Business | Chairman’s message

Moving Forward with Excitement!

By Patrick DeVries, Board Chair

A

s past leaders have stated during their term as Board Chair, the past year has sped by and my time as Chairman of the Board is officially coming to an end this summer at the Annual Meeting. To say this has been a great experience understates the true value of serving the members of the Spokane Club. During my term I have met many of you and have strengthened my relationships with the rest of the membership. What I have found is a deep relationship with the Club for most of us. Stories of growing up at the Club, then becoming members in our own right and continuing the tradition of creating lasting Spokane Club memories are a shared experience. My wife Susan and I were married at the Club in 1987 and our daughter followed suit some years later, having her own wedding at the Club. Memorial events, weddings, parties, social and athletics are all a big part of our culture and experiences at the Spokane Club. Our organization has challenges like many other enterprises. It takes work, 2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Summer 2019

planning, focus, strategy and tactics to be successful. After many years of running my own business, I have learned that it takes constant effort and support of the team to accomplish our goals. I am pleased to have such support from Spokane Club staff, members, and our management team at Kemper Sports. We are moving forward. As Chris Bell, Past Chair, stated in his last message to membership in last summer’s Signals, his was a year of Stabilization and Progress. I am pleased to let you know that stabilization and progress is continuing. Our Kemper Sports team, lead by GM John O’Connor has met our expectations in many areas. Since John came aboard in October of 2017 we have worked hard to manage expenses and employ costs controls in many areas of the Club, while doing our best to maintain the member experience and enhance it as we can. The Capital Fund has raised significant money to provide for the care and maintenance of our facilities, enhanced athletic offerings, ongoing

hotel modernization program, improvements in food and beverage, security and frankly, more to come. The front entry to the Downtown clubhouse is long overdue for a facelift and this will be in the works soon. This will be a long-term project, due to the age of the building and the wear and tear of years of weather. New pavement and painting at the Valley location, along with needed upgrades to both swimming pools are currently taking place. The list is long, and like a homeowner, seemingly endless. We have great gratitude to all the members for your support in these long delayed improvements. Andy DeMott will take the reins as your Chairman at the upcoming Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held Thursday, July 11 , in the Georgian Ballroom. The meeting starts at 5:30 and I hope to see you there! I have worked closely with Andy and know that he brings a strong desire to do what’s best for the Club and its membership. If you are interested in dancing, check with Andy, as he is heavily involved in this activity! Finally, as we head towards Summer, thank you for allowing me, a member, to serve as your Chair. It is a wonderful experience and is satisfying that we are working hard to preserve this great treasure in our community. Loving Spokane and the Spokane Club is easy. Tell your friends and have them join. We are stronger together. Thank you. Patrick

A Great Grandson’s Gift: The Life and Times of Patsy Clark

By Kate Spencer, Editor in Chief

J

ohn Richards never met his great grandfather, the legendary Patsy Clark. However, in writing a book about Patsy’s life, John has produced a book that is on its way to becoming required reading for Northwest history lovers. In the creative process of research and writing, John has also gotten to know his great grandfather very well. The Life and Times of Patsy Clark is the story of a young, inquisitive Irishman who left his homeland and became one of the wealthiest men of his time. It’s also the story of our young country and the life-changing opportunities that came to those who were willing and able to step up to the challenge of those often dangerous, back-breaking ventures. John is a former Spokane Club Board President who served on the Club Board for a total of seven years. Over the course of his membership, John has volunteered on numerous Club committees. He is also a declaratively passionate tennis player, having played tennis every Tuesday and 4 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Summer 2019

Thursday for over 35 years at the Valley Spokane Club on 4th Avenue. The writer and researcher in John first awakened in 1956. While attending his grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary at the Patsy Clark Mansion, John first learned that not only had his grandparents been married at the mansion, but

that John’s father had lived there with his parents as a boy. “I knew little about my great grandfather, except that I had a copy of the newspaper article with his picture and obituary when he passed in 1915,” John recalls. “Always interested in Northwest history and the Wild West, pursuing the Clarks’ life odyssey fulfilled a research and writing passion I did not know I had. Chronicling only Patsy’s mining exploits would have missed the amazing times in which he lived and worked.” In 2012, John began using Ancestry. com to learn more about his genealogy. He also became involved with The Westerners, a Northwest history club. These pursuits encouraged John to do deeper research on Patsy’s life and soon, he and his wife Mary were traveling across the country and beyond, following the incredible trail of Patsy. The book was published in December, 2018. Over the course of his research and writing the book, one of the topics John found most intriguing was mining itself and the courage of the people in that industry. Notably, Patsy Clark.

“Mining was a very difficult, dangerous employment with little compensation compounded by the myriad of diseases, accidents, and threat of Indian attack. With little education and no money, Patsy worked his way up the ladder of success to the pinnacle and became one of the most well-known mining men of the 19th century.” The greatest satisfaction for John in completing this book is a new awareness of both his ancestors and himself. “From this writing experience I am confident that many people have a story to tell or someone else in their family tree that would be compelling. The Life and Times of Patsy Clark can now be added to our understanding of those remarkable people that left a rich legacy in the Northwest.”

Eric Marple is New Chef de Cuisine for 1910 Restaurant!

By Kate Spencer, Communications Director

F

rom the time he was a young boy, Eric Marple, the Club’s new Chef de Cuisine of 1910 Restaurant and Lounge, instinctively knew that he wanted to be a chef. One of his first influencers was his grandmother who taught Eric to peel shrimp, stir sauce and butter bread. Later, after attending Le Cordon Bleu in Portland, Oregon, Eric trained with a dynamic mentor for five years at country clubs throughout the Pacific Northwest. “I specifically remember learning his Clam Chowder, which his mentor had taught to him,” Eric recalls. “I trained on 6 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Summer 2019

his Chowder for six months and every Friday, something wasn’t quite right. The roux wasn’t cooked enough, the potato was overdone, the clams were not washed well enough. But after all that time, finally one Friday he tasted the chowder, looked at me and just smiled. I will remember that forever.” John O’Connor, General Manager of the Club, promoted Eric to his new position after watching Eric’s dedication first hand. “With his experience in both the culinary and business sides of food operations, Eric brings a great balance

to his new, expanded role,” says John. “Eric will be responsible for the daily operations of 1910 Kitchen, supervising food production and food preparation, personnel, developing new menu offerings in collaboration with Executive Chef Dennis Sparber, and ensuring that quality and cost standards are consistently attained. Equally important is the cooperative spirit that Eric brings every day to insuring the best experience possible for our members and guests.” Born and raised in the Tri-Cities, Eric grew up surrounded by local farms and wineries. The bounty of that region gave him a playground for the palate, one that he cultivated happily. He got his very first restaurant job in 1995. “I remember my comradery the most with the cooks. They would see my eagerness to learn and take the time to show me knife skills and basic cook training. I specifically remember my first night on the saute station. My arms were so sore from flipping pans all night, but after the shift, the Chef slapped me on the back and said “No more dishes for you—You are full-time now.” That’s when I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.”

His new role as Chef de Cuisine for 1910 is a great fit for Eric’s sensibilities and desire to constantly improve the customer experience. “I am excited about presenting the food as a delicious work of art,” says Eric. “My goal is to have members take pictures of the food when it arrives. I want to make 1910 a unique, one of a kind experience in Spokane. Not only for our members to experience fine dining, but to make it a Spokane culinary destination and home for our members. I’m really excited to create a stronger connection. We are essentially personal chefs for all our members and are working towards creating menus with personal flair.” That personal touch, combined with a passion for his profession, and a genuine joy in the process of creating unforgettable moments for members, is part of Eric’s heart and soul. He takes his job personally. “What I like best about working at the Spokane Club is the ability to be a personal chef. We cook for the same members and guests quite often and it’s a great feeling to create their dish a little more personalized every time.” “We have a phrase in the 1910 kitchen when we have 3 members come up to the line to say “Thank you! The food was delicious”! We call it a Hat trick! Our record is currently 3 Hat Tricks in one shift. However, we hope to break that record!” Please join us in warmly welcoming Eric Marple, Chef de Cuisine of 1910. Cheers to many more Hat Tricks!

Pictured are Eric, his brother Nathan and their grandparents Bob and Lee Ilah Marple the day Marples Restaurant opened in 2007.

Enjoy Northwest fresh plates, shared plates and rotating specials in a casually elegant, classically cool setting. 1910 celebrates the year the historic Kirtland Cutter-designed Clubhouse was completed.

Come see what the happy buzz is all about!

Testimonials of True Service At Spokane Club, our commitment is to provide each and every member and guest the best we have to offer, starting with our attitude. We know that to our members and guests, everything matters and their happiness means everything to us! Below are some member and guest service successes we want to share.

Our family had a very good reception at Spokane Club during a very difficult time while we needed to attend to a severely ill family member at Sacred Heart Hospital. The staff was compassionate, hospitable and ready to serve all our needs during our crisis. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts! – Katherine Billeci The Spokane Club staff went out of their way to accommodate my last minute news interview today at their Downtown location. Even located a phone charger for me! They treat their members wonderfully and I highly recommend!! – Katie Regelin

My home away from home! I’m here almost every day for the people, great instructors and variety of classes. The staff appreciates suggestions and they do their best to accommodate everyone. I even met my husband here 31 years ago. Great place to make new friends! – Julie McElroy Whenever I am working in Spokane, I always try to get a room at the Spokane Club Inn. The main reason I do is so I can have access to the Spokane Club gym. The members are so friendly and so are the staff members. The staff does an extraordinary job of keeping the weight room spotless and organized. – Jen McConnell Doss

I traveled from Southern California to coordinate my cousin’s wedding at this venue. Working with Jackie (Catering Director) and her assistant Sara by phone and email, they were extremely friendly, prompt and always willing to answer any questions that came up. Upon arriving I was immediately in awe of the beautiful architecture of this historic building, it is the perfect place to have a wedding. The day of the wedding I was met with the same professional generosity. Jackie was there for every last-minute surprise. Stephen (Banquet Manager) coordinated every stage of the reception making personal contact with me at each phase throughout the evening. The staff for the Social Hour and the Reception was so friendly and efficient. I would recommend this venue over and over again!! – Sandra L. M.

ne of the biggest trends in the fitness industry is High Intensity Interval Training, commonly known as HIIT. This training protocol involves repeated bouts of high intensity effort followed by short bouts of recovery. HIIT training is still the most popular way to train because it’s results driven, time efficient, and can be modified for all fitness levels. Besides burning serious calories in the process, you actually continue to burn extra calories for up to 24 hours after you’ve completed a HIIT workout.

Valley HIIT Studio Classes These workouts start out with a functional and dynamic warmup followed by a 30-minute high energy workout, wind down with 10 minutes of Core and stretching.

In the News Larkin Barnett, a nationally esteemed Pilates instructor who teaches Pilates and Functional Fitness at the Club has published her latest article in the March/ April PilatesStyle magazine. Congrats to Larkin and her ongoing dedication to Pilates.

2019 Inland Empire Fitness Conference Wrap Up

Stuart Aitken and Tim Arndt. Stuart runs the podcast for Lift the Bar.

By Kate Spencer, Communications Director

T

he brainchild of Tim Arndt, the Club’s Personal Training and Conditioning Room Manager, the Inland Empire Fitness Conference (IEFC), held on April 12 & 13 was a huge success this year. Launched in 2017, IEFC brings together top level health, fitness and lifestyle presenters for a two-day intensive (and intensely fun) exploration of best practices, new innovations and community building. Tim’s desire in creating this conference was two-fold: To bring the best, most unique educational event of its kind to Spokane, and to present and educate his peers while growing a robust network. Tim built that network over the course of 8 years, and built a dynamic base of conference attendees. The game changer, however, has been the community magic that happens at the event itself. “I put every effort into making each person who attends the conference feel 24 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Summer 2019

welcomed and valued, says Tim. “And I put a lot of thought into the presenters and their value to attendees. The other part of the equation has been the “fun” factor. People attend and get top notch education which is what they expect. What they don’t expect is how much fun they have while learning and networking with some of the best in the industry. Additionally, a lot of folks have commented that another thing that makes IEFC great is all the extra events I’ve added, such as a shuffleboard tournament and a “Carlton Dance” contest.” Naturally, the majority of people who attend the IEFC are entrepreneurial personal trainers who own their own studios or rent space. But that’s not the only demographic that loves this offering. Tim’s broad thinking and ability to see connections in diverse people and industries is a game changer. “From exercise scientists to college professors and even folks that don’t

work in the industry and just want to learn from the top fitness educators in a fun and engaging atmosphere, there’s a place for them at IEFC”. This broad appeal has brought attendees from all over the country and around the world. “Interestingly, most of the attendees are not local,” says Tim. “We have folks coming from as far away as Japan, Scotland, Nova Scotia and all over the US and Canada. It has become an international event!” Networking is a key factor in the success of the conference. The opportunity to talk shop with some of the best fitness educators in the world is where the true value and opportunity lies. For Tim, the most personally fulfilling aspect of the conference is that it makes a positive impact on the entire fitness industry, as well as the lives of both trainers and their clients. “Trainers become better and more knowledgeable, which provides a better experience for their clients. Trainers get inspired to do more and make a better

Conference attendees doing a “Group Flex” living for themselves and their families. And it has been extremely rewarding to see business deals happen as a result of the networking that happens at the conference. For example, one of my presenters from this year is now working with a couple attendees on an email marketing program to help grow their business and creating an e-book for another attendee.” Tim is also delighted that this robust and evolving conference, dedicated to health and fitness, is held at Spokane Club. “I honestly couldn’t imagine a better place to host IEFC. The Georgian Ballroom is a beautiful setting and has ample room for comfort. I love that the Club is a one stop shop for all attendees’ needs, from lodging to dining to exercise. The conference attendees are always amazed at the Club offerings and appreciate the convenience of everything being within our walls, and just a short walk away if they want to experience the city a bit. It really is perfect.”

MEET the ZAGS! Tennis Mixer was a Smash!

By Jeff Urie, Director of Tennis

W

hen Gonzaga University’s newly hired men’s tennis coach, Jonas Piibor, and his assistant, Cesar Vargas contacted me about coming out to see the Spokane Club, I was excited to show off our facility! After spending a short time with team GU, I knew I wanted our members to meet them and to be caught up in the excitement that is Zag tennis! It was just a question of what format to use to highlight both the skills and fun they bring with them …after a little coordination, The Meet the Zags Mixer was born!

2019 Eastern Washington Tennis Championship A great way to prepare for a full summer of tennis action! Sign up on-line at USTA. com. Adult Open Singles, Doubles and Mixed. NTRP 3.0-4.0 Singles, Doubles and Mixed events. June 7 – 9

The coaches showcased their players by running their boys through a variety of on-court drills then we randomly (names out of a hat!) paired Spokane Club members with Gonzaga players and battled through four rounds of doubles. A quick fast serve contest saw 1117mph serves win the day followed by a fun dinner social upstairs. This was a great opportunity to see/play some great tennis and a really great opportunity to bond with a local college tennis program. The kids were awesome on and off court and we will definitely do this again next school year!!! BTW, after our Meet the Zags mixer, the GU Men’s tennis program has been on pace for its best ever showing in the WCC…coincidence???? 30 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Summer 2019

Spokane Club Teams Dominate the 2019 Local USTA League! For the first time in recorded history, our Spokane Club USTA teams finished first in local play in the Women’s 3.5 (Griffith team), the Men’s 3.5 (Marvel team), the Women’s 4.0 (Greer team) and the Men’s 4.0 (Anderson team) divisions! The only division we did not win was the Women’s 3.0 (Boinski team) where we placed 2nd! We also had several club members on the Men’s 4.5 team that now advances to Portland in August and on the Men’s 5.0 (Urie team) which tied for first with a 5-1 record! At regionals, although our teams competed well, only the W4.0 captained by Lisa Greer managed to advance to Portland! Now we are gearing up to dominate the USTA 40+ leagues! Great job teams!
