Wishing all our members a wonderful holiday season and a New Year of health and happiness. Thank you for being a valued part of our Spokane Club community. Your Board of Trustees
Capital Projects Update By John O’Connor, General Manager
2018 is nearly behind us and a new year waits in the wings. From the perspective of almost a year’s worth of work, much has been accomplished in revitalizing, restoring and repairing our Downtown Athletics facility, our Valley tennis/fitness/ family center, and our historic Downtown business and social clubhouse. With three distinctly different properties built in three separate and unique eras, it is an ongoing challenge to address these many and varied needs. The Club is very fortunate to have a talented in-house engineering team with a strong, can-do attitude. The Club also has strong contacts in the community to assist with the larger and more complex issues of decades-old buildings, including our 108-yearold historic clubhouse on Riverside.
Capital improvements that were completed, or are now near completion for 2018 are: • Remodeling and rebranding of Club Restaurant and Bar • New roof above the Bar to fix leaks • New Parking Lot lights at the Valley Club • Remodeling of Downtown Cycle Studio • New lighting in Downtown Racquetball Courts • New parking lot lights at the Valley Club • New Main Street Athletics entrance door. • New hotel ice and water machine.
• New security cameras and upgraded software for both Valley and Downtown in progress. • New HVAC unit for main kitchen in historic clubhouse in progress. • Update and Modernization of six hotel rooms and one hotel suite in progress. In our research leading up to the implementation of the Capital assessment in 2017, we spoke with 17 private clubs across the country that had already implemented capital assessment plans. Our takeaway from those conversations was that Capital Assessments have become a best practice among historical clubs like ours, primarily because of the cost and complexity of repairs associated with these types of properties. We are committed to quality improvements, ongoing progress, and member satisfaction. With historic buildings like ours, it’s a challenge, but one that we are prepared for and honored to steward. All the best, John O’Connor joconnor@spokaneclub.org

Planning a Dream-Come-True Wedding
Photos by Eugene Michel

reating the perfect wedding is an art and nobody does it better than Jackie Kiley, the Club’s Catering Director. From a small, intimate celebration to a gala event, Jackie’s special touch has made hundreds of weddings a dream come true for her brides. Sometimes, that special something in the brides and their families makes the day extra special for Jackie, too. The wedding of Mariah and Nick Russell was one of these weddings.
“Everything from start to finish was perfection with them,” says Jackie of the bride, Mariah Plischke, her mother, Carol Plischke, and Mariah’s sister in law, Ashley Graham. Ashley is one of Spokane’s premiere wedding planners and is the owner and creative director of Ashley Graham Events. The fact that Ashley, a highly regarded event planner who creates events all over town, would refer her sister in law to the Spokane Club for her wedding venue was
music to Jackie’s ears. Not only would the event be special, but the planning of it would be a joy. And it was. “Everything Jackie and her staff did was off the charts,” says Ashley. “I love doing events with her. And it was such a treat to be able to walk upstairs to the Club Hotel and go to bed after a very long day. I look forward to more weddings at the Club.” Jackie echoes that feeling of gratitude and delight in true collaboration. Planning a picture perfect wedding for a family that was thrilled to be key members of the planning team was an added joy. “This family is delightful to work with and so well organized,” says Jackie. “They were collaborative, fun and incredible planners.” It was that attention to detail, passion for preparedness, and love for each other
“Everything Jackie and her staff did was off the charts,” says Ashley. “I love doing events with her. And it was such a treat to be able to walk upstairs to the Club Hotel and go to bed after a very long day. I look forward to more weddings at the Club.”

that made planning the wedding a gift in itself. The happy wedding day was July 7, 2018. Guests and family socialized in the Cutter Dining Room and the wedding and reception were held in the Georgian. While over 150 guests attended, there was a very personal feeling of warmth, happiness and fun in the air. The couple, the family and life itself were robustly celebrated by all. In weddings, as in life, dreams are built through the real work of nurture, collaboration and dedication. When smart people put their heads and hearts together, great things happen. Weddings are one of the greatest things that happen at the Spokane Club. “I cannot thank Jackie enough for everything she did for us,” says Mariah. “She went above and beyond our expectations! I will definitely be referring Jackie and the Spokane Club to anyone looking for the perfect wedding or event venue. The whole day could not have gone better. I am so happy with how everything turned out—it was truly a dream come true.” To contact Jackie Kiley email jkiley@spokaneclub.org 6 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Winter 2018

New Year’s Wisdom: How to Never Get Old By Christine Cronin
“Don’t get old.”
That’s a direct quote spoken to me numerous times at the Club. I always reply that I would prefer getting old over the alternative. Still, I understand, to the best of my current ability, the spirit behind that message. Getting old can be depressing, and older adults are at a higher risk for developing depression. But why wouldn’t they be? Friends start to get serious diseases, some die, loss becomes very real, roles change, your physical abilities change and the way society views you changes as well. None of that is easy or exciting. It’s tough showing up every day to try to be as good as you once were, it’s humbling to need help or require an assistive device to walk, it is frustrating to not be able to depend on the body you once knew. 24 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Winter 2018
Take heart. “Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art.” That’s one of my favorite quotes by Eleanor Roosevelt and it speaks volumes. There are secrets to aging, though they are not creams, drugs, nor a fountain of youth. At the Club I have met in your midst the wise, beautiful old people, who still move with purpose, intention and grace, whose eyes still sparkle with secrets that we may never learn. So if getting old is so bad and we truly want to delay it, let’s stay young forever with these keys: Gratitude, growth mindset, purpose, and connection.
Gratitude: Every day, no matter what, there is something to be grateful for, even if it’s just opening up your eyes. Gratitude helps you sparkle, makes people want to be around you, and helps with resiliency and finding joy in life. Growth mindset: A growth mindset means you are willing to receive new information, possibly even change your
ways. People with fixed mindset “I am who I am, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” struggle more and are less happy as they age, not to mention that their mind dulls. Challenge your mind like you would your body, make it stretch by learning new names, trying new things, putting yourself in new situations. Every time you ask your mind or body to do something new it forges a new pathway in the brain, strengthens connections and keeps the mind running smoother. A fixed mindset is a great way to start aging yourself prematurely, so try to learn something new every day. Be a student of life. Purpose: Life should be meaningful. You need meaning in life, so go find it. You can have a job and not have a purpose, conversely you can be retired and have incredible purpose. Find your “why?” Know the “why” do you get up in the morning. It will be harder and harder to rise as your joints stiffen and your aches of youth come back to remind you of your past, but if you have purpose, you will rise, again and again. Connection: Robust connection to life is the key difference in why women live longer than men. So men, take a lesson from women’s playbook. Connect with the people around you and make it a point to be around the people you love. Isolation is a form of torture. If you’re already good at connecting, please go connect with someone either older, or younger than you. Meet someone who is in a different stage of life. In doing this you will simultaneously teach, learn and help each other by providing the simplest thing: presence. The gym may be the only time an older person makes it out of their house
all day. Perhaps they are now homebound and you no longer see them. Go visit them. It may be you one day who is sitting home all alone. If that day comes, won’t you wish for a friendly face at your door? I will. As for me, I’m still learning names at the Club’s gym. If I haven’t learned your name yet, I look forward to meeting you. I hope you are learning names too and that you have the courage to try calling people by their name the next time you see them. A name is a beautiful thing. Isn’t it special when someone calls yours?
In this coming New Year, I hope you all continue to be grateful, to grow, to find your purpose and to connect with others. In the end, human connections are much more vital to your ongoing wellbeing than losing 5 lbs. And in deepening your connection to others, you just might gain the world. The Club offers a wide variety of classes that may be a good fit for you. If you are curious about a new class contact Molly Benzel at 459-4571 for some recommendations. www.spokaneclub.org | Winter 2018 | 25

This class will include a 60 minute asana practice for strengthening muscles that support the low back and releasing tension in muscles that inhibit the function of the low back. Core Strength - The Most Important Strength to Maintain Core strength, or lack of it, will have a direct effect on your quality of life. If the core is strong, posture improves, low back and neck pain are eased, and balance is better and confidence increases. The muscles of the core are just about everything between the knees and the waist - not just the abdomen. In this workshop you will learn how to assess your own core strength, identify the location and function of key muscles and how strengthen each of the key core muscles with a sequence of Yoga postures. A take home core sequence will be provided. Please reserve your spot by calling the Valley Sport Shop at 535-3554 or registering online at Spokaneclub.org.

Fitness Instructor Highlights
Tom Light Tom is a long-term yoga practitioner and teacher, and has taught yoga at the Spokane Club for the past 10 years. He has also taught classes, workshops, and teacher training in several studios in Spokane. He started using body awareness and mindfulness to augment sports performance when he was about 10 years old. Tom was a high-jumper in high school and college, with a PR of 6’6”; and competed in Masters track meets and decathlons for many years. Tom also coached runners and track athletes from teens to Masters for 20 years. In the early 1990s, Tom started using yoga poses to maintain flexibility for both himself and the athletes he coached. Tom has a strong appreciation of the interaction of alignment, physiology, and inner focus. He uses these concepts to help participants develop strength and flexibility, balance, mind-body awareness, optimal performance, and injury prevention. Tom is available for personal sessions in yoga, for staying injury free through yoga practice by using proper alignment and mechanics. Tom’s classes are Downtown on Monday and Friday at 12:15 pm in Studio 4; and on Thursday (Beginning Yoga) at 5:30 pm in Studio B.

By Oksana Sydor Coming to the USA from Ukraine twenty-one years ago presented an immense challenge to me. I could not speak English, I knew nothing about this country, and I had only a few friends. Taking ESL courses at Purdue University and working at the school gave me a start at learning the English language. And by traveling the country with my husband, Tim, I became acquainted with the marvels of the USA and its people. I began instructing fitness classes in 2009, when Tim and I lived in Athens, Georgia. Since we moved to Spokane, I’ve been teaching cycling, strength conditioning, core, senior fitness, TRX, HIIT, and interval training. I’ve met many wonderful people. They’ve helped me become a better person. That’s one aspect of my job that I truly appreciate. I’ve been welcomed by the members at the Spokane Club since my first day, and I’ve made many great friends. Now as a bigger family with my twins, Orest and Sofia, we continue to travel. We enjoy hiking, climbing local peaks, biking, running trails around Spokane, and skiing. I’m fortunate to have a job I love and working with people I’m glad to call my friends.

2018 Spokane Club Member’s Only Tennis Tourney The 2018 Members Tourney is in progress! With competitions spread out over two weeks, members can easily participate in up to four separate events without pulling a hammy! Every player can find a suitable level to compete in, from beginner to tour level (not saying what tour!). Participation awards, great food and opportunities to watch all of your fellow members duel it out on court make this THE PLACE TO BE for tennis in November.
Our Tennis Programming: Walking a Tightrope!
By Jeff Urie, Director of Tennis
Our Spokane Club tennis courts are in high demand for activities including: member play, lessons, internal league play, Club mixers, USTA League play, USTA Tournaments and even special event rental. We are truly the premier Spokane tennis facility. With all of these activities vying for court time, we must walk a fine line between programming and over-programming to make the best use of our facility and to make sure our members are getting the best use as well. For every event we host on court, I get feedback from members saying we should do more of these events as well as from members saying we do too many of these events. These events benefit the Club in various ways from exposure to non-members for future membership, financially by generating direct and passive income and most importantly by retaining members looking to participate in the programming. Recently I have been asked to explain why we are reserving a front court for lessons rather than remaining exclusively on courts 5/6 for lessons. The answer is simple: demand for junior lessons is at an all-time high! These Club members attend school and cannot get on court until 3pm on weekdays which forces us to expand our teaching courts from 3:00 – 6:00 pm rather than turning members away. We also do not want to impact members who do not have an option of playing earlier than 6:00 pm on a workday. We try to program our court time so all of our members have the opportunity to play, take lessons, compete or generally use the courts as much as possible. We also recognize programming may limit some choices on when to play, but as we are running at about 65% capacity, there are still plenty of options to play tennis at the Spokane Club! Thank you for understanding the balance we try to maintain and for allowing tennis to grow at the Spokane Club! 32 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Winter 2018
Spokane Club In-House Leagues are Hopping! Perhaps spurred on by the recent influx of new members we have seen a resurgence of players looking to compete in our in-house tennis leagues this season! Participation is up a whopping 15% across the board from last year including new players, returning players and those that never left! In-house league play is a great barometer of tennis health at the Club even though the increasing variety of USTA league offerings over the years has tended to cannibalize participation. League play addresses 3 retention issues most commonly cited by players leaving the sport of tennis: finding someone to play with, finding an open court, and having a consistant time to play. Our leagues generally run in 6-week increments and are for all levels of player. Contact Jeff in the valley at jurie@ spokaneclub.org or call 535-3554 if you are interested in joining the next session!

January 2019 Spokane Invitational Sponsored by South Perry Pizza Great tennis, awesome pizza and a super fun crowd! These words best describe the Spokane Invitational Tennis Tournament over the past 5 years. We would like to think the buzz around the tournament is driven by the tennis, but it could actually be the Saturday lunch service, South Perry Pizza has provided the last 5 years. South Perry owners and Spokane Club members, John and Paula Siok have been a great addition to our line-up of event sponsors and we appreciate all they do to make our event memorable! This tourney, Jan 18-21, 2019, kicks off USTA competition in Eastern Washington by drawing players from all over the PNW and Montana! Second in size to our members-only tourney, this event lets everyone know the tennis you will be bringing in 2019. On-line sign-ups cover Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles over a wide range of playing abilities ensuring everyone has a place in this event.
