through volunteerism. When first given the opportunity, DeCesare initially rejected the invitation. Over time, another co-founder of Everloop.com convinced her otherwise. “When I was getting on the plane, I remember thinking, ‘What am I doing?’” DeCesare recalled. According to Beeney, no one ever grew suspicious of a false identity. “We were amazed by the quality and caliber of the equipment they had and the amount of crew– the 30 people– that accompanied them,” she said. “They seemed legit and ethical.” DeCesare was invited to help build a memorial garden for the Alonso Family, who lost their son and brother Christian in a tragic accident. She became deeply moved by the entire experience while standing in the place where that tragedy had occurred. “These people are such beautiful individuals, and I got to spend the day with them,” she said. Over the week, she and Beeney became incredibly close.

Freeway collision ends with fatal results Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officers responded to the southbound 710 Freeway, south of 6th Street, regarding a traffic collision that resulted in the death of a male adult passenger on Monday, June 25, at approximately 12:45am. The preliminary investigation revealed that a gray 1996 Acura Integra was traveling in the number-one traffic lane. The vehicle struck the east curb, below the 6th Street overpass, and veered across traffic lanes to the west side of the freeway. The passenger side of the vehicle struck a freeway sign and a palm tree, located on the west side of the freeway, before coming to a stop. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced the 19-year-old male passenger deceased at

the scene. The 18-year-old female driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Once released from the hospital, she was booked for felony impaired driving and vehicular manslaughter. Currently, she is being held at the Long Beach City Jail on $100,000 bail. The identities of both driver and passenger, residents of Los Angeles, are being withheld until next of kin has been notified. During the investigation, southbound 710 Freeway traffic was diverted for several hours from approximately 1am to 7:15am. Those with information regarding this incident are asked to call (562) 5707355. Anonymous tips may be submitted via text or web by visiting tipsoft.com.

DeCesare described her as warm and engaging. “She wanted to make sure that every single person who has lost somebody out there has someone they can count on,” she added. “We are lucky there are people like that in this world.” DeCesare revealed herself as a wealthy entrepreneur on Friday, Oct. 14, 2011. “When she stepped forward, it was beyond amazing, beyond belief,” Beeney said. Although none of New Hope’s crew had seen the show, Beeney remembered viewing its trailer three years prior. She thought, “Wow, finally a reality show of substance,” and she wondered how New Hope could one day become one of the featured nonprofit organizations. With the generous donation, New Hope was able to update their website, so now the public can easily learn about their programs, read past “Stories of Hope,” view upcoming events, and more. The monetary gift has also allowed the nonprofit to hire David Leonard, a previous grief program participator, as the director of development and marketing. The donation has

additionally made economic struggles in general easier to weather. New Hope will always relieve grieving people and help them find hope and healing as they travel on their own personal journeys of grief, according to Beeney. “It’s so rewarding because you can help people who came to you all numb in their grief and not knowing which way to turn,” Beeney said. “And you offer them grief support where our trained facilitators are beside you, and 900 people in our groups share their hearts, being transparent and vulnerable. You watch them transform out of the bondage of grief into the freedom to grieve.” DeCesare was able to bring volunteerism into her own life. She now volunteers at her church and is currently involved as a board member in an organization fighting pediatric cancer. New Hope will host a public premiere party from 7pm to 9pm on July 8 at Gaslamp Restaurant, 6251 E. Pacific Coast Highway.

The Long Beach Gas and Oil Department (LBGO) is alerting residents about recent reports of persons falsely representing themselves as utility workers to burglarize houses, claiming that a gas meter needs to be replaced and inquiring when the resident will be not be home. LBGO routinely performs gas meter exchanges throughout the cities of Long Beach and Signal Hill, according to LBGO, who indicates that with all

meter work, customer contact is made either in person by a uniformed employee or through an LBGO form that is left in a prominent location on the property. The form provides a contact number for questions and concerns about the work scheduled. LBGO employees who make contact with a resident for any type of meter work or inspection is identifiable by their LBGO uniform and is required, upon request, to show a City-issued identifica-

the woman moved back. Pascual, Reyes and several other speakers stressed that one of the challenges of trying to rescue elderly victims of abuse or self-neglect is that many of them are used to being strong and independent. They do not want to admit that they need help, and they are ashamed to tell anyone that someone has harmed them in some way. “Your suspicion is all that is necessary for APS to investigate,” Pascual said. “Please make sure you report anything you think might be elder abuse or neglect to APS or to another agency that is charged with protecting the elderly. We would rather have the opportunity to investigate than to take the chance of allowing a dangerous situation to continue.” Several speakers noted that investigators of alleged elder abuse are not permitted to reveal the identity of the person making the report. Kathleen Kosche, LCSW, of the Memorial Counseling Association, stressed that abuse takes a very serious toll on seniors. She explained that everyone, young or old, feels terrible when they are abused, but there are resiliency issues with the elderly. “Their ability to bounce back is not as strong as it used to be,” she said. “Elderly people often feel helpless and hopeless.” The Long Beach Elder Abuse Prevention Team– the coordinator of the symposium– made flyers and other printed materials available to attendees. One flyer contains a list of signs and symptoms of elder abuse. They include: unexplained physical injuries; agitation, trembling, confusion or disorientation; emotional distress like crying and/or

depression; withdrawnness; lack of emotion; self-destructive behavior; social and physical isolation; unexplained loss of financial independence or control; and a home in disarray, lacking basic necessities. The hand-out also urges readers to be concerned if: an older adult appears fearful of a caregiver or family members; an older adult appears reluctant to respond when questioned; a caregiver or family member seeks to prevent an elder from interacting privately with a concerned party; an older adult, family member or caregiver gives conflicting accounts of an incident; or a caregiver or family member is indifferent or angry towards an elder and refuses to provide necessary assistance. • According to a recent National Institute of Justice Study, almost 11 percent of people ages 60 and older (5.7 million) faced some form of elder abuse in the past year. A 2009 study estimated that 14.1 percent of noninstitutionalized older adults nationwide had experienced some form of elder abuse in the past year. • According to a MetLife study (2009), approximately $2.6 billion a year is lost by elders because of financial abuse. However, it is estimated that only one in 100 cases of financial abuse is ever reported.

• Financial abuse represents 15 to 45 percent of cases reported to Los Angeles County Adult Protective Services (APS). AARP estimates that $40 million is lost annually to sweepstakes fraud targeting seniors.

• Approximately one out of five of all types of elder abuse cases is reported. • According to recent APS statistics, as people are living longer and aging in place, elder abuse is increasing. For example, in 2006 there were 104,000 reports of elder abuse in California, a 34percent increase since 2000. Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley (2009) revealed that reported cases doubled from 2005 to 2009 in LA County. Elder abuse is projected to increase as the large number of Baby Boomers ages.
