he Naa Gaa Jee workshop held November 17 in Sioux Lookout spotlighted safety measures for young Aboriginal students, many of whom are away from home and living in Sioux Lookout for the first time. “The northern communities, parents, grandparents… they’ve always been concerned and worried, whether their children go to Winnipeg or Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sioux Lookout,” said Angela Kakekagumick, aboriginal sexual assault worker with the Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA). “There’s always a concern there.” The ONWA Ending Violence Against Aboriginal Women

Initiative started organizing and planning the workshop with local service providers as a way to address concerns about the safety of Aboriginal high school and post-secondary students who are attending school outside of their home communities. ONWA partnered with Keewaytinook Okimakanak Secondary Student Services, Northern Nishnawbe Education Council, Equaywuk, the Keewatin Patricia District School Board, Shibogama First Nations Council, and the NishnawbeGamik Friendship Centre to put on the workshop. How to buy a barbeque When I went to the hardware store last week I had no intention of buying another barbeque. Honestly, I went there only to get a couple mouse traps. Unfortunately the store was out of mouse traps, but to get to the mousetrap aisle I had to pass the big, beautiful barbeque that I had swooned over last May. I hate leaving a store empty handed and, before I could go out the door with nothing, a brilliant BRILLIANT - idea filled my head. Snow next week. This baby’s been sitting here unsold all summer. I should check with the manager. Maybe, just maybe, it’ll be going on sale soon. Well, what a coincidence! She was going to put a sale sign on it that very morning.

Who hustled quicker is hard to say, but I had my truck backed up to the door seconds before two guys had the grill there and loaded up. That very same day I got my new shiny transferred to the boat and out to camp where it’s a great addition to the deck. Here’s my first projecta loaf of whole wheat bread baked in the barbeque. It’s good that Mary doesn’t use Facebook or read my silly little anecdotes, so she doesn’t know this story. (For some reason she thinks I already have too many barbeques.) As I was baking at camp on my brand new grill she commented, “Oh, I see you brought the barbeque from home,” and I pretended my hearing aids were off so as not to engage in a lie.

Luckily, she loved the bread. Ate two slices... hot... with butter. We are getting snow this weekend, so by the time we get home Tuesday, the

other new barbeque on the home deck will be covered and by spring when it gloriously reappears she’ll kinda forget. And, if she doesn’t, I’ll remind her

how wonderful that first loaf of bread tasted, and turn my hearing aids off for a couple hours as I knead a fresh batch of dough.

Wow! Bravo! Although I am not normally a letter writer, I now find it necessary to tell my story. I have been a permanent resident of Sioux Lookout for almost 40 years. I have been very fortunate over the past years, not requiring very much medical help. However approximately 10 years ago I started having issues with my back and sciatic leg pain. After waiting a couple of years I sought help from my doctor. After the necessary tests and scans, it was determined that I had three damaged discs in my back and had mild Spinal Stenosis. Over the years the Stenosis became severe and by July 2014 I was in constant pain and was

unable to sleep at night. Because my family doctor was no longer seeing patients, I was somewhat at a loss. My wife suggested that I see her doctor who had just transferred to the Clinic. In late August I had my first appointment with Dr. Barbara Russell Mahoney. She immediately put things in motion, prescribed the necessary medication to ease my pain and, in seven weeks to the day, she had all the necessary tests done and I had an appointment with a Neurosurgeon (Dr. I Haq), who admitted me to C3 Neurosurgery at the TBRHSC that same day. After being admitted, I received the best possible nursing care that I could have imagined. From what I saw they treated everyone

in that ward as if they were special. The nurses were literally run off their feet for most of their shifts, rarely getting a break, but that didn’t wipe the smile off their faces. I was listed as (On Call to OR) and remained on standby for an available Operating Room. Saturday at 6 p.m. it was my time to have back surgery. Dr. Haq and his crew performed the operation and had me settled in my room by Midnight. They had me sitting by 6 a.m., breakfast at 7 a.m. and I was in the cafeteria by 10 a.m. drinking a Starbucks coffee with my wife and daughter. I remained up that whole day and was literally amazed that my leg pain was gone for the first time in over 10 years.

The following day I had visitors from my family, Thunder Bay, Terrace Bay, and the nurse who had attended to me, after arriving back to my room from surgery. She was on her day off, but took the time to come and see how I was doing. I was back at home Tuesday and when I awoke Wednesday at 4 a.m. I sat on my deck having a coffee and wondering how is it possible, that someone from a remote community in NWO could receive the quality of health care in such a timely fashion, which I had just experienced. I came to realize that I was reaping the rewards of all the hard work, time and dedication, that some of my friends

and their colleagues devoted to establishing the wonderful medical facilities we now have in NWO. These facilities have undoubtedly helped to attract the high quality medical professionals that we now have available to us. I believe that key word is Care and that possibly the genuine caring has somehow transferred from the boards and foundations that helped establish them, to the facilities themselves. I am somewhat at a loss for words. All I can say is WOW & BRAVO. Special thanks to Dr. Barbara Russell Mahoney, the Clinic, Dr. I Haq, TBRHSC and my pal Harv. Niels Madsen

grandparents, and great grandparents, would get together for Christmas. There were so many presents that the tree was almost covered. We would wait until 12 a.m. on the 25th of December. At 12 someone would pretend to be Santa and take the presents from the pile and call up whoever’s name

was on it, until all the presents were gone. By the time all the gifts were given away it would be almost 2 a.m. Even at this time no one would be heading home. We would sit around and show each other what we got. We would set up some of our toys and play with our cousins. By the time

eveyone was heading home it would be around 3:30. The next morning everyone would be up and cooking Christmas lunch/ diner by 8. At noon my grandfather would say grace, we’d eat, and spend the rest of the day together. It’s different now. Everyone just does their own thing on Christmas.

It makes me feel bad for my younger siblings, and cousins, because they don’t even know what they missed out on. It also makes me feel pretty upset knowing that my family will probably never have Christmases like we did before, but I’m thankful for all the fun Christmases we’ve had.

Through Operation Christmas Child, shoeboxes full of gifts make their way to underprivileged children in over 100 countries around the world. The massive gift-

giving project is run by Samaritan’s Purse. New Life Assembly is the local collection centre, where Smoky Cole has been heading up collections for many years. Over the 16 years Sioux Lookout has been involved with the project, he estimates more than 4500 shoeboxes have shipped from this small town. As shoeboxes packed with toys, school supplies, and toiletries were being packed into

Upgrades slated for Kasabonika any Sioux Lookout OPP officers volunteered

asabonika Lake First Nation will soon be upgrading its diesel generating station. The community announced November 20 that they have awarded the contract for the upgrade to Con-Pro Industries. Construction will start in the spring and will include the addition of a generator room, replacement of the existing fuel tank storage system, and upgrades to numerous auxiliary systems. Con-Pro Industries will use the winter road network to move materials prior to construction. The federal government is investing about $12 million for the generating station. “I appreciate the efforts of the team in getting this project approved, which is urgently required,” said Kasabonika chief Eno Anderson. “This project will lead to a lot of other opportunities in the community and help to solve the housing backlog.” “Our government believes that investing in a reliable electrical generating plant is essential for building strong and self-reliant First Nation communities,” said Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. “I want to congratulate Kasabonika Lake First Nation on reaching this milestone,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario. “This is a clear demonstration of the great work that can be accomplished when governments and First Nations come together to advance shared priorities.” their time on November 22 to help ensure that less fortunate families have a great Christmas. gathering place in many communities. How nice would it be to have a water park here in the summer and a little artificial ice surface in the winter. It was so nice to see so many young families out last night and the kids were so excited to see the Cedar Bay team of horses along with Sandy Lockhart and John Cole.” She continued, “This will not be the last of such events in this

park if our committee decides to do more of this. We need more committees to work with the municipality and get this town alive again. The Chamber of Commerce is a fantastic group of members that works hard, not only in their own businesses, but to try and get people shopping in our community and promoting the businesses we have here.” Pastor Phil Smith of

here in recent months and I explained what we were doing and they were so happy.” Councillor Joyce Timpson remarked, “This is what Sioux Lookout is all about. It’s what makes Sioux Lookout such a wonderful place to live.” Sandra Lockhart of the Friends of Cedar Bay commented, “Nancy approached us. She

Ubay Almassraf said it was wonderful to see so many businesses downtown participate in Moonlight Madness and the way everyone worked together to light up the park and make Moonlight Madness a special evening. Roy went around to local businesses and asked them if they would decorate for Christmas.

She said she was delighted at how many have done so. The chamber’s Light Up Sioux Lookout Committee is holding a store front decorating contest. Judging will take place December 5. The committee wishes to light up even more of the town, so Roy is encouraging people to purchase Centennial

year merchandise from the chamber such as the popular photo books to help fund their work. “This is what makes this town so special, when a group of people care enough about their town, we can be successful at anything we want to try and do to better Sioux Lookout,” Roy concluded.

Life at Pelican

’m going to be honest. Life at Pelican gets pretty boring. Although the staff try to give us activities to do it still gets pretty boring there, doing the same things over, and over again.

I’m sure it would be more interesting if they changed up the activities, and did a bit of both, active, and nonactive activities. Everyone is different. Some people like active activites, some people just like to chill, others like to be artistic,

and others like to do other cool stuff. They should have at least two or three activities, just in case someone doesn’t feel like playing sports. They would have something else to do, instead of sitting around bored. I’m one of the people

who just likes to chill and listen to music. I do like when they have an art room open, because I love to paint and draw. Occasionally, I will volley a volleyball around. Sometimes I wish they would give us T:11.5” exciting to something

do. Like for example, flood the rink so we could skate, or maybe buy or rent a few Skidoos, because who doesn’t like Ski-dooing? Also, I think life at Pelican would be better if we did family type stuff, like decorate our houses for holidays, go

out and cut Christmas trees, bake cookies, buy each other presents, and have a Christmas dinner together. We live there most of our year, so why not make it seem a little like home? That’s just my opinion, anyway. Skye Neekan, over and out.

Young SMPS students learning science skills through Lego play Tim Brody Associate Editor

rimary division students at Sioux Mountain Public School (SMPS) are learning science, technology and engineering skills, while having fun through the JuniorFIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL®). Eleven teams, made up of four or five Grades 1 to 3 children each are taking part in the after school program. Kristin Ward, Special Education Resource Teacher at SMPS, shared, “It’s fantastic. Our primary students are extremely excited about the program, hence the huge number of kids that have decided to sign up.” She commented on getting the program up and running at the school. “We have kids that really love Lego and that kind of came up last year with a

careers in the fields of science, technology and engineering. Our vision is of a world which celebrates success in science, technology and engineering and in which young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.” Scott explained, “The theme they are working to is called Think Tank. It’s all about education. It’s all about how we learn. They can take anything from how you would learn how to read, how you

would learn to fish or tie your shoes. It can be anything you can learn to do and they are going to be looking at the tools they use to learn and they are going to be creating models that reflect that kind of thing.” Information on FIRST Canada’s website states, “Focused on building an interest in science and engineering in children ages 6-9, JuniorFIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL) is a hands-on program designed to capture

young children’s inherent curiosity and direct it toward discovering the possibilities of improving the world around them. Just like FIRST LEGO League (FLL), this program features a realworld challenge, to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. Guided by adult coaches and the Jr. FLL Core Values, students work with LEGO elements and moving parts to build ideas and concepts and present them for review.” Students in the program will design and build challenge solutions using LEGO elements, apply realworld math and science concepts, research challenges facing today’s scientists, learn teambuilding and presentation skills and develop Show-Me posters.

The program will conclude later with students setting up science-fair like presentations to showcase what they learned for their families and peers. “When the children get their Lego to move it’s like when your child learned how to read. They conquer that page and all of a sudden their Lego is moving and it’s a pretty exciting moment for the children,” Scott said. Ward added, “The kids are really excited. They keep asking when their next Lego League day is.” Grade 8 teacher Steven Dumonski is working to bring a variant of the program for older children to his classroom later this school year. “I’m really excited to see what the children are going to come up with,” Scott concluded.

Danʼs work in Victim and Trauma Support and Suicide Prevention saved lives and saved relationships. After 29 years of police service, he retired in 2012 as Deputy Chief of NAPs. He continued his work in Trauma Support and Suicide Prevention after his retirement.

Dan was born in Atikokan on January 22, 1960 but Sioux Lookout was his home. He was the third child and only son of Gordon and Diana MacLeod; and brother to Joan and Sandra. Dan married Diane Kuzemchuk, his high school sweetheart, on July 14, 1979 and they remained inseparable for the next 35 years.

On November 14 the Knuckles doubled up the Slate Falls Airways Otters 6-3. On November 16 the Puckhogs edged the Skycare Turbos 9-8 in overtime. On November 20 the Knuckles clobbered the Puckhogs 14-4. The Steelheads beat the Slate Falls Airways Otters 7-5 on November 23 (pictured).
