Member Engagement By Nancy Vorhees, Chairwoman vorheen@inhs.org

O

ur son Kev was recently married to a wonderful young woman, Kayla Driscoll. It was a beautiful wedding held at the Gonzaga University Chapel and my husband, Ken and I are beyond thrilled to see the future unfold for this special couple. As proud parents, we wanted the out-of-town wedding guests to stay at a place where we knew they would feel welcomed, comfortable and at home. That’s why we chose the Spokane Club hotel. The wedding guests loved everything about the Club! From the Front Desk

As Club members we are so fortunate to have such great amenities like the hotel, our in-house restaurant and Bar at Burgundy’s, our many, multi-purpose meeting rooms, the gorgeous Georgian Room and the Athletics facilities. 2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | March/April 2016

staff ’s warm greetings and guidance, to the Burgundy’s staff attentive and friendly service, everything—the staff, the food, the bar, the swimming pool— was outstanding. Everyone felt happy and right at home. (Even when a small fire broke out in one of the offices on the basement floor necessitating a brief evacuation of the building, spirits weren’t dampened and neither was the hospitality or professionalism of our Club staff.) As Club members we are so fortunate to have such great amenities like the hotel, our in-house restaurant and Bar at Burgundy’s, our many, multi-purpose meeting rooms, the gorgeous Georgian Room and the Athletics facilities. What’s more, we can share many of these amenities with friends, family and business colleagues who travel to Spokane for work, play or . . . weddings! Did you know that as a Club member you can host out-of-town guests in the Club hotel? Not only that, but your guests can dine in Burgundy’s and even work out in our wonderful Athletics facilities. And what a great way to introduce out-of-town business colleagues and employment candidates to all that Spokane has to offer!

The Club Hotel staff, led by Hospitality Director, Ryan Lloyd, can walk you through the process, arrange for guests passes and more. For more information, call the Front Desk at 838-8511. These wonderful amenities that the Club offers for all the big moments of our lives are nicely balanced by the Club services that make our everyday lives a little more enjoyable and a lot less stressful. A short list of these includes: • The Club’s courtesy vehicle will drive you anywhere within 1.5 miles of the downtown Clubhouse—and pick you up—for free. • Saturday parking in the North lot is just $1 per entry. • Anytime you spend $15 or more in Burgundy’s, the Club will validate your parking. Just present your Burgundy’s receipt to the Front Desk. • You can skip the trip to the drycleaner by dropping off your items at the Club’s Front Desk. Club hospitality staff will send it out for you and when it’s ready, you can pick it up right at the Front Desk. • You can get a 1-hour consultation with a personal trainer for free. These benefits and more not only add value to our Club membership, but value to our lives. I know that’s true for Ken and me. And I’m delighted to report that Kev and Kayla feel the same way too!

L

ight illuminates everything it touches and some people are beacons of light. Bernie Brown is one of the brightest. A Club member since 1997, Bernie’s commitment to health and fitness brings her to the Athletics facility regularly where she swims, sweats and lifts. It’s the lifting part that makes Bernie so remarkable, because what she lifts best is people’s spirits. Much of that lifting is done in the Women’s Locker Room with Bernie’s many Gym Sisters. “I am so blessed to have Bernie as my friend,” says member Cathy Sutherland. “She has the wonderful, unique ability to make people feel special, and she makes me feel special every time I see her. Considerate, kind, gentle and loving—that’s Bernie Brown!”

A natural goodwill ambassador, Bernie’s genuine care for others and welcoming, inclusive nature represents Club spirit at its best. In Bernie’s world, there is always enough good to share in abundance. “Getting to know Bernie Brown over the last four years is one of the best things about my move to Spokane,” says

“After a conversation with Bernie, you feel like the most wonderful, fabulous person. That is truly what Bernie is—a gentle, sweet, beautiful individual. Her smile lights up a room.”

member Katherine Widing. “There is a glow of warmth and happiness whenever she is around.” Member Terri Caferro echoes these feelings. “After a conversation with Bernie, you feel like the most wonderful, fabulous person. That is truly what Bernie is—a gentle, sweet, beautiful individual. Her smile lights up a room.” Member Debbie Andrews, who has worked out alongside Bernie in Club Bootcamps and the big boot camp of life, says “Every woman needs a friend like Bernie in her life. She showers you with encouraging and complimentary words, that give you no choice but to boost your day. She is a blessing to others and to me, and the world is a brighter place because of her.” True to her nature, Bernie doesn’t do any of these things for attention, praise or compliments. She shines because that’s what light does. And for that, we are all grateful and happier. Member Christine Welch sums up the gift of Bernie’s friendship perfectly. “Most friendships begin with a compliment, encouraging words lifting a heavy heart, rejoicing in a grateful spirit, an optimistic attitude and a heart full of love and joy. The biggest and best compliment I ever received was the gift of Bernie’s friendship. Knowing her makes me the best me.” Thanks to Cathy Sutherland for spearheading this spotlight on Bernie. If you have a member friend who embodies what you believe to be the best of Club Spirit, please contact Kate Spencer at kspencer@spokaneclub.org or call 459-4535.

Meet Stacie Harper, CEO

By Kate Spencer, Communications Director People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget the way you made them feel.

T

hese simple words of wisdom from the late poet and author Maya Angelou, serve as daily inspiration to Stacie Harper, the Spokane Club’s new CEO, and notably, the first woman to hold the highest staff leadership role in the Club’s 126-year history. Making people feel welcomed, heard, valued and worthwhile is part of her DNA and radiates in her open smile, which she shares generously. 4 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | March/April 2016

“I live by those words,” says Stacie. “I find them to be true in all relationships, and my leadership style has been molded from them. I am very approachable and collaborative by nature, which I think both staff and members will appreciate. I believe the greatest success happens from the inclusion of many perspectives when there is ownership in the outcome. Employees will work harder, do better, and be better when they are provided

a positive, productive environment, as well as the feeling of being valued and appreciated.” Inspiring a sense of worth in others and serving a common good comes naturally to Stacie—and she has always dreamed big. As a girl, she dreamed of becoming President of the United States or an Olympic Gold medalist. (And given her high energy, on some days she probably dreamed of achieving those goals simultaneously.) Though she didn’t realize those particular girlhood gaols, her adult dreams,

both personal and professional, have been realized many times over. She was drawn to sales and hospitality early in her career and experienced consistent and robust growth in her profession. Most recently, as the former Director of Global Sales--West Coast for Choice Hotels International, Stacie had the revenue responsibility of $250M with a 12% year-over-year growth from 20142015. Prior to that position, she served as VP of Sales and Catering for Red Lion Hotels Corporation in Spokane and was also Red Lion’s National Director of Sales. Earlier positions included Director of Sales and Marketing for Doubletree Hotel in Spokane When asked what excites her most about her new leadership role at the Club, she replies with her signature enthusiasm. “There really isn’t anything that doesn’t excite me about leading this great organization. I believe that the Spokane Club needs to be re-introduced to Spokane. We need others to see how being a part of this special community can have an immediate, positive influence in their lives.” Stacie knows a lot about inspirational influences and the greatest of those in her personal life are her family. Born in Missoula, Montana, Stacie’s family moved frequently over the course of her father’s career. Stacie credits the continual challenge of these new environments in honing her personal adaptability and sense of adventure, along with a respect and appreciation for the differences of others. When the family settled in Spokane during Stacie’s middle school years, she felt she had finally found home. “It was almost an immediate connection that was created by the friendly people and atmosphere that I experienced here in Spokane.”

Stacie and her husband Kelvin at the U of W game

Stacie and her father, Fred And life just got sweeter from then on. She grew up, fell in love, married the man of her dreams and together, they raised their beautiful daughter. “My family is everything to me. I am very happily married to whom I believe to be the funniest man in the world, Kelvin. His love, support, devotion, and unconditional acceptance of who I am to my core, helps me to be the best version of myself. I feel enormously blessed to have such an amazing life partner. Our beautiful, talented, brilliant, and funny (which she gets from her father) daughter, Kacie Miche is studying for her Master’s degree in Trauma Psychology. Her goal is to one day help Veterans with PTSD and

Stacie Harper, the Club’s new CEO, being inteviewed by the amazing Kjerstin Bell on Good Day Spokane. other conditions. Balancing a career and family life is not easy, but achieving it is more rewarding than anything I could ever have dreamed of when I was a girl.” Though a cherished member of Stacie’s family, her mother, Vickie, passed away five years ago, her immediate and extended family continues to grow, adding new limbs to the family tree. Stacie’s father, Fred, remarried and he and his wife, Wanda, split their time between Spokane and Arizona. Stacie’s two brothers, Scott and Chris, and their families live in Spokane and are very close, particularly Stacie’s sister-in-law, Renee, who is also Stacie’s best friend. Beloved nieces and nephews Kendall, Gabe, Jordan and Tayler round out this devoted family. Passionate sports fans and outdoor enthusiasts, the family stays fit and healthy by doing what comes naturally to them: creating and celebrating the best times of their lives together. 6 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | March/April 2016

A new kind of family awaits Stacie at the Club and she is thrilled to forge bonds and help build a bright future here, recognizing both the challenges and the strengths. “The greatest challenge will certainly be the age of the Downtown clubhouse facility. I will need to get my arms wrapped around the immediate and long-term needs of the building and then prioritize based on how those needs will positively impact our members and future members. I see the greatest opportunity as the service level we provide to our members. It will be my goal to have every member and potential member feel special every time they walk into the Club. After all, that’s the reason we are all here!” Look for the Management Team Strategic Plan in your May/June Signals, coming in late April.

The CEO Search Committee agreed that our new CEO needed to be someone who could create a fresh new vision for the future of the Spokane Club. That person also needed the experience, organizational skills and energy to execute that vision under the direction of the Board. Stacie Harper has the perfect skill set to move the Spokane Club to new heights. Her depth of experience in management, marketing, and sales in the food, beverage and hospitality industry, powered by her enthusiasm and energy, is exactly what the Club needs. Jeff Johnson, SIOR, CCIM President Black Commercial, Inc I’m so excited for the Spokane Club, given Stacie Harper’s executive presence. Stacie is dynamic, gracious, strategic, and energetic. Each of these qualities will invigorate the vitality of our membership, our staff, and our facilities. We are headed for a very bright future at the Spokane Club with Stacie Harper leading the way. MARCH MADNESS

CHARITY BRACKET

BUSTER AUCTION & Celebrity Sports Talk

MARCH 14 • 5 – 8 PM

SPOKANE CLUB LIBRARY This year’s Charity Bracket Buster is shaping up to be our best yet! The Buster is an annual auction sponsored by the Spokane Club that raises funds for local charities by auctioning off the field of 64 teams during the NCAA’s March Madness playoffs.

So far, the charities that have confirmed, or are in the works, include: Big Table Camp STIX Cancer Can’t Embrace Washington Family of Faith Community Church Supporters of these charities will be at the Buster, bidding for NCAA teams on behalf of their charities for the chance to win big. Anyone attending the Buster can bid on the NCAA teams; groups of bidders must select their Designated Bidder. The winning Bidder assigns their team to the local charity of their choice. Monies raised are held in an 8 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | March/April 2016

Funds are then dispersed to the winning charities. 100% of the funds raise go to the winning charities. If any of the charities listed above resonate with you, you are invited to bid on their behalf at the Buster too. Or, bring forward another charity

you would like to see represented and start building a bidding team of your own! To register for the Buster, go online to SpokaneClub.org. If you have questions or need help with anything, email kspencer@ spokaneclub.org or call 459-4535.

Bracket Buster FAQs How does the Charity Bracket Buster auction work? Anyone attending the Buster can bid on the teams; groups of bidders must select their Designated Bidder. The winning Bidder assigns their team to the local charity of their choice. Monies raised are held in an account by the Spokane Club until the NCAA tournament winners are announced. Funds are then dispersed to the winning charities. 100% of the funds raised go to the winning charities. Is the event open to the public? The event is open to Spokane Club members, their guests, and friends of the Club. Members can register online; non-members can register by emailing Kate at kspencer@spokaneclub.org. Who typically bids at this event? Bidders come from a variety of streams which include: Board members of non-profits, staff members of non-profits, donors to non-profits or those who have a special connection to a non-profit, either as a volunteer or as someone who has received assistance from the non-profit. Generally, these folks also follow basketball to some small (or enormous) degree and have their favorites in that arena too. Does the Club maintain a list of charities that I can get my favorite charity on for the Buster? NO, the Club does not maintain a list. It is the members and their guests who support the charities, not the Club itself. The Club provides a venue for the charity auction to occur.

2015 biggest winner! Dick Boysen, Executive Director, Spokane Guild School

How do I get my favorite charity involved? It’s simple. Gather a group of friends and colleagues who share a passion for a local charity. Come to the Buster, choose the basketball team(s) you want to bid on, select your Designated Bidder and name your charity. IF your group wins the team(s) they bid on and IF those team(s) win in either of the two designated categories, your charity is a winner. There can be winners in either or both of these two categories—Seeds 9-16 and Final Four.

the top seeds, 1-8, the pot is split in the following ways: 50% to the National Championship winning team, 25% to the team that loses the title game and 12.5% each to the first two losers in the final four. For the teams seeded 9-16, the pool is split as follows: Each win of your team earns a return of 5% of this second pool. After all payouts of the second pot, any remaining funds go to the team or teams that advance the furthest. Seeds 9-16 are eligible for the Final Four pot created by seeds 1-8.

Does every charity win something? No, just as every team who makes it to the NCAA tournament doesn’t win the tournament, not every charity wins money at the Buster. Historically, teams seeded 1-8 (32 teams) have the best chance of winning the tournament. Money raised from the field of 64 is split into two pools, one consisting of all seeds 1-8; and the second pool made up of seeds 9-16. For the pool derived from

MANAGING

BACK

PAIN

Posture is a must, without the appropriate curves in the spine and maintaining those curves with adequate posture the back cannot do it’s job effectively. Hip mobility is also important, when the hips tighten up we put more stress on the back to achieve the ranges of motion the hips used to give us. The entire body is linked. Weakness, poor flexibility or an imbalance in one place can lead to injury and breakdown in another. Don’t let back pain slow you down this year, join Cyndi Slizza and me for an educational presentation followed by practical exercise application (see listing below). Get back in the gym, and make 2016 your year!

By Christine Cronin, PT

I

f you have never had back pain, odds are you will. The World Health Organization reports that in a lifetime 60-70% of people will suffer from back pain. Back pain can range from minor to severe, and is one of the most common reasons for missed work and lost productivity. The good news is, most back pain can be managed non-surgically; the bad news, is if you’ve had it once, you’re more likely to have it again. The back itself is incredibly complex, and made up of multiple small joints called vertebral segments that each contribute to mobility. The spine is composed of three regions: the cervical, thoracic and lumbar. The spinal column sits atop the sacrum and coccyx (tail bone) which form a joint with the pelvis called the sacroiliac joint (SI). Problems in the back don’t always present as back pain. Some back injuries cause pain down the leg and even into the foot. Each segment of the spine is separated by a disc which helps with shock absorption. After a 22 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | March/April 2016

trauma, the disc can bulge or rupture and place pressure on nerves that come out of the spine. Pressure on a nerve can cause pain, weakness, numbness or tingling anywhere the nerve travels. The nerves of the low back innervate the lower half of the body, so even weakness in your foot, or tingling in your toes could be linked to the back. Due to the complexities of the back, it’s not always easy to come up with a clear diagnosis. Each case of back pain can be slightly different. Still, there are things we know can help decrease pain and reduce injury: core strength, posture and hip mobility. Core strength is critical, the ability to stabilize around the back is key.

Problems in the back don’t always present as back pain. Some back injuries cause pain down the leg and even into the foot.

Managing Back Pain with U-District Presented by Christine Cronin, DPT, SCS,CSCS and Cyndi Slizza, CPT, E-RYT Learn more about the connection between a healthy back, appropriate flexibility, core and hip strength from Christine Cronin, our on-site Physical Therapist and a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist from U-District, Downtown. Immediately following the seminar, Cyndi Slizza, a Club Personal Trainer and experienced yoga teacher, will walk you through strength exercises and stretches for your back. Your Non-Member guests are welcome to join us for this important workshop on dealing with back pain! Sign up at the Sports Desk at 459-4571 or by contacting Cyndi Slizza at cslizza@ spokaneclub.org. Tuesday April 19; 11:00 am – 1:00 pm $20 for members; $40 for guests

Fitness Class Reservations Are Going Online!

M

ost of the Club’s fitness classes don’t require reservations, but for those that do, the MindBody online reservation system is a simple, user-friendly way to reserve those classes, either via the Club’s website or via the MindBody phone app . (To get the app, simply download the MindBody app to your mobile phone and search for the Spokane Club.) Best of all, you can now reserve up to a week in advance! Beginning March 1, the Club’s Athletics staff will begin collecting information from members currently participating in reserved Fitness Classes: Cycling, TRX, and select Barre Fusion and Yoga classes. The Club will enter your information into the Mind Body system and create your account, and then send you an email with your account information and instructions on how to use Mind Body. You can start using Mind Body beginning March 7th.

Class reservations will begin March 7th for the classes held at the Club during the week of March 14th. The paper reservation sheets will be removed on March 7th. Once the Club goes live with Mind Body, feel free to ask our Sport Shop team for assistance if you have any questions. The current system of clipboards and paper reservations will be eliminated and replaced with the ease and convenience of Mind Body. Moving the Club’s Fitness Class reservation system to Mind Body has many benefits for Club members. Besides the benefit of being able to reserve your spot in advance, if your reservation is waitlisted, you will automatically move into a reserved spot as soon as an opening in the class becomes available. Communication will also be made through Mind Body confirming your reservations, waitlists and cancelations.

Please note: Classes that can be reserved are marked with an asterisk on the Athletics Schedule. Members using personal training are already entered in the MindBody system.

8-week Indoor Ironman Triathlon Challenge Whether it’s the cold temperatures or a busy work schedule, sometimes life requires indoor training. Training indoors is a safe and very effective way to stay in shape during the off-season. Here’s how the Challenge works. You have 8 weeks to complete a 2.4 mile swim, 112 miles on an indoor cycle bike, 26.2 miles on a treadmill. Record your distances performed after each workout on the “Ironman Posters” you will find throughout the Club. We will provide you with swim, bike and treadmill workouts. This would be a great time to join the Master’s Swim program where you can pick up some solid tips for improving your technique in the pool. For Cycling, you’ve always got the option to take one of our Group Fitness cycle classes or use the Conditioning Room bikes. Tips for running on a treadmill. Set the elevation to one degree to compensate for the lack of wind and terrain change. Use the treadmill to simulate a hilly course by increasing the incline. This is also a good time to hone in on your form and stride. As you build a solid baseline of fitness, schedule your own race day. Jump in the pool and swim for 10 minutes, quickly transition upstairs to the cycle studio for a 30 minute ride. Your last stop is a 20 minute run on a treadmill. BOOM!! You’re on your way to becoming a tri athlete.

Indoor Cycle 101

Walking into your first cycle class can be intimidating, especially when it seems like everyone around you is already a pro. Once the music turns on and class starts, remember it’s all about you. The riders around you are focused on themselves. Indoor cycling is a highly effective cardio and strength workout. It can be intense and fast-paced but it’s a great activity for any fitness level. Its low impact and you decide how hard you want to work. One 45-minute cycle class 30 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | March/April 2016

can burn upward of 500 calories. That’s not scary, that’s awesome! The term “Spinning” is actually trademarked by Madd Dogg Athletics to identify the company’s particular type of instruction and bike model. Classes are technically called “Indoor Cycling.” Join us for this 45-minute intro to indoor cycling class. Here’s what you’ll need: Wear comfortable workout gear. (Leave the baggy sweats at home). If you have cycle shoes with SPD clips bring

them, if not regular sneakers are just fine. Water bottle and heartrate monitor if you have one. You will learn about bike fit, body positioning and riding profiles for cycling, cadence, resistance, and stretches. Sign-up at the Sports Shop or call Molly Benzel 459-4571 x502 if you have any questions. Valley: Monday, March 14; 5:30 pm Downtown: Wednesday, March 16; 5:30 pm

The 2016 USTA tournament season officially kicked off with the Spokane Invitational Tournament held from Jan 15-17 at the Spokane Club. This annual event has become a great first stop for Pacific Northwest players looking to start piling up ranking points and to challenge their on-court skills early in the year. Over 110 competitors from Idaho, Montana, Oregon and throughout Washington played singles, doubles and mixed doubles in various skill levels. Although a little down from previous years, we were overall pleased with the number of competitors and really pleased with the level of on-court play and exceptional sportsmanship on display throughout the tournament. Matches ran at an on-time rate of over 93% which is pretty awesome when players are trying to schedule their days around the matches. For the second year running, South Perry Pizza delivered their outstanding gourmet pizzas and delicious salads to the delight of the players and spectators. This may be one of the only tournaments where competitors gained weight as they participated! Thanks again to Spokane Club members John and Paula Siok, owners of South Perry Pizza!
