hope this reaches you on a beautiful spring day, of course we had a lot of those in February so who knows! As my year as Chair of the Spokane Club Board winds down, I want to take the time to thank a couple of Board members who have really gone above and beyond for our Club. Taudd Hume and Richard Repp took on the arduous task of updating the Club’s Bylaws. The new Bylaws were approved by the Board at the January meeting and will be presented to the full membership for consideration at the annual meeting later this spring. Bill Simer may have thought he was going to have a quiet year as Treasurer, but it hasn’t turned out that way and we all owe Bill our thanks for the time and his good stewardship of the Club’s finances. I also really want to thank Shelley McDowell who has stepped in . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | March/April 2012

wherever and whenever asked and filled several roles this year. Her experience has been, and will be, great for the Club. Here’s one of the things that makes this Club so great. I was standing in Burgundy’s Bar on a Friendly Friday evening in February with some of my favorite people: my wife Barb, son Kyle and daughter-in-law Anna. We were joined by one of Spokane Club’s emerging-leaders, Jonathan Mallahan, and his wife Allison. Jonathan does great work for the City as the liaison for all the neighborhood councils. Anyway I was struck by the incredible vitality of the Club. People of all ages and all walks of life. On a night like this, you can run into old friends like Bob Filo and his wife Barb and new friends like Jonathan and Allison. The Club is a second home for us and a place to relax and enjoy good company. See you at the Club.

Member Use is the Key to a Vibrant, Healthy Club By John Pilcher, CEO

T

hank you. Thank you. Thank you to those of you who are using your Club membership to your full benefit. Did you know that the “average” Club member spends an additional $120 per month over and above their dues on things ranging from personal training to a quiet dinner in Burgundy’s? Of course some members spend thousands. But the critical point here is that usage of the Club is what makes a private, non-profit club like ours a success. It is only through your active use of the Club that we can continue to thrive. Speaking of taking advantage of your membership, we’re launching a yearlong growth campaign that could greatly benefit YOU, our current members. The campaign is titled “Who Do U Know?” and it asks each of you to consider a special friend or colleague who would enjoy belonging to your club. Imagine sharing a workout, a great meal in Burgundy’s or one of our special events with someone you respect and admire. We all have busy lives, and the Club offers so many great ways to stay connected with the ones who matter most to us, personally and professionally. This member referral program not only has long-term benefits for the Club’s

health, but some great rewards for our current members’ enjoyment too. You can earn up to $500 in “Club Cash” to be used for any extra spending around the Club (other than dues) for bringing in a new family membership. And that’s just one of the member category benefits we’re offering to our current members. New members also help spread the operating cost of the Club across a larger membership base, helping us keep our dues at an affordable level. Those are both big incentives to help us grow membership. Are we worried about an “over-crowded” club? Not in the least. The Club had over 3,500 memberships 8 years ago and it currently has 2,750. At 3,500, some parts of the Club were pretty full. Today, only our tennis facility is experiencing capacity issues and we are taking great care not to add more members there in excess of our maximum capacity.

Who do U know that you can introduce to the Club? The answer can make a world of difference.

We typically need to add around 400 new memberships each year just to hold steady at that 2,750 level. This is to offset our typical loss of members through relocations, health issues, deaths, financial hardships and other resignations. Our goal for this campaign is to add 500 new members this next year for a net increase of approximately 100 new members. Please join us in this campaign to keep the Club successful and vibrant. Who do U know that you can introduce to the Club? The answer to that question, and the action you take on your answer, can make a world of difference. I started my message to you with words of thanks and now, I’d like to add some action to those words. I’m excited to tell you that we’re adding two new special member values this Spring both offered exclusively in Burgundy’s Bar: Start your first meeting of the day with a $1 Specialty Coffee Drink. See page 17 for the details. For those of you who are daily coffee drinkers, this should be a real value to you. This special offer runs from March 1 through April 30th. And now, introducing the brand new Saturday Social! This gathering will run every Saturday from March 24 through June 16th. Drop by the Social from 4-6 pm and enjoy special Happy Hour pricing on our great appetizers and beverages. You’ll also enjoy complimentary samples of our tasty Flat Bread. Membership does have its rewards, and for those of you who have been members for 10 consecutive years or longer, your first well drink is on the house! This social builds on the success of our Friendly Fridays and echoes the theme of gratitude historically celebrated at our holiday complimentary Tom and Jerry parties that continue to be so well attended. Dream

Come True

F

or all the skeptics out there, here’s an important truth: dreams really do come true. All it takes is a lot of hard work, planning and commitment. A little luck doesn’t hurt either. Just ask any wedding planner. At the Club, that planner is Jackie Kiley. Her official title is Club Catering Manager, but she’s actually the Dream Maker. “I love to help make people’s dreams come true. Spending time with couples and their families, listening to their ideas and how they picture their wedding or other milestone events is a great process. From their initial vision, we build menus, room settings and the décor. The entire process is creative and collaborative.” The collaboration happens on multiple layers and is ongoing until the dream event is realized. From the very first planning meeting to the very last glass removed from the table at the end of the celebration, a synchronized team of Club catering professionals is at your service.

The planning process begins with booking a meeting with Jackie to discuss the look, feel and budget of the special event. She goes over menu options and how those can be customized, as well as room options based on the number of attendees, Club hotel accommodations for out-oftown guests and all the little details that go into making a special event a big success. Once the plan is in place, Adreanne Yarber, the Club’s Catering Coordinator, puts the plan into action. Customer care, support and follow through are key commitments for a truly special event and the Club’s Catering team embodies these qualities. Working closely with Executive Chef Urs Moser

and his kitchen staff, the teams come together to deliver a dream come true for their customers. “One of the things that really sets us apart from other venues in town is our flexibility to our customers needs,” says Jackie. “We’re sensitive to their schedules, their resources and the stresses that come from putting on what, for most of them, will be one of the biggest events of their lives.” In the process of providing that personal touch, personal bonds can be formed. Members and guests are happy to praise the difference those connections can make not only to their events, but also to their lives.

“My experience with The Spokane Club for my daughter Elizabeth’s Sept, 2011 wedding could not have been better,” says Victoria Ferro. “Being from New York and New Jersey and having owned a bridal salon there, I knew I wanted this to be an elegant, yet fun affair. The planning for this started almost 18 months prior to the event. Jackie Kiley worked with us as if this were her own event, guiding us through the process seamlessly and with the utmost of professionalism.” “During this time, my husband, Ken, unexpectedly passed away and time stood still for a period for us. Jackie made sure the Spokane Club knew of our loss and were there for us. When we got back into wedding planning mode, no one missed a beat. Treating every guest like royalty and every bride like a princess is a tall order to fill. Part of what makes the Spokane Club so successful at it is that in addition to an incredible staff, the Club offers a wide variety of complimentary services all under one roof. Are members or guests of the wedding party coming from out of town? The Club hotel graciously welcomes them. Is a rehearsal dinner in the works? A place by the fire in the Library makes a cozy spot. Would the wedding party like to have a workout before the big day? The Club’s Conditioning Room and Pool is happy to accommodate. Would the bride and her bridesmaids like a special space to drink champagne while the finishing touches are made to their hair, makeup and dresses? Practice really does make perfect and the Club’s catering team has collective decades of perfecting their skills. The leader of the Catering team, Jackie Kiley, came to the Club from the Red Lion Hotel where she worked for 15 years as the Catering Manager. Her specialty areas were social events, daily events and conventions. Drawn to the classic elegance of the Club’s architecture and the opportunity to create more personal, intimate gatherings, Jackie moved to the Club in 2010. Since that time, she’s been wining raves—and new business for the Club—by doing what she does best: helping people make beautiful memories. A proud Father of the Bride, John Zeimantz has many fond recollections of his daughter Anna and her husband, Murphy’s wedding and reception at the Club. “The Club’s catering services and Jackie Kiley did a fabulous job,” says John. “Their work was excellent and much appreciated. The wedding and the reception following were truly memorable. We received many compliments from guests about the great time they had sharing Anna and Murphy’s wedding day.” “The guests especially commented on the wonderful food at the reception and the excellent service by staff. I know Anna was very pleased with everything and has many happy memories of her special day.”

Weddings and other milestone occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, retirement parties and memorial services are very special events. But making everyday gatherings attractive and accommodating is part of the Catering team’s daily mission. Those daily events include business meetings, small conferences, seminars and workshop, guest lecturers, office parties and clubs-within-the-Club events like Cellar Dwellers. From the Club’s grand Georgian Ballroom, which easily accommodates 250 people, to the private, intimate feel of the City Hall Room, which seats 10, the private boardroom-style Riverside Conference Room that seats 14, to the Cutter Room, that provides a stand up reception for 150, the Club has a venue to suit a wide variety of needs. Of these venues, the Georgian Ballroom, City Hall, the Riverside Conference Room and the recently-completed Gourmet Room have all undergone major renovations in the past two years. And still, for many, these rooms may be one of the best-kept secrets at the Club. “I don’t think members really realize what we have here for them,” says Jackie. “I would love to see more members use these services and see for themselves what we have done to bring greater value to their membership. With Chef ’s amazing culinary gifts, Adreanne’s skill for executing on event plans, and a dedicated service staff, we’ve got an incredible team and an amazing array of services here for our members.” . In order to protect the Spokane Club’s private membership status, every member who enters the Club at designated fitness locations or in Burgundy’s and our delis, must scan his or her membership card, or have it scanned by Spokane Club staff. Although many members become familiar faces around the Club, the card scanning policy helps stop unauthorized use by non-members and members who have been suspended or left the Club. Also, the use of membership cards creates a more safe, efficient and distinctive entrance environment for everyone. Replacement cards will be $10, unless the card becomes demagnetized or when a new card is required for youth expired cards. For those with lost or missing cards, be sure to tell the Hotel desk or Fitness entrance staff so they can order you a new card. Adreanne Yarber is Our Spring Service Star!

A

dreanne Yarber always thought she wanted to be a commercial baker but an inspirational chef, who Adreanne met early on in her career, changed her mind. The Club and all of its catering customers should thank that chef for his advice. Adreanne’s change in career direction is responsible for some of the Club’s best catered events in years. “Personalized service is so important to me,” says Adreanne, the Club’s Catering Coordinator. “My job is to create a “wow’ factor for our members and guests so they remember us and want to come back the next time.” “I treat our members and their events the way that I want to be treated myself as a customer—like I am important, that my dollars matter and that my hosts really want me to return. Of course, having a positive exchange and being able to laugh with each other is always a plus.” So are talented coworkers who work in harmony with each other and keep the ups, downs and dramas in perspec24 . tive. Just like her coworker, Jackie Kiley, Adreanne came to the Club from the Red Lion. Both women cut their teeth on large conventions and learned how to pace themselves for the long, fast-paced haul. The experience was invaluable. “I learned so much there,” says Adreanne. “I was really ready for the next step in my career and wanted a more refined environment where I could continue to grow. I’m definitely getting that here at the Spokane Club.” She’s also learning about the quirks of working with a 101-year old building and kitchen that weren’t necessarily designed for large catered events. “We have a very old building that’s been rearranged a number of times. Logistically, that can make some things harder to do than in a new building with a floor plan tailor made for catering. But my team is really adept at seeing ways to work around those challenges. That’s what comes from experience and good training.” There are five captains and 30 servers on Adreanne’s team. Their ongoing training,

as well as updating procedures, standards and controls in the Catering department, is at the top of Adreanne’s current list. One priority she can check off her list for now is upgraded audio/visual equipment, which will please many of our business members and hotel guests. “We’ve modernized our equipment so we serve our members and business clientele much better. We have a lot of great new audio/visual equipment that really makes a difference, including two new flat screen TVs for hook up with lap tops. Ken Holeman is my go-to guy in Catering for all those needs. He’s amazing.” Adreanne is pretty amazing herself. “Adreanne has been very creative with her staff in the presentation for the special Club events like Easter, Thanksgiving and the Olde English Dinner, just to name a few,” says Executive Chef Urs Moser. “I really enjoy working with her and look forward to more collaboration in the future.” With her innate sense of style and design, Adreanne continues to raise the bar for beautiful settings and room decor at the Club, while remaining budget savvy. Her organizational skills are another asset to members and staff Club-wide. “Adreanne has proven to be an exceptional organizer of resources,” says Fran Bresnahan, Human Resources Director. “Whether it’s scheduling her staff for an event or ensuring there are enough champagne glasses to toast the bride, Adreanne has it covered. Always professional with a keen eye for detail, she has garnered the respect of her catering staff and is simply a pleasure to work with.” For Adreanne herself, it comes down to a few simple truths. “I love the people I work with and the people I serve. In the end, the reward is hearing ‘thank you for a wonderful evening.’ It’s a team effort and really satisfying.”

Move It or Lose It. Literally!

If we do nothing to counteract the effects of aging, each day we lose a little more strength, flexibility, and motion. The truth is that in people who are inactive, the loss of muscle, tendon strength and tissue elasticity declines more quickly after 30. That decline becomes even sharper after 50. The likelihood of injury, especially when trying to accomplish similar physical feats that had been attempted at a younger age, is high. No one can reverse the fact that we will begin to lose muscle, strength, or elasticity after 30, but one can significantly slow the process by exercise. Our fast twitch fibers are larger, more powerful and are used during more quick, explosive movements. As we age, we are less likely to move quickly during our day or at work, which means we stop using those fast twitch fibers. Atrophy, or wasting away, begins when the body doesn’t use these. That is why it is not only important to strength train, but also to practice moving at different speeds when we exercise as well. If your New Years resolution was to be active, consider these even more important reasons to do so. Every year you age and don’t continue to exercise, you become more at risk for injury. Before beginning any exercise program you should be screened by your physician. If you have had injuries in the past or are concerned about becoming injured, a physical therapist can evaluate your current ability level and help safely design a training program with you and your trainers. Let’s make it a point to stay in motion and stay younger longer!

New Sports and Fitness Director Brings Talent, Passion and Experience

W

hen Connie Stark moved back to her hometown of Spokane five years ago, she knew one thing for sure: she wanted to work at the Spokane Club. Today, as the Club’s new Sports and Fitness Director, Connie has her dream job. She also has her work cut out for her as she launches a new era of quality programming and services to Club members. Few people could be as well suited to that task. After graduating from Washington State University with a Bachelor degree in Sports Management and minors in Aquatics and Coaching, Connie moved to Bellevue to become the Athletic Operations Director of PRO Sports Club. At that time, a little company named Microsoft was growing at warp speed and its busy execs and managers needed a place they could get in a good workout, 38 . reconnect with their families and catch a deep breath. Connie played an instrumental role in bringing Microsoft on as a corporate member. “We built a suite of wellness and fitness services that became the top choice for business people and an entity in itself.” “These kinds of services can really pay off for corporations in helping their executives and employees increase productivity and reduce stress and sick days. The Spokane Club can become that same kind of center for corporate Spokane.”

The seeds of that center are being planted now on the fourth floor of the Downtown Athletic building. Current services that support this wellness vision at the Club include massage therapy, physical therapy, nutrition counseling and Elite Fitness training under the leadership of Molly Benzel, Group Fitness Coordinator. A Pilates Equipment Studio is opening in the Valley in April offering training with Larkin Barnett, a master Pilates trainer, author of six books and former instructor at Canyon Ranch. Signups are being taken for the training now. “For our members,” says Connie, “the benefit of these diverse services is the opportunity is to not only become healthier and stronger, but to cultivate a strong community of support and camaraderie with other members of similar fitness levels and interests. That sense of belonging to a community plays a huge role in overall health and wellbeing.” Over the course of her time with PRO Sports and later, as a facility manager for the Department of the Army in Neureut, Germany, Connie’s passion for living and promoting the active lifestyle grew. So did her business connections. In 1993, she launched StarkTours, an international outdoor recreation and sports company that hosted adventure programs throughout the world. All of the tour design, organization and promotion was done by Connie, who brought the company to profitability in just 2 years. The job was a perfect fit for

the sports and fitness enthusiast with a keen business mind. It was also a whole lot of fun. “80 percent of my clients were Microsoft employees. We took three trips a year with groups ranging from 15 to 48 people. The activities were seasonally based. In fall, we went hiking in Austria and Sun Valley, in winter, we’d go skiing in Switzerland or Austria and in spring, it was biking in Italy and France. It was a lot of work, but really a blast too.” Connie ran the business for 14 years before returning to Spokane to start the next phase of her professional life. This time, the emphasis was on education and coaching. She became certified in Braille Competency with proficiency in literary Braille and transcribing. From 2006-2010, Connie worked in Spokane Public Schools with visually and behaviorally impaired children. Together with teachers and other support staff, Connie worked to mainstream special needs children into the educational system, as well as offer support to families of the students. Concurrently, Connie’s passion for sports and fitness found a home at Ferris High School where she became head coach of the freshmen girls’ basketball team in 2009. It was a winning season both for the players and for Connie. In 2010, Connie became the Program Director for IEYSA/Spokane Shadow Soccer Club. In addition to her supervision, planning and management duties, Connie networked with the City of Spokane to develop sporting events and tournaments. She also organized the Olivia Chaffin Memorial Soccer Tournament for over 700 teams, raising over $10,000 for the memorial fund and additional funding for the soccer club. Today, as the Spokane Club’s Sports and Fitness Director, Connie has both

the pedigree and the experience to lead her team—and the Club’s Sports and Fitness department—to greatness. “Each of my staff is a gem in their own right. My job is to pull them together and to open up growth opportunities for them and the Club. My philosophy is to hire the best, build them to be their personal best and provide the environment for everyone to support each other.” “A lot of members know that I am a former Club member. They know I understand, from a member’s perspective, that even small improvements can make a big difference. We build on the good that is already here and grow that good into the future.”

Club Handball Updates The 2012 Handball Singles Tourney has come and gone and another successful tournament has been placed in the books. For the 19th consecutive year, Jay Balkenbush overcame a competitive field to capture a win in the Open division beating Fred Schoener. In other competition, the “A’s” found Pat McCabe edging out Blake Cloninger in a hard fought battle, while Lara Schoener stole the “B” division for the second year in a row. Other winners include Paul Buller in both the 40+ and 50+ divisions. Congratulations to all the winners and participants of this year’s tournament. Now it’s time to turn our focus to the Doubles Tournament! Teams have been chosen and, hopefully, partners were picked with careful consideration because only one team will be left standing in the end claiming victory and bragging rights for the rest of the year. A

new tradition within the Spokane Club tennis community was born on Friday, January 27, 2012! Our “Who’s on First?” tennis mixer kicked-off the 2012 USTA league season with a huge bang! Over 65 enthusiastic players showed up on a Friday night, divided into 12 teams, then took to the courts participating in everything from “Choo-choo Train” warm-ups to tennis “megacardio-ish” drills and even competed in a team scavenger hunt throughout the facility! Oh yeah, they did play some tennis too! So why do we need this mixer? After sending six Spokane Club teams to last year’s Tri-Cities play-offs, it was evident many of our Club players did not know one another across NTRP and gender boundaries.

Rather than having built in cheer leaders and teammates helping each other, we had pockets of Club members doing their own thing! Upon hearing this message during a follow-up Tennis Sub-Committee meeting, Eric Ellingsen stated the obvious (yet genius): “We should have a mixer before the next USTA season so we can all meet!” So the “Who’s on First?” mixer began to take shape! Sponsorship by Heineken and Miller Lite (thanks to awesome Club member ,Karen Cook!) coupled with an excellent grouping of tennis players ensured the night would be nothing short of a huge success! Everyone came primed to have a great time and to meet as many players in the community as possible! Whether it was trivia, name tag analysis, or just munching on pretzels, everyone had opportunities to mingle, win prizes, and to compete in tennis throughout the night. Participants also received awesome laminated racket bag tags (designed by Club member Stephanie Bregher!) officially identifying them as “Team Spokane Club” players! Food and drink were in abundance as the night’s activities continued through closing! Don’t miss our next mixer in early summer! We hope to include the outside courts, BBQ, and maybe a band! Look for posters and sign-ups in the Valley!


Spokane Club Players Shine During Snow Storm Tennis Tournament! Despite 4-10 inches of snow in “blizzard-like” conditions over 177 participants managed to compete in the 2012 Spokane Club Invitational Tournament this January! This annual USTA sanctioned event drew players from all over the Inland Northwest for four days of competition, tennis, and camaraderie. Sterling Savings Bank stepped in as a new sponsor and provided beverages and snacks throughout the event. A festive environment, coupled with being snowed in, led to great crowds throughout the weekend. Thanks again to Sterling Savings Bank for sponsoring this awesome event!

Calling all Penguins and Parents to the Pool This Spring! By Randi Martin January proved to be a rough month for the Penguins. We had to cancel our very first meet of the year due to weather conditions. But the team did not let that slow them down one bit. The Penguins continued to train hard and had an amazing showing at the February meet. As the Penguins head into their spring season, I can’t wait to see all their progress. For all you Penguin Parents we are starting a new Adult FIT SWIM beginning in April. The times back right up to the kid’s swim team practice times and I am positive your swimmers would love to see you in the pool with them. There will be no swim team during spring break. I hope you all have a great break and have some fun. If there are any swimmers looking for some extra tips on technique and training this, would be a great time to come on in. New Adult Fit Swim Here comes Summer! It’s right around the corner, but are you ready? 2012 Pend Oreille Basin Swim Update By Aaron Fullen The long-awaited return of the swim challenge has been a smashing hit! The Aquatics staff has labored for many long and tedious hours to bring the most scientifically advanced, cutting edge swim challenge available. We have 58 registered entrants this year, although some of these are like overeager puppies - fully unaware of the level of dedication they have committed themselves to. Inevitably the golden glow of novelty will wear off and only the devoted will continue towards the threefold goal. The 35, 100 and 165 mile goal is staggered to complement each swimmer’s ability and time schedule. New this year is the Polliwog category - a 35 mile splash wherein fledgling swimmers can try their hand in an organized, official swim competition. Many of last year’s finishers are going for the 100 mile mark reminiscent of last years challenge. The most aggressive swimmers have set their eyes on the 165 mile distance to show the world the volume of their aquatic roar! As renowned triathlete Haley Cooper has said “This is honestly the only reason I drag my sleepy carcass out of bed every morning. I know how well I did last year, and I am looking forward to reaching new heights. The accountability and consistency required for these challenges is immeasurably important for my success as an aquatic being.” Well said, Haley. We wish our participants the best as they slog through the miles and go the distance.

Swim Like-a-Pro Clinic Recap The Spokane Club Swim Like-a-Pro Clinic with Sara McLarty was a huge success. Thirty-six participants left with many tips and advanced techniques to improve their open water swimming. The swimmers were of all abilities from weekend warriors to professional tri-athletes to world champion swimmers. The clinician, Sara McLarty, is a 15-time NCAA Division 1 All-American Swimmer and professional Triathlete who has never been beaten out of the water in over 250 triathlons. She passed on her knowledge of starting, sighting, turning buoys, drafting, overtaking swimmers, and finishing. There was group discussion on race feeding and transitioning (water-to-bike). Many of the training techniques were put into practice in the water session, including learning an efficient way of sighting, turning buoys, and drafting. With the number of swimmers in the water, it was an excellent way of learning skills simulating turbulent, race-day conditions. The Inland Northwest Masters Swim Committee and Sara McLarty would like to thank the participants and the Spokane Club for their support!

May 7– 24 (3 week) Registration ends May 2 Register at any time, but registration will close the Monday prior to the start of each session. You will be notified of lesson times the Wednesday before the start of lessons. Cancellations must be received by noon the Friday before the start of the session to avoid a cancellation fee of $10. If you sign up before the registration deadline you will be guaranteed a spot in lessons. Late registration will be taken on availability and space of classes. Classes may be cancelled if there are less then 3 children in a class.

Private Swimming lessons Private and semi-private lessons for adults or children are available for $20 per half hour ($5 for each additional student).
