or 43 years, at every age and stage of her life, Trish McFarland has called the Spokane Club home. She has raised her children, grown an illustrious and meaningful career, and celebrated some of the sweetest moments of her life within the walls of this Club, including her marriage to Pat McFarland 34 years ago. Now, as Club Chairwoman, Trish McFarland is bringing her experience as a businesswoman, civic leader, wife and mother to bear on her message to fellow Club members and the greater Spokane community: the Club is a great place to be, and to belong, for life. “I became a member of the Spokane Club 43 years ago when I married Pat 2 . McFarland! Our wedding reception was in the Georgian Room. During each step of our lives, we have enjoyed the Club in different ways and for different reasons. New Year’s Eve celebrations pre-kids fashion shows that I modeled in or commentated; swimming with our little ones; Easter Brunch with 30 family members; business lunches and dinners; hotel rooms for our daughter’s wedding, and athletics. My peak experiences have centered around family celebrations: birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and much more and all of them end up at the Spokane Club!” Trish was born in Seattle and raised in Spokane from the time she was two

years old. She is part of a large Irish Catholic family with deep roots in the Spokane community. She attributes the unconditional love from her family in giving her the confidence to get involved in the community. Yet, as large as her family or origin was, it paled in comparison to her husband Pat’s who, according to Trish “has more cousins than anyone I know!” Clearly, family is the heart of the McFarland’s lives and their happy marriage is the heart of their family. “In my personal life, I am most proud of my 34-year marriage to Pat McFarland. He stretches my brain and makes me laugh every day. He has been the biggest cheerleader in my career. And our three wonderful children—Molly, Joey and Katie—are best friends to each other and to us. I am so proud of them. And now we are the happy grandparents of Luca Joseph Quintana who is 7 adorable months old.” A dynamic community leader who is generous with her time, talent and heart, Trish is most proud of the many wonderful organizations she has been part of over the years. These include Ronald McDonald House, Gonzaga Prep, EWU, and the YWCA.

By Kate Spencer, Marketing & Communications Director

How long have you been a member of the Spokane Club and what initially attracted you to joining? I am a lifer. My parents were big tennis players so I grew up at 4th Avenue and I took swim lessons Downtown.

How has your membership evolved and what do you value most about your membership today?

Jim and his son Ben after running the CDA half marathon on Jim’s birthday this year.

Jim Branson

Senior Vice President, Director of Retail Banking Washington Trust Bank

Where were you born and raised? If not Spokane, how did you come to live in Spokane? I was born and raised in Spokane, left for college and took a job transfer back to Spokane shortly after graduation. 4 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2016

Lindsay Burdett

Operations Manager JMK & Associates

Where were you born and raised? If not Spokane, how did you come to live in Spokane? Born and raised in the Greater Spokane Region. Grew up in Medical Lake, started my first bank job at 18, went on to SFCC, then Whitworth for an HR program years later.

How long have you been a member of the Spokane Club and what initially attracted you to joining? I have been a member since early 2011. I was introduced to the Club as an Emerging Leader. I was runner up but still got awarded a trial period and was hooked. I was attracted to the networking opportunities at that time

When we first came back to Spokane, I mainly used the club for morning workouts and swim lessons for the kids. Over the years as my wife and I started playing tennis more we used 4th Avenue quite a bit. Now we use both facilities and enjoy the variety they offer.

What do you hope to contribute as a Board member? I am excited with the fresh perspective I am seeing at the Club right now and I hope to help that continue. I think I offer a unique perspective considering I have been a member pretty much my entire life and have been a very active user of both facilities over the years.

What is a little-known, fun fact about you? My wife and I are foodies!

Lindsay at the Tiger Tri in Colville. She placed first in her age group and 2nd overall female in this Olympicdistance triathlon.

in my career, but also, being an avid runner, the cross training, the gym, pool and classes sealed the deal. I joined the House Committee for a couple of terms, then moved on to the Membership Committee, and was asked to chair it last year and will continue to do so through my next term.

Staci and her family (Right to left: Staci, Anna Jo, Daniel, Emily, and Ray.)

How has your membership evolved and what do you value most about your membership today? I value the athletic side for sure, but love the social and community side too. I enjoy getting involved and meeting new people and trying things I wouldn’t do otherwise.

What do you hope to contribute as a Board member? I would like to see the Club evolve and focus on its future, bringing even greater value to existing and potential Club members. We have a lot of work to do to accomplish this. The most common question I get is “Why are you a member of the Spokane Club, what’s the value?” Which I think is a very important question we all need to ask ourselves and drill down on. What differentiates us? What makes us special?

What is a little-known, fun fact about you? I have a heart for the not-for-profit world, locally and globally. I am heading to Kenya (again) in the fall on a crusade that will be focusing on leadership and pastoral training in the villages. Along with this particular ministry, Spring of Hope International brings clean water to the people of Adiedo. We are there to help create sustainable practices, from farming to health to water. We don’t go there to DO work, we go there to help them figure out how to do the work themselves. If we do the work, it’s ours,

if we teach and show them how to have sustainable practices, they own it and continue to grow and develop and live healthier lives.

Staci Clary

Owner and Creative Director Hold On Now

Where were you born and raised? If not Spokane, how did you come to live in Spokane? Long Beach, California was where I was born, but Spokane is home since I was four years old. Our first home was in Cheney where my family opened the first Savage House Pizza Parlor. Shortly after that, my siblings were born, my father added locations to the restaurant, and we moved to Spokane. After High School graduation, I moved to Long Beach where I obtained my Associates Arts Degree and immediately following I returned home to finish at Gonzaga University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism.

How long have you been a member of the Spokane Club and what initially attracted you to joining? I have been a member of the Spokane Club since I was a young girl. Life took its twists and turns and eventually I was able to re-join the Spokane Club when I married Ray Clary. We converted his Single membership to a Couple, then with excitement, to a Family Membership. My family is attracted to the Spokane Club’s rich history, endurance and ability to survive hardship, scores of change, yet all the while maintaining beauty, pride, and character.

How has your membership evolved and what do you value most about your membership today? My Club membership changes as my family and business continue to grow. What I value most and will forever treasure are the hours, days and years spent at the Club with our children. The memories include child care activities, swim lessons and being so proud when my kids could hold their breath for nearly the entire length of the pool. As they grew, they moved into the open gym, weight lifting and utilizing the variety of www.spokaneclub.org | Fall 2016 | 5

that the Club started to offer dance classes and occasional dance events. We plunged into dancing and have never looked back, enjoying the experience of learning and sharing with other members. A few years ago, we joined with a few other members to form the Social Dancers of the Spokane Club, which now counts about 90 members on its roster. I also have appreciated serving on the Club’s House Committee, providing input to some of the Club’s decisions. As much as we enjoy the dancing, it is the friendships at the Club that I value most.

exercise classes and competitive challenges the Club offers. It is where, still today, they observe the commitment, consistency and even courage of the younger, stronger and older members modeling a healthy lifestyle.

What do you hope to contribute as a Board member? I am excited about Stacie Harper’s leadership and will support her, along with other Board members, to transform the Club into a destination that current and new members can’t live without. My participation will be positive, energetic and sincere. I am very excited for the Club’s future.

What do you hope to contribute as a Board member?

What is a little-known, fun fact about you? My sister, Leigha gave me the “Dare to Repair” book in 2002, and I am not afraid to use it. Most recently I talked my son (17 yrs. old) into helping me replace our broken dryer belt. He said, “Mom, we can’t take the dryer apart!” and I said, Daniel, “Can’t never did anything.”

Andy DeMott

Former Congressional Legislative Assistant and Engineering Manager

Where were you born and raised? If not Spokane, how did you come to live in Spokane? Most of my childhood, I lived in the small town of Plymouth, Michigan, outside of Detroit. At the age of 15, my family moved to England, and Europe became my back yard for three years. In the many years since returning to the U.S., I lived on both coasts and in between. For over 20 years, my wife Diane and I raised our family in the Puget Sound area, in the town of Poulsbo. After both kids were out of the nest, we spent 7 years in Washington, D.C. When it was time 6 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2016

Andy is an avid outdoors enthusiast and loves spending time enjoying the trails of the Great Northwest. to return to the Northwest, we chose to make Spokane our home because of its great combination of size, culture, and wonderful outdoors.

How long have you been a member of the Spokane Club and what initially attracted you to joining? Diane and I joined the Spokane Club shortly after moving to Spokane in 2011. We were attracted to the Club’s offering of both social and athletic activities. In joining the Club, we hoped and expected that we would meet interesting people and begin to form friendships. The Club has not disappointed.

How has your membership evolved and what do you value most about your membership today? Several months after we joined the Club, we were surprised and delighted

I think that the Spokane Club is poised to make some important strides. With Stacie Harper and her team at the helm, I hope to be a part of a Board focused on growing the Club as an organization that members feel is special to them; both a special place and a special community. I hope to contribute to building the sense of ownership, pride, and value that members have for the Club, ensuring that it continues to thrive in the future.

What is a little-known, fun fact about you? For the 6 years prior to retiring and moving to Spokane, I had a unique opportunity to serve as the defense legislative assistant for a congressman from Washington. During those years I was able to be a part of some initiatives that were important to the state and the nation. I also had a perspective on the national government and politics that few people get to experience.

The First 120 Days: A Progress Report By Stacie Harper, CEO

First 120 Days Positives While our challenges are great, our positives are greater. The more we dedicate ourselves to nurturing the good in our organization, the more it will thrive in all areas. Some of the key positives at the Club include:

Staff • Majority have embraced the need for change • Majority want to be part of the solution

Senior Leadership

I

recently celebrated my first 120 days of service to the Spokane Club. Those days have flown by and thanks to all of you, have felt warm and welcoming. My first four months as your CEO have also been ones of great exploration and learning for me. I want to share the commitment, challenges and positives of my discovery with you now. First, above all else, my commitment to you as your Club CEO, and that of our Senior Leadership team, is to always function with: • A high level of integrity • Transparency • The best of intentions And perhaps most importantly in a Club that highly values relationships, you have our promise that we will always listen.

First 120 Days Challenges Like all organizations, the Club has its challenges. And like all challenges, there are some key, inherent opportunities if we seize them. As your CEO, it is my commitment to seize those opportunities for the future of the Club and its members. Below are some of the most critical challenges we face in key areas.

Facility • Extreme Capital needs and severe deferred maintenance • Lack of organization and cleanliness

Lack of Leadership

• Staff: Minimal expectations/accountability in certain areas • Costs out of line; lacking in controls and lack of tools • No real-time data – only “post-results view.” Therefore, no time to react to make a difference in results.

• Talent in all areas is “off the charts” • Everyone sees opportunity and wants to make a difference

Membership

• Have fully embraced me, my team, and is very supportive • Open with their perspectives, observations, and historical references

Board

• Supportive and reasonable with their expectations With all of these factors in mind, and having spent time listening and learning the heart of the organization, I’ve worked with our Staff to develop three Key Objectives. We have already made some good progress with these objectives, but deep change doesn’t happen overnight. Just as it took time for the Club to develop its current challenges, it will take time, and resources, to overcome them. Our Key Objectives are: 1. Grow membership 2. Be the employer of choice in the greater Spokane area 3. Create a welcoming, clean, well-maintained, and organized facility www.spokaneclub.org | Fall 2016 | 7

Objective #1: Grow Membership We all know that membership is the backbone of this organization and its reason for being. Given that, it’s essential that we are easy to do business with, both in our relationships with current members and prospective members. As a member-driven club, it should always be about Member Experience. However, without a strong infrastructure there is nothing to support the full realization of our objectives. That’s why so many of the initiatives you see below are committed to building a solid infrastructure.

Initiatives completed to achieve Objective #1: • Review of staffing needs and structure. Hiring and training of 7 new Sr. Staff members (CFO, F&B, Director, Facilities Director, Human Resource Director, Executive Chef, and 2 Membership Directors). Our Leadership team is now completely staffed. • Conducted a Member Survey with creation of Action Plans to address shortfalls and opportunities, including regular review by staff and public updates. • Creation of new Policies and Procedures to ensure Member and Employee Satisfaction.

• In conjunction with our neighboring businesses, worked to relocate the Homeless population that had taken up residents on Riverside. • Creation of fiscally responsible budget with gradual revenue increases and gradual cost savings. • Creation of Departmental Business Plans in support of the overall Operating Plan. • Audio Visual offerings with the highest level of technology to meet our members’ needs. • Review of all departmental inventory, product evaluation and controls. Creation of internal committee to

address shortfalls and opportunities for improvements. • Have begun to implement new relevant programming for membership: Guest Chef events are one example. • Creation of Manager on Duty program to ensure supervisory coverage for all hours including nights and weekends • Create Daily Operational Report – purpose: real-time data to allow for timely reaction • Restructure of GL accounts 1. Smaller and leaner coding and allocation of accounts 2. More logical association 3. Clearly defined for consistency of coding and tracking • Potential restructuring of Financials, pending confirmation of accuracy • Full evaluation and scheduled installation of Jonas Integration System Software: full install targeted at the end of August. • Review and implementation of additional security cameras throughout Club with an upgrade in network and storage space – in July. • Restructuring of Membership Department for a more targeted and tailored approach. • Creation of plans to address both prospective NEW members and RETENTION of existing members. • Review and implementation of new office protocol to provide a more customer service friendly and team-oriented attitude. • Creation of 2 separate Membership Initiatives to increase membership. Target: Past members and Businesses.

Key Objective #2: Become the Employer of Choice in the Greater Spokane area Initiatives Completed to Achieve Key Objective #2:

• Commitment to creating a work environment where employees feel valued and appreciated. A person who feels appreciated will always do more than expected. • Conducted All Employee meeting to review service standards and expectations. • Conducted an Employee Survey. Created Action Plans to address shortfalls and opportunities including regular review by staff with regular updates. • Creation of Employee Recognition Program and implementation. • Full review of Benefits including rollout of new program and medical benefits Burgundy’s staff getting ready for the Hoopfest crowds!

Key Objective #3: Create a welcoming, clean, well-maintained, and organized facility. Our mission is to Be the Club we all want and deserve. Initiatives Completed to Achieve Key Objective #3

• Added support to Engineering, Housekeeping and Janitorial. • Departmental checklists for cleaning. • Cleaning and organizing is a priority in all departments.

A major initiative to complete Key Objective #3 was borrowing $400,000 from the Endowment Fund, which I announced at the Annual Meeting this year. I want to thank all of the members of the Endowment Fund for their wisdom and commitment to the Club’s future. The funds will be utilized for: • Renovation of 20 Hotel guest rooms • Upgrade of corridors • Burgundy’s refresh

Once we have completed these revitalizations, we’ll hold an Open House so all members can see the results of our labor of love. Watch for my next progress report in Signals Winter edition, and photo updates of our renovations on Club Facebook and Instagram. Together, our future is bright! Stacie

Peak Performance Dining By Kate Spencer, Editor in Chief

A

chieving peak performance— doing and being your very best— is most commonly associated with sports and athletics training but Michael Melone has a much broader view. That view is enhancing and expanding all the dining experiences at the Club. New York born and California Coast bred, Michael, the Club’s new Food and Beverage Director is a modern version of the classic Renaissance Man. An undergraduate degree in International Relations from UCLA, graduate studies in Sports Psychology at San Diego State University, and achieving Level 1 Certification in the Court of Master Sommeliers speak to the diversity of his passions and depth of his knowledge. “Restaurants are the most analogous environment to a sports team that I know,” says Michael. “Peak performance training, group dynamics, cohesion and the passion for excellence are all shared traits. I may not be able to play on the PGA or Tennis Tour, but I love being in a performance environment.” 10 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2016

Michael Melone, F&B Director Environments that have shaped Michael’s career include the Santaluz Country Club in San Diego, where he served as Food and Beverage Director; Dolce Pane E Vino Restaurant in Rancho Santa Fe, where he served as Managing Partner; Melone’s Culinary Public House in Coeur d’Alene, where he served as chief creator and manager; Artisan in Paso Robles, where he served as General Manager.

Each of these experiences honed Michael’s expertise in developing innovative and popular dining experiences, highly trained staff, devoted clientele and cost effectiveness. And all of these traits are what won him the Food and Beverage Director’s position at the Club. “This position calls for strong and talented leadership,” say Stacie Harper, Club CEO. “Michael has that strong leadership background and also knows how to offer new, fun and exciting experiences for our members that ensure the Club stays current with the latest trends while maintaining its signature private club service.” An essential piece of that service is the quality of the food itself. And that’s where Executive Chef, Aaron Crumbaugh, shines. A native of Ithaca, a small rural town in Michigan, Aaron grew up working on the family farm and cooking with his grandmother in the kitchen. “I have always loved cooking,” says Aaron. “From a very young age I realized that food brought people together and always played a role in every great moment I had.”

Aaron Crumbaugh, Executive Chef

Chef Aaron and Chef Joseph Choi A natural athlete, Aaron’s interest in sports led him to attend Michigan State where he played on the Men’s Volleyball Team and graduated with a degree in Advertising. He pursued a career in the entertainment industry after college and was represented by major talent agencies that sent him on auditions for movies, commercials and print advertising. One of the most notable of these experiences was Aaron’s appearance as a contestant on the Emmy-winning CBS series, The Amazing Race, Season 6. And still, the call to the culinary world was the strongest voice within him. This

calling led Aaron to return to school at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Pasadena where he graduated in 2006. Upon graduation, Aaron landed a job at the Lobby Restaurant at the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago, one of the most prestigious hotels in the country at the time. Additional culinary and management experience was gained at Home Cooked Catering/The Wagyu Wagon in Chicago, where Aaron served as President. Aaron also served as President for Crumbaugh Consulting and VP of Business Development and Advertising

at Thompson River Ranch. Along the way, Aaron appeared as a 3-time contestant on Cutthroat Kitchen and Food Network Star on the Food Network Channel. Most recently, Aaron co-created Chef ’s Week PNW. Quality of life and proximity to family are what brought Aaron, his wife, Hayden, and their two children to Spokane. Aaron was chosen by Club CEO, Stacie Harper, to be part of the Club’s Guest Chef series and from that quality work was selected as Executive Chef. For all of his career accomplishments thus far, Aaron’s favorite is close to home. “What I’m most proud of in my career is the job I have now with the Club. I’m excited about the new menus and sourcing amazing products from local artisans that make everyone’s experience better, from staff to members. That excitement is shared in abundance by Stacie Harper, CEO. “Both Michael and Aaron bring new energy to everything we are doing. They are both enormously talented and have strong backgrounds to draw from. They aren’t afraid to try new things in order to bring a new vitality to our Food & Beverage program. It’s a great time for the Club and its members.”

What’s in a Name?

?

Our name is one of the first gifts we are given and how we are known and recognized in the world. This fall, in celebration of the dynamic new talent and offerings in our Club restaurant, we are christening the Club restaurant with a new name. Do you have a suggestion for the restaurant’s new name? We would love to hear your idea and any story you would like to share about the name’s significance to you. The nominator of the winning name will receive a dinner for two in the newly refurbished restaurant. Tim Schultz: Assistant Athletic Director

Why did you choose to come back to the Spokane Club? I honestly feel like I have a strong rooted connection to the Club. It is a very intimate business. It only takes about a month before you know members by their first names and they know you and your family. When I was personal training here I made connections with individuals that I never did at other places I trained. The Spokane Club is truly special and I feel blessed to be given another opportunity to be a part of it.

What is your personal philosophy of life that guides your actions in the world?

By Kate Spencer, Editor in Chief

W

hen you ask Tim Schultz about himself, he starts with his wife, Molly, and their five children. They are what matter most to him and what drives his passion for healthy living and sports-based training. The Sandpoint, Idaho native grew up playing sports with his three older siblings who taught him the true meaning of full contact sports. He earned his degree in Exercise Science and Health from the University of Idaho, which launched him into the world of personal training. Tim has worked as a personal trainer for the past six years, including at the Spokane Club. He left the Club to pursue other career opportunities, but was drawn back to it when the Assistant Athletic Director’s position opened. He was offered the position and happily accepted. Now, he and Molly are raising their children in Spokane and loving all that our city, and our Club, offer. 30 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2016

Here in his own words is Tim’s excitement about his new position, passion for the Club, and some life lessons he’s learned as a father.

What are you excited most about in this new position? There is very little that I’m not excited about. I feel extremely fortunate to be given this opportunity and to also have such a great team around me. When I was personal training for the Spokane Club I always wanted to push more for sports based training and clinics. Sports and fitness is in my blood and I will always be very passionate about it. Having spent time assisting athletics and sports management with the City of Spokane, I knew right then that this is the career for me. The next thing I know, the Spokane Club is looking for an Assistant Athletic Director, it was meant to be.

Well, it’s kind of a funny story. About five years ago it was “How can I have more fun.” Meaning I was not ready for any serious business anytime soon. Once I met my wife, Molly, and we had our first child my philosophy quickly changed to “Things happen for a reason.” My wife taught me that even through tough situations there are opportunities to learn and grow. Now that I have five kids my philosophy is still changing. One of my favorite quotes is “Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn—and most fools do. But it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving.” –Dale Carnegie What do you value most in your life? My family. For some reason I have been given a large family, especially for my age (28) and I wouldn’t change one thing. We have five children, Presley (3.5yrs) Easton (2.5yrs), Sawyer (2yrs), Lennon and Halen (Twins, 1yr). My wife and I adopted Easton, which is why he and Sawyer are so close in age. My family is everything to me and I will work as hard as possible to make sure they are taken care of.

Four teams: The Scorched Earth, Dos Annas, Not Creative, and Team Ramrod, battled and laughed their way through the competitions with Dos Annas eventually getting the coveted “Coup de BVT!” Look for a repeat of the BVT this September and join in to gain bragging rights for your team! Going Up! The State of Tennis Participation in the US (Data pulled from USTA/TIA Physical Activity Council) Did you know… in the US, the only traditional sport showing an increase in participation over the past 8 years is Tennis! Tennis participation was up 6% while sports including soccer, basketball, football, baseball, volleyball, fishing, golf, and racket ball all showed varying levels of decline. As of 2015, US total tennis players number 17.96 million while “core” players, defined as playing 10 or more times a year, numbered 9.96 million. Of particular interest was the introduction and growth (up 12.6%) of Cardio Tennis since 2006. Cardio tennis bridges the gap between fitness workouts and tennis. Rather than hitting the treadmill for 60 minutes ,players have the option to move and groove on the court while working on footwork and tennis skills. The Spokane Club’s version of this National USTA program is “Lunch-n-Cardio” (Wednesdays at noon) and “Mega-Cardio” (Saturday 9:00-10:15 am). Over the last 10 years, The Spokane Club averaged 5.4 players per clinic translating to over 5,000 participants. Keep on swinging the racket and look to jump into Cardio tennis to get a different workout on court! Sign-up for Cardio tennis at the Valley Desk or contact Jeff at 535-3554 if you have any additional questions concerning our tennis program.

Get your cardio workout at Lunch-andCardio on Wednesdays at noon or Mega-Cardio on Saturdays at 9:00 am.

Halloween Kicks it off!

A Return to Spokane Club League Play September 6! September 6, 2016 marks the return of Spokane Club league play! All levels are absorbed into our various leagues: Tuesday Night Women’s League, Wednesday Night Men’s League, Thursday Morning Women’s, and Friday Morning Women’s 4.0+ league all resume the week of Sept 6. Week one play will be a Round-Robin for all leagues as well as a luncheon on Thursday morning (see article) following the on-court action. All players are welcome to attend the luncheon as we will use it to introduce some new options for league formats. League play is a great way to play tennis in a competitive, “non-threatening” (NTRP rating not jeopardized!), social (after play hanging out/networking), healthy (great exercise for the mind and body) atmosphere. Sign-ups will be posted at the Valley Desk beginning August 22. Call in at 535-3554 or stop by to make sure you get a spot! Contact Jeff jurie@spokaneclub.org if you have any questions or ideas to kick this league off right! Leagues resume the week of September 6

The Great One Visits the Club! There was greatness in our midst recently when Wayne Gretzky visited the Club. Jeff Urie, our amazing Director of Tennis, gave Emma Gretzky, daughter of Wayne and Janet, tennis lessons this summer. Emma then played—and won—our Spokane Summer Classic Girls 14 Advanced Consolation draw. What a joy to meet a legendary athlete and what tremendous satisfaction in coaching the next generation.

Way to go, Jeff!
