Wishing all our members a wonderful holiday season and a New Year of health and happiness. Thank you for being a valued part of your Spokane Club community. Your Board of Trustees 2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Winter 2019

Dear Members, This issue of Signals welcomes the holiday season and all the wonderful Club traditions that come with this special time of year. From Tom and Jerry’s in the Library on November 27 to Christmas Eve Buffet in the Georgian on December 24, to the New Year, New You Wellness Challenge that kicks off January 9, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and celebrate this season! In the spirit of the holidays, and with a grateful heart, I’d like to thank each and every one of our members. You join for many reasons, but you stay for one: the depth of friendships forged, and the quality of life that comes from those friendships and your Club services and staff. Some friendships are forged in the Conditioning Rooms, where members encourage each other to keep going in the face of both life’s wins and challenges. Some of those friendships are forged in the Deli where members gather to share family news, discuss world views, and have a coffee together. Great friendships are forged on our tennis courts where players both challenge and encourage each other. And our Club kids learn how to swim together, play together, paint together and grow together in our wonderful Childcare and Aquatics departments. The holidays are times that we especially count our blessings. The fact is that our blessings are with us every day. Sometimes it just takes a deep breath and a genuine smile to remember those blessings. May we all take that minute and make that time to count our blessings each day. For us, the Staff and Management of the Spokane Club, the blessing is you, our members. Wishing you all health, happiness, prosperity and peace in the New Year and always,

Wedding Magic at the Club!

By Kate Spencer

Photography by Michael Finny

W

eddings at the Club have been a tradition for many, many generations of Spokane couples. What’s the secret to Club weddings? A classically beautiful setting, a professional Wedding Planner on site, a dedicated Catering team, a talented and creative Chef and culinary team and . . . an ample supply of magic. Yes, magic. Weddings are the closest that most of us will get to being the star in our very own movie, with our very own true love. So, magic—and a lot of perfect moves from our catering team—make Club weddings unforgettably wonderful. “There are a number of great venues in Spokane, but the Spokane Club has the best wedding package,” says Licett Garbe, a recent Spokane Club bride. “Not only is the Club reasonably priced, it has a gorgeous ballroom, professional and friendly staff, and great food. They made our wedding their main focus that day. So many other venues we went to had other events planned on the same day,

or we were limited with time. At Spokane Club, we had the entire day from morning to night without any rush or stress.” Delivering a stress-free/low stress wedding takes tenacious attention to detail, dedicated, communicative teamwork, decades of on-the-ground experience, and the ability to listen, really listen, to what couples need and want. And yes, more magic. “The Club staff was absolutely amazing,” says Licett. “They all went above and beyond to cater to us and our entire party. We are still getting great feedback from our family, stating how staff was so friendly and attentive to their needs.” “They helped us answer all or our questions while planning our wedding and we knew everything was going to be taken care of by the Club’s wonderful staff. This eliminated the stress of planning a wedding.” These positive feelings from our couples are absolutely mutual when it comes to the staff and their all-in engagement in

helping make a dream come true. Nobody knows more about making those dreams come true than Jackie Kiley, who, in addition to her Wedding Planner role, is also the Director of Catering at the Club. Jackie is devoted to customer service and innately understands how to deliver that service consistently and gracefully. “Licett and Daniel are wonderful people,” says Jackie. “They are both so gracious and such fun to work with. They make a terrific couple and I truly loved spending time with them.” When asked which wedding moments were Licett’s very favorites, she had no hesitation in her answer. “Our walk down the aisle as a married couple, our moment alone right after our ceremony and dancing with all our family and friends are those very special moments. We had a wonderful time!” Some matches are made in heaven and some matches are made in earning the trust of those who entrust you with the biggest day of their life. Great relationships come from both of these types of matches, spreading goodwill all around. “The Spokane Club staff is absolutely amazing,” says Licett. “They went above and beyond to cater to us and our entire party. We are still getting great feedback from our family stating how staff was so friendly and attentive to their needs. They helped us navigate through the whole journey and were very professional and reliable.” Great weddings, and all the other special occasions of life and living, take time, attention and dedication. And of course, a generous helping of magic, too. Cheers to life’s best moments! To learn more about making your next celebration extra special, email Jackie Kiley at JKiley@spokane club.org. www.spokaneclub.org | Winter 2019 | 5

3 Steps to Living in the Present

By Kate Spencer

W

hen we are little kids, both loved and herded by grownups, we daydream of being bigger, like maybe eight years old, and having a fast bike. When we are teens, we long to be semi-grownups and have a job and a fast car. If we get a job, we may envy the better jobs our friends have or the colleges they got into. If we go to college, we may think having a graduate degree will be our ticket to mastering the universe, or at least our patch of it. If we have kids, we may sometimes envy the freedom of people who don’t have them. If we 6 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Winter 2019

don’t have kids, we may feel there’s a hole in our life that the imaginary child might have filled just perfectly. By the time that we are 35, 55 or 75, we may spend days longing for our long-gone, herding parents and the life that passed in a New York minute while we waited for the better thing that was just beyond our reach, that great good thing that would finally make us happy and whole. We were more than willing to wait for it, even if it took a lifetime. The thing is, waiting to fully live until the right set of circumstances comes along is like waiting for a pie

to cook without ever turning on the oven. It takes some heat to get the gold, on a pie or in a life. Living in the present and appreciating it for the gift that it is, even if the current circumstances are gut wrenching, is the surest path to a kind of steady, sustainable joy. If your life is touched by illness or loss, as all lives are at some point, acknowledging the circumstances without being immobilized or defined by them is a path of grace. I saw this grace firsthand in my father in law.

• FIND A HERO

My father in law was a man who never let his circumstances define his hope. Affectionately known as VR, he was young Marlon Brandohandsome, with the discipline of a Marine and the heart of a Golden Retriever. A self-made man who literally fell in love with the girl next door, he worked as hard in his rose garden as he did in his career. Nothing could stop him. At age 29, with a young family of four, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Around that same time, his wife got Hepatitis and was bedbound for over a year. VR worked two full-time jobs while becoming a willing test subject for experimental drugs that might hold promise for the MS cure. He remained that willing subject for decades. VR was the first person I knew who was a passionate advocate not just for himself, but for something greater than himself and for generations of people he would never know. Find that person in your life and watch them very closely. What you’ll learn will change both your appreciation of the present and the possibility of the future.

• WALK BESIDE THEM

VR knew how to fix stuff like car engines, broken pipes, leaking ceilings, clogged plumbing, dead batteries and squeaky doors. He could, and would, remodel his own house regularly, and once built an addition to the house simply because he fell in love with orchids.

Having grown up mostly without a father, walking beside a man who could do all these things was like getting a Doctorate in real life skills. That he did all of these things while living with MS was incredible to me and because of his influence, there’s not much I won’t take on in terms of hard labor projects. As his MS became increasingly challenging, I drove VR to many of his doctor appointments. I watched his spine go from almost straight, to deeply crooked, to nearly completely bent sideways. I watched his pain level go from tolerable to off-thecharts wrenching. Still, he kept on walking, often joking, and rarely complaining without good cause. He was neither a saint, nor a martyr. He was a fully realized, heroic human being. In walking beside him, I got to see exactly what that kind of courage and tenacity looks like. Find a heroic person you can walk beside, both for their sake and your own.

• DON’T WAIT

Two mornings before his death, VR was still hopeful about being discharged from the nursing facility he had been admitted to when the MS and complications from heart disease became debilitating. That morning, he felt good but, always dapper, worried that he didn’t have the right clothes for discharge. He asked me what might be in his hospital room closet. I took out all of his pants, shirts, shoes and socks, holding up different outfit options.

We talked about his “getaway clothes” for almost an hour. At the end of our fashion planning, he smiled at me and said, “My mind is good and my spirit is willing. I know I could keep on going. All I need is a new body. But I don’t think I’m going to get one. Do you?” I wavered a second between responding truthfully or with some spiritual platitude. But we were old friends and depended on the truth between us. “Probably not, but I wish with everything I have that it could be different.” We sat in silence for a while, holding hands until he drifted off to sleep. He was right that day, of course. He didn’t get a new body or a cure for his well-used one. But in all those years that he lived with a debilitating disease, he didn’t put his life on hold because of it. He lived with his disease without being defined by it. And in that character defining choice, he lived richly, deeply and fully until his very last breath. What about you? Are you putting off the life you have, for the life you hope for? Don’t wait. Your one and only isn’t a house, a career, or even a soulmate. Your one and only is your life, right now, just as it is. Live it with as much courage, laughter, generosity and thankfulness as you can muster. Beautiful eternities can be lived in a single moment. Don’t wait.

Coeur d’Alene Regenerative Medicine: Innovative Treatment for Joint and Spine Pain Two prominent physicians have joined forces to open a new clinic using FDA-cleared techniques.

O

Dr. Joanne Halbrecht and Dr. Jeffrey J. Larson

ne thing you can say about living in Spokane: there’s never a lack of interesting things to do. Whether you favor indoor or outdoor pursuits, you have unlimited choices: from a leisurely stroll through Riverfront Park, a meetup with friends at your favorite restaurant, or skiing down the slopes at Mt. Spokane. Yes, we are an active bunch of folks, but sometimes we overdo it a bit—and our bodies pay the price. Favoring a sore knee or lower back pain can really put a crimp in our lifestyle. Ouch! While conventional medical care can require months of rehab and a slow recovery, a breakthrough treatment known as regenerative medicine is changing the way doctors help their patients heal. 20 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Winter 2019

Fortunately for Spokanites, the physician “powerhouses” at Coeur d’Alene Regenerative Medicine are at the leading edge of regenerative medicine, using the patient’s own body to heal itself. Dr. Jeffrey J. Larson and Dr. Joanne Halbrecht utilize FDA-compliant techniques to treat musculoskeletal pain. Dr. Halbrecht is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, founder of Coeur d’Alene Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and an internationally known authority on regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy. She has performed hundreds of regenerative medicine procedures and has appeared on CBS television’s American Health Front, lectured nationally, published in peer-reviewed journals and is sought out by patients

and colleagues for her knowledge and insight on regenerative medicine. Dr. Larson is a board-certified neurosurgeon and founder and medical director of Coeur d’Alene Spine and Brain, PLLC (CDA Spine), an independent comprehensive neurosurgery clinic. He has authored over 60 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, abstracts, and presentations and has won national research awards. We recently sat down with Dr. Halbrecht and Dr. Larson to learn more about their groundbreaking work and their new clinic. What sparked your interest in regenerative medicine? Dr. Larson: My personal interest was sparked by a chronic knee problem I aggravated while training for the Boston Marathon. I was looking for something short of a knee replacement to avoid further damage to my cartilage and ligaments. Regenerative medicine has the potential to reduce or eliminate pain, but also to heal the injury using your own cells. I immediately thought of using these methods in treating my back pain patients. Dr. Halbrecht: As an orthopedic surgeon with an undergraduate degree in engineering, I have always embraced cutting-edge technology—in this case, cell or tissue therapy. A general term for using these cells or tissue from the human body for orthopedic treatments is “orthobiologic.” When studies first appeared in the literature showing the benefits of orthobiologics or cell therapy for orthopedic pathology, I was intrigued and began researching the topic. I believe that biologics are truly the future of medicine. The results and potentials of regenerative medicine are amazing. I foresee using stem cells for

acute injuries where they are injected to the site of injury to accelerate healing and prevent future problems such as arthritis. Who can benefit the most from regenerative medicine treatment? Dr. Larson: Patients who have lower back pain from degenerative disc disease or degenerative facet joints may be excellent candidates for regenerative medicine techniques instead of undergoing steroid injections or surgery. Dr. Halbrecht: Patients with arthritis, rotator cuff tears, meniscus tears and tendonitis may benefit from regenerative medicine. The key to success combines a detailed physical examination, accurate diagnosis with focused physical therapy and orthobiologics. You use fat tissue from the patient’s own body. Why is fat used? Dr. Halbrecht: Early orthobiologic methods relied on getting cells from bone marrow, but harvesting it can be very painful and often requires sedation. The procedure for harvesting fat is relatively painless and does not require sedation. We use an FDA-cleared device

(Paid Advertorial)

who had joint infections after they received umbilical cord blood injections.

for processing the fat. The procedure is done in the office using local anesthetic and only takes about an hour. Dr. Larson: Many patients have an abundant amount of excess fat. Even the most-fit patients would be happy to offer up their love handles. Studies have shown that fat cells have up to 500 times more mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) than bone marrow, and that fat cells retain their healing properties as patients age. MSCs react to inflammation and injury and act like little drug stores, releasing proteins and growth factors that are anti-inflammatory, promote the growth of blood vessels, inhibit scar tissue formation, and manage the innate capability of tissues to regenerate. Dr. Halbrecht: The number of MSCs in bone marrow sharply declines with age, whereas the number of MSC’s in fat remains fairly constant. In addition, your own fat is safer than using umbilical or amniotic products. Many who perform injections using birth tissues have no idea how they are processed, or whether they comply with FDA regulations. The New York Times recently reported on 12 patients

Why should a patient choose CDA Regenerative Medicine? Dr. Halbrecht: We are the only regenerative medicine practice in the region with a neurosurgeon and orthopedic surgeon who each have over 25 years of experience in the conservative and surgical treatment of spine and joint pain. Together, we provide comprehensive expertise to help relieve pain and avoid steroid injections and surgery for our patients. The consumer needs to understand that clinics that are not run by a physician most often offer “amniotic or umbilical cord stem cells.” Studies show that umbilical and amniotic products have either no cells or the cells are all dead. The majority of these commercially available products have not been clinically proven to be effective in treating arthritis, rotator cuff, ligament or meniscus tears. Dr. Larson: It is best to seek treatment by an orthopedic or neurosurgeon who has extensive knowledge of the conservative and surgical treatment for musculoskeletal problems and is experienced in regenerative medicine. Ultimately, we work together with each patient to decide which treatment is best. Interested in more information about cell therapy? Contact: CDA Regenerative Medicine 3320 N. Meet Evi Ohman Fitness Instructor

Meet Jill Hogan Fitness Instructor As a lifelong resident of Spokane and fifteen year Spokane Club devotee, I can safely say this place is nothing short of home! Fitness didn’t come into my life until I was well into my twenty’s. I was a conditioning room attendant at the Club, and Molly Benzel talked me into leading my first cycle class! The foothold it took led me into teaching. Nothing warms my heart more and ignites my coaching spirit more than having someone come up to me and say I made a difference to them in their day, their view in fitness and their outlook on life. Others success inspires me to step my game up! On a personal note, I’m a busy single mother of two young boys who have spent their entire lives at the Club, between other instructors holding them so I could take a class, to swim lessons, summer camps, bingo nights in the library….this place is definitely our forever place!!

Hi! I’m Evi and I have been in the fitness industry and instructing ZUMBA classes at the Spokane Club for 11 years. My love for all things fitness began at an early age through dance, cheerleading and track. My passion for helping others is my driving force. I love the ability to train people of various fitness levels, ages and backgrounds through a variety of formats, but my true love is DANCE! Throughout the years I have always considered The Spokane Club my home. As a busy married mother of three active kids my family has enjoyed so many wonderful activities at the club! Over the years my family has attended Mother’s Day brunch, Easter egg hunts, swimming, basketball and now we train as a family! The Spokane Club is a special place that has something for everyone! This is our community and the members are family!

Our business is turning them into realities. We do this by helping our clients plan and manage their financial resources. Fee-only. For a complimentary consultation or brochure, call: Greer Gibson Bacon, CFP® (509) 838-4175 or (888) 864-8827 assetplanning.com

Callah receiving 2nd place in G18 Advanced

Jacob showing he’s still #1

S

pokane Club Juniors kept the hardware here as Jacob Huppin won the Boys 18 Advanced singles while Callah Pretti brought home 2nd place in the Girls 18 Advanced singles. This USTA sanctioned Junior event had 109 participants ranging in age from 11-18. Tournament Director Jeff Urie was extremely pleased in not only the number of players but in the caliber of tennis on display. And even more importantly the level of sportsmanship was awesome! Spokane Club members Sophia Dibble and Mia Tombari battled each other in a dramatic first round highlighted by each player having match points during an outstanding 3rd set tie-break. Sophia, playing in her first USTA event, walked away the winner 11-9 but both girls were true champions as they congratulated each other on a well fought match! The Spokane Club is producing more and more tournament level players as evidenced by this last tourney. If you missed the opportunity to compete in or watch this event, the Spokane Club is hosting the Spokane Winter Classic, Dec 14-16, 2019. Enter online via the USTA web site by Friday, Dec 7.

2019 Spokane Club Member’s Only Tennis Tourney November means it’s time for the biggest annual tennis event at the Club: The 2019 Spokane Club Members tournament. Social tennis meets tournament match ups is the best way to describe the tourney! Food, entry gifts and lots of second guessing others play is a hallmark tradition during the 2-weeks of competition. In 2018, 150 members battled for the annual bragging rights and we expect even more going for it this year. Member Tod Whitman has once again stepped up to sponsor this event which means great participation and food offerings for all! We start the event with Singles and Mixed Doubles in week one (Nov 14-17) and follow it up with Gender Doubles the next week (Nov 21-23). This allows members to play multiple events each week without wearing down too much! Sign up now on-line at USTA.com under non-sanctioned tournaments or contact Jeff at jurie@spokaneclub.org or (509) 535-3554. Entry deadline is Nov 8 for Singles and Mixed Doubles and Nov 15 for Gender Doubles. See you on the courts! Nov 14-17; Singles/Mixed Doubles Nov 21-23; Gender Doubles

January 2020 Spokane Invitational Sponsored by South Perry Pizza

Mxd 8.0: Dewey Kim, Bryce Borland, Tom Griner, Cat Voigt, Greg Voigt, Kellee Bates, Disa Vradenburg (Alyssa Fitzgerald)

Mixed 8.0 and 9.0 Teams Moving on Up! Yakima was the site of the 18-and-over mixed doubles regional play-offs October 11-13 and our Spokane Club teams walked away winning the top two divisions. Captained by Disa Vradenburg, the 8.0 team went 4-1 while the 9.0 team captained by Annelise Anderson went 4-0. Our 7.0 team captained by Laura Temby also went 4-1 but due to tie break rules finished in 2nd place! The 8.0 and 9.0 teams have now advanced to the PNW Sectionals being held next July in Sun River. I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence that all of our teams had such great success while women captained, but they definitely set a strong precedence.

Great tennis, awesome pizza and a super fun crowd! These words best describe the Spokane Invitational Tennis Tournament over the past 6 years. We would like to think the buzz around the tournament is driven by the tennis, but it could actually be the Saturday lunch service, South Perry Pizza has provided the last 6 years. South Perry owners and Spokane Club members, John and Paula Siok have been a great addition to our line-up of event sponsors and we appreciate all they do to make our event memorable! This tourney kicks off USTA competition in Eastern Washington by drawing players from all over the PNW and Montana! Second in size to our members-only tourney, this event lets everyone know the tennis you will be bringing in 2020. On-line sign-ups cover Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles over a wide range of playing abilities ensuring everyone has a place in this event. Look for more details in your Club email.

We Definitely Met the Zags Again! On Sept 26, Thursday night sports at the Valley Club featured more than NFL football, it featured the 2019/20 Gonzaga University Men’s Tennis team! This 2nd annual “Meet The Zags” mixer had every one of the 52 participants grinning ear-to-to ear at some point during the night. The 12 Zag athletes put on a showcase of talent then teamed with over thirty-eight of our Club members in a doubles mixer. Lots of great tennis was had and more importantly this event provided a great chance for Spokane Club members to connect with one of the premier programs in our city. After the on-court activity, everyone went upstairs to grab a dinner and to learn more about the players and coaches. Coach Jonas Piibor and Assist Coach Cesar Vargas have made this event a priority in efforts to build a fan base as well as to educate their players on the importance of giving back to the community. We hope to continue this super positive relationship for years to come. Look for future chances to jump on the court with top level college players!

NEW!

US Master’s Swim Program

What is Masters swimming? That seems to be the question of those who have heard about the new program. The goal of the program is to provide structure and coaching to swimmers who are interested in focus and direction for their work-outs. The coaching is tailored to swimmers’ needs and desires, while providing a weekly structure and schedule. The work-outs are designed to accommodate swimmers with a vast range of swimming backgrounds and goals. While Masters is not designed as a “learn to swim” program, it is designed to help people learn to swim better: smarter, stronger, faster, longer, and more efficiently. Anyone can learn to be a better swimmer. Along with specific coaching through work-outs, there are other opportunities that open up after joining the Masters group. One of these is the ability to compete in Masters swimming competitions. Other potential beneficiaries are those athletes training for triathlons. Not every swimmer is interested in competition, either at Masters swim meets or triathlons. There are still numerous benefits of joining the group that have nothing to do with competition. These include increased fitness, endurance, and overall well-being. Not to mention, the program allows for socialization on the wall between sets – a great way to get to know other members! You can also direct any questions you have to the Aquatics staff at 459-4571 x512. Mon/Wed/Fri 5:30 – 6:45 am; Downtown Pool; Free

Meet the New Masters Swim Coach Rob Heath is a certified USMS Level 3 coach, former Equipment Chair for Pacific Masters Swimming, and a member of the USMS National Championship Committee for the past 3 years. His belief that US Masters swimming is a vital link to promote health and joy for all adults is one of the main factors that drive his enthusiasm on deck, and his love for volunteer work with the organization. 34 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Winter 2019

Rob was a personal trainer and fitness instructor for nearly 30 years. His experience in those fields has given him a great advantage in creating enjoyable, effective workouts that not only prepare his swimmers for competition, but to also reach their fitness and/or training goals. His workouts are usually geared towards multiple audiences: fitness, recreational, and competitive swimmers. For 12 years, Rob has been a delegate to the annual USAS convention (US Aquatic Sports: USA swimming, water polo, synchro, diving and Masters) through his previous LMSC, Pacific Masters. His national swimming connections run deep. In addition to his coaching experience, Rob holds, or has held, local, national, and world records in his events. He continues to hold national Top Ten times in his specialty events, and has been a National Champion in his favorite event, the 50 Backstroke. Rob’s passion for the sport of swimming will be evident to all, whether he is on deck coaching, swimming in National and World Championships, or hanging out with his team during social events. Join us in welcoming Coach Rob Heath!
