California Heights United Methodist Church and Children’s Center, 3759 Orange Ave., is inviting children through fifth grade to an Easter-egg hunt that will include crafts, games, face-painting, a visit with the Easter Bunny, and more.

Easter Sunday activities at the historic First Congregational Church of Long Beach, 241 Cedar Ave., will begin with a breakfast at 9am, followed by a children’s Easter-egg hunt in the church courtyard. The Easter service itself will begin at 10am and will include two anthems by the 50-member sanctuary choir as well as special music by the youth bell choir. Rev. Jerry Stinson and Rev. Libby Tigner will each offer meditations on how the biblical Easter stories might be understood in the context of liberal Christianity. Following the service, there will be a bubble celebration for children and a brunch in Patterson Hall. Everyone is welcome at all of the day’s activities. The First Congregational Church is located at the corner of Third Street and Cedar in downtown Long Beach. ----------------------------------------MORE INFORMATION firstchurchlb.org (562) 436-2256

Located on the south side of the park, the new garden features a wildflower meadow, native plants and drought-tolerant shrubs. Paths of permeable concrete wind throughout, with decorative rocks and benches made of recycled material for seating. As part of the City’s ongoing efforts to provide active opportunities, four new pieces of outdoor

fitness equipment for adults have been installed. The LifeTrail Advanced Wellness System, designed by Playworld Systems, was developed in conjunction with a leading gerontology and kinesiology specialist for older adults desiring an active lifestyle. The three-sided stations are ADA compatible and promote functional fitness with exercises that enhance strength and flexibility. ß

it’s Your Time… To Live an American Dream

Life is known to throw a few breaking curve balls, which isn’t the easiest pitch to hit. And, it’s always unexpected. But when it’s thrown your way, you do your best to connect. My wife and I had to handle that hard breaking curveball a few years ago when we were asked to help raise our two teenage grandsons living in Summerlin-Las Vegas, Nevada. They needed some extra family support in a new positive environment that offered a family friendly community, great schools, and a solid standard of living. Remember that curve ball? Well, that family support meant my wife and I would need to temporarily relocate from our current home in Long Beach, CA to the Summerlin-Las Vegas area. Our next quest was to locate a home in a family community that offered that positive environment needed for our grandsons, and maybe a future retirement home. We worked with a number of realtors and they directed us to the same location, Summerlin, Nevada. We didn’t realize it at the time, but Summerlin’s

master plan was developed by The Howard Hughes Corporation, near the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area, to offer families a variety of land uses for residential, commercial, recreational, educational, and cultural diversity. A note of interest is that Summerlin is named for Howard Hughes’ Grandmother, Jean Amelia Summerlin. Remember that temporary move? It’s lasted ten years, the grandsons have graduated from college, and moved on to their own adventures. While Summerlin continues to exceed all of its goals and is a great place to live (It continues to rank among the top ten best-selling communities in the country 19 years after the development began), my wife and I made the tough

decision to permanently relocate back to Long Beach, CA. This now leaves us with another one of those curves balls. It’s time for someone else to live the American Dream and enjoy all of the amenities that Summerlin offers. After ten years, it’s easy to say that the community of Summerlin offers families and retirees more choices for how and where to live than any other Las Vegas master-planned community. All you need to do is to take a look out your backyard, and you’re see the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area consisting of nearly 20,000 acres of hiking trails, rock climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking, road biking, and picnic areas. If this isn’t enough, you have access to more than 150 miles of trails connecting to 150 neighborhood

and village parks, along with nine world class premier golf courses with stunning views of mountain landscapes. Included in this master-community are more educational choices than any other Las Vegas community. There are 12 public schools, 13 private schools, and 7 child care facilities. In addition, Summerlin has four institutions of higher education including the renowned Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts Las Vegas. Still not enough? There are 13 houses of worship where diversity is the rule rather than the exception. To complement all of these community services, there are year round performances in the Hills Center amphitheater, Donald W. Reynolds Cultural Center (home of the Nevada Ballet Theatre), and Performing Arts Center. One of the commitments in the early development of the community was to have a healthy community which is why there is nine Health and Fitness centers to choose from, and three major medical facilities including the Summerlin Hospital Medical Center and Nevada Cancer Institute. Imagine, living in a comfortable and safe community environment, and having it at a very affordable price. Everyone wants a good deal, and there are plenty of great deals in Summerlin, Nevada. But, we’re offering what we think is one of the very best great deals in the area for either a family or retiree.
