Kindergarden This is a place of play, a place dedicated to the children, their development, where every perspective and scenery has a well established role. Before entering the kindergarden, the parent and child pass a small park, making the short separation of the two, easier. The whole transition, from the entrance to the class room, is made by a passage way orientated to a green courtyard. Each children class has its own building volume, the class room is at the ground floor, and at the upper floor is the bedroom The windows are large, to light the interior spaces, and orientated to the courtyard, to create an ongoing relation interior-exterior, learn-play. Also, each group gets a dedicated outdoor space and another, large,

joint space where all the children can meet and play. The individual court has a wall for drawing, where one can notice small talented artists, and another wall, with colored big perforations where children can enter and play. The entire ensemble has a multi-functional hall, where regular performances, for both children and parents, can take place. This hall is located between the entrance volume and the volumes for the classes, and sits on a green area. Teachers come down a walkway, predominantly glazed, around this center volume, and go to the class rooms. An alley that connects the entrance zone with the inner garden, creates a vibrant framed path which can be a drawing-expo, where parents can admire their children’s drawing in fresh air. We propose a place of imagination, where all that is to be done is to : learn, play and spend the beautiful moments of childhood.

Collective A first step in developing the project was the analysis of the collective housing typology, most common in the socialist regime, which is the classic block of flats. It is a closed, rigid element, which connects with the outside only through type windows or small, crowded and poorly designed balconies. With the desire to break this pattern, the volume is result of a defragmentation and withdrawal of element, which generate generous, individual balconies. The ensemble consists of a long unit, intersected with another, a high volume, continuing the front on the main boulevard. Both of them house appartments of 2..3 rooms. The other two volumes, facing two secondary streets, host another housing typology, with individual 2 or 3 levels high appartements.

housing

A study on the pedestrian circulation led to a interior court, below ground level, which houses many other housing-complementary functions. Thus, some of them are linked to the houses above ground level, through a vertical circulation. The inner court can be accesed by 3 exterior stairs, and communicates with another public area, facing the main boulevard.

Public Space The studied site is located in the center of Bucharest, in front of the Operetta Theatre, surrounded by important buildings like the National Theatre, Intercontinental Hotel and ArCub. The intense circulated, and somewhat sheltered from the main street area, has allowed us to develop a space dedicated to performance. A space at -1.5 m below ground level becomes a protected place, by giving him a different type of treatment that the other areas on the site. It is bordered on one side by stairs and on the other three sides by ramps, some line, others steep, wherre one can go down or stay and enjoy the show scene can be anywhere. It can be among people in the middle or on one side of the cultural buildings. The north facade of the theatre can be a big projection screen or a background for

the actors on stage. Thus, the show inside invades the outer space. The intention to revitalize the site also materialized at the introverted cafÊ on the north side of the Operetta Theatre, which we took outside, and gave optimal space for better functioning. The current façade of the Operetta Theatre, with its pace of identical vertical and horizontal forms, transmits a certain strictness and becomes a heavy and static presence on the site. Our proposal aims to bring to life the idea of mask facade, symbol of theater everywhere, to create a lively mask over the heavy look. Through an independent structure mounted over the existing façade,we offer a different picture, a much more dynamic one. During the day, it takes several appearances, given by either

the light - shadow effects, the wind, or even the touch of a bird that lingers for a moment in her flight there. The system thus consists of plates hung in vertical frames, that can be activated by different mechanical stimuli and seem like curtains announcing the show. This modern intervention can be replaced in the future without affecting the old facade. The front vertical slats continue in the horizontal plane where they take the form of urban furniture within the public scene.

Social

Integration

The site is located in the central part of the city, along a major traffic artery, with rich history, which is Calea Mosilor. The evolution of the urban texture in this area is closely linked with the existence of the Church of Saints, and around it developing a particular zone, called Maidan. The name was given to a place that was next to a church and used for trading goods. It is also a meeting point, a marketplace in which are held specific activities. The project started with the intention of recomposing the diluated Maidan, which had transformed over time to the actual space. The area around the church is occupied by buildings mostly from the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century, in which gipsies live, and use the space improperly. We considered necessary to set up a center for them, that would respond to their needs for education, mentoring, training and social integration. This center is designed to be a welcoming space, a place where their cultural interests can be found. Here, they find a place to practice various crafts that are learned from one

Center

generation to another, to sell their work and be a useful source of inspiration. Through this ideea , tradition and authentic craftsmanship are sustained. Once they had acquaired the place, learning is provided in an educational service unit. They will be able to attend classes for learning romanian and foreign languages, familiarity with the computer and other courses suited to their needs. Knowledge and development of the individual is a priority in the social integration center. Also, another building volume houses the “gypsy treasure, a museum of traditions and objects that are part of their culture, which some people know little or nothing about, and can gain the value and respect if they are displayed in a proper way. This space is defined by a number of modules with adjustable configuration, reminders of the nomadic spirit of the gypsy ethnicity.

Urban

Hotel

The site is located in the center of Bucharest, near Victoria Square, along a major road Berzei-Buzesti. The hotel is developed in two directions, one along the street Berzei – Buzesti, and another along the adjacent street, Sergiu Dumitru. This two side distribution, has all the rooms facing the city. We wanted to offer, the individuals going to the hotel room, a controled perspective, and decided to make the boring and confined corridors, rich in light, and in permanent relation with an interior garden. There, people can take a night walk in the park or have a morning coffee. The hotel has a Spa, developed on two levels, with pool, sauna, gym and aerobics. It also benefits from two restaurants that can extend outside on the sunny days of summer. The first is positioned at the ground floor and can be accessed by both the hotel individuals and outsiders, and the second restaurant is located on the mezzanine and is exclusively for people

staying in the hotel. Both have large glazed surfaces and communicate with large garden outside. Being located in a predominantly business area, the hotel features the first two levels with an conference room for about 300 people, two meeting rooms and an office area, for those who come for business. The two facades of the hotel have different treatment, the one facing Buzesti street is an opaque façade that relates to neighbour buildings and establishes an window rhythm, and the second one that faces a more secluded area, a tissue with individual housing, has particlar frames on which vegetation can climb, and so, in the warm season, these frames are green and vivid. At the intersection of the two volumes is positioned a greenhouse, which can be found every two levels, and creates an important focus point in the area, a green accent, a large garden, common to all those who stay in the hotel.

A.S.E

university

The Extension for the University of Economic Studies consists of a new building meant to unite two existing volumes of the university . The site is occupied by a 19th century building, unlisted as a monument, in an advanced state of decay. It is important to preserve its image, to remind of its position, size, and especially to allow people to enjoy its architectural details that are truly valuable, yet difficult to see in the current state. The concept involves reversing space, creating a negative of what exists without losing image of the old architecture. Studies of molding techniques made on scale models of the house, and information on SMA smart materials that can

extension

store a certain fingerprint, helped the further development of the project. The proposed volume speaks of an architecture of void, in which one encounters the image of the old house. Inside the house, various cultural activities can take place. The existence of a platform in the center of it, open to the public, amplifies the sense of space. Here, one can organize temporary galleries. Inside is an area connecting both the market and the underground passage beneath the Roman Square. This space will be a venue for various activities , a confluence of culture ( University ), man (passerby) and arts ( galleries ).

Office

tower

The site of the intervention is in Bucharest, next to Dambovita River, adjoining the last sector of Basarab Bridge. The position of the building, as a vertical landmark, is on the intersection point of two major perspective axis, from the river and from the bridge. Around it, there are some small scale buildings with different functions, suitable for the area. The buildings are brought together by a green center, a park that filters people going to different target points on the site. The tower consists of 3 displaced volumes, with a common central axis. This movement generates exterior spaces, in the contact areas, bellview points at different heights where one can admire the entire city. The faรงades find their motivation in the industrial history of the sit, where there once was a bread factory. Thus, the external language consists of horizontal metal stripes, setting a certain vertical rithm. These stripes act as mediator with the city, as well as sun shades. The first 3 levels are developed horizontally in two important directions of the site. This lower part diminishes the monumental scale of the tower, and relates to the passerby at a more convenient scale.

Palace

of

Justice

Unirii Boulevard, a result of massive demolitions during socialism, is boarded by a socialist block curtain as perpetual background. Along it, next to the National Library, there is a niche that was supposed to house the Cultural Complex “Romanian Song” which only left behind abandoned facilities. Here, a masterplan is required to solve a „Justice Neighbourhood”, a philharmonic, with an urban park and service areas. From a study of neighbouring, we found wasted spaces, of unmatched value, where the relationship between built and unbuilt leaves no room for dialogue. For that, we foresaw a composition in which the void defines and exploits the full. Since the current context is one dull and lifeless, we felt the need to animate the space. The first step was to reduce the effect of stifling local Cartesianism through a new direction which creates urban trails between important points with the aid of several platforms, mainly mineral near the Justice Palace and decomposed in vegetation to the Philharmonic. By rotating the palace after the other direction, result several urban squares.

The exterior of the Justice Palace, the Philharmonic and office towers respond to the nature of the functions they house. Thus, the Philharmonic has a playful language, allowing continuity of pedestrian routes overlapping platforms, while the volume sheltering functions of Justice has a more sober language, compact and introverted. The exterior finish, of perforated panels, in which the gaps “pulsate” in different areas, ensure the unity while allowing adequate lighting. The mediator between the existing and the proposed context is a cover marking the atrium around which are developed all the functions related to Justice, as a suggestion of an inverted dome, which is revealed gradually, after entry. This canopy, unifies, while filtering the accesibility from ground floor, with the application of the act of justice (judges, Appeal Court) to the control sector (SCM, Judicial Inspection), followed by the Knowledge zone, of the Universities (INM and National School of Clerks), culminating in another type of space, the terrace,of recreation, which hosts the library and cafeteria.

Complex

structure

The project aimed to create a complex object in which the relation between form and function is no longer a dualism, but rather a sinergy aspiring towards an integral design. The purpose was redefining form as a multitude of effects and conditions, a dynamic relation which is both perceived by the viewer, and subjected to interaction. The starting point was a study of the cube and the way it can be perceived in different positions and stages. The initial proposals followed that direction, by generating different images with the aid of interior planes. These planes were defined by the faces of the cube, resulting in what seemed to be a chaotic configuration, but as a defined volume/image by its perception point. There was a question of perception itself and of the way one would interact with this structure. The perspective effect is a main factor of the project, as, beyond the satndard representation of an architectural object: views, sections, plans, it is perceived in actual soze through this perspective filter. With this in mind, the ideea that one could control these perspectives from different points in order tu create different images of the structure and of the cube itself. By speculating perspective and the technique of Anamorphosys, the aim was displayng the cube in different controled positions, on a pathway around it, so that, from different spots, one can see different images, and from one particular point, one sees the specific image of disolution in a grid, which then recomposes itself.

In-wall Storage Walking into a dorm room, either as a shy freshman who’s been taken away from his shielding nest, or a daring student, you come across a little situation, the lack of space. Four people see themselves forced to share a few square meters. From clothes, to books, intruments, materials, and other more or less private things, all of these look for a little corner to make their own. A corner that becomes so personal, that it sometimes wishes it were hidden from the looks of others. Displaying on the floor, walls or desks four different personalities, load the space, making it sufocating. What if these four characters were to have their own secret door in the wall, where they could find everything they need on a daily basis, and which they could close whenever suited. What if the common, neutral space could expand, allowing any kind of creative activities? What if the flexibility of the space would allow the ocasional contamination of it with bits and pieces of every single one’s story?

Slience

table

Enjoying a pleasant moment in a dear one’s company, over a cup of fresh coffee or reading one’s favourite book, with a cup of tea nearby makes the sweet sound of silence priceless. Therefore, the everyday, costumary modern coffee table has its important role in making it a perfect moment. The very practical glass finish, easy to clean, fit into any interior style, yet rather noisy at contact, gets a completely new look and use when applied over a layer of Troldtekt accoustic material. All unwanted sounds are absorbed by it, allowing words and thoughts run freely.

ADEP

Magazine

„Atelierul de Proiectare“ is the first architectural magazine printed in the last 40 years , dedicated to students, teachers , architects and future architects from UAUIM and other faculties / universities in the field; created exclusively by students, independent, distributed for free in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest , Cluj- Napoca, Iasi , Oradea and Timisoara and followers through partners . Formed by a group of students , after awareness of gaps in terms of information that architecture students have about their college courses , exams , holidays, events , scholarships, international programs specialist , architecture and design competitions , national or international, the magazine comes to complete and improve the amount of information provided by the college, offering a broad perspective on the faculty and each profile. The magazine was launched on November 8, 2011 in the Attic of Carturesti Bookstore, on Arthur Verona street, Bucharest, and has gradually evolved through a national expansion ( in faculties and professional schools ), working with architecture firms ( promoting competitions for students), with the addition of new categories and the creation of a dedicated website ( with unconditional accessibility ). It is distributed free, printed every two months , with a 20.5 × 20.5cm format ( “A Square magazine “ ) containing a total of 70 color pages (including the cover).

„Atelierul de Proiectare” promotes Romanian cultural values , tradition in architecture , authenticity, talent , European and international openness of the future Romanian architect . It also aims to organise various events (conferences, debates, film nights, workshops, exhibitions, art, competitions). I joined the team in July 2013 as Production Artist (DTP), with the task of creating and editing the magazine layout, after participating in a competition, organized in collaboration with the company Ambient, for product and environment design that aimed to organise a dorm room for student architects in Bucharest, Timisoara or Iasi. The best 15 projects were promoted in the International Fair of Products and Systems for Interior and Exterior Decorations, Furniture and Pools, AmbientEXPO, between 18th to 21st of April 2013, at Romexpo Exhibitions Centre in Bucharest. Me and my teamate were awarded 2nd prize, by a jury and Popularity Award, granted based on the votes of the participants at the fair. On this occasion I met a group of student architects and planners, ambitious , serious and with a strong team spirit, promoting activities that bring performance in all areas of architecture and facilitate student access to quality information, in architecture and related fields.
