VERNACULAR Silhouette (2015-2023)
It is the first book of the three-volume series “Personal Impulses 2015-2023” by visual artist Silviu Preda. This book illustrates a collection of about 400 vernacular photographs realized by the artist during the last 8 years, works that haven’t had such a high visibility in the public environment.
Although he has accustomed us in his art exhibitions to his characteristic style, dominated by vibrant colours, symbolic allegories, a metamix between pop-art, kitsch and the sphere of decorative arts, it can be said that “Vernacular Silhouette” is like an antithesis to his already well-known works.
An antithesis in which Preda reveals another facet of his personality, an intimate side of his everyday life, where he abandons psychedelic colours in favour of the chiaroscuro of monochrome photography, valuing form and minimalism in his surroundings over the grandiosity of kitsch elements.
It is a collection of works in which the artist moves away from the advertising side, from the carefully directed butaphoric accents, while seeking that “decisive moment” captured in documentary photography.
The artist sacrifices the visual resorts that have established him, such as the bath of light, the carefully stylized studio models in exchange for the dramatic atmosphere, photographic graining and the random patterns that become the subject of photographic voyarism.
Cropography, shadow - penumbra, form, movement, experiment and documentation are the defining terms of this series of photographic captures, that oscillates between studio photography, landscape, photojournalism and experiment.
Similar to a photographic diary, built on the background of landscapes captured on his expeditions to Sweden, Italy, Serbia and Hungary, it includes even images from various corners of the country, but also a series of scenes took on trains and planes.
He starts from photographic experiments in the studio, to decontextualisation and abstraction of everyday objects through photography, including a series of images from the pandemic period.
Therefore, in his book “Vernacular Silhouette”, Silviu Preda invites you to see the past 8 years of his life from a different perspective, in shades of gray.
SILVIU PREDA
Born in 1997 in Rm. Vâlcea - Romania, he is a young visual artist, an adept of studio photography, where he capitalizes on the dialectic between light, form and color.
His works are characterized by vibrant colors dominated by an allegorical representation of social and personal symbols.
Preda made himself known since his study period at the Faculty of Arts and Design in Timișoara, through the themes he reflected on in his works, thus arousing the interest of the public, critics and art collectors.
Scholarship holder of the Royal Margareta Foundation of Romania, winner of the “Griselini Master” trophy and member of the UAPR, the artist has gathered in his portfolio various national and international awards, recently winning gold medals at competitions such as: “Budapest International Photo Awards 2022”, “International Salon of Photographic Art in Arad”.
Since 2016, he has participated in over 75 national group exhibitions, 15 international group exhibitions (Italy, Hungary, Serbia, France and Germany), five personal exhibitions, and his works have been published in 25 art catalogues.
Among the most important appearances are: his solo shows: “5 O’Clock Pandemic TEA” from Tiny Griffon Gallery (Nürnberg, GERMANY), “DYSTOPIA” - Artex Gallery of the Rm. Vâlcea Branch of UAP Romania, “TWISTED mind I” from the Bastion Multifunctional Center, “TWISTED mind II” - Timișoara Students’ House of Culture and “The Autopsy of an Ephemeral Society” part of the International Biennale of Visual Art from Brașov, Blue Biennale 2021, also participating in several collective exhibitions, such as: “ALUMNI EXPO” (Timișoara), “DIPLOMA” (Bucharest), “Vision and Concept” (Serbia), “Experimenta. The other photography exhibition - Rome” 2022 (Italy), “Ost Anders Festival “ (Germany) and “The Art of Photography Barcelona” (Spain).
