2019 SIMPSON STORM FOOTBALL

Coming off the team’s biggest win production since 2013, Simpson football is excited the direction the program is headed. The Storm finished 2018 7-3 and 6-2 in American Rivers Conference play, the most victories Simpson has tallied in conference play since 2003. As a whole, the team was recognized very well by the league at the end of the season, especially with two big awards. Head coach Matt Jeter walked away with Coach of the Year honors, while linebacker Michael Connor was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year. Along with these two, 11 other members of the team were either listed as first team, second team or honorable mention allconference. The Storm had a chance to take the conference crown and year ago, but with a one-point loss to Central and a loss to Dubuque on senior day moved Simpson to tie for second, which is the team’s best finish since earning second in 2013. With the thought of being so close to the program’s first league title since 1997 in the back of their minds, Jeter and company are ready to go in 2019. “We’re fired up and looking forward to playing someone in a different colored jersey right now,” Jeter stated. The Storm return 35 letterwinners from last year’s squad, five starters on offense and six on defense. Leading the offense is senior quarterback Tanner Krueger, who has experienced players placed all around him in the receiving and running back groups. “I think anytime you bring the quarterback, back, you’re excited for him to be the starter and going into the season,” Jeter explained. “He

has a lot of weapons behind him; Sam Bartlett, Joe McNally, Austin Bell, a great offensive line and a running back committee, we have a lot of pieces to the puzzle right now, but it all starts at Krueger at quarterback.” On the other side of the ball, the team’s defense looks to climb new heights this season after leading the league in points allowed a year ago. Connor will be surrounded by three all-conference selections from 2018, highlighted by D3football.com Preseason All-American, Brendan Holmes. “The expectations of the defense has continued to rise each year since I started back in 2016,” he said. Jeter brings in three new coaches this season as alums, Dan Kelley and Braedon Tovey join the staff along with George Love. Kelley oversees the offensive line, Tovey controls specials teams and Love is the defensive coordinator. Jeter will go back to calling plays on defense just like he did at Central Missouri to help get Love upto-speed. “It’s just like riding a bike,” he said. “I feel good.”

OFFENSE

The Storm followed the direction of 2017’s offense and climbed the American Rivers Conference charts once again in 2018. James Hoffman called the plays for just the second year in 2018, but led Simpson to second place in the league with 439.4 yards per game, after finishing fifth the year prior. Senior Tanner Krueger was an all-conference honorable mention selection at quarterback last season and finished second in the league with 2,531 yards to help the

THE STORM

Storm reach new heights in the conference. Krueger had limited experience at the position heading into 2018, so with a year of starting under his belt, he is expecting better results as his top target returns in Joe McNally. McNally led the receiving corps with 633 yards and five touchdowns during his sophomore season and looks to be a threat as Simpson graduated three of its top-four options for Krueger in 2018. Senior Sam Bartlett looks to help spread the load at the wideout position as he tallied 371 yards a year ago for two scores. The West brothers, Jake and Luke will be in the mix for more receptions this year and both combined with 24 catches for 224 yards and one touchdown. The biggest hit might be felt at running back with the departure of all-conference first teamer and D3football.com All-West Region Second Teamer, Cam Bunting. Bunting tallied 1,396 of the team’s 1,862 rushing yards and tallied 13 touchdowns on the ground. To fill his role, junior Joe Meyer will become the top-rushing option in the backfield. Meyer tallied 193 yards and one score a year ago. Krueger contributed to his workload and produced 213 yards while rushing with three touchdowns. Simpson brings back two starting offensive linemen in Mason Spree and Caleb Striegel. The Storm lost two all-conference linemen due to graduation and look to bolster the guys paving the way for the backfield.

DEFENSE

The Storm defense wanted to out-work their offensive counterpart on the field and proved they did by leading the conference with scoring at 19.6 points per game and allowed only 345.9 yards per contest to finish in third. For the third year in a row, Simpson ended second in passing yards (194.6 ypg). Adding to the passing totals, the defense tallied 15 interceptions to pace the league. Brendan Holmes led the team with five to tie for second in the conference. Holmes returns to help captain the strong defense that brings back six starters from last year. Holmes heads into 2019 as a preseason D3football. com All-American after being named an all-conference first team selection the last two years. Holmes also added 89 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss from the edge. Ryan Lehr’s departure split up one of the top safety combos in the conference after he graduated early following his junior season in 2018. Quinn Slaven and Parker Schenk return with experience from their cornerback positions this season. Slaven tallied 25 tackles, while tipping away three passes. Schenk appeared in seven contests last season with 15 tackles. Cam Callion will vie for playing time in the secondary with five appearances a year ago in which he knocked down two passes. Senior linebacker Michael Connor returns after having an impressive campaign in 2018. Connor was tabbed the A-R-C Defensive Most Valuable Player by leading the league with 113 tackles and 8.5 sacks, while coming in third with 16.0 tackles for loss. All-conference second teamer Joe Weppler will help Connor anchor the linebackers in 2019. Weppler amassed 61 tackles. Up front, Trey Chumbley will lead the end rushers. Chumbley produced 3.5 sacks with 7.5 tackles for loss coming from his defensive end position a year ago. Jack Bootsmiller will help Chumbley force the opposition to hurry and will look to improve on his 19 tackles, with 4.0 being for loss last year. Chris Bowles will also be in the mix to hault opposing offenses and team up with Chumbley and Bootsmiller.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Simpson had some shoes to fill in 2018 on the special teams side of the ball and it appears that’s the case this fall. Nathan Hawkins missed most of 2017 as punter for the Storm but came on strong in 2018 and landed on the all-conference first team list by leading the league and finishing 10th in the country in punting average. Along with his quarterback duties, Krueger might be tasked with taking over the punting reign once again. Zach Kreider has experience punting and may be asked to take over those duties as the season gets going. Kreider returns as the top choice for the kicking duties as well, but only connected on one of his five kicks in 2018. Kyle Derner will serve as the main guy for kickoffs as he averaged 53.2 yards per boot last season.

THE COACHES

HEAD COACH

MATT JETER Matt Jeter was named the 2018 American Rivers Conference Coach of the Year, becoming the seventh coach in program history to receive the honor and first since 2003 after leading the team to a 7-3 finish and 6-2 A-R-C record. The 2018 American Rivers Conference Coach of the Year enters his fourth season at the helm in 2019. The Storm finished 7-3 and 6-2 in league play last season, capturing their highest conferencewin total since 2003. Jeter and his defense paced the league by allowing just 19.6 points per game and generated 24 takeaways. Jeter and his staff produced 12 allconference performers during the year, highlighted by the A-R-C Defensive Most Valuable Player, Michael Connor. Jeter was a two-year starter at cornerback for the Simpson football team from 1996-97, helping the Storm to a record of 22-2 and two trips to the NCAA Division III Playoffs. The 33rd head coach in program history, Jeter enjoyed a successful run as an assistant coach before taking over the Storm. Jeter was at NCAA Division II Central Missouri from 2010-15, starting out as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach before taking over as the defensive coordinator from 2011-15. Jeter helped Central Missouri to a 47-22 mark in his six seasons on staff, including three postseason appearances. The Mules won at least six games each season during Jeter’s tenure, highlighted by a record-setting 11-win season in 2010 when the Mules finished 11-3 and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Central Missouri posted eight-win campaigns in 2011, 2014 and 2015, appearing in the Kanza Bowl in 2011 and winning the Texarkana Bowl in 2014.

2019 SIMPSON STORM FOOTBALL

The Mules went 8-3 last fall, narrowly missing a berth in the postseason. Jeter’s defenses consistently ranked among the best in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Mules were third in total defense in 2015 (365.8 ypg), fifth in 2013 (391.6 ypg) and fourth in 2012 (365.8). His units had a knack for creating turnovers, generating 59 in the last two seasons, including a MIAA-leading 30 in 2014. In five years as defensive coordinator, Jeter’s teams allowed less than 23 points per game while 16 defensive players earned all-MIAA honors. Prior to joining the staff at Central Missouri, Jeter spent eight years as an assistant at NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision member Drake University. He served as the defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator for the Bulldogs, helping Drake win the Pioneer Football League title in 2004. He was the defensive coordinator in 2007, piloting a unit that led the PFL in redzone scoring and ranked fourth in the nation with 31 forced turnovers. Jeter helped the Bulldogs to six consecutive winning seasons from 2004-09, including a 10-2 mark in 2004, a 9-2 record in 2006 and an 8-3 mark in 2009. Jeter started at cornerback for head coach Jim Williams in 1996 and 1997, the most successful two-year period Simpson football history. The Storm won back-to-back Iowa Conference titles, going 10-1 in 1996 in 12-1 in 1997. Jeter was a team captain on the 1997 team that set a school record for wins in a season and made an appearance in the national semifinals. He also earned two letters as a member of the track and field team.

He transferred to Simpson from Iowa Central Community College, where he was a first team allregion selection and team captain as a sophomore in 1995. Jeter earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Simpson in 1998. He and his wife, Kimberly, have two sons: Jordan and Jayden.

THE GLORY YEARS

Legendary head coach Jim Williams took over a struggling program in 1987, leading Simpson to a mark of 106-48-1 in 15 seasons at the helm. Simpson won four IIAC Championships and appeared in the postseason five times under Williams.

1893

Simpson first organized a football team in 1892, but did not begin playing an intercollegiate schedule until 1893. During 1893, Simpson played a five-game schedule in which the squad compiled 174 points and went undefeated against Des Moines University and Drake (twice). Captained by Fletcher Homan, the team had no real coach; but student manager, Charles Cheney, a senior, is credited as being the first Simpson football coach.

1923

Under the direction of head coach Noel Workman, Simpson won the first Iowa Conference football title in 1923. After dropping the first game of the year to Iowa State, the Redmen won their next eight games, including five shutouts. The team, led by captain and All-Conference tackle Joe Meek, outscored the opposition 289-37 in the nine game. It was during this time that the legend of Kenneth “Moco” Mercer was born. Mercer scored 348 points and was named All-Conference at halfback three times (1923-35). He earned 15 letters in four different sports at Simpson (basketball, football, wrestling, and track) and later went onto a professional career with the Philadelphia Eagles before returning to coach at Simpson in the 1930s.

1924

Simpson won its second consecutive Iowa Conference title, going 8-0-1. Included in the eight victories were five shutouts, matching the total from the previous season. The Redmen won their first seven games before a 14-14 tie against Iowa Wesleyan on Nov. 21. Simpson ended the season the following week with a 6-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan. All-Conference selections included Kenneth Karr, Moco Mercer, Walter Officer, and Leslie Holiday.

1925

Simpson remained on top of the Iowa Conference standings in 1925, sharing the league title with Upper Iowa. Although Simpson lost two of its first three games, the Redmen recovered to post a 6-2-1 record. During the season, “Moco” Mercer set an Iowa Conference record for most points scored in a career with 285. That record stood until 1998 when it was broken by another Simpson running back, Guy Leman. Noel Workman left to become the head coach at Iowa State following the season, going 22-3-2 with three IIAC titles in three seasons.

1931

Although the nation was suffering from the grips of the Depression, there was no depression in Simpson football in the early 1930s. Simpson captured the Iowa Conference Championship in 1931 under the direction of first-year head coach Lloyd “Judd” Dean. The team put together a 7-3 record, remaining flawless in Iowa Conference action with a 6-0 mark. A key to the Redmen’s success was the play of fullback Edwin “Kink” Richards, who went on to sign with the NFL’s New York Giants.

2019 SIMPSON STORM FOOTBALL

1933

Simpson won the 1933 Iowa Conference title despite Iowa Wesleyan going undefeated in its six game schedule. Simpson won its second league crown in three years under the complicated “Stanley-Dean” system, which rated teams on the basis of strength of the schedule. Simpson went 7-2-1, going unbeatedn in conference play. Simpson played the first night game in school history on Oct. 6 against Central.

1934

The “Stanley-Dean” system led to a second-straight IIAC Championship in 1934 despite Simpson’s 3-2-1 record in the league. Because of the circumstances, writer Buck Turnbull stated in the history of the Iowa Conference book, “The conference did not recognize a championship team.” However, since the league had adopted the Stanley-Dean System, for the better or worse, Simpson is listed in the books as the 1934 Iowa Conference champion. The system was dropped in 1935.

1949

Simpson won its first conference title since 1934 by going 8-1 under third-year head coach R.G. “Hap” Miller. The lone loss was a 23-17 setback at Coe, but the Redmen won six straight to close the season. Backfield ace John Mills, tackle Bob Miller and fullback Jim Wright earned all-conference honors. Miller went on to serve as head football coach for 10 years, going 34-473. Remembered fondly for his efforts in the physical education department, Miller had a successful stint as Simpson’s head baseball coach, taking the Redmen to the 1958 NAIA National Baseball Tournament.

1969

After finishing in second place the previous two seasons, Simpson ended a 20-year conference title drought by going 8-2 under fourth-year head coach John Sullivan. The Redmen boasted gutty 200-pound linemen, like Tom Powell and Dave Halford, who held their own against their 300-pound competition. Center Rich Heckman and tackles Jim Oplt and Perry Hunter provided big holes throughout the season while Indianola native Joe Blake, Sr., took the conference by storm. Simpson ended the regular season with a 30-7 win over William Jewell, ranked 10th in NAIA. Simpson went on to play in the Mineral Water Bowl, which ended in a 21-0 loss to St. John’s (Minn.). Sullivan earned NAIA Coach of the Year honors at season’s end.

1. Head coach John Sullivan and quarterback Joe Blake led Simpson to an Iowa Conference title and an appearance in the Mineral Water Bowl in 1969. 2. Two-time IIAC MVP Brad Jorgensen led the Storm to league titles in 1996 and 1997. 3. League MVP Mike Donnenwerth led Simpson to its last NCAA Playoff appearance in 2003. 4. The rushing tandem of Trent Nauholz (24) and Rob Sinclair (22) led Simpson to a perfect 10-0 mark in the 1991 regular season.

1988

Going into the 1987 season, Simpson had experienced 14 losing seasons in 15 years, prompting the hiring of legendary high school coach, Jim Williams. It took just one year for the move to pay off, as the Redmen shocked the league by going 9-2 and a perfect 8-0 to win the IIAC. A junior transfer from Nebraska-Omaha named Ricky Gales won the rushing title with 1,301 yards and helped Simpson to its first-ever NCAA Playoff appearance, a 29-27 los to Wis.-Whitewater. In one of the biggest games in the school history, Simpson forced a missed extra point in the final seconds to beat Central 14-13. In just his second year, Williams was named IIAC Coach of the Year.

1989

Though the 1989 season didn’t produce a conference title thanks to a 54-30 loss to Central in the regular season finale, it did result in another trip to the postseason. An unstoppable Ricky Gales set NCAA Division III records for rushing (2,035 yards) and scoring (166 points) as Simpson went 8-3. Gales saved his best effort for last, rushing for a then all-divisions record 389 yards in a playoff loss to St. John’s (Minn.). The Redmen averaged 514 yards and 45.5 points per game and junior quarterback Joe Blake, Jr. led Division III in passing efficiency (203.3). Sophomore kicker Ned Greer led the nation in points by a kicker with 61, going 49-for-50 on extra point attempts.

1991

Jim Williams’ 1991 squad rolled to a 10-0 regular season record, the first undefeated regular

season since 1893. A perfect 8-0 mark gave Simpson an IIAC Championship and a trip to the playoffs, where the Redmen lost to UW-La Crosse 28-13 at the UNI Dome. The 1991 Redmen defense was the best in school history, posting the No. 4 total defense in the country (183.5 yards per game) while allowing the seventh-fewest points (87). Led by Trent Nauholz and Rob Sinclair, the rushing offense ranked 13th in the nation (269.2 yards per game). Twelve players earned all-conference honors and Jim Williams was named the IIAC Coach of the Year.

1996

Simpson won its 10th IIAC football title with an unblemished 10-0 regular season mark, including 8-0 in the league. The program’s fourth trip to the NCAA Playoffs ended with a 21-18 loss to St. John’s, snapping a 13-game winning streak. Junior QB Brad Jorgensen was named IIAC MVP and Jim Williams earned Coach of the Year honors. Jorgensen threw for 1,953 yards and led the offense to a school record 459 points scored.

1997

Arguably the greatest season in school history, the 1997 Storm went 10-0 in the regular season, won the IIAC Championship and advanced to the semifinal round of the playoffs before losing to eventual-champion Mt. Union. The Storm won an exciting opening round game over Whitewater, getting the winning score on a 25-yard TD pass from Jorgensen to Corey Christensen with 36 seconds left. Simpson then went on to route Augsburg at home in the second round. Simpson set school records for total offense (6,829 yards), points (595), rushing yards (3,837), passing yards (2,931), first downs (295) and total plays (1,113). Jorgensen became the first player in IIAC history to win back-to-back MVP honors and Williams earned his fifth Coach of the Year accolade.

2003

The Storm went 9-1 and earned an at-large bid to the playoffs after finishing second in the IIAC. No. 20 Simpson lost a 26-20, double overtime heart-breaker No. 11 St. Norbert in the first round. Led by All-Americans Mike Donnenwerth (QB) and Dusty Kain (WR), the Simpson offense set school records for passing yards (3,540), attempts (422) and touchdowns (33). Donnenwerth set school marks for passing yards (3,461), attempts (413), and touchdowns (32). Kain set school records for receptions (93), yards (1,466) and TDs (14). Second-year head coach Jay Niemann’s defense generated 43 turnovers, led by All-American corner Kyle Westphal 10 INTs and six forced fumbles. Niemann took home IIAC Coach of the Year honors and Donnenwerth was named league MVP.

RICKY GALES

1988-89 • Running back

Deric “Ricky” Gales is arguably the finest running back ever to put on a Simpson uniform. After spending two years at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the 6-1, 195-pound Des Moines native joined Simpson in time for the 1988 season. Gales led Simpson to its first Iowa Conference title in 19 years and was named first team All-Conference. Entering the 1989 season, Gales’ star was on the rise. He was selected as a preseason All-American by three different publications, the Football Gazette, Sporting News, and the College Football Preview. By the time the season ended, Gales would rewrite the record book and was named the National Small College Player of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). He would later receive the AFCA’s Coaches Choice Award in January 1990. Aided by his high rushing statistics, Gales averaged 14.4 points per game during his career. He led Division III as a senior in both rushing (2,035 yards) and points (166). With Gales leading the way, Simpson led the nation in total offense (5,140 yards). Entering the 2017 season, Gales still holds the reocrd for most consecutive 200 yard games, rattling off eight to close the 1989 season. In what turned out to be his final collegiate game, Gales rushed for 389 yards in a 42-35 loss to St. John’s (Minn.) in the first round of the 1989 NCAA Division III playoffs. At the time, the yardage broke the record in all three NCAA Divisions, but did not count as an official NCAA record since it came during the playoffs. Gales owns the school record for rushing yards in a season and is second in career rushing yards despite playing just two seasons. He was named first team All-Conference in 1989 and became the first Simpson player to be named Iowa Conference MVP. He led the Simpson offense to IIAC records for most yards per game (528.5) and total offense (788, set against William Penn Sept. 23, 1989). Upon the conclusion of his career, Gales became the only football player in the history of the Simpson program to have his number retired. His jersey continues to hang in the hallway of the Cowles Athletic Complex, honoring his unparalleled accomplishments on the Simpson gridiron. Gales was inducted into Simpson’s Hall of Fame in 2004.

THE STORM

FACILITIES Steven Johnson Fitness Center The Steven Johnson Fitness Center opened to the Simpson community in January 2014, creating a first-class, comprehensive fitness complex located at the heart of campus. The $6 million project is highlighted by a two-tier workout facility consisting of a 5,500 square foot strength and conditioning center and a 4,500-square foot exercise and fitness center. The picturesque facility overlooks Buxton Stadium. In addition to the Fitness Center, the renovation included additional classroom and meeting space, administrative and academic suites, an expanded wrestling room, a cheer, dance and multipurpose room, a new Hall of Fame display, an exercise science and athletic training lab and a Swim Ex rehabilitation and therapy pool. Buxton Stadium The home for Storm football on Saturday afternoons since 1949, Buxton Stadium was named in honor of longtime Simpson and Indianola benefactor, William Buxton III ‘28 in 1998. The stadium was previously named Neff Field after L.N. Neff. The centerpiece of Simpson’s campus, the stadium seats 5,000 fans and features state-of-the-art playing surfaces. The track and turf inside the stadium were installed in the summer of 2011 and are unlike any other in the Midwest. The football field sports a FieldTurf Revolution playing surface, designed to be the highest performing and most innovative turf in the industry.
