SDC administration in Beijing The SDC administration is located at University of Chinese Academy of Sciences’ (UCAS) Olympic Village Campus on Datun Road in the northern part of Beijing close to the Olympic Stadium. The address is: Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research (SDC) University of Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Olympic Village Campus, Building 5, 4th floor, Office 406. Datun Rd. no. 3, Chaoyang District, 100101 Beijing In Chinese: 中国北京朝阳区大屯路甲 3 号中国科学院大学(奥运村园区)5 号楼 406 To find the SDC administration, enter the main gate of the UCAS’ Olympic Village Campus from Datun Road (where the Chinese flag is). Then follow the road left around the front building and the dormitory building behind it. The number 5 building (a 9-storey grey student dormitory building) is now visible on your right hand side app. 150 meters away. Enter the glass door in the corner of the building. The SDC administration is on the 4th floor. NB: There are no ‘SDC’ signs in front of the building or on the 4th floor when you exit the elevator.

Map of the area around the SDC office

Facilities at the SDC administration The daily management of the SDC includes the Danish SDC director Hans Gregersen, executive vice dean Hu Zhengyi, a Danish study administrator, and a few Danish and Chinese SDC staff members. The joint Danish-Chinese SDCsecretariat is staffed by Mr. Yuan Piye and Ms. Xin Wang (who both speaks English). There are three offices for SDC teaching staff. Each office can be shared by three teachers. The offices are equipped with desks, chairs, and printers. The offices have no computers - bring your own laptop computer. Internet access is free but requires a username and password which you can get from the SDC staff upon arrival. Many websites, including some foreign media, are banned and cannot be accessed from China unless your laptop computer has a VPNclient installed. Two WIFI-connections are available: SDC-Office1 and SDC-Office2. The passwords are sdcoffice1 and sdcoffice2.

3

If you need access to an office out of normal office hours, you can borrow a key from one of the SDC staff members. There is a printing room at the SDC office floor equipped with a Xerox, printers and a scanner. Hot and cold drinking water is available in the printing room. SDC students are allowed to use the printing facilities at the SDC office floor for limited printing tasks. Compendia or other large amounts of materials should preferably be printed in one of the small printing shops outside of campus. Contact SDC staff member Yuan Piye or Xin Wang for assistance. A Conference room for 12-15 people is available at the SDC office floor. It can be used for meetings with groups of students or for teaching purposes. The conference room is equipped with an overhead projector. Additional rooms can be reserved on the 5th and 6th floor for teaching purposes. Ask SDC staff member Yuan Piye to reserve the rooms. The SDC office has a small collection of text books and material relevant for the four Master’s programmes for students and teachers to use. If you brought a spare teaching book with you from Denmark, feel free to leave it there for the students to enjoy. If you want to borrow any material contact SDC staff member Yuan Piye or Xin Wang. Information regarding SDC students (complete name lists, contact information, etc.) can be obtained from Xin Wang at the SDC secretariat. Important: When you arrive at the SDC, please come by the SDC administration to register and be introduced to the facilities. Also, you are requested to complete some documents related to the teaching.

SIM card

The SDC office has purchased a number of Chinese SIM cards for the Danish teachers to use for domestic calls while in China. The SIM cards contain 4

names and numbers of SDC staff members. The SIM cards serve as phone cards only – no data can be downloaded – and they do not support international calls (you can, however, receive international calls). The SIM cards can be used free of charge but must be returned by the end of your stay. Contact the SDC staff members to get a SIM card. If you want to buy a SIM card that supports data traffic, we suggest you buy from China Unicom, which is widely recognized as the best 3G operator in China.

Reimbursement of personal out-of-pocket expenses

If you for some reason have personal out-of-pocket expenses related to teaching activities you can receive a reimbursement if the following conditions are met: 1. All expenses must be approved in writing by both the Danish and Chinese SDC Director 10 days in advance. 2. Out-of-pocket expenses can only be reimbursed if you get an official invoice (正规发票) issued to 中国科学院大学中丹学院. You will often have to ask for an official invoice specifically. All expenses related to educational field trips, excursions, purchase of lab equipment, etc. must be approved in writing by the SDC directors at least 10 days in advance. Any items purchased must be stored at the SDC office after use unless they are disposable.

Teaching rooms The SDC has four teaching rooms at its disposal – one for each of the four MSc Programmes. The teaching rooms are located at the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences 10 minutes’ walk from the Best Western Hotel and the SDC administration.

5

Once you enter the main gate of the Institute of Psychology you’ll find the entrance to the classrooms left of the basketball court at the back of the parking lot. The four teaching rooms (D101-1 to D101-4) are located on the ground floor. You’ll see them once you enter the glass door. All teaching rooms are equipped with a projector and a white board or black board. The teaching rooms are not equipped with computers so bring your own laptop for teaching purposes. Important: There is no WI-FI connection in the classroom. A wire connection is available so your computer must have an Ethernet port. The Internet is accessible for teachers (but not for students, i.e. the students cannot access the Internet during class!!). You need to register your laptop with the Institute of Psychology first (otherwise access to the Internet is denied). You need a program on the computer to get online – please contact SDC staff member Yuan Piye in advance and he will escort you to the relevant office and help you register. Remember to bring your laptop. If you have a newer Apple laptop, you need to bring an Ethernet adapter to China. If you have special needs related to teaching facilities, please contact SDC staff member Yuan Piye.

Laboratory facilities The SDC does not have its own lab facilities but may use the lab facilities at different CAS-institutes. Detailed planning must be done well in advance (often several weeks if not months!) as the permission of many people on the Chinese side is necessary. Also, it may take time to identify a lab that has the necessary instruments and lab equipment. There is a big difference between labs in Denmark and China and different rules and safety regulations apply to what students are actually allowed to do in the lab. 6

If experimental lab work is an integrated part of your course, you are strongly advised to make a detailed list with the following information and send it to the Chinese course coordinator (if any) as well as the daily management of SDC (Morten Laugesen and Hu Zhengyi). •

Purpose of the experimental lab work

Participants (DK/CN teachers, instructors, number of students, etc.)

Instruments, chemicals, materials, lab equipment, etc. needed (the more detailed the better)

Any other special requirements

If the experimental lab work requires purchasing any chemicals, materials, etc. the SDC-directors must approve the expenditure in advance.

Canteens There are several canteens at the Olympic Village Campus where food is inexpensive. The biggest and best is the canteen opposite the Institute of Biophysics. On the ground floor, you can queue up together with Chinese students and teachers for cafeteria food (app. 12 RMB for a bowl of rice and a plate of food) or you can go to the first floor for a variety of special offers that are a bit more expensive. You need a canteen card to purchase food in the canteen – no cash is accepted. Buy a canteen card (10 RMB) at the counter after entering the canteen, add money to it and you are ready to line up. Ask one of the SDC staff members to accompany you to the canteen the first time. Most campus canteens are open for breakfast (6.30-8.00), lunch (11.0013.00) and dinner (17.00-19.00). Lunch break is from 11.40-13.30

SDC’s Information platform - Moodle SDC uses Moodle as the information platform to upload teaching materials, lesson plans, important notices, etc. In order to access the platform and upload material you must be a registered user. The link for the SDC Moodle system is: http://sdc-moodle.samf.aau.dk/ Please register at http://sdc-moodle.samf.aau.dk/. Afterwards, notify SDC’s Moodle administrator Johannes Vørts about your registration and let him

know your username and the course you are teaching. Your user will then be upgraded to Professor and you will be able to edit and post new information on Moodle. If you have never worked with Moodle before you can read more here: >

http://moodletuts.com/

>

http://docs.moodle.org/23/en/Managing_a_Moodle_course

>

http://www.elsa.aau.dk/Moodle.moodle-support.0.html?&L=0

The internet in Beijing is unreliable and sometimes very slow. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you upload any big files before departure from Denmark. It’s also a good chance to get acquainted with Moodle before going to China. Lesson plans, including information about the course literature, must be uploaded to Moodle no later than 2 weeks before the course begins.

Teaching schedule Teaching at SDC is divided into a morning block and an afternoon block separated by lunch break: 11

Morning:

08.00-11.40

Lunch break: 11.40-13.30 Afternoon:

13.30-17.00

Classes in China normally last 50 minutes followed by a 10 minutes break but teaching can be organized differently in consultation with the students within the two blocks.

Chinese language courses for Danish students

During the spring semester 2013, Chinese language courses for the Danish students are scheduled Monday mornings and Friday afternoons. Therefore, no teaching can be scheduled before 13.30 on Mondays and after 11.40 on Fridays.

Evaluation of the teaching

The SDC administration will automatically evaluate the different modules of every SDC programme. The students complete the evaluation schemes online and the summarized result is send directly to the Danish and Chinese Head of Educational Programme (HEP).

Accommodation You are responsible for arranging your own stay in Beijing. For shorter stays, we recommend you stay at the Best Western OL Stadium Hotel located close to the UCAS’ Olympic Village Campus.

Best Western OL Stadium Hotel SDC has made a special price agreement with Best Western OL Stadium Hotel located close to the SDC administration and the SDC teaching rooms. The Address is: Best Western OL Stadium Hotel No. 1 Datun Road, Bei Sha Tan, Chaoyang District, 100101 Beijing

14

In Chinese: 北京亚奥国际酒店 北京市朝阳区北沙滩大屯路甲一号 Rooms are RMB 488/night including free Internet and breakfast in the hotel restaurant. In order to make a reservation, write an email to the sales manager Mr. Liu, 55652405@qq.com with “SDC Professor” in the subject line and provide him with the following information: -

Name of guest

-

Check-in-date

-

Check-out-date

-

Smoking or non-smoking room

There are several restaurants located nearby the Best Western OL Stadium Hotel and many of them have menu cards with photos. Cheap snacks can be bought from the numerous street vendors. Banks can be found in front of the hotel on the opposite side of Datun Road. A large supermarket (Wu-Mart) is located 2-300 meters east of the hotel. When you exit the main entrance of the Best Western Hotel, walk east on Datun Road (大屯路). The UCAS’ Olympic Village Campus entrance is on the northern (opposite) side of the street. Pass through the main gate of the campus (where the Chinese flag is) and follow the road left around the front building and the dormitory building behind. The number 5 building (a 9-storey grey building) is now visible on your right hand side. The SDC administration is on the 4th floor.

Transportation from the airport Taxi A taxi from the airport to the Best Western OL Stadium Hotel costs 70-100 RMB depending on the route and traffic conditions. If you arrive at Terminal 3, Taxis leave from the B2 level (2 levels below arrival). 15

Shuttle bus You can also take an airport shuttle bus directly to the Best Western OL Stadium Hotel. Take shuttle bus number 6 bound for Olympic Village – the Best Western OL Stadium Hotel is the last stop on the route. Buses leave every 30 minutes from the B1 level at the airport. Tickets cost 16 RMB (only cash is accepted) and must be bought from the ticket office next to the number 6 bus stop. The bus ride takes approximately one hour. If you arrive in Terminal 2, taxies and airport shuttle buses leave outside the departure hall. The number 6 shuttle bus bound for the Olympic Village leaves from exit 13.

Payment and banking in Beijing Beijing is to a large extent still geared towards cash transactions. You can use International credit cards in some larger supermarkets, restaurants and hotels but it is advisable to carry some cash at all times. ATM If you need to withdraw cash from an ATM we advise you to go to a bank, which can be found at almost every street corner in Beijing. Most of them have 24hr self-service banking and accept major international credit cards (VISA, Mastercard, AmEx). IMPORTANT: We have received reports that the ATM at Best Western OL Stadium Hotel has returned fraud money, so avoid using it.

Transportation in Beijing Taxi Taxies are widely available and relatively cheap. Pricing: Daytime (5:00 - 22:59) -

Meter starts at 13 RMB, which will take you three kilometers. 3-15 km: 2,3 RMB per km. Over 15 km: 3,45 RMB per km. 16

Nighttime (23:00 - 4:59) -

Meter starts at 14 RMB. There is an extra fee of 20% per km

Surcharges: -

Waiting time and low speed (less than 12 km/h) is charged 2,3 RMB per extra five minutes

-

Fuel surcharge: 2-3 RMB per ride.

Very few drivers speak or read anything but Chinese so bring the name and address of your destination written in Chinese characters on a piece of paper to show the driver. Metro Although the metro system is being expanded rapidly these years, the number of metro lines (presently 15) is still limited considering the size of Beijing. Tickets (plastic cards) are 2 RMB regardless of the distance and are purchased at the stations from the metro staff or automatic ticket machines. You may transfer between different metro lines on the same ticket as long as you do not exit the metro system. NB: Be aware that the metro can be extremely crowded during rush hours. You can purchase a rechargeable Traffic Smart Card (一卡通) in most metro stations for 20 RMB. With money on the card, you can skip the ticket queues and head straight for the trains every time you take the metro. Place the card on the magnetic card reader on the turnstile when entering and exiting the metro system. The metro station closest to the UCAS’ Olympic Village Campus is the Olympic Green on metro line 8 (approximately 5-600 meters east of the campus’ main entrance). Busses

17

Busses are very cheap (only 1-5 RMB per ride depending on the distance) but the schedules are in Chinese characters only. Notice that the bus conductor often does not give change. In most busses you can use the Traffic Smart Card and get a discount.
