FOREWORD

A VERY

S C I L LY WELCOME!

By Kate Humble, TV Presenter, Writer, Dog Lover

F

or years I had been hearing how wonderful the Isles of Scilly are, in a way that was almost off-putting. Nowhere, I thought, could possibly live up to the billing that this little group of islands were regularly given by friends and colleagues. “Kate,” they would say, “it is just your sort of place. Beautiful, rugged, wild. The lightʼs amazing, huge skies, blue sea, beaches that could be in the Caribbean. Itʼs like another world! Itʼs hard to believe they are just off the Cornish coast.” So finally I conceded that I needed to go and see this so-called paradise for myself. I went with my husband and, as the islands claim to be very dog friendly, our three dogs came too. And do you know what? Everything Iʼd been told turned out to be true. But what I didnʼt appreciate until I got there is that each island has its own character and personality, its own unique charm. Nor did I know how astonishingly welcome visitors (human and canine) are made to feel; that old fashioned things like excellent service, courtesy and chatting to people youʼve never met before are the norm on Scilly. Iʼd been told to expect good food, and my goodness it was, but not just in renowned restaurants. In pubs, little cafes and pop-up stalls we ate like kings, our appetites sharpened by miles and miles of spectacular walking. And the other thing we discovered is that it seems impossible to visit this little piece of paradise just the once. Almost everyone we met had been returning to the islands year after year for most of their lives. And now I know why.

Kate Humble is a TV presenter best known for Springwatch, Autumnwatch, Wild Things and Lambing Live. She is also a travel writer and author of several books. She lives on a smallholding in rural Wales with husband Ludo, her beloved dogs and various other farm animals. 1

The Isles of Scilly are full of wonderful characters; islanders with family ties that go back generations. To each of them, Scilly holds a particular lure, and each has a story to tell‌ See #myScilly stories throughout and view more online at visitislesofscilly.com

ISLAND GUIDE

2018

FIND your PERFECT island

Few, if any, places in England can conjure up the same sense of pure chilled-out pleasure as the Isles of Scilly.

J

ust 28 miles off the coast of Land’s End, lies a beguiling, remote archipelago a world away from the rest of England; islands that offer unmatched escape and true simplicity of life. Where the only decision to be made is which islands to explore. Will it be St. Mary’s or Tresco? Or perhaps St. Martin’s, Bryher or St. Agnes? Will you step ashore on the once inhabited islets of Samson, Teän or St. Helen’s? Or discover the Eastern Isles or Bishop Rock? The Isles of Scilly are a compact cluster of 140 or so low-lying islands, the largest measuring three by two miles; the smallest no bigger than a rock – and all within a short boat ride of each other. The population is tiny too – just 2,200 in all – a hamlet of folk spread across five inhabited islands. This hardy bunch go back generations – their stories of how they have carved a livelihood from farming and the surrounding ocean – and of shipwrecks and high seas – tell of a rich yet isolated life on the very edge of England. It is this remoteness, this sense of how life once was; this sense of escape and simple pleasures that give these islands their sense of magic. The Isles of Scilly: like nowhere else in England. 7

ISLAND GUIDE

2018

Take a step back in time and explore beautiful St. Mary’s, the largest island in the archipelago.

W

hether you arrive by ferry or flight, your very first taste of Scilly will be St. Mary’s, all 2.5 square miles of it! Its capital, Hugh Town – with its charming museum, cafes, shops and galleries – is no bigger than a tiny mainland village and rush hour is when visitors flock to the quayside to catch the inter-island boats. Yet stray just a pebble’s throw from the hub and you’ll be transported to a world away, from years gone by. Experience an easy pace of life, where children can still roam free, artists abound and where nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts can truly appreciate the islands’ outstanding natural beauty. Head to the top of Buzza Hill, pause at Peninnis Lighthouse, seek out the sub-tropical serenity of Carreg Dhu garden and discover the Iron Age burial chamber at Bant’s Carn and the ancient settlement at Halangy Down. Gaze at the unusual ‘loaded camel’ rock on Porth Hellick. Feel the sand between your toes on Pelistry Bay, and clamber over to Toll’s Island at low tide for a real Swallows & Amazons adventure. Or tread the boards and seek the hides along the Lower and Higher Moors nature trails. However you choose to see the sights of St. Mary’s, its history and heritage is impressed into every cranny of the landscape. Take in

Scented Narcissi are grown and exported far and wide throughout the winter months. Scilly is home to the world’s smallest football league, comprising just two teams. The Woolpack Wanderers and Garrison Gunners play each other every Sunday between October and May. SECRET SPOTS Follow your nose for adventure to reach the Garrison headland, not via its stunning Gate built in 1742, but through Sally Port, a low passageway hidden within the heavily fortified walls, designed to defend against surprise attacks. A WRECK REMEMBERED The original Schiller Shelter on Porthcressa was built and named after the German ocean-going liner SS Schiller that was wrecked off Scilly in 1875 with the loss of 335 lives. ISLAND GUIDE

Lose yourself in Tresco’s sub-tropical sophistication – a perfect island escape with a lick of luxury.

T

resco, Scilly’s second largest island, is renowned for its world-class Abbey Garden – and rightly so. Tresco Abbey Garden is a botanical paradise planted amidst the ruins of a Benedictine priory. Its incredible 20,000 plant species have been collected from as far and wide as New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and South America, and many of them can’t survive anywhere else in the UK. Red squirrels were introduced to the garden in 2013, and it’s also home to the fascinating Valhalla museum – a collection of figureheads compiled from shipwrecks around the islands. However, the gardens aren’t the only attraction with international acclaim: Tresco’s Pentle Bay and Appletree Bay jostle for attention amongst the world’s best beaches, and the migratory birds that flock to Great Pool attract ornithologists from all over the globe. The island is well endowed with heritage, too: discover a Bronze Age tomb on Tregarthen Hill, climb to the top of Cromwell’s Castle that guards the channel between Tresco and Bryher, and explore King Charles Castle and the Blockhouse at Old Grimsby. A magnet for gastronomes, the island is famous for the quality of the beef reared on its farmland, while the wonderful Tresco Stores is often referred to as ‘Fortnum’s on Sea’. visitislesofscilly.com

EXPLORE THE NORTH Head north and discover Tresco’s rugged side around the coast to Castle Down. Enjoy fantastic views of Round Island, Teän, St. Helen’s and Bryher. Explore the beautiful lichen flora and discover castle remains dating back to the English Civil War. PICNIC AT APPLETREE BAY You’ll be hard pushed to find a finer beach than Appletree Bay on Tresco, itʼs an absolute joy and so often you can enjoy its beauty unspoilt by anyone else. Treat yourself to some deli delights from Tresco Stores and head across the dunes for a truly special picnic. 15

The spirit of Tresco WHERE DID THE BOUNTY GO? Piper’s Hole is a deep cavern situated at the north end of Tresco, reached only by scrambling down a cliff at the foot of Tregarthen’s Hill. Once a famous smugglers’ haunt, the small entrance widens to reveal a fresh water pool and a small gravel beach. LOW TIDE MINI FESTIVAL Head for the sand bar in the midst of the channel between Bryher and Tresco at low spring tides for live music, gin and Prosecco bars, Tresco salt beef baps and Island Fish paella. What’s not to love? ABBEY’S FOUNDING FATHER Tresco Abbey was built alongside the ruins of an old Benedictine priory by Augustus John Smith, after he acquired a lease for the islands from the Duchy of Cornwall in 1834. SEA PLANE PATROLS The Flying Boat Club Bistro & Bar at New Grimsby was once the site of RNAS Tresco. Seaplanes would patrol the archipelago’s western approaches between 1917 and 1919, providing an escort for convoys and spotting U-boats. BIRDS IN PARADISE Walk the length of Tresco’s fresh water pools and discover a wealth of wonderful birds such as dunlins, plovers and ducks; razorbills, guillemots and cormorants. ARTISTIC LIBERTIES It’s not just Gallery Tresco that showcases leading lights; around every corner of Tresco, you’ll find the island alive with commissioned works, art installations and sculptures from inspired artists in residence. visitislesofscilly.com

With its cosy snug, light and airy bistro and suntrap courtyard, The Flying Boat is ideal for a late breakfast, midmorning coffee, locallysourced lunch, afternoon cocktail or special evening out.

An island of contrast – of rugged cliffs and glassy coves – and an inspiration to creative souls.

A

t just one and a half miles long by half a mile wide, Bryher competes with St. Agnes for the accolade of Scilly’s smallest inhabited island, yet it packs an amazing amount of diversity into its petite form. There’s plenty to seduce you with its diversity and unique charm. Take a walk on the wild side and stormwatch atop the granite stacks of Shipman Head. Or experience the serenity on the southern shore with its shell-strewn beaches lapped by turquoise waters. It’s easy to circumnavigate the entire coastline via Bryher’s seven hills – none of which rises above 150 feet – in a matter of hours. You don’t have to be a creative type for this wild little island to captivate your senses. Yet countless artists have committed the scenery to canvas, while Michael Morpurgo and Sam Llewellyn are amongst the authors who’ve penned Bryher into their novels. Immerse yourself in a chic coastal lifestyle at the award-winning Hell Bay Hotel, book into one of the wonderful self-catering cottages or sea-side B&Bs or indulge in the more elemental pleasures with a few nights under the stars at the island’s campsite. Enjoy too, an abundance of island produce – from lobster dogs, tattie cake and Bryher bangers, to fresh veg and fudge, and crab shack delights. visitislesofscilly.com

The spirit of Bryher CROSSING THE CHANNEL Time your visit right and the tides are so extreme that you can walk across the channel at low tide to neighbouring Tresco. WHY DID THE WHALES COME? Get lost in the beauty and spirit of Bryher by (re) reading the enchanting “Why the Whales Came” by Michael Morpurgo. The 1988 film adaptation, filmed on Bryher, starred Helen Mirren, David Suchet and a wealth of local children. WHAT’S IN A NAME? Despite its tiny size, Bryher boasts seven hills; the highest measuring just 42 metres tall and derives its name from the Cornish word Breyer, meaning “place of hills”. CHALLENGE ANNEKA Bryher’s Bar Quay was first built by volunteers in 1990 for the television programme, “Challenge Anneka” with Anneka Rice. It gave Bryher folk a much needed low tide access point and is fondly referred to as Anna Quay. CAST AWAY ON A KAYAK While away a few hours on a kayak, dinghy or stand-up paddleboard in the sheltered sand flats of Green Bay. Or wade out at low tide for a spot of shrimping and starfish gazing. THE WILDEST SUNSET ON SCILLY Proffering breath-taking views and arguably the finest sunsets on Scilly, Watch Hill is the highest point on Bryher and home to an old pilot lookout, once manned for spotting ships on the horizon. visitislesofscilly.com

elcome to St. Agnes. Beauty and isolation are behind the independent spirit of this wild little island where you can discover stunning coves and contemporary cuisine juxtaposed with Bronze Age burial sites and barren heathland. Beyond the shores of St. Agnes lies nothing but shipwrecks, seabird colonies, rugged islets and 3,000 miles of Atlantic Ocean. The only one of the inhabited isles to be separated from the rest of the islands by a deepwater channel, St. Agnes is connected to the diminutive island of Gugh by a sand bar that is accessible only at low tide. Amble barefoot across ‘The Bar’ before the tide floods in and for a few hours you’ll be castaway on Gugh with only wildlife, the Bronze Age Obadiah’s Barrow and the nine-foot-tall ‘Old Man’ standing stone for company. A magnet for wildlife, St. Agnes is also the location where storm petrels and Manx shearwater chicks have bred for the first time on Scilly in living memory – thanks to the highly successful Seabird Recovery Project. And gin! Westward Farm began making infused gins a year ago using island grown botanicals. Together with Troytown Farm, which produces magnificent ice-creams and dairy delights, St. Agnes serves up very distinctive flavours of fine local island produce. visitislesofscilly.com

If the area of Gugh is included with St. Agnes, then Bryher would receive the accolade. ICONIC LIGHTHOUSE St. Agnes’ most iconic landmark is the tower of the decommissioned lighthouse, built in 1680. Now a private home, it served the islands, in particular the Western Rock approaches until 1911 when it was superceded by Peninnis lighthouse on St. Mary’s. ISLAND PIPER Listen out for St. Agnes’ Rough Island Band: four guys led by a piper who make original contemporary folk music that reflects this rugged little island’s extraordinary landscape, history and Scilly tales. CREATIVITY ABOUNDS St. Agnes is renowned for its independent spirit and creative soul. Today it is home to artists, sculptors, weavers, basket makers and musicians – all drawing inspiration from land and sea. BURIAL FIELDS Stand on St. Agnes’ green (the cricket pitch) and imagine yourself in October 1707 when four Royal Navy warships carrying 1,550 men were shipwrecked after striking the Western Rocks. Many of those lost at sea that night are said to be buried here.

T

here aren’t many places in the world where you can dive a shipwreck in cutglass-clear water, stroll along a postcardperfect beach without another soul in sight and feast on freshly-landed lobster in the space of a single day. But then again, there aren’t many places in the world like the Isles of Scilly – and there’s certainly nowhere like them in the rest of England. Unique is an overused word but, by combining the exotic with the familiar to such bewitching effect, this Gulf Stream-washed archipelago earns the designation. For this is a place of short yet swashbuckling voyages across blue-green, shoulder-deep water; of morning hikes and evening strolls set to a soundtrack of duelling songbirds; of small (on paper) adventures by foot, bike and boat that deliver big, soul-lifting rewards. Most of all though, it’s a place that never fails to stir the heart. Here are a few suggestions for a weekend to remember:

he archipelago is simply made for exploration by kayak, whether you’re a novice or a veteran. St. Mary’s, Bryher, Tresco and St. Martin’s enclose a calm central lagoon, whose rim abounds with sheltered bays and tranquil inlets for those who prefer drinking in the scenery rather than battling against the currents; more experienced paddlers, meanwhile, can test their mettle against the Atlantic as it swirls around the cliffs, reefs and islets exposed to the ocean.

he turquoise seas might look like the Caribbean at times, but appearances can be deceptive: the water temperature ranges from a bracing 10°C in winter to a still chilly 17°C in summer. Don’t let that put you off a dip, though – a wild swim here, in some of the clearest water in the British Isles, is worth every single goosebump, with a huge variety of shorehugging and island-to-island routes possible. 31

REMAINS TO BE SEEN The Isles of Scilly hold the greatest density of archaeological sites anywhere in Britain and English Heritage has identified almost 300 sites as Scheduled Ancient Monuments.

ISOLATED ISLES, BUT NO BACKWATER he Isles of Scilly are a treasure trove, not just because of the salvaged shipwreck bounty. The treasure lies in the long, social history; the traditions and customs of a community interwoven with the sea and a unique archaeology, and in the interpretation of that richness through the art of today. Once a single, wooded land mass, rising seas created these granite isles, obscuring shallow rock reefs and sand bars which once acted as walkways between islands millennia ago. At one point, Scilly was said to be connected to the mainland; the Arthurian myth of the submarine city of Lyonesse lives on. But, today it’s cut off, isolated, remote. Yet, since the first settlers, these ancient isles have proved to be nothing short of significant. Remains of early Christian chapels still exist on the islands, and the earliest settlers left the greatest density of archaeological sites anywhere in Britian. At the Benedictine Abbey founded on Tresco in 964AD, wine jug fragments evidence early trading of Scilly wool for French wine, according to 87-year-old local historian and author, Richard Larn, OBE. What remains today is the Priory of St. Nicholas, built around 50 years later. visitislesofscilly.com

Or attend his fascinating weekly evening lecture in the Methodist Hall. Historic St. Helen’s Look out for trips to the now uninhabited island of St. Helen’s to see the ruins of the 18th Century Pest House and ancient artefacts found on the islands.

t’s Scilly’s location which makes it so significant. They lie at a junction of five international shipping routes, making them a ‘ship park’ of global repute. An ingenious and inventive island population built their lives around passing ships, which anchored in the straits between islands while awaiting the right winds, says Richard, who lives on St. Mary’s. “By the 1300s, Tresco became an important island habitation of Scilly, when shipping started to call from the continent,” he says. “It gave locals the opportunity to sell them fresh water, fresh vegetables, meat, beer, anything.” Locals also made a trade in boat repairs and pilotage (using local knowledge to navigate ships). Tudor defences, like The Old Blockhouse fortress settlement at Old Grimsby, started to protect ships anchored in Old Grimsby Roads. As ships got bigger, and threats of European invasion mounted (particularly in the wake of the Spanish Armada) the importance shifted to Tresco Channel, defended by King Charles’ Castle. Attention was then focused on St. Mary’s Roads, when Sir Francis Godolphin built Star Castle, its Garrison walls and 120 cannons (something which English Heritage describes as “one of the most remarkable and impressive coastal defence systems in England”). The Spanish threat never materialised, but the Garrison was periodically enlarged to defend the islands throughout the English Civil War and World War II. The islands also became an isolation hospital (the Pest House on St. Helen’s was built in 1764) and cholera quarantine station up to the early 19th Century, marking it as an important gateway to the UK. Most importantly for the small population, ship repairs gave way to a century-long boom in boat-building on St. Mary’s from the late 1700s. At the height of boatbuilding days, St. Mary’s had 32 inns. The population doubled. In the 1880s and 1890s, flower farming took off. Times were good. 37

TREASURE AND INVENTION FROM DISASTER ith the ships came the wrecks, almost 1,000 in all around the islands’ 100 miles of coastline. Lighthouses saved some from perishing, but treacherous seas and shallow, submerged rock reefs brought casualties in their thousands. At the start of the 18th Century (1707), four ships perished on Scilly’s rocks from Royal Navy’s HMS Association fleet. “It was the second ‘treasure ship’ found in British waters, including eight bronze canons and gold/silver coins worth around £4 million in today’s money,” says Richard, also a former Royal Navy and commercial diver who salvaged the sunken fleet in the 1960s. “It was also the second worst tragedy in Royal Navy history,” he adds. More than 1,450 bodies washed ashore for weeks to come, including that of Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell.

REAL VICTORIAN HEROES ne of the first things you notice in the Isles of Scilly are the lighthouses. Six of them, if you count Wolf Rock, guard the islands from every approach. Most were built by three generations of the Douglass family in the 19th Century, who permanently lived on-site. “They never lost a man, which, when you think about what they were doing — moving three-tonne blocks of concrete with nothing but manpower — is just incredible,” says Jess Vian, Scilly lighthouse enthusiast and Isles of Scilly Museum trustee. “They could do it because no-one told them they couldn’t. They were phenomenal engineers and extremely brave men who could turn their hand to anything. They could draft plans and build, they could sail, row, and they would jump into the sea to rescue anyone if they got swept away. They were real Victorian heroes.”

A FAMILY AFFAIR During the 1800s, the Douglass family built Bishop Rock, Round Island and Wolf Rock (plus Longstone, off the Northumbrian coast, and Eddystone in Plymouth). The builders would stay on as staff because of a regular salary and pension, but endured rough, damp conditions in exposed stone buildings, occasionally being forced to live on limpets and puffins. Lead engineer, James Douglass, was a cultured academic and musician. The first of Scilly’s lighthouses was built in 1680, the last one 1911.

ISLAND EXPERIENCE Gig Champs weekend Make a date with the World Pilot Gig Championships that take place on Scilly every early May Bank Holiday weekend. n Periglis Church on St. Agnes, strained eyes stare at you from a glass window depicting two gigs racing towards a sinking ship. The faces are of real people from the islands. It’s a scene typical of the 1800s, when gigs were the original lifeboats and pilot boats. The window inscription reads: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you”. But it’s gig rowing, not religion, which ties the present to the past here. In a stone shed near the quay rests one of the original pilot gigs. Although almost 150 years old, she’s no museum piece – the Shah is raced every week. “It’s more than just a sport, it’s a ritual,” says Piers Lewin, one of St. Agnes’ 80-plus residents. “It’s been an unbroken tradition for centuries.” Another gig almost fills the lower ground floor of the Isles of Scilly Museum on St. Mary’s. The 140-yearold gig, Klondyke, is surrounded by stuffed birds, artwork and social history. Upstairs, the salvaged spoils of shipwrecks merge with tales of wartime, archaeology and maritime history. And everywhere the island narrative is told through historical photographs from the nationally-acclaimed Gibson family.

Patrick Trevellick, Albion Coxswain

HEROIC RESCUE OVER LAND AND SEA Strong winds prevented the crew of Albion gig on Bryher from launching on the Western shore to aid steam ship SS Delaware in 1871. So they carried the half-tonne gig for half a mile overland, rowed to Samson, then carried it over land again before rowing to rescue passengers.

Their plight was recognised by Augustus Smith, the self-declared Lord Proprietor, known by some as a saviour; to others a tyrant. Regardless, from his arrival in the 1830s, he brought law and order, built schools, churches, roads, houses and developed the land for flower farming, after buying the lease from the Duchy of Cornwall. ninterrupted family lines go way back. The same surnames appear again and again – Hicks, Pender, Woodcock and Banfield – to name a few. In Periglis Church on St. Agnes, plaques record the lives lost at sea, and those awarded for their bravery. Today, there’s a 50/50 split between Scillonians (those that were born here), and Islanders (those that weren’t). Throughout its history, new blood has enriched the islands’ culture, merging with its indigenous population to create an adaptable, resilient and creative community. One that is resourceful and independent, and like nowhere else on the planet.

s well as making the perfect habitat for wildlife species, it was Scilly’s temperate climate which led to a boom in flower farming. Yet this industry has suffered a sharp decline in recent decades. And, once again, the resourcefulness of these people shines through. A once-flourishing flower business, Westward Farm, run by Mike Hicks, has diversified into essential oils, soap, gin, fruit juice, vegetables, eggs, and holiday accommodation. His brother, Tim, transformed Troytown Farm into a dairy. Other flower farms have moved into mail order. Fresh, local food is as abundant as the wildlife and art, from farmed produce to wild, foraged ingredients, making the islands a sought-after foodie destination. Holiday accommodation took off in the 1950s, when landlord, the Duchy of Cornwall, sold off rented properties in Hugh Town, St. Mary’s. In the same decade, St. Mary’s Boatmen’s Association streamlined “tripper” boats, which run alongside boats run by offisland skippers. Tripper boats are the lifeline of the islands for everyone. Today, tourism booms, making up 90% of Scilly’s income, the diminished flower trade accounting for only around 10%. 43

INSPIRING ISLANDS

S

cilly is alive with makeshift shops, galleries and studios. The islands are home to every conceivable type of artist: bookmaker, basket-maker, ceramicist and glass artist; poet, painter, potter; seamstress, silversmith, textile artist and weaver. Maritime-inspired and recycled art is everywhere, reflecting the people, their customs and cultural heritage. As well as resident artists, Scilly has inspired world-famous writers like Sam Llewellyn and Simon Armitage OBE, their words reaching far across the globe. And Bryher will forever be remembered as the setting for Michael Morpurgo’s 1985 book, Why the Whales Came and the subsequent 1989 film adaptation which was filmed here, on Scilly’s most north westerly island. Art here blends naturally with the landscape, which draws thousands to the islands, and inspires so many. For some artists, inspiration comes from the light reflected off the silver mica sand through turquoise waters. For others it’s the human history, wildlife, the rugged landscape and the soundscapes of an archipelago unpolluted by noise and light. Some love Scilly for its art. For others, it’s the wildlife. There are a good number of Sites of Special Scientific Interest across Scilly, which is, in its entirety, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is dotted with Marine Conservation Zones, and some habitats and species are covered by Special Areas of Conservation (grey seals) and Special Protection Areas (including Storm petrels and Lesser Black-backed Gulls). The islands’ clear waters support a plethora of marine life, from coral to visiting dolphins. The temperate climate of Scilly, along with its winds and oceanic current, bring migrant bird species from every direction, providing them with a rich feeding ground. The magnitude of their importance was demonstrated in 2013 with the Seabird Recovery Project: a four-year, £700,000 conservation project to eradicate brown rats from St. Agnes to protect Manx shearwaters and storm petrels. visitislesofscilly.com

ISLAND EXPERIENCE Music by candlelight Spend a Friday evening in the candlelit Old Town Church listening to a recital given by local musicians, Duo Prospero. Their beautiful music and the atmospheric location are enchanting. Get arty Enjoy the myriad galleries and artists’ studios you’ll find across all the islands and if you’re feeling inspired, why not have a go yourself? Many of the artists host weekly workshops to showcase their media, particularly during Art Scilly Week, which takes place every May. Immerse yourself in acoustic sessions or plan your trip around the annual Scilly Folk Festival that takes place over Whitsun weekend.

WHALES ARE HERE Walk in the footsteps of Michael Morpurgo on Bryher and imagine how he was inspired to write Why the Whales Came. Look out for local screenings of the film adaptation, which was famously filmed here on the islands.

“Scilly has given me everything and enabled me to fulfil every part of my life. You do make sacrifices living on an island but these are easily outweighed by the luxury of living here. The natural environment, the clarity of light and the water – there’s no lack of inspiration.” Piers Lewin, musician, English scholar and chef

“I’m inspired first by Scilly’s wildlife and natural beauty, including the weather in all its states and the soundscape; it’s an incredibly pristine aural environment. And secondly, by the extraordinary culture and social history of a community that’s lived here since the Bronze Age – it’s all around us. And I’m also inspired by the loyal fan base of visitors obsessed with the islands and who want to feel a sense of belonging. For an artist, that gives you a reason to create.” 45

hipwrecks create another livelihood, of sorts, for people on Scilly. “Scillonians have always relied on what the sea brings in to build their houses and so on,” says Piers Lewin, a St. Agnes musician. “It’s hard to get stuff and to get rid of stuff; you recycle, keep or swap everything.” Emma Eberlein, artist and shop/gallery owner on St. Agnes, says: “When there’s a storm, it’s like Christmas.” Emma curates an eclectic collection of recycled, beachcombed art in Pot Buoys Gallery. Everywhere, things are reborn: a cable drum is a table, an old shop roof is a wall, sea plastic becomes a bracelet, and Action Men figures’ clothing becomes art behind glass. “The display cabinet is made from mahogany doors from the stricken cargo ship, Cita, which sank off Scilly in the 1990s,” she recollects. “She was full of computer mice, doors, tyres, fridge magnets — everything the world transports to and fro, washed up on the seashore. It’s a symbol of modern Western society.” On St. Mary’s and all the ‘off-islands’ (every inhabited island but St. Mary’s), beachcombing is a thing; even the visitors do it. “It appeals to that hunter-gatherer nature,” says glass artist, Oriel Hicks. “At low tide on Town Beach you’ll see people with their heads down, looking for sea glass, beach pottery, plastic, buttons, anything. There’s something addictive about it. And, if you find more cowrie shells (old currency) than anyone else, that’s a victory.” visitislesofscilly.com

I imagine my ancestors walking the same paths and beaches as me; Scilly is where my heart is. Scilly is home.”

DID YOU KNOW? It is estimated that by the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish; but we can stop this from happening. Porth Killier on St. Agnes

hereʼs nothing better than pulling on a pair of walking shoes, grabbing your ruck sack and putting your best feet forward on the Isles of Scilly. Truly amazing views wherever “The time of year tends to you look, swathes of wonderful flora and fauna, determine my favourite uninhabited islands largely untouched and walks; the southern coastline of St. Mary’s historic remnants to explore. Plus myriad birds in spring is superb for swooping and singing, endless empty beaches swallows; in autumn I to stroll and rolling Atlantic waves to watch on head for the sheltered nature trails. But my the exposed western rocks. Scilly is like nowhere else in England and all-time favourite spot is on St. Agnes, around youʼd be hard pushed to breathe air thatʼs any Porth Killier and by the purer. Coupled with the fact that itʼs easy to Big Pool, where the fields walk a different island a day, or smaller ones in and hedgerows meet the just a few hours, what’s not to love about this coastline and beaches. And the wading birds, of natural paradise? course! The walk up over Resident walking guides, naturalists and the rise and the views it ornithologists offer guided walks across Scilly yields are fantastic.” throughout the season – a brilliant opportunity Will Wagstaff is an to appreciate island life at its finest. Here’s ornithologist and what some of them have to say about their naturalist and runs Island Wildlife Tours favourite spots.

CHAS WOOD

Pentle Bay to Block House Point “Heading north from Pentle Bay on Tresco up towards Rushy Porth and Block House Point is the best coastal walk on Scilly – particularly when the sun is shining and the tide is low. The white sand and the colours of the sea – from turquoise to royal blue – deliver the ‘wow’ factor in spades as does the look out towards Teän, Round Island, Men-a-vaur, St. Helen’s, Norwethal and St. Martin’s. You’d struggle to beat this spot anywhere in the world.” Chas Wood of Scilly Walks leads tours including local archaeology, birds, and flowers 59

BOB DAWSON

In search of Orange Birdsfoot “At the eastern end of St. Martin’s, across Chapel Down and the dunes, there is a really nice mix of wildlife, scenery and elevation. Even better is that you can nearly always enjoy it all to yourself. Some years ago, I discovered a very rare plant, Orange Birdsfoot as well as the Red-barbed (or St. Martin’s) ant close to Brandy Point. I often head back to the spot to check how they are getting along.” Bob Dawson is a naturalist, with particular expertise in birds, bees and butterflies – and spiders!

JACLYN PEARSON

Unbridled, historic Garrison

“When I first arrived on the islands as an Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust volunteer, I was based at the Woolpack bunker on The Garrison. Every morning, I would awaken to views of St. Agnes and Bishop Rock lighthouse, and watch the gannets and gulls frolic across the water. The headland holds so much history too. It’s wonderful to walk its walls and be reminded of the threats of invasion all those years ago.” Jaclyn Pearson led the Seabird Recovery Project on the Isles of Scilly

CHRIS POTTERTON

Owls hunting at dusk on Bryher

“Nothing beats winter time at dusk and walking home from work on Bryher. It’s just 10 or 15 minutes from the water meadow down Shipman Head Lane and across the fields to my home at Bar. I don’t see another soul except owls. I love to stop and watch these amazing creatures hunt for shrews and rats. The light is perfect at this time of the day, and it’s so quiet and peaceful, even if it’s blowing a gale.” Chris Potterton is a walking guide and water technician

You’ll always find a friendly face on the quay, or a local in one of the cosy pubs who’ll be happy to chat. Just follow your nose and take in the white-sand beaches, historic sites and untamed landscapes. Each island can be easily walked, top to toe, in a few hours. How St. Agnes island gin is gaining nationwide recognition

M

"CRABS AND LOBSTERS ABOUND AS WELL AS BOXES OF IRIDESCENT MACKEREL, SO FRESH THEY SHINE AS BLUE AS THE WATERS FROM WHERE THEY’VE BEEN CAUGHT" Andy Forster, Cornwall Living

y family has been running Westward Farm since the 1700s – indeed the youngest son of the youngest son has taken it on for the last seven generations! I think it’s because the older children traditionally went off to war or left to be pilots or lighthouse keepers, leaving the youngest to help out at home. When potatoes and flowers became less viable, my parents, like all farmers on Scilly, were forced to diversify. My mum has always loved essential oils, and took the plunge to grow them on St. Agnes to use in soaps and beauty products. In fact it was mum’s chance comment last year – that her rose geranium would be amazing in gin – that led me to research what might be possible and the rest, well, it’s history! Our Scilly gin uses a classic mixture of fine botanicals and water distilled from our own bore hole. We then flavour our other gins with chamomile and elderberry, rose geranium, honey, even gorse – all grown on Westward Farm. 65

fter 14 years of family holidays on Scilly and a yearning to relocate forever, a chance glance in Farmers’ Weekly gave Graham and Ruth Eggins, and their children, the perfect opportunity – to run Hillside Farm. “I come from a Devon family of tenant farmers but to have 40 acres of my own on Bryher, plus 140 more to graze, and to be self-sufficient is a dream come true. We keep Saddleback pigs, Red Ruby cows, 220 laying hens, honey bees and a couple of ponies. We also grow our own vegetables, adding new varieties every year including the sweetest (and secret variety of) strawberries, other soft fruits and asparagus. “Everything we grow and produce we sell directly from our farm gate and any surplus is snapped up here on Bryher by Hell Bay hotel or across the water on Tresco. “Most mornings we’re up at 4am but it’s not hard work when you love what you do.”

Producing sea salt inspired by 18th Century methods

L

ike all teenagers, I left the islands at 16 to continue my education. But after several expeditions far and wide, I was determined to return to St. Martin’s and help run the family farm. Diversification was the crux to making it work. Inspiration arrived in the form of Scilly’s fantastic natural environment – our crystal clear sea water, the purest of sea air and warm sunshine – all the raw materials required, and a book I found on the internet by Willian Brownrigg, written in 1748, entitled “The art of making common salt – as now practised in most parts of the world”. Experiments ensued in 2009, followed soon after with our first batch of SC Salt. It’s produced and packaged authentically, by hand. Sea water is pumped from the sea, it’s course filtered and then solar evaporated in open salt pans in polytunnels right by the shore. Our island location and traditional methods make it special.

y love of fishing began as a child. Like most Scillonians back then, my grandparents earned a living from farming and fishing. When I was young, my father began to operate a passenger boat business on the islands. He was busy most days, so my granddad would take me out to check his pots for lobsters, crabs and crayfish, and put down lines for pollack and mackerel – whatever was out there. I loved fishing then and I love it now. I joined a commercial crew as soon as I left school, then took a short break before buying my own boats and pots about eight years ago. Now, amongst others, I supply our family-run café at Longstone. Nothing beats the outdoor lifestyle and the open water, heading out towards the Western Rocks at 5am on a summer’s morning to haul up my pots, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the solitude. I couldn’t live any other way.

y father was a real foodie and my inspiration, and as a youngster I helped out at my aunt and uncle’s hotel in Devon. Hospitality and catering is in my DNA. I am passionate about great tasting food and I love meeting people; the same goes for my wife and business partner, Lindsay. Our premise for setting up Tanglewood Kitchen in 2011 was to offer quality ready meals and luxury picnic fillers to holiday makers on Scilly, alongside outside catering, private events and chef at home experiences. The Tanglewood Table was then created in 2016; an intimate dining experience set in the Post Office with an ever-changing menu of locallysourced food all freshly prepared. Our stunning surroundings are a fantastic backdrop for local produce – from the sea as well as the land. It’s great to be able to use quality seasonal fare from the islands when we can. The shellfish, in particular, is second to none. visitislesofscilly.com

ISLAND GARDEN Gardens are an inescapable part of the Isles of Scilly. From colourful hedgerows, lovingly cultivated private gardens and the magnificent Tresco Abbey Garden to the wilder, living garden that blankets the islands year round, they all juxtapose and jostle for the attention they undoubtedly deserve!

T

urn any corner on a walk on the Isles of Scilly, at any time of year, and the colours there to greet you – in the winter flower fields, along the vibrant hedgerows, amongst the subtle heathlands, beside the coastal shores or in manicured residents’ gardens – are simply superb. The entire archipelago is a garden in one and a kaleidoscope of colour with horticulture, husbandry and natural flora happily living side by side. Whilst this is to some extent true, the balance between nature and artifice is delicate, complex, and ever changing and stretches back in time as long as humankind has inhabited these isles. Indeed, a flick through old photographs from just a generation ago reveals a very different landscape on Scilly to one we’re used to seeing today. The beloved cobalt-blue and white agapanthus found in gardens and hedgerows are native to New Zealand, as are the swathes of pittosporum hedges that line and protect the fields of dainty white and yellow narcissi.

Aeoniums originally came from the Canary Islands and Africa and, of course, Tresco Abbey Garden boasts some 20,000 plants and flora from all around the world. But don’t let this detract or distract; it’s because of the Isles of Scilly’s fantastic warm, maritime climate and natural environment that these immigrant sub-tropical plants and flowers now thrive alongside native species – and it’s what gives visitors and residents so much to indulge in and enjoy alongside the wilder marram grass, elms, pink sea thrift and tiny eyebrights. The relationship between the people of Scilly and gardens on the islands is perhaps most obvious

“The most breathtaking ‘garden’ is to be found in the islands’ wild spaces.” 71

“The balance between nature and artifice is delicate” in the community-led and most peaceful of spots – Carreg Dhu garden (pronounced ‘crick dhu’ locally, and meaning Black Rocks in Kernewek, the ancient Cornish language). Spearheaded by June Lethbridge and her husband, Richard, this disused quarry was turned into a beautiful, sheltered garden by, and for, Scillonians. Carreg Dhu was created in 1986 with donations from birdwatchers, plants and shrubs sent from the Abbey Garden, and a grant from the Council of the Isles of Scilly. It has been a labour of love for June and friends – tending to the agapanthus, belladonna lilies, echiums, fuchsias, camellias, daffodils and geraniums etc. over the years. Carreg Dhu has become a place “that is loved by the community, cared for by the community and is allowed to thrive by the community,” she says. Anyone is welcome to help maintain the garden and thanks to the greenfingered volunteers who do pitch in, it has become not only a place of immense relaxation on St. Mary’s, but also a space that the whole community can use and enjoy. While Carreg Dhu is small and understated, it is Tresco Abbey Garden that is undoubtedly the largest gem in Scilly’s crown. Horticultural enthusiasts from around the world arrive to walk the cultivated terraces and marvel at the impressive collection visitislesofscilly.com

of sub-tropical plants that bask in the warmer climate of the archipelago. And away from the 20,000 or heavenly species that this walled sanctuary harbours, you can also discover the acre and a half that is the kitchen garden. This garden thrives with just two polytunnels, and once provided produce solely for the owners of Tresco Estate – the Dorrien-Smiths. However, the garden is so abundant that Emma Lainchbury, the Head Kitchen Gardener, can now supply some of Tresco’s restaurants. “I talk to the chefs about seasonality and discuss menus around what the kitchen garden can grow and when,” Emma explains. “We’re very lucky, though, to be able to supply fruit and veg for most of the year because the islands have much longer and more fruitful growing seasons, and I love the fact that visitors to Tresco’s eateries can enjoy produce grown in my garden!” But for all the wonderful experiences found in curated gardens across Scilly, perhaps the most breath-taking ‘garden’ is to be found in the islands’ wild, natural spaces – a living garden of wild flowers across the rugged cliffs and heathlands. The landscape on Scilly today is the product of thousands of years of smallscale farming and agriculture – a way of life that can be traced back to Bronze Age civilisations. More recently, bigger and more exotic plants have escaped

 Hummingbird Moth, Stuart Ball

Issy Tibbs, Scilly Succulents “I was away from Bryher for 15 years but dreamt of my return every day. Now I am back, bringing up my children as I was brought up. Every day, the seasons change before your eyes and you see something different – from the first swallow to the first winter blow. It makes you love Scilly.” 73

THE ISLES OF SCILLY WILDLIFE TRUST Sheep’s bit

from cultivated gardens, and thrived and multiplied – often overshadowing the smaller, rare indigenous species that are inherent to the Scilly landscape. No organisation is more aware of the necessity to maintain the right balance between old and new, indigenous plants and otherwise, than local conservation charity, the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust. Its small team of rangers ensures that rare species such as adder’s tongue fern, sheep’s bit, and orange birds-foot survive and aren’t overrun by the likes of pittosporum, gorse and bracken. The Trust is responsible for, amongst many other things, keeping these invasive plants under control and works closely with the islands’ farmers to achieve this. Cattle are used to graze down some of the land that the Trust doesn’t have the manpower to tend to, replicating age-old agricultural practices that have now dramatically declined. Crucially, says Nikki Banfield who works for the Trust, “this creates a landscape that benefits many species instead of just a few, including the little gems of Scilly’s plant life”. So, as you step out on your coastal walks, head for the gardens or set off across the wilder heathlands to enjoy the garden of Scilly in its entirety. Throughout the winter into early spring, scented narcissi prevail, and then from March through to September the islands come alive in a riot of colour and texture. visitislesofscilly.com

GETTING AROUND THE ISLANDS One of the greatest pleasures when staying on the Isles of Scilly is to go island hopping. Whichever island you’re staying on, you can simply hop onto a “tripper” boat to explore all the others and discover each of their distinct charms. It’s a great way to get a fuller flavour of island life. All the islands are really close together – just a 15-25 minute boat ride – so it’s really easy to do a different island each day. Walking is the way to go on all the “off islands”, although on Tresco, you can hire bikes and buggies, and on all the others, you can also get around the inner coastlines on kayaks or stand-up

paddleboards. On St. Mary’s, the main island, you can also climb aboard the Community Bus, rent bikes or golf buggies, as well as go by private taxi. In the evenings, “supper boats” are laid on, allowing you to head off to another island for an evening meal, returning around sunset. Or on a Wednesday or Friday evening, why not follow the gig races that take place between dedicated crews from all the islands? Throughout the week, too, a number of tripper boats offer specialist wildlife and scenic tours across the islands. Look out on the noticeboards on the quays, or go online for all the details.

Accessible Scilly For visitors to the Isles of Scilly with limited mobility, and/or for those with young children, there are a range of services and facilities available. Most people get around the islands on foot, but if that’s not an option for you or one of your party, we recommend that you look at, and book, alternative options in advance of your holiday. You can hire pushbikes (with trailers) and golf buggies (for those aged 25-75 years; driving licences required) on St. Mary’s and Tresco. There are also a number of private hire vehicles on St. Mary’s, a Community Bus and a “Buzza Bus” on St Mary’s (for those registered to use it via Cornwall’s Age Concern).

The off-islands – Tresco, St. Martin’s, St. Agnes, Bryher – have only a mixture of concrete roads and unmade roads that are not suitable for public transport. They are only accessible by boat and getting on and off can be tricky with several steps. (The boatmen are lovely though, and will always assist where necessary.) Pushchairs and lighter standard wheelchairs can be lifted onto boats – electric wheelchairs would be a challenge. Remember when booking your flights or the passenger ferry to Scilly, as well as your accommodation, to discuss your particular requirements. Check their access statements for more detailed information, too.

St. Agnes Boating St. Agnes Boating offers scheduled and sea taxi services between St. Agnes and the other islands. Purchase your transfer or weekly pass online. Download our new boating App to view all of our trips. stagnesboating.co.uk 01720 422704

Tresco Boat Services Daily trips to explore the islands throughout the season, and year round transfers to your destination on Tresco, Bryher and St. Martin’s. Seek out birds and seals on our wildlife tours, take a trip to Bishop Rock lighthouse, or hop on a Gig spectator boat to cheer on our local crews. 01720 423373 tresco.co.uk/boats

A world apart, but not a world away…

Enjoy a family-run gourmet hotel steeped in history that exudes a friendly and professional service. There’s a warm welcome waiting for you at this excellent four-star family run hotel. The castle began life back in 1593, when it was built in the shape of an eight-pointed star, occupying magnificent views of the surrounding islands. Back then it served to protect the mainland of Britain from invaders, and today the castle, and its views are much better enjoyed over a glass of wine or two from the castle ramparts. The Star Castle Hotel sits in four lush acres of secluded sub-tropical gardens and offers a range of facilities that include an indoor heated pool and unlimited complimentary golf and tennis. There’s a choice of beautifully styled accommodation providing guests with the choice of either pretty garden rooms (many with sea views, private verandahs or gardens) or historical rooms within the castle that ooze cosy character and charm. The hotel is renowned across the islands for its fine cuisine and offers a choice of two award-winning restaurants specialising in local produce including fresh lobster and crab, collected daily from the hotels fishing boat. The Star Castle offers the perfect ingredients for a very special wedding celebration with licensed rooms, fabulous food and stunning photo opportunities. VisitEngland

Good Hotel Guide 2018 The

Editor’s Choice Award Rooms with a View Star Castle, St Mary’s

Each day begins with a sumptuous breakfast, the dungeon bar offers a light lunch option as well as a Cornish cream tea and children will love the delicious high tea that is part of the family package offered. Even dogs are welcomed and catered for at the Star Castle! Hotel owner, Robert Francis, produces a selection of fine wines from the hotel’s vineyard & winery. Not only do these excellent pinot noirs, pinot gris’, chardonnays and rosés now take pride of place on the wine list, but the vineyard itself is fast becoming one of the must-see locations on St Mary’s. The setting is spectacular and visitors can enjoy wine tastings, a glass of chilled wine and fresh lobster for lunch, or they can admire the vines and soak up the very special atmosphere of the Star Castle’s HolyVale Vineyard. The Isles of Scilly are so peaceful and picture perfect that most people visit just to wander and marvel at the tropical setting and the whitest beaches you’ll find anywhere outside of the Caribbean. But, if you feel the need to be a little bit busy, there’s a host of events and activities to take part in throughout the year. The Star Castle Hotel offers special packages to make the most of these events, such as; Walk Scilly in April and October, Island Regatta weekend in August and their very own full board packages in February and March. A great big thank you to all of the Scillonians and friends of Scilly who have modelled, written, proofread, ferried, guided, taken great photos and given permission to use others, dug deep and bent over backwards to make our beautiful guide possible. Buying local is as important as ever and our marketing, creative and production teams are all based in Scilly and Cornwall. We have tried hard to make sure the information in this guide, including the adverts, is accurate. Sorry, but the Islands’ Partnership can’t accept any liability for errors, omissions, or any inconvenience you may have been put to as a result.
