It’s the Connections We Make

By Andy DeMott, Board Chair

O

ur membership in the Spokane Club gives each of us access to many facilities and experiences. We can work on our individual fitness, take part in a sport, enjoy a nice meal and even stay in a hotel room. But those activities wouldn’t be very fulfilling if we did them by ourselves. That treadmill might give me a good cardio workout, but I sure don’t bond with it. I might savor a salmon dinner in “1910”, but a good meal is much more satisfying when it’s shared with others. To me, the special thing about the Spokane Club is the connections that we make with each other. Diane and I joined the Spokane Club in early 2011, having just moved to Spokane knowing no one except our real estate agent. So, we asked ourselves, ‘How and where do a couple of empty-nesters, new to town, connect with others who share our interests, who will add more dimensions to our lives than we would have on our own?’. To make a long story short, through our involvement in the Spokane Club, we have found friendships that we will treasure for the rest of our lives. And we 2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2019

look forward to connecting with more members who we have yet to meet. So, what’s my point? Each one of us has joined the club for a reason, or some combination of reasons. When we completed the application, got our member card, and started using the club, each of us had hopes and expectations for what we would experience with our membership. Our membership statistics tell us that, as a club, we aren’t as successful in connecting members with their expectations as we want to be. One of the common reasons given for member resignations is “Non-Use”. To me, that means that those members probably did not find the connections that they were looking for. When a member resigns, it’s not just a smaller number of memberships on the books. It’s also about the club having lost fellow members who bring energy, new perspectives, and different life stories. When members leave the club, we lose diversity and the possibility of shared future experiences that they contribute. I think that we, the club, can do better at strengthening connections among

our members. At the top of the list of priorities I have for this year is “Grow membership, with emphasis on member retention.” Ten club members are serving as trustees for the current fiscal year. Each one of us has our own experiences, ideas, and connections to other members. This background is what each trustee brings to our board meetings and decisions. That’s great, but as the board considers topics like member retention and capital fund projects, it would help trustees and staff to reach out to more members for a wider field of view; to better understand what members are looking for and gather ideas for the future. So, we’re going to try something new. In the coming year, we’re going to convene three “Member Connect” events. At these sessions, club members will be invited to sit with board members and senior staff to share their ideas. Afterwards, when the board convenes its meeting, we’ll collect and share what we’ve heard. We’ll capture your member input, and it will inform and influence our future decisions. More details will be coming out as these events are scheduled. I hope that many of you will take part. It’s your club, and we need your ideas. So, that’s a bit about my view for the months ahead. I’m looking forward to a productive year working with all the trustees, with John O’Connor and the KemperSports team, with the entire club staff, and with all club members. Each one of us, every member and staff person, is a part of creating the experiences that we have at the club and the connections we make with each other. Adding to our Board this year are three dynamic members of our Club Community: Kevin Twohig, a Past Club Board Chairman, along with Ross Blevins and Taylor Bemis.

Love Story

By Kate Spencer, Communications Director

T

rue love is a precious gift that builds over time and trust, in lives well and bravely lived. Few couples personify true love more happily than Tracy and Tim Fitzgerald. Married at the Club on March 16, 2019, the future couple was introduced to each other by Tim’s daughter Caitlin, who was applying to the United States Naval Academy. At the time, Tracy was Caitlin’s volunteer Regional Blue and Gold Officer, as well a Bailiff for the Honorable Richard Leland, Spokane District Court. Tim had recently moved back to Spokane to be with his children after completing 30 years as a Colonel of the United States Marine Corps. Tracey introduced Tim to the Spokane community as he explored what would become his second career. Tim’s first career more than prepared him for the second. As a former Chief of Staff of all NATO forces in Afghanistan, 4 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2019

and former Presidential Command Pilot for President Bill Clinton, Tim knew how to navigate the risks, responsibilities, challenges and complexities of serving his country. With the retirement of Tom Fallquist after 30 years of service as Spokane County Clerk, and the encouragement of Tracy and her boss, Judge Leland, Tim was ready to campaign for

that office, which he won. He currently serves as Clerk of the Superior Court. Tim proposed to Tracey in 2018 at the Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Downtown Spokane alongside the Spokane River bank. She joyfully said yes. Tracy and Tim’s wedding was celebrated by generations of family and friends, including all six of their combined adult children. “Combined, we have six kids, plus one future daughter in law and a granddog, Barley, the Great Dane,” says Tracy. “We call them “F” Troop. They are The Fitzgerald and Ferrez kids and they truly care about each other so much that they even cover for each other like true siblings do in every family. All of them were there for our beautiful day.” “I was blessed to have my son, Captain Riko Ferrez, USMC, surprise me the morning of the wedding. Thanks to my husband, my son, his wonderful Commanding Officer, and my future daughter-in-law! “In the program, Riko was listed on the wedding program as deployed, but he ended up joining Judge Leland in walking me down the aisle. It was absolutely one of the very happiest days of my life.” Not surprisingly, the wedding was a collaborative work of love. Tim’s son, Kellen Fitzgerald, was Best Man; Aitanna Ferez,Tracy’s daughter, was Maid of Honor; Tim’s oldest daughter Meghan escorted her Grandfather down the aisle; Tim’s daughter Caitlin reminded the happy couple that she was the very reason the couple met; Tim’s daughter Erin reminded the happy couple that she was the first to encourage Tim to ask Tracy out. Cousins from both sides of the family brought photos in loving memory of family members who had passed away. Tracy’s mother passed away 6 years ago, but her spirit was present at the

Kudos to Spokane Club from Tracy and Tim • “The wedding all came together at Spokane Club!” • “Many thanks to Spokane County Commissioner Mary Kuney who made the suggestion to meet with Jackie Kiley, Spokane Club’s Catering Director, for our beautiful wedding!” • “Staff treated us like special family and took extra special care of anything we asked for in order to make it a special occasion to remember.” celebration, aided by Tracy’s dearest friend, Kathy, Tracy’s beautiful new sister in law Janie, and Tracy’s wonderful new mother in law, Bobbi Fitzgerald. “These four amazing, strong women blessed me with their friendship and love for life. I am so forever grateful” Another wonderful highlight of the of the party was celebrating Major General

Bill and Bobbi Fitzgerald’s 60th Wedding Anniversary with a surprise cake cutting ceremony. The wedding and reception of this dynamic couple was a joyful celebration of a truly beautiful love. We wish Tracy and Tim a lifetime of beautiful living and thank them for celebrating their special day with us at Spokane Club.

• “Spokane Club is a great gathering place where our family from all over the county gathered comfortably.” • “We loved that we had everything and everyone in our wedding party in one building.” • “The food was simply outstanding.” • “Accommodations were fabulous, including the use of the gym, the pool and the restaurants for our guests.” • “Bridal Room was ideal for the bridesmaids’ breakfast.” • “Dining Room was a great place for the groom and groomsmen’s breakfast.” • “We had so much wonderful feedback from family and friends who attended the wedding and what a beautiful celebration it was!” Tracy and the Honorable Tim Fitzgerald, Colonel Retired USMC; Spokane County Clerk www.spokaneclub.org | Fall 2019 | 5

3 Ways to Learn Real Life Resilience

By Kate Spencer, Communications Director

R

esilience is the determined buoyancy that comes from living through and beyond the hard times of life. Older? Maybe. Wiser? Hopefully. Stronger? Frequently. We come into the world with a gasp, followed by a cry. From that first cry, to our last breath, we feel both the weight of gravity and the lightness of being, the solace of safety and the thrill of chance. If we are lucky, we have those chances. If we are wise and kind, we pass some of those best chances on to others. Of course, not all hard times are created equal and hardship is often relative. Some people have a meltdown if they break a nail; other people soldier on with a broken foot. The challenge is to not overreact or underreact to stress, but to see it as part of the life story of being human. (And yes, it’s a whole lot easier to be philosophical about stress when it’s not beating down your door.) 6 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2019

Given that we all get our share of hard times, it’s good to have some daily habits that help us find ways to cultivate more resilience. Authentically acknowledging both the upside and downside of life is one of the best ways to ensure that we don’t miss the joy of it when it comes. 1. Stay in the Present We remember the past and imagine the future, but the present is the only time that is actually ours to live. While future thinking, planning and dreaming is important, during challenging, threatening times we often imagine worst-case scenarios of the future. Some of us think doing this prepares us to better deal with the siege. It doesn’t. It just robs us of the present, while planting seeds of fear and doubt of the future. When you find yourself catastrophizing about the future:

• STOP • Close your eyes • Put your hand on your heart • Take a slow deep breath through your nose • Hold that breath for three seconds • Slowly exhale through your lips, like you’re giving a cherished child a big kiss • Reclaim the present • Repeat as many times as you need to • Practice until it becomes second nature to you because, ultimately, peace within ourselves despite our losses or fears, is just a breath away • Remember, things look differently when we take the time to feel things differently 2. Let Others In Given our high capacity to imagine worst case scenarios in life, reality checks are one of the keys to a more peaceful, focused life. Sometimes, however, particularly in times of true crisis, we don’t have the emotional bandwidth to do much reality checking. We are hanging by a shredding thread. Listen. If you find yourself hanging by a shredding thread, this is not the time you want to isolate yourself and be stoic and saint-like. This is not the time that you say no to help. Whether it’s a ride to the hospital or a Happy Meal for your kids, take the good that is offered you in your crisis. Yes, there are people who offer help that secretly (or not so secretly) hope you will say no. Say yes anyway. It’ll do them some good and you some good. In a crisis we need all the good we can get. This is also the time that you honestly, soulfully and sometimes, brazenly ask for help. If you get it, take it. Take the good that is offered to you in your crisis. And yes, it’s often easier to say no to that offer.

In crisis, we are typically scared, sleep-deprived and running on the adrenalin of a Triple gold-winning Olympic medalist insomniac. Seriously, fighting the good fight for life is one of the most adrenaline saturated experiences of being human. Once that fight is won, or lost, when the adrenaline dries up and the fatigue sets in, you’ll be happy you had those helpers. 3. Help Someone Else One day you will find yourself with more energy. You will find yourself looking out the window and seeing a new season. The season will come in its own time. Take that new season as a sign that you have safely made your passage into the next part of your life. Whether you are celebrating a victory or mourning a loss, one day you will see the dawn of morning and know that you have turned the corner and walked back into your life. You will gradually find your strength, your focus and your interests. They may not be the same strengths, the same focus, or the same interests that you had before the siege. But if you open your hand to life, life will take you by the hand and open itself to you. Consider extending your hand to someone who needs the kind of help that was once given to you. Consider what that help meant to you. Then give what you can to whomever needs your help the most. In doing that, you’ll find another, and another, and another hand to hold. And together, you’ll form another perfectly imperfect circle of life. Kate Spencer is the Marketing & Communications Director of the Spokane Club. A Boy, a Hat, and Wayne Gretzky

By Kate Spencer, Communications Director

S

ometimes the best things in life come from the frustrating times that lead up to them. The Kamphuis family was in Spokane for a summer visit in July and staying at the Club Hotel. An error was made on one of their room reservations and they were sorting it out at the Front Desk in the Club Lobby. Tired kids, tired parents, sizzling day.

8 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2019

John O’Connor, the Club’s GM, greeted the family, saw their fatigue and asked what he could do to help them. The family smiled, like true American road trip warriors, and said that things had just been taken care of and all was now well. That’s when John noticed that the youngest child, a bright eyed boy named Joel, was wearing an Oilers hat. John knew that Wayne Gretzky, (yep, THE GREAT ONE), was going to be in town that day and at the Valley Club for a tournament that a family member was playing in. John told young Joel the news and asked if he would like

to have his hat autographed by the legendary hockey star. Joel thought that was a GREAT idea! “Well then, you should write him a letter and I’ll deliver the letter, and your hat, to Mr. Gretzky!” John suggested. Joel was delighted to do just that. Of course, John didn’t know The Great One’s schedule, or how tiny the window of opportunity actually was, or if that window would even work. But John had made a promise to Joel and was bound to keep it. With the help of the awesome Jeff Urie, John got the hat autographed and safely back to the Club. By then, Joel and his family were back on the road and headed for home. On Friday, July 26, John called Joel’s dad to check in on the special delivery. Joel’s dad was delighted to report that the hat had arrived that very morning. Joel was delighted with the Great One’s gift and the family now has sweet memories of their time spent at Spokane Club. Going the extra mile for anyone is special; going the extra mile for a child is a joy. Cheers to the great one in all of us!

Let’s Be Well!

By Christine Cronin; U-District PT

I

n 1972 Dr. Bill Hettler established the wellness wheel. The wellness wheel has six dimensions: spiritual, physical, intellectual, social, emotional and occupational. The World Health Organization (WHO) adds a seventh dimension of “environmental.” Imagine your life is a circle. Like a bicycle wheel, each spoke on that wheel is a dimension of wellness, and to be in harmony with life, we need each spoke.

14 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2019

The spokes on your wheel need to be strong because those spokes are supporting the wheel you’re rolling through life on. Here’s the problem. Some of us have an imbalance in our spokes or are missing them completely. If you are rolling through life on an out-of-balance wheel with missing spokes you’re headed for a crash. Finding balance in your personal wellness wheel and determining what strengthens each spoke is critical for optimal performance in life. Peak Performance is a sports ideal, but I like transferring this concept to life. Who are the peak performers in life you know? Chances are they have a rock solid wellness wheel that helps them roll with the punches and smile while doing it. I head to the Club gym to strengthen the physical spoke on my wellness wheel, and when I arrive I meet up with some good friends. Now I’m improving social and physical at the same time. If one of my friends happens to be a great listener I

can express how I’m feeling without being judged (emotional) and we can motivate each other through encouragement, leading by example and teamwork. All of a sudden we’re accomplishing more than we could have on our own (spirit). It turns out that I can show up at Spokane Club and fill 4 elements of my wellness wheel at once. That’s a high return on an investment! If I add an intellectually stimulating conversation, I’m up to five. With five spokes tuned up you can bet I’m going to perform better at my occupation and when I’m joyful, my environment benefits too. All seven elements have been met from showing up to the gym, bringing my best effort and building community. When we get injured, we may lose a piece of our physical well-being, but what we may not realize is how that impacts our social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual or occupational status--and how that injury now affects our environment. Once we become aware that our well-being is more than just 30 minutes of cardio and eating right, we have the ability to grow and change. We are social beings who need human connection in order to thrive. Empathy is required for connection, which means you’ve got to try to put yourself in another’s shoes and think about how it feels to be them in this experience. Remember, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Are the people you spend the most time with helping you grow? Do they add to or subtract from your wellness wheel? Now that you know a little bit more about wellness, get back to the gym, introduce yourself to someone new, connect with an old friend, engage in an intellectually stimulating conversation and if you’re really brave, share your feelings. Let’s be well together!

Meet Jenny Headley, Fitness Instructor!

The Club has some amazing instructors and one of them is Jenny Headley. A yoga practitioner since 2004, Jenny also worked as a Licensed Massage Practitioner for 10 years before earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology at Eastern Washington University. Along the way, she had a personal awakening. “While passionate about science, I sensed that my true calling was to share my yoga practice with others,” says Jenny. In 2018 Jenny completed her first 200-hour yoga teacher training. Soon after, Jenny was hired by Spokane Club and began to take Barre classes. She loved the classes and the positive impact of cross training with Barre and Yoga. In October 2018, Spokane Club hosted a BarreAbove teaching certification workshop and Jenny added Barre to her teaching repertoire. “I feel so truly blessed to call the Spokane Club home and I invite any members with interest in Yoga or Barre to try any of my classes this fall, all of which are beginner friendly and modifiable to nearly all physical abilities.” www.spokaneclub.org | Fall 2019 | 25

Always interested in personal training, Mike’s travel schedule often made getting that training into his schedule very challenging. “I had always wanted to work with a personal trainer to make me accountable and to instruct me on proper workout form and nutrition,” Mike recalls. “However, I traveled a lot and could never get started with any consistency. That was my excuse anyway.” Then a window opened in Mike’s life and he took the first step in achieving his personal training goal. “At the end of last year I guess the stars aligned,” Mike recalls. “My work travel schedule reduced significantly, I was the most out of shape I had ever been in my life, I didn’t like what I was seeing in the 26 . mirror, and I was committed to making a positive change in my health. I happened to see Taylor one day in the Downtown Club and remembered her from when our paths crossed previously. I asked her about being my personal trainer and I’ve been working with her ever since.” Like most successful training experiences, there was a strong desire for change on the client’s part and a strong desire to empower change on the trainer’s part. Mike was especially impressed with Taylor’s knowledge base. “I knew Taylor was certified and deeply knowledgeable in physiology, anatomy, kinesiology, and nutrition and had prior success with clients of all ages and abilities over the last several

years between California and Spokane. As it turns out, she is also quite a good psychologist too!” “Taylor is a pro. She keeps me motivated. She keeps workouts varied and challenging. She holds me accountable. She has developed a custom program that meets my personal goals and my schedule. And she is not shy about calling me out when I might fall behind or slip up - but in a polite and professional way. She really cares about her clients.” That care shows in Taylor’s programming, which is customized and modified based on the client’s needs, abilities and goals. Mike cites the four most helpful aspects of Taylor’s training as: 1) Taking time to genuinely understand the client’s goals and objectives and any limitations in order to design a customized program. 2) Starting each session with a check-in to understand where the client is physically and mentally that day and modifying the workout to meet specific needs. 3) Introducing new and different exercises to keep the body moving in new, different and challenging ways. 4) Regularly checking in on the client’s goals and as those goals change, to ensure that the program designed for the client is still helping them achieve their goals. Mike continues to steadily meet and exceed his goals. “My initial goal at the start of the year was to lose 10 pounds. Working with Taylor since the start of the year, I’m now down over 40 pounds and feeling great. I am in better shape. I’m sleeping better and I have more energy and a clearer mind.” Change inspires change. New goals, new habits and increased levels of fitness set the bar for further growth. Mike’s goals are to maintain what he has been able to achieve so far and to expand his

Fitness | personal training

reach. “I’m still working on changing some bad habits and trying to stay on track with workouts. But I’m in it for the long haul.” Beyond fitness goals, Mike has some powerful, personal goals too and part of that means passing on his knowledge to his kids. “I’m trying to slowly introduce what I’ve learned to my three teenage girls at home. I’m really trying to create a positive environment that not only helps me support my goals but can have a positive impact on those close to me as well. And of course, to make good food choices, and to keep moving!

Back in the Game: Member Bruce Hunt and Trainer Erin Pibor

T

ennis, and an active lifestyle, has been part of Bruce Hunt’s life for years. When Bruce and his wife Mary Ruth Carleton relocated to Spokane from Southern California, they knew they wanted to join Spokane Club and become part of its dynamic community. For Bruce especially, this meant getting back to tennis, the game he loves. “I am a tennis player recovering from an injury,” says Bruce. “I thought that

after many weeks of PT and other treatments I should use a trainer to get in better shape in order to resume playing tennis. Since part of the benefits of joining the Club was a complimentary evaluation by a trainer, it made it easy to take the first step.” A seasoned tennis player and USTA administrator for years, Bruce well knew the benefits of utilizing trained and certified pros. He sought that same expertise in a personal trainer. “I read the bios of the personal trainers posted in the fitness room at the Club and identified several of them that I wanted to ask questions about their

style, experience with tennis players, etc. I bumped into Erin during one of my workouts and after our first conversation I decided to try a few sessions with her. It helped that she had worked with other recreational and collegiate level tennis players.” The two have formed a solid team, made great progress and had fun doing it. “Erin has made the workouts fun because of her personality and enthusiasm, says Bruce “She has asked a lot of questions to understand my injury and temporary limitations in order to create the appropriate menu of exercises for me. She has been patient with me while I improved my strength, balance, agility and flexibility so I can keep playing tennis.” Best of all, Bruce is back in the game and feeling great! “I have been taking part in tennis clinics at the Club, made some new friends and rediscovered the joy of hitting the tennis ball,” says Bruce. “I am in much better shape and feel like I am continuing to improve. I’ll be playing in the leagues that start up later this Fall.” Equipped with new goals and solid training habits, Bruce is dedicated to expanding and growing his beloved game. “Erin has helped me realize that I need to continue to train regularly to maintain the fitness level I need to enjoy tennis.” Keep up the great work, Bruce!! Why Water?

The Properties of water allow for many benefits to your overall health and wellness.

NEW! At the VALLEY POOL

Aqua4Balance and YOU

This class is specifically designed to enhance your overall balance and strength. As a “mindful water exercise class, we will be working on improving ROM and strength in back, hips, knees and ankles. Each class will be working through various walking, movement patterns, and dynamic balance training challenges. In Aqua4Balance and YOU core awareness and stabilization is learned and practiced. Ai Chi is one form of water therapy that allows YOU to engage core muscles throughout the flow of a coordinated movement. We will be learning and practicing Ai Chi throughout the session to enhance this mind/body connection. Resgister for class by contacting Chris Barry at cbarry@spokaneclub.org or by calling 459-4571 x512. Meet your Instructor: Patricia Benjamin Patricia is a water aerobics instructor at the Downtown Club and has been teaching water exercise classes for accumulative of 15 years. In 2010 she became an Aquatic Fitness Professional through AEA. She has a wealth of practical experience and knowledge through continuing education at regional and international workshops and conferences. Most recently she acquired her Aquatic Therapy and Rehabilitation Institute Certification through ATRI. Her aim and purpose is to help YOU achieve success through progressions of movement that improve balance and strength that is transferable to your everyday activities. 34 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Fall 2019

Buoyancy allows for off-loading of joints for less impact. Joints that have arthritis, or are in need of pre or post rehabilitation find ease in movement. Pain relief can be felt upon immersion as the joint capsules float and tendons move more freely. Buoyancy can also create imbalances in stability, which challenges your vestibular system to make adjustments when walking, starting and stopping movement. Viscosity of the water creates the resistance or load on the musculature for overall muscle balance. Land exercise has one resistance (gravity) and joint angle must be changed to target specific muscle for strength. In water, there is 360 degrees of resistance which allows the muscles to be strengthened in pairs. The core or trunk of the body is challenged through every well-coordinated movement. Hydrostatic pressure of the water dilates veins, arteries, and capillaries sending blood more efficiently to the heart for oxygenation and for activation of neuromuscular response. Warm water is soothing and relaxing. The feel of the water on your skin activates the somatic system to calm and slow breaths. Warmer water also makes stiff joints and sore muscles feel at ease during movement.
