Throught my work and education I have gatherd experience in architecture, working in various scale projects and installations. As a result, I now posses a wide set of skills and therefore I consider myself ready to cope new challenges. Being involved in various types of projects over the years helped me to become effective and efficient, with a tendency to be curious and learn quickly. I am constantly improving my skills and trying to adopt different approaches used in design process.

ARTSENAL industrial site conversion [program]

exhibit space, cinema, restaurant, workshops, multifunctional stage, library, museum Arsenalului Street Targoviste, Romania june 2012 diploma project

The Subject

The subject of this project is represented by the conversion of the industrial site, “The Army Arsenal”, located in Romania, Tirgoviste, site also known in the past as foderie. 2. The Reason The issue with the factories and industrial sites that lose their functionality and become “white spots” located in the city is very present and one that requires interventions in order to reintegrate them in the present. The cities are expanding and transforming continuously and tight connection between the center and the periphery is main advantage of a successful urban progress. The key point to the urban development ,ar 8

chitecturally speaking is the iundustrial sites that in the present have no functionality. Many of this sites contains constructions or assemblies of great value for the industrial patrimony and have also edifices that are in a pretty good shape structurally speaking, that can be reused in order to assign them new functionalities due to the type of space that defines them and the free plan representative to halls and production spaces. Through conversion, through re-utilization, the negative image of this sites is transformed in the collective memory in a positive one becoming in time a city emblem, a local Brand cultural chatacter , suppressed and diminished in the communist era should be now emphased.

3 The City

The Site:

The site is situated in Tirgoviste the residence of Dimbovita county from Muntenia region Romania. The city has a number o habitants 90000 and is located near the capital Bucharest (70km ~1h car drive) and also Ploiesti and Pitesti. Being the royal residence and the capital for the 1396-1714 period, the city owned over three centuries the statute of the most important economic, cultural artistic and polical-military center of “Tara Romaneasca”. Nowadays the city, as it is shown in the debate for approving the new PUG, has a nature situated at the CONFLUENCE of cultural-histouc/ midevil –industrial. The first question for the debate was soething like this:”What is the development trend?Twoards industry, turism or historic city with university valence ?”.The predominance of industry in the south area and downtown obstruct the development towards this area. The conclusion: the industrial development as an area should stop at this poit and an intensive development for this surface should be followed. This being said we can state that the city finds itself in front of a crucial moment when the restoration of the cultural chatacter , suppressed and diminished in the communist era should be now emphased.

The site is situated in the close proximity and with a close connection with the city center area. The neighbor areas play an important role in the progress of the project. The present surrounding area and the context represent the starting key point. -in the past a big part of the site was included into the gardens of the City Church outlining a tight connection between the city center and the old industrial construction. -in the 60’s this area was wanted hidden , the arrier of block of flats varying between P+6/P+10 drew a line between the city center and the discussed site, a curtain that hided the industrial area. -after 1989 considerable plots from UPET factory were sold, and on this plots super-markets were build. So it happens that in the immediate proximity of the main façade PenyMarket was build. The positon of the site, between a factory a super-market and a barrier of blocks of flats , between commercial and places to live and work, the solution dose not obey the context but does not deny it either trying to solve the existent problems(reestablish the value of the existing building and the reconnection with the city center) and to realize an coexistence statute. The current situation present itself like this: -the terrain was sold and it’s the property of…. -from the 6 initial halls symmetrically disposed in 2 corps in a shape of an U only 3 one group is still standing with 3 halls .The facades of this halls were to be included in the

volumetric of the mall project. -in 2007 the halls are declared historical monument and the mall project is stopped ,no innervations were allowed. After including the halls in the class B monuments they were arson and one of them lost the roof structure . Because of the soundings, having no opening towards a perspective, favorable image, the solution becomes an introverted on, the focus is set to the patio. The patio is not closed, bit open inviting the pedestrians in created public space. THE FAÇADE is composed of mobile panels mare of perforated corten and in is used to accomplish the same goal, to filtrate and targeting the natural light towards the interior spaces and to crate a game of shadows and light, similar to a forest place. THE MATERIAL used for the façade , perforated corten, reminds of the old functionality. As mentioned earlier the halls were also known as FONDERIE, a place for forging metal. The façade is neuter, uniform, it has no empty spaces for dorrs or windows, but the pace of the structure , the placement of the panels and the placement of the perforations take after the rhythm of the old façade. The Tower -through its height it’s a signal for the city and a belvedere point. -the position gives him the statute of the vertical node that points and ties the different functionalities of the project.

The Tower -through its height it’s a signal for the city and a belvedere point. -the position gives him the statute of the vertical node that points and ties the different functionalities of the project. -the dematerialization suggest the connection with the Chirch. The Tower is open for the North Side , with a visible metallic structure , and the part that hols the stair and the elevators is covered with an metallic net with creepers. This façade with intermediate green terraces give the impression of an oasis , a vertically green space a connection with the Curch garden. The tower plays the role of reestablishing tne connection with the city center ad reconciling the boundaries imposed by modernism. Another important idea fir this project is the one of maintaining and potentiation of the memory and identity of the architectural object. This is accomplished by keeping in plan of the historical configuration on the Arenal, and of the volumetric forms. The old assembly , being a part of the industrial military patrimony stands out through symmetry and repetition of full-empty on the façade. This gives the rhythm. The order and discipline present in the army are represented in architecture through symmetry and repetition. The new volume, although are part of the same formal group, are different then the existing ones through the angles and heights. This diagonal game brings dynamic for the new compositions , also necessary for the chosen functionality.

The old facade’s rhythm is transposed through structural pace that can be easily noticed once the ground floor is opened. The DYNAMICS can be easily felt through the court-yard design, like an green oasis in hostile environment. The design is accomplished with layers: an rectangular trama that has a square base and a compsed one from curved lines that lead the user towards the major points of interest. The design shapes itself by using different types of textures. The green color is not present only in the exterior space but it reaches inside the buildings providing relaxation spaces. Through the extension of the green space inside the building I’ve created an alternative environment in which the boundary between inside and outside is diminished. side create the illusion of an outside space in the interior. It is a game of INSIDE/OUTSIDE. This transformation will lead to an urban environment in which the green space and the public space extends inside the building. The FLEXIBILITY AND REVERSABILITY are two of the main concerns of the project -by using metallic structures , with wide openings, we obtain very wide space that in time can change their functionality, furniture them does not depend on the structure. -the new halls and the interventions on the pld monument are mostly done with metallic structures. In the case of the monument the proposed structure is independent of the existing one and dose not interfere. This considerents make the proposal reversible ,typical for industrial sites

that extends, diminish or transform. The proposal for the urban center of experimental art center tries to benefit the host with an identity also bringing cultural capital to the table. A fact to be rembered is that this functionality was not at forst a priorty, this was chosen after finding the site. After a social study from which 43% form a sample of 230 persons responded that what the city lack in are the recreation places; and after a multicriterial analysis made during the pre-diploma period I’ve realized that this space is suited for creative and educational purpose with an wide age target. A new functionality (a place for art and show ) for an old (and silent building) represents an architectural and technological challenge. A new building rises from the old one.The new one does not touch the old one that remains visible and its more valuable through this addition.

The multitude of functionalities addresses the project to a wide age target during any time of day , from early morning till late in the night , the building will host didactic activities ,reharsals, production.creation, expositions. galleries, shows etc. In conclusion I can say that I’ve tried to accomplish 2 important things with this project the reinvention/salvation on an monumented treated with indifference for more the 20 years and the reconnection of the site with the city center and alos to create a green space and contrast full with the surroundings a oasis in an hostile urban place. This can serve as an example for the whole area regeneration bringing an viable alternative to the consumerism.

“Architecture it’s like sidering this aspect and the idea of urban room, I used frozen music. Urban Room in the project refers to that corner own home, a place where pleasure to retreat to meditate, place that always gives you the feeling of escape from the everyday. Music and color are the elements that define this feeling seems perfect. I tried to transpose music as color and shape, through it all at gaining a strong visual impact and become an important landmark in the area. By treating the theme park psychedelic arrangement (music) the place gets an identity, a well-defined shape. Order the entire space plan that is based on a fragment of a song "Clair de Lune"-Debussy composition characterized by calm and harmony. Depending on the tone, intensity and duration of the sound he gets a certain color and shape, and also the site in a Specific use (ringing tones higher and shorter in time become the main routes due to the sensation of movement that suggests. .). The analysis found that noise pollution site is located in an area of very high pollution and con-

various "filters" for privacy (curtain of water, trees, walls glass tubing, etc.). The maximum degree of privacy is the "small room" with a wall of glass tubes suggests the organ pipes, a place where you can listen to the music you want by selecting it from a computer. Spatial although the impact has a strong identity based on color, material and shape, is characterized by versatility, it can acquire a new meaning in light and Color (place nightly concerts). Color is an answer to this Bucharest oppressive that if you choke and still felt vibrations Ceausescu era.
