LIVE MUSICIANS

From the France come Lisa Brune BY MELISSA ISLANDERS

There are a few French artists in Second Life and Jean-Christophe Chevalier, Fran6 Parkin or Mimi Carpenter come to mind; this month, I discovered the vocalist, Lisa Brune. Lisa joined SL when she saw a TV program about SL in early 2007; however, she only began singing this year. She will soon be performing in RL and will use SL to rehearse her new compositions. I’m looking forward to hearing her music since I love to hear songs sung in French. Currently, she has a good selection of songs that she performs in English, including some from Pink Floyd - no small accomplishment but she takes it in a stride. Before she started to sing in SL, Lisa used to go to live concerts. She mentioned a few names (some new to me by the way!), including Jordan Reyne (aka Adrienne Deezul in SL), Harper Messmer, Craig Gore and also Maximillian Kleene and Twinghost Ronas. Why does Lisa sing in SL? She says it is for the emotional release. There is a true connection with her audience; the feedback is genuine and it provokes really good vibes - it’s almost a sensual feeling! When asked about her inspiration or musical taste, Lisa gave me a short list of names such as: Massive Attack, Portishead, Beth Gibbons and Martina Topley-Bird. And what about French songs? Well there is not much instrumental music, she says, but she would like to try songs from Noir Désir, Aaron, Bashung and Zazie.

Showcase Live music news...

by Sandy Demina http://showcaseliveinsecondlife.blogspot.com/

Jordan Reyne was born in New Zealand, but she just moved to London from Hamburg, where she lived for 5 years. Jordan started making music when she was a child, although she wasn’t exactly “playing” music at first: “I would bang bits of old metal and iron together and sing along to it. Eventually my parents got so annoyed with the sound of it they

sent me to get guitar lessons - I was around 8 at the time.” By age 11, she began playing in bands, “They were probably awful too,” she admits, “so I am glad I left the recording part until a few years later.” Jordan describes her style as alternative folk rock or industrial-tinged folk: in her songs she uses stories and tales from around the 1880s stories from real people - so there is definitely

a folk element, though it’s quite a bloodthirsty one, since the folk stories she writes are very “Grimm’s fairy tale-eske.” In her music you can also find a heavy industrial element - machine sounds from that time period - in the rhythms and things. Her sources of inspiration are everyday people living under extraordinary circumstances. “I gravitate to the industrial revolution, I think,

because people’s lives at the time were being turned upside down by industrialization and the invention of new machinery. “They were undergoing extreme change in terms of work, family and societal expectations. In terms of New Zealand history, too, people were coming over from the UK to start entirely new lives, so adventures were still possible for everyday folk.

That sort of thing requires a lot of bravery. What inspires me is people who are quietly brave.” I asked Jordan how she discovered Second Life and what brought her in-world. “It was actually a friend, Loreen Aldrin, who discovered SL and introduced me to it. She is a wonderful musician and a friend of mine in RL. Loreen was leaving Hamburg for a while and I went over to visit her. She was playing a show online and showed me how it worked. We took turns playing songs and it was so much fun. I couldn’t believe that there were people from all over the world there. It was a totally different experience to playing in RL. I fell in love with it straight away” Jordan uses her real name in-world, even if she actually started out with an avatar named “Adrienne Deezul,” but after just four months, she changed to JordanReyne Deezul. Jordan Reyne is her real name, and the name she uses in RL shows too. She thought about using just that name (without Deezul on the end) but Linden Labs wanted several hundred RL dollars per month to allow her to use it, so she went with Deezul as a last name for the sake of continuity. When Jordan is not playing online, she’s usually playing in RL, so she does not have much time to do other things in SL. When she started though, she used to go to a lot of concerts in order to try and get the hang of how things worked and what was possible. “I really enjoy seeing other musicians in-world,” she says. “Some of my favorite musicians play online and I would never be able to see them in RL because they live so far away. It’s fantastic to be able to ‘be there’ virtually and see them. ” I asked Jordan what has influenced her as a musician: “Playing music is probably its own influence for me,” she replied. “If something stays being an important part of your life, then you just follow it and see where it takes you.” Jordan definitely thinks that SL could be a valid showcase for every kind of artist: “That’s why I am there,: she stated. “Many people seem to gravitate towards covers in SL, but I play my own music just about exclusively.

I throw in a cover sometimes, or two, if people request one, but I am there to play my own music. So yes, SL is a wonderful place to get exposure for your own music.” Jordan told me that, before she came into SL, she didn’t get that many album orders from the USA, since she played only in New Zealand and Germany. Now, she gets many of orders from the USA and other places where she has never performed in RL and, of course, she believes that it is almost all due to SL. In fact, her most recent album was able to be made thanks to SL residents. An investor had pulled out of an album funding so a fundraiser was

held and SL residents were so generous that it’s been possible to record and press the CD. Of course, SL residents on the group list are currently allowed to order it even if the CD won’t be available to the public until September. “The ‘thanks to’ is a list of names that is usually radio stations, magazines, the usual industry stuff and so on, but this time, approximately 50% of my thanks go to SL names from the people who made it happen.” says Jordan. I asked Jordan to describe her upcoming CD and here’s what she had to say. “It’s similar to my first album in “Birds of Prey” and the most recent one

“How the Dead Live” - that was set in New Zealand in a similar time period to the upcoming album (“1870 - 1900”) and also used a lot of sound found from machinery, as well as accoustic instruments and folktales. This new album is set in Wales and London, and follows a Welsh family as they head to the factories of London to look for work. “This is a really new thing for me,” she says. “It has really changed what is possible in terms of audience reach and audience involvement with music. In SL you get really close to the people who listen to your music and, if you are playing your own stuff, they are there because they love new music rather than because you are playing a bunch of things they already know. “ In the mid-1990s, before joining Second Life, Jordan had begun using many digital promotions. “Back then it was mainly having a website and a bit of streaming media. Since then, though, things have really blossomed and there are a lot of great platforms that support and promote music. “ The best platforms for Jordan are the ones that involve some kind of community where the people are there because they love music. She uses a lot of digital promotions. “It’s a pretty long list!” she says: “The sixtyone is one - it’s set up like a game where you get points for listening to new music, so that people don’t just listen to the same songs they already know. Reverbnation and Uvumi are a couple of other good ones. There are also the usual facebook and twitter pages that allow you to communicate though they aren’t so musically focused.

Podcasts are another wonderful thing to get involved with as a musician because podcasters are really open to new, fringe, and under-the-radar music and act as collators for it. Internet radio is also something I use frequently. I have a youtube page for all my videos.” Finally I asked her where she sees herself a year from now and if, at least for her, Second Life will still exist. “I try and play in SL as often as I can. It gets difficult sometimes, since I am doing a lot of shows and tours in RL, and playing festivals like Glastonbury takes quite a chunk out of my online time too.

I love playing the RL shows, but I try to make sure that, if I don’t have an RL show, I play online. I really love the sense of family and community in-world; it’s quite different from the RL shows, where you cant really be sure what people are saying while you’re playing, and there is not as much of an opportunity to get close to the audience because you play to them a lot less regularly.” FOLLOW JORDAN ON: http://www.jordanreyne.com/ http://www.myspace.com/jordanreyne http://www.youtube.com/JordanReyne http://twitter.com/JordanReyne http://www.reverbnation.com/jordanreyne

There are special hunt groups, hunt blogs, even calendars and checklists all dedicated to the many hunts in SL. Beginning next month, Second Nighter will feature hunt news in our magazine for those of you who are interested but may not be so “in the know” about the who’s who and the what’s what of hunts in SL. So what are these hunts exactly? Well, although, as consumers, most residents get a lot of free (or nearly free) items, the primary objective here is

actually for vendors to be able to showcase their designs and, hopefully, inspire resident hunters to shop in their stores. That said, most of the items you’ll find on hunts (though this certainly isn’t always the case) are going to be of a fairly decent quality. Whether or not you really NEED those blue and white striped pumps with the monarch butterfly sculpties on the toes is up to you.

If you aren’t an avid SL Hunter yourself, chances are very, very good that someone in your circle of friends diligently watches for hunt news and shars his or her findings with you. Hunts begin at specific starting points. Hunters are required to search for a specific item - perhaps a diamond or a star or a high heeled shoe. These are actually packages containing the hunt gift, a landmark to the store in which it was found and a landmark to the next hunt location.

Hunters are often given clues (though not always) and are asked not to create or give out cheat sheets to other hunters. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, hunts a long-standing tradition in SL and they’re here to stay. Even though the actual hunt highlight article won’t begin until next month, we here at Second Nighters thought it might be fun for you to check out a few of the hunts currently on the grid that will be running throughout the month of August.

CLUB OF THE MONTH

GHOST CLUB

In your journey through Second Life, you can find clubs to cater to almost any taste. Each one will have what most would call a gimmick or niche that they fit into or use to set themselves apart from the rest. But I’m sure when you take your first steps into Ghost Club, you will see that it’s so much more than that. Ghost Club is a lifestyle, a direction...a vision. One of individuality, empowerment, beauty and creativity. One that captures the very essence of the term that we have seen thrown around enough to make it cliche: Gothic. Yet, once you are there, you will see that “cliche” isn’t even in the same universe as this place. In 2010, one person began this vision. Megan Release, with the help of her dedicated staff, has turned this vision into a tangible, yet magical, experience in the Second Life club world. Megan took time out of her busy schedule to share with us a bit more about the story behind this place, how it came into being and what makes the Ghost Club vision a reality. “Hello and thank you for this opportunity to discuss building and creativity in SL and my club, g.h.o.s.t. When I started SL, I loved to visit the many clubs in-world. There are so many to choose from and the creativity is amazing. This is primarily one reason I love SL so much.

The ability to be creative and some of the freedoms to do this are immense. You can find any type of club you wish to visit if you know where to look. It was not just the big, top clubs, but the smaller, not-so-known places that interested me. When I started seeing how other clubs are run - the music, DJs, bands, decor, dancers and hosts - I was amazed and excited. I found I was fascinated by how others ran their clubs and personalized each element that grabbed my interest. I had never done this before in SL and the chance to step inside and create overwhelmed me. I attend, and still do to this day, all female clubs. I love them and have made many friends by visiting them and becoming a regular. I still visit different all-gender clubs as well, but something bothered me. I couldn’t find a club that played the music I love, though some come very close, yet I felt empty after awhile. I searched for months for an all-female Gothic/ Industrial club but I could not find one in-world. I have been told there was one ages ago, before my time, but it has since passed on. So I thought to myself, “I want to create a place that I would love to visit, where I could dance, listen to great music and find a home on the grid that fit my lifestyle.” As I contemplated the pros and cons, my resources and ideas started growing. My friends - very close and dear friends - offered to help as well. That is when I decided to create and open g.h.o.s.t..

The name came to me one day: Gothic House Of Sordid Temptations - perfect for what I wanted to achieve. I met some friends to discuss my idea; most loved it but some were skeptical. Some told me it was not a good idea, “A femaleonly Gothic club?” But I thought to myself, “If I don’t do this, I’ll never know if it could have worked.” I am a firm believer in do as you want, as long as you are not hurting anyone, so with my resources, friends and ideas, I set out to start this process. I saw how other clubs were run, I researched as much as I could. In RL, I am involved with marketing and advertising, so this part would not be an issue; even so, it is a challenge. I also have experience helping my brother run his club in RL. Because I’m also DJ in RL, I know the the ins and outs of music and performing, and this was another that drove me: getting the music out there - music that is rarely played around the grid. I researched SL’s land facts and myths. Later, I was to buy land which was the best decision I could make for the club. Now here I was with a blank parcel, a canvas if you will, to begin my art and creativity. When I started this project and vision, I had no idea about how to build things in SL. I found it was not as difficult as it seems. In fact, I discovered that building was actually a lot of fun. I learned the build and edit functions as I went along which is really the best method for me. I wanted a non religious environment (how this could be done in an old cathedral was a challenge), yet one to reflect my beliefs in Wicca. I certainly did not want to have all that demon/evil/devil/ Emo stuff like so many clubs do with this genre because that is not what I am about. I wanted to create an authentic, Gothic club. All of the pentacles in the club are facing in the right compass directions, and not upside down, which is evil. I did leave the cross on the top of the building alone, it doesn’t bother me at all and it keeps the charm and “gothiness” of the building alive. I set out to begin building from scratch. My first priority was the building itself. For a nice, Gothic theme, I immediately thought of an old cathedral type church.

Although there are several Gothic Clubs that use this theme, they all seemed strange to me - the feel and look didn’t seem correct to me. What works for them would not work for me. I searched for days, visited sample buildings, yet I could not find one until one day I decided to try my luck and purchased a set of cathedral parts. I couldn’t see a sample of it in-world as they didn’t have that on display to see but that turned out to be the best purchase I’d made so far. Once I rezzed the parts and put them together, I knew the size, look and feel of it was perfect. It was modifiable as well so I tore it up several times, part by part, to modify it to my liking.

I re molded it, enlarged it, changed textures because it was too “light” - I wanted it to be more of a darker environment. After I recreated the building, I set about to landscape around it. I wanted to create a dead forest with overgrown weeds, grasses and leafless, bleak trees. It is so amazing and fun to search and find that designers create these things with so much realism. I found treasure troves of material to create my vision. I played around with the placement of trees and grasses, textures for the ground and the extra little details like lights, stone pathways, fencing, torch lights, spider webs and even a mausoleum.

Now I was starting to really have fun and all of the sudden SL was a whole new world to me. I couldn’t stop!

I mounted it all, changing locations, adjusting heights and just trying out different combinations until I found the right look and feel.

The inside of the club was a great challenge but a lot of fun to decorate. I lifted floors, re-textured tiles, enlarged the second floor, took out columns and pushed some walls further out. I then got to the point where I needed to think about the sound and lighting systems. In SL, once again, I found a treasure trove of items at my disposal (and quite a few Lindens lol) to work with. I found a trellis system (the things that hold the lights and speakers in place) that was fully mod as well as a speaker system, lasers and lights.

Setting up the rest of the decor was a blast. I love art, so I searched for weeks for the perfect art for the walls that would reflect an all female Gothic look. That is what you will see in the club now. I added a small bar, some pews to sit on, even some arcane and galaxy animated dance floors. I added some couches and small details like Victorian tables and vases and even mosquito netting.

Eventually g.h.o.s.t. started to look the way I wanted it to look. Since its beginning days, I have rebuilt the entire club to fine-tune some things I didn’t like, such as the clutter of trees and the lack of a small pond, which I added now and a fountain as well. I even added a environment setting (which works for Phoenix viewers) that will set the proper world environment lighting. I even added a shopping district outside to match the theme of

Ghost with some very talented fashion designers of that genre. The last thing I needed to do was lower the script counts to reduce lag. I removed a ton of scripts and to this day it really is an important thing for any SL club owner to do. It took me two months to get everything set properly, the way I wanted it to look and feel. Then we did stream, staff and lag tests. Everything passed and I opened the club on October 9th, 2010.

I really think the hardest part is the marketing and staffing. Out of all I have learned, these two are a challenge to me, even to this day. Thank you for this interview and a wonderful magazine on the grid - Megan Release With all clubs in world seeing is believing, and you will believe when you visit the wonderful vision that is Ghost Club. This vision that is....Magic.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME AND WHY I LOVE DJING “I love all music. I collect it. My brother introduced me to amazing music through the years, as he has the largest collection of records and CDs I have ever seen (takes a whole basement for his collection)! Over the years, I’d discovered so many genres of music and * fell in love with all of it. My brother is also a DJ and club owner in RL. I’m lucky to have been immersed in that world. Because of that exposure, I was very inspired to become a DJ so I asked him to teach me what to do. Thankfully, he did! I learned a lot and soon, I was able to DJ in RL; a nice bonus to having a brother who’s a club owner is that I also got to learn the marketing and operating side of clubs, too. I love to DJ because I have so much music that I never hear in SL so I decided, “why not try sharing some of this with everyone?

Last week, I had the opportunity to sit down and visit with Lexie Jansma, the creator and organizer of the highly acclaimed The Mens 24 exclusive fashion event. The Mens 24 event is *the* event of the year for men in Second Life who want to stand out with style. This year’s event will be held from 19 - 27 August 2011. You DON’T want to miss it!

Eithne McBride: Lexie, why don’t you begin by telling me a little bit about your role in the fashion week. Lexie Jansma: The Mens 24 is my brain child...I created it. I am the owner of Siren Productions and the creator of Menswear Fashion Week which is a yearly event. We did it for the first time back in 2010 in January. We repeated it this year in March and will do it again in 2012 in January. One of the biggest things we hear is that there aren’t enough events for men and mens fashion. There is one major hunt - Menstuff; otherwise, mens fashion gets pushed back into the background. We felt that mens fashion deserved a bit more recognition than an annual event so we created The Mens 24 to be a companion event.

Eithne McBride: So what did it take to get it all started? Lexie Jansma: A lot of hard work....and groundwork....I had to decide who my initial designers were. Send them invitations at the same time I was getting event sponsors includ KMADD, Menstuff, Virtual World Network, and Secondnights.com...I was also working with several magazines to get publicity including AVENUE Magazine, Bestyle, E-Style, Icon, Too Sexy, Scruplz, Peoplz, and Maniera. As designers decided to not take part then I was able to give their invitation to someone else. Also planning the shows, events, and all that there really is a lot that goes into it. A lot of talking with people...being encouraging...following up...and trying to keep a bright positive spirit through it all because there is ALWAYS something that needs to be fixed. Eithne McBride: Wow! Don’t tell me this was a one-woman undertaking... or was it?? Lexie Jansma: Well, I organize everything - it’s a big job but I’ve got some terrific help, too. I have a media manager, Augusta Carver...she liasions with the bloggers...does press releases....and stuff like that...maintains our website, Flickr, Plurk, Facebook, and Twitter. Then there is Lorelei Maggs - she is my partner and she gives me advice...she also does a great deal of building and research and we toss ideas back and forth. Lorelei keeps me sane. I can say things to her that I don’t to others, or can’t.

Rob1977 Moonites gave me some geat advice at the start of the event...but I have really run this one a great deal on my own. Surprisingly, it hasn’t been too difficult. Its not like Menswear Fashion Week where I deal with over 80 designers and I need a full team of people. There is Epileptic Dreddmore - she handles the DJs for shows, hosts for events, that sort of thing....and Alesia Schumann deals with the photography. Eithne McBride: So tell me how this might compare to a similar event in RL. Lexie Jansma: It is comparable to any sort of Real Life Fashion Week, whether in Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, New York, Milan....all the designers will have booths on the sim with their limited edition exclusive items in there along with their other items created for the event. Then they will include other items from their line to show what they do and what they have to offer. We did some pigeonholing when it came to this event....take Egoism, for example....we have him as a menswear designer. But Ramses also does skins, accessories, and so many other areas. Or Ry0ta Exonar from Prodigial - he’s a talented skin designer but he also does clothes. However, we are featuring Egoism as a menswear designer and Ry0ta as a skin designer for the event. We also have several fashion shows like any other RL fashion week. We will be showing all the limited edition exclusive outfits on the runway twice. We are also featuring LaVie Skins as well as Gizza Creation clothes. Eithne McBride: Tell me, have you seen much change in mens fashion since you first began Mens24? Lexie Jansma: Oh yes, a great deal! People are starting to care about mens fashion...and men are starting to demand better quality... there is everything from casual...and meningerie [lingerie for men]....to couture for men now. When I first

got into SL there weren’t many options for the guy who wanted to be well-dressed. Now, there are tons of options and more appear every day. Textures have improved...shading....patterns... sculpts...and so on. Eithne McBride: I see! How many models would you say we can expect to see, approximately? Lexie Jansma: You will see 41 models, give or take a few, between events and runway shows. Eithne McBride: You know, I’m noticing that the concept of male models seems to be starting to really take off in SL! Lexie Jansma: Oh yes...male models are all the rage....I mean you still hear about female models... but it is really the male models who seem to be making a huge splash. It’s like it’s the year of the male or something. Eithne McBride: Yes! I was just noticing that there are some *really* nice men’s skins and shapes that are starting to pop up around the grid and they’re not all the upsidedown triangles with Mr. Universe muscles with no butt any more! Lexie Jansma: and its not just about the shapes... skins....hair...facial hair.... men’s skins have come SOOOOOO far - it is insane! Eithne McBride: YES! I’ve seen a new male model with Avenue - Hikaru Enimo. Will we be lucky enough to see him in your show? He’s lovely and a very gracious person as well :) Lexie Jansma: Nope he will not be in the shows... we use Siren models exclusively. ;) Eithne McBride: How many models are signed with Siren, by the way? Lexie Jansma: We have between 60-70 males and females.

Eithne McBride: Very nice! - what would you say the male to female ratio is right now? Lexie Jansma: Females still win out...there are tons of female models to every few male models. In a world where everyone can be pretty, everyone thinks they can be a model Eithne McBride: Isn’t it amazing? There’s really so much more to it than just looking pretty. Eithne McBride: Suppose I was an average guy in SL. How could I find out more - get in touch with the things there are to offer? I mean, I hear that from guys a lot. They just don’t always know where to look, know what i mean? Lexie Jansma: MENStuff is a great group to get involved with...they do amazing hunts atleast 2 times a year...with 150 designers creating products all geared toward guys. They also have a lounge where designers have created nice give-away items. Then also there’s the group...the menswear designers are always sending notices about what their latest items are. Another great place to stay in touch with what’s going on in mens fashion is KMADD. Their sim features a showcase of some of the best designers across the grid. Eithne McBride: I think what you’re doing is outstanding - and *so* needed in SL! Lexie Jansma: I do, too; its why Rob and I originally created Menswear Fashion Week. Eithne McBride: What makes Mens24 different from Menswear Fashion Week (other than the sheer difference in size)? Lexie Jansma: Well, let’s see...we open on the morning of the 19th with the Exclusives Fashion Show that is being taped to be aired on Virtual World Media. Then we have some fabulous industry parties, including one from AVENUE MAgazine, Menstuff, KMADD, Maniera, Scruplz/Peoplz, ICON/ Too Sexy, Second Nights. Additionally, we are

hosting a Red Party where we will be having the fabulous DJ, Thorn Andel....we have Rusch Raymaker, CEO of Avenue, spinning at the Avenue Industry Party. We are closing the event with A Film Noir Closing Party with two live performers and Best Film Noir Look. We have live performers every day, including some of the best on the grid. One of the key differences is that, for Menswear Fashion Week, anyone who creates menswear can take part in that event. We produce three to four fashion shows a day, including individual shows showcasing one designer and group shows highlighting several designers. The Mens 24, on the other hand, is by invitation only; it is limited to 24 menswear designers, 4 skin designers, 4 hair designers, and 4 accessory designers and that is it. They are all creating 3 special pieces for the event including 1 limited edition exclusive which, after the event, will dissapear and not to be offered anywhere on the grid. There will only be 100 of them for sale from each designer. So you do the math...100 items and how many men in SL? You are getting something unique, stylish, and interesting to add to your wardrobe. The odds of someone else owning it are very slim. Eithne McBride: And musicians for the Mens24 event? Do you get to divulge any confirmations yet? Lexie Jansma: We Have Trum Diesel, Blu Ducrot,Zerbie MAgic, CECI Dover, PM, Bookmite, and Harper Messmer to name a few. More details and an updated calendar are available here: http:// www.secondnights.com/cms/events/themens-24. We are also working with Moda Fashion Primetime to feature all the designers on their show on Monday evening, which is really fabulous! Eithne McBride: that’s fantastic! Lexie Jansma: We’re also doing a special edition of Fashion Nation to be aired on Virtual World

Network! Eithne McBride: Wow... do you have any time for RL after all this? LOL! Lexie Jansma: I stay busy in RL too, lol! Eithne McBride: I can imagine and I can relate! Eithne McBride: Before we say good bye, Lexie, is there anything else you’d like me to share with our readers? Lexie Jansma: Absolutely! Please come out and support Mens Fashion! Support our designers. Come visit, get something creative, fantastic, and unique for your wardrobe....all the designers have worked really hard and deserve a special thank you! All of our Sponsors deserve a huge thank you including KMADD, MENStuff, VWN, and Secondnights.com as well as our media partners, Avenue, Bestyle, E-Style Magazine, ICON, Maniera, MODA Fashion Primetime,Nasa Club, Peoplz,Scruplz Eithne McBride: I agree 100%. Thank you so much for taking time out of your hectic schedule to chat with me, Lexie! Lexie Jansma: Thank you, too, Eithne!

Virtual Impressions in Second Life Recently, I had the opportunity to visit with Chrissy Ambrose, creator, designer, manager and everything else for Virtual Impressions an elegant jewelry and footwear store with unique, hand-crafted designs in Second Life: Second Nighter (SN): Hi, Chrissy! Let’s talk about your wonderful store, Virtual Impressions. How long have you been in business? Chrissy Ambrose (CA): I’ve had a store in Second Life for nearly four and a half years. Second Nighter: Wow, nice! Has it always been named Virtual Impressions? CA: Yes, always! Most of the jewelry is on the formal side with gems and gold or platinum. I do have some casual pieces, too, but not as many. SN: How long does it usually take to design a piece? CA: That depends. On average, I’d say perhaps five hours; longer if I have to sculpt pieces for it. SN: Do you have a design team or staff that works with you? CA: Nope, I’m it. SN: Wow! Now I’m doubly impressed. CA: I do sell a variety of footwear, including some thigh high boots. Most of my designs are boots and shoes for daywear, though. (author’s note: I had been to a techno club the night before and had forgotten to change out of my clubwear when I met with Chrissy a little embarrassing for me but we had a good laugh!)

SN: Don’t mind me... I’m just drooling over your SN: We’re all different - that’s the beauty of Second styles; some things in RL most definitely translate Life - but personally, I’d rather pay for a beautiful, to SL! well-crafted uniquely sculpted boot. What lead you to designing your own sculpts? CA: Oh, thank you! My designs are mostly unique - I make my own sculpts. CA: It was literally just a matter of learning the skill and then being able to say, “hey, I can do this!” And SN: Now that’s truly impressive! What’s your ratio of course, seeing something I want to try to make. of footwear and jewelry? SN: I don’t think I’d even know where to begin making CA: I would say that My store has approximately 70% my own sculpt so, if you don’t mind, I’ll just leave jewelry and 30% footwear. that level of creativity up to people like you! SN: What made you decide to start designing CA: It’s all practice and determination, the only way jewelry and shoes and second, how difficult was it to lean anything, and, of course, to not give up if it to get started? seems difficult at the start! CA: I didn’t have much photoshop expericence when SN: Therein lies my downfall, ha! I began creating things in Second Life. Prims were easier to pick up at the time and I just decided to CA: It’s just so nice to see some shape I want have begin making shoes. Jewelry came later. in a jewelry piece and simply be able to make it! SN: Oh gosh, do you remember how different shoes SN: Chrissy, thanks so much for taking time out of were four years ago? your busy second life to chat with me today; it’s truly been a pleasure! CA: Oh yes and I used to make them very primmy and glitzy. And bling, lots of bling, lol! CA: Thank you, too! SN: Oh for sure, I remember! CA: I began creating jewelry a little later with the odd piece and then, as I gained more experience, it became my main product line. I do still create shoes and boots but not as often. There are many designers who simply use templates and kits that anyone can buy so the competition for shoes is pretty big. My jewelry, on the other hand, will always be unique.

1) How did you discover Second Life and what made you create an account? I first came across Second Life via my real life partner about five years ago. He was already in world building and playing about with it and kept telling me that I should join up. At the time I was more interested in my MMO’s that I was playing online and wasn’t really interested in Second Life. I think it was about a year later I finally created an account in 2007, my real life partner took me to places to get clothing, skins etc and really I just loved it from that moment onwards. I was also adamant at the time that I would forge ahead and find my own path within Second Life. My partner was building and his store so I wanted to find something for myself to do. I dabbled in quite a few things and at one point tried making my own clothes which never amounted too much. Just as in real life I love exploring places and that sense of exploration I bring with me into the virtual world and just love seeing places and walking around them. 2) And when you discover the virtual photography art ? I’ve always taken pictures in the MMO’s I’ve played over the years and still do, kind of like a scrapbook of what I’ve done, the games I’ve played and the places I’ve played in, because there just as fantastic and amazing as real life places. Whether it’s an MMO like Everquest 2 or Second Life I can still be awed and amazed by the work that has gone into building and creating that space from scratch. Taking pictures of my explorations within Second Life seemed like a natural thing to do. For me it’s never been about ‘look at me’ ‘look at my work and what I can do’. I just want to share with other people this amazing virtual world and all the different things that happen within it.

3) How you describe your Photo style ? and what kind of subjects you like ? I’m not sure if I have a particular photo style although I’m sure some would correct me on that. I like to dabble and experiment with different photo styles and see what I like with the image I’ve taken. A lot of the places I explore the images I take are all about the environment of that place, whether it’s a forest, or frozen tundra or an art installation and I love taken pictures of places like that. Seeing what people create it’s an amazing process to witness. For my fashion blog on male clothing in Second Life the photo’s focus on the clothing I’m wearing and incorporate the places I visit. 4) You took inspiration by RL and by famous Artist ? There are a lot of artists that inspire me and across a wide range of fields both in the real and the virtual worlds. I think I’ve been blessed and quite fortunate to come across and met people that have inspired me in many ways throughout my life. Music is a big influence in my life, I’m always listening to music whenever I’m at my computer or out and about in the real world. I listen to such a wide variety of music it’s such a big part of my life and always has been. Writers like Clive Barker and Neil Gaimon I adore, the imagery from their words inspires me a lot in some of the looks I put together.

5) What have you been doing in SL? Tell us your story: what have you been up to or what have you created. I’ve been in SL now for four years and I love it just as much as I did then. The only time I’ve ever really made things was when I lived out on the Wastelands sims, I made my own home and various bits and pieces to go along with it. The same when I lived in Insilico for nearly a year. I rented my home and then built within it to fit my theme and role-played there as a robot working for Gemini Cybernetics. That was a fantastic time and loved every minute of it. Now most of my time is spent working on my blog and shopping for clothes. LOL I can certainly quite happily shop till I drop, especially if I come across a store I love and I’ll just buy everything I like. 6) How SL let you improve your know how or skills ?* It’s certainly improved my skills in so many ways. The way I shoot pictures and work has changed dramatically over the years. There are some fantastic tutorials that have helped me along the way. Tutorials by Strawberry Singh, if it hadn’t been for her tutorials and showing how to use shadows I most probably would never have used them. 7) You work for magazines ? No I don’t. 8) You do works for single people ? how can we get your photo shots ? No I don’t. It’s something I have considered doing before, but to be honest there are far better people in Second Life who take amazing profile shots of individuals. People like Strawberry Singh and Nigel Riel do amazing work, I admire what they do and it always pushes me to do better in my own work.

9) Tell us your story: what’s your interest ? what you like to do in SL for having fun ? I love exploring Second Life and everything it has to offer. Discovering new designer’s is always fantastic and sharing their work with a wider audience through my blog. I’m very proud of my blog and love working on it. Taking photo’s, working on them and posting them to flickr is something I enjoy doing a lot. 11) Have you some beautiful places to suggest our friends to explore and take pictures ? There are so many amazing and beautiful places in Second Life. Particular favourites include Lost World by Lolmac Shan is gorgeous. I absolutely love Tya Fallingbridge’s ‘Pixel Mode’ and hope that she re-opens it soon again. Anything by Bryn Oh is definitely worth visiting and love the Immersiva sim. The Wastelands and Insilico are two of my favourite roleplayer sims, just great places to explore and take pictures. 12) Could you share a funny or awkward story that happened to you inSL?* Mmmm lol. When I first joined SL I bought a penis and forgot to remove it when I went to a shopping district. I had no idea it was there till a woman im’d and pointed out that I was still wearing it. I was so mortified lol. So always remember to remove attachments.
