Guild Group Exhibit

Curated by Susan Eley Owner & Director of Susan Eley FIne Art, NYC November 18 - December 20, 2018

I am delighted and honored to have been asked to guest curate the 2018 Silvermine Guild Group Show. My family has a deep history with Silvermine. My mother, Carole Eisner, is a long-time Guild member who since the 1970’s has exhibited her sculptures in group and solo exhibitions at Silvermine. Most recently she showed two small sculptures in CT Contemporary 2018 and 10 large-scale sculptures in Carole Eisner: Painted Sculpture 2015. From the time I was a child I have visited Silvermine, accompanying my parents in support of my mother’s career. Reviewing artwork by 137 artists for this exhibition was no easy task. While culling through hundreds of paintings, photographs, prints, collages, mixed media, textiles and sculpture, I felt like a kid in a candy store. A plethora of well-crafted and innovative artwork greeted me at each turn of the digital page. Naturally, I was not able to include all the artwork that peaked my curiosity and delighted my senses. Several rounds through the digital Slide Room submissions page led me to a final selection of 83 artworks by 44 artists in a range of media, styles and techniques. My criteria for selecting art has been the same since 2006, the year I established Susan Eley Fine Art, a contemporary art gallery on the Upper West Side of New York City. Art that attracts me is executed with a high level of craft and technical proficiency, and expresses something new, that which I have never seen before. I would like to thank all the Guild members for their professional and well thought out submissions. And a special thank you to Silvermine and in particular to Gallery Director Roger Mudre for entrusting me with this job and guiding me through the process. Susan Eisner Eley

Silvermine Arts Center is a nearly century-old organization dedicated to excellence in art and art education that inspires creativity and builds community. Located on five bucolic acres, Silvermine encompasses a School of Art with over 4,000 annual enrollments; an Outreach Education Program serving 1,000 under-resourced students annually; a Guild of over 300 professional artists; an outdoor Sculpture Walk; a permanent print collection; and five free, public galleries exhibiting contemporary art. Silvermine has been a place for artists to gather since 1906 when visionary sculptor Solon Borglum moved to the area and held annual exhibitions in his studio and weekly artist-critiques called the Knockers Club. In 1922 The Silvermine Guild of Artists was incorporated as a not-for-profit to provide a permanent and supportive community of artists. Guild members represent artists that have a high level of accomplishment and are selected through a jurying process. Our Galleries have exhibited and involved art luminaries such as Joseph Albers, Gabor Peterdi, Milton Avery, Elaine deKooning, Clement Greenberg, Louise Nevelson, Larry Rivers, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Faith Ringold, James Rosenquist, Chuck Close, Philip Johnson, and many others. The Galleries continue to expand on our heritage by presenting visually compelling exhibitions of art by emerging and internationally recognized artists, accompanied by programs that encourage appreciation of art and its role in society. Our layered, approach includes programs tailored to make our exhibitions meaningful, accessible, and enjoyable for diverse audiences of every age and background. Many of our landmark exhibitions are juried by distinguished guest curators. All of our exhibitions offer opportunities for visitors to connect with art and each other through an exploration of ideas. What attracts artists, students, and visitors to Silvermine is the pivotal role it plays as an inclusive gathering place that deepens understanding through the arts. Silvermine is grateful for the generosity of its supporters. Gifts ensure excellence now and for generations to come. Inquires on how you can make a difference, should be directed to Robin Jaffee Frank, robin@silvermineart.org or calling 203.966.5617 x21.
