in 1949. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame Community and made first profession of vows in

August of 1952. She received a bachelor’s degree in 1961 from the former Mary Manse College and later received a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame.

Before her teaching years in high schools, she taught at diocesan grade schools, including Immaculate Conception in Bellevue, St. Joseph in Maumee, and Christ the King, St. Mary, and St. Ann in Toledo.

After 42 years Sr. Mary Christelle left classroom teaching in 1993, and tutored high school students in physics and math. As a

volunteer she helped teach poor women who were working on their GED, and tutored children from low-income households who were failing academically in an afterschool program at the Historic Church of St. Patrick in Toledo. Her tutoring ministry lasted for 11 years.

SNDs out and about spreading the word Sisters Mary Alma Rose Langenderfer, Mary Cyrilla Hellman, Mary Michel Schmitt and Rose Maria Moser are just a few SNDs who visit area assisted living and nursing centers each week. Sisters lead a Communion service and pray the Rosary with residents. “I enjoy doing something helpful. These residents need spiritual support just like they need nursing care.

Our presence brings Jesus to them,� explained Sr. Mary Alma Rose Langenderfer.
