What Does it mean to be our “Sista’s Keeper”?

Editor’s Letter

Hey sistas! Welcome to Sista’s Keeper, a magazine just for YOU!!!!! This has been my dream since I was in the 6th grade. I remember reading teen magazines and thinking, “I don’t see myself.” So I began writing & studying magazines so that I could start my own one day...& here it is! As I got older, I realized that we as black women have to build each other up and not break each other down. I chose the name “Sista’s Keeper” because I want to send a message that we are all responsible for each other. When Cain asked the question “Am I my brother’s keeper?” in Genesis 4:9, I believe that he didn’t want that responsibility because he was jealous of his brother. He did not know his own worth & so he took his brother’s life to somehow feel worthy. That’s the purpose of Sista’s Keeper: to build you up as young women so you can be comfortable enough in yourself to help your sisters, cousins, friends, etc. I spent my summer attending events like the YOUth EmpowHERment Summit in July (below) speaking to girls about the magazine & I’m glad to finally get it out there to you. The main topic of this issue is “back to school” so the stories include things that you can take with you; beauty supplies for your locker (online), back to school skincare (pg. 10), taking care of your period at school (pg. 15), & workouts that you can do in class (pg. 16). As we all watched during the 2012 Olympic Games, you can be young and make history just like Gabrielle Douglas and Claressa Shields did. Gabby was the 1st African-American woman to win gold in the all-around comeptition and Claressa was the 1st woman to win gold in the women’s boxing middleweight class (75kg). Even Lia Neal became only the 2nd African American woman on the US Women’s Swimming team (she won bronze). If you want to contact me or have any questions about the magazine, email me at sistaskeepermag@ yahoo.com ot visit our website: www.sistaskeepermagazine.com I hope that you enjoy the magazine & remember: “I AM my Sista’s Keeper” Photo By: Jonathan Strayhorn

Miss Teen USA Logan West

By: LaPorsha Lowry

Logan West’s life changed forever on July 28th when she was crowned Miss Teen USA. The Connecticut contestant jumped for joy after her name was announced as the winner. She had just graduated from Greater Hartford Academy months earlier and was planning to attend Pace University to study dance. Now she has the chance to go to New York Film Academy on a Miss Teen USA scholarship to study acting and dance. On her platform (anti-bullying): “I was bullied for the first time in 7th grade. Girls would curse at, spit at, and hit me because they said that I did not ‘act my race’. I was the victim of this ‘black girl standard’ but the day that I responded, I got suspended. During my suspension, I was inspired to help young people who are bullied and started “BullyProof” when I was 14.” West has spoken to 20,000 students in Connecticut elementary and middle schools to help them with confidence. On being biracial: “I have never identified myself as a certain race. I can’t be anyone else than me; I can only be Logan. I have to be in control of how I see myself so I don’t lose myself.” Best moment of the pageant: “The best part, of course, was when I won & was crowned Miss Teen USA. I was so excited that I jumped up and down and then looked for my mother.” Pageant experience: “I loved every minute of the pageant experience. You would think that there would be a lot of catty drama but it was nothing like that. We had fun and enjoyed the company of the other contestants. We got along great!” Hobbies: “I enjoy baking and dancing. I’ve been dancing for 16 years and want to earn a BFA degree in commercial dance.” Siblings: “I have a younger sister named Sydney (15) who is a high school junior. I am just here to help her along and be there for her. Our parents always helped us with growing up and made us feel confident. They wanted us to appreciate our beauty and our flaws.” How she will balance school and her reign: “Nothing is set in stone yet. It’s about knowing my limits. There will be a media tour and I’m willing to speak to whoever wants me. I’m ready to put in some hard-work between school, my reign, and working with “BullyProof”. It will test my time management skills because I don’t want to miss school or vice versa.” What it means to be my “sista’s keeper”: “To me, it means being a good role model and looking out for each other. We have to be 100% mindful of ourselves, each other and our example.

Beauty

Back-To-School Skincare Tips

By: LaPorsha Lowry

Remember the golden rules... Cleanse, Moisterize, Protect & Exfoliate The old addage, "Beauty is only skin deep", that we have so often heard is a standard that we should adopt. Our inner beauty and how we behave, treat people and respond in our daily lives is what is most important. However, this same addage speaks to what we reflect to the world with our skin. Our skin is the largest organ of the body which helps us regulate our body temperatures, provides the first defense for our bodies from our environment and also performs many other biological functions. As the first defense, our skin is the first thing that we display and reflect to society, therefore highlighting the importance of keeping your skin healthy, clear and glowing.

Dr. Tanya S. McLeod, MD, MPH, MBA Dermatologist Charlotte, NC

Dr. McLeod’s Tips: 1. Know your skin type: oily, dry or combination 2. Based on your skin type choose a cleanser and moisterizer that suits your skin and will not leave you with excessive oils or over dry you 3. Protect your skin daily with sunscreen: excessive exposure to sun causes pre-mature aging and increases your risk of skin cancer

Little Known Fact: Sunscreen helps prevent uneven skin tone & dark spots

4. Exfoliate your skin on a regular basis that is tolerable for your skin type

Rx For Brown Skin Age Block UV Shield SPF 15 $29.95 (1 oz.)

Straight From Dr. McLeod “Not everyone can acheive healthy, clear, glowing skin on their own. Knowing when to consult with the right professional is always key. For further information, please visit me at: www.ppsd.com 10

Many of the New Directions have graduated, but don’t worry; Ryan Murphy told reporters that all the previous series regulars would be returning to Glee as regulars. Glee also returns with several new faces in McKinley High. Jacob Artist plays the half brother of Noah Puckerman. Fashion By: Bianca Sanders

For Your Body Type: Jeans When picking out the perfect pair of jeans, it’s best to know what type of jeans fit your body type and will be most flattering.

High Rise Denim

Bootcut Denim

This style is mainly for the tall & slim. I wouldn't suggest this style for the Petite & Curvy. It can make you look short & frumpy NOT very flattering for the body at all.

Having larger hips & thighs work best to pull these off. Definitely give you a more flattering silhouette.

Low Rise Denim

Straight Leg Denim

This style is more flattering for a smaller frame girl/ woman to make for a great silhouette. Curvier ladies stay away!

Have thicker hips & thighs or even if you don’t this style of denim is a great fit for anyone. Giving the illusion of long legs a great flattering denim style.

Boyfriend Jeans

Skinny Jeans

GREAT for all shapes and sizes. They're so very comfy, always wear them tighter inside of extra loose with simple tops.

I recommend this style more for the tall & petite, with a great pair of heels, flats or tucked into those knee high boots (HOT FALL TREND). It’s flattering on any body shape.

Top 3 Denim Websites

Check out these 3 great websites to find the Best Fit Denim For YOU 1) www.us.levis.com They have a great new tool to help you find your denim, it's called Curve ID the denim ranges from $46 to $78. Dr. Leeya F. Pinder OB/GYN Charlotte, NC

Time of the Month: Dealing With Your Period

Health By: LaPorsha Lowry

Starting your period can be a scary experience, so Dr. Pinder answers questions that were submitted by Ajayda, an 11-year-old 6th grader from Charlotte, NC.

Q: I’m 11 & I just started my period. Is this normal? The start of a young girls menstrual cycle (period) is a very normal part of growing up. It is part of puberty, which is when your body changes to become more like and adult. For most girls their menstrual cycle starts between ages 12-14, but some girls start earlier.

Q: I’m embarrassed and scared for my period to come on at school. What do I do? A menstrual period usually lasts between 3-5 days, but can be as long as 7 days. So unless you are on summer break, you will have a period during school time. You are not alone. In your school there are many girls who are dealing with their periods every day. Most girls handle their cycles without anyone knowing they are having a period. The key to managing your period during school time is preparation. Knowing when your cycle will occur and having the

proper tools for good hygiene, will make this easier for you, so there is no need to be embarrassed or afraid while at school. Q: I don’t want to mess up my pants. How can I keep from doing that? In order to avoid “accidents” or soiling your clothes during your period, it is important to know when your cycle is coming and also which days your flow is the heaviest. For most girls their menstrual flow is heaviest around the second day. On the heaviest days, you may have to change you pads/tampons more frequently – usually every 2 hours. On your heaviest days, if you can’t change as frequently, you may need to get Super pads/tampons to absorb more menstrual blood. A normal menstrual cycle is once a month or it’s starts every 28 days. Get a calendar and every month mark the 1st day of your period. This will help you to know around what day your next period will

Continued on pg. 44

The Student Athlete and Their Monthly Challenger Being a student athlete is an exciting, yet sometimes challenging time in a young persons’ life. It can be pretty hard to balance schoolwork, homework, practices and games with the complicated balancing act that happens just trying to be a normal teen.

One of the biggest challenges for a female athlete is her period, and this occurs every month. The menstrual period becomes a regular part of life for females usually beginning between the ages of 12-14, but sometimes earlier. A menstrual period usually lasts 3-7 days and comes once a month around every 28 days. When you first start your period, this may come sooner or later than every 28 days, but it will become more regular the older that you get. The menstrual blood flow varies for each person and can be light, regular, heavy, or some combination of all three. It can be truly bothersome having your period during the season. It can make you feel self-conscious, uncomfortable, and sometimes unhygienic. Here are some useful tips to help you conquer you menstrual cycle-just like you conquer your sport! 1.

2. 3. 4.

Mark the 1st day of each menstrual period on a calendar so you’ll know when to expect your period. Change your pad or tampon just before practice or competition begins, and shower and change it just after it ends. If you can’t take a shower immediately after, when you change your pad/tampon, consider using cleansing cloths instead (example: Always cleansing wipes). Consider using or learning how to use

tampons, so you won’t have the bulk of a pad and the feeling of wetness as you practice or participate in competition. a) Tampons can seem pretty scary when you’ve never used them before, but they go in easily and you don’t feel them on the inside while your doing your activities. b) Talk to your Mom or your Pediatrician about how to insert/use a tampon correctly in order to avoid unnecessary discomfort or other risks c) Tampons are small and soft and they really allow you freedom from worry especially if you are a swimmer, a volleyball player, or a runner. d) Plastic applicators are more comfortable than cardboard applicators (example: Platex gentle glide) e) Always make sure you are changing your tampons/pads at least every 4-6 hours and it is usually best not to sleep overnight in tampons. There are a variety of absorbencies for pads and tampons, use the type that is appropriate for your daily flow so that you will be comfortable and able to focus on your activity. 5. If you have menstrual cramps, use over the counter medications like Midol, Pamprin, or Motrin to help alleviate the cramping, so you can concentrate and be at your best. 6. Talk to your doctor. The Internet can be a great place to connect with your friends, but it can also be a great place to get the WRONG

information. Have a safe season athletes. Don’t let your menstrual period keep you from being your best. Olympians don’t! Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with any of the products mentioned, nor do I endorse one brand over another.

Use these tips to kick your period’s butt!

Show Him You’re Interested

Relationships

By: Taris Easterling

Sistas, it’s about that time again to start preparing yourself for another year of school. You have everything you could possibly need: books, pencils, book bags...but one thing is missing. And that one thing reminds you that’s it’s missing every time you turn on Pandora and hear your favorite slow songs which immediately puts you in your feelings. Here are some tips for you that will cure the loneliness & help you find a boyfriend.

Follow him on Twitter/ Friend him on Facebook

Sit Next To Him In Class

1

There’s nothing wrong with sitting next to him. Establishing a connection early on will ease you into getting him to open up and talk to you.

4

2

Make sure you keep with his “hilarity” but don’t overdo it by cyber stalking him. That’s just not a good luck.

Be In His Group For a Project Be BOLD! Volunteer to help him and do a group project together. Working with him will guarantee you the time to get closer and “invade” his space.

5

3

Talk to him Communication is the foundation to every relationship. Phone calls, text messages, Skype/OoVoo dates are the key to making it work!

Meet Him in the Lunchroom Sashay your way into his heart the old-fashioned way: FOOD and FRIENDS! Chill with him and his friends at lunch and mingle and blend in. A girl that can hang with home and them his friends is the best girlfriend EVER! Text him “Good morning”

A good morning text or tweet will turn his day into a smile quick. Let him know that he was on your mind in the AM or PM. That’s a surefire way into the top spot.

7 These tips are only foundations and guiding steps to help you win the heart of your beloved. The rest, ladies, is up to you! 18

Do You Know What Love Is?

Relationships

By: Yani Long

You hear about it in songs and movies , but do you REALLY know what it means? It’s more than just a word... Love can be defined in more than one way. It can be shared between a man and a woman, a girl and a boy, sister and brother, other immediate family, and amongst friends. Each individual has an idea of what love entails, but does he or she really know what love is? Love first begins with you. Loving yourself is one of the most important, if not the most important, asset that you can acquire. Before you can love anyone else you have to learn how to love yourself. Loving yourself gives you the opportunity to learn your worth, allow you to think rationally while coming to understand what is best for you. Only you know what is best for you, but in doing so you have to put yourself first. The first step in learning how to love yourself is to look in the mirror, know that you are beautiful because you are a child of God, and first and foremost God loves you. In order to develop your own definition of what love is you have to understand what love is not. The Bible says that love does not boast, it does not envy, and it does not delight in evil but rejoices in truth, love is not easily angered, keeps no record

of wrongs, is not proud, and does not dishonor others. With that being said, love should be understood as more than just a word. Love is not just a word because it is an action. Through life experiences you will soon come to understand that to feel love you have to see love. The saying “actions speak louder than words,” stays true to its meaning. Someone cannot tell you that he or she loves you if he or she does not show you. For example, if someone tells you that he or

she loves you but you never see him or her, wouldn’t you begin to question his or her love? Love without action does not exist. Jesus died for our sins and that is the largest act of love there is.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. -John 3:16 (NIV)

Building Your Relationship with God

When times get tough and the people around you (familly, friends, boyfriend) cannot help or are not there, who do you turn to? Having a relationship with God often makes things better. As a young adult, it is important to build strong healthy relationships with close friends and relatives, teachers, and other individuals that have a positive influence in your life. The importance of building those types of relationships is to earn and gain trust, develop character, to love, care, and support. The key to building strong healthy relationships is first building a relationship with God. The first question that may come to mind is: Who is God? God is the creator of all things. The second question may be why is building a relationship with God a key factor in building relationships with others. The answer has to do with the knowledge of what God has written in the bible. If anyone should believe in anything at all, God is thought to be the best. His word teaches you how to love and guides you on the path that will lead you to growth and righteousness. No one wants to be led astray and mostly everyone wants to do the right thing. The Bible is known to be your guide. Your guide to worshipping him and learning how to live on earth as you would in heaven. Is anyone perfect? No, but the point of it all is to get you to live the life that you deserve. There is so much knowledge to gain by allowing yourself to open your heart to the Lord your Christ. With all the ups and downs and curve balls that life throws at you, God has all the answers and power to turn whatever pain there is into joy. The Bible teaches you how to remain faithful and you begin to 20

learn how to keep a positive mind throughout any hardship that you may encounter as you develop into the strong, confident, intelligent woman that you are destined to be. If you choose God to be the power you believe in, the progression that takes place within you furthers your thought process. For example, instead of committing a kind act for self gratification, you would be glad and grateful that you were even given the opportunity to help someone in need. While being there for someone in need you allow others to trust you and in turn it builds your character. God said love your neighbor as yourself, which is found in the book of Mark in the 12th chapter verse thirty-one. This is just one example

of the other commandments that God asks you to do. The scripture also defines what love is which gives you a great bit of knowledge about what type of relationship may be the right one for you. You are allowed to pick and choose your battles, and of those battles are choosing the right relationships for you. In choosing the right relationships you learn how to maintain those relationships. Strong, healthy relationships create for abundant benefits and first building a relationship with God shows you how far you can go mentally and spiritually. If you’re not sure who to go to or where to start, just pray. God will answer and show you what you need to do.

Baby Steps

Baby steps are small steps towards a goal. You want to accomplish something but it can’t happen overnight...you have to WORK for it! Think of these tips as “baby steps” to go along with the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens feature. Go to pg. 34 and read it first, then come back to this page. Use this worksheet in your daily life.

Paradigms & Principles •

Look in the mirror & say something POSITIVE about yourself

Think of a limiting paradigm that you have of yourself; do something that contradicts it

When you have nothing to do, what is it that occupies your thoughts, time & energy?

Habit 1: Be Proactive •

Listen to the words that you use today. Count how many times you use reactive words (“I have to…”, “You make me…”, “I can’t…”, “Why can’t they…”)

Reactive language I use most: __________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Use the GOLDEN RULE: Treat others the way that you want them to treat YOU

Listen carefully to the music that you listen to the most; Evaluate if it goes along with the principles that you believe in

Keep promises to yourself: Take one task (laundry, homework, etc.) & give yourself a time to do it, then get it done

Personal Bank Account •

Do random acts of service: Write a thank-you note, take out the trash, do the dishes, etc.

Tap into your talents: list a talent that you want to develop & write down steps to get there

Talent I want to develop: __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ Steps to get there: __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ •

Be gentle with yourself: Try to go a whole day WITHOUT negative self talk; replace negative thought about yourself with positive ones

Renew yourself: Complete a FUN activity that will lift your spirits (music, dancing, etc.)

Be honest: For one day, try not to exaggerate or embellish

Paradigm- the way you see something, your point of view, frame of reference, or belief Reactive- acting in response to a situation rather than creating or controlling it

Do something today that you always wanted to do but didn’t; get out of your comfort zone & go for it (ask someone out, raise your hand in class, try out for a team)

Write yourself a Post-It note: “I will not let _______________________ __________________________________________________________ decide how I’m going to feel.” Put it on your mirror, in your locker, in your planner & refer to it often •

When you go to a party, don’t just sit against the wall. Find someone to talk to, dance, or walk up & introduce yourself to someone new

If you get into a fight with a parent or friend, be the first to apologize

Identify something in your life that you have no control over that you always worry about & decide how to drop it

Things that I always worry about but have NO control over: __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ •

Stop yourself before you react to someone who bumps you in the hallway, calls you a name or cuts in line

Ask yourself, “What is my most unhealthy habit?” Do something about it

Most unhealthy habit: __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ What I’m going to do about it: __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________

D E L O N G GIR L

By: LaPorsha Lowry

When Gabrielle Douglas flipped, flew and vaulted her way to become the first African-American woman to win the Olympic gymnastics all-around, she inspired an entire generation of young black girls.

G

abrielle Douglas was not favored to win gold at the London Olympics. In fact, she wasn’t even supposed to be the best one on her team. However, when this 4-foot-11-inch black girl looked up and saw her name as first in the Women’s Gymnastics allaround, she instantly became the one on top, fulfilling her dream since she was younger. Gabrielle Douglas leaped her way to a Olympic gold medal...and right into our hearts.

That dream was to compete in the Olympics, and she would work hard and make great sacrifices to achieve it. Facing adversity at every turn, she can now tell the story of how it all paid off, and how she became America’s sweetheart.

Leap of Faith

C

ould you imagine leaving your family, moving away from home with complete strangers just to complete your dreams? That’s exactly what Gabrielle Douglas did when she moved from Virgina to Iowa to train with Olympic gymnastics coach Liang Chow. “I made a lot of sacrifices: moving to Iowa, not being with my dad whenever I want to or hang out with my friends but in the end, it would all pay off. I had a BIG dream,” she told Fox Sports’ Dominque

Dawes earlier this year, who was her inspiration to get into gymanstics. That dream would take her from her home in Virgina, to Iowa, and eventually to London, where she would be able to silence critics and qualify for the individual all-around final. She was an underdog, who many thought would not even make the finals, because only two people from each team make it. Many had predicted that teammates Jordan Weiber and Aly Raisman would make

“I want to inspire

young girls & let them know everything is possible if you put your mind to it.”

it instead. But it was Gabrielle who would advance and take the gold.

Making History

W

hen I first heard about Gabrielle Douglas, I had a great feeling about her: not only to cover her for this magazine but I felt that she would be a great ambassador for gymnastics. However, at the time I had no idea the impact that she would make by winning the gold medal. At the very moment that she secured her place in history as the first African-American woman to win the Women’s Olympic gold, she lit up the faces of every young black girl in America, and probably the world. Back when she spoke to Dominique Dawes, she said that she really hoped to make history.

“This isn’t a black sport. I want everyone to say ‘Wow, she’s African-American. They can’t do that!’ I want to say, ‘Yes we can!’” And that’s exactly what she did: broke down barriers that were in her sport for decades. She not only won the gold medal, but she inspired an entire generation of young girls, who are probably only a few years younger than her. Douglas is only 16, but she is looking forward to the 2016 Olympics to defend her title, as well as completing high school and going to college. She wants all of her fans to take what she has done and be inspired. “ I want to inspire young girls & let them know everything is possible if you put your mind to it,” she says. “If Gabby can do it, I can do it!”

Douglas has been everywhere since her historc win: (top left) interview with Oprah, meeting her inspiration Dominique Dawes, & talking with First Lady Michelle Obama (bottom)

Be Effective!!!!! Habit 1: Be Proactive

This first habit is the key to unlocking all the other habits in later issues. Taking initiative & making moves is the first step toward achieving a victory! Proactive vs. Reactive: the choice is yours

Situation: You find out that another girl is spreading a nasty rumor about you

Becoming a Change Agent WHO ARE YOUR ROLE MODELS? • Be the FIRST to do something • Don’t let your past or family history discourage you

We Can Control Only One Thing • How we respond to what happens

Reactive: make choices based on impulse • You are like a bottle of soda (if life shakes you up, the pressure builds & you suddenly EXPLODE!!!!! “I’m gonna beat you down! You don’t know who you’re messing with!” Proactive: make choices based on values • Think before you act; you can’t control everything but you control what you do about it “I know the truth & I’m not going to let this bother me.”

“I am the force. I am the captain of my life. I can choose my attitude. I’m responsible for my own happiness or unhappiness. I am in the driver’s seat of my destiny, not just a passenger.”

Turning Setbacks Into Triumphs

• A setback is an opportunity to turn it into triumph

Proactive= puts control back into your hands

“I’ll try” vs “I’ll do it”

26

Sista’s Keeper

• Get control & think about how you want to respond 4 Human Tools: 1. Self-awareness 2. Conscience 3. Imagination 4. Willpower

Rising Above Abuse • If you’ve been abused, it’s not your fault...don’t keep it a secret! Tell someone to help you make it better so the healing & forgiving process

Victimitus

Listen to Your Language

Reactive= takes power away from you & gives it to something or someone else

Just Push Pause

• Believe that everyone is out to get you or owes you something Reactive=easily offended, blame others, get angry & say things that you’ll regret, whine & complain, wait for things to happen, change only when you have to

Proactive= not easily offended, take responsibility, think before you act, bounce back from something bad, find a way to make it happen, change what you can & don’t worry about what you can’t

September 2012

Paradigms & Principles A paradigm is the way you see something, your point, frame of reference, or belief. If you believe you’re dumb, that will make you dumb! You will look for evidence to support your belief & when you find it, you will keep believing it. If you believe you’re smart, that will help you to feel better Paradigm of self

Is your view of yourself helping or hindering you? Paradigm shift-seeing things in a new way Negative=limitations Positive=bring out the best

How can I fix it? Spend time with someone who believes in you and builds you up (family, friends, coach, teacher). It only takes one person & don’t be afraid to lean on them. Go to them for advice and see yourself the way they see you Paradigm of others Seeing things from a different point of view helps to understand why people act the way they do. We too often judge people without having all the facts. Seeing things from another point of view can make a difference in our attitude towards others. Paradigms are often incomplete, inaccurate, or completely messed up; shouldn’t be quick to judge, label, or form

opinions of others or ourselves; we rarely have all the facts or see the whole picture Open your mind to new information, ideas, and points of view & be willing to change them when they’re wrong Most problems (friends, relationships, attitude, self-esteem) are the result of messed up paradigms Paradigm of life • What is the driving force of my life? •

What do I spend my time thinking about?

• What or who is my obsession? Whatever is most important to you will become your paradigm

Be PRINCIPLE-driven

Examples of Principles

1. Friends-don’t base your identity on having friends, being accepted, and being popular; don’t compromise your standard or change them to accommodate 2. Stuff-Nothing wrong with having things, but don’t center your life on things that have no lasting value; confidence should come from within 3. Relationship- The more you center your life on someone, the more attractive you become to that person; it’s irritating when someone builds their entire emotional life around you; you will be a better girlfriend if you’re not centered on your partner 4. School-Education is vital & should be a priority; but don’t let GPA & AP classes take over your life; purpose of school is to learn 5. Parent-greatest source of love & guidance (respect & honor them) but you should not live just to please them 6. Sports/hobbies- don’t make your identity center around playing a sport or hobbies like dance, drama, music, or clubs; be well-rounded 7. Hero- don’t worship someone (famous or not) or revolve your life around them or what they do (wear what they wear, etc.) 8. Enemy- don’t build your life around hating a person, group or idea (being a mean girl or hating a clique) 9. Work-don’t be driven by the want for more stuff (money, clothes, shoes, etc.) 10. Self-don’t think the world revolves around you & your problems

• • •

Most stable foundation that you can build on Putting principles first builds character Decide which principles you can use in a situation

“What is the principle that I can use here?”

Personal Bank Account

Inside Out- if you want to make a change in your life, start with yourself PBA Deposits-keep promises to yourself, do small acts of kindness, Be gentle with yourself, be honest, renew yourself, tap into your talents PBA Withdrawls- Break personal promises, keep to yourself, beat yourself up, be dishonest, wear yourself out, neglect your talents Keep promises to yourself- commit to yourself; focus on the things you can control Do small acts of kindness-speak to a lonely person; write a thank-you note to someone who makes a difference in your life

Be gentle with yourself-you don’t have to be perfect; don’t pressure yourself; be patient & give yourself time to grow; forgive yourself when you mess up; learn from mistakes Be honest-self-honesty; honesty in our actions Renew yourself-take time for yourself; find a place to escape to; music, dancing, exercising Tap into your talents-find & develop a talent; it’s exciting; selfexpression builds self-esteem

Ask your Mom to buy you a cute/ stylish make-up bag or pouch to keep your pads/ tampons, that way others don’t know that it’s that time of the month for you. Most tampons are now so compact, that they fit in your pocket! Also, you can get some personal hygiene cloths to wipe off every time you change your pad/ tampon. This reduces the risk of any odor associated with your period. The biggest way to reduce the risk of an odor from your period is to change your pads/ tampon as often as you can - especially on your heaviest days. Can’t talk to her friends or trust others Starting your period is a frightening thing, but everyone has had some fear associated with it. If you can’t talk to your friends about what you’re going through, your Mom is a great resource. She probably went through all the same things you’re going through right now! Also, older sisters, Aunts, and Grandmothers can be of help as well. If there are no family members you feel comfortable with, there is always the school nurse or your Pediatrician. They will have great useful information for you as well.

By eighth grade, only half as many girls as boys are interested in math, science, and engineering careers. If each of us gives a girl our time and support today, she can find the courage, confidence, and character she’ll need to build a better tomorrow.
