Your Spokane Club Board Officers Trish McFarland, Board Chairman After months of healthy dialogue, the Board voted unanimously to install a small monthly assessement for each of us that will generate additional cash flow for capital improvements only. This is the fairest way to make an impact on our facilities. We will see improvements that all will be proud of. This is a very small investment from each, with huge gains for all. I wish we had done this years ago. Chris Bell, Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect I support the Club implementing a Capital Assessment program as a fiscally responsible way for staff to have a dedicated revenue source to address the deferred maintenance items the Club can no longer afford to put off. I love the Club and want to see it thrive for the next 100 years. I want my kids to be able to enjoy the benefits I have received from the Club. That is why I support the Capital Assessment program. I feel there is an energy at the Club I haven’t experienced before. Updated hotel rooms, energized Club Restaurant, exciting athletic programming for the whole family to enjoy. The monthly Capital Assessment will allow us to build on these positive changes and see the Club thrive in the next century. Nancy Vorhees, Past Board Chair I support the Capital Assessment decision as a way to maintain the longtime integrity of the Spokane Club. It’s like road maintenance – if you don’t maintain and repair the roads on a regular basis, then you’re stuck with a major rebuild. It’s the same with the Spokane Club’s buildings and equipment. We need to maintain them or else we’ll face a major rebuild at a significantly higher cost. We need the Capital Assessment to keep our buildings and equipment at a superior status. Pat DeVries, Treasurer This is a decision whose time has come and waiting longer will only increase the issues. The historic clubhouse is clearly showing its age and anyone who owns a home knows there is a lot more to upkeep than meets the eye. I have been a member for many years and am now in my third year as a Board member. In the short time I have been on the Board, I have found this to be serious work and keeping a Club going is no easy task. There is a critical need to invest funds to maintain this great institution in Spokane. From the outside façade, to mechanical systems, and so on, there is much to do and we need to make the financial investment to insure the Spokane Club is here for our future generations of members. Anne Marie Axworthy Secretary As a Board member, I have confidence that the question of capital assesment has been deeply vetted by leadership — both the Board and staff. The facts are compelling as we face severe long-term facilities maintenance issues coupled with significant operational expense increases that go beyond the scope of the diligent cost savings already implemented by our staff. In order to serve our current members and assure future membership growth, it’s imperative we invest in the legacy of the Spokane Club’s value to our families, staff and our community. A dedicated capital fund is a critical component both to our fiscal health and our investment in the future of our Club. Dan Kuney, Officer at Large We need a temporary boost to get the Club up to standard. I trust Stacie and her team to execute this plan with great care and put the Club in position to be successful for decades to come.

2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2017

Dear Members, 2017 is the kick start year to the next 100 years of stability and growth of our Spokane Club. As your Club Board, we know it will take a team effort, with every one of our members playing a vital role in the care--and the enjoyment--of our great Club. Together, we will make it happen! Our work is twofold: First, to repair and maintain our facilities and second, to continue to upgrade in order to retain and grow our membership. Historically, this work has been a challenging proposition and current circumstances have increased that challenge exponentially. As early as 1980, the Club had a substantial need for capital improvements over and above the funds that could be generated through dues and Club operations. Nearly 40 years later, with decades of deferred maintenance, the need has significantly grown. In addition to the longstanding Capital project needs and the impact of deferred maintenance, recent changes to local and federal labor laws have created new challenges for the Club. Changes in minimum wage and employee sick leave laws’ impact to the Club is over $300K annually. This forces the Club to reduce the amount of money previously committed from Operations to Capital projects. These Capital needs are legacy issues of long standing. In the present day, it’s important for us as a Board to acknowledge the great progress the Club’s

CEO and her team have made. This work includes significant and diligent cost-savings across the board including: Food & Beverage costs of goods are down by 10%, Valley expenses are down 11%, and overall costs at Downtown Club are down 5%. In addition, Membership has stabilized and we have a positive number of members for this fiscal year for the first time in years. However, present progress is not enough to bridge the long-term gap between capital projects and the capital funding needed to execute on them. Given all of these circumstances, your Spokane Club Board of Trustees has unanimously approved a Capital Assessment program to begin March 1, 2017 and to run for 5 years. The Capital Assessment will be $25 per month and appear on your monthly statement. We believe this monthly fee is a reasonable amount that will not overburden member households. Capital Assessments are completely separate from Membership dues. All funds from Capital Assessments will be kept in a separate account and be used solely for Capital projects. Examples of capital projects can be found on page 4. This 5-year plan is based on our current 2,451 memberships and equates to $3,676,500. If you choose to donate additional funds or pay the full five years in advance, you will receive special recognition on a plaque that will be proudly displayed in the Clubhouse Lobby. In our research of Capital Assessment programs, we spoke with 17 private clubs that have implemented such

programs. We learned that Capital Assessments are rapidly becoming a best practice among historical clubs, given the increased cost and complexity of repairs associated with them. All of the clubs we spoke with felt that the implementation of Capital Assessments strengthened both their members’ enjoyment and engagement with their clubs, as well as fortifying the future of their clubs. We believe the same positive outcome—and future—will prevail at the Spokane Club. Our Capital Impact Project Survey of 2016 showed the majority of our Club members were in favor of Capital improvements. The additional challenges presented to us in 2017, and noted in this letter, make the implementation of Capital Assessment a clear and present priority. Look for more information on the Capital Assessment Program in your email inbox and posted around the Club facilities. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Board Officers. Their email addresses are available on the Club website at: Spokaneclub.org/business, or contact our CEO, Stacie Harper at sharper@ spokaneclub.org. We thank you for your membership to the Spokane Club. Together, we will build a legacy for the next 100 years. Sincerely, Your Spokane Club Board www.spokaneclub.org | Spring 2017 | 3

The First Year in Review By Stacie Harper, CEO

J

ust one year ago I accepted the position of CEO of the Spokane Club. As the Club’s first female CEO, I was honored by the confidence placed in me by the Board and the CEO Selection Committee, and delighted to help shape and grow the future of this iconic organization. One year later, that sense of honor and delight has only deepened, like good relationships do over the gifts, and the tests, of time. I was officially introduced to the membership in the March/April 2016 issue of Signals. In that article, with regards to the challenges the Club faces, I stated that “the greatest challenge will certainly be the age of the Downtown clubhouse facility.” That challenge hasn’t changed, and it has been compounded by other issues that you will read about in the Board’s Letter to Members on page 3. In the face of our challenges, there is tremendous stabilization and growth that has occurred in this first year. I want to celebrate this progress with you because each of our members, our leadership, and our staff are an integral part of what makes this success possible. For your support, feedback and ongoing dialogue, you have my sincere thanks and appreciation. 6 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2017

Larkin Barnett, Club Instructor, Shines in Pilates Style! By Kate Spence, Editor in Chief

L

arkin Barnett moves with the grace of a lifetime dancer, the flexibility of a yoga master, and the posture of a devoted Pilates professional. This dynamic combination, coupled with her passion for helping people find their highest level of physical and emotional fitness, is what makes her a star on the national Pilates scene and a beloved instructor at the Spokane Club. Larkin was recently featured in the January/February issue of

Pilates Style magazine, a national publication devoted to health, strength and wellbeing using the Pilates method. In this issue, Larkin shared her own journey of wellness and her remarkable Barnett Formula, a movement and breathing technique that isolates each abdominal layer to access the deep core muscles, while simultaneously helping to manage stress and anxiety. To read the entire article, go to: www.pilatesstyle.com/2017/ exercises/find-center-center-life.

Born in Spokane, Larkin has traveled the world in her quest to share her message of wellness, working with Olympic athletes, international celebrities, business professionals, families and people recovering from illnesses and injuries. Along the way, she earned a Master of Art degree in Dance, became a Nautilus award-winning author, produced award-winning DVDs, and became an international speaker and Pilates Teacher Trainer. “We are proud and honored to have Larkin as a Club instructor,” says Sandi Wasteney, the Club’s Group Fitness Manager “Throughout her career, Larkin has generously shared her dynamic techniques and vast education with people from all walks of life. She is so willing to share her vast knowledge to benefit the health and lives of our Club members.”

Larkin currently teaches two classes at the Club. You can attend her Pilates Core Class on Tuesdays at 10:45 and her Functional Fitness class on Thursday at 10:45.

The Power of Accountability

Christine Cronin and Norm Brown cheering each other on By Christine Cronin, PT

I

t started three years ago, when a friend mentioned he should work out one more day per week. I suggested we work out together on Friday mornings, it being a mutual time that fit into our schedules, and knowing I would exercise anyway. I figured I might as well get up early and help a friend. Somewhere in that first year I began to realize I was no longer helping a friend, I was helping myself. The Friday routine had become just that, and though it was never easy to wake up early in the dark, I had someone and something that was worth waking for.

Through my Friday workouts I’ve learned the power of an accountability partner. 24 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2017

I’m fairly competitive, and I found that knowing I would have my Friday workout inspired me to do more in my week so as to be better on Friday. I started setting more fitness goals than I would have on my own. I started

lifting weights again as that mode fit our partnership well. I started feeling strong again, and then one day, one perfect day, I felt powerful again. Three children in four years takes a toll, and to be able to build back that which had broken down was a slow process. Perhaps it wouldn’t have happened, or at least not nearly as quickly or joyfully, without Fridays. For some reason I’m quite enamored with the pull up, it seems to represent such an incredible feat of strength. I’ve decided I should try to do 10, it seems just difficult enough to be almost impossible, and I knew I would need help. Through my Friday workouts I’ve learned the power of an accountability partner. I sought out Norm. If you don’t know Norm Brown, you should probably take a minute to meet him. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Norm and his incredible wife Bernie are both retired FBI agents and the epitome of physical fitness, inspiration and truly wonderful people. If my husband and I get to be like Norm and Bernie 30 years from now, life will be good. Norm is my Spokane Club accountability partner, upon arriving at the Club he tells me to come find him

Mindfulness & Meditation

and we will do our pull ups or push-ups, or both. Together we are becoming stronger in ways we both thought were part of our past. Perhaps it’s not that you don’t know what to do, but finding the person who will hold you accountable. Focus on finding a class, a partner, or meeting someone at the gym that is there at a similar time as you. For someone like me, these accountability partners have taken me to my highest level of fitness, a confidence and strength I could not have achieved on my own. For those of you just starting out, an accountability partner may be the person who helps exercise finally become a habit. Anything that’s achieved together is more meaningful than something done alone. Focus on people this year, the right ones, the ones you want to be like, and watch as you start becoming what you want to see. It wasn’t until I learned to ask for help that I became stronger than ever.

Daily stress and the anxiety it produces can be calmed by the practice of meditation. Mindfulness training is a proven strategy to help decrease your physical and mental reactions to the ups and downs of life. In this special workshop, you will learn techniques to focus on your breathing and thoughts to become more mentally present every day. Better Balance with U-District Finding Balance! Learn how to improve your actual balance, as well as the balance in your exercise program itself. The Club is Pleased to Welcome Personal Trainers, Amy Black and Amy Yeoman

Welcome Amy Black! What drew you, and keeps you interested in, the field of health and fitness? During my college years, I experienced first-hand how empowering it is to take control and make choices to cause the change I wanted to see in my body and how that affected other things in my life. I knew from that point forward I had do what I could to share that knowledge, inspiration, and support with others who have decided, for whatever reason, to do the work to make changes to live longer, healthier, more functional lives. What do you bring to your clients’ experience that’s uniquely yours, either in how you train, or the spirit in which you train, or both. I bring my whole self, my education, and wide variety of experience to every client experience. Each person is uniquely individual and may require a little different tool from what I call my “trainer toolbox.” I bring my education, which is the first tool in my toolbox where I built a 26 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2017

foundation of knowledge in strength, conditioning, biomechanics, and sports medicine working with a variety of college athletes from soccer to swimming to football to hockey, assessing and rehabbing chronic & traumatic injuries. I bring the hundreds of intense hours studying and practicing all of the STOTT Pilates techniques and principles to better understand and then teach how to move from a different perspective. I bring the emergency medical experience of being an EMT in the fire service for the last ten years. I bring an understanding of a unique sort of functional fitness that I gained as a full-time firefighter. I know that our bodies and minds can do more than we imagine possible because I have seen and experienced it firsthand. I believe what is most important is to create a more durable body and mind to endure and rise above what life throws at us at any given moment. All of these experiences are in my “trainer toolbox” and come with me to every training session, which allows me to have versatility in how I work with each person, whether it’s helping someone learn how to stand from a sitting position without assistance, explaining how changing the angle of a joint is all that is needed to reduce pain in a particular

movement, or coaching someone to drag a dummy weighing twice their body weight 100 feet to “safety”, while wearing 60lbs of gear, in a fire training drill. How do you define success in terms of client outcomes from your training/classes? What do you see as the subtle successes that sometimes don’t register on the scale? Success comes in a wide variety forms. Sometimes it’s obvious and sometimes it’s very subtle. Some of the subtle successes I enjoy are when a client comes in and tells me (with a surprised look on their face) that their doctor took them off, or reduced their dose, of a particular medication; when I see someone truly learn, or understand, something pivotal in their training creating an “ah-ha” moment that they will take with them from that moment on; when I see a better range of motion or a particular movement without pain that was there before. This is what creates more durable minds and bodies. Usually, they are small, unexpected, positive changes that are the most impactful and rewarding for them and for me. Success is in the “ah-ha moments” knowing that I contributed to that person living longer, healthier, and more functionally day-to-day. What do you most enjoy and value most about the Spokane Club and hope to contribute here? The Spokane Club has some of the most enjoyable members and trainers. I’m always running into friendly people with a smile on their face. I’ve never seen or felt the judgment that happens at so many other gyms/clubs. Our trainers are friendly with each other, sharing information and support instead of competing with each other. I truly enjoy being part of a great team and hope I can bring something of value.

rather than feel limited by the health they have lost.

Welcome Amy Yeoman! What drew you, and keeps you interested in, the field of health and fitness? My journey in health and fitness began when I started running. I quickly realized that what I ate affected how I felt, not only during my runs but also throughout the rest of my day. As I began to take control of my own health and fitness, I felt more empowered as an individual and this began to spread to all areas of my life. I love helping people see this in their own lives and help to guide them through their own health journey. I think health is a gift and most areas of life depend heavily on our state of health and I love watching people rediscover what it feels like to be able to do something because of the health they have gained,

“I love watching people rediscover what it feels like to be able to do something because of the health they have gained, rather than feel limited by the health they have lost.”

What do you bring to your clients’ experience that’s uniquely yours, either in how you train, or the spirit in which you train, or both. I think it is very important to keep training simple, fun and individualized. There is constantly new research coming out about what is the newest and best way to train. While I think its important to stay up to date, I feel that for most people, getting them moving in a way that they enjoy and that works well for them will lead to long-term success. I also try to take a well-rounded approach. Fitness is only one component of health. I like to talk to my clients about diet and I like to understand who they are and what is important to them so that I can encourage and guide them in other areas of health as well. How do you define success in terms of client outcomes from your training/classes? What do you see as the subtle successes that sometimes don’t register on the scale? I am all about long term success and sustainable habits, but I also think it is important to recognize small feats. The funny thing with fitness is the more fit someone gets, the more they can push

themselves, so exercise doesn’t ever seem to get easier because they can push themselves harder. Because of this, I think it is an important part of my job to point out small improvements that my clients are making. I often find myself telling a client “You used to not be able to do that,” or “That movement is looking more natural,” or even “That is heavier than the last time you did this.” I believe there are always small successes to celebrate, and in order to achieve long-term changes it is crucial to notice the small successes along the way. What do you most enjoy and value most about the Spokane Club and hope to contribute here? I really enjoy the people at the Spokane Club. Every person I have come in contact with has been genuine, respectful and fun–and I love that! I also think the Spokane Club has great opportunities for members to take advantage of which is something that I like to be a part of. With that, I hope to contribute my expertise of nutrition by offering individualized nutrition counseling to our Spokane Club members. With this and the personal training, I ultimately hope to help the members of the Spokane Club be healthier, happier and more empowered individuals.

50th Annual Lilac Handball Tournament Recap 80 plus Players from Canada, California, Montana and other states made the journey to Spokane to play in the 50th Annual Lilac Tournament. We showcased our hospitality with food put on by the Spokane Club all weekend long including Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner for over a 100 people. Cash prizes were given out as a Lilac first to all divisions. Club sponsors donated over four thousand dollars to the success of the Lilac. The Spokane Club has such a great reputation that individuals from around the state who did not even play or are not even members donated money to the event. This year’s Lilac was at full capacity with four courts housing games from early morning to night. There were many compliments from people who travel from all over the country and say the Lilac Handball Tournament is the best handball tournament they have ever attended. Three common compliments were first, that the food was outstanding and the menu change offered a variety of delicious dishes all weekend long! Also a nice welcome addition was a hot breakfast buffet Saturday and Sunday mornings. Second, hospitality from the moment of checking in was well organized, with friendly catering staff and outstanding volunteers ready to extend our Spokane Club Hospitality, and third, competitive matches. This year’s draw of talented athletes made the tournament exciting to play in and enjoyable to watch. Thank you to all our sponsors and everyone involved with the 50th Grand Lilac Handball Tournament, see you next year! 30 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2017

Why Try Paddleboard Classes? The current hot fitness trend across the nation, paddleboard classes are a new and exciting way to get a full body workout! We have added two formats: Paddleboard Yoga and Paddleboard Fitness. Paddleboard Yoga steps land-based yoga up a notch by moving it to a floating paddleboard. Paddleboard Fitness incorporates HIIT and plyometric into a full body workout. In February, the Club will be adding in a 3rd format, Family Paddleboard fitness. This class is much like the Paddleboard Fitness class, adapted for families of all ages (including children who are comfortable in deep water). Individuals at all fitness levels will be able to participate as boards are tethered to the side of the pool--you can keep the workout at a basic level or push yourself. Swimsuits are not required, quick dry yoga or gym attire is recommended. You may get wet. Classes are held daily downtown, see the fitness schedule on page 22 for details..
