Editor’s Letter

’ey sistas! I’m sorry that this issue is so

late to be published. Things have been really busy for me lately but I’m happy to say that this is another great issue of Sista’s Keeper. This month, we tackle a very important topic: COLLEGE! It is a very proud and fulfilling moment when you are accepted into college. I remember receiving my acceptance letter from North Carolina A&T State University and being overjoyed that my hard work had paid off. Little did I know that the work was only getting started. Rachel Crow (pg. 30) started from humble beginnings in Mead, Colorado to make it all the way to the finals of The X-Factor. Now she is starring in the new movie Rio 2 as Carla, Blu and Jewel’s music-loving, older daughter. Girl Talk Foundation’s Prom Project (pg. 36) gives girls the opportunity to make their prom dreams come true by picking a dress, shoes and accessories to have. American Red Cross Month (pg. 34) is the time of year when the organization raises awareness for people in need and provides services and supplies in case of emergency. Check out this feature to get more information on volunteering. The topic of this month’s sections is Spring Break so we have several stories to give you an idea of what to do. There is also a feature on “alternative spring break”, which means volunteering during your week off from school. Also, check out feature on Jordan Williams (pg. 45) who was crowned Miss West Charlotte (HS) in Charlotte, NC a few months ago. Congratulations Jordan!

As always, if you want to contact me of have any questions about the magazine, email me at: laporsha@sistaskeepermagazine.com or visit our website: www.sistaskeepermagazine.com Remember the purpose of Sista’s Keeper: to build you up as young women so you can be comfortable enough in yourself to help your sisters, cousins, friends, etc. I hope that you enjoy this issue and remember:

Spring Makeup Trends By: Mariyah Moseley For a woman, but more especially an AfricanAmerican woman, finding the right make-up that will emphasize your natural beauty and best facial features is vital, while also keeping it fresh and modern. Now that spring 2014 has arrived, there are several trends that have arrived including exotic and fun lip colors, expressive eyes, and a gold/nude eye shadow. Bright colors like hot pink, baby blue, and rose red, are new trends in lipstick, and can accent

several great outfits, such as a floral crop top with high-waisted shorts. Rihanna’s Mac lipstick collection includes a range of classically gorgeous shades, such as orange frost, creamy nude and the vivid red of RiRi Woo, which are all perfect for adding that extra pop. For the eyes, a really popular trend is the expressive eyes look. While many say the eyes can tell you everything you need to know about a person, properly adding that extra layer of color or liner around the eyes will not only make your eyes look bigger, but can add versatility to your overall look. The final make-up trend of spring 2014 includes a gold or nude eye shadow. By adding this neutral color above the eyelid, it really adds a natural glistening look to the face. LaLa’s Motives make-up collection includes a Shimmery Copper shadow that will fulfill this sparky and dazzling look. March 2014

Beauty

Bye Ashy!!!!! As the winter comes to an end, you may notice that the cold weather has taken a toll on your skin. Dry, chapped skin is not only uncomfortable but it can also ruin a great spring ensemble. Here are a few tips to rejuvenate skin and keep it moisturized and soft all year long.

Start In The Shower A nice steamy shower perfectly sets the tone for deep moisture . Take maximum advantage of all that H2O by investing in a bath bar or body wash that contains extra moisturizers, such as shea butter or olive oil. Using these in the shower helps your skin to hold in moisture when it’s at its most absorbent. Many of them have the added advantage of fragrance that can make you feel even more soft and feminine.

Drink Plenty Of Water When we think about skin care, we tend to think from the outside in. However, making sure your body has plenty of water can help you hydrate your skin from the inside out. Though there is no immediate effect on the skin, drinking plenty of water is a good habit to maintain long-term skin health.

Exfoliate Exfoliation helps to remove any dead skin cells that are hanging on. Wiping away those old cells exposes your new, fresh skin and makes it easier to moisturize deeply and effectively. A quick way to do this is to use bath gloves. You can add a little shower gel or soap to the glove and use it all over for a complete exfoliation. Be careful not to scrub too hard or too long as the abrasive material can cause small scrapes in your skin.

Lock In The Moisture

Immediately after showering towel dry, leaving your skin slightly damp. Apply lotion all over, including your feet and hands. A general rule to remember is the thicker the lotion, the better. If you already have a favorite lotion, you can try mixing it with petroleum jelly to create a thicker version that will reach deeper and last longer.

Hydrate On The Go

14

Sista’s Keeper

March 2014

While a good lotion session does the body good, it may not be enough to last throughout the day. It’s a good idea to keep a travel size lotion with you just in case that ash decides to pop up while you’re out and about. Also, lotioning your hands after washing them or being out in the cold will help keep them soft and avoid that flaking and cracking that most of us deal with from time to time. Remember, a little preparation now can save you a lot of discomfort (and embarrassment) in the future.

Awards Season Recap: Where were we?

Entertainment

Lupita Nyong’o won big but there were no other actresses of color being honored or even nominated this year. One of the biggest winners during this awards season was breakout star Lupita Nyong’o for her role as Patsy in 12 Years A Slave. She won most of the major awards, including: • Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress • Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role • Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress With all of Nyong’o’s success, there was still a lack of African-American actresses being recognized by the awards community. Oprah Winfrey’s rare acting role in The Butler

was critically-acclaimed but received no major nominations. Most of the black female lead roles that were seen last year were on TV and had a questionable trend of “other women” and mistresses of married men. While these women were powerful and sucessful, they were still on the outside looking in on healthy and committed relationships. Maybe the acting world will recognize more black actresses next year and maybe the roles will be there but maybe some of you will dream to tell the stories of black women in films. Take the quote from Nyong’o’s Oscar acceptance speech:

“No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”

Every color that she’s worn on the red carpet goes seemlessly with her chocolate skin tone. Here are the three best looks that Lupita has worn this year: #3- This red Ralph Lauren dress was a stunner on the red carpet at the 2014 Golden Globes. #2- For the 2014 Hollywood Film Awards, she brought the red carpet to a standstill in this yellow gown. #1- We LOVE this light blue dress that she wore to the SAG Awards. Period Supplies

Getting your period is a part of life and becoming a young woman. Here are a few tips to choose the right supplies for you. There comes a time in every woman’s life when she has to ask herself that age-old question: pads or tampons?? Though the consequences of choosing one over the other may not seem life-threatening, there are some things that every girl should know before making her choice. Sista’s Keeper has put together a comparison with both the pros and cons of each period supply. Hopefully after reading you will have more knowledge, believe fewer myths, and be able to make a choice that is both convenient and comfortable for you. Pads are pretty much what they sound like- a pad of absorbent material that you place inside your underwear to catch menstrual blood. They come with a sticky underside to help them stay in place as you move through your day and many come with wingslittle flaps that wrap around your underwear to prevent side spilling.

22

Sista’s Keeper

March 2014

Pads come in many different sizes such as “ultra thin”, “super long”, or “overnight” depending on what kind of protection you need. The great thing about pads is you do not have to worry about insertion or being uncomfortable internally. They also come in wrappers that can be used for easy disposal when you change, which should be roughly every 4 hours unless you’re experiencing a particularly heavy flow. While pads are a great option for your period, there are a few things you should be careful about. First, be careful when picking your pads to note whether they are scented or not. If they are, they may cause irritation, allergic reactions, or even yeast infections if severe enough. Also, while there are thin, small versions available, many women feel that pads can be rather bulky. (Remember that while you may feel the pad, if worn properly people around you cannot tell so there’s no need to be self-conscious.)

If pads don’t quite suit you, tampons may be a better option. They are inserted into the vagina using an applicator-a plastic or cardboard tube. Unlike pads, a tampon absorbs the blood before it exits the body. When inserted there is a string left hanging from the vagina that you will use to remove it once it is time to change. One of the most common questions girls have is “can I use tampons if I’m a virgin?” or “if I use tampons will I still be a virgin?” The answer is yes, absolutely! Using tampons does not affect your sexual status in any way. Women who use tampons PROPERLY (according to the instructions) tend to have a comfortable experience with them. They minimize the feeling of the flow and maximize the comfort in your underwear. But there are some risks. One potentially fatal risk is a disease called Toxic Shock Syndrome. While getting TSS from tampons is very rare you should always be sure to change tampons every 4-6 hours and seek medical attention if you experience :

• • • • •

Vomiting or diarrhea Fever over 102° F A sunburn-like rash Dizziness or confusion Clammy or pale skin

Health

A more likely but far less dangerous risk is forgetting you have one in! It may sound crazy but it’s possible if you don’t pay attention. Before inserting a new tampon, always feel for a string just to be sure you have removed the last one. Also, when your period has ended, double check to make sure you have removed your last tampon of the month. Now that you know the good, the bad, and the ugly of pads and tampons, the choice is up to you. Each woman has her own preference and some even like both. No matter which you choose be responsible, be safe, and be comfy!

American Red Cross Month: Giving Blood In addition to kicking off the beautiful season of Spring, March is also American Red Cross month. If you’re not familiar with the American Red Cross or its purpose, it is an organization whose mission is to “prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors”. As a part of its ongoing effort to prepare for and act in emergencies , the Red Cross collects blood from roughly 3.3 million volunteer donors each year. Though this may seem like plenty they are in constant need of more generous people to come through their doors to donate. As a volunteer with the Red Cross you have the power to help preserve life in times of great misfortune and disaster. Even if you are not yet 18, you can help! Read on for more details on how you can make a difference in lives across the country or even across town. •

REGISTER: To sign up to give blood you must register with the Red Cross. During registration you must present a photo ID, a parental consent form (if you’re under 18), a list of any medications you are on, and a list of any places outside of the US and Canada that you have traveled within the last 12 months. Also feel free to read up on the process and come with any questions you may have for the technician. PREPARE: The night before your donation be sure to get plenty of rest. Throughout the day you should be sure to eat healthy meals full of protein and iron. Also be sure to drink plenty of fluids and water throughout the day, especially having water 10-30 minutes before your donation. This will help to avoid dizziness or lightheadedness after your donation.

CHECK YOUR HEALTH: In order to give healthy blood you have to be healthy! If you are sick, you should reschedule your appointment. If you are feeling well, the physicians at the Red Cross will give you a mini examination and ask you confidential health questions in order to ensure that your blood can be used for transfusion.

DONATE: Once you have made all the preparations all you have to do is sit and donate! A technician will clean your arm and insert a needle to draw your blood. During this time you can socialize with other donors or just take the time to relax your mind.

REFRESH: After donation, it is important to take a moment to refresh yourself. Enjoy the drinks and snacks available to you after you in the waiting area and take time to be sure you don’t have any adverse reaction such as dizziness or fainting. Allow yourself 15-20 minutes of recuperation before walking or driving away from the facility.

REPEAT: Once you’re all done make plans for your next donation! Or better yet, host a drive at your school or church to help the Red Cross build their blood supply.

Relationships

What Does “Dating” Look around...we are bombarded with romantic comedies. People are getting married all the time, and we are always curious about who our favorite celebs are dating. Let’s face it. Many of us want love. Many of us have no idea how to find it…

Sometimes we look for the most handsome or pretty person, or the one with plenty of money, or the one who is educated, well known and influential. Some of us only care about someone bringing out those “tingles and giggles” in us. Some of us understand that the most important element of ANY great healthy relationship, begins with a healthy relationship with ourselves, and a strong friendship with the other person… So, what is “dating?” Dating usually refers to the process of two people getting to know each other, beyond the constraints of friendship.

24

Sista’s Keeper

March 2014

So what’s the difference between just getting to know someone as a friend, and actual “dating”? Well…most folks who are dating someone, are usually open to the possibility of a committed romantic relationship…being someone’s girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, or wife…Boo status. Some folks “date” casually, which usually involves them just spending some one-on-one time with whomever they choose, not really focusing on any type of commitment. Okay. Firstly, the thing that many of us forget

Mean Anyways?

is that relationships teach us things about ourselves that we simply cannot learn on our own. For example, if someone is raised as an only child and rarely has to share their stuff, they may have no idea that they are stingy or selfish until they are put in a situation where they have to share something important, like their space, maybe with a college roommate. So the folks we meet that make our spines tingle and our hearts flutter are here to teach us something and help us grow in some way too. Just like friendships, dating takes time. It’s a process. Take your time. Take your time because the person who makes your eyes twinkle today, may be a great friend for the future, but sometimes we are so eager because of the excitement of new feelings for someone that we sabotage a great friendship. Time shows us what we need to see from people. Seriously, we attract what we are, so we really don’t have to LOOK for anything. It comes to us, just like our best friends. We don’t LOOK for our best friends.

Relationships

Those relationships develop naturally, and sometimes weirdly. We may often ask ourselves, “How did we get so close?” This doesn’t mean that we are just a stump sitting and waiting for goodness to come our way. This means that if we just focus on being the best version of ourselves, one day at a time, and we focus on living our best life now, and we learn to love ourselves, then we don’t ever have to “date.” We can allow friendships to develop naturally, and true love, will inevitably emerge, reflecting back what WE are… So, are you a respectful, kind, considerate, compassionate, responsible, person? No? Maybe that’s why you have attracted, uh, HIM. HE is showing you something about yourself… So, be easy! Decide what type of person you want to be with. Decide what type of person you want to be. BE that! Work on being your best, and see every person that crosses your path as a teacher. Love will find you.

Define healthy relationships in your OWN terms!!!!! For more information, visit: http://www.loveisrespect.org/ Live chat: 1-866-331-9474 or text “loveis” to 22522 March 2014

Spring Break: Things To Do

Spring break is a time for you and your friends to have the time of your life. Make it fun and try not to worry about what’s due two days after you get back to school. You only get a few spring breaks so make them count!

RELAX! School is a major stressor for so many teens and that can have some really bad effects on your mind and your body. So fill up that bath tub with bubbles and set some nice-smelling candles all over your bathroom and just relax! You could even go to the spa or get your nails done instead!

TRY SOMETHING NEW Spending all of your time in school doesn’t leave much time to try new things! Spring break is a great time to learn how to cook (something other than cereal), or learn how to paint the perfect flower. Whatever your preference is, there is always something new to learn!

ROAD TRIP Although you and your friends might not be able to drive yet, you can still head out on a road trip over your spring break! You could have one of your parents drive you, or an older brother or sister, and you could all head to the beach, the mountains, or even something else. Pick your favorite place and go have fun!

GO TO A CONCERT Have you been waiting to see your favorite singer in concert? Go see him or her during your break! You may not be able to get a front row seat, but there will be plenty left for you and your friends to sit together and jam out to your favorite tunes!

MOVIE MARATHON Movie marathons with a bunch of your closest friends are so much fun! You can have everyone bring their favorite movie and, since you won’t have school the next morning, stay up all night watching them! Make sure you make loads of popcorn and bring extra snacks just in case. Remember, tired teens are hungry teens! 26

Taking an “Alternative” Break Every year during the school year you get a break from the headaches of exams, tests, homework, your peers and the list goes on. Of course there is the summer break, fall, winter and at last spring break. Spring break is that time that most students from all over participate in. Summer is the big break before the new school year. Fall and winter break consists of family time and the holidays, but spring break, is the break full of fun, adventure, and a lot of things you probably should not do. Why not do something different this year or next year if you already have plans? Every year it’s trips to the beach, tanning in the sun, Cancun or some awesome big city that you’ve never been before. While that may sound exciting, and it is, what are you doing to give back to the community? Take a few days, clear your mind from all the work that you have to get back to when school is back in session, and locate your nearest community outreach program. Volunteer a day or two at the homeless shelter. There are a number of things to do to give back while you have the time to spare.

Jando By: Yani Long

Think about it. It builds character, it’s a learning experience, and it gives you the opportunity to change and touch other’s lives. Some examples of some organizations local and national are United Way, Projects Abroad, and Habitat for Humanity. You can sign up and register through your local branch if there is one in your area or go online and sign up to the location nearest you and find the best alternative spring break for you. It shouldn’t take away from any amount of fun that you may want to have. A lot of these organizations visit and travel overseas. It’s quite the experience. While registration maybe closed at this time for the national organizations, it’s something to keep in mind for next year when planning what to do for your next spring break. In the meantime, while there is still time, there are still minor give backs you can get into in your community, neighborhood, and city. Technology can be a gift and a curse, use it to your advantage and research community service in your area. Get your gal pals, commit to a project, and change a life or two.

Spring Break College Road Trip

Ndege

Visiting college campuses is an important part of deciding what school you want to attend and spring break is the perfect time to take a road trip to some of your potential choices. A college visit allows you the opportunity to see first-hand if it is the right place for you.

1) Try to plan as early as possible by doing things like calling the campus to see if they have official tours planned near the dates of your spring break. You can also call to see if you can sit in on a class in the major you want to get a better perspective on the classes you will be taking. It's important to call ahead since not all campuses allow outside students to attend a class without notice.

2) Get more than one perspective by exploring the campus on your own in addition to the official tour. Ask questions about different aspects of the college from students you see. You can also check out fliers on bulletin boards in the student union to see if the extracurricular activities will be a good fit for you. 3) You should try to talk to a professor in the major you want. Talk to the professor about classes that are required in the major and other things they have noted as a professor. Do they have good relationships with their students? 4) Take notes and pictures since the visits to different campuses can overlap and blur. The notes and pictures can come in handy for a later time after you have visited all your potential colleges and want to compare to see which is best for you. 5) Consider an overnight visit. Some colleges allow perspective students to stay in the dorms and this can help you get a feel for the campus at night. Are the students spending their time studying or partying? Spending the night could have an impact on your final decision. March 2014

The

X Factor

Overnight sensation Rachel Crow entered the reality-TV singing competition to display her talent, not knowing that it would lead to her being a finalist and signing a recording contract.

X-Factor At age thirteen, Crow packed her bags and set off to Los Angeles with her family. She wowed Hollywood, and the rest of America, the minute she opened her mouth at an audition for The X-Factor. Her powerful voice echoed the soul of a past generation, and her spunky, sweet and sassy personality endeared even the most jaded heart. As a contestant on the first season of The X Factor, this five-foot wonder was hands-down an unequivocal choice of all four judges. The response from viewers was equally irrepressible. Each week, she brought the audience to their feet with stunning renditions of songs like "If I Were a Boy" by Beyoncé and "Mercy" by Duffy. Jaws dropped for miles when she belted Etta James's "I'd Rather Go Blind" and turned the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way" into a lovely ballad. Crow was a top finalist in the competition and soon signed a record deal with Columbia Records/Syco.

Mean Girls

Crow stepped into the studio in the spring of 2012 to record her first EP. The self-titled debut showcases new music like the powerful "What a Song Can Do." "Mean Girls," the first single, co-written and produced by Toby Gad (Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Fergie), speaks to all those kids who have been bullied. She reminds the bullies with a resilient voice that this girl won't be broken. "Gonna just comb you out of my curls," she sings on this bittersweet anthem. Crow pulls from some tough experiences of her own for "Mean Girls." "School was hard for me," she says, "because I lived in a small farm town and I was so out of the box that I didn't feel like the other kids really understood me... I really want to not only inspire kids who have been bullied, but I also hope to inspire the kids that do the bullying to stop that behavior."

Music is Part of Her

Raised on a farm surrounded by country music, Crow began singing as a toddler. 32

She later went on to enter talent contests at local fairs and decided by the age of five that she would be a performer. Some musical influences peek out in her style. "I really love Etta James," Crow says, "she is a rare talent, and I love, love, love Bruno Mars." Speaking about her other favorites, Beyoncé and Adele, she declares, "they are amazing...I want to be able to surprise people like that."

Foster The People

The Crow family is a tight unit with strong values that were evidently passed on to their children. "My parents," Crow says, "have taught me to stay true to myself and to accept everyone for who they are. They work hard to keep me humble and grounded. I love my parents and my little sister, Hannah, more than anything in the world." Having been adopted at a young age by her parents, Barbara and Kelly Crow, her experiences and good fortune have inspired her to want to help others. "I want to start a foundation for foster kids," says Crow. "I want them to have somewhere they can go for support. They should know that what they want to do with their life is important and to have someone there who believes in them."

Act Like A “Starr”

Crow has also begun acting on Nickelodeon's comedy series, FRED: THE SHOW. She plays the recurring role of Starr, an eccentric student whose confidence slightly clouds her selfperception. This foray precedes her overall talent deal with the network, and she is thrilled about the upcoming project. "I grew up watching Nick, and I'm a huge fan," says Crow. "I really want it to be something that boys and girls like. I want them to dance and sing and have a ball." As her new career is blossoming, this young talent is proving that an ambitious goal is not impossible. Girls and boys alike can be inspired by the results of her drive and hard work. Dreams are now Rachel Crow's reality.

American Red President Barack Obama has proclaimed March as Red Cross Month across the United States, a tradition begun by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943. “During American Red Cross Month, we honor those who devote themselves to bringing relief where there is suffering, inspiring hope where there is despair, and healing the wounds of disaster and war,” the proclamation reads. “Today, American Red Cross workers, alongside countless humanitarian organizations and caring volunteers, deliver life-saving assistance in every corner of our Nation and all across the globe.” The Red Cross has a long-standing relationship with the White House dating back to 1913 and President Woodrow Wilson. In 1906, a largely ceremonial office of president was added to the Red Cross leadership. In 1913, President Wilson agreed to serve in this role. This began a tradition that continues today whereby the president of the United States serves as honorary chairman of the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters big and small in this country every year. It provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families – in war zones, military hospitals and on military installations around the

world; collects and distributes about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply and trains millions of people in first aid, water safety and other life-saving skills. During Red Cross Month, the American Red Cross is recognizing the country’s everyday heroes – heroes who reach out to help people in need. These are the people who: • Help disaster victims get on the road to recovery • Give blood to help a hospital patient • Brighten the day of an injured service member who is in a hospital far from home • Take one of our lifesaving classes and step forward to assist someone having a heart attack or to save a drowning child Red Cross Month is a great time to become part of the Red Cross. And it’s easy to do. You can gather members of your household and work on a preparedness plan so you are ready for emergencies. You can become a Red Cross volunteer. Or you can give blood or a financial donation.

Mission Statement:The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is always there in times of need.

Choosing

By: Mariyah Moseley

The process of selecting where you want to further your education after high school can be can be quite overwhelming and stressful. In the back of your mind is the reminder that this is the place that you will be spending the next four years of your life at, and the fear that you will select an institution that you won’t like. Five key factors that can have a tremendous impact on your decision include: location, educational programs, cost, student population, and if you are a spiritual person, the local churches. During the selection process, if you make a list of your desires in each of the categories listed above, and compare this list to each college/university you are considering, you will ultimately find a place that best fits your needs. First on the list of selecting a college is important factor, which is location. You should decide whether you want to attend a school in a rural, suburban, or urban area. Rural and suburban areas are typically a small or medium sized town that is serene; urban areas on the other hand are busy cities that include several entertainment options, and are very culturally diverse. If you want a city that isn’t boring, but is also calm enough for you to concentrate, writing down specifics on your list such as variety of restaurants, public transportation in the city, etc., can also help gear you towards your dream school.

Educational programs are an essential piece to finding the right school for you, because you want to find an institution that not only offers a major that you are interested in, but will provide you with the necessary skillset to obtain success in your career field. The cost of a college/university is crucial, because you don’t want to attend a school that is completely out of your financial realm, and will put pile you to your head with debt. One of the most important factors towards many students happiness while in college is pertaining to this next factor, which is student population. Determining whether you would like to be around thousands of people, and meet a new person daily, or be a part of a student population that is almost like your family with only a few hundred students, is crucial. The final element to finding the best college for you is to find the local churches in the vicinity. If you are a spiritual person and attending a Baptist, non-denominational, Methodist church, etc. is something that important to you, then researching and viewing online services for churches in the area would be very beneficial. In addition to that, pray and ask GOD to help guide you on the path to this next phase in your life, and having faith in his predestined plan.

A College Things to consider:

Accepted: If you’ve received acceptance offers from more than one college, congratulations! Your hard work has paid off, and now you get to choose which college is best for you. Don’t worry about choosing that one perfect college — there’s no such thing. The bottom line is that college is what you make of it: What you do while you’re there matters more than the college name on your diploma. Here’s how to make your decision. You don’t have to decide overnight, but don’t miss the reply deadline.

Get More Information

• How many students return after freshman year? How many graduate? • Does the college offer a lot of majors I’m interested in? • What can I do for fun? • What kinds of students feel at home at this college?

Get Answers The best place to get an answer depends on the question. Here are some of the resources that can provide information:

You already have a lot of information about each college, but digging a little deeper can help you make the best choice for you. Ask questions. Create a list of any questions you still have about • Current students at the college the colleges you’re considering. You may want to • The college’s official website and its College get answers to questions like these: Search profile

Accceptance Spotlight Courtney Warren, 18 Senior, GlenOak High School Canton, Ohio Accepted to: • University of Dayton (full academic scholarship) • Fisk University • Ohio University • Bowling Green University • Hampton University “I am very excited about college! Ever since I was little watching A Different World, I’ve wanted to go to an HBCU! Getting the acceptance letters is basically a symbol of all that I’ve been working for in high school.”

March 2014

Now What????? As you search for answers, it’s important to use only trustworthy sources of information and to recognize the difference between fact and opinion. A college’s official website and its admission officers are often the best sources of factual information about that college.

Visit (or revisit) The Campus If possible, check out a college's campus to get more information. If you can’t visit a campus, call or email the admission office with your questions. Ask if someone there can put you in touch with current students and recent graduates. Your high school counselor and teachers also may know students who graduated from your high school and now attend the college.

Think Things Over You've done research and asked questions. Now it's time to check your own thoughts and feelings. Ask yourself questions like these: • How did I feel when I was on campus at each college I visited? • Which colleges best match my list of musthaves? • At which colleges can I imagine myself as successful and happy?

Compare The Colleges

Use your new information to sort the colleges by what they offer and what you want. Make a list of the pros and cons for each college. You can also use College Search to compare up to three colleges side by side.

Compare Financial Aid Awards This is an important step for many students. The Compare Your Aid Awards tool lets you compare up to four offers side by side. Talk to your family about which colleges work best financially. You should make decisions about financial aid, such as whether you should take a student loan or work-study job, together.

Make Your Decision You don’t have to decide overnight. Many colleges don’t expect your final decision until May 1, so you have some time to make up your mind. But remember that colleges are serious about reply deadlines. If you don’t send your deposit in time, you risk losing your place.

Respond to the Colleges Once you’ve decided which college you want to attend, inform all the colleges that accepted you about your decision. Respond to the college you’ve decided to attend. Make sure to send in the following items by the deadline: • Your acceptance letter • A deposit • A separate acceptance letter for financial aid, if required • Any other required items Respond to the colleges whose offers you're declining. Send a brief note to the other colleges to thank them and turn down their offers. This frees up places for other students.
