major health care announcement from The Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre (SLMHC) last week. The health centre is now offering year round, enhanced mammography services. A health centre press release states, “Our digital mammography unit has given us the opportunity to expand our breast screening and diagnostic mammography services to include mammograms, breast ultrasounds and breast biopsies. All services can be performed on site, in a timely

manner, following provincial quality assurance guidelines and standards.” Previously women were only able to access mammography services 30 days of the year when a special van came to town or they had to travel to Thunder Bay. Jenn Maki, VP, Quality and Support Services for SLMHC explained the mammography equipment at the hospital started being used in 2011. Technicians then had to be trained and the equipment checked over. The mammography unit received accreditation in October of 2013. See Healthy on page 6

Some good information,” he said. Squires said he was impressed that Premier Kathleen Wynne attended the conference and spoke to delegates as did Northern Development Critic Norm Miller on behalf of PC Leader Tim Hudak and KenoraRainy River MPP Sarah Campbell on behalf of NDP leader Andrea Horwath. “The general feel I got from listening to all of them speak is that every party is in election mode. I think that was to be expected. Squares stated, “They weren’t able to speak as freely as they would have liked due to the upcoming budget. They didn’t really want to commit to anything. It made sense but it was also very frustrating. Overall I felt the conference went very, very well.” “There was a young fellow, Stan Wesley, who gave a keynote address, Roads to Resources Through Partnerships. He gave a very powerful presentation of how we need to work together. After his presentation I went up and spoke with him personally and he was very knowledgeable about

our Friendship Accord in Sioux Lookout. He was a very impressive speaker. I think he was probably the most powerful speaker we had there,” Squires commented. “The direction our mayor and council has taken with the Friendship Accord really seemed to strike a note there. I spoke to a number of representatives throughout the conference and they seemed to think we are going in the right direction. Personally I think we are leaps and bounds ahead of a lot of the country.” Squires concluded, “The conference really revolved around people working together and moving forward and that we have to work together… we have so many resources here there’s a lot of hype around the Ring of Fire but there’s many mining opportunities within the northwest.”

Municipality asking public’s help with spring cleaning Geoff Shields Staff Writer

ITCH-IN CANADA originated in 1967 when a group of concerned citizens from Victoria, British Columbia decided to hold a week-long event. There were growing concerns

by the residents over the increasing sight of litter and marine debris in the area; so they gathered together to clean up the shoreline and tidal area. The event was a great success and resulted in the formation of the Outdoors Unlittered

Club from which PitchIn evolved to become an annual clean-up event across Canada. The Municipality of Sioux Lookout commenced involvement in the program in 1999. This year, the former week-long event, which

ollow i ng a packed house council meeting where many residents voiced concern over plans for a local green space, a follow-up meeting was recently held where developers could present their plans and members of council and the public could ask questions. The green space at the intersection of Fuller Street and Second Avenue, which formerly played host to the community’s outdoor rink and a playground, was declared surplus by the municipality in January. Municipal ads advising of official plan and zoning bylaw amendments to change the zoning of the property and requesting proposals from developers had many attending the March 19 town council meeting feeling there might be a problem with the municipal process. It was stated at the meeting that was not the case, however members of council and staff conceded it could be perceived that way by the public. Concerns over a lack

of green space in the area, drainage, a possible gravel pit and car dump being buried under the site and possibly having something built that might not fit the character of the neighbourhood all came up. A decision was made to hold a follow up meeting on April 17. John Carnochan of White Pine General Contracting presented he and partner Kevin Labelle’s proposal for the area as did Mitch Wills of M&R Construction. Both said they were looking at building living accommodations geared towards senior living. Carnochan and Labelle’s proposal consisted of one four to five unit attached building to run along Fuller Street and one four to five unit attached building to run along Second Avenue. The Wills brother’s proposal consisted of four single detached homes running along Fuller Street and a four unit building in behind the community garden off Second Avenue. Members of the

public again expressed concern over how either proposal might affect drainage in the area and were informed the projects might actually help with that. Members of the public expressed a concern that if either proposal went forward, no public green space would remain. Other members of the public said they would have liked to have heard more substantial information come out of the meeting. Both Wills and Carnochan explained they hadn’t had time to put anything really complicated together as they had only had a short window of opportunity to make a proposal adding it didn’t make sense to spend money on more complex plans unless either one of them was granted the property. Council did not make a decision on the property at the meeting. Sioux Lookout Mayor Dennis Leney said he expects the matter to come forward at the May regular meeting of council.

Home is where the heart is, for sure I drive a pickup truck. The side mirrors stick out a fair distance from the truck body. I take some pride, when going approaching the pickup window of a drive-through, in sliding gracefully and smoothly with my mirror an inch or so from the building, to minimize the distance the bag of burgers has to be handed through. The side mirrors on Mary’s car hardly extend out at all. I never thought of that until I drove up and stopped at the customs booth at the border coming back into Canada. I smiled proudly through my

open window, passport in hand, at the officer and yodelled out a happy “Good morning.” Officer, frowning, bluntly, “Why did you pull up so close to the building?” Me, air out of my balloon, puzzled, “So you wouldn’t have to stretch to reach our passports.” Officer, gruffly, “How am I supposed to get out of here?” Me, leaning slightly forward, peering out the side window, attempting my best Stan Laurel face while biting my cheek to keep from laughing as I saw the three inches of air between us, “I can pull forward a bit and

manoeuver around a bit.” Officer, still gruff, not needing to bite the inside of his cheeks to maintain a straight face, “You’re almost hitting the building. Just put it in Park.” A few questions and we were on our way. No big problem. As usual, we had a few “Oops. I’m wearing the fox hat” moments (http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=YNHXFviVb8I) but we did eventually end up where we wanted to be, with good friends from Sioux Lookout who moved to British Columbia 11 years ago. Some of you will remember Bill and Robin Dawes. You may notice that Robin is quite an avid bird watcher, so I ended up buying a high quality set of binoculars (holy cow - what a difference from the ones I’ve been using) and we spent a

Handi Transit AGM In 2009 after a couple of years not being used the bus was back on the road. Based on information received from surveys the bus started operation Tuesday and Friday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Diligence in tracking when passengers actually use the bus, listening to community members and making changes, now has the bus operating Monday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday and Friday 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. This almost doubles the original hours of operation. Two-thousand-thirteen was another year of change and challenge: A new board member was recruited.

The 2012 AGM identified a need to increase hours of operation to better accommodate medical needs. There was a decline in revenue previously available to Handi Transit. Making sure bus operation was adequate to community needs and comfortable while still being able to pay the bill. The 2002 bus has been experiencing some issues. The Board is working closely with the property manager at CLD-SL (Community Living Dryden – Sioux Lookout) to resolve the issues in keeping this 12 year old bus safely on the road. Requests for friends of Handi Transit in fall

2013 raised $6,182.03 by the end of 2013. We are thankful for the contributions and are hopeful that the 2013 shortfall can be recovered. At the December regular meeting of the Sioux Area Senior Activity Centre General Membership a motion to sponsor bus services for the regular card playing days was passed. These days are Monday and Thursday. Beginning January 2, 2014 the bus schedule was changed from Tuesday to Thursday to meet the criteria. Other days remain the same. REPORT FROM QUEEN’S PARK Sarah Campbell, MPP Kenora-Rainy River

As you read this, we will all be very close to hearing what’s in store for Ontarians in terms of the provincial budget. This year’s budget will be tabled at the same time that Hydro One rates are set to climb again, and on the heels of recently inflated prices for much of what is essential to living in Northwestern Ontario. As I write this column, gasoline has just jumped by at least 12

cents a litre in parts of the region; the cost of home and vehicle insurance has increased by as much as 10 percent and natural gas has risen by nearly 30 percent. Heating oil, propane and groceries have all followed suit – all while pay raises have been minimal or non-existent for the average NWO resident. These are the things we need to keep in mind when we take a careful look at this new budget.

As the MPP for this area, I am interested in looking at the whole package in terms of what is being tabled and whether the north is receiving fair consideration. Expenses that might be acceptable to those living in the southern-most parts of the province are often unmanageable for those in the north where we don’t have the option of turning the furnace down when it’s 40 or more degrees below zero or commuting to work on buses or trains. There are a number of things we should consider when the budget is tabled: How does the province’s

Very nerdy. Fun. After seeing my bare face in pictures and the mirror, and telling everybody, “This isn’t really me” (actually, I tell that to the face in the mirror, too) I believe the

the year. Statistics for the first three months of 2014 show a significant and steady increase in passengers for the 55+ members of our community. The Board continues to monitor passenger needs and use, revenue, expense and bus maintenance along with planning for sustainability. Community support is vital in keeping the bus operating. The board

financial plan affect you personally and as a resident of Northwestern Ontario? Do you feel the government has listened to, and, more importantly, addressed the issues that so many have been quite vocal about for the past year? What do you feel is missing from the 2014 budget? Is the budget a financial responsible proposal during these difficult times? To find out which issues I have been working on in the past few months, as well as to hear from you about the answers to some of these important questions, please take a look at my latest Riding

Report, which should be in your mailbox very soon. As always, I need to hear from you in order for me to represent you best. Budget time is even more critical as I will be relying on your direction to inform my decision of whether or not I should support this budget, or reject it and potentially bring us to an election. I truly need to hear what you have to say on the budget – or on any other issue they would like to discuss. Please feel free to stop in at any of my constituency offices or voice your concerns by telephone at 1-800-465-8501 or email scmpp@ndp.on.ca.

irst Nations comedian Don Burnstick performed at the Queen Elizabeth District High School gymnasium to an audience of 180 people last Saturday evening. Burnstick, who is of Cree descent, was born in the Alexander First Nation reserve located outside of Edmonton, Alberta. He has been amusing

audiences across Canada for the past18 years and is no stranger to this area having performed in the newly opened Lac Seul Events Centre in the fall of 2013. Based on the response he received at the time he decided to tour Sioux Lookout. He shared, “It’s a hub. I have spent a lot of time at the airport and every time I come here people have always asked when am I going to do a show here. Tonight it’s nice to be here and I hope everyone enjoys the show.” Speaking about his current tour he added, “What I do is regional tours. My last tour was through Saskatchewan and Alberta, I do 10 to 12 shows per tour and based on the fan base I have in Western Ontario, I decided to tour here. So far I have performed in Kenora,

Thunder Bay tomorrow night Sault Ste. Marie after that, Fort Francis then Winnipeg.” The evening commenced with supporting comedian Nelson Mayer performing a quick paced, humorous warm up to the main event. He is a Métis from Winnipeg and has been touring with Burnstick for the past year .He commented on the tour, “It has been fantastic for me as I have been a fan for years and sharing a stage with Don is just awesome. I’m here to have fun and to enjoy the community. I hope everyone enjoyed the show.” Burnstick then took to the stage and entertained the audience with a quick, witty dialogue utilizing many gestures and comic expressions. He invited those present to be part of the show and not just

These included Native women’s humour, the Lone Ranger, texting, mature age problems and the mysteries of sexual relationships which kept the crowd constantly amused throughout the show. Afterwards he spoke about the night, “It was awesome. I love it when I hear people laugh, Sioux Lookout is a great audience.” His wife Shelley added, “I think the night was

tudents from Grades 3 -7 gathered in the Sacred Heart School gymnasium last Wednesday to watch a performance by the Roseneath Theatre Group of La Maleta (The Suitcase). The play utilizes the themes of bullying and immigration and follows a young refugee’s journey to Canada told through the eyes of 10-year-old Roca who must leave her grandmother and flee her native Colombia to a place of safety. Incorporating both Spanish and English the performance is designed to engage student’s imaginations. They gain insight into what a new student joining their class, who doesn’t speak their language, might be feeling and thinking and how he or she handles being bullied by the other students because he or she is different. Roca has developed an imaginary friend who is a Kogi Girl (the Kogi are an indigenous people of Colombia) who helps her to make the transition to life in Canada. Ultimately it is Roca’s new friendship with Paz, a boy in her class, who begins to help her unpack her situation and truly discover her new home. With the power of their imaginations they

from Thunder Bay, Dryden, Oxdrift, Savant, Lake, Sioux Lookout and Lac Seul. With the success of this year’s show hopefully we can attract more exhibitors next year as we attempt to grow the show regionally.” Cory Lago, President of the Sioux Lookout Anglers and Hunters stated, “We were asked by the Event Centre to come and sit on the committee as we had a good grip on community members and other businesses that would be involved in the outdoor activity. So we had a few different members sit on the committee giving their input and had other members volunteer their time to help create a positive and fun filled event for all the communities to enjoy.” He added, “We have put in a booth for our club and we are also doing the archery range and the crosscut saw and bow-

saw competitions. I am pleased to see the number of people who have attended and we will be here next year.” Activities over the two day period included the Sioux Lookout Anglers and Hunters Archery Range, Trappers Pelt Prep for Profit, K9 Unit Demonstration, Crosscut and Bucksaw Competition, Boater’s Safety Course and Boater’s Safety Test. On Saturday the Obishikokaang Public School Grades 7-8 students held a Fish Fry. Alanna Capar, Special Education TA, at the school explained, “The Fish Fry is a fundraiser for Grades7-8 to go on their class trip at the end of the year so all week the kids have been pulling up nets out of the lake, cleaning the fish and today they are cooking it. We have Walleye, Whitefish, Jackfish and they have also smoked some as well. I think the event is wonderful in promoting the arena and I hope to

see it again next year.” Sandy Zinger from Zinger’s Hunter Hideouts in Dryden said, “It’s that time of the year and we go to all of the shows. This is very well organized, good turnout and we are already looking forward to next year’s Lac Seul show.” Adam McCarty from the Lac Seul Training Centre of Excellence was optimistic, “I think it’s a great event and it will constantly grow year on year. It’s good to see lots of vendors and options for people in the arena to explore.” John and Gertrud Belanger, owners of Bow Jangles in Thunder Bay, were impressed, “It seems like a really awesome venue. We have met lots of interesting people. I heard about the show through a friend of mine who makes bows who lives in Lac Seul so we decided to come and check it out for ourselves.”

Stewart and Klaus OptIOn FOr SIgnature Rossler, who have for 8.5125” some time been5 Col: driving to Dryden to jam at their fortnightly Café event, started to think about the idea of holding something similar in Sioux Lookout. Rossler commented, “We were travelling to Dryden to play and the idea occurred to us about starting something in town as we thought that Sioux Lookout needed a music venue where local musicians could perform publicly amongst friends and fellow musicians. We approached the Legion, who were receptive to the idea, mailed as many musicians in the area as we could find and were amazed at the number of people who expressed interest in the project.” The music during the course of the evening

varied from folk, freeform jazz, rock and included a five-piece country band from Dryden called Borderline 6 Col:from 10.25” and performance’s local musicians that included Doug Vinkle, Rossler, Wood, Stewart, Reilly Scott, Greg Hlady and Barry McLoughlin. Rossler spoke about the night, “It’s was spontaneous, full of purpose, nothing was rehearsed. People came from Dryden to play and listen, it was a fun night and I was very happy with the response and we are grateful to the Legion for supplying the venue.” The evening ended with three young rock guitarists from Sioux Lookout. Wood thanked everyone for attending. Audience member Rosalyn Sanchez commented, “I thought it went well.” The organizers plan to hold Open Stage at the end of each month.

PFFNHS celebrates academic and athletic success of students at annual awards banquet Tim Brody Associate Editor

W

ell dressed students accepted awards for hard work and perseverance and applauded their peers at the Pelican Falls First Nations High School Academic and Athletic Awards Banquet April 25. Prom followed the awards banquet. Waneek Horn-Miller provided opening remarks. The guest speaker from the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory near Montreal cocaptained the Canadian Women’s Water Polo Team at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in the same year. She told students she began to dream her Olympic dream at the age of seven. She told students she has been greatly inspired throughout her life by her mother, Native Rights Activist KahnTineta Horn. Her mother she said, encouraged her children to be warriors. Horn-Miller said her mother encouraged her and her siblings to put 100 per cent into everything they did. She also spoke of other Aboriginal sports heroes who inspired her such as Alwyn Morris who won a gold medal in Kayak at the 1984 Olympics and who is from her community. She has also been inspired by Billy Mills who won the Olympic 10,000 metres in 1964. “Don’t be afraid to fall. You always have people to help you back up again,” she said. This message she said, comes from personal experience. Horn-Miller shared with students how as a child she had been stabbed by a Canadian solider during the Oka Crisis and was told by doctors the wound was so near her heart she was lucky to be alive. Already excelling at athletics at the time, she thought about quitting after this incident but was inspired by her

mother to persevere. Ten years to the day she was stabbed she went on to represent Canada at the Olympic Games. “We don’t come from a people that are quitters. We don’t come from a people that are lazy,” she told students. She encouraged students to dream and then to follow those dreams and so inspire the next generation. Over the course of the evening students were recognized for academic and athletic excellence and potential graduating students were honoured. Academic awards were handed out first. The Male Attendance Award was presented to Micah Moskotaywenene. The Female Attendance Award went to Elizabeth Fiddler. The Jr. Business Studies Award was presented to Rodney Day. PITCH-IN CANADA PROGRAM BE A SUPERHERO IN YOUR COMMUNITY!

ONLINE COMMUNITY EVENTS CALENDAR PROMISES TO BE CLEARINGHOUSE OF LOCAL EVENTS

Congratulations Sioux Lookout! Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2013 campaign during which more than 650 people helped clean up our community.

Do you ever find yourself saying, “Oh, that sounded like such a great event, but I didn’t hear about it until it was over!”? Fear not, the Municipality of Sioux Lookout has the answer to your social and recreational woes: “the Hub of What’s Happening!”

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is once again participating in the Pitch-In Canada Program.

The Municipality’s new website (www.siouxlookout.ca) now offers an easily accessible, free, online community events calendar!

Anyone wishing to participate in the 2014 Pitch-In Program is urged to register their project at: Pitch-In Headquarters, Public Works Garage, 41 Fifth Avenue OR Customer Service, Municipal Office, 25 Fifth Avenue

The community events calendar can be accessed on the Municipality’s new website: http://www.siouxlookout.ca/en/Calendar/Events/SubmitEvent.aspx, and enables local service clubs, organizations, sports leagues – anyone with an event that is open to the public – to post their event information on the calendar. The submissions can include posters, contact information, links to websites, and the online calendar has the ability to “map the location!” The success of this online clearinghouse of community events hinges on its use by local organizations. So, what are you waiting for? Get your events posted online today! For more information, please contact Brian P. Rail Safety an issue in Municipality of Sioux Lookout rom April 28 to May 4, Canada will celebrate Rail Safety Week under the theme See Tracks? Think Train! CN Police will mark Rail Safety Week with a public awareness campaign aimed at reducing the number of trespassing and crossing related accidents. In addition, the police force

is asking the public to help save lives by calling CN Police at 1-800-465-9239 to report unsafe behaviour on railway property. Throughout the week, CN Police will conduct safety initiatives at commuter stations and railway crossings across Canada and the United States. Although no activities are planned by the CN for Sioux Lookout, the public

should be aware of the danger that can be incurred crossing local railway tracks. Sioux Lookout OPP Staff Sergeant Nathan Schmidt spoke about rail safety, “Every year we either have an injury or a fatality involving trains and the majority of the occurrences involve pedestrians on the railroad track and a lot of times they are looking

for shortcuts to get to a location. The trains often look like they are going slower than they really are, Northwestern Ontario has lots of curves in the tracks and people are not often prepared.” He continued,“ We have laid a number of railway safety act charges and we issued 42 charges in 2013 under the Railway Safety Act. All of these were related

to people trespassing on CN property. We have also had collisions with vehicles over the last couple of years and these happened at controlled and uncontrolled crossings with a majority of the times resulting in a fatality.” Schmidt concluded, “We fully support the CN police and we have an excellent working relationship and we support each other when we are dealing with

incidents in and around the railway track.” Mayor Denis Leney stated, “I would hope that the city of Sioux Lookout takes note that this is Railway Safety Week and that all citizens will remember that to cross over the CN line is trespassing and it is enforced by the CN Police and the OPP.” He added, “Remember any time is train time.”

Minor hockey stars honoured for shining season

T

he Sioux Lookout Minor Hockey Association (SLMHA) celebrated it’s Midget, Bantam, Peewee and Atom leagues with a special awards banquet on April 23 at the Legion. League President Angie Forbes opened the evening by stating minor hockey runs on the backs of volunteers. She stated the association is in need of more volunteers to help out with all facets of the organization. “I cannot stress how important it is that every face in this room make a conscious effort to step forward willingly now because without your support minor hockey doesn’t happen,” she said. The league will hold their AGM on May 7 at the Lamplighter Motel at 7 p.m. She thanked volunteers within the organization for their contributions throughout the past season. Past-President of the association Steve Forbes then honoured longtime SLMHA volunteer George Samuel for his years of commitment to the organization. He called Samuel a trail blazer and said he had worn just about every hat in the

organization. “George has seen a lot of hockey come and go and has spent literally thousands of volunteer hours in cold arenas across Northwestern Ontario over the several decades he’s been involved with minor hockey. Think about that for a moment, several decades of volunteering for hockey. “Without further ado, it gives me great pleasure to announce that from this point forward, the trainer of the year award, which was awarded at the last banquet… will now be known as the George Samuel Trainer of the Year Award.” Samuel received a standing ovation, then humbly accepted the honour with a simple thank you. Last year the SLMHA named its most improved referee award after longtime referee Rob Favot. Sara Bye received the Coach of the Year Award. A glowing letter of recommendation extolled her fairness, dedication and coaching skill and spirit of fun. The Award for Most Outstanding Team went to the Sioux Lookout Jr. Flyers AA Bantam Team. The Jamie Falk Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Angie

Forbes who also was endorsed in a letter as being extremely committed to the league. In the Atom division the Wasaya League Award went to the Sioux Flyers Orange. The depth of the team’s bench meant there were no weak lines on the team and players could be mixed up to run special teams plays. “We improved in small steps, but you also have to look at the commitment of the parents, the thousands of dollars, the thousands of miles travelling. That’s a huge commitment to their kids,” Schulz added. About half of the team is moving on to try out for even higher levels. The team will retain a solid core of veteran players to work with upcoming players. “We never measured success by wins and losses; it was all about developing the work ethic and character. The kids set the goals to win themselves,” Schulz concluded.
