Dear Readers: You’ve probably already noticed that we’ve made some big changes in the 2010 Guide to Coweta-Fayette. Let me take a few lines to provide you with more information about those changes. The first thing that’ll catch your attention is that we’ve undergone a major renovation. As the magazine approached a quarter of a century, we felt that we should give the old girl a bit of a facelift. To do it right, we convinced Marilyn Haas, well known for her elegant designs and well respected in our local arts community, to do the job. Not only did we get a beautiful new look, but we also got a fresh perspective on the arts and related subjects by merging arts & expressions magazine and the Guide to Fitness & Health into the 2010 Guide to Coweta-Fayette. I’m proud of how our Print Graphics publishing team worked with Marilyn to bring about so many changes in such a short time. Thanks go out to Mike Nelson, Associate Publisher; Kathy Vogeltanz, Editor; and Jon Riley, Graphics Director for helping to make this happen. With the fresh articles and updated design we were careful not to lose one word of important Guide information and to keep the maps that have proved to be so helpful to newcomers and Realtors. This is the 23rd annual edition of the longest running publication of its kind in South Metro Atlanta. The Guide continues to be the most important resource sought out by newcomers and residents alike. Used by Visitors’ Centers, Chambers of Commerce, Realtors and residents, the Guide is referred to all year long. In fact, each month over 3,000 copies are picked up at our company-owned racks throughout Coweta and Fayette counties. We couldn’t have reached this age and level of success without the hard work and effort of our Sales Team: Neal DuPre, Mike Nelson, Adam Nelson, Marie Schlosser, Ann Soderman and Mike Simpson. Likewise, the success of any publication lies in the partnerships it has with its advertisers. Our advertisers are the best—and they deserve your patronage. Please visit them and be sure to tell them “The Guide sent me.” Let us know if there’s any other information that you’d like to see included in next year’s book. Meanwhile, visit us on the web at www.guidecowetafayette.com. Sincerely, Charlie Nelson, Publisher

nyone who ventures into Senoia is delighted by the renaissance that the town is undergoing. This year, it’s kicking into high gear and Senoia is drawing more attention than ever.
Southern Living Idea House Over the past few years, Historic Downtown Senoia has seen intense revitalization along its Main Street. Now the Historic Senoia Project is breathing even more life into the area, with an added spark since it was announced that a 2010 Southern Living Magazine Idea House is being set in the heart of it. Throngs of people are expected to visit this year—an estimated 30,000 to 40,000, in fact. Construction is underway and the Idea House is scheduled to be open to the public for tours in June 2010, with ticket proceeds benefitting The American Cancer Society Cattle Baron’s Ball 2010. “The Idea House, set in the heart of the redevelopment, is a brownstone rather than a single-family detached home,” explains Terry Pylant, a partner at the award-winning architectural firm Historical Concepts and lead on the Senoia Southern Living Idea House project. Similar to the brownstones found in Charleston, the 3,700-square-foot, 3.5-story house will feature a rooftop terrace and elevator, as well as a courtyard, small pool and cabana. HOME & STYLE: SENOIA’S SOUTHERN LIVING STYLE The interior designer for the project, selected by Southern Living, is Jamie Elliott McPherson, CKD, Allied ASID and principal of Hearth and Home Interiors of Newnan. John Bynum Custom Homes, Inc., one of the Atlanta area’s premier custom homebuilders, is also involved.
All photographs are of the Cottage Living Idea House.
“The Southern Living people are enthusiastic about the Idea House being truly connected with the historic downtown, and are intending to do more with Senoia,” continues Pylant. “What Paul and Scott have done with Historic Downtown Senoia has been a real boon. The whole project has been a catalyst for revitalizing commerce and growth in Senoia.”
Historic Senoia Project Historical Concepts has been involved in Senoia’s revitalization for some time and has worked with Historic Downtown Senoia and The Gin Property developers, Paul Lombardi and Scott Tigchelaar, on the historically accurate infill project, developing the land plan and architectural guidelines. Lombardi and Tigchelaar are the principals of Riverwood Studios, a facility located on 120 acres in Senoia that offers premier production facilities for everything from commercials and music videos to fulllength films. Some of the feature films done at Riverwood include Fried Green Tomatoes and Sweet Home Alabama. Their idea to develop The Gin Property not only brings new energy to Senoia, it also attracts more film production to the area, since Senoia becomes a working, living backdrop. “Now it’s full of excitement, but Senoia 10 | THE GUIDE 2010 | WWW.GUIDECOWETAFAYETTE.COM

HOME & STYLE: SENOIA’S SOUTHERN LIVING STYLE was a sleepy town,” says Pylant. He points out that the sleepiness is just what made Senoia ideal for the project, since it stayed frozen in time. “There are still wood frame buildings here. Most towns demolished them around the end of the 19th century to make way for updated buildings, but Senoia kept them, so there’s now a combination of brick and frame buildings on Main Street.” According to Pylant, everything is protected and it all flows together. “The Gin Property is being developed so it’s an extension of the downtown development, a natural progression of what would have happened as time passed and growth continued from Main Street onward, to connect with the area across the railroad.”
Idea House in East Park 2005
Situated in the heart of Senoia’s Historic District on the site of the former McKnight Cotton Gin, The Gin Property is an 11acre infill residential development offering unique custom homes that blend modern amenities and gracious Southern living into an historic sense of style and place, all within walking distance of downtown shops and restaurants. The residences will all be custom built with circa early 1900’s designs and a focus on green building principles. The options include period single-family houses, courtyard homes with detached garages, brownstones, live/work homes and factory lofts.
Above: Cottage Living Idea House; Below: Idea House in South Carolina
Pylant adds that the mixed-use development has the potential for a boutique hotel on one corner as well. “As we make the transition, all of it ties in with the concept,” he says. •

he current real estate market may make it more challenging to sell your home, but don’t think it’s impossible. the coweta fayette area offers a wonderful quality of life in a comfortable and convenient location. a wide variety of homes are available, from cozy condos to spacious executive retreats, so families can easily find a place to suit their tastes and budgets. the area’s many benefits draw homebuyers here. So how can you direct them to your door? the most obvious answer is to find a reliable real estate professional. you’ll want someone who knows the neighborhood and has a proven track record. Look for an agent you like and trust—and
then listen to their advice! Jeff warlick and christine Jordan are the owners of Peachtree fine Properties, LLc. they’ve sold over $102 million of real estate over their 10year history of success. according to Jeff, Broker/ owner, Realtor, Luxury Home marketing Specialist, gRi and e-Pro, open communication and attention to detail are important to a successful sale. Realtors know what they’re talking about. their livelihood is helping people like you sell homes to qualified buyers. they don’t want to waste time—yours or theirs—by listing a property at an unrealistic price or before it’s ready to be shown. christine is a Realtor, Real estate owned Specialist, Short Sale Specialist and accredited Staging Professional and gRi. She reports that clients appreciate the helpful staging techniques

real estate: sell your house in today’s market that she offers. With the help of the professional services of photographers and videographers, many clients have enjoyed quicker results and better offers on their properties. List your house at a reasonable price. The days of making a killing in the real estate market are gone. Take a hard look at what you expect from the sale of your house and then compare that number with the actual selling prices of comparable homes in your area. A good decision is going to take an objective eye and a willingness to listen to your realtor. Make sure your home is ready to show. All those little repair jobs that have sat on the honey-do list…well, now they need to get done. Don’t think any flaw is too small to fix. Very often, people looking at your house will see past the blinds to the cracked hall window—and the message they’ll get is that the homeowner didn’t care enough to repair it. Then they’ll wonder what big repairs you’ve left undone. Clear out the clutter. Entire TV shows are dedicated to this piece of advice. If you’ve watched any of the episodes, you know the dramatic difference that tidying up can make. Sell or donate what you don’t want to move, or rent a storage unit if you must—then box up and put away all the knickknacks and mementos that you consider ‘homey.’ It’s not easy, but it’s important. Prospective buyers will be impressed by your home’s large, bright rooms, and they’ll have an easier time imaging themselves living in them. “Clutter is extra stimuli that can be a distraction from your
home’s features and space, such as an easy path to walk through from room to room,” explains Christine. “If a homebuyer has to get small to walk through a space, they will feel uncomfortable and insecure and may not enter the space.” Set your stage. If you’ve
wondered whether the downstairs bathroom needs a fresh coat of paint, it does. Make sure your curb appeal is up by keeping the lawn mowed, the bushes trimmed and the windows washed. Search out any unpleasant orders and eradicate them. Jeff and Christine add this

rEal EsTaTE quick tip: when homebuyers enter your home, the natural tendency is to turn right. this should be one of your most impressive rooms. make your home memorable, and homebuyers will have a harder time passing it by. Keep it clean. from baseboards and bathtubs to the carpet and counters, everything needs to be scrubbed. if the job is too big for you, consider hiring a cleaning service. these days, buyers usually have a lot of homes to choose from, and a clean home has a very real advantage over the competition. Have it ready to show. don’t expect to sell quickly if you limit the hours your house is available. talk to your realtor about installing a lockbox so they can bring in potential buyers even when you’re not home. if you are at home during a showing, stay out of the way. you can answer questions, of course, but let your realtor do the actual job of selling. add some value. Buyers are attracted by incentives, so consider leaving the kitchen appliances or custom-made drapes. or you can cover part of the closing costs or include a decorating allowance. again, your realtor will guide you on the best ways to prompt buyers to make an offer. consider carefully and respond promptly. once you get an offer, talk it over carefully with your agent. don’t let the offer slip buy by taking too long to respond, countering too high or quibbling over details. if there’s a serious difference in the price or other requests, you’ll need to negotiate with the help of your realtor and decide
whether you and the buyer can make it work. in the current market, it helps to be realistic and stay flexible. ARTS AND LEISURE
A Growing Spotlight I
f all the world’s a stage, the Coweta Fayette area has a spectacular little spot on it. The amphitheaters bring in big name musical acts and first-rate shows are put on by local theatre companies. The glamorous Legacy Theatre in Tyrone has been bringing worldclass shows to the community since it opened in 2006. This upcoming year is especially exciting, says Legacy Theatre’s Executive Producer, Bethany Hayes Smith. She and her husband, Artistic Director Mark A. Smith, are the team that keeps the theatre going and growing. Both Bethany and Mark have a long list of professional credits in theatre companies across the country and share a love for the theatre. The Legacy Theatre’s 2010-2011 season includes: the beloved Driving Miss Daisy; Sanders Family Christmas, the sequel to Smoke on the Mountain; The Marvelous Wonderettes, filled with musical classics from the 50s and 60s; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, fresh off Broadway; and the classic Peter Pan. Beyond that, there’s the recently completed ‘Little Theatre at Legacy,’ which gives the theatre another space to use for shows and classes and to lease for events. “We converted an area that was
used as storage and now we have this beautiful cabaret theatre that’s just perfect for presenting new artists or singers, comedy shows, holding workshops, even hosting birthday parties,” Bethany says. “The wonderful thing is all this can be happening during the run of our shows, so no one has to wait for the theatre to go dark.” More room means more opportunities for performance training. The wildly successful Broadway Workshops offer eight-week sessions in all aspects of musical theatre. More than 500 families have been involved in the workshops—and they’ve been unanimously enthusiastic about the new Legacy Studios classes, reports Bethany. “We set an initial goal of 75 students and we’ve already got 150 signed up!” The semester-long, after-school Legacy Studios classes are smaller and more in-depth, giving students advanced training in musical theatre, comedy improv, playwriting, theatre dance and other aspects of performance. “There’s even a Legacy Idol for kids who want to sing solos and pop music,” Bethany adds. She stresses that several payment options are available to make tuition more affordable. The entire theatre scene has been thriving locally.

ARTS AND LEISURE: THE VISION THAT SAVED SENOIA
Paul Lombardi and Scott Tigchelaar received a revitalization award in 2009 from the State of Georgia Main Street Association for Outstanding New Construction/Infill.
F
or every creative endeavor, there’s a moment when the artist sees in his mind’s eye what doesn’t yet exist…but what could. That moment came just a few years ago to Paul Lombardi and Scott Tigchelaar after a meeting of the Senoia Downtown Development Authority. The discussion turned to a proposal to sell a central parcel of land in the historic district for development into a dollar store. Scott and Paul firmly believed this possibility would set Senoia moving in a direction that would detract from the quaint look of the town. They immediately knew that something had to be done to preserve the historic downtown,
and they were inspired to do it. Paul, the CEO of Riverwood Studios in Senoia, and Scott, Riverwood’s President, began purchasing vacant property throughout Senoia in their efforts to preserve and restore the city. Both men have purchased historic homes in the charming little town which has architecture that dates back to the turn of the 18th-19th century. With a sense of purpose, Scott and Paul purchased the Gin Property and have begun building brownstones, one of which has been selected to be the 2010 Southern Living Idea House, scheduled to open to the public in June of this year. In October 2009, Scott and Paul received an award from the State of Georgia Main Street Association for Outstanding New Construction/Infill. More recently, the local Atlanta Fox TV station ran a full five-minute interview with Paul and Scott about their successful renovation projects. The Gin Property, as well as other buildings on Senoia’s Main Street, will not only be homes and businesses, but also will be used as backdrops for film and TV projects produced through Riverwood Studios. While the activity is heating up, it’s not a new thing for actors and film crews to be spotted in the area.
Here are some of the major movies and TV series that have been filmed, at least in part, in the Coweta Fayette area. Drop Dead Diva, Lifetime TV series starring Brooke Elliott and Margaret Cho 2009 Get Low, movie starring Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray 2009 Zombieland, starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone 2009 Killers, starring Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher and Tom Selleck 2007 October Road, ABC TV series starring Bryan Greenberg and Laura Prepon 2006 Broken Bridges, movie starring Toby Keith, Kelly Preston and Burt Reynolds 2002 Sweet Home Alabama, movie starring Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas and Patrick Dempsey 1996 Andersonville, TV mini-series starring Jarrod Emick and Frederick Forrest 1995 Fluke, movie starring Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew Modine and Nancy Travis 1991-93 I’ll Fly Away, NBC TV series starring Sam Waterston and Regina Taylor 1991 Fried Green Tomatoes, movie starring Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson and Jessica Tandy 2009
Even though “Atlanta” is the filming location listed on these movies, Riverwood Studios credits include: The Greenskeeper (2002); Mama Flora’s Family (1998); The War (1994); Consenting Adults (1992); Freejack (1992); and Pet Sematary II (1992). Riverwood Studios is also the location for commercials, music videos, corporate productions and short films. Paul Lombardi is also the owner of Full Scale Effects, Hollywood’s largest physical special effects company. He currently produces effects for 24, CSI Miami, and has just completed the feature film Secretariat.

Mellow Music with Your Meal
The Coweta Fayette area has outstanding musical venues, including the Frederick Brown Jr Amphitheater in Peachtree City and The Villages Amphitheater in Fayetteville. Throughout their seasons, they offer toprated musical acts from around the country. But several local restaurants offer music with a meal throughout the year. At Georgia Shrimp Co—popularly known as ‘The Shrimp’—jazz is one of the highlights. The full menu features expertly prepared fresh seafood. And some of the finest musicians around serve up jazz, both hot and cool, in the evenings. The Shrimp’s calendar is filled with daily specials, including wine dinners, open mics, jam sessions and other musical events. Just off Newnan’s downtown square, Ten East Washington Restaurant & Tapas Bar blends Southern
hospitality with a European fine dining experience. On Friday and Saturday nights, diners relax to live musical entertainment while sipping wine and experiencing one of the best culinary experiences in the area. City Café & Bakery in Fayetteville treats customers to live music on the weekend. The contemporary, light sounds are the perfect complement to the restaurant’s German and American dishes. Along with the music, the bakery’s pastry selection entices diners to stay around and indulge themselves. On Senoia’s Main Street, Founders’ Restaurant features American fare—steak, seafood and pasta— with a Southern flair. The upscale diner features soft piano jazz at the front stage on select nights. •

oping along green meadows on a welltrained steed under a clear blue sky—it may sound like something out of a fantasy novel, but it’s actually how some local people spend their days. There are a surprising amount of horse farms and riding stables in the Coweta Fayette area; most are tucked away in quiet pockets, however, and can be easily overlooked. Local riders participate in disciplines such as Hunter/Jumper, Eventing, Dressage, Foxhunting and Western Riding. Some of the stables that represent these disciplines are: Hunter/Jumper—Quail Ridge Farm, Windy Oaks Farm, Meadow Wood Farm, Rock House Riding Center, Elder’s Mill Equestrian Center and River Birch. Eventing—Wooden Horse Stables and Wayfarer Eventing. Dressage—Merichase Farm, Echo Lane Farm and Camelot. Foxhunting—Bear Creek and Ramsay Farm. Western—Cedar Ridge. What makes Coweta and Fayette counties so attractive for owning and riding horses? One reason is location, according to Payne Nash of Quail Ridge Farm in Moreland. “This area tends to be an undiscovered gem in the metro Atlanta area,” he says. “We still have fairly large tracts of land here, along with easy access to the interstates and close proximity to major equine
activity centers—Aiken, SC and Ocala, FL as well as a number of excellent facilities within the metro area. For example, Chateau Elan and the Georgia International Horse Park, both super facilities for showing, are under two hours away.” Wendy Livingston of Windy Oaks Farm adds that it’s great to be among a large community of horse enthusiasts here. “For those who like to show, we have the newly established Southern Hunter Jumper of Georgia (SHJG) Association that has formed to offer several schooling-level shows yearly all within a very close proximity.” For Brittany Jones Sommers, the area’s family atmosphere is a major part of the attraction. Brittany and fellow trainers Suzanne Jones and Nancy Greene have been part of Meadow Wood Farm in Sharpsburg for more than 20 years. “One of our goals at Meadow Wood is to have families—parents and children—plan a day together, whether they’re all riding or watching a family member ride.” Meadow Wood Farm, established by Suzanne over 20 years ago, welcomes riders of all ages and disciplines of the equestrian sport. The facility produces many talented riders and teaches students the fundamentals and responsibilities of being a true equestrian and horse lover.

ANIMAL NATURE “The horse community in this area has grown over the past years, which is wonderful to see,” continues Brittany. “My family has been a part of the Fayette and Coweta horse world since the late 1970s when we moved into the Fayette community.” Windy Oaks Farm welcomed its first horse in 1980, but it wasn’t until 2005 that they opened their doors to the public. In that relatively short time, they’ve built a very successful English-riding program. “In the early years, we were a breeding farm with only our own, personal horses. Now we have many families who enjoy our 60acre farm in the middle of Fayette County,” Wendy says. She’s been riding in the area for over 30 years and remembers Glenloch Stables, once located in the middle of Peachtree City where the soccer fields now lie. As development nudges horse farms further out, Windy Oaks Farm, on Ebenezer Road just south of Hwy 54, remains one of the farms closest farms to Peachtree City. Payne confirms that many of the stables and farms in the area have been around for a number of years, particularly in the Smokey Road area. Farms such as Rock House Riding Center have been
doing business as both a riding center and a boarding barn for 20 years or more. “Other farms have faced more and more subdivisions encroaching on their farmland,” he continues. “Unfortunately, that’s both a blessing and a curse. If the farm is a boarding/lesson facility, it might get new clients. However, it can also increase liability to both the horses and the individuals living in the subdivisions. Still, for the most part, they seem to coexist well.”
Quail Ridge has been in operation since December 2001, seven years at its present location. Payne explains that their personal farm is over 20 years old and was originally build as a racehorse stable. “When we moved here from Senoia in 2003, our veterinarian told that a horse belonging to one of our boarders had actually been foaled at our barn and was (unknowingly by us) being boarded in the very stall that she was foaled in several years earlier.”

f you doubt that people in Coweta and Fayette love their pets, just look at how many services are available for animals. You can find everything from firstrate veterinary care and boarding to doggie spas and gift items. Beau Tye’s Pet Spa & Collectibles is an upscale salon that carries fun merchandise and all-natural pet food. Puppy Tubs offers fullservice grooming and a B&B Pet Resort. And Wags to Whiskers is a pet boutique, salon and ‘barkery’ where pet owners can pick up custom-made beds or freshly baked peanut butter bones for their dogs. Camp Mimi is a local favorite for pups and people. Pets enjoy the best of care, whether they’re there for Day Camp or boarding. Located in Senoia, Camp Mimi is set on eight secure, wooded acres
with a new 8,000 square foot indoor facility that’s completely climate controlled. The Doggie Day Camp room and boarding suites are roomy and cage-free. Camp Mimi only accepts 20 dogs per day at Day Camp, and there are plenty of loving staff members to supervise. The camp is designed so large dogs are comfortable and happy with plenty of room to roam and play—and swim in a bone-shaped pool. One of the biggest draws at Camp Mimi is the staff, and the fact that owner Mimi Ptacek lives right on site; she’s there day and night. Mimi has a degree in Veterinary Technology and has loved and worked with animals all her life. Wherever you live in the Coweta Fayette area, you’ll find several veterinary offices nearby.
Crossroads Animal Hospital and Coweta Animal Hospital are just two of the facilities in Newnan. In Peachtree City, there’s Braelinn Village Animal Hospital and Peachtree City Animal Clinic, among others. Fayetteville choices include Cat Care of Fayette and Fayette Veterinary Medical Center. In October 2008, Fayette Veterinary Medical Center opened its new 8,300 square-foot medical and surgical facility. There’s emergency care, a complete laboratory, grooming, boarding and more available. Even though the center is new, the practice boasts over 50 years of experience in veterinary medicine. Fayette Veterinary Medical Center was born when Huntington Creek Animal Hospital and LaFayette Center Animal Hospital merged. Owner and chief of staff Michael Younker, DVM, leads a dedicated team of veterinarians and staff members that provides the best care possible. •

the directory’s clear, bright cover gives readers a clue to the overall message. it’s positive and packed with articles that offer advice on improving sales, running an effective meeting, choosing appropriate business insurance and more. there’s plenty of important area information, too. Readers find everything from a brief fayette county history and education statistics to local accommodation listings and contact info for government offices. the main purpose of the chamber directory is the best reason to be in it and to pick it up—to connect with member businesses. at the back of the publication, there are listings of all the fayette chamber’s members, both alphabetical and by category, along with contact information. the directory makes it easy for local businesses to “find it in fayette” so their dollars stimulate the area’s economy, and that’s good for everyone. “we encourage members to keep our directory handy— at home, at the office, even in the car—as a ready source for whatever they might need,” says fayette chamber President Virginia gibbs. “we also offer ways for businesses to gain exposure at fayettechamber.org.” •

he health of residents of Coweta and Fayette counties is well guarded with the extensive medical facilities and services in the area. Two award-winning hospitals anchor the medical services—Piedmont Fayette Hospital and Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Among its many awards, Piedmont Fayette Hospital has repeatedly been named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals and Most Wired for delivering quality patient care. Piedmont Newnan Hospital was most recently named runner-up in the “Small Hospital of the Year” category by the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals and in 2009, Piedmont Newnan Hospital was named to the Georgia Hospital Association’s (GHA) Presidential Honor Roll to recognize hospitals throughout the state for meeting quality benchmarks with core measures. The much-anticipated for groundbreaking Piedmont Fayette’s Cancer Center was held in November 2009. In addition to radiation oncology services, the Center will offer diagnostics, treatment and support for patients’ through the cancer journey with a unique interdisciplinary approach for the whole patient— medically, emotionally and socially. The Cancer Center
will be located on the hospital campus and will have a healing garden, the Cole Rainbow Garden, set adjacent to the Center. Some of the big news at Piedmont Newnan Hospital is the renovations to the Women’s Services department, including decorated tile flooring as well as updates to patient rooms, the nursery and nurses’ station. Tammy Norbeck, RN, MSN and director of Piedmont Newnan Women’s Services, says: “These renovations will help us take excellent care of our patients today while we plan for our future Women’s Services floor in the replacement facility.” Also new is the Piedmont Outpatient Center, located at the Summit Healthplex on Highway 34 East. The fullydigital center has on-site radiologists and provides CT scans, diagnostic X-ray, ultrasound, digital mammography and DEXA scans and more. In addition to the hospitals, there are clinics and specialists nearby, ready to help with whatever tests or treatments you require. Piedmont Physicians Group has 11 primary care offices throughout Coweta and Fayette counties, including Newnan, Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Senoia and Palmetto. Recently, James C. New Laser Technology
Used by only 5% of dentists in the US, this new technology is virtually painless and promotes healing by disinfecting the tooth while cleaning the cavity. It also eliminates conventional stitches and heals gums faster, when gum surgery is needed.
• The Wand
This new computerized anesthetic device eliminates the conventional needle and replaces it with a comfortable way of numbing the gum surface and the tooth itself.

Digital Imaging Technology
New technology lets you see your new smile before beginning your smile makeover.

Shrenna Clifton, DDS Dr. Shrenna Clifton loves to share smiles. When patients see the dramatic results that are achieved at The Peachtree Smile & Laser Center, they can’t help smiling, often with tears of joy in their eyes. And that’s just the reaction Dr. Clifton loves! She uses an artist’s touch to bring out the natural beauty of someone’s smile, whether choosing the right tooth color to complement skin tone or meticulously shaping a temporary crown. Dr. Clifton was one of only 10 women in the 1982 Emory University class of dental students. By staying current with all the latest techniques and equipment available to cosmetic dentists, she keeps her office at the cutting edge. Peachtree Smile Center offers an array of services that includes porcelain veneers, LUMINEERS® and Invisalign® invisible braces for adults. The spa-like atmosphere soothes and relaxes patients. “We believe that getting a beautiful smile should be a beautiful experience,” explains Dr. Clifton. “One of the most recent innovations is a new phase of laser dentistry where many cavities are restored without drilling or painful injections.” Her skill has received plenty of recognition. Dr. Clifton was included in the Consumers’ Research Council of America’s Guide to America’s Top Dentists and has been voted one of Atlanta’s top cosmetic dentists by Atlanta Magazine and her peers. www.guidecowetafayette.com | THE GUIDE 2010 | 53

GET GOING AND GET STRONG!
E
very day is a new beginning. That’s something that rings true for everyone, and it’s something to remember once you make the commitment to get fit. Seniors may think it’s too late, but nothing can be further from the truth. In fact, it may surprise you to learn that a fit, active 70-year-old can be as strong as an unfit 30-year-old. Even if you’re dealing with health challenges like arthritis, there are exercise programs that can get you more active and help lessen your discomfort. Of course, it’s important to talk with your physician about your plans to exercise. Together you can find a workout that won’t strain you or cause complications. It’s recommended that seniors start their exercise programs slowly and build up their strength and endurance over time. Find something you enjoy doing, whether it’s walking or tennis. If you have several favorite activities, that’s fantastic! Cross-training, or engaging in a variety of exercises throughout the week, is a great way to achieve your fitness goals. It’s a good idea to include some aerobic, stretching and strength training
activities in your routine. •Aerobic workouts strengthen the heart and help with weight loss—walking, running, dancing, bicycling. • Stretching exercises, like yoga, improve balance and flexibility—yoga, tai chi, Pilates. • Strength training builds muscle tone and strengthens bones—weight lifting, push-ups, sit-ups. World Gym—Fayette offers programs specifically designed for older adults. SilverSneakers® fitness classes are held at all three locations. The strength and conditioning workouts guide participants through exercises that focus on strength, flexibility, mobility, range of motion, balance, agility and coordination to improve activities for daily living. At World Gym—Hwy 54, SilverSplash® is available as well. It’s a water-based exercise program that’s part of SilverSneakers® and is designed for nonimpact joint issues like arthritis, but includes some cardio, too. There’s also a class called Arthritis & Fibromyalgia Aquatics, which is a low- to mediumintensity workout that allows members to exercise at their own pace.

Wesley Woods was founded in 1954 by leaders of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church and Emory University.
Seniors who live in retirement communities and assisted living communities can take advantage of the programs available for them. Adults 55 and over who live at Towne Club of Peachtree City have an exercise and fitness center available to them, as well as a resort-style pool and putting green. Ashley Glen Assisted Living in Peachtree City has a community volunteer come in twice a week and work with residents as they go through a variety of movement exercises. At Wesley Woods of Newnan-Peachtree City, seniors can choose from a full schedule of fitness activities. “We have a fitness room with equipment that our residents are welcome to use at any time, says Candice Bryant, Wesley Woods’ Activity Director. “And we offer fitness classes through the week. On
Mondays and Wednesdays, programs are offered by Georgia Rehabilitation as well as by the Activities Department; on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Travis Self of FITT Warehouse directs workouts at Wesley Woods. Peggy Biddle, Activities Director at Heritage of Peachtree reports that the Sittercise for Seniors exercise program they use is so popular that they have to keep moving furniture out of the room to accommodate everyone who wants to participate. “The residents can’t wait for it to get started, Peggy says, “but we don’t dare begin too early or we get scolded by the folks who come in on time! For seniors who want a more advanced class, Heritage of Peachtree also offers a ‘Pump It Up’ program that incorporates equipment and concentrates on muscle development. www.guidecowetafayette.com | THE GUIDE 2010 | 55

high quality of education is one of the biggest reasons families settle in Fayette and Coweta counties. The award-winning school systems are among the highest rated in the state. And that’s not all—there are also excellent private schools, pre-schools, university programs and continuing education throughout the area. The Fayette County School System covers Brooks, Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Tyrone and Woolsey; the communities of Newnan, Sharpsburg, Thomas Crossroads, Senoia, Moreland, Grantville, Turin and Haralson are served by the Coweta County School System. Both school systems show test scores above the national average and have been recognized repeatedly for their standards and achievements. All 28 of the Fayette County School System schools met the AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) requirements in 2009. AYP, Adequate Yearly Progress, measures year-to-year student achievement and is a cornerstone of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Melinda Berry-Dreisbach of the Fayette County Board of Education points out that “All of Fayette’s schools have made AYP each of the six years since the assessment was implemented.” In October 2009, Coweta County Board of
Education received a report card that showed all 27 schools achieving AYP for 2008-09. Superintendent Blake Bass noted that the school system as a whole exceeded every standard set out by No Child Left Behind. There are a variety of private schools here, including Montessori and parochial, that offer parents the opportunity to take advantage of excellent academic programs. Counterpane School is one of the choices. A philosophically Montessori, creatively bent, ethnically diverse and strictly college preparatory school founded in 1974, Counterpane matriculated its first students to college in 1991. All the graduates have enjoyed acceptance to four-year colleges or universities. According to Counterpane director Brenda Erickson, students get to know themselves well at Counterpane, developing self-awareness, an intellectual perspective, and a creative base required for our increasingly global society. “Whether the student is three years old, nine years old, or eighteen years old, his or her academic opportunities are seasoned with personal, artistic expression,” she says. “Weaving, papermaking, primitive clay making and firing, composing music, writing and directing plays, painting, photography, sculpting—the list is as varied as the students

EDUCATION themselves.” Counterpane Students are involved in the service organizations YouthAct and Interact, and the students sponsor the Counterpane Golf Classic each year to raise funds for literacy efforts locally and globally through their outreach program, Souns. As one student says, “We are a little school, but we make a big difference.” Families in Coweta, Fayette and surrounding areas enjoy the outstanding educational opportunities afforded by the Heritage School. The independent, co-educational, college preparatory, non-sectarian day school, Heritage students from three years of age through graduation from high school. The Heritage School’s mission is to develop the mind in preparation for college and later life, to develop the body through competition and teamwork, to develop the spirit through selfawareness and growth, and to develop camaraderie through shared experience. Teachers and staff members recognize the
unique strengths and needs of every child and work with those assets to create enthusiasm for learning. “We value family, an intimate learning environment, and selfrespect,” says Amy Riley, Director of Admissions at The Heritage School. “We see ourselves as stewards of human potential and take great pride in the ethos of our graduates,” she adds. Schools for children who learn differently are also found here. The Bedford School, an accredited private school located in Fairburn, is dedicated to serving children with specific learning disabilities in grades one through nine. Bedford teachers employ multi-sensory instruction and research-based teaching methods that allow students to maximize their potential. The student to faculty ratio at Bedford is seven to one, and students excel through the challenging academic curriculum and extra-curricular activities. education: Lifelong learning a 5-week day camp held on Bedford’s beautiful 46-acre campus where students can improve their academic skills and enjoy recreational activities like swimming and team games. There are many other private schools here, including Landmark Christian in Peachtree City, Trinity Christian in Sharpsburg, Our Lady of Victory in Tyrone and Carolyn Barron Montessori in Newnan. A wide range of preschools are also in the area, so kids can get a good start early on. Some students may require the services of professional tutoring. Sylvia of Progressive Tutoring of America reports that many people consider them a ‘solution center’ since their programs address the cognitive processes critical to learning and retention. “We’re proud to offer the critically acclaimed, scientifically

based Orton-Gillingham and Lindamood-Bell programs,” she says. The programs engage all the learning pathways (visual, auditory, tactile & kinesthetic) and are designed to develop the cognitive functions needed for success in phonics, reading fluency, spelling, reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, math, memory and interpretive thinking. “We’re the only supplemental education provider in Fayette County offering the OrtonGillingham and LindamoodBell® programs,” Sylvia adds, “and we’re proud to help people of all ages and abilities learn at their own pace.”

Residents don’t have to travel far to continue their education and achieve university degrees. There’s top-quality higher education just beyond your doorstep. GMC Community College, a Liberal Arts Junior College located on the Fairburn Educational Complex, is only about a mile and a half from the school’s previous site. “We make it convenient for members of our community to get a high quality education right here,” says Debbie Condon, Director of Georgia Military College-Atlanta. “It’s part of our continued commitment to offer a good education close to home— and we invite everyone to come and see our new campus.” Phase One of the new complex is now complete with two classroom buildings, an administration building and two retail buildings housing a restaurant and coffee shop. GMC provides all the tools and support systems students need to become successful, Debbie explains. There are daytime, evening and weekend classes available, and students
have the opportunity to take advantage of free tutoring and remediation classes. In addition, Student Services provides assistance in financial aid, career planning, academic advising and counseling. GMC even leases textbooks to students to help them save money. In January 2008, Clayton State University opened its Fayette County campus in Peachtree City. More than 1,000 students have completed courses at Clayton State University—Fayette, choosing among the undergraduate, MBA and continuing education classes offered. Clayton State University’s Clayton County campus is not too distant, either. Over 6,000 students attend and choose among six masters degree programs and over 30 baccalaureate degree programs. Located in Newnan, the Central Educational Center (CEC), a nationally recognized model charter school is a joint venture among local businesses, the Coweta County School System and West Central Technical College. The charter school offers career-based academic programs ranging from graphic design to computer programming, nursing to automotive engineering, and culinary arts to business management. CEC’s curriculum is based on college, technical school and career-based requirements, and is updated as needed by industry professionals and local business partnerships. The University of West Georgia has a satellite campus in Newnan, where students have the opportunity to earn several degrees, including Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Masters degrees in Early Childhood Education, Middle Grades Education, Special Education, Educational Leadership and Business Administration. •

Scott’s Book Store, The Vintage Flea Maison & Décor, Two Sisters Knitting Nook and Heritage Quilts & Fabrics are just a few of the other downtown Newnan shops worth visiting. Some of the larger shopping centers in the area include Newnan Pavilion and Ashley Park. WORSHIP
A Community With Choice
Contemporary Service at First Baptist Church of Peachtree City
O
ne of the ďŹ rst things to impress newcomers and visitors are the many places of worship found in Coweta and Fayette counties. There’s a wide variety of worship styles available here, from traditional
services in small churches with mature congregations to large, energetic services that feature contemporary
music and casual attire. Some local churches also offer services in a multitude of languages. A full range of religions are represented, including Baptist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopal, Jewish, Greek Orthodox, Islam and Latter Day Saints, to name a few; there are also quite a few nondenominational churches here. Most of the groups reach into the community through public service projects and by offering activities for members and non-members, like those at the Bridge Community Center in Peachtree City. 80 | THE GUIDE 2010 | WWW.GUIDECOWETAFAYETTE.COM
