Use Your Club for Life!

By Chris Bell, Board Chair

I

love this season at the Spokane Club. It is all about traditions. Our family has enjoyed creating new traditions over the last few months dropping our son off in childcare and sweating it out in Cardio Tennis or for football gamedays, heading to the Club Restaurant to enjoy a relaxed, delicious Sunday breakfast and soak in all the different football games with friends. The upcoming season is steeped in Club traditions. Thanksgiving buffet, Gin Fizz Luncheon, Gingerbread House Night, Ugly Sweater Dodge Ball Tourney, Old English Dinner and everyone’s favorite, Tom & Jerry Member Appreciation. There is no better time to get down to the Club to celebrate the season with family and friends. What are your favorite Club traditions? Share your favorites on the Spokane Club Facebook page with #Spokane Club Traditions. This time of year can leave schedules packed with activities, leaving little time to plan and prepare. Let the Club make it easier and more enjoyable for you. In-laws or out of town guests for the holidays? Invite your guests to stay at the Club in one of the newly remodeled hotel rooms. Have a crowd over for 2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Winter 2017

Thanksgiving but need to work on your trick plays for your neighborhood Turkey Bowl? Call the Club and order Thanksgiving Dinner to go. Snow or rain giving you the excuse to miss 9:30am PIYO group fitness class? Call the Club and have the Club Courtesy Car sent to pick you up at your office downtown so you don’t miss your workout. The Club is here to make your life easier. If you can dream it up, Club staff will do what they can to accommodate your requests.

I have had the Club cater a breakfast at my wife’s workplace to celebrate the premiere of her tv show Good Day on Fox, organize a guided fishing trip including lunch and transportation to and from the river, tasty weeknight dinners off the menu to go, and even order and send flowers. It is your Club, use it. You just need to ask. A quick update on Club operations, we are thrilled to welcome John O’Connor as the new Club General Manager. John will be a fixture at the Club during the holidays. Please be sure to introduce yourself to John, welcome him to the Club, and share with him what you love about your Club. Happy holidays. I will see you at the Club.

Meet John O’Connor, General Manager of the Spokane Club

F

or more than 20 years, John O’Connor’s passion for excellence in the hospitality, hotel, health and fitness industries has driven both his career and his life. A Colorado native who never lost his wonder of the mountains and the sky, John’s leadership roles have taken him from Chicago to Albuquerque and well beyond. The next great chapter of his life will be written as General Manager of the Spokane Club. “John has demonstrated a commitment to elevating the member experience while leading diverse business units in a fiscally responsible way,” says Chris Bell, Chairman of the Spokane Club Board. Most recently, John served as General Manager of the Buckingham Club, an upscale city club in downtown Chicago. This full-service athletic, social and dining club offers many of the amenities of 4 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Winter 2017

the Spokane Club. Prior to that, John was the General Manager of the Club at Corazon, a private club in Dublin, Ohio. The Corazon offers resort-style amenities to its members, including tennis, athletics, restaurant, banquet services, outdoor pools, wedding and banquet services, and a spa.

“John has demonstrated a commitment to elevating the member experience while leading diverse business units in a fiscally responsible way,” says Chris Bell, Chairman of the Spokane Club Board.

Other notable clubs John has managed that speak to his understanding and appreciation of the multi-faceted world of club management include: Kayak Chicago, New Mexico Sports and Wellness, Fitness Formula Clubs, North Pier Athletic Club and the Lasalle Club. As the new General Manager of the Spokane Club, John will continue his career mission of creating the very finest experience for members and guests, while building an inclusive and dynamic workplace for staff. An avid sports and outdoors fan, John understands the meaning of teamwork and its importance in creating and maintaining meaningful results, long term success and fiscal responsibility. His enthusiasm, grounded in hard work and proven results, is contagious. “The Spokane Club is the members’ club and it represents so much more than just a membership. It’s a very real and true sense of connection to history, community and a literal sum of its parts. There is something really special about that. The passion and connection of the Club’s members provides a unique opportunity to carry on the legacy of the Spokane Club for future generations.”

The future generation in John’s own life includes the four children that he and his wife, Kelly, have raised and grown into amazing young adults: Jen (age 25), twins Megan and Cat (age 24) and Danny (age 22). Married for 27 years, John and Kelly look forward to new adventures, and enjoying the great outdoors of our beautiful Inland Northwest. “Spokane is really an attractive place with a great lifestyle. This city, built on a river by industrious people, partially destroyed by a fire, and re-built stronger by those same people, has a great legacy and one that’s very reminiscent of another favorite city of mine, Chicago. The Spokane Club has played an important role in Spokane’s history and heritage. My role as General Manager gives me the opportunity to honor the past, produce in the present and prepare for the future.” Part of that future also involves securing the present. For John, that means meeting the needs of a diverse Club membership demographic, staying relevant while keeping traditions alive, retaining our current members, and continuing to grow our membership. A huge factor in achieving these goals is the preparedness and responsiveness of Spokane Club staff. “I believe 100% in nurturing good and talented people to find something inside them that will ignite curiosity about what is possible. My belief is that a GM is only as good as the people around him or her. By allowing staff to have an understanding of the challenges, they will feel more invested in the successes. My ability to include, not exclude, will be an asset to the challenges we face. And I challenge everyone—employees and members—to find their passion and bring that to the Club each day.” It’s the very same challenge that John presents to himself on a daily basis.

His work motto, “The Obstacle is the Way” is inspired by the book of the same name by Ryan Holiday. A voracious reader, this particular book’s message resonates with John’s commitment to turning adversity to advantage. He often finds inspiration and strength for the challenge in his love of the outdoors and creative hobbies. “Growing up in Denver, I have always appreciated what ‘the outdoors’ really is. I love to find adventure and truly believe that the road less traveled is usually more interesting. Hiking, kayaking, and paddle

boarding are great fun for me. I’m also really interested in photography, reading great books, and watching Dancing With The Stars. I’m a huge sports fan—the Denver Broncos and Chicago Cubs are in my heart—and I enjoy pretty much anything life has to offer.” Please join us in welcoming the Club’s new General Manager, John O’Connor! To send John a welcoming message, please email joconnor@spokaneclub.org. Look for news on the upcoming meet and greet gatherings with John O’Connor in your Club emails.

Meet David McDowell, Spokane Club Controller

By Kate Spencer, Marketing & Communications Director

S

ince he first came onboard as Interim CFO with the Spokane Club in May of this year, David McDowell has been a strong financial leader and advocate for the Club. His cheerful, outgoing personality doesn’t fit the stereotype of a CPA, but his intelligence and dedication to best practices—and results— are those of a first class professional. How he applies those strengths, and get results, is a win-win for the Club. “I’m committed to moving the Spokane Club operations in a positive direction by establishing a high degree of transparency and management information to improve the cost of what we do. My broad experience with a wide variety of organizations can be applied to operating the many departmental businesses within the greater Club.” A licensed CPA with a Bachelor of Science in Business Accounting from the University of Idaho, Moscow, David is also a member of the Order of Omega and Chapter Luminary of Delta Chi Fraternity. Previous positions include Director of Business and Operations for Lakeland

Joint School District; Finance Director for Kootenai County; Controller for the Coeur d/Alene Tribe; and Controller for the Corporation of the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle. Future goals and benchmarks he sees for the Spokane Club are “moving operations to a more successful level where the members and employees can be assured and excited about the efforts and results that are generated. And also, establishing processes to provide meaningful information for decision making and management reporting.”

David was initially hired by the Club as an Interim CFO and was represented by Robert Half & Associates, a staffing agency that provides professional services on a long or short term, temporary basis. For the Club, however, David possessed the kind of financial talent and superior work ethic that came just at the right time. David was offered the full time staff position of Controller this month and is delighted with both the professional challenge and the personal interactions with members and staff that make the Club such a great place to be. The first Club event David and his wife, Jill, attended was a Cellar Dwellers offering, which both of them thoroughly enjoyed. The couple lives in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and are the parents of three children, TJ, Kelly and Megan. David sees great opportunities for the Club, both in its relationship with the management team of KemperSports, and in maintaining and growing financial stability along with a new, wider array of member amenities and benefits. (For more on new member benefits for Spokane Club members, see page 6). “I see our greatest opportunities at the Club in focusing our energies on providing high quality experiences for our members. Of equal importance is re-energizing a productive team environment that provides facilities and services that encourage members to use their club and its services.” Like most people, what David enjoys most about the Club is both its rich history and the people who make the present such a pleasure to share. “Working with a dedicated staff and having the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards the success of the Club serves as great inspiration to me and to the vision of the Club’s future.” www.spokaneclub.org | Winter 2017 | 7

Got Lit? Get Connected with Fellow Club Writers! By Kate Spencer, Marketing & Communications Director

W

hether you’re a published author or an aspiring writer, having a sense of community and support goes a long way in helping you realize your creative dreams. And in the case of Got Lit, a Spokane Club-based writers’ group, it just might involve a great dinner, too. “Some would say we’re foodies masquerading as a writers group,” says Rick Boal, the writing group’s fearless leader, a role he shares with Bob Gilles. “All of our meetings begin with a shared dinner, beer and wine!” But that’s just the warm up round for what’s to come. “We are an impetus for each other and share our opinions of the writing presented, as far as what does or doesn’t work, offering an editing axe, correcting grammar and the like. We discuss the challenges and rewards in a writing piece, rather than it being good or bad. That said, we don’t hesitate to be honest.” All of the current members of the group are fiction and poetry writers, with most of the members having published a book of fiction or poetry. Many in the group have also published shorter pieces in literary magazines, in The Inlander’s short fiction contest or

raditions

other literary contests. Currently, most of the group members are working on novels, short stories and poems, along with a few non-fiction pieces. If you are interested in joining the group, please contact Bob Gilles at rgilles@gillesrealty.com or Rick Boal at rcboal@gmail.com.

Upcoming Meeting Dates Thursday, November 9 December -Meeting will take place off-site Thursday, January 11 Thursday, February 8 Second Thursday of the Month Contact Robert Gilles, 939-6420 for details.

Cyndi Donahue, Membership Director By Kate Spencer, Marketing & Communications Director

M

any Spokane Club members know Cyndi as the woman who teaches them to stretch in new directions, find muscles they didn’t know they had, and embrace yoga as their best, calming friend. In her new role as Membership Director, Cyndi will continue to encourage members to discover their best life, while invigorating the life of the Club itself with new members and new services and amenities that enhance both the lives of our members and of the Club itself. She is fully aware of the challenges and the rewards of this work. “The Club’s greatest strength is the connection of our members, both to each other and to their history with the Club. It is our community that makes the Club the amazing place that it is. Our challenge is to honor our history and the classic nature of the Club, while also having the agility and open mindedness to change. We have to be better- to have the best service, programs and networking – for us to have a bright future together.” Beyond Cyndi’s understanding of the mindset of positive change in the body, she also has an impressive depth of experience in the business 16 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Winter 2017

world. Born and raised in Manhattan Beach, California, Cyndi is a graduate of University of California, Santa Barbara. She is the former Assistant to the Chairman at Friedman, Fleisher & Lowe Equity in San Francisco, where among her responsibilities were managing investor relationships and details of all business enterprises for the Chairman of the Board, as well as designing presentations and superior events across the U.S. to maintain corporate image and increase brand awareness to specific investor groups. Prior to that, Cyndi was the Director of Marketing for Hearthstone Private Equity Builders in San Francisco, where

she managed creation and distribution of collateral materials to potential investors, as well as organizing large investor conferences and corporate events nationwide. Other positions Cyndi has held include Development Marketing Manager for Snowvball.com, Account Manager for Proctor and Gamble, and Account Executive for Clear Channel Communications. One of Cyndi’s most important personal life roles is being a mother. It was this role that brought her to Spokane as a first-time parent and inspired Cyndi to create a new career pathway that allowed her to balance her family commitments, while delving deeper into the world of wellness at the Spokane Club. “I am so grateful for my family. I remarried two years ago, and my husband and two children are the greatest gift I’ve been given. And yoga. Practicing and teaching yoga makes me smile from the inside out!” Cyndi sees young families as one of the top demographics for membership growth, along with business leaders looking for a dynamic place to connect and network. And uppermost in her mind is retaining all the wonderful members who already call the Spokane Club their home away from home. “We are all tied together, members and staff, and we are all on the membership team. Our Club staff should offer the best service and keep in mind that we are the caretakers of our members ‘second home’. Members can help by offering constructive ideas and staying open to the changes ahead. Most of all, members can help by referring their friends, neighbors and family. We have a fantastic Legacy program for family members who want to join our Club community!”

Strength of Mind

By Christine Cronin, PT

H

ow’s your mental health? Are you feeling nervous, defensive or uncomfortable with my question? Many of us are uncomfortable when asked that question, seeing it as something different than being asked about our physical health. When you read that question do you associate the term “mental health” with illness, other people, weakness or negativity? In reality, mental health concerns all of us. Excellent mental health should be a priority for each of us and getting past any impediments to open dialogue about it is important. So let’s give it a new name: Strength of mind. In my work as a physical therapist, I have the privilege of working with a well-educated and financially stable demographic of society. Yet, when asked about stress management techniques, even those we assume know better are at a loss for an answer. Most people, often jokingly, respond with “alcohol or exercise.” Though these are both options, one of those options is clearly far more ideal than the other. The good news is that there are in fact many options for both stress management and building strength of mind, many of which are free and easily accessible.

There is more and more research coming out linking pain and injury to stress levels in our lives. When our body is stressed, our sympathetic nervous system kicks in to “fight or flight mode” and we forego posture, digestion, and sleep to name a few, for the ability to fight or run from the perceived threat. We used to run from saber tooth tigers, now just the thought of impending bills, a confrontation at work, or any other perceived threat can send us into that response. Our body cannot heal itself, recover or rest when it is in this mode. In contrast, when we are relaxed and enjoying life, we kick in the parasympathetic portion of our nervous system which helps us rest and digest. During this mode our body works really well making the necessary reparations and restorations it can magically do on its own. Yet, what I see is an increasing number of people who never allow themselves to get into this magical state. Partly because we are “too busy,” lack self-awareness, or have no idea of how to reduce our own stress levels. I myself am “too busy.” Yet, with the little time I have I purposefully engage in activities I know are restoring to me. There is great evidence to support the

benefit of regular exercise, healthy eating, and spending time with loved ones, to reduce overall stress and improve mental health and resiliency. Resiliency is a beautiful word, one that I hold dear. Being strong has nothing to do with not expressing emotion, and could in fact be part of the reason an initial injury becomes chronic pain. I am strong because I can ask for help. I am stronger yet because I can identify when I’m struggling and know whom to seek help from. Three of my personal favorite tips for strength of mind are: Practicing gratitude daily, mindfulness, and positive selftalk. If you can start having that voice in your head focusing on what you want in life and saying encouraging things to you and others, you might smile a little more. Our thoughts are the first step to taking action, and our thoughts control which nervous system we choose, whether to fight and run or find peace and heal. Today, reach out to a friend, and have a meaningful conversation, encourage yourself, be grateful for something and be aware of your thoughts. If you find you are suffering from feelings of hopelessness or despair, please contact your doctor and get professional help. Find strength of mind, and watch as everything else follows.

Pain, Mindfulness & Wellness Workshop Come learn about the new research on physical pain and stress levels in your life and how mindfulness and other techniques can lead to decreased pain and improved overall wellness. Presented by Christine Cronin, DPT, SCS and Cyndi Donahue, E-RYT, CPT Tuesday, January 9; 12:00 – 1:00 pm; $10* (*plus tax) www.spokaneclub.org | Winter 2017 | 29
